Dear all. . .
As we start preparing for the summer holidays, there is so much to think about: enhancing your summer wardrobe and the wedding outfit to source, booking hair appointments to rescue sun-scorched tresses, neighbours to bribe to look after your failing hamster, activities to keep the little ones occupied over that long summer holiday and allocating your holiday spends to both your decorator and gardener before that big summer soiree event you carelessly created in the pub one evening. Yikes! Whatever category you fall into, we have a few suggestions in our pages to help you enjoy summer. My Friend has great local days out this summer to inspire you on page 8 whether it’s a staycation or ways to entertain the kids there is plenty of options on your doorstep which don’t require excessive fuel consumption. Our shopping focus on the Chequers Court Shopping area in Huntingdon unveils the smart retailers who are big on brands, hot on service and happy to share their expertise on your requirements so you don’t have to shrink wrap yourself until autumn. Danielle keeps us up to date with her fitness blog on page 35 which will inspire any of you to get the endorphins pumping if vitamin D levels from an English summer don’t work alone. Bit harsh? Maybe. What’s more, we feature our usual columns: the secret diner ventures to Stilton, we’ve got summer reads ready for your holiday, a decedant chocolate recipe from the George in Buckden, The Gardener shares some more tips and advice and we have THREE competitions! Win a meal for two at the newly named Riverport Grill in St Ives on page 41, also win a meal for two at Godmanchester’s newest eatery - The Grand Piano Café details on page 43 and finally we have a family ticket to win for Shepreth Wildlife Park! Happy reading! We hope you have a fruitful and fun packed summer. See you again in the autumn.

There’s more to Huntingdon than you think!
Ranked in the Top Ten ‘Rural Areas Quality of Life’, Huntingdon has lots of attractions just waiting to be enjoyed. And it’s about to get a whole lot better. New businesses are coming to town and the summer holidays promise an array of bright entertainment for all the family. Build your sandcastles in the Market Square at The Huntingdon Beach Party on Sunday 19th July. World-class Covent Garden performers take to the centre with gasp-inducing acts! The Black Eagles, stars of Glastonbury, the Commonwealth Games and Blue
Peter no less, astound with their acrobatic skills. Make a date for Saturday 25th July. Saturday 1st August prepare for a spectacle that’s a little hard to believe. Bendy Em! She’s headlined international festivals and
appeared in X-Men Origins, Wolverine. Why? Well she’s one of the world’s leading contortionists. This pintsized entertainer can fit her lithe frame into a sixteen inch Perspex box. Seriously. Then there will be those firm family favourites, Dave the Balloon Man (FREE balloon models), popular face painters (FREE too) and award-winning dancers from the Wendy Burke School of Dance. All are appearing at both events on 25th July and 1st August. And here all year are a choice of boutique and national shops, historic heritage, riverside walks and fun activities making Huntingdon the perfect place to visit when you’re looking for things to do. All of the fun and smiles above (except the Beach Party which is organised by Churches Together) are brought to you by Huntingdon First, the ‘brand name’ of BID Huntingdon where businesses and organisations work together to make Huntingdon a better place for all. Consumer My Friend meets the neighbours of Chequers Court. Where much of the focus has been on the hoarding and what’s coming to Huntingdon’s Chequers Court, My Friend wanted to shine a light on those businesses already here and doing rather well. With Peterborough and Cambridge being the main competition, we meet some of the traders who are really striving to bring their expertise, big name brands and bespoke service to this traditional market town. No.10 Music Street. Tony and the team pride themselves on expertise and customer satisfaction. The shop stretches further back than you would imagine with even a space upstairs for musicians to practise their talents. Products range from ukuleles to guitars worth over £2,000 plus they have an online ordering service, offer advice and hold local workshops revealing they are more than just a high street fixture. Be adventurous, find out about that guitar you have always wanted to play. Still dithering? Check out resident guitarist Joel jamming on their Facebook page for some awesome sounds that will inspire you. No. 16 The Brampton Pie Company. Family sized pies, romantic pies for two and individual pies - you name it this pie shop does it! Their pies even extend to the sweet variety - hearty fudge tarts, sumptuous fruit pies and warming crumbles. Product is king here and the commitment to good quality is key, ‘We will never compromise our quality by offering less filling or a lower meat content and definitely no mechanically recovered meat’. Hear, hear! The smell is divine as you approach; the crusts are golden and enticing. Guarantee a smile on the faces of loved ones - walk through the door with one of these beauties. Heat and serve.
