ELIZABETH FEENEY Senior Designer Elizabeth is a graphic designer by trade. Born and raised living the daily grind on the East coast, she currently lives in New York City, and it still remains one of her all-time favorite cities. Elizabeth specializes in print layout, yet she has expanded her mediums in design to the web and beyond; travel is her greatest inspiration, as she loves to explore new worlds, ideas and considers every day an opportunity to learn something new and often, exciting! If she isn’t planning a theme party, in her spare time you can find Elizabeth crafting DIY projects with friends, baking something sweet, or cooking up a storm.

VANESSA TIERNEY Photographer Vanessa is an internationally published lifestyle photographer who specializes in editorial and wedding photography. Dividing her time between Los Angeles and New York City, Vanessa has found the best of both worlds in combining the New York hustle and the sunny SoCal. ELIZABETH PALMER STARNES Recipe Features Editor Elizabeth is a graduate of Hamilton College and The French Culinary Institute in New York City, as well as an avid world traveler, cocktail mixer, cookbook collector, and dinner party hostess. She loves developing healthy and feel-good versions of classic culinary favorites and spends her time working as a food writer and culinary instructor in the Bay Area. You’ll always find her kitchen stocked with good champagne, Cowgirl Creamery cheese, and green juice (it’s all about balance!). Originally from the East Coast, she now lives in San Francisco, California with her fiancé and Cavalier King Charles pup, Ellie.

JODEE DEBES Photographer Jodee is a passionate wedding and editorial photographer with a love for travel and telling stories. You can catch her with a goofy grin on her face as she gallivants around the world capturing memories. Her goal in life is to photograph those real life moments of laughter, tears and awe; she always takes on a photojournalistic approach with her images no matter what she’s shooting. Originally from Austin, TX, she now lives in Santa Monica, CA but still proudly uses “y’all” in conversation.


EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to My Magazine, the entertaining issue for summer 2015. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a desire to connect extraordinary women through their passions and to build a foundation that organically brings these women together. After the launch of Greenhorn Club in 2012, I learned that no matter what kind of friends I made, the passions they had, or the city in which they lived, we all had one thing in common - we love a good party. The delicious food, the lively cocktails, deciding what to wear, capturing those perfect Instagram-able moments, a party always seemed to be that common ground we all could relate to - it is, itself, a reason to celebrate. Honoring a particular achievement, toasting to that new-found strength after making it through a difficult time, or simply celebrating the start of a weekend or season -- we all know how to enjoy a party. Shortly after moving from New York City to San Francisco for a new job, I met one of my friends Elizabeth Palmer Starnes. We quickly connected over our love for healthy cooking, baking and all things entertaining. One evening, we decided to have dinner at our favorite vegan Mexican spot, Gracias Madre. Elizabeth shared with me her blog ElizabethPalmerKitchen.com, and I shared some of my passion projects, including the recent launch of MollyMy.com; we chatted goals, dreams and plans for the future. One of the aspirations I mentioned was to someday create a lifestyle magazine -- in that moment, Elizabeth and I looked at each other and knew exactly what that first issue should cover and how we could support one another in turning it into a reality. If you would have told me one year ago that I’d be launching my first online magazine right now, I wouldn’t have believed it. The simple relief that I had Elizabeth as a resource, her recipes and insights as contributions, and her equal enthusiasm for my passion was the support I needed to chase a dream. Elizabeth assured me that it wasn’t unrealistic, that it was possible -- not down the road, but right now. We both brought different things to the table that encouraged each other to try something new and that encouragement, inspiration and support is what friendship is all about. And that, in my opinion, is exactly where passion stems from. One of the greatest things I’ve learned through this journey is that you don’t have to do it all on your own, in fact, you really can’t, nor should you. Embrace your passions, connect with likeminded people and chase what fuels you. My Magazine is about discovering your strengths, finding your passions and what inspires you by empowering readers and contributors alike to stand out and share those things that are uniquely you. To put it simply, My Magazine is a collection of favorite people, places and things that invites you into the ever-evolving experience of learning about yourself and those around you. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I enjoyed creating it for you, and that it inspires a little summer gathering of your own! Summer is as good a time as any to be with the people you love, celebrating life, passion and togetherness by sharing memories and experiences. Thank you to all the incredible contributors and friends who collaborated with me on this project that is so close to my heart -- it’s safe to say, I truly could not have done it without you; your continued support throughout this endeavor has meant the world, here’s to many more! WHAT TO HAVE ON HAND Parties should be spent enjoying the company of your guests -- after all, that is the purpose of a gathering! Instead of frantically running around trying to tie up loose ends up until the last minute (or in some cases, during the entire event) it’s helpful to stock your place with the necessities, that way, you’re hostess-ready at the drop of a hat. Here are some recommended items to keep on hand for any gal who enjoys entertaining at home. Serving tray and/or cutting board Set of glassware such as Duralex Picardie juice glasses, you can really use them for anything - from wine to coffee! Cocktail napkins Appetizer utensils, including a cheese knife Set of dinner and cocktail plates - for paper products, I love Cheeky! Set of serving bowls Cocktail shaker and strainer Paper straws, every party needs ‘em! Ice bucket and tongs Tea candles and candleholders

