Favorites of the Season Under $200!

I like to set a budget when I shop, and in this case, it's $200. Whether gifting to a friend, or grabbing a little something for myself, I opt for items I know will get a lot of use! Here's what I'm loving this fall...

The Metallic Paper Tote in Rose Gold MY PAPER TOTE

$39 | mypapertote.com Yup, you read that right, that's a “paper tote.” Made of washable paper, that looks and functions just like leather, this environmentally friendly tote is large enough to handle everything from errands to travel. Plus, what’s not to love about rose gold?!

Angler Eyewear Chain

Long Lasting Matte Lip Paint Liquid Lipstick in Seductive

LUCY FOLK

GIRLACTIK

$75 | lucyfolk.com

$23 | girlactik.com If fall had an official lip color, it would be this one! It’s slightly moody, while still being utterly elegant, with the perfect matte finish. Bonus: it stays on for hours and hours without having to reapply. From workday to date night, you’ll see me wearing this shade all season long.

Recently, I’ve found myself losing track of my sunglasses — maybe it’s my busy schedule that keeps me on the move! Thankfully, I’ve found the solve: ever-so-chic eyewear chains by Lucy Folk. Functional, yet beautiful — count me in!

Washed Linen Duvet Set LOOMSTEAD

$199 | loomstead.com Where can you find quality bedding at a steal-worthy price? Loomstead. There’s nothing quite as wonderful as a cozy bed, and good bedding makes a huge impact. I recently topped my bed with Loomstead’s linen duvet set and have been on cloud 9 ever since.

Sydney Satin Platform Crossband Quarter Strap Sandal Heels WHO WHAT WEAR COLLECTION

$37.99 | target.com Satin + green, yes please. These platform sandal heels go with practically everything. And green is definitely the new black. I’m always looking for a little extra height, and these guys are comfortable, too! 10

Skinny Overalls: Raw-Hem Edition MADEWELL

$148 | madewell.com I’m a sucker for overalls; they’re easy to throw on and can be dressed up or down. I have this same pair in blue jean, and recently grabbed a black jean pair to incorporate into my fall wardrobe. They’ve already been on repeat more than a handful of times!

Retin-A:

The Beauty Product You Didn’t Know You Were Missing Photography: Shannan Leigh Photography

If you’ve ever looked for a new beauty product, then you know how overwhelming it can be to find the perfect one. There are so many options available to us today on the shelves or that can be prescribed by a doctor, that it’s difficult to know where to begin (or which ones are actually worth the money). Plus, who has the room for more than a few beauty products in their bathroom anyways? Let’s simplify our lives, shall we?

Benefits of Retin-A

What if we told you that there is a beauty product that has been around for years, has multiple purposes, and actually works (really well!)? Would you believe us? You should. Meet Retin-A.

Retin-A refers to any retinoid, including Stieva-A, Tazorac, and Differin. It’s a topical cream that comes from vitamin A that works to improve both the health and appearance of the skin. It’s required that you have a prescription to purchase Retin-A, but there are multiple strengths and generic versions that you can try that will work just as well. Retin-A has been the talk of the beauty industry for decades and was first used to treat acne. But over the years, it has proven to provide a variety of benefits, making it the ultimate go-to product.

Let’s talk about what makes this product so magical. Check out the list below to see why we’re in favor of Retin-A and how it could be the answer to your skincare needs. • •

Proven to reduce, reverse and prevent wrinkles, making it the perfect antiaging agent. Great for building collagen — aiding the skin in becoming thicker and stronger, all while tightening. Collagen is what gives skin its structure, firmness and elasticity. Helps improve acne (and blackheads). Retin-A has a powerful exfoliation to it, which gets rid of the dead skin cells that clog the pores and lead to breakouts. That same exfoliation process helps give the skin a natural glow. Removing dead skin cells and giving your face a more radiant, smoother feel and texture.

Doctors generally recommend using no more than a pea-sized dab of Retin-A for your entire face (a little goes a long way!), once every three nights or, if you have sensitive skin, only once a week, for a few weeks. Once your skin gets accustomed to it, you can increase application to every other night, working your way up to every night if your skin isn’t showing signs of irritation. It’s also recommended that you take precautions with suncare while using Retin-A — use it at night, not in the morning — and opt to wear a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF during the day to protect your skin. We assure you, this is one product you can count on sticking around. Will you try for yourself? Let us know @mollymymag on Instagram and Facebook.