No.22 Chequers Shoes. Rod is a man of vision for the town and, since opening in the spring of 2014, has been successful in introducing bigger brands to the town - names such as Skechers, Havaianas, Hotter, Rieker - to offer a range of shoes across the ages. You get the sense that Rod enjoys what he does, making people feel good about themselves, listening to his customer’s needs. It is the old fashioned values of high street shopping that you feel privy to here and shows, despite online ordering, it’s still great to go out and experience the real thing. No.14 Deavesons Jewellers. Keith runs successful stores in both Wisbech and Huntingdon and is a master of his trade. This is not your average high street jewellers; the Huntingdon store is smart and sophisticated. They are an exclusive partner for Thomas Sabo and stock other leading brand names such as Trollbeads, Kit Keath, Endless, Bouton, Daisy, Virtue, Sekonda,Superdry watches and Rotary. Keith is proud of the bespoke handmade jewellery design service and wants his customers to experience the quality of the products, offering intimate consultations with wine or coffee to add to the ambience. With the possibility of jewellery demonstrations in the pipeline this is a company who strives for excellence and wants to share the authentic experience. I guarantee you will not be able to walk past without morphing into a Gollum-like trance admiring all the shiny treasure. No.18 Blades Hair Salon. The salon opened in 1980, demonstrating their longevity and experience. The reason for success? They are passionate about investing in their styling team; customer care is all about ‘ensuring each and every client who steps through our door experiences an individual and personal service.’
1 The salon itself is a chic and contemporary haven from the busy footfall area of Chequers Court. Colour is their specialism offering a free consultation to every client, taking into account your skin tones to find the perfect colour match, making the whole experience feel bespoke and professional. No.6 Robert Goddard Distinctive Clothing established since 1895, opened last summer but also runs successful stores in Wisbech, March and Spalding. They pride themselves on offering great brands such as Armani, Diesel, Great Plains, Ted Baker, Superdry, Gant and recently Hugo Boss, thus showing their confidence and status in the high street. Their website and blog feeds keep you updated on new collections so you don’t miss out on the brands coming locally to you. Go inside and meet the team, you can reinvent yourself, spruce up your summer wardrobe or simply make a wish list of your next ‘must haves’. From these brief glances into local business in Chequers Court, it is plain to see there is a real sense of innovation and commitment to guaranteeing the best services, great brands and, above all else, a thriving retail hub - just check out a very small selection of whats on offer. . . . Be in the know: Huntingdon First is the ‘brand’ name for BID Huntingdon where businesses and organisations work together to make Huntingdon a better place for all. Kitchens in Cambridgeshire will never be the same again!
