HELLO! I am an artist. I am a student of life. I am a Nairobian with Coastal roots. I am not afraid to try and fail. I am a perfectionist. I am addicted to coffee. I am a lover of good music. I am always changing. I am Michael Ngigi Kiruthi and I am a designer.

I do what I do because I love it. My passion lies in finding beauty in the mundane, creating original pieces in the midst of copies. Though I create and design out of pure passion and enjoyment, I do take it quite seriously. I am not only determined to build aesthetically pleasing projects but also practical and functional designs. Just like in architecture, aesthetics serve no purpose if not built on the foundation of function and usability. If something does not serve its purpose, whether to solve a problem or turn a frown upside-down, then its beauty is useless. I endeavor to present works and undertake jobs that are founded on this principal. Please feel free to peruse through my portfolio and have a glimpse of what I have been experimenting with. ANGSTROM

As a start-up, you really need to stand out from the crowd. Angstrom challenged me to conceptualize a logo that stood for their ideals but still stood out from the myriad of design company logos out there. The logo had to show movement, strength, innovation and attention to detail; values at the core of the company. Using the Egyptian pyramids as inspiration, I made a logo that comprised of other smaller triangles within. More so, since an Ă…ngstrĂśm is the smallest unit of measurement, I added some really fine grain to radiate the feeling of minutiae.

DECOR & BEYOND The challenge was to come up with a new fresh and minimalist approach to Decor & Beyond, an interior design company. Choosing their initials as a starting point and decided to put the ampersand within the space where the ‘D’ and ‘B’ met, an ode to the meaning of interior. The custom florid acts as an underline for the company name.

ILI-ACLE BROCHURE

The International Law Institute: African Centre for Legal Excellence were in need of a brochure for the year 2015/2016 targeted at Mid- to senior level professionals, including lawyers, judges, finance officers, procurement officials and other public and private sector African professionals engaged in commercial and social development. It had to be Highly classy, globally competitive, but with a strong local/regional grounding. Since ACLE is located in Uganda, I used yellow as the main colour, with light gray as a secondary colour that toned it down. Thin rounded fonts were used for the Headings to give them a softer humanist feel, while still retaining a regal feel.

TAFARIA CASTLE Tafaria Castle is a 29-room lodge built on a hill overlooking the Aberdare Range, Laikipia Plains and Mount Kenya, halfway between Nyeri and Nyahururu in Kenya. Tafaria has been conceived to engender two states of mind, that of adventure stimulated by the remote location and medieval architectural style that runs from the castle to the similarly themed cottages. The Tafaria Castle seeks to provide luxury accommodation to Kenyans while presenting itself as an affordable local tourist destination. I have embarked on numerous design projects of varying complexity with Tafaria ranging from brochures, fliers, TV commercials, Online motion graphics among others. We recently embarked on a brand repositioning, thereby introducing four new sub-brands; TeamOut, goFit, Nuptials & the cHub.

SAUTI SOL

Funky and urban was the core of the project which was initiated at around the time of the “Nishike” craze. T-shirts, hoodies and jumpers were designed with the “Nishike” tag-line and images of the group members from the video acting as the preliminary branding. In tandem with other designers, “Nishike” apparel was created mainly targeting the 16 to 35 year demographic. It consisted of T-shirts, jumpers, hoodies and crop tops. These designs were to capitalize on the “Nishike” craze but were intended go further than that to incorporate Sauti Sol as a brand and act as a precursor to the new album. Sadly, this did not materialize as Sauti Sol had interests elswhere at the time.

BHOW APP B.H.O.W: Barley, Hops, Oats and Water was part of a one week challenge to come up with an app UI targeted at alcohol consumers. The app had a number of envisioned functionalities such as tracking your movement to help you remember where you were during the night. You could get drink recommendations based on your drinking history, location or budget. The UI embraced flat design, with difference in hue used to mark interactive elements. .

MOTION GRAPHICS Motion graphics and motion design are both areas that I have a great interest and passion in. Adding motion to design elements adds a fourth dimension and can make any design visually stimulating since it engages more than one sense. It engages the mind and enables design to emote.