It’s fun to entertain, but keeping a busy schedule can make it nearly impossible sometimes! Here are a few suggestions of items to stock your kitchen with and how to use them; best part is that you can enjoy these necessities solo, with your significant other, or with friends, so you really don’t have anything to lose.

Fresh fruit and veggies Mixed nuts Wine Sparkling water Cheese Crackers Gourmet bread Pasta Ice cream Pre-packaged dips

Fresh fruit & veggies: Including citrus, such as lemons, limes, and oranges for extra flavor and/or drink garnish. For a simple appetizer solution, pair fresh veggies with pre-packed dips such as hummus or your favorite salad dressing. Mixed nuts: Salted or unsalted mixed nuts are great options; almonds are having a major moment, so even just those alone will do. Wine (red or white): It’s easy to store and good to have on hand for unexpected guests, or just a long day (take a peek at some favorites under $100 on page 122). Sparkling water: Add ice and garnish with whatever citrus fruits you have on hand, we’re pretty sure San Pellegrino can dress up any gathering! Cheese & crackers: This is a classic everyone can appreciate, and it’s a quick fix when you need to serve up a crowd pleasing appetizer with minimal time. Keep a couple cheese and cracker options on hand so you can offer a variety to guests. For those who might be gluten-free, we love Glutino and Mary’s Gone Crackers (they also make yummy cookies) -- they really are delicious, gluten intolerant or not.

Gourmet bread: Great for whipping up gourmet grilled cheese; throw in some sliced fruit or jam, drizzle with truffle oil and pair with a short-cut salad made up of pre-packedaged, pre-washed lettuce. Toss greens in a bowl with fresh lemon, olive oil, sea salt and cracked pepper, nuts, dried or fresh fruit, cheese and/or chopped deli meats. Tada! Find Elizabeth’s dinner party-worthy gourmet grilled cheese recipe on the next page. Pasta: You can even opt for brown rice or quinoa pasta for a healthier option! Add the basics such as sautéed garlic, olive oil, red pepper flakes and some sprigs of Italian flat leaf parsley and/or basil. Try Elizabeth’s simple pasta recipe on the next page. Ice cream: Stock up on something basic like vanilla (for a healthier choice, we love So Delicious dairy-free options) and top with fresh berries, drizzle with honey, mixed nuts, and a square of dark chocolate; to dress this up a bit, serve in a martini glass. Pre-packed dips: One the of easiest ways to pull together an appetizer when you need it most; put pre-packed dips into small serving bowls (only leave them in the package they came in if you really have no other way to serve them) and pair with crackers, veggies, pretzels, etc. of your choice.