re
A new Dream Doors kitchen makeover store is coming to Godmanchester, customers will be able to give their kitchen a facelift for just a fraction of the cost of a full kitchen re-fit. Local resident Kevin Thornton is set to open the Dream Doors showroom on The Causeway on 1st July. Kevin has been trading from home over the past few months and already has a number of happy customers, who saved time and money using the kitchen makeover service. A local customer who had their kitchen doors and drawers replaced gave a glowing testimonial on the independent consumer monitoring website, Checkatrade: “The service was professional, outstanding and they were very courteous. An excellent company.” Another customer also gave Dream Doors top marks for having their worktops changed, simply stating: “Everything was carried out perfectly.” Dream Doors offers a variety of services, from replacing the doors and drawers to designing and fitting an entire new kitchen, as well as offering a host of white goods and appliances. All its doors are made-to-measure and of the highest quality, coming in a variety of different styles and colours. A w m ly Ne roo Ju ay, 9 2H w st ew 2 o Sh ns 1 aus r PE e C te Op he es
Dream Doors was established in 1999 and now has more than 50 locally-owned franchised showrooms throughout the country. Kevin’s showroom will cover all of the southern PE postcodes, transforming kitchens and saving up to 60% compared with a full re-fit. “I’m a local resident and my Dream Doors showroom will be a family-run business,” said Kevin. “But the support I get from Dream Doors head office means my customers get the best of both worlds - the ease and comfort of dealing with a local resident, with the added security of a national brand and all the support that brings with it. Dream Doors kitchen makeovers have been enormously popular all over the UK and I can’t wait for the showroom to open so I can really show what can be achieved, just by replacing kitchen doors and work surfaces.” All Dream Doors kitchen doors and drawers are fitted in a single day. It’s a convenient solution that leaves kitchens looking like new, but without the stress and upheaval of a full refurbishment. Contact Kevin on 01480 877449, visit www.dreamdoors.co.uk or call into the showroom on 01487 411500 after 1 July.

Bells of Enchantment
Convallariea. majalis. Hardy perennial. (Lat. Convallis - a valley i.e. from its growing habitat.) Common name: Lily-of-the-valley, in the family Convallariaceae. Contains one variable species, C. majalis. They mainly inhabit the woods, mountain, meadows and crevices in limestone rocks from Western Europe to Eastern Asia. Hence the name Lily of the valley! One of the most beautifully scented flowers for late spring, either outdoors or in! Description Rhizomes creeping perennial with flowering stems to 15 cm/ 6in, with wiry roots from a creeping rootstock, forming large patches in time. Stems with 1-4 deciduous leaves with sheathing, and stem - like bases. Sweet scented nodding, bell-shaped, 5 - 13 white or pink, flowers on a long arching, leafless stalk. Pollination is mainly by bees. The fruit is a berry.
Forcing The scent of these beautiful plants is usually lost outdoors but if grown undercover you get the full benefit from their elegantly scented flowers. They can be forced for early flowering indoors during early to mid-spring. Lift 2-3 year old crowns for forcing in autumn and pot them up into well crocked pots of well mixed soil: equal parts of loam, leaf mould, and sharp sand. Over winter, place in a cold bright position or move into a cold frame and keep them just moist, increasing the watering as the growth proceeds and the temperatures rise, then bring them back indoors somewhere cool and bright c .13c/ 55 f. Grown this way, they will last longer. Plant back out after flowering to recover. Feed & water them until they go dormant. Propagate by division post flowering or, by ripe seed, continue to grow in a garden frame. Species /cultivars C, majalis. Fortin’s giant, ‘Hardwick Hall’. C. majalis. ‘Aureo’ - variegata. Tip Try to water your hanging baskets early morning or early evening - once the sun is off them, the plants will be able to take up the water without it evaporating first, which will happen very quickly in hot weather. Have watering cans at the ready, filled with water and a little bit of feed - it will save you time when you are in a hurry!
Aspect and Growing C. majalis. (B.L. mah-yah-lis. flowering in May) an extremely cold - tolerant species which can take very cold aspects. They are eminently suited to the wild, woodland or to cottage garden design. They make excellent plants for groundcover or under planting in shrub or herbaceous borders. Plant in semi-shade and in deep fertile, humus - rich moisture retentive soil. A thick mulch of well-rotted organic matter should be applied in autumn. These plants have creeping rhizomes so should be sited with care; once established they are great plants for colonizing a woodland / cottage garden design! Water well in prolonged dry weather.
Happy Gardening.

