Dog friendly beaches Since 2020, most beaches in Cornwall allow dogs all year, except for the ones with dog bans from 10am to 6pm in July and August. The good news is that there are some truly beautiful beaches which allow dogs all year. Here is our pick of 5 of the best Watergate Bay, Newquay This huge, soft and sandy beach is our pick for a few reasons. The surf is wonderful here and you can enjoy surfing lessons or other water sports while your dog also roams free in what is a vast expanse of sandy freedom. There are also lovely dog friendly restaurants such as Wax and The Beach Hut and coffee and snack vans, as well as magnificent coastal walks. Holywell Bay Holywell Bay is distinctive for the twin peaks of Gull Rock just offshore and it will be familiar with Poldark fans as a key location for filming in the BBC TV series. It is backed by beautiful, soft, sandy dunes and can be accessed from a car park right by the beach. Perranporth Perranporth is in many ways a dog friendly haven. The popular, wide sandy beach on the north allows dogs on leads all year and they can run free off lead on Perran Sands to the north. The car parks are close to the beach (although busy in summer) and there is even a doggy shower available as well as an ice cream parlour which pioneered dog friendly ice creams. Porthkidney beach near St Ives Porthkidney beach is a little trickier to get to than some of the other beaches we have mentioned but in this part of West Cornwall, there are fewer to choose from and Porthkidney is particularly beautiful. You can walk down to this beach from the coast path near to Carbis Bay and Lelant stations, which you can access by train. Alternatively, park near St Uny Church in Lelant or at the station in Lelant and follow the footpath down to the beach to gain access Carne beach, Roseland Peninsula Carne Beach on the southern shores of the beautiful Roseland Peninsula is sheltered by Nare Head. The beach itself is sandy and popular with families. The very dog friendly and highly recommended, Nare Head Hotel is just above it for cream teas or snacks and there is parking and easy access to the beach. For more dog friendly beaches and a list of beaches which do have dog bans visit www. dogfriendlycornwall.co.uk where you can find information online or order a printed guide with maps in the online shop.

Uncover Layers of Cornwall at the St Just Ordinalia From September 4th - 18th 2021, a small team of community-spirited individuals in the rugged west of Cornwall, are converging creatively to put on a full scale (within the government’s Covid-19 restrictions) two-week long Festival of Cornish Culture. The focal point of the festival is the immersive performances of the powerful, biblical trilogy of medieval mystery plays, The Ordinalia, in the town’s historic Plen an Gwari, arguably the oldest working outdoor theatre space in the country. Although anyone can purchase tickets to each of the individual three plays; Origo Mundi, The Passion and The Resurrection, with a festival ticket, festivalgoers can watch all three plays in the famous trilogy and partake in a variety of uniquely Cornish events and workshops. Perhaps the quirkiest of the sessions is Cornish wrestling (Omdowl y’gan taves). Wrestling is one of Cornwall’s national sports and was an intrinsic part of the festivals where miracle plays were performed back in the 14th century. At the 2021 St Just Festival of Cornish Culture, members of the Cornish Wrestling Association (founded in 1938) will be demonstrating some of the techniques involved in this ancient and very Cornish martial art and will talk through its intriguing history.  St Just’s Miner’s Chapel, in the heart of this historical mining community will play host to ‘A very Cornish Concert’ on Monday 6th and Sunday 12th September, with an evening of Cornish music, stories and culture. Festival tickets cost £90 and include access to all three plays, a curated evening concert of Cornish culture, and three cultural activities of choice. Festival ticket holders will also leave with a curated souvenir programme and a goody bag. For more information, visit the St Just Ordinalia website at  www.stjustordinalia.com/ St Just Ordinalia Facebook, Instagram & Twitter @StJustOrdinalia

