CAN’T FIND YOUR DREAM HOME? With the current housing shortage, Malcolms have noticed that local people are reluctant to put their home on the market for fear of not being able to find a suitable property to move to. We understand that no one wants to take the risk of selling their home and having nowhere to move to. This can create a selfperpetuating cycle whereby homeowners

Welcome . . .
to our summer issue where the promise of some finer weather will have us emerging from our houses at last, tending to our lawns and recalling who our neighbours are again. It’s an exciting time for My Friend this month as we launch our website full of news, features and exclusive competitions - celebrating all that’s great about Huntingdonshire local businesses. The Taproom in St Ives are helping our launch by offering one lucky recipient some vouchers to dine or drink with them. All you have to do is go to our website to be in with a chance of winning! But if that wasn’t enough turn to page 45 for our other competition - The Mermaid at Ellington are kindly offering a meal for two, if you need any persuading to enter, our Secret Diner reviews it also. Our summer feature is for foodie lovers - whether by bike, foot or on wheels, our map of local foodie routes will give you some ideas of where to seek that perfect summer menu. Not wanting to venture far? See our ‘shop local’ feature on page 12 with tips to kit out your garden and bump up your food stocks for those afternoon barbecues and twilight suppers that really only require the best local produce and a bap or two. Check out the recipe on page 15 and add some personality to your al fresco menu with the help of the head chef at The George. Amongst our regular columns we have a new property feature, ‘Snooping Around’ - a chance to peek at some of this regions hot properties. James Cox has the answer to this seasons essential wardrobe items for men in our Meet the Expert feature and with lots more besides be inspired over May and June: glam up your garden, kit our your summer wardrobe or take a trip for the taste buds and you will forget all about that winter coat, stews and box sets on the sofa. Thank you to all the local businesses who have supported our features this issue. We wish all our readers a sprinkling of sunshine and gloriously long days in the great outdoors.
Bye for now!

Butterfly Heaven
Buddleja. (Butterfly bush) In honour of Reverend Adam Buddle 1660 - 1715, an English botanist and vicar of Farmbridge in Essex. Often once spelled Buddleia but now spelled Buddleja. Family Buddlejaceae. c. 100 species. Origin. Africa, Asia, Western China and South America. Description - Every keen gardening enthusiast should have these two fantastic shrubs in their garden. These shrubs are mainly deciduous or can be semi-evergreen grown for their summer to autumn clusters of small, often very fragrant flowers on long arching lax stems. A fantastic sight when in a floridus flow and surrounded by red admiral butterflies flattering around feeding on the sweet nectar from the fragrant honey like flowers Aspect and growing - Fully to half-hardy shrubs requiring full sun and fertile, light, well-drained soils. Prune them back hard from early spring all old flowering stems to within two or three pairs of healthy buds off the main woody framework, B.crispa, B. davidii, B. fallowiana, B. Lochinch, and B x weyeriana. Maximum I like buddleja davidii and crispa. These two are best grown in a sheltered sunny corner or next to a warm sunny wall. I had these two growing against my south facing wall in my old house and they never failed to surpass themselves and a magnet for attracting butterflies. They have woolly grey leaves and short, rounded panicles of honey scented lilac-like flowers, which are usually borne over quite a long period from about midsummer until the frosts. These are large bushy shrubs and so require plenty of space. Aspect - grow these shrubs in a sheltered sunny wall / corner, border, and near any seating areas, so that you can you can get the benefit along with the display of butterflies! Also try B. alternifolia which will be clothed in butterflies from summer to autumn. Lavandula. From the Latin lave (to wash) from its use in soaps and toiletries and other various uses.
Family. Labiatae. Butterflies love these shrubs which are excellent plants for the wild life or cottage garden. Description. These are fragrant evergreen, bushy shrubs mainly from the Mediterranean. Having dense spikes of fragrant, deep purple, pink to light blue flowers from midto late summer and linear, aromatic silver- grey leaves. Aspect and Growing. These plants prefer full sun, fertile and very well-drained soils not cold wet heavy ones! Most are frost hardy. Give them shelter from strong northerly winds. Best planted near paths, walkways, or in borders. Prune back in May; do not cut back into old wood but try to keep their natural form removing the old flowering stems so stimulating new shoots producing flowering spikes later in the season. Avoid the tabletop cut at all costs. Dead head in autumn. If the plants are exposed to harsh winter conditions keep some of the old growth on for winter protection. The best ones are: L. pedunculata. (Butterfly Lavender.) L. angustifolia. (Known as Munstead Lavender.) L. x intermedia. (English Lavender.) L. stoechas. (French Lavender.) Happy Gardening.