15 MINUTE meals for the gal on the go

simplest spaghetti with

GARLIC, FRESH HERBS, & RED PEPPER FLAKES Ingredients • 1 pound dried spaghetti (substitute whole wheat or quinoa pasta if you like) • 1/2 cup good quality extra-virgin olive oil • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped • 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes, to taste • ½ cup chopped fresh herbs (try a mix of basil, parsley, mint, or whatever you have on hand)

How To

Cook your pasta per package instructions, and reserve ¼ cup of the pasta cooking water before you drain it. In a large sauté pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic, and sauté carefully for 1 minute, making sure not to burn it. Add the pasta to the pan with the garlic and oil, and toss everything to combine. Add a few shakes of red pepper flakes, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss in a few tablespoons of pasta water, as needed, to loosen the sauce and coat the pasta. To serve, garnish with your fresh chopped herbs, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, and enjoy! Serves 4 | Total Time: 15 minutes

GRILLED CHEESE

Ingredients • • • • • •

1 tablespoon olive oil 2 slices sprouted grain bread (thawed if frozen) ¼ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon fig or raspberry jam 1 small handful arugula Fresh cracked black pepper

How To

In a skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Toast the bread on both sides, about 1 minute on each side. On one slice of bread, spread the shredded cheese in an even layer. On the other slice of bread, spread the jam. Top the cheese with the arugula, and a few cracks of black pepper. Top that slice with the other piece of bread, jam side down, and press down slightly with a spatula. Cook for 1 minute more on each side, until the cheese has melted, and the bread is toasty and golden brown. Slice in half, and enjoy! Makes 1 sandwich (easily doubled) | Total Time: 10 minutes

Tips for Being the

perfect hostess:

Introduce your guests to each other. If they’ve already met, help spark conversations -- connect the dots by sharing a story you know each other can relate to and point out their commonalities to keep conversations flowing effortlessly; the last thing you want is for a guest to feel out of place or left out. Set out a pitcher or two of water and some glasses. It might seem silly, but water tends to be one of those things people are constantly looking for at a gathering (even amongst a line-up of cocktails!) and having access to pour their own glass whenever they’d like instantly makes for a welcoming environment. You’ll be busy enough already as the host, so this will also keep you from running to the kitchen countless times to refill glasses. Remember the basics. Greet your guests when they arrive, give them a quick tour of your home, or the space if they haven’t been yet (pointing out the little things, like the restroom, where to find drinks, etc.), walk them to the door when they leave, make sure everyone has a safe ride home, and thank them for coming. If you can, it’s always nice to send a guest home with a little something, such as homemade cookies, or a mini goodie bag of something thoughtful as a kind gesture -- it won’t go unnoticed.

HOW TO GET INVITED HELP THE HOST

Help bring food to the table, refresh pitchers of water, and offer to help clean up or do the dishes. It’s no doubt that those acts of kindness will mean a ton to any host; they might not take you up on your offer to help (some hosts really do like to do everything on their own) and that’s okay but asking is always a nice gesture.

KNOW WHEN TO GO

When guests start trickling out and the hostess keeps yawning, it may be time to say goodnight. It’s better to leave on a high note than to overstay your welcome.

FOLLOW UP

Write a thank you note. It’s a great habit to get into -- but if you really don’t have the time to do it within the next week or so, send a nice email, text or follow up with a quick call to thank the host for a wonderful experience (yes, even if you didn’t have the most splendid of times). Recall something memorable and, let the host know why you appreciated the invite.

BRING A GIFT

We all want to be appreciated, and a gift is one way to show someone that you care. It doesn’t need to be anything grand, but a little something is always a great way to start off on the right foot as a guest.

The pressure of preparing a meal from scratch can be one of the most overwhelming aspects when it comes to hosting friends or family. Though a homemade meal is always a treat, rest assured, you don’t have to be Betty Crocker to be flawless host. Dressing up takeout or prepared foods is a quick and easy fix whether you’re in a crunch for time, or just aren’t a fan of the kitchen, period. Here are some helpful tips that will surely take your takeout up a notch. Photography by Vanessa Tierney

Present it well. Skip the basics and pull out the good stuff -- special serving utensils and china dishware will go a long way to make the most basic meals all your own. Go treasure hunting at a local flea market and find some extraordinary pieces that won’t break the bank. Serve champagne. Nothing says celebrate quite like a bottle of bubbly. It sparkles, it fizzes, and the glasses just beg you to cheers. Incorporate flowers. Trader Joe’s is always an accessible way to buy fresh, inexpensive flowers. You can also refresh an existing bouquet bought earlier in the week with a handy, dandy trim & toss -- trim the bottoms of the stems and toss old leaves and petals. Good as new! Set the stage. Set the table with a linen and cloth napkins -- elevating your table setting will, in turn, elevate the entire meal. Disguise it. Source one main takeout entree (i.e. rotisserie chicken or lasagna), surround it with simple sides made from scratch (i.e. baked potato) and toss together a homemade, fresh salad or steamed greens; no one will be able to tell or taste the difference.

