Ganwyd Martin Collins yng Nghaerloyw ym 1941. Ar ôl astudio Celfyddyd Gain yng Ngholeg Celf Swydd Gaerloyw a Choleg Celf Hornsey, Llundain, aeth ymlaen i ddysgu celf a dylunio yng Ngholeg Nottingham. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn bu’n arddangos yn eang mewn lleoliadau yng Nghanolbarth Lloegr a Gogledd Lloegr, gan gynnwys Neuadd Cartwright, Bradford a Grŵp Midland, Nottingham. Yng nghanol y 1980au fe symudodd i Ddyffryn Conwy yng Ngogledd Cymru, lle mae’n dal i fyw hyd heddiw. Am nifer o flynyddoedd bu’n gweithio ar liwt ei hun ym maes cyhoeddi, mae’n awdur i dros 20 o lyfrau ar gerdded yr arfordir a mynyddoedd yn y DU ac Ewrop. Dychwelodd Martin yn ôl at ei wreiddiau ac ail-ddechrau peintio llawn amser yn 2002. Mae ei ymgais i adlewyrchu drama a harddwch yr amgylchedd naturiol mewn paent wedi arwain at gorff bywiog o waith, yn seiliedig i rannau helaeth ar dirwedd Gogledd Cymru. Mae ei waith mewn llawer o gasgliadau preifat ledled y DU, Ewrop a’r Unol Daleithiau ac ers iddo arddangos gydag Oriel Martin Tinney ac Oriel Tegfryn mae eisoes wedi profi i fod yn un o’n hartistiaid mwyaf poblogaidd, mae gofyn mawr am ei baentiadau atmosfferig gan y rhai sy’n hoff o fannau gwyllt a naturiol. Dywed am ei waith: ‘Daw ysbrydoliaeth o gipolwg, atgof byw, neu gall dyfu o rywbeth sy’n gyfarwydd â’r pwnc, ond beth bynnag yw’r sbardun, mae datblygu’r syniad i beintiad gorffenedig yn medru bod yn broses anodd. Nid oes unrhyw fformiwla ar gyfer llwyddiant, mae’n bwysig bod pob peintiad yn ffres ac yn fywiog ac eto’n sensitif i’r cyfrwng a ddefnyddir. Y gorau y gall unrhyw artist obeithio yw cyfathrebu trwy ei gyfrwng, rhywbeth o’r gwreiddiol, gweledigaeth unigryw a daniodd y broses yn y man cychwyn.’
Martin Collins was born in Gloucester in 1941. He studied Fine Art Painting at Gloucestershire College of Art and Hornsey College of Art, London, before going on to teach art and design at a Nottinghamshire college. During this period he exhibited widely at venues in the Midlands, the north of England and Cornwall. In the mid-1980’s Martin left teaching and moved with his family to the Conwy Valley in north Wales, where he continues to live and work. For a number of years he worked freelance in publishing and is the author of over twenty books on walking the mountains and coastline of the UK and mainland Europe. Martin returned to his artistic roots and resumed full-time painting in 2002. He paints the landscape, drawing from a lifetime’s intimate observation of mountains, moors, countryside and coast. His quest is to reflect the drama and beauty of the natural environment and he does so with bold compositions, vibrant colours and a dynamic application of paint. Often working ‘en plein air’ on his smaller works and at his studio on larger canvasses, his paintings unfold very naturally as he responds intuitively and spontaneously to the scenery. He says of his work: “My relationship with landscape is a profound one. Whilst man-made structures do sometimes feature, my inspiration mainly arises from wild locations where the elements are most keenly sensed; perhaps because of this, there appears to be subtle gravitation towards Celtic lands on the western fringes of Europe.”