Alarm bells for Deeds of Variation following the Budget.
Clare Wills
By Wills Jacobsen
Now the dust has settled after the recent budget, most people are focusing their thoughts on the forthcoming general election.
One aspect of the budget which was not heavily reported was the Chancellor’s promise of a crackdown on inheritance tax avoidance by a review of the use of deeds of variation. So should we be worried? A deed of variation is a way of changing a Will or the Intestacy Rules after someone has died. The most common reason for making such a change is so a parent who is well off already, can pass inherited money they do not need, to their own children without any Inheritance tax implications. A deed of variation must be completed within 2 years of a person’s death. Deeds of variation can be quite sophisticated and move inherited cash into a Family trust which can go on looking after generations of a family for up to 125 years. Deeds of variation are not just tax planning vehicles. They can ensure estates pass as families’ wish where there is no will or where circumstances have changed. When somebody dies without a will, a deed of variation may ensure the surviving spouse can stay in their home. This is really important when you consider that over two thirds of people still don’t have a will. A deed of variation can be a lifeline in these circumstances. Deeds of variation have been around for generations and mostly used to enable the handling of estates between families. However their use is now being questioned by the current government who view them as a mechanism for tax avoidance.
Following the budget there will be a review report by this autumn which will look at cases where individuals use deeds of variation to alter a will, in order to pass bequests on to their children, thereby removing sums from their own estates for Inheritance tax. Depending on the outcome of the election, it is possible that abolition of deeds of variation may be pushed through quickly. In view of the above proposals it is more than important than ever that people ensure that their wills reflect their up to date wishes and circumstances. Too often people ignore changes in their circumstances in the knowledge that their beneficiaries have the ability to enter into a deed of variation to amend their will. In particular those exposed to inheritance tax need to ensure their wills are tax efficient now. It may also be useful to make a deed of variation now if you are in a position to do so, rather than waiting for the outcome of the review. There was a small glimmer of hope following the announcement by the Chancellor with some saying it was a cheap political jibe at the opposition. Earlier this year Ed Miliband was revealed to have used a deed of variation to pass on a family property on his father’s death. Whether or not this is the case remains to be seen and to be honest my advice is “don’t take a chance and wait”. Contact Clare Wills for advice about any of the above areas on 01487 842 789.