IN THE KITCHEN Top Foodie Must-Haves Le Creuset Cast Iron Cookware These pots last forever! I use my big red 9 quart signature round Dutch oven for everything in the kitchen, from roasting chicken, to making risotto, soups, steaming dumplings, searing salmon, even baking massive chicken pot pies. It never lets you down and fills every culinary task with ease. It’s endlessly durable (I’ve dropped mine on the floor on several occasions), conducts heat evenly and holds temperature beautifully. Pick which size makes sense for you, but know that you’ll get more uses out of the bigger versions. Fantastic Chef’s Knife Whatever cutting or chopping task you’re doing in the kitchen, you’ll need a solid, super sharp knife to work with. Chef’s knives are the workhorse of your knife kit, and you should put most of your money here. The smaller and more specialized knives are useful, but if you want one fantastic knife, make it a chef’s knife. Quality really makes a difference here, and keeping your knife sharp is half the battle. Invest in the best chef’s knife you can afford (try Wusthof, Shun, or Kikuichi) and make sure to buy a sharpening stone too. You can get a good one for 50 or so dollars, and a few sharpening swipes every week will keep your investment in tip top shape. A dull knife is actually the most dangerous knife, so keep yours nice and sharp, and it will last a really long time. Powerful Mixer A really strong, powerful standing mixer will whip up masses of egg whites for meringue, make quick work of thick cake batter, knead your dough for pizza and bread, make hollandaise sauce in a flash, and turn heavy cream into whipped cream in minutes. Standing mixers allow you to walk away rather than standing tending to your batter while your arm gets tired. The KitchenAid standing mixer looks beautiful on your counter, and you’ll find yourself using it again and again. They’re an investment but they last forever (I got one for my 13th birthday and it still works like a dream). You can also leverage your KitchenAid mixer into countless other useful appliances with their wide collection of attachments. Their pasta attachment makes homemade linguine in minutes, and their juicer attachment makes freshly squeezed juice for cooking or cocktails seamlessly.

Vitamix There really is no substitute for this super-powerful blender. It leaves all other blenders in the dust, pulverizing everything from ice to egg yolks. A staple in restaurant kitchens and culinary schools, Vitamix blenders turn a plate of chunky vegetables into silky, creamy soup with no added fat or cream. They prevent even the most temperamental sauces from splitting, and will emulsify your dressings permanently. A Vitamix allows you to make your own nut butters and nut milks with ease. The blades are so fast and sharp that they obliterate the fat and oil particles and whip any salad dressing into submission. A staple for both healthy cooking and rich classic recipes, a Vitamix will last for decades and eliminate the need for numerous other appliances. Really Good Salt It seems like a simple and small ingredient, but bad salt can turn a dish from delicious to mediocre, and vice versa. Standard table salt pales in comparison to quality kosher salt, in both flavor and texture. Kosher salt has a more gritty texture that clings to food and better enhances flavors. Try to buy an organic variety without any added chemicals (often added as preservatives and anti-clumping agents) that can give your food an artificial flavor. You can also invest in some nice finishing salts to top off your cooking. Maldon sea salt is my personal favorite, but the options are limitless. Pink salt, gray salt, black salt, smoked salt, truffle salt, take your pick! All have something different to offer in your cooking.

