Mae David Woodford yn artist sydd yn gweithio yn yr arddull traddodiadol arlunyddol. Mae’n adnabyddus am ei baentiadau tirluniau prydferth o dirwedd Gogledd Cymru lle mae’n llwyddo i gipio’r golau cyfnewidiol, mae hefyd yn cynhyrchu gwaith o gyfanrwydd. Ganwyd David ym 1938, a threulliodd ddyddiau ei blentyndod yn Swydd Amwythig, yma daeth ei obsesiwn gyda’r ‘tir fynydd’, yr olygfa o fynyddoedd Cymru yn gorlifo dros y ffin. Hyfforddwyd yn yr Academi Frenhinol yn Llundain, ac yna yn 1968 fe ymgartrefodd yng Nghymru lle mae wedi byw a gweithio ers hynny. Enillodd y Fedal Aur mewn Celfyddyd Gain yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1983 ac mae wedi adeiladu dilynwyr ffyddlon a brwdfrydig drwy arddangosfeydd yng Nghymru (gan gynnwys sioe yn Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru) a Llundain. Dywed David am ei waith “Rwyf wedi bod yn peintio mynyddoedd Eryri ers dros hanner canrif. Rwy’n amddiffyn yr egwyddorion a’r prosesau traddodiadol yn gyflawn. Mae paeintio eisoes wedi bod yn briodas o amcanion cariad â synwyrusrwydd dynol, empathi lle mae un wedi’i ddwysáu yn nhermau’r llall. Yn yr arddangosfa hon rwyf wedi cyfyngu fy hun i astudiaethau a wnaed yn y man a’r lle. Y tirwedd sydd yn penderfynu beth sydd rhaid gwneud - yn estynedig neu ar frys, y gwirionedd sydd yn cael ei gynnig, golau a thymor a dilysrwydd y foment. Mae’r astudiaethau hyn yn fan prawf am ba bynnag dyluniad mawreddog a gall dilyn.” Nid yw David yn arddangos ei waith yn aml, mae well ganddo adeiladu casgliad dros nifer o flynyddoedd. Nid yw’r sioe hyn yn un i’w golli gan y rhai sydd yn hoff o arlunio ac arluniai traddodiadol o’r ansawdd gorau.
David Woodford is an artist in the painterly tradition. He has become known for his extraordinarily beautiful landscape paintings of North Wales in which he captures the ever-changing light and produces work of great integrity. David Woodford was born in 1938, his childhood years were spent in Shropshire where the Welsh mountains spill over the border. Having trained at the Royal Academy in London, David moved to Wales in 1968 where he has lived and worked ever since. He was awarded the Gold Medal in Fine Art at the 1983 National Eisteddfod and has built up a loyal and enthusiastic following through exhibitions in Wales (including a show at The National Museum of Wales) and London. David says of his work “I have been painting the mountains of Snowdonia for over half a century. I defend the traditional principles and processes of painting as inexhaustive. Painting is, as it always has been, a marriage of the objects of love with human sensibility, an empathy in which one is heightened in terms of the other. This exhibition at Oriel Tegfryn consists of studies made on the spot. The landscape itself demands what must be done – at length or in haste, the truth that is being offered on time, light and season is authenticity of the moment. It is working without yet knowing, the essence more likely if the scale is small; therefore close scrutiny may be rewarding. These studies are the touchstone for whatever grander design may follow. David exhibits infrequently, preferring to build up a body of work over a number of years. This exhibition should not be missed by anyone who loves traditional painting and painterly qualities.