Legal
Law Matters
The Care Act 2014 replaces most current law regarding carers and people being cared for. Part of the Care Act came into force in April of this year and the remaining parts of the Act are expected to come into force in April 2016. Clare Wills Since April 2015 the way in which local authorities carry out carer’s assessments and needs assessments, and how local authorities should determine who is eligible for support, has changed. The Act also imposes new obligations on local authorities. In April 2016 when the remaining parts of the Care Act come into effect, it is expected to change how local authorities should charge for both residential care and community care, and will introduce the ‘care cap’. From April 2015 carer’s have new rights and are entitled to a carer’s assessment where they appear to have needs. Carers are also entitled to support if they meet the eligibility criteria In addition a national eligibility criteria for both carers and the person being cared for has introduced a minimum threshold. If a carer or the person being cared for meets this threshold, they will have eligible needs. This is the first time that local authorities are required to meet carer’s eligible needs. A national eligibility criteria should make assessments for both carers and the people being cared for more uniform around the country and less like a ‘postcode lottery’. There is also a general duty on local authorities to promote an individual’s ‘wellbeing’. This means that they should always have a person’s wellbeing in mind when making decisions about them, or planning services. The wellbeing principles are also part of the eligibility criteria. Local authorities have to consider the impact of the role of a carer on
By Wills Jacobsen
a person’s wellbeing. Similarly, they have to consider the impact of a disabled person’s needs on a carer’s wellbeing. Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing in the Care Act that says a person being cared for will be charged more for either residential care or community care services from April 2015. The financial assessments for both residential care and community care are still very similar to the old situation – with the same upper capital limit of £23,350 and the same lower capital limit of £14,250. These limits are planned to change from April 2016. Regulations confirming this have not yet been published, so this may be subject to change, but it is proposed that the upper capital limit for residential care where the value of someone’s home is included, will rise from £23,250 to £118,000. The upper capital limit for residential care where the value of someone’s home is not included will rise from £23,250 to £27,000. The upper capital limit for community care will rise from £23,250 to £27,000. The lower capital limit for both residential care and community care will rise from £14,250 to £17,000. These changes mean that people who have capital and who were previously receiving some help from the local authority might receive more help, and people who have capital and who were previously self-funders, might receive help for the first time. Contact Clare Wills for advice about any of the above areas on 01487 842 789.

#Get fit and get hitched!
The two months since my last blog have gone so quickly. My weight loss however has slowed down dramatically. Sticking to my diet, menu plan and counting calories has felt like a huge effort and at times, it just hasn’t happened. I am, however, comparing this to my focus, motivation and relatively quick results from earlier in the year. I guess this is what they call hitting a plateau. It is difficult to maintain a high level of effort for long periods of time. My attitude to exercising has stayed the same since the start of my challenge. I am still totally motivated to keep active. Exercising has become a habit which I really enjoy. In fact, if I don’t do much for a couple of days I really miss it. The good feeling you get from raising your heart rate and getting a little sweaty, borders on being slightly addictive. It’s been the best change in me so far. When I think back to how lethargic I used to feel before I started making all these positive changes, it’s no wonder I often used to feel a bit down and think myself lazy. There was always an excuse not to be active. That state of mind is in the past now and is where it will firmly stay. So how do I tackle the downturn in motivation when it comes to my diet? I have obviously gained some good habits in healthy eating, but the amount I eat has slowly crept up again. Along with the little treats. I’m still losing weight, but at a much slower rate of half a pound a week. I know this is healthy but to get to where I want to be for the wedding, it’s not enough. I can feel a little prickle of panic and doubt creeping in when I think about it. I have had to look back at how I felt at the beginning of the year and remind myself it is possible, I just have to believe in myself and want to do it. Making a conscious choice to be focussed is going to be my strategy. Wedding dress shopping was something I felt really anxious about. A shopping trip with my mam and that all changed. Wedding dress shopping is fun, exciting and tiring! I loved it. I tried on lots of different dresses and decided www.myfriendmagazine.co.uk
on what style I liked. I just had to find the perfect one. At the beginning of May it felt like I had loads of time to find ‘The One’, and get a bit nearer to my goal. Unfortunately (for Lee) wedding dresses became my obsession. I didn’t realise how important the dress would be to me, and far too much of my time was spent looking at dresses online and watching wedding dress TV shows! A chance discovery of a back garden wedding dress boutique in Potton - Sara French Bridal helped me with my ‘problem’. I found my fabulous dress and now I don’t have to obsess any more (about the dress anyway). So here I am, only 5 months until the big day. There is a list starting to grow of all the things that need to be done. Top of the list is getting fit and having quality time with my family. The favourite part of my new active lifestyle, is walking the dog with my boys. It’s the part of the day I enjoy most – where I appreciate what I have and realise how lucky I am. A healthy and happy family. What could be better?

