This time of year is always special. To quote the famous Dr. Seuss, "You're off to great places. Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so... get on your way!" It's an exciting time in the lives of the seniors who have been working hard to graduate and have finally reached their goal. We wanted to take this issue of We Are Sand Springs to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2017! Families, you can find pictures of seniors on the following pages: front cover, 4, 16, & 17. Can you find your senior? Lastly I'll finish with another quote, "You have brains in your head. you have feet in your shoes. you can steer yourself in any direction you choose." Go and change the world Class of 2017!
Danielle Myers p.s. - We apologize if there are any pictures missing. We did our best to get all senior pictures from the yearbook.
Special shout out to our awesome senior! Our nephew Cody Gurley!

MOM
Mother's Day Checklist Moms are the best. As children, they feed and clothe us, kiss our booboos, and make sure we have everything we need. As adults, they teach us all we need to know about living on our own in the real world, all the while being there for us no matter what. This Mother’s Day, show your mom just how special she is and what she means to you. Cook and serve her breakfast in bed Fix your mom a delicious meal of her favorite breakfast foods, and serve it to her when she wakes up. She’s cooked for you for years, and now you can return the favor! Take over the housework Moms spend so much of their lives cleaning up after us. Take charge of some the chores and housework for a day, such as doing the dishes or washing and folding the laundry. Give her a day of relaxation, without the kids Husbands, for Mother’s Day this year, one of the best presents you can give your wife is some time to herself. Take care of the kids for the day while she enjoys a day of relaxing. Create a homemade gift As a child, we’ve all created homemade “Happy Mother’s Day” cards for our moms. As an adult child, you can get more creative with homemade gifts, such as homemade coupon books, sugar scrubs, and more. Your mom will love that you took the time to create something just for her. Take her out to dinner Food is a great way to show your thanks for all the hard work your mom does on a daily basis. Treat her to lunch or dinner at her favorite restaurant. Show your appreciation with flowers Flowers are a traditionally elegant way to show mom your love. Let Coble’s Flowers, located at 422 B Plaza Court in Sand Springs, help you design the perfect floral arrangement for your mom this Mother’s Day.

Summer Road Trip Checklist Set a loose itenerary - Setting a tight itenerary raises tension on your road trip and stress levels can get maxed out. Leave some breathing room so you can catch your breath and enjoy the view. Be sure to pack extra chargers and a map - Technology doesn't always like to play along, especially on road trips. Packing an extra car charger and a map can help prevent the "uh oh" moment of your phone dying in the middle of nowhere. Know how to check basic car features - Are all of the lights working? How about your wipers and fluids? These and a few other basic features you can easily check at every gas station. They also prevent a good drive from turning into a nightmare scenario. Make sure your tires are in good shape - Your tires are one (well... actually four.) of the most important parts of your car. Be sure they are clear of all debris, have good pressure, and even tread.

Senior in the Spotlight highlights a handful of amazing Sandite Seniors that have truly made a point to get the most out of their High School education and experiences. We are proud to feature these amazing students!

SPOTLIGHT For most high school students, television is a way to relax after a long day. For Charles Page High School senior Spencer Wright, however, the thought of creating television is much more exciting. Wright, who has lived in Sand Springs his entire life, became interested in film through the school’s broadcasting class, Sandites TV. “In my sophomore year, I joined Sandites TV, which was then only the class’ second year,” Wright says. “It was created to broadcast the school’s sports games, but I joined because I wanted to make videos for the school. Sandites TV is the best class at Charles Page, and I’m so thankful to have been a
part of it.”
Sandites TV has equipped Wright with the knowledge he

to college with hopes of being a film director, which is definitely not the safest field to go into. I don’t have a fallback plan, so things might go very badly for me in the future, but there’s nothing else I want to do. In Sandites TV, I’ve been able to make dozens of videos, and I have even been able to use the school’s video equipment to make my own scripted videos.” Wright says he is “forever grateful” for the education he received in teacher Janet Thompson’s class. “I’ll be forever grateful for Mrs. Thompson’s support throughout my three years in the class,” says Wright. “I’ve had some pretty strange ideas and have recorded