#Get fit and get hitched!
The beginning of spring is birthday season in my house. From mid-February to the end of March we have six family birthdays to celebrate, three of those being my sons’ birthdays just two weeks apart from each other. In the past this has been the perfect excuse to make and eat large quantities of cake. I do love cake. This year I decided that cupcakes were the best way to consume cake in a controlled way, so I could count up the calories for each cake and allow for ONE in my daily calorie allowance. For the first time ever in my house there were cakes left over a whole week after they were made. It felt like a breakthrough - I got a great feeling of self-worth for having self -control, when faced with cake. I am now starting to feel the benefits of being active and eating a healthy diet. My friends, family and even mums at school have started to notice my weight loss, and the little bounce in my step. It’s a great feeling to have my big effort acknowledged, although I still feel like I have so far yet to go. At the beginning of March I bought a dress for my step-brother’s wedding. When it arrived, it fitted so well and I was excited about wearing it. This was the first time I’ve felt positive about clothing in such a long time. The wedding was in the North East at the end of March, so we planned to make a whole weekend of it. We stayed with different family each night. It was so good to spend time with them, and have a weekend off from calorie counting. The wedding was so much fun and the atmosphere was relaxed and happy. There were some great ideas that I will definitely take inspiration from for our wedding in November. I felt confident dancing - armed with plenty of Zumba moves, I danced for hours. Getting back into the routine of keeping my food diary was difficult when I returned from our weekend away. I was tired from travelling and it was also the Easter holidays. I missed Zumba for a whole week, although I was still staying active running about after the boys and training with Simply Fit. Lee and I shared a chocolate bunny as an Easter treat. I really www.myfriendmagazine.co.uk
enjoyed it but didn’t like sharing much! The days of eating to excess are now behind me, and if I do overindulge a little, I don’t beat myself up about it. I just get straight back to being good. Looking at pictures of pretty ladies in wedding dresses helps me stay focused. It’s only eight months now until the wedding. It hadn’t felt real until I finally sent out Save the Date cards to my family and friends. Getting excited replies from family made me realise just how important it is to be making this commitment to each other. The hours spent looking at all things weddings on Pinterest have helped me get an idea of how I want the wedding to be. Lee has spent considerably less time looking on Pinterest (!) but has had some great ideas along the way. I haven’t managed to go wedding dress shopping as I’d hoped, although that’s only down to me being ‘less than eager’ to arrange it with my Mum and friends. I have had some anxiety about the dress shopping experience. I generally don’t try clothes on in shops. In the past it’s not been an enjoyable experience due to how I felt about my own body. Picking clothes up that looked nice, then when I tried them on they wouldn’t fit or just generally looked terrible. There’s also that embarrassment of always having to look towards the back of the rail for my size hoping that they have it in XXL. Even though I’ve lost just over 2 stone now and I’m in a comfortable size 16, my mind set hasn’t caught up with me yet. Despite this, I’ve finally booked a dress shopping day with my mum for May, when hopefully I’ll be able to dismiss that anxiety and really enjoy the experience. Thanks for reading and your continued support. Read how Danielle moves closer to her wedding day goal with her blog in the next issue. Over 100 years of care!
Cromwell Vets is one of very few independent Veterinary Practices in the Huntingdonshire area. We’ve been around for generations and one of an elite group of Practices to celebrate 100 years in 2011. The Practice still stands on the same site on St Johns Street in Huntingdon where it all began! Today we have 6 surgeries in Cambridgeshire and the Huntingdon location also houses our exceptional 24hr Hospital, where a Vet and Nurse are always on site. Our hospital is central to our branch surgery locations (St Neots, St Ives, Ramsey, Sawtry and Cambourne). This means you won’t have a long arduous drive to reach our experienced staff in an emergency, whatever time of day or night it is! Eileen brought her Pointer, Harriet, into our hospital early on a Sunday morning when she was having problems giving birth. “My dog had to have an emergency caesarean very early on a Sunday morning! The Vets and the Nurses were fantastic and acted quickly, she was given the very best attention and care …. My dog
and her 9 puppies survived. I could not praise or thank them enough!” Harriet and her puppies spent a few hours in our Hospital and soon returned home where they all continued to do well and thrive.
Even if you don’t need us in an emergency, we’re here for you - all our surgeries are open 6 days a week and evening appointments are also available. For those stressful pets or if you have difficulty getting them to our surgeries, you will find our popular home visit service particularly helpful. For a professional service with staff who truly care, join the Cromwell family.
As pet owners we all want the best for our pets & this includes keeping them healthy & happy. So why not join the Cromwell Vets family? A quality caring professional service for all pets.

The Road to Renewal Challenge 2015 a year of
Reinvigorating Trust
Take the first step! Imagine the excitement of a new start: a past that throws no shadows; the possibility of a different future from the one that you feared. The first step is to clarify what are your priorities and goals – and, importantly, to know why they are driving your life’s decisions.
Our 2020 Vision: The Road to Renewal is a focus on positive change that transforms our communities to mend “broken Britain”.
Dr Chan Abraham Group Chief Executive

Since March 2000 we have been building a team of people who, daily inspired in their work, seek consistently to give excellent service to our customers. This energises our residents, business partners and the wider community and helps us all find a sense of purpose, hope and fulfilment. As we change, transformation occurs and a brighter future becomes reality.
