Shopping Loved, lost and found again. anuary is no longer the time of renewal but anytime Jembark from September onwards is an opportunity to on a new talent or interest. It is not customary
to wait for January when you already feel the financial burden or lack of joie de vivre. What can stop you? Motivation or ‘crear’ (as I like to call it). Chat to anyone who is artistic and they might well reveal a debilitating fear of fulfilling their creative urge but not wanting to fail. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, those who have never tried it and quiver at unchartered territory. Local businesses like the shop at forty in St Neots, have picked up on this. A great place to shop and host to a number of creative activities, it has become a social hub that encourages like-minded folk to adopt new skills in a relaxed environment, helpfully nurtured by many a cuppa to relieve the aforementioned shackles. Proof is in the pudding. Established in 2013 by Sharon Walker and Lee Burrett, the shop at forty has moved from a workshop in the garden to winning business of the year in the St Neots Business and Community Awards. Praise indeed. Sharon, not surprisingly, has two very creative daughters, Holly and Lilly, and together, with some of their local friends, run a series of workshops. From lampshade making and sewing ds

masterclasses to cushion making and bunting. A one-off course could be the answer to the new/old you and you can do this in their company, all year round. If workshops aren’t your cuppa and shopping is, this is still a place to hang out and meet new friends. You can while away the time browsing retro and revamped furniture, stocking up on birthday cards, rifling through the button box, deciding on which farrow and ball paint you are finally going to opt for and consider a coffee and biscuit as a post-purchase reward. You may even eye up the chairs that friendly strangers are perched on, and after the strangers have gone, buy them, knowing that like you, they have been loved, lost and found again. Celebrating 10 years
I discovered my love for retail after working in the gift department of John Lewis. The variety of products and buying behaviours during peak season outshone all other departments. A gift for a loved one makes for the best purchase because of the thought behind it. I was hooked!
Launching in September 2005, we began buying in small products, mainly for women. We then increased our range and introduced gifts for men and children. Now, we have moved to larger premises, successfully launched our website and find ourselves 10 years old – Phew!

Mince pies are a solid christmas tradition and whether you make the mincemeat yourself or buy a good quality one here is how to impress your guests with those added touches that make them homemade and so so tasty!

75g caster sugar 1 /2 tsp ground cinnamon Financier (almond cake) topping: 150g egg white 100g caster sugar 50g flour 50g ground almonds 70g melted butter Few drops of vanilla extract
1. Mincemeat mixture - mix the mincemeat, salt, sugar, orange zest, cinnamon. Keep in the bowl covered in cling film until ready to use. 2. Dice the butter and rub it into flour using your fingertips until resembles fine breadcrumbs. 3. Add the sugar, ground almonds and stir through the flour and butter mixture. Mould into a dough using a little water or milk. Wrap the dough in clingfilm and rest in the fridge. 4. Flour the work surface and roll out the pastry as thinly as possible. 5. Cut out approximately 12 rounds with pastry cutter and place them in base of patty tin(s). 6. Fill each case with about 3 tps of mincemeat mixture. Bake in the oven for approx. 15-20 minutes until golden brown. 7. For the topping whisk the egg whites and sugar together until stiff, stir in the flour, ground almond, melted butter and vanilla extract. Place a dollop on top of each mince pie and cook again in the oven for approx. 5 mins until golden and firm to touch.

