45 What exactly is good PR and how does it work?

Dear All,

Spring is here! Just. The evenings are getting lighter and not quite so many woollies are required when stepping outside! But before the garden requires your total concentration take a moment, make a cup of something hot and spend some time with My Friend magazine - there’s lots inside! We’ve got some fab bits in our shopping feature inspired by 2015 colour trends - as always we support all those great local businesses out there: show your support - please where possible shop local! Regular features a-plenty from the likes of ‘The Gardener’, Head Chef of the George in Buckden El Akil Benasissa, Danielle’s fitness blog, Secret Diner and legal advice from Will Jacobsen in ‘Law Matters’. Check out our competition - a meal for two at The Brampton Mill and we have lots about health and beauty and the home and garden too! We would like to welcome all the new businesses who have joined us so far this year and thank everyone involved in this issue; we value all those businesses who give their co-operation in our ‘shop local’ feature and hope 2015 is a good year for you all! To all our readers, wishing you much enjoyment in the garden and local shopping over the coming weeks. Bye for now!

Driveway and patio cleaning and sealing Driveway cleaning is one of those industries in the UK that attract a ‘Rogue Trader’ element - with a plethora of door knocking ‘contractors’ offering to clean your driveway for ‘a price’. If you want the job doing properly, it is important that you employ a professional, established company who will have the correct equipment and knowledge to complete the job to a high standard. A company who will stand by the quality of their work and guarantee your satisfaction before expecting payment. The Trading Standards Buy With Confidence Scheme is a great starting point as all contractors registered have been thoroughly vetted and approved by the trading standards office as reputable and trustworthy. Blackjack Surface Technology has been established in Hartford and Godmanchester for more than three years now and has built a successful paving cleaning business based on quality as well as affordability, with many

satisfied customers throughout Cambridgeshire and beyond. We offer free on site surveys and no obligation quotes and are confident that you will be delighted with any work we carry out on your behalf.

‘Buy With Confidence’ gives peace of mind

Whatever you are looking to buy, there can be an issue of trust when buying goods or services because of the stories we hear about rogue traders. However, there are lots of good businesses out there; it’s the few bad ones that can make buying a nerve racking experience. The ‘Buy With Confidence’ Trading Standards Approved business scheme offers a range of businesses that have been checked by Cambridgeshire County Council’s Trading Standards team, to give you peace of mind. The scheme is open to everyone to use and is completely free. You can find an approved business by visiting www.buywithconfidence. gov.uk. If you don’t have internet access you can visit your local library where staff will be able to look up traders on your behalf. Alternatively, you can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040 506 where advisors can look the information up for you. Unlike some other schemes, we make sure the checking process is rigorous. A Trading Standards Officer visits each business and carries out a comprehensive audit.

Once approved, Trading Standards provide each business with access to free business advice and continue to monitor their conduct through feedback customers leave and re-auditing periodically. Should a dispute arise between an approved business and their customer, either side can seek advice and assistance to resolve the matter from Trading Standards. So if you are looking for a reliable local business from home improvements to car repairs, why not make Buy With Confidence your first port of call? Remember, whenever you are buying goods or services it is always advisable to get at least three written quotes. Quotes should give adequate detail about the goods or service to be supplied, so you are clear about what you are agreeing to and that the price quoted is reasonable. If you need help you can contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040 506 for further assistance.

Legal

Law Matters

By Wills Jacobsen

Cohabitants or couples ‘living together’ often believe they have legal protection or that they will be reasonable when dividing their assets, if their relationship breaks down.

Recently, I was instructed Eleanor by a lady, let’s call her Kate, Jacobsen in her fifties who had been cohabiting for 15 years with her partner, let’s call him Will, in a house solely owned by Will. Kate was made redundant about 5 years ago. The house Will and Kate shared needed refurbishment and together Will and Kate decided that an extension would also be nice. Kate used all her redundancy money of £30,000 to pay for the extension and refurbishment. Will and Kate’s relationship sadly ended last year. Will told Kate to leave the house and changed the locks. Kate had no savings left but got a job although at a much lower rate than prior to her redundancy. Kate was distressed, had to find somewhere to rent, and had very little money to pay her bills with. Kate had paid cash to the builder when the house she shared with Will was refurbished. As a result she had very little evidence of the refurbishment work in the form of receipts. In addition, there was very little evidence in her bank accounts. Will denied that Kate had ever spent any money on the house.