The things I’ve learned in Sandites TV are invaluable, and I truly believe that all the videos I’ve made and everything I’ve learned from them will help me immensely in the future.” In addition to Sandites TV, Wright is involved in the CPHS band and jazz band. He has been involved in band since sixth grade and jazz band since seventh grade, playing tenor saxophone in both. The 4.3 grade point average student is also being honored as a Top 5 candidate for Sandite King, the highest honor a Charles Page High School student can receive.
and music are on the forefront of Wright’s mind. “When I’m not at school, I’m usually feeding my perfectly normal and healthy obsession with movies, or fueling my other perfectly normal and healthy obsession with The Beatles,” Wright says. “Whenever I’m not doing that, I’m usually writing (video) scripts, or I’m busy being the worst guitar player I’ve ever heard. That is, compared to George Harrison, I’m the worst guitar player I’ve ever heard.” Wright plans to attend the University of Oklahoma this fall, where he will study film.
“I was surprise to make it into the Top 10 for Sandite King, so needless to say, I was even more surprised to find myself in the Top 5,” he says. “I can’t help but find it strange seeing myself on the ballot with the other four nominees, as they’re all quite popular athletes and I’m the jazz band and Sandites TV guy who stood on stage in silence for three and a half minutes as his act during the talent show one year. It really is an honor to be nominated alongside the others, because all of them would make fine Sandite Kings.” Outside of school, film, movies

nown as the “father of Sand Springs,” Charles E. Page created a city rich in industry, charity and community. But how did he get here? Page was a jack-of-all-trades, working as a policeman, telegraph messenger, logger, miner, and oilman in the north. He came to Indian Territory from Michigan, looking to further his career in the oil drilling industry. He drilled the districts of Glenpool, Tahena and Red Fork during the early 1900s, acquiring a wealth from oil properties in Tulsa, Creek and Osage counties. With his wealth, Page made it a point to benefit those in need. His philanthropy was evident through his support of various charitable organizations, including the local Salvation Army, the Tulsa County Humane Society and the American Red Cross Association, among others. One of his most important accomplishments was the establishment of the Sand Springs Orphan Children’s Home and Widow Colony, better known today as the Sand Springs Home. In 1907, while living in Tulsa, Page met a Salvation Army captain by the name of Brinton F. Breeding. Upon this meeting, he expressed to Breeding his desire to
Page's
help those less fortunate. “I have a friend down on First Street who runs a rooming house for men. It has thirty beds,” Page told Breeding. “Go to him and engage all beds for transient men who are broke, and arrange with the restaurant next door for supper and breakfast. With two meals and a night's lodging, send them on their way. If you find a needy family on account of sickness or unemployment, purchase groceries. Come to me each day for a check to pay the bills. For the weekend, come on Monday. If it is ten dollars or a hundred, pay it every day.” In 1908, Page purchased farmland west of Tulsa, in what is now Sand Springs, to be used for the benefit of those in need. This land would be cultivated and transformed into shelter for the orphaned and widowed. The home, which originally consisted of one widow and her children living in a tent on the land, grew and expanded rapidly over the years as the number of those seeking shelter increased. Page was committed to providing the feeling of home to every child and widow that entered it and believed that every child deserved the same opportunities, education and feeling of being loved. Page was instrumental in the

growth of Sand Springs through a number of avenues. In addition to city promotion and encouraging friends and family to build homes in the city, Page established the Sand Springs Power, Water, and Light Company. This influenced many businesses, including manufacturers and refineries, to set up shop in the city. He is also known for founding an interurban railroad connecting Sand Springs and Tulsa, a cotton mill, a bank and a hospital. Page was also a man of great faith. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, he gave generously to the church and its causes. A fellow church member and friend of Page, Judge Paul Pinkerton, once recalled how Page lived out this faith in his everyday life. “One day he was riding with me in a car returning from Tulsa, where we had been together on some business,” Pinkerton said. “As we were passing the Indian Springs near the greenhouse, I remarked to Mr. Page that he had used great judgment in establishing Sand Springs on its present wooded location among the small hills rather than the low land south of the Katy Tracks and west of Lake Station which overflowed at times. Mr. Page at once explained: ‘I did not do it. Sand Springs is God's Town.’” May 2017 | WeAreSandSprings.com 19