MODERN MANNERS: Table Etiquette

From saying your please and thank yous to gifting a thoughtful hostess gift, manners should neither be forgotten nor overlooked. No matter the occasion, here are some tips for basic table etiquette to keep in mind for your next gathering. Practice perfecting these at your next dinner party and feel confident in your table etiquette. A gracious host is everything, but so is a gracious guest. Photography by Jodee Debes

Make it a habit to place the napkin on your lap as soon as your are seated. If you need to leave the table, place the napkin, unfolded, to the left of the place setting.

Posture is key! Elbows should be anchored to the ribs, down near your sides at a comfortable distance to keep them off the table; sit straight with poise.

To begin your meal, wait until everyone at the table has been served before picking up your silverware, unless invited by the host to start.

Remember, food to mouth, not mouth to food. Avoid eating with your mouth full -nobody wants to see your salmon filet mid-chew.

Never reach across the table for condiments, such as butter, sauces, salt & pepper; politely ask those sitting near you to pass the item.

Food should be kept in the center of the plate away from the flat rim and pieces cut one at a time. Additionally, avoid taking more than one bite from the same forkful, and note, fingers should not be used to push food onto the fork.

When you’re finished, place your knife and fork upwards on our plate; a soup spoon may be left in soup plate, but never in a soup cup.

If you’re indulging in a slightly messy meal, remember to wipe your mouth before drinking your beverage to keep the edge of the glass clean.

Bread should be broken into pieces before spreading butter or jam. Remember to keep utensils separated -- don’t use the same knife for butter as you do for jam.

Unless you have dietary restrictions, try to avoid refusing soup, oysters, or any food already portioned. If you’re offered a plate that isn’t to your taste, consider trying it in order to steer clear of hurt feelings -- and, of course, always compliment the cook/host!

Match vases by using a set of your choice (three or more); buy 3-4 different types of flowers in various colors. Then, group the flowers by color and remove any greenery. In one hand arrange the flowers as you’d like, wrap them loosely with a rubber band and then trim the stems so that each bloom sits just above the rim of the vase. One of the things I enjoy most about creating recipes is making the most out of vibrant seasonal ingredients, and tailoring them for celebrations. So, gather all your favorite people, pour yourself a cocktail and get cooking! The longer, warmer, sunnier days of summer lend themselves naturally to gathering and entertaining. Use all those extra hours of daylight to spend time with friends and family, and enjoy all the delicious produce summer has to offer.

GRILLED CHICKEN TACOS WITH PICO DE GALLO Ingredients • • • • •

2 chicken breasts 2 tablespoons lime juice, divided 5 cloves garlic, minced ½ jalapeno, seeded & minced 1 tomato, seeded & diced

½ red onion, diced 4 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro Salt and black pepper, to taste 4 corn tortillas Hot sauce, to serve

How To Heat a grill or grill pan over high heat. Season your chicken breasts on both sides with a pinch of salt, and sear them on the hot grill. Cook for 4-6 minutes on each side, until cooked through and slightly charred in places. Let the chicken rest while you make the pico de gallo. In a small bowl, combine the garlic, jalapeno, tomato, onion, cilantro, and 1 tablespoon lime juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and set aside. Slice your chicken breasts into strips, and toss with 1 tablespoon lime juice, and a pinch of black pepper. To serve, warm your tortillas in the oven, and top each with a few strips of grilled chicken and a spoonful of pico de gallo. Serves 4

1 cup balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon honey 2 cups cherry or grape tomatoes 2 cups mini mozzarella cheese balls (or you can cut larger mozzarella into bite size pieces) 1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn into bite size pieces Sea salt and black pepper to taste Skewers to serve

How To In a small saucepan, bring the balsamic vinegar up to a boil, and simmer for about 10-12 minutes, until its thickened and pourable. Off the heat, whisk in the teaspoon of honey, and transfer to a bowl to cool. Using your skewers, alternate the tomatoes and mozzarella, putting a bite size piece of basil between them. Season the skewers with a pinch of sea salt and black pepper, and drizzle sparingly with the balsamic glaze. Serve any additional sauce on the side. Enjoy! Makes Roughly 18 Skewers

This quick and simple appetizer is the perfect way to celebrate the gorgeous tomatoes summer has to offer. Sweet and juicy tomatoes pair perfectly with creamy and salty mozzarella cheese, and bright and peppery basil brings everything together deliciously. Make up a big batch of these for your next cocktail party, and watch them disappear!