individuals. There is no structure in place to determine a fair outcome when couples separate, and no legal aid for this type of claim. Did you know? • In 2012 there were 5.9 million people cohabiting in the UK. Between 1998 and 2012 the number of cohabiting couples doubled. This makes cohabitation the fastest growing family type in the UK •

The biggest percentage increase in cohabiting types is among the over 65s

• Although there is no such thing as common law marriage 58% of respondents to a Labour Force Survey thought that living together for some time resulted in a common law marriage giving them the same rights as married couples. •

In July 2013 a poll showed that 7 in 10 people hold a mistaken belief in common law marriage

Kate could make a claim in respect of Will’s house. However, in order to succeed she has to prove an agreement with Will, or prove her financial contributions to the value of the property. However, Kate does not have the funds for litigation (these claims cost approximately £5,000 to £10,000 and faces having to pay Will’s legal fees if she loses (about the same sum). She doesn’t have airtight evidence of her contribution to the value of the house.

There is something which cohabitants can do to protect themselves from the position that Kate finds herself in, and that is to enter into a cohabitation agreement to set out what should happen when cohabitation ends.

The sad reality is that the English legal system treats couples living together as two unrelated

Contact Eleanor Jacobsen for advice about any of the above areas on 01487 842 789.

Wills Jacobsen offer fixed fee Cohabitation Agreements to protect investment into property, and other assets, on the breakdown of your relationship.

Tracy started Four Seasons Beauty in Godmanchester four years ago and the business has thrived in that time! She offers a wide range of professional beauty treatments in a calming environment. The business and the Tracy beauty room itself has Stratton undergone a fab new makeover recently. Tracy has taken time out between appointments to answer some key beauty questions. Q: My skin is feeling very dry this time of year, which products would you recommend to help combat this? A: With the cold harsh weather and the wonders of central heating this is a common problem that many people suffer with this time of year. I use Eve Taylor skin care products in all my facials at the beauty room. They offer a wide range of products, which enable me to tailor a facial to your specific skin concerns and requirements. I would recommend their Ultra Rich Advanced Moisturiser which has a unique moisture lock system. This ensures maximum hydration and improved barrier support against environmental elements and free radical damage. To provide you with a proper skin analysis please contact me. Facials start from only £20. Q: My nail polish always chips and comes off quickly when I apply it how can I make last longer? A: At the beauty room I always use a base coat, two coats of desired polish and a top coat to all of my manicures and pedicures. The base coat protects the natural nail underneath and the top coat protects the nail polish applied. You could also try a gel manicure. I offer OPI Gelcolor - it is applied in the same way as a normal polish, cured under an LED light and leaves you with immediately dry, hard wearing, glossy nails which look fantastic and lasts for weeks. Q: I’m thinking of getting my eyelashes tinted, I’ve never had them dyed before and I’m very fair. What would you recommend? A: An eyelash tint is a good idea if you’re very fair. It can give you the look of make-up without your having to do a thing. You could also invest in some eyelash curlers as curling your newly dark lashes will add to the whole effect. The other option is Eyelash Extensions which provide you with

Health & Beauty longer, thicker, darker looking lashes. Lash Perfect individual eyelash extensions are available in a variety of curls, lengths and thicknesses and are tailored to your specific requirements. When applied they are lightweight and feel just like your own. Q: Every morning, my face is puffy around my eyes, and people are always telling me I look tired. I use eye cream, but it doesn’t help? A: Most of us suffer from hydric retention around the eyes after a night’s sleep. It’s the lymphatic system that causes these problems: it clears toxins from the body but can be sluggish after sleep, especially if you’re tired. It improves as the day goes on, as gravity drains away fluids accumulated during the night. Causes can include dehydration, drinking alcohol or salty or spicy foods before going to bed, or hormonal changes. To help prevent puffiness, drink plenty of water, never go to bed wearing eye make-up, and try to get 6 – 8 hours sleep per night. The skin is very delicate around the eye area and a specific eye cream should always be used. An amount about the size of a pea applied to both eyes, morning and night should be enough. Apply in small circular motions with your ring finger and then tap gently around the eye socket, never too close to the eye and never rub vigorously. This will help to drain the fluid away. I recommend Eve Taylor Advanced Eye Complex as I use it myself and it has helped reduce the puffiness and dark circles too!

