SUMMER ISSUE 16 2021
At a time when Cornwall is at its busiest, there’s something rather escapist about stepping away from the hustle and bustle into the tender tranquillity of a gallery. An unspoken air of hushed voices and quiet reflection offers a moment of respite from the sounds of summer outside, as well as the chance to see this beautiful part of the country through the eyes of its talented creatives. Be it through the medium of ceramics, painting, sculpture, textile or jewellery, each uniquely captures an essence of Cornwall. In this issue of Art, you’ll find a wide selection of this Cornish essence throughout the galleries, independent artists and makers showcasing their work, alongside a range of exhibitions from some of the county’s leading historic and public galleries. Plan art trails using our map and discover hidden gems in the farthest reaches of Cornwall, as well as the latest exhibitions and new releases arriving this season. Oll an Gwella, (All the best)

HISTORY THE ORIGIN OF CHARLESTOWN Over two hundred years ago if you were to head to the picturesque village of Charlestown, you’ll have instead found yourself in West Polmear, Charlestown’s former name. Then, instead of an impressive harbour, magnificent Tall Ships, idyllic galleries, and some fabulous places to eat, you’ll have instead discovered a small, harbour-less fishing village with a population of just nine residents.
THE OLD WORKSHOP The Old Workshop is a wonderful historic building situated next to the main car park at Charlestown near St Austell. Converted from an old gunpowder store, after extensive refurbishment, it houses three very interesting businesses. ‘The Craft Kiln’ is a showcase for Cornish crafts, where you can meet the makers and purchase a unique handmade gift. ‘Cscape Art’ is the gallery and studio of artist, Sarah Blakey, and her photographer husband, Mick. Here you can meet the artist and perhaps invest in an original
painting or photographic print. ‘Sail Loft Emporium’ houses a fine array of antiques, collectables, vintage and retro items. Around 50 cabinets and stalls all under one roof. Please see website for this year’s opening hours. However, with nearby St Austell currently in the midst of its booming China Clay industry, the need for a local port to trade on a global scale became evident. Local businessman Sir Charles Rashleigh saw an opportunity; to provide a port for West Polmear village that would offer protection and trade. With the help of renowned architect John Smeaton, responsible for the likes of St Ives’ iconic Smeaton’s Pier and Rame’s historic Eddystone Lighthouse, the two men designed a plan for a harbour, including a battery defence and a Huer Hut to support the village’s Pilchard fishermen. Such a success was the harbour, in 1799 the name of the village was changes to Charlestown to honour the port’s creator.

ART EXCLUSIVE FALMOUTH ART GALLERY’S ‘INGENIOUS’ UNTIL SEPTEMBER 11TH 127 years ago, the first Falmouth Art Gallery opened to the public. Originally a commercial gallery, the space was running under the directorship of prominent local artists Henry Scott Tuke and William Ayerst Ingram. Well-connected and well established, Tuke and Ingram had travelled globally to promote the work of Cornish artists and had become known for organising exhibitions that brought together national, international and local artists. Today, as Falmouth Art Gallery now stands as a public gallery of both historical and contemporary art, that ethos very much still stands. The gallery has been open in its present form since 1978, having experienced renovations in 1990 and 1996. Inside, a collection of over 3,000 artworks can be found, all of which belong to the town of Falmouth. An integral part of Falmouth’s creative and cultural community, the gallery plays an important role in celebrating and promoting Falmouth’s heritage and creativity, not to mention acting as a pillar for community well-being, offering activities and events for families and people of all ages. For its main summer exhibition, ‘Ingenious!’ is on display until the 11th September. Falmouth’s reputation as a hub for invention and innovation is no secret, and in ‘Ingenious!’ visitors will be able to witness an assortment of artworks, automata and objects that will delight and thrill the whole family, from the marvellous inventions of the Fox family to awe-inspiring moving artwork, alongside projects and inventions that are being developed in Falmouth in the present day. Combining contemporary works with historical pieces often feature in many of the gallery’s exhibitions and events, carrying through the prominence of Falmouth’s art scene from its earliest days through to now. Book your free ticket online for a one-hour slot via the Falmouth Art Gallery website. Last entry is at 3pm from Monday to Friday and 1pm on Saturday. Distinguished ceramicists Hugh West and Karen Carlyon will be featured in a month-long exhibition showcasing their works at Porthleven’s Customs House Gallery. Known for his distinctive, elegant forms, Hugh West is one of Cornwall’s most known and renowned ceramic artists. His beautiful, wheel thrown porcelain ceramics have been featured in exhibitions worldwide, and he exhibits a collection of frequently changing pieces at the Customs House Gallery. Karen Carlyon began working as Hugh West’s apprentice in 2017 and created her own studio. Before that, she spent several years with Paula Downing, hand building large sculptural pieces using various clay bodies. ARTIST PROFILE - JACK DAVIS The raw power of light, sea and sky play a strong focus in the work of contemporary seascape artist, Jack Davis. There’s a sense of wild emotion when studying a particularly atmospheric piece, when it is possible to even hear the sound of the tumultuous sky or the restless dark sea, juxtaposed by the faint glimmers of light trying to push through the richly coloured clouds. It’s a combination of commanding forces which has long intrigued Jack, “Even with the explanation of science, there is certainly a primal current that is tangible when I am out in the elements, recognising the titanic battles between sky and sea. I paint the light of the sun breaking through the darkness as a metaphor to my own personal struggles and continuous efforts to remain steadfast against the trials and tribulations of life.” Inspired by the works of J. M. Turner and Mark Rothko, there is an undeniable sense of feeling and elemental power that supersedes more figurative aspects in Jack’s work – a representation of his personal response to his subject matter. Jack’s latest works embody this spiritual ethos as he delves deeper into ambivalent concepts that not only enable viewers to discover their own sense of meaning and connection, but to also allow Jack to bring his most inner self into harmonious reckoning with the majesty of the elements. “I really enjoy the ambiguous quality of my most recent work, it enables the viewer to find their own interpretation and offers multiple perspectives. Like reading clouds in the sky, each person will see something different, and the fun is in putting the pieces of the puzzle together.” You can find the work of Jack Davis at select galleries across Cornwall, including Porthleven’s The Customs House Gallery, where he is a resident artist. A focus exhibition of Jack’s work will be held at the gallery from Saturday 4th to Monday 13th of September 2021. www.cornwall-art.co.uk Image: Regathering Strength - Jack Davis