2 cups diced watermelon ¼ cup diced red onion 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro 1 tablespoon minced jalapenos (to taste) Juice and zest of 1 lime (more to taste) Salt and pepper to taste

How To In a bowl, toss all the ingredients together to combine. Allow the flavors to develop for 30 minutes or overnight in the fridge before serving. Season to taste with more lime juice, salt, and pepper. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips and extra.

This spicy and sweet watermelon salsa is exactly what you want on a sweltering hot summer day. Hydrating, cooling, and refreshing, it’s a delicious snack with chips, or the perfect accompaniment to grilled fish or shrimp. You can even serve it as a revamped gazpacho, topped with some sliced avocado for a light summer meal.

How To Set the chips out on a serving platter, and top each with a piece of smoked salmon. Distribute the sour cream evenly between the chips, putting a small dollop on each one. Top each chip with a few capers, a sprinkling of scallions and black pepper, and a bit of lemon zest if desired. Makes 12 crisps

This shortcut version of the classic salmon blini appetizer couldn’t be quicker or simpler. In less than ten minutes, you’ll have an elegant and delicious bite to enjoy with cocktails, perfect for all your holiday entertaining! Potato chips have never looked so fancy. These easy nori sushi rolls will transform all the random ingredients hanging around your fridge into a meal everyone’s excited about. Whatever diet you follow, vegan, paleo, gluten-free, this recipe has you covered! For a fun dinner party, set out all of the ingredients and let guests assemble their own.

nori SUSHI ROLLS Ingredients

• 4 sheets of nori, cut diagonally in half • One cup of your favorite cooked grain (try quinoa, amaranth, • millet, whatever you like) • Handful of sliced or crumbled tempeh or tofu (optional) • Romaine lettuce leaves, cut in half • One green apple, sliced into thin strips • One avocado, pitted, peeled, and sliced

• One cucumber, sliced thinly • One scallion, sliced thinly • Handful of micro-greens, sprouts, and/or pea shoots • Basil, parsley, and or cilantro leaves • Hemp seeds, sesame seeds, and/or chia seeds • Tamari or Bragg’s amino acids • Lime wedges

To assemble, just spread a bit of your cooked grain in the wmiddle of the nori sheet, than layer on your other ingredients, and top with a dollop of the sriracha mayo. SKINNY MEXICAN CORN Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro Zest from 1 lime Chili powder, salt, and black pepper, to taste Quartered limes, to serve 4 ears of corn, husked 1 tablespoon olive oil 3 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise (or Vegenaise, if you can find it) 3 tablespoons Cotija cheese, finely crumbled

How To Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. On a sheet pan, arrange the corn and drizzle with the olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper, tossing everything together to ensure the corn is al evenly coated with olive oil. Roast the corn in the oven for 20 minutes, until tender and turning golden brown in spots. Brush the cooked corn lightly with the mayonnaise, than roll each cob in the crumbled Cotija cheese, lightly coating each cob. Arrange the corn on a platter, and sprinkle with the lime zest, chili powder, salt, pepper, and cilantro. Add the quartered limes to the platter, and enjoy! Makes 4 ears of corn

palomitas GRAPEFRUIT Ingredients • • •

5 shots vanilla vodka of your choice 1 cup freshly squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice 1 cup ginger ale or ginger soda

• • •

4 tablespoons granulated sugar splash of vanilla extract lime slices and ice to serve

How To First, make your vanilla sugar to rim the glasses. On a shallow plate, mix the sugar with just enough vanilla extract to make it sandy. Use a lime wedge to wet the rim of each glass, and dip them into the vanilla sugar to leave a nice, thin coating on the rim of the glasses.