Health & Beauty Last year, local businesswomen Jess Swift and Lisa Drummond launched SHR MediSpa Ltd, an aesthetics therapy clinic offering the latest painfree and permanent hair removal treatment using Intense Pulsed Light. The clinic also offers skin rejuvenation therapy and treatment for certain skin conditions. SHR, which stands for Super Hair Removal, is a huge step forward from traditional light or laser hair removal therapies. It uses a revolutionary new Intense Pulsed Light process, in which a rapid series of microbursts of energy build up slowly at a low energy level. A course of six treatments over a number of weeks is enough to guarantee permanent hair removal in the area treated. At last, a fuss-free, permanent solution to unwanted hair! SHR is less expensive than traditional laser hair removal, is faster and is virtually pain-free. Due to its modern technology, SHR is effective on various hair colours and also skin colours. As a permanent solution, it is an attractive alternative to waxing, shaving or electrolysis, and it is revolutionising the hair removal market. It can also be used to treat skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation, rosacea and thread veins. It can even reduce visible wrinkles, due to its collagen-boosting effects. #Get fit and get hitched!

My journey to getting fit and losing weight for my wedding began last November, with a moderately enthusiastic start. It was difficult to maintain motivation to exercise and with the thought of the busy, food filled Christmas season impending, sticking to a low calorie, healthy diet was a real challenge. It usually is a stressful time for a mum and partner. As usual most of the organising, planning and doing of all-things-Christmasy fell to me. I therefore decided to enjoy Christmas as I generally would but just try to eat smaller portions. The children and I walked everyday with the dog, but I put on a few pounds. I felt bad. I was desperate for it to be the 1st of January, so I could say “I’m getting married this year!” and start getting really excited and feel more positive about the challenge ahead. New Years Day arrived and I woke feeling different. Something happened in my head that made me feel like I could accomplish my challenge and do it easily. We had a lovely family stroll - a long, fresh walk down by the river, with the boys and my parents, followed by homemade ham broth, wholemeal bread and a fun game of Mousetrap. In the evening, Lee and I spent some quality time together making our action plan. We discussed nutrition and put together a family menu plan which would be easy to stick to and shop for. I also started logging everything I ate using the My Fitness Pal app on my phone. It’s an excellent tool to help me stay on track and evaluate my eating habits. The first week following this reduced calorie diet proved really hard. I thought about food all the time. I just wanted to eat anything high in calories and in large quantities - especially when the children came in from school tired and grumpy and needing all my attention. I didn’t though. I had small treats and stuck to my daily calorie allowance. I was amazed at myself and how strong and focussed I was being with my food. I was also weighing myself every couple of days. Apparently

you shouldn’t but it did help me, as I was seeing results. I lost the pounds I put on over Christmas and a couple extra in the first week. In the past I would have given myself a large food treat for doing so well. I felt the buzz of success and the second week was easier. I increased the pace when walking with the dog and went a bit further too, then trained with Lee once a week. He’s so patient with me

and really encourages me when I not putting in the effort he knows I’m capable of. I still don’t like him telling me what to do, but I feel energized after each session. At the beginning of the third week into my successful dieting, I suggested to a lovely friend of mine that we try out the Zumba class in Godmanchester on a Friday morning. We went to a session and I absolutely loved it. It was great fun and our faces were truly glowing afterwards. We booked in for the next week straight away. We’re into February now and my motivation is still there. I’m sticking to the diet, I’m exercising ‘energetically’ three times a weeks and I feel positive. I’ve lost a massive 14lbs since the start of my challenge. The next target is to continue with the food diary and make exercise a part of my regular routine ready for wedding dress shopping in April. Books Text

Impossible Tales

by Dan Worsley

This is a book of eight short stories aimed at seven to twelve year olds. The writer is an ex-teacher and he has used his experience to really tailor the stories to appeal to young children. The book is fun and include tales about a rampant pair of false teeth, a school boy with a “wind” problem and a rather poignant tale of a pair of special football boots (my favourite). The false teeth story is highly amusing tale of how a boy ended suffering from “chomperhobia” after a traumatic visit to his grandmother’s farm. “Booted out” is a football story that most boys will be able to identify with, especially those who have been overlooked when the school team was picked! And what would you give for a can of disappearing spray as told in “Don’t Believe Your Eyes”? These stories will appeal to boys especially and can be read by the child themselves or read aloud as great bedtime stories. The author is an experienced teacher but has changed career and is now using his skills as a children’s author and professional story teller working with schools and libraries to encourage reading and writing. The book is self published and currently available from Amazon for about a fiver. Highly recommended. Buy it and laugh out loud! Bookworm

Books

Everyone wants to write a book!