Is ‘the workhub’ the way forward for Cambridgeshire’s growing number of self-employed? By Danni Smith, Get Yourself Talked About
There are currently 4.6 million self-employed people in the UK - the highest number since records began 40 years ago. According to the Office for National Statistics, anni Smith D this accounts for 15% of the workforce. The East of England (which includes Cambridgeshire) now has the fourth highest concentration of self-employed people after London, The South West and the South East. With self-employment on the rise, where do all the self-employed people spend their days? One alternative to working from home is the ‘workhub’ where businesses rent flexible workspace. Here, Danni Smith, self-employed director of PR firm, Get Yourself Talked About, investigates the benefits of a workhub with a visit to the Cambridge Business Lounge. If I wrote a list of everything I love about working for myself it would include all the obvious things like being in charge of my own destiny; fitting work around important events in my children’s calendars, as well as coming up with my own ideas and pitches. As far as the cons go though, number one on my list of ‘things to improve’ would have to be daily social interaction. Or the lack of. Which is why a venue like the Cambridge Business Lounge is so appealing to people like me. Opened in 2013 by Startup Mentor Ed Goodman and wife, Nicky Smerdon-Goodman, the Lounge attracts businesses from both Cambridge and surrounding towns and villages - with ‘regulars’ from places such as Burwell and St Ives. Described as ‘a hot-desk and co-working community in the heart of Cambridge’, the Lounge offers everything a regular office has including meeting rooms and a kitchen. In addition to this, however, it also offers ‘virtual office services’ (including a professional answering service); mentoring, networking and training events. Businesses can rent a desk space for a day, or book four-day or eight-day passes. Others choose to base themselves at the lounge permanently.
Ed - who prior to setting up the Lounge worked for Barclays, training in-house staff in the small business and retail sector, and later for BCSG as a Senior Training Manager - has, himself, worked from home in the past and says: “I often spent half a day working in my pyjamas before I even got dressed.” But for him, commuting wasn’t the answer either. “When I worked from home part-time, I didn’t enjoy commuting into London but when I was at home I felt like an outsider. Not because of anything my firm did, but because I felt I was missing out.” Ed says there’s two main reasons for people using the Cambridge Business Lounge. “The first is because it gives you a productive discipline. When you leave home and go to work your mindset changes. Second is the sociability aspect. All of us are hard-wired to be sociable.” An added bonus of using somewhere like the lounge is the ability to fall back on the advice and support of all the different businesses around you. One business I spoke to regularly trades financial advice for a little IT help. Having co-written a book called “Next Steps - The All-in-One Guide to Managing, Marketing and Growing Your Small Business” with Business Coach Ann Hawkins, Ed clearly understands the pitfalls and challenges faced by every small business. Apart from Cambridge, Ed and Nicky also run a ‘popup’ hub in St Ives, which runs on the first Thursday of every month, with more set to open this year and next in Ely, Newmarket and Saffron Walden. So, with the number of self-employed on the rise, are workhubs the way of the future? “I hope so,” says Ed, “because the best support for people working for themselves is from other people working for themselves because they know exactly what it feels like to walk in your shoes. I’m not saying working from home is bad for people. Some people love that but there needs to be an alternative for those who don’t.” As the sign outside the lounge says: “Working for yourself doesn’t mean working by yourself.”

In the Summer Budget of July 2015 it was proposed that Inheritance tax (IHT) be scrapped on homes which parents or grandparents pass on to children, grandchildren or step children. The new rules will be phased in gradually Clare Wills between 2017 and 2020. However, they are complicated and the way the new legislation works in practice needs explaining. Who pays IHT? You do if your assets are above the threshold! As a starting point it is worth remembering who currently pays IHT. In the 2015/16 tax year, everyone is allowed to leave an estate valued at up to a £325,000 without their beneficiaries paying IHT. The amount is set by the Government and is called the nil-rate band threshold. Above the nil-rate band, anything you leave behind is subject to tax of 40% (or 36% if you leave at least 10% of your assets to a charity). So if you leave assets worth £500,000, your estate pays nothing on the first £325,000, and 40% on the remaining £175,000 – a total of £70,000 in IHT - if you’re not leaving anything to charity or a spouse or civil partner. The £325,000 limit has been frozen until at least 2020/21, although the “extra” main residence allowance will be brought in from 2017 onwards. The new proposals are as follows: The current allowance where no IHT is charged on the first £325,000 (per person) of someone’s estate remains unchanged. Above the threshold, the charge is 40%. A new tax-free ‘main residence’ band will be introduced from 2017, valid only on a main residence and where the recipient of a home is a direct descendant (classed as children, step-children and grandchildren). This will be phased in gradually, starting at £100,000 in April 2017, rising by £25,000 each year until it reaches £175,000 in 2020.
In 2017 the maximum that can be passed IHT free will be £850,000 for married couples and civil partners and £425,000 for others. For singles, this is made up of the existing £325,000, plus the “extra” £100,000 main residence band. For couples, when the first dies their allowance is passed to the survivor, so that £425,000 is doubled to £850,000. In 2020, the tax-free amount will rise to £1m for couples and £500,000 for singles, made up of the existing £325,000 and the “extra” main residence allowance of £175,000. On properties worth £2 million or more, homeowners lose £1 of the ‘main residence’ allowance for every £2 of value above £2m. Lights, camera, Action! It’s finally here. The Hollywood or bust calendar is in stock and flying off the shelves faster than anticipated. Launched at the beginning of October in time for the Breast Cancer Awareness month, the calendar features the beautiful women of the Primary Breast Cancer Support Group at the Woodlands Centre, in Hinchingbrooke Hospital. Hollywood or Bust is not about the negativities of breast cancer, instead it celebrates femininity and strength. Many women who have had breast cancer have lost one or both breasts, their hair, eyelashes, eyebrows . . . essentially robbed of many things recognised as feminine. Hollywood or bust is to empower the women’s inner goddess, to revive their confidence and let them see that they are still, and always have been, beautiful. Their transformations (visually and emotionally) have been an honour to witness and photograph. Yes, this is about
fundraising for the Primary Breast Cancer Support Group, but fundamentally it’s about awareness for support groups. It’s about promoting their positivity and the good they can do for women during a vulnerable time. Through the Hollywood or Bust project alone, more women have come forward for essential support and the bond that they’ve shared has been amazing and a privilege to see.
