Your guide to a
Cornish Christmas
Could there be anywhere better to celebrate Christmas than Cornwall? The food, the fairs, the lights, the heritage... This 2021 Christmas guide from the myCornwall team is an attempt to encapsulate all of Cornwall’s festive fabulousness, from Bude to Penzance, into 44 pages. It’s tight, but we’re up to the challenge, and you might see tinsel and sparkles bursting out at the seams. Here you’ll find a plethora of fairs and markets, stuffed to bursting with home-grown gifts perfect for loved ones of all ages; and special events from carol concerts to illuminated garden trails to kick-start your Christmas countdown. You can’t fail to find inspiration here – and you’ll have the added satisfaction of knowing you’re supporting a local business to boot, a gesture much needed and appreciated in these testing times. On a personal note, I love Christmas this side of the Tamar, and can’t wait to revisit old traditions, such as the pantomime at the newly reopened Hall For Cornwall, while making new memories - The Alverton’s festive afternoon tea being top of my list. Here I am pictured with my daughter a few years ago – a much-loved shot by Exposure Photo Agency, whose family shoots prove that the best Christmas presents don’t have to come gift-wrapped. However you choose to celebrate, we all wish you Nadelik Lowen (Merry Christmas) and Bledhen nowydh da (Happy New Year)!

12 Days of Christmas A dozen events to make your festive season merry and bright, from carol concerts and ice skating, steam trains and lantern trails to gift fairs and pantomimes
TAKE IN A FESTIVE SHOW
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a panto. Truro’s Hall For Cornwall presents Cinderella, in which angel-voiced Ashley is swept up as a masked contestant in the local Rock & Rhythm Championships, sharing centre stage with a charming prince. Will her true identity be unmasked? Will she swap rags for riches? December 1 to January 2. www.hallforcornwall.co.uk Also: A Christmas Carol - the Dickensian classic visits Praa Sands (December 4) and Callington on December 5 (both www.carntocove.co.uk), the Minack Theatre from December 20 to 22, and the Acorn Penzance on December 23. Twisted Christmas by ‘Owdyado Theatre, a deliciously anarchic collection of mini-plays with a festive flavour (14+), at Carleen Village Hall on December 4; Hall for Gwinear on December 11 (www.carntocove.co.uk) Dick Whittington performed by Redruth am-drammers RAMPS at the Regal Theatre, Redruth from January 12 to 16. redruth.merlincinemas.co.uk/regal-theatre
DISCOVER THE ARCTIC AT KERNOW
The tunnels beneath Charlestown’s Shipwreck Treasure Museum were once used to transport clay to awaiting ships in the village’s harbour. These have been transformed into a polar-themed wonderland by a group of creative artists and a leading snow and ice special effects company. Explore a world of ice, encountering shipwrecks frozen in time, frozen waterfalls, giant icebergs and caves, all illuminated with thousands of lights and filled with an arctic soundscape. There will even be “real snow”! Admission includes museum access. Advance booking. Until Sunday, January 9. www.shipwreckcharlestown.co.uk
BE INSPIRED BY THE TUDORS
Cotehele’s garland has been a Christmas tradition since the Great Hall was first decorated for a staff Christmas celebration during the 1950s. That garland was simple yet beautiful, made from the bushy evergreen shrub pittosporum; the garden team has since embellished it with increasingly stunning displays of dried flowers, all sown, grown, cut and dried on site. The pandemic has seen efforts focused on re-opening the gardens, so this year’s garland will revert to a more modest design reflecting the kissing boughs Tudors brought into their homes in the winter. National Trust entry fee applies. November 20 to January 2 (closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
MEET SANTA BY STEAM
Bodmin & Wenford Railway’s popular Christmas trains return after a year off. Be greeted by Santa’s elves at Bodmin General before boarding the steam train to Bodmin Parkway. Children will be invited to write their list to Santa before returning to Bodmin General for Christmas-themed activities and the opportunity to meet Santa in his Victorian coach. Each child will receive an age-appropriate gift. Weekends December 4/5 and 11/12, then daily between December 17 and 24. www.bodminrailway.co.uk
CELEBRATE IN STYLE
The Alverton in Truro is pulling out all the stops for the festive period, starting with the Great Christmas Market on December 5. From 10am to 8pm, you can buy from Cornwall’s top creatives and makers, and join a festive masterclass or workshop such as wreath-making and Christmas cocktail shaking. Indulge in a decadent food and drink offering in the restaurant, and don’t miss merry tunes from carol singers and cheery classics from Ashley Harding. With festive lunches and afternoon teas served throughout December, special Christmas break offers including Christmas and Boxing Day, a performance by Near-Ta Theatre on December 27 and a New Year’s Eve Ball in the Great Hall, the Alverton has got Christmas covered. www.thealverton.co.uk