Where are they now? T
As the school year is ending for Sand Springs students, and seniors are eagerly anticipating college life in the fall, one former Sandite and 1988 graduate of Charles Page High School is proving that it’s possible to go from starving college student to project manager for the most recognizable aerospace company in the world. Timothy Wright is a project manager for Spacecraft Thermal Protection Systems with Jacobs Technology,
with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Wright explains that his decision to work for NASA was originally due to the close proximity to his school. “(The Kennedy Space Center) was in close proximity to my college, Florida Institute of Technology,” he says. “I was a starving college student, and I got a job as an engineering intern my senior year of college. Once I witnessed a shuttle launch at (Cape Canaveral), I knew I wanted to be part of the program.”
"The best part of my recent visit to Sand Springs was sharing my experience with nearly 2,000 students in Sand Springs schools." the largest NASA contractor at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. But before he made it to NASA, he was a resident of Applegate Estates, located off of State Highway 97 between Sapulpa and Sand Springs. He lived in the area from 1980 to 1988, attending Allen Bowden Elementary School, Clyde Boyd Junior High School and Charles Page High School. After graduating from high school in 1988, he set off for college at Florida’s Institute of Technology, graduating in 1992
From then on, Wright held numerous positions at the Kennedy Space Center, both as an engineer and as a manger. He worked for Rockwell International as a space shuttle payload integration engineer, responsible for the electrical and mechanical interfaces between the space shuttle and its various payloads. He held the position of lead payload integration engineer for STS-30, STS-67 and STS-75, and was recognized by astronaut crews for his significant contributions that resulted in the success of these missions.

Timothy Wright - Project Manager Wright was recently back in Sand Springs, where he was honored by the Sand Springs Education Foundation and inducted into the Sandite Hall of Fame. While he visited his former home, Wright met with students throughout the Sand Springs Public School District. “The best part of my recent visit to Sand Springs was sharing my experience with nearly 2,000 students in Sand Springs schools,” he says. “I hope one of them will follow in my footsteps to help put Americans on Mars.” During his Hall of Fame acceptance speech, Wright recalled his visit with the students and teachers. “It was … fun for me to be able to talk to several Sand Springs students at their schools this week about my experience,” he said in his speech. “They are bright kids, and asked some tough questions. I was (also) impressed with the administrators and teachers I met this week. Even when the final bell rang, many were still at the school working with the students on special projects. This type of dedication will make this community even stronger in the future.” Wright thanked one teacher in particular he had in high school, leaving a lasting impact on his life. “One particular teach that had a tremendous influence on my life was Mr. Moguin. I really wanted to be in his high school physics class, mainly because they won the Spring Fling every year, and I wanted to know the secret
of running up a greased ramp with an egg in your hand. He did a great job of making learning fun and interesting, and his class gave me the confidence that I could succeed as an engineer,” he said. Aside from work, Wright is an avid surfer. He lives in Satellite Beach, Fla., within walking distance from the beach, allowing him to surf frequently when the waves are good. He has also traveled to California, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama in search of the perfect wave. He is also an ice hockey player and has played in the Spacecoast Hockey League for 20 years, where he has been awarded for his sportsmanship and high standard of playing ability. He has been a part of multiple championship teams with the league. Wright’s other hobbies include snowboarding, wakeboarding, jet skiing, skateboarding, snorkeling and riding rollercoasters. He also enjoys volunteering, and has volunteered thousands of hours of his time coaching youth soccer and basketball. When asked what he misses most about Sand Springs, Wright’s answer is simple. “The people and pride they have in their schools and city. I miss my friends there … and Braums,” he says. Wright is most proud of his family. He and his wife Jamie have three children -- Jason, age 10; Megan, age 15; and Nicole, age 18. He says Nicole plans to follow in his parents’ footsteps and will attend Florida Institute of Technology in the fall to study software engineering.