Put a few ice cubes in each glass, and add the vanilla vodka. Top off with the grapefruit juice and the ginger soda, distributed evenly between all the glasses. Give each glass a gentle stir, and top with a thin round slice of lime. Serves 5

ROSE LEMONADE

Ingredients • • • •

5 1/4 cups water 1 cup raw sugar 1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice (roughly 7-8 lemons) 3 teaspoons rose water

How To Combine the water and sugar in a sauce pan over mediumlow heat, stirring until the sugar as dissolved. Remove from the heat and let cool. Pour saucepan mixture into a pitcher and stir in lemon juice, then add rosewater to taste. Place in the refrigerator and chill before serving. Garnish with fresh lemon slices and rose pedals.

Note: source edible flowers from your local farmers’ market, garden center or specialty grocery store for flowers that have been organically grown, free of heavy pesticides or harmful chemicals. You can also use Stevia in place of sugar for an even healthier sweet treat, and it will also eliminate the boiling of water/sugar if you’re in a crunch for time; taste as you go for desired sweetness. Serves 4

SPIKED MEYER LAVENDER LEMONADE Ingredients • • •

• • •

5 cups of water 1/2 -3/4 cup orange blossom honey (or whatever floral local honey you can find, preferably raw) 3/4 cup fresh squeezed Meyer lemon juice, about 6 lemons (or regular lemons if you can’t find Meyer lemons) 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice 4 sprigs of fresh lavender Vodka and lavender sprigs, to serve

How To In a medium size pot, bring your water to a boil. Add the honey and simmer over low heat for 5 minutes, whisking to incorporate and dissolve the honey. Off the heat, whisk in the lemon juice, lime juice, and lavender sprigs. Set aside and allow to cool for 15 minutes or so. After 15 minutes, remove the lavender sprigs, and divide the lemonade into ice filled glasses. Add 1 shot of vodka per glass (more or less to taste), and stir each glass to combine. Garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh lavender, and enjoy! Makes about 6 cups lemonade

MEYER LEMON & THYME GIMLET Ingredients • • • •

2.5 oz Gin .5 oz Meyer lemon juice (or regular lemon juice) .5 oz simple syrup or agave (one part sugar, one part water, boiled, and cooled) 2 sprigs fresh thyme

How To In a shaker filled with ice, combine all ingredients, and shake vigorously for 1 minute. Strain the cocktail into a glass, and garnish with a sprig of fresh thyme. Serves 1

How To Preheat oven to 400º F. In a large, nonstick baking dish, drizzle with oil and add halibut; top with garlic, lemon zest, 2 tbsp lemon juice, parsley, sea salt and pepper. Place in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes (keep an eye on the time, halibut can over cook quickly). Remove from the oven and serve with side dishes of your choice. Serves 2

Cut flowers and fillers, leaving a 3� stem.

Create 8 bunches using 4-5 stems each. Wrap the stems together with floral tape.

A good playlist can be a soundtrack to a memorable occasion. Whether you’re blasting music while getting dressed to go out with the girls, rocking out to a good cardio mix, or listening to some background music at a summer soirée, a great playlist can help put you in the right mood for whatever you’re doing! By using the best program for you, getting organized, and matching the style of music to your theme, you will have the perfect playlist in no time with these 8 easy steps. By Katelyn Laspisa

Find your program. Programs like Spotify, SoundCloud and iTunes make creating playlists an easy and almost essential part of the music-listening experience. For those who prefer the online source, we love Spotify; being that we’re constantly on the go, the best part is you can listen to your Spotify playlists offline, meaning you don’t need cell phone service or Wi-Fi to tune into your music.

Listen to a wide range of songs. You want to expand your music library before you start making playlists. We like to use the automatic playlist on Spotify called “starred” and we star all the songs we enjoy listening to currently. This helps to bucket all our songs into one large library.

Capture your audience. Is this playlist for yourself? Your friends? Keep your audience in mind and select music that’s appropriate for the listener(s). Assemble a “rough draft”. Compile a lot of songs you think should be included in the playlist; you may not use them all in the end, but this will help you narrow down to a more specific theme.