At the Huntingdon Writers Group we encourage each other in our writing, whatever our individual interest or standard of writing, and have a great deal of fun in the process. Have you ever thought about writing something? I don’t mean just any old thing, but writing something worthwhile. Perhaps you have been meaning to write a novel. Maybe you are a poet but have not let anyone know about it. It’s possible you know someone whose life is worth writing about. Or you might be able to teach other people about a skill or hobby through writing a non-fiction book. It may just be a few sentences or a few words. A good story or poem paints a picture of what you see, hear or feel. If it touches a chord of empathy with one person it will be memorable. And the best thing is; it takes no more than a burst of creativity and encouragement. Huntingdon Writers Group has been in existence since 1985 and comprises a number of like-minded people who enjoy writing and who have a great deal of fun creating their work. We have a wide age range from 18 to . . . well; let’s just say the more mature element of our community! The standard of writing within the Group varies from the complete novice to those who have had works

published; but you don’t have to be a J.K.Rowling or Stephen King to become a member – just have an interest in creating something in your own style. Our meetings are informal, following a program which offers members the opportunity to stretch their abilities by addressing different forms of writing. We exchange ideas and read our work aloud, developing confidence and inviting constructive support. Whilst we do not teach writing at the Group meetings, we do run “in-house” competitions (with cash prizes) and writing exercises, so over time you may well pick up hints and tips from other members or from our occasional guest speakers – and you will learn from your own experience. As a group we encourage each other in our writing, whatever our individual interests or standards, and have a great deal of fun in the process. There is a full calendar of events including in-house competitions, ‘on the spot’ writing exercises, occasional workshops, guest speakers and the very popular ‘read and comment’ sessions. What exactly is good PR and how does it work?

by Danni Smith: Get Yourself Talked About

interestingly, reveals that most people who suffer an injury due to doctor negligence don’t sue. Can you believe that? It turns out the patients that sue are the ones that felt rushed, ignored, or otherwise poorly treated by their physician. In other words, never, ever make your customers feel like they don’t count. PR is also about telling a story (after all, that’s what humans connect to). Take the Christmas Ads from last year. Sainsbury’s. Waitrose. John Lewis. All of them tell a story. The John Lewis Ad was all about the little boy finding a playmate for Monty, his penguin. Followed by the slogan: “Give someone the Christmas they’ve been dreaming of.” Which was clever PR because now every time you think about shopping in John Lewis you associate it with that lovely, feel good feeling of that little boy and his gorgeous little penguin. copyright John Lewis

TONY BLAIR has a lot to answer for. And I’m not talking about politics here (I wouldn’t dare). I’m talking about what he’s done for the world of PR. ith Thanks to Tony Blair, PR Danni Sm is often associated with ‘spin’ – which by its very definition is all about shining the light on all the positive aspects of something and glossing over the less positive aspects. Which doesn’t really represent the whole picture does it? As a former Journalist, and TV Producer, my early media career was all about getting to the truth. So if anyone ever mentions ‘spin’ around me, I can physically feel myself cringe. I don’t do spin. Because, apart from the fact I still count myself as a Journalist, spin doesn’t work. We’re British for a start. Which means we’ve all grown up with a healthy amount of cynicism. So it doesn’t matter what someone tries to tell us. If something’s amiss we can smell it a mile away. And if you’re having to gloss over things because they’re not quite working you’re kind of missing the point, right? Better to deal with the problem and get rid of it rather than paper over the cracks. Good PR is all about raising your profile. So that when someone needs the service or product you offer, they think of you. It’s also about the feeling they associate with your brand. Is it always a pleasure to do business, or is it more hassle than it’s worth? And in business, everything counts. Right from the product itself down to customer service, sales, and after-care. And don’t forget the after-care whatever you do - because how you make your customers feel can make or break you. Something that’s only emphasised in Malcolm Gladwell’s book BLINK which, rather

Good PR, clever PR, is all about raising profile; finding the story; getting customers to connect ‘emotionally’ to you and your brand. And it’s about being honest. Definitely not about spin.

The Road to Renewal Challenge 2015 a year of

Reinvigorating Trust

Take the first step! Imagine the excitement of a new start: a past that throws no shadows; the possibility of a different future from the one that you feared. The first step is to clarify what are your priorities and goals – and, importantly, to know why they are driving your life’s decisions.

Our 2020 Vision: The Road to Renewal is a focus on positive change that transforms our communities to mend “broken Britain”.

Dr Chan Abraham Group Chief Executive

Since March 2000 we have been building a team of people who, daily inspired in their work, seek consistently to give excellent service to our customers. This energises our residents, business partners and the wider community and helps us all find a sense of purpose, hope and fulfilment. As we change, transformation occurs and a brighter future becomes reality.