Discover installations created by local artists and schools, and design and build your own lantern. This is a pilot event for a regular winter festival of light from Scilly to the Tamar Valley. £8.50 adults, £6.50 children, £4 lantern making. www.trebahgarden.co.uk
GO ON THE RUN WITH SANTA Sleigh it like Santa, rock it like Rudolph, sock it like a snowman or twinkle like a Christmas tree at the Santas On The Run fundraising event at the Eden Project on Sunday, December 5. In 2019, more than 650 people jogged a 2k route around the biomes in festive gear, raising nearly £26,000 in support of Children’s Hospice South West. To enable social distancing, there will be three start times: 10.30am, 1pm and 3.30pm. Please supply your own outfit. Registration: £10 adult, £5 child (under twos free). www.chsw.org.uk/santas
MARVEL AT MOUSEHOLE HARBOUR LIGHTS Mousehole Harbour Lights will be illuminated this year, but organisers are keen to avoid large crowds due to continuing Covid-19 concerns, so the traditional switchon ceremony and Carolaire will be replaced by a “soft switch-on”. Displays in and around the village lit as and when they are ready, in the hope that all will be lit by mid-December. Fundraising was unable to take place in 2020, so please dig deep and donate online at www.mouseholelights.org.uk

All materials, tuition from the respective experts, and a glass of Christmas cheer. £45. Saturday, December 4, morning and afternoon sessions available. Book online at www.trevince.co.uk
FOLLOW THE STARS
At the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, look out for Magical Take & Make craft activities, a Star Trail and the Lanterns and Lights exhibition: displays of real and rare nautical lamps and navigation aids where sailors used the stars to guide them home. December 18 to January 2. www.nmmc.co.uk
CAROL CONCERTS Join the Sterts Singers for an hour of festive music and carols to put you in the yuletide mood. December 22, 7pm. www.sterts.co.uk Or head to Truro Cathedral for a carol service; there are many on offer throughout December, but hearing the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols service in the venue where it began is very special indeed – from 7pm on December 23 and 24.

CORNISH FOOD BOX Cornwall is famed for its fresh, delicious food. Surrounded by crystal clear waters and fertile farm land the county is home to some of the UK’s leading farmers, fishermen, bakers and artisan food producers. The Cornish Food Box Company was started in 2010 by two sisters, Tor and Lucy, who grew up on their family dairy farm near Porthleven. The aim was simple – to make it really easy for people to buy Cornish food and drink from small independent producers online and have it delivered to their door. The sad truth though is that hundreds of local families struggle to put food on their table. Local food banks are inundated with people needing help as Cornwall struggles with poor housing stock and a low wage, seasonal economy. In 2020 the Cornish Food Box, in partnership with CPR Transform Food Bank, committed to delivering fresh fruit and vegetable boxes to local
families. Since then almost 3000 boxes have been delivered and provided a safety net to those most in need. Tor Amran, Managing Director of Cornish Food Box said: “Food Boxes for the Food Bank is something we are incredibly proud of. We want to make sure this scheme continues and more local families can benefit from eating fresh, seasonal local produce.” CPR Foodbank supports people in Camborne, Pool and Redruth who are struggling to make ends meet. The charity provides food boxes to households which have been referred to them by professionals including GPs, health visitors, schools and support workers. CPR Foodbank chief executive, Joyce Duffin, said: “Our food boxes tend to contain items that have a long shelf life – food that will sustain a household in a time of need. Thanks to the support and our partnership with Cornish Food Box, we can now support families and
make sure children in particular have access to fresh fruit and vegetables.” If you would like to support the CPR Foodbank and The Cornish Food Box Company partnership please search DONATION on www.thecornishfoodboxcompany.co.uk or call the team on 01872 211533.
