As we jubilantly enter the festivities then crawl back out from underneath them, our liver grumbling and our bodies giving up, what better than to turn our attention to ‘the self’. Be it the body, the face or the hair, we have local businesses ready to offer help and salvation. Meet the team at Beautiful Too on page 22 for some bespoke pampering designed to kick start the new you. We would also like to introduce Danielle who’s getting fit to get hitched in 2015. She will be blogging her progress in the coming issues. If like me, you are gazing into the vacuous landscape of a winter garden, wondering what to replace the void where the washing rotary and imposing trampoline once stood - check out The Gardener’s article for notes on a shrub that will have your garden smelling fragrant and looking pretty over the winter months. If you cannot get the little ones away from their wii or the TV see page 27 for a great offer from First Strokes Swimming. There’s a free swim pack worth £15 up for grabs for any course of swimming lessons booked using the voucher. Go on, get the little darlings moving! Light entertainment your chosen therapy? Look no further than our competition page - yes, you could be in with a chance to win tickets to an evening with the legendary Des O’Connor at Burgess Hall – he will have you crooning your way into health and happiness! And as for us it’s an exciting time as we are in the transition of combining both our issues into one. We are expecting our forthcoming issue in March to be a bumper one as we enter into our new bi-monthly cycle! Expect to see more features and a lot more local businesses through your letterbox and online. Although faithfully, we will be keeping hold of our much loved regular columns and competitions. For now, wishing all our readers and businesses a very Happy New Year! See you again in the Spring.

Home & Garden

Something to Liven up the Gloom

At this rather dull time of year scent is rather scarce in the garden except for a few beautifully scented shrubs one in particular is the Winter flowering Honeysuckle. Lonicera Fragrantissima: (Fragrantissima. Bt.L very fragrant) (Lonicera: After Adam Lonizer (1528-86), German naturalist, and author). Plant origin: China. Found by: famous plant collector Robert Fortune in the mid-19th Century. Description: My favorite winter flowering shrub is. L. Fragrantissima. Winter Honeysuckle. And is, in my mind, one of the best that you can grow in the garden. As I write, I can see it sprawling all over my shed and this will supply me with spicy scented and creamy white flowers from December to early spring, followed by striking red berries. The plant can be semievergreen or deciduous. The flowers are borne on long, woody, arching stems with oval shaped dark green to semi- evergreen leaves. Aspect and Growing: This is a hardy shrub for growing in this country. Any soil will do except the waterlogged kind. The best aspects are a

semi-shaded site or a position in full sun to give it shelter from cold northerly winds. Only prune after flowering, cutting back to the new green shoots to replace the old flowering ones. These shrubs are best planted near a house entrance - close to a wall or by a walkway so that you can appreciate this plant’s sweet and delicious fragrance. It can measure 2 x 3 m. Feed and mulch in the spring using tree and shrub food, and keep it slightly moist during summer. More importantly, make the most of its floral tones over the festive period, decorate your home with a few cut stems of this winter beauty and you will understand way it’s called Fragrantissima. All the best

Law Matters

Many people are unable to help loved ones who have lost capacity, because that loved one has never made a Power of Attorney, authorising anyone to take charge of their financial affairs.

In that situation an Clare Wills application to Court must be made for someone to be appointed the loved ones “Deputy”. This may sound scary but the applicant does not have to attend Court unless there is a problem and they can instruct a lawyer to make the application for them. The whole process is somewhat longwinded. The application is made to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship order. This involves completing and sending to the Court, various forms. The most important of these forms is the capacity certificate. This is sent so the Court can be sure the person whose property and finances the Deputy manages, lacks mental capacity.

Give your Christmas dinner a workout

We all like to indulge over the festive period, especially on Christmas day. But how much exercise does it take to work off all of those tasty calories? Reports suggest that the average person will consume 4,000 to 6,000 calories on Christmas day alone. When you consider the recommended daily intake for men is up to 2,500 and for women is up to 2,000 you might want think about how long it takes to burn off. The Christmas dinner itself is not very unhealthy as turkey is a lean meat and when you tuck into a generous portion of sprouts and carrots with a few roast potatoes – the whole meal can represent a balance menu. However, it is all of the little extras that can start to rack up the numbers on the calorie count! The easiest way to stop feeling guilty is to make a date with Impressions Fitness Suites and have a workout in the gym. To burn off a mince pie with cream (350 calories) will take 5,000 metres on the rowing machine, some bread sauce and cranberry sauce (90 calories) requires 50 leg presses using your own body weight, the sausage stuffing (230 calories) equates to 4k running on the treadmill and each glass of white wine (175 calories) is the

equivalent of swimming 20 lengths in the pool. The Impressions fitness staff are experienced professionals who can design you a personalised fitness programme to help you maintain your fitness and achieve your goals. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you have an enjoyable Christmas day: • Start the day with light breakfast • Make time for a social walk with all the family • Avoid the snacks and stick to eating during main meals • Eat generous portions of veg including your sprouts! • Have a glass of water in between alcoholic drinks to avoid dehydration For further information about Impressions Fitness Suites please contact your local One Leisure site in Huntingdon, Ramsey, Sawtry, St Ives or St Neots or visit www.oneleisure.net