ART EXCLUSIVE - MIRACLE THEATRE PRESENTS: STARCRAZY Let us set the scene of an idyllic summer’s eve in Cornwall. Under a dusky peach sky as the sun makes it slow descent, the gentle buzz of the crowd lingers. In the glorious golden hour, when very often both sky and sea seem eerily still, the stages of Cornwall’s outdoor theatre performances come alive. From legendary Cornish theatre group, Miracle Threate, comes their brand-new performance, Starcrazy, a cosmic comedy about obsession and the rekindling of love, hope and possibility. Set in October 1957, the world is living in fear of nuclear war and Russia has just launched Sputnik 1. Now, UFOs are turning up left, right and centre and MI5 is on high alert. Meanwhile, Stanley is building something in his garden shed. He may live in suburbia but, in his mind, Stanley is voyaging through outer space, eager to make contact with other life forms. His neighbour, Gwen, thinks he should be exploring the unknown much closer to home. Written and directed by Bill Scott, with original music by Tom Adams, this touring comedy performances stars Daniel Richards, Martin Hyder, Anna Munden and Risha Silvera. Touring across the South West until the 28th August, head to www.miracletheatre.co.uk to find out when Starcrazy is coming to a venue near you.

NEW FINDS WILL CALVER Since graduating with a BA Hons in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2019, still-life painter Will Calver’s work has become hot property, selling out at exhibitions within the first few hours. His beautiful works are painted from direct observation and express the intimacy and quietude that develop during time spent in the presence of his subjects. Classical figuration, spacious compositions and an extraordinary skill for interpreting tone and form give his paintings of quince, lemons, peaches, pebbles, bottles and ceramic objects a power rarely seen in the contemporary art today. See his newest collection this August at New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives. www.newcraftsmanstives.com
MARTHA HOLMES Rising young painter Martha Holmes captures the essence of the Cornish landscape through expressive brushwork and the pure abstraction of colour and light. Exploring the relationship between land and sea at the point where Cornwall’s rural landmass meets the rolling Atlantic Ocean, she is inspired by the shifting identity of both the north and south coastlines, and her own emotive connection to the sea and the landscape she loves to paint. Cornish masters such as Patrick Heron, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, and 21st century St Ives pleinair painter Lucy Bray, have all been significant influences on the development of her work. www.marthaholmes.com By Mercedes Smith Fine Art Communications www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

THE LANE GALLERY UPSTAIRS TRUDIE MOORE Trudie Moore’s contemporary abstract paintings explore the tension created by control and restraint and contrast that with freedom in the painting process. Her current paintings have luminous fields of colour, transparencies and opacities that act as both a visual and an actual layer over one another, and which are layers upon the surface layer of the canvas. She works in clean, bright colours and fluorescents which allow her to achieve a fresh and pure lightness which lifts the viewer. She has fine art paintings and prints for sale, offers