Meet the We Are Sand Springs Staff
The staff at We Are Sand Springs are, for the most part, constantly working behind the scenes to ensure the best coverage of our great city we can give. This time, we wanted to introduce ourselves to our readers, in hopes that you might get to know each of us a little better.
Danielle Myers serves as the publisher for the magazine, focusing her talents on advertising and approving content. She truly loves what she does and is inspired to make a difference in her community. When she’s not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, playing with her dogs, doing “hot yoga” and watching documentaries.
22 WeAreSandSprings.com | May 2017
D.A. Myers is the operations manager, specializing in graphic design and layout. Originally from Maitland, Fla., he enjoys reading, woodworking and driving his Jeep. If he could have any superpower, he would choose the ability to read minds. His favorite movies are “Memento” and “Inception.”
Account manager Allison Allen focuses her time on special events and social media. If she was a new addition to the crayon box, she would be rose silver, and believes Spiderman would win over Batman in a fight. Aside from work, she loves hanging out with friends and family, petting her dogs and watching baseball.
The newbie to the We Are Sand Springs staff, Kelcey Nobles is the content writer, providing story distribution. A Disney fan, her favorite movie is “The Lion King,” and she is inspired by hard work and determination. In her free time, she can be found out and about with her camera, playing ukulele and spending time with her husband, dog and chinchilla.

Hill. The springs were ultimately lost in construction of the expressway, and today, all that remains is a small fountain of water near the Katy trail.
We started off the afternoon by enjoying a frozen treat at Sandlot Sno-Balls. The snow cone shack, located off of State Highway 97, serves a variety of iced concoctions in a number of different flavors. D.A., Danielle and Kelcey each purchased a pineapple whip, while Allison opted for a junior blue raspberry snow cone. We also picked up a junior wedding cake snow cone and a small silver wedding cake snow cone for the kids.
Later, it was off to dinner at the newly constructed El Maguey. The Mexican restaurant, which recently opened a new location in the River West development, has been a Sand Springs staple for more than 14 years. We enjoyed queso, combo meals and drinks and admired the new construction.
After our quick snack, we visited our city’s namesake: the springs. Located south of the Keystone Expressway near Adams Road, the clear, sandy springs once flowed out of the banks of Home

SSED
Sand Springs Education Foundation The Sand Springs Education Foundation is on a mission to provide local educators with the funding they truly need. “The SSEF’s mission statement is to be a private partner to the Sand Springs Public School (District) in helping bring in creative and innovative materials that cannot be funded through local, state or federal means,” says Sylvia Fooshee, director for the foundation. “Our primary focus is our ‘Grants to Teachers’ program, where teachers or principals at the various school sites can write grants for special materials needed in their various programs.” The SSEF was founded in 1989 to develop supportive community and private sector relationships with the Sand Springs school system. According to Fooshee, it was the dream of local businessman Montie Box. “It had its first beginnings with a ‘Box Supper,’ celebrating 30 years of Montie’s business,” she says. “Those invited were asked to bring something to benefit the schools. A core board was organized, and other fundraisers were held to begin the financial beginnings of the foundation. Since the early 90s, the board gradually grew to 13 members. The first Hall of Fame banquet was held in 1990.” The SSEF’s Hall of Fame banquet is one of two major fundraisers the foundation holds each year; the second being the Golf Classic. “The Sandite Hall of Fame banquet honors former graduates of the district who have gone on to do great things with their careers,” Fooshee says. “This event also highlights our schools (and) grants that were given. Our attendees (also) meet the current Sand Springs teacher of the year, and there is a silent auction held at the beginning of the evening’s festivities. “The other major fundraiser is the Golf Classic, where golfers around the area come together to ‘Tee Up for Education’ on an award-winning course with contributions and sponsorships going toward the ‘Grants to Teachers’ program.” This year’s tournament will be held Sept. 18 at Tulsa Country Club, according to Fooshee. Fooshee also notes that the foundation has raised additional funds for the last four years with the Lincoln Motor Company’s “Driven to Give Day.” All fundraiser proceeds go toward the foundation’s “Grants for Teachers” program. The SSEF is a 15-member board and one of several local education foundations in the state. According to Fooshee, Oklahoma has one of the largest number of local education foundations in the United States. “Each of our major fundraisers collect over $30,000 each,” she says. “Our ‘Driven to Give Day’ has raised $8,000. The SSEF has an investment corpus that also plays a part in how much we can give annually to our ‘Grants for Teachers’ program.” The foundation plays a vital role in the lives of students and teachers alike in the Sand Springs community, supporting the local education system with important funding it might not otherwise receive. “Educating our youth is the best way to insure that our community, state and country can be the best it can be,” Fooshee says. “But as we have seen with recent years, the funding to our schools from our legislators has taken a sharp decline. The SSEF cannot fix all those deficits, but we hope that what we do makes a difference for those teachers, principals and students in bringing creative and innovative materials to their sites that they would not otherwise be able to have.” The Sand Springs Education Foundation is a nonprofit 501c3 organization. For more information, or to get involved with the foundation, visit www.sandspringseducationfoundation.com or call 918-245-6779.

