ROBERT PITWELL Robert Pitwell was born in 1964, and studied Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art in the 1990’s. He has worked as a costume and prop maker for Welsh National Opera and numerous other theatre companies, and also teaches fine art and printmaking. He says of his work; ‘These pictures speak of more than just objects: they imply greater surroundings things that have happened, moments that have passed, things that might happen. I am trying to explain something of the world through the everyday. Painting is a language and like all languages it allows a spectrum of possibility that begins with prose and ends in poetry. They are pictures of what has been resisted as well as what has been sought, of what has been removed as well as what has been left.’ SARAH THWAITES Born in 1959, Sarah Thwaites trained at Wimbledon School of Art and Goldsmiths, London. She has been living and working in Wales since 1987. Sarah has had numerous solo exhibitions, and has been included in many group shows, including The Discerning Eye, at the Mall Galleries in London. She says of her work; ‘My work is a personal response to landscapes discovered through time and exploration. A fleeting moment captured from a glimpsed scene or the essence of a place distilled through multiple layers of texture and mark.’ VIVIENNE WILLIAMS Vivienne Williams was born in Swansea in 1955. After completing an MA in ‘The Literary Response to the Visual Arts’ at Reading University, she travelled and taught worldwide. It was whilst in Australia in the early 80’s she took drawing classes, and after returning to Britain to study and work at a Buddhist College until 1990, she became a full time artist. Vivienne’s work is strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism in its celebratory use of colour and its quiet contemplative qualities. She says of her work; ‘Colour is the most important thing in my work: in the bold and rather exuberant flower paintings and the more contemplative still life pictures of pots, bowls, jugs and fruit. The elements within a composition are often rearranged and painted over many times. In this way layers are built up until ordinary paper takes on the appearance and weight of old leather. The surface texture is energetically worked and reworked, scratched, sanded and stained. At any moment during this process there is an opportunity for a painting to emerge.’