MARTIN JOHN FOWLER ART An artist travelling and capturing Cornwall’s wild and bustling coastal areas, Martin John Fowler can typically be found immersing himself in the elements to capture his works. Born and brought up in the mining towns of South Yorkshire, Martin has spent much of his time in Cornwall whenever possible over the past twenty years and as a result, his rich and vivid pieces have seen him gain significant recognition amongst Cornwall’s artistic communities. Having studied Painting and Printmaking at Sheffield College as well as completing a BA(Hons) in Fine Art, Martin has exhibited works nationally and internationally in solo and mixed exhibitions. His bold colour palette and fluid style of painting depict a strong sense of movement and liveliness in his subjects, from windy rugged landscapes
to busy harbours docked with fishing vessels. His collection, The Prevailing Sense of Change, is an ongoing project to capture the change in working ports from personal childhood memories to present day scenes. You can find Martin John Fowler’s work in the following Cornish galleries: Artworld, Falmouth; Bluebramble Gallery St Ives; Tyler gallery Mousehole and Custom House Gallery. ENCOUNTERING THE CORNISH LANDSCAPE There is a poetic quality to the way Mankin absorbs the Cornish landscape. He seeks out visual encounters to describe the experience of a time and a place. The flux and pulse of the landscape generates small chance occurrences: the sweet smell of yellow gorse, the flight of a gull on a summer’s day, the darkness of a winter storm, the muted jades of autumn sea. The artist uses photography and sketching to record his encounters before carrying them back to his studio, both physically and psychologically, where he unleashes them onto his canvases like a poet stringing together metaphors. ‘As a painter every day is an encounter, not only with the canvas you’re working on, but with the materials, the choice of colour, the paint application, and the tools.’ Mankin is continually searching for an equilibrium between the formal qualities of the painting and the experience he is transcribing. The initial explosion of mark making, free association, and gestural paintwork is Mankin’s response to the emotional pull of the Cornish landscape. This energy is then tempered through continuous refinement and analytical thinking, using each new encounter with the painting to balance colour, texture, and composition. His paintings transport the viewer into the fray of his dynamic Cornish landscapes, whilst involving them with a thoughtful and roving surface. We can see where Mankin has built up, scratched back, changed direction, moved forward, pulled away. One unearthed mark, one part-hidden hue will generate a memory, a feeling, a sense of something mistily remembered. We do not only feel the sea spray on our faces, the warmth of the sun, the drama of high winds, we feel the painting speaks to us directly, excavating our own weathered, private, devotion to land and sea. David Mankin’s solo exhibition at Cornwall Contemporary in Penzance, ‘Encounters’, runs from the 28th August – 25th September. A new book about Mankin’s process and paintings, ‘David Mankin – Remembering in Paint,’ written by Kate Reeve-Edwards, is being published in late August to coincide with the exhibition. A GLIMPSE AT...
BUDE One of Bude’s most famous attributes, the Bude Canal, opened in 1826 and extended thirty miles along the countryside to Launceston. Originally the canal was for trading raw materials; the sand on Bude’s geologically unique coastline is high in lime and at the time was a highly valued fertiliser for farms in Cornwall and Devon. Bude even held an imperative role in the establishment of Surf Lifesaving in Britain, with the founding father of the country’s surf lifesaving movement, Australian Allan Kennedy, establishing a base in Cornwall in 1952. Kennedy had spent his life associated with surf lifesaving in Australia for decades and when his work brought him to England, Cornwall’s Bude was first point of call. Noticing the lack of beach safety in Bude, Kennedy campaigned for equipment so that he could start training volunteers and succeeded in instructing twenty-two helpers on surf lifesaving. Bude’s main beach, Summerleaze, is just a five-minute walk from the town centre and is popular with surfers and families alike. The later years of Queen Victoria’s reign saw Bude’s reputation grow as a hotspot for sea bathing, wild scenery, and Arthurian legends. With the extension of the railway line to the town in 1898, the holiday trade flooded in. Despite the line closing in 1966, Bude’s reputation as a national favourite for seaside vacations wasn’t going anywhere. Today, visitors to the historic town can sample many of its famous delights, from an honest ale at Bude’s micropub, The Barrel, or a delicious seasonal lunch at the stylish Temple restaurant, to an afternoon exploring the galleries of the historic Castle Bude, this North Cornish town has a bit of everything.

DISCOVER CHARLES CAUSLEY AT LAUNCESTON Perhaps one of the most notable attributes to Launceston is its role as the birthplace of celebrated poet Charles Causley. Born in 1917 in the wake of World War One, Causley was born into a life of poverty and grief. He recalled seeing shell-shocked veterans wandering about the small town and his own father had been a casualty of the war. However, through that, Causley had one of his earliest discoveries for his love of literature as he often read aloud to his father whilst he was unwell. An avid reader and solitary child, Causley was quickly enamoured by the discoveries and adventures to be had through writing and reading. He saw books as an escape from the trials of everyday life and the opportunity to spread joy and magic through stories. It became a quest of his to learn how to write well and to explore the many practices of writing, from novels and screenplays to short stories and poetry. However, it wasn’t until after Causley had fought in his own war in the navy, during WW2, that he began to take writing more seriously, supposedly making a promise to himself that if he survived the war he would pursue that which was truly passionate to him. Upon his discharge from service, Causley returned to Launceston and became a teacher until retirement age, whereafter he finally began to explore his love of poetry. Now, with a lifetime of experiences behind him, he had finally found that magic he had been looking for as he wrote about his life in Cornwall, and the struggles and beauty that came with it. Since his death in 2003, Causley’s reputation as a writer has continued to create a lasting legacy and as such the Causley Trust was founded shortly after by both friends and supporters keen to protect and preserve his work. In 2007, the Trust acquired Cyprus Well, Causley’s former Launceston home and now a centre from promoting emerging literature and art activity, especially amongst the community and region he called home.