Get fit and get hitched!

by Danni Smith: Get Yourself Talked About

Hairdresser, aspiring garden designer and mum-of-three, Danielle Hughes is on a mission. To drop three dress sizes in time for her wedding to fiancée Lee in November next year. But with three kids – Harrison, 10; Leo, 7; and Fraser, 6; finding time to exercise isn’t going to be easy. Partner Lee, a Personal Trainer at SimplyFit in Godmanchester, is going to be training her – so the pressure is on! Here, Danielle, 32, a ‘proper mint’ Geordie, talks openly about the challenges of losing weight and why she put it on in the first place. So Danielle, why do you want to lose weight? To be healthy and look mint in a wedding dress Mint is Geordie for ‘good.’ It’s really brave of you to share your weight loss challenge with us. Why did you decide to do it? In my head if I’m being public about it, then there’s more pressure to do it. Are you nervous about people reading this? A little bit. What’s your current weight? 18 stone and 1 lb, and I’m a size 18-20. What’s your goal weight? My goal is more dress size than weight. I’d like to get down to a size 14-16 for my wedding. Have you always struggled with your weight? I have always been overweight as an adult. I put weight on as a teenager when I was 13 when my mum and dad split up. That gave me an emotional attachment to food and then it was just about a general lack of fitness and exercise. I put on four stone when I was pregnant with Harrison, lost half of it, then put on a stone with Leo. Then I had Fraser straight away so didn’t really get a chance to lose weight between those two. Then I had three kids and that became my priority. How do you feel about losing weight? It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for years but really struggling with since

having kids. I get quite unhappy about it at times although it doesn’t affect my general happiness. I just get very emotional about it. What will be the hardest thing for you? Staying motivated. It’s hard with the responsibilities I’ve got, the kids and having my own business. As soon as I get a bit stressed when I am busy it’ll be hard not to get into comfort eating and use that as an emotional crutch. Do you feel pressure to lose weight because your partner’s a Personal Trainer? Well, yeah. I feel it’s important to support Lee and being healthier would be a way to support him. What will it be like training with your husband? Do you bicker? We actually started training earlier this year but I stopped because of the school holidays. We haven’t really bickered but I get a bit bossy with him. I find it difficult to do what he tells me! **Lee and Danielle are both laughing at this point. What about you Lee? Do you find it hard training Danielle? I love my job. It gives me a lot of satisfaction encouraging and motivating people to lead a healthier lifestyle. As for working with my wife (that’s how he refers to Danielle), I haven’t got a problem with it. It’s the other way round! Danielle, you’ve agreed to write a regular blog for us sharing your weight loss journey up to your wedding next year. You’ve been amazingly open so far. Can we expect the same in your blog? I feel quite excited about sharing everything with the readers. I’m going to be really honest. Share all my melodramas! All the challenges and difficulties. Danielle’s next blog will include details of her workouts with Lee as well the story of how they met. To contact Lee, Owner and Personal Trainer at SimplyFit in Godmanchester tel: 07713 459 036 Post messages of support on Facebook via My Friend Magazine or Twitter via @myfriendmag. Or tweet Danielle and Lee direct at: @dcolletteh @SimplyFitLee including the hashtag: #GetFitAndGetHitched.

Beautiful Too

When I was asked to visit Beautiful Too in Sawtry, I was eager. On a daily basis, as I rush to make the school run and get to the office, I am met by the ghost of my former self – a dull complexion and broken capillaries that you could get the children to join up with a felt tip pen. And, as I try to assume an upright posture, the weight of the Christmas rush and over usage of the laptop is telling. Sound familiar? As our focus this time suggests, one needs to renew and reinvigorate the mind, soul and body. I met with Charlette, the Business Development Manager at the salon Beautiful Too to help me compile a wish list of treatments. As I entered into the serene green hues and twinkling lights of the salon and I was met by the friendly auras of the team, I suddenly felt a sense of calm envelope me. Beautiful Too offers a wide range of services and products: from beauty and body treatments to nails, skincare and tanning. The owner Nicky Bailey, has grown her business over the years since the early beginnings of running a business from home she has now established a successful day spa in Yaxley and opened Beautiful Too in Sawtry, in October of this year. My first one-on-one is with Rachel, the Dermalogica Specialist. She is very approachable and friendly in her advice and guidance. Rachel can perform what is called free skin mapping - 100% customised consultation, targeting problem areas and finding the best treatments for you. She can tackle everything from tired mum to teenager; and what’s great is the dermalogica skin care range selected to pamper and polish you. No more money wasting purchases trying to find a solution. A Dermalogica Skin Treatment Facial lasts for 60 mins at the amazing price of £44; the treatment includes professional double cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, mask, toner and skin protection. It’s first on my wish list! Grace is the head therapist and next stop consultation. There are two treatments rooms at Beautiful Too where Grace can demonstrate her professional skills and invigorate you back to life. It is suggested that to soothe my weary bones and replenish the old skin (it must really show) - a Gentle Oatmeal & Rice Bran Body Foliation is the ideal winter warmer. It promises to create an effective exfoliant to whisk away dead skin cells and brighten the skin. Rich soothing, botanicals

