NEW FINDS DAVID PASCOE Hayle based artist David Pascoe was born and raised in Cornwall, and as a glassmaker is largely self-taught, meaning his work exhibits the creative freedom of a maker who works by instinct and experimentation. His richly coloured, kiln fired works are sandblasted and then re-fired to give a lovely, tactile finish to their surface. They are inspired by the artist’s interest in Cubism and Abstract Expressionism, and the work of two of his two favourite artists - Picasso and Chuck Close.

ADRIAN MITCHELL Falmouth based woodturner Adrian Mitchell creates beautiful vessels using wood from the local landscape. Working intuitively with young, green wood, he chooses interesting material from the fork of a tree, or a junction between trunk and branch, and then dries each piece in controlled conditions, sometimes over several months, so that natural distortions take place. The result is uniquely beautiful work that tells the story of that one tree, revealing characteristics of its species, size, age, and the particular details of how and where it grew. www.adrianmitchell.org

YEW TREE GALLERY Facing the Atlantic on the coast road to St Ives, this is the finest location in the gallery’s 46-year life span! Exhibitions of contemporary fine and applied art are often themed around the tenor of the times. CONVIVIO! opens on14th April-28th May, expressing the warmth of interiors, camaraderie and joyfulness in contrast to our fragmented society. HUGO GRENVILLE imbues his oil paintings with the joy of life whilst ROSE HILTON’s subtle use of colour gives her canvases a more contemplative air. Indigenous people intrigue HR Bell through their culture and tradition and CHARLOTTE LYON bases her paintings on the conviviality of Italian café life. SUTTON TAYLOR’S magnificent lustrous ceramics
bring grace and beauty into any home, and NIGEL LAMBERT’s painterly earthenware dishes increase the pleasure of a meal. Also displayed are pots by ARWYN JONES & JULIET FITTON; stoneware sculpture by JOHN MALTBY, jewellery by DUIBHNE GOUGH, carved wood, glass and metalware. From 2nd June, Miranda Leonard curates ‘TURN UP THE HEAT!’ until 6th July. The dramatic use of colour is explored in the artists’ work & particularly in CARRY AKROYD’s serigraphs and oils of countryside subjects. RICHARD PHETHEAN and RAMP Ceramics use colourful slips to build up layers of decoration in their ceramic forms. Printmaker JESS DAVIES’s work evokes mood and space while KITTY
HILLIER carves into her painted hardboard abstract images. PENNY CARTER’s glass art is full of light and happiness, offset by sculptural black furniture by GORDON MONK. West Penwith
You’ll often hear many artists talk about the mystical lure of West Penwith. Atmospheric, moody, wild and dramatic, it is no wonder so many artists are inspired by this windswept landscape. You’ll often notice similar colour palettes and styles amongst those who capture West Penwith on canvas, but all in their own style and medium. From daring en plein air artists balanced on sea cliff edges to artists deep in the moorland capturing the lichen on the rocks, there are plenty of hidden gems and inspirational places to be discovered in this part of Cornwall.
Catherine Lucktaylor specialises in unique hand built Raku fired ceramics made in her large rural studio near St Buryan in west Cornwall. She uses ancient hand building techniques to create exquisitely crafted one of a kind pinched and coiled bowls and vessels which embody the wild beauty of the Cornish landscape. Lucktaylor Ceramics highly collectible collections are available from Beside the Wave Gallery, Falmouth, The Customs House Gallery, Porthleven and the Makers’ Emporium, St Just.

ressing a 3m x 2m window space is always going to be a challenge for a jewellery designer! My brain is wired to think very small and three dimensional, not positive/negative spacial awareness. However nearly five years on from opening my shop, Circa 21 in Penzance, I love creating my shop window. It’s my inspirational space. With a wooden floor, a beautiful
big window, it deserves all my creativity four times a year, to dress it. On my way to work I walked past a frothy forsythia bush and was inspired. Yellow is such a strong colour on a blue/teal background, so I needed to search for a suitable backdrop. Living by the sea, and watching nature unfold ultimately influences me. The window space has inspired a passion for ‘visual
merchandising’ to reflect this. Strong colours, bold shapes, and less is more, can captivate and inspire customers to visit the shop. This season’s display is especially strong, with garlands of silk forsythia hung in front of a textured teal back drop, highlighting blue accent colours with products from Cornish suppliers: Joe Mason, Cornish Pots and Julia Crimmen.

MAKER’S FOCUS LISA WISDOM Everything about Lisa Wisdom embodies a way of life few practice today. Her forge, hidden down a bumpy road in the thick countryside of Mabe, is over two hundred years old and it is here that Lisa creates artwork the likes of which has never been done before. “I made my first metal picture in 2011. The metal I use for my work is corrugated tin, the wrinkly tin you see everywhere on the roofs of buildings. Nearly all of my material comes from the ruins of old quarry buildings.” At her workshop in an old quarry, boulders of granite lie in neat piles along the cliff faces and rust ridden machinery is unearthed from the ground regularly like forgotten fossils, shrouded in wild flowers, hedgerows and apple trees. With her father running a pottery and her mother a weaver, a life in a community thriving with art and craft enabled Lisa to experiment with anything and everything. At 24, she followed her passion for metal working and trained to become a blacksmith, using her skills to travel around the world. She returned to Cornwall in 2008 as the only female blacksmith in the duchy and gained herself a prestigious portfolio of awards and commissions. Later, with a goal to find something niche in her skill set, Lisa began to shift her work from blacksmithing to art. Working with metal and corrugated tin, the tin is blushed with red and brown from rust and the copper speckled with blue from oxidisation, Lisa turns these forgotten materials into landscapes that embody her connection to this abandoned mercantile area. “All the colours are natural; the blue is copper from old boilers…I use charcoal to etch on the windows and detailing. I do a lot of drawing and sketching. “People are often drawn to my work because of the colours and then they can’t believe that it’s made from metal.” Lisa’s work is a harmony of her industrial skill and her love for a craft that resonate wonderfully with Cornwall’s past and present economy. As part of the Cornwall Crafts Association you can see Lisa’s work at both the Trelissick and Trelowarren galleries. www.lisawisdomartist.com www.cornwallcrafts.co.uk