fficials say a renovated park is on schedule A new outdoor event space will also be constructed inside the park. According to Gerondale, this space will overlook for completion later this year.
Once called River City Park, the newly renovated Case Community Park is expected to be completed in the fall, according to City Parks Director Grant Gerondale. The project is jointly funded by Tulsa County’s Vision 2025 plan, which allocated $4.2 million for improvements to the park, and through a donation by local philanthropist Michael Case, who donated $2 million to the City of Sand Springs for park renovation. Gerondale says the 100-acre park is currently getting a facelift. The park currently contains an 18-hole disc golf course, a bicycle and pedestrian trail, and multiple sporting facilities. Improvements include new restroom facilities, new entrance to the park and a new and improved parking lot. New roadway lighting, as well as a new irrigation system and sprinkler system, are also being installed, according to Gerondale. New playground equipment and sporting areas, he says, will include two new large playground toys, two new baseball fields, one new soccer field, a new three-on-three basketball court and new horseshoe pits. A splash pad area was recently installed at the park, he says.

Case Community Center lawn and can host a variety of events and activities. In addition, Gerondale says approximately 200 new trees will be planted throughout the park.
Renovation of Case Community Park is funded, in part, by Proposition 4 of Tulsa County’s Vision 2025 plan, which includes $157.4 million allocated for capital improvements and community enrichment, specifically parks, trails and community centers. According to Gerondale, $4.2 million of that goes to funding for improvements to Case Community Park. Another $2 million, he says, was donated for use at the park by Case & Associates founder Michael Case. Case, a Sand Springs native and frequent philanthropist, has funded various other projects in the community, including Sand Springs’ multi-purpose Case Community Center, which houses the city’s Parks and Recreation offices. CMS Willowbrook, a construction management company based in Oklahoma City, is the developer for the $6.2 million project. Gerondale says construction is scheduled for completion in October.

Allergies... not just for humans. It’s that time of year again – summer sun, fun, and of course, allergies.
Many people are aware that their pets can experience allergies, but the symptoms that your pet experience can be very different from those of people. The most common symptom seen with an allergic pet is itchy skin. This can manifest as obvious scratching of the body, but allergic pets may also lick their feet frequently, rub their faces, shake their heads, and have recurrent skin and ear infections. This is because pets process allergens (things in the environment that cause allergies) in a different way than people. Pets often absorb allergens through the skin, causing itching, redness, and inflammation, but they can also experience sneezing and watery eyes. The symptoms of allergies may be obvious, but the causes of allergies are harder to determine. There are literally thousands of things in your pets surroundings that can cause allergies.. These include trees, grasses, molds, and pollens, but could also be an ingredient in your pets food. One important question is: Does your pet itch year-round, or only at certain times? If your pet itches year-round, a food allergy may be the culprit. This means that your pet could be allergic to one of the ingredients in their food. While common in people, food allergies account for only about 15% in pets. This means that the “grain free” and “all natural” diets that are heavily advertised may not be of much help. The only way to treat a food allergy is with a very specific, specially manufactured diet. Also, no other food – including treats or table food – can be fed or the pet will still experience symptoms. For the seasonally affected, there are many treatments available. These include antihistamines, shampoos, fatty-acid supplements, oral anti-inflammatory medication, and even allergy testing. A consultation with your veterinarian is the first step in maintaining your pets comfort and relief from allergy symptoms.