Summer Reads
Leisure
Lose yourself in a book this holiday! This gritty offering from Neil Smith about Oliver Boo Dalrymple will have you sat bolt upright. 13 year old Boo realises he is in heaven and learns the harsh truth about his journey getting there. Gulp. He writes this to his parents and gradually finds himself dealing with the painful truth, detailing the steps that lead him to face the reasons why. A heart-breaking page turner that desires to bring solace and rest to this unsettling tale.
It has been a number one bestseller for a long time. It is a great book club choice because there is so much to psychoanalyze. The plot unravels mainly in a haze of hangovers from alcoholic Rachel who imagines the life of a couple viewed from the window from her daily commute. Rachel, weighed down by her own baggage, views their relationship as idyllic in comparison to an ex-husband she cannot forget, pained by his new wife and baby. On the flip side, new wife Anna regards Rachel with much suspicion. As events unravel, Rachel finds herself involved in the lives of the couple viewed from the train and all is not what it seemed. You are left questioning this notion of perfect happiness, how the reality of another’s life can differ and how small the word can be. Terrifying and great for the commute, just don’t look too closely into other peoples gardens or windows.
At first glance this could be mistaken for a book to aid modern parenting. On closer inspection, it is a story adventure for children 7 and above. Although unofficial Minecraft merchandise, anything with Minecraft seems to sell and sometimes it is refreshing that it is book form. Here they can read about a 12 year old zombie and discover what life is really like for them. Mmm? Perhaps parents should give it a try too . . .
Forget the fad bikini diets - opt for the expert knowledge of nutritionist Amelia Freer who admits herself she was addicted to sugar. This has become a firm favourite in our house, and on the list of bestselling health/ lifestyle titles. In pure and simple terms it will revolutionise the way you feed yourself and your family. Its pages are filled with how you approach food and exercise, not filled with complicated recipes. It is more like a mantra for overall well-being. Her advice will bring quick and easy changes that will waken your taste buds and have you enjoying real food without the nasties.
This is just one example of many colouring books Elizabeth James has created in her series. Not just for kids, this book allows you to dabble in a bit of colour therapy. If words are too much during your summer break, then this is a book to pack in your suitcase. Filled with beautiful Indian designs, it will have you blending your yellow ochres with your burnt umber’s whilst the kids splash in the pool or you switch your phone to silent. www.myfriendmagazine.co.uk

The Road to Renewal Challenge 2015 a year of
Reinvigorating Trust
Take the first step! Imagine the excitement of a new start: a past that throws no shadows; the possibility of a different future from the one that you feared. The first step is to clarify what are your priorities and goals – and, importantly, to know why they are driving your life’s decisions. Our 2020 Vision: The Road to Renewal is a focus on positive change that transforms our communities to mend “broken Britain”.
Dr Chan Abraham Group Chief Executive
48
Since March 2000 we have been building a team of people who, daily inspired in their work, seek consistently to give excellent service to our customers. This energises our residents, business partners and the wider community and helps us all find a sense of purpose, hope and fulfilment. As we change, transformation occurs and a brighter future becomes reality.