St Ives School of Painting The St Ives School of Painting, a historic painting School and a registered charity, has extended its provision for young people with an ambitious online youth programme. Led by Youth Arts Manager, Cat Lee, the School offers three different projects for young people: a Kids Sunday Art Club, an Art Collective for teenagers, and a Culture Camp for young people at risk. Much of the provision is free for young people to access, thanks to support from various funders including The Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, St Ives Rotary Club, The Roy Ray Legacy Fund, Little Parc Owles Trust, and the UK government’s Kickstarter Programme. Cat Lee explained: “Our Art Collective and Culture Camp are projects specifically aimed at those from low-income households. We are targeting a big section of the next generation of adults who feel excluded from cultural experiences. Covid has intensified educational inequalities and left this group even more alienated.” The pinnacle of the youth programme is Culture Camp, which began in 2017 but has pivoted online in order to continue.  Meanwhile, The Porthmeor Art Collective is a new online project which focuses on contemporary art practices and ideas, led and taught by 18–25-year-old emerging artists. Currently spearheaded by emerging young artist Caleb Richards, who’s role is part-funded by the Kickstarter Scheme, this project is thought to be the only peer to peer initiative of its type in the UK. The hour-long sessions are free and the syllabus, designed by Caleb, covers topics including the roots and techniques of Manga, iconic album covers of the past decade, and New York graffiti in the 1980s. Finally, in October the School will recommence its online Sunday Kids Art Club, with hour-long sessions suitable for whole families but specifically aimed at children between 7-12. The £10 charge for these sessions helps support the other youth work of the charity, enabling it to provide free arts education to those less able to pay. A Day a As the popularity of staycations soar, competition to find a slice of escapism has become tough, and this is no exception for the Isles of Scilly. However, in just a day, there’s still plenty you can do to get the most of this sub-tropical archipelago that has beguiled adventurers for decades. At 9.30am, the Scillonian III departs from Penzance harbour. From there, it’s a 2 hour and 45-minute journey across 28 miles of wild Cornish Sea to the harbour of St Mary’s. It’s a crossing unlike any other, offering stunning scenes of both Cornish coastline and open sea. As noon approaches, the bright aquamarine waters of Scilly approach… St Mary’s As the largest island on Scilly, St Mary’s has plenty of hustle and bustle to keep you entertained for the four hours of Scilly fun you can have before you’re needed back at the harbour to board the Scillonian home at 4pm. The island is extremely cycle-friendly; by bike, you can explore the island’s gorgeous beaches, from Hugh Town’s south facing Porthcressa to the north facing Town Beach and Porthmellon, as well as much more be it eateries, galleries or historical sites. Island Hop Travel by boat is common practice amongst the Scilly Isles. Depending on the tides and wind, travel to Tresco from St Mary’s can take as little as 20 minutes, however the jet powered boats can do it in under 10 minutes. For St Martin’s, it’s a little longer at around 25 minutes and for St Agnes, roughly 15 minutes. It’s always good to check close to the time of your day trip for accurate timetables and weather conditions. St Agnes Unspoilt and unequivocally tranquil, St. Agnes is barely a mile long. At low tide, it’s joined by its island neighbour Gugh via a sand bar. The island is home to 82 people, with working farms, and a very picturesque lighthouse. While away an hour or two exploring the coastline before rewarding yourself with a pint at the island’s pub, The Turk’s Head, or a delicious cream tea at Coastguards Cafe. There’s also Westward Farm, where you’ll find the Isle of Scilly’s only licensed distillery producing premium gin, cyder and apple juice as well as their shop ’28 Miles’ which stocks a selection of essential oils, soaps and toiletries made from plants grown and used on the island itself. Tresco One of Scillies greater-known features is the island of Tresco, a small sanctuary of sub-tropical luxury. The island was purchased by wealthy merchant banker Augustus Smith during the 1830s from the Duchy of Cornwall and has been in the family ever since, currently owned by the DorrienSmiths, but what it is most notably renowned for is its extensive gardens. Spanning across the ruins of a medieval monastery, Tresco Abbey Gardens offer 17 acres of plants, trees, and flowers from all

at Scilly over the world that thrive in Tresco’s mild climate. Accompanying the gardens is the Isles of Scilly homage to its 900 plus shipwrecks at Valhalla Museum, located within the gardens. Bryher Inspiration for the Michael Morpurgo novel ‘Why the Whales Came’, it’s easy to see why Bryher draws in artists and authors, with its rocky coves and small granite hills. For a traditional pub lunch, Fraggle Rock Bar is on hand, whilst Vine Café offers an atmospheric step back in time with homemade food in a cosy setting. Those looking for a luxurious experience can head over to award-winning hotel Hell Bay, and if you’re still keen for some water action, there are also kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding opportunities. St Martin’s It’s easy to spot this island, thanks to its brightly coloured red and white striped daymark, erected in 1683 by Thomas Ekins on the highest point of the island. As the northernmost island with a population of roughly 120 people, St Martin’s has a diverse and creative community. Visit St Martin’s Vineyard and Winery for a taste of one of the smallest and most southerly vineyards in the UK, or head to the St Martin’s Observatory for some deep sky viewing. The island is also home to renowned jeweller Fay Page, whose open studio is a treasure trove of stunning jewellery and beach comb finds, where you can find your own special piece of Scilly to take home with you. From just £30 per person, plan your day trip via the Scillonian Ferry and chosen adventures at www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk

Gyllyngdune Gardens are holding free art workshops three days a week throughout the summer break that take inspiration from the creativity taking place at Falmouth’s best-known hubs, such as Falmouth Art Gallery’s ‘Ingenious’ exhibition and Falmouth Library’s Summer Reading Challenge. Influenced by Falmouth’s historic Fox family legacy, whose interests in the arts, sciences and engineering led to many pioneering inventions, these fun workshops will be combining these elements and offering something for everyone. There’s also a ‘Foxtrot’ map in which families can take a walk around town to discover key sites of the Fox legacy and walk in their footsteps to discover more free workshops and events. As a drop-in event, numbers are limited, so be sure to check the dates in the summer activity guide available online via www. open.falculture.org