In tr od uc in g. ..

will leave my skin hydrated, healthy and silky. And for a £30, 30 min treatment this, quite frankly, seems like a medical emergency. It’s not just skincare and treatments that I require. My next consideration is to replenish the dried out contents of my make-up bag (everyone having, as usual, bypassed my Christmas list). Charlette shows me the Jane Iredale skin care make up - 98 % minerals 2% anti-oxidants, exclusive to salons and not available on the high street. This is some of the best mineral make up you will find and competitively priced too. I am even able to get a free skin colour match for all my base needs. Er, yes please. Goodbye to over pale or over baked skin tone and time to book a full makeover. Wish list complete! So it is with a lighter step that I leave Beautiful Too, appointments booked and new friends made. Now it’s time to explain to the other joint account holder that it is all in name of research. All I need quote is “I’m off to get my skin mapped”. I can assure you, no questions will be asked. Beautiful Too have their own Rewards scheme - card stamped for every £10 spent. When you have collected 12 stamps you get £10 off your next treatment.

Godmanchester Water Babies ‘Baby and you’ classes at First Strokes Swim Schools in Godmanchester offer a progressive introduction on learning how to swim and water safety, designed for children aged 4 months to 2 1⁄2 years old. These specialist swim courses teach aquatic breathing through pre-warned submersion using the “ready go” system and the natural mammalian diving reflex. They are unique for you and your little one to feel completely comfortable and build water confidence from birth! We educate you on assisting your baby by learning to hold, interact and encourage your child in the correct way whilst in a safe, positive and enjoyable environment. Basic survival and safety in and around the water including what to do if an emergency should arise are covered in detail. Learning to swim at an early age reduces the chances of your child developing fears, and builds a child’s water confidence and selfbelief as they feel secure. These lessons then move on to developing

the child’s first water skills. First Strokes children are taught simple survival skills, in the form of treading water and recovery to help prepare them for any incident that may occur in and around water. With the use of buoyancy aids and through play, your child is taught to float, move and become independent in the water. First Strokes swimming pools all operate at a perfect temperature of 30 degrees – such as a lovely warm bath! First Strokes understand that swimming is a necessary life skill but that learning should be fun and enjoyable. To book your lessons please email: Godmanchester@firststrokes.com or call 0845 838 8953 Swimming begins here . . .

Marketing trends for 2015 Laura Varey

Christmas and New Year has arrived with a BANG!! All of a sudden you realise that the marketing plans for the coming year that you would get round to in 2014 never got done. If you had plans written for 2014, why not review them to see what worked and what didn’t and take a look at the top 6 predicted trends for 2015 and see how you can incorporate them. Trend 1 - Relax the brand controls The consumption of digital media is on the increase and with this is the amount of content created by customers who love what brands have to offer, and sometimes negative feedback will be included. Embracing this the collaboration with customers can also increase co-creation of new products. Trend 2 - Humanise the brand We talked about this is last months edition of Marketing Magic and according to research by Lippincott “Brands that behave like humans find more favour with customers”. Consumers no longer buy a product they buy a lifestyle, and through making your brand more human you are becoming more transparent and moving away from customer cynicism. Trend 3 - Maximise converged content It is believed that content marketing will be taken to the next level promoting it through paid-for social media strategy. Social Media won’t be the only determining factor in this evolution; mobile, smart TV’s and understanding coding will also play a part. Trend 4 – Take more risks Without risk there is no gain! Being versatile and reactive to any brand can be scary but sometimes it’s the big decisions that pay off. Don’t be afraid to look at what is news topical or current and put an opinion out there as long as you can react and rectify any 30

negativity it is one way to raise awareness of your brand. Brands becoming more reactive can capitalise on 58 million consumer tweets a day, according to Social Media Examiner. Trend 5 – Stay ahead of gen Z Keeping ahead of the next generation is never easy especially now when they are less patient and more difficult to impress. Therefore reaching them requires excellent content on the right media and the right time. Twitter has changed the way media is consumed, from breaking news to viral content; the tech savvy younger generation no longer see the need for email, all they need is text and social media according to Marketing Week’s Secret Marketer. Trend 6 – Merge data with creativity At its best data and creativity combine and result in the best program possible. Data has been captured for years; marketers saw the introduction of Tesco Club Card combine creative personalised marketing with data. With advancements in technology you can now monitor who is visiting your website which content they are interested in and how long they were there. Thus giving sales teams and marketers the data required personalised marketing and sales messages to convert into a sale. Planning your marketing is invaluable – if it’s written down your more likely to do it! For more top tips on marketing visit my website: www.jigsawcommunications.co.uk