Edit the playlist. An optional step, but if you happen to gather more songs than you need for your playlist, start by eliminating those that don’t seem like a perfect fit. Are the lyrics wrong with the theme you are trying to accomplish? Does a certain songs tempo feel different than all the other songs? Ask yourself these types of questions as you think about what to cut out. Arrange the tracks. Think of your playlist as a listening experience -- you don’t want the listener to get bored or skip songs. Start out with a few tracks that grab the listeners attention. Group songs of similar tempos together, and gradually move into slower or faster tunes. End the mix on a high note, with one song that you think will really leave an impression on the listener. Try tying in the last song to your theme, it can make it much more effective.

Give your playlist a listen. Run through your playlist and make any last additions, cuts or arrangements.

Ingredients

2 ½ pounds salmon fillet, skin and • pin bones removed, cut into chunks • ½ red onion

2 cloves garlic

1 teaspoon fresh ginger

1 tablespoon sriracha (optional) ½ cup low-fat mayo or Vegenaise

½ teaspoon wasabi paste, or to taste

2 tablespoons fresh cilantro

6 burger buns

1 egg

2 avocados, halved and pitted

½ cup panko breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons soy sauce

Lettuce leaves and tomatoes to serve (optional)

1 tablespoon sesame oil

How To

In the bowl of your food processor fitted with the “s” blade, blitz the salmon carefully, pulsing until just finely chopped but not a paste. Remove to a large bowl and set aside in the fridge. In the same food processor, blitz together the onion, garlic, ginger, and cilantro until finely minced. Transfer to the bowl with the salmon and stir to combine. To the salmon mixture, add the panko, egg, soy sauce, sesame oil, and sriracha. Form the mixture into 6 burger patties, and place on a baking sheet to refrigerate for 15 minutes. In the meantime, whisk together the mayo and wasabi paste and set aside. Fire up your grill over medium flame, and grill the burgers for 4-6 minutes on each side, depending on the done-ness you prefer. Grill the avocado halves for 2-3 minutes, until slightly charred. Remove the peel and slice into thin slices. Grill your burger buns if desired. To assemble the burgers, spread a dollop of the wasabi aioli on each bun half, top with the salmon burger and avocado, and lettuce and tomato if using. Note: we've made these without breadcrumbs as well and they're still delicious! So, if you're trying to avoid additional carbohydrates, or are glutenfree you can still make these fitting for you; serve them up protein style with lettuce instead of a bun. Serves 8

Ingredients • • • • • • •

1 cup hulled and diced strawberries 1 cup diced mango 1 jalapeño, de-seeded and minced (use half if for a less spicy salsa) 4 tablespoons finely minced red onion 1 tablespoon minced jalapenos (to taste) Juice and zest of 1 lime (more to taste) Salt and pepper to taste

How To In a large bowl, combine all the above ingredients, and stir well. Allow to macerate at room temperature for 10 minutes, check the seasoning, adding more salt, pepper, lime juice, or agave as needed. Serves about 4

to use fresh ingredients whenever possible. Yellow corn, especially when used in-season during the summer, is extra delicious fresh off the cob.

FRESH CORN SALAD Ingredients • • • • • • • •

6 ears of corn, kernels stripped off 1 tablespoon coconut oil ½ red onion, minced ½ green jalapeno, seeds in or out, depending on taste 1 tablespoon cilantro, minced 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 1 small handful of cherry tomatoes, halved Salt and pepper, to taste

How To In a large pan, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Add the corn kernels, and sauté for 5 or 6 minutes, just long enough to take the bite out of the corn without turning it to mush.Turn the heat off, and while the corn is still warm, add the remaining ingredients and toss well to combine. Add the jalapeno slowly, gauging how spicy you’d like the salad to taste. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and a bit more lime juice as needed. Serve warm or cold, topped with more tomatoes, lime and cilantro if you’d like. Serves 4

HOW TO MAKE A champagne tower

4 EASY STEPS

Create your tower in layers of squares. For example, if the bottom layer is 10 glasses by 10 glasses, the layer above that would be 9 by 9 and so on.

Make sure each glass touches the surrounding glasses. There should be a diamond-shaped gap between the glasses.

When building the next layer, center the stem over the diamond openings that were created by the layer below. Fill in the layer with glasses. Repeat until there is a single coupe on top.

Once fully assembled, begin slowly pouring champagne into the top glass. It will trickle downward, filling each layer.