VINTAGE À LA MODE

The fall season is upon us and what better time to try out some new looks than the time of year when you can pair a cami with a light scarf or jeans with a bolero without the fear of freezing! It looks great and we bet you feel great in it — but we’d be lying if we said that new look wasn’t missing something. Think: Vintage. While some may doubt the power of a vintage piece, you just can’t ignore the statement that is made when someone pairs a contemporary outfit with a timeless item. We’re talking adding a little flare to a simple outfit or even making a stunner ensemble stand out just a little bit more. We think style should be unique; so here’s your chance. You may be feeling a little unsure of where to start, so as we like to do, we talked to the experts. Espionage LA is a one-of-a-kind store featuring vintage finds, delicate artisan jewelry, mid-century barware, home décor and high-end designer resale clothing. Not only did we get some one-on-one suggestions from store owner Taylor King, we also talked about sample looks — and we’re happy to share! “My favorite part about vintage and resale designer clothing is that it will never be made again,” Taylor explained to us. “You now own a piece of history!” Let’s start with the basics: Where can you find vintage? Well, it’s probably more accessible than you may think. Our favorite stops? Flea markets, little boutiques and the one place we know you’re overlooking — the family closet! That’s right, whether it’s your mom, your aunt or your grandma (maybe even the great-grandma who handed down some beautiful pieces) we guarantee there’s a treasure trove of gorgeous classic pieces that would make any outfit irreplaceable. Taylor’s tip? Don’t overdo it. “When you wear vintage head-to-toe it looks as if you are dressed in costume or trying to live in another era,” she tells us. “It’s 2017 and your style can be completely your own and a mix of all the decades. For example, if you are wearing a vintage dress with a print, wear it with a modern shoe, like sneakers or slides.” Essentially, don’t be afraid to pull in some outside influences to really spice up your look and incorporate where it fits best. Here are 4 à la mode examples of how Taylor mixed classic with contemporary. Read on for details.

WEDDING

WEAR

The Etro dress is perfect for an early fall wedding as the weather is still warm but the colors make it clear that fall is here. The heavy silk and detailed embroidery make it the ideal dress for a special occasion. Wear it with confidence and dance the night away! Details: Etro silk embroidered dress, $445. Wasabi silver cross necklace, $80. Marni platform sandals, size 38, $220.

KEEPING IT

CLASSY

Who doesn’t love Scandal’s Kerry Washington and Miss Sloane’s Jessica Chastain’s awesome chic and classy style? We definitely do, and the Alaia dress is just the look we’re going for this season. Great for a black tie or formal event — anyone would look like a girlboss! It’s avant-garde structure and top-to-bottom zipper make it super classy but still leave something to the imagination. Tip: If a dress has a specific detail, like this one does with the zipper, jewelry isn't a necessity. The embellishments work well alone and all that’s needed are a simple pair of studs or a delicate bracelet.

DECLUTTER THE CLOSET Ready to move some of those vintage pieces into your wardrobe? That probably means it’s time to make some space in your closet — which we know is stressful! What to keep? What to donate? What fits? What doesn’t? These are questions that plague our daily lives! Taylor shares some great advice that may just make the process a little smoother and less painful. “The past is the past,” she shares. “Some people tend to get attached to a memory or the amount of money they spent on the item. But if you haven't worn something in, max two years, then it’s time to let it go! Anything that is pilling, has stains, or rips, say good-bye!” This isn’t the only rule, of course. Like anything else though, Taylor allows for exceptions, “like a priceless vintage piece or a timeless investment.” Things that are definite pieces to remove? Shoes! “If your nice heels have scuffs around the toe and look slightly beat up, it’s time to get a new pair,” says Taylor. “Nothing ruins a cocktail dress more than beat up heels.” Her last tip: stop looking at the size and start looking at the fit. “Size is only a number. Nothing makes you feel worse than constantly saying you're going to shed unwanted weight so you can fit into a dress or a pair of pants. Buy the pants that fit and you'll not only feel more confident, but look it too. Nobody knows what size you're wearing — just how great you look!” We definitely agree with this one!

14

Details: Alaia zippered dress, size 2, $595. Shashi tassel bracelet, $56. Stella & Bow rings. Gucci pumps, size 38, $175.

Details: Oscar de la Renta beaded bolero, $345. Tibi silk camisole, size 2, $68, Celine suede sandals, size 38, $198. Alexander Wang Pelican bag, $440.

DOUBLE

DUTY

This look is a good choice to wear to work for an easy transition to a night look. Wear flats during the day, then strap on those heels right before you meet up with girlfriends or go on a date. The beaded bolero is such a beautiful statement piece, but isn't overly flashy when paired with a simple pair of skinny jeans and a tank. Tip: Emerald green is also a huge color for fall. It's so rich but simple at the same time and can be coordinated with outfits just as you would with the color black. Mix, match and have some fun with it all. Most importantly, be you!

WEEKEND

WARDROBE Looking to get away for the weekend, maybe to somewhere like Santa Barbara? This is your look! With this you have a sense of ranch life, thanks to the suede skirt and horsebit scarf — but don't forget your roots — you’re still a city girl at heart! Personally, we love a high-waisted anything with a top tucked in. Scarves are also a great way to pull an outfit together, while staying warm without having to wear a jacket. Tip: Roll clothes to prevent wrinkling and pack shoes first in shoe bags. Details: Josie Natori silk camisole, Size M, $68. Ralph Lauren Country suede skirt, $198. Gucci horsebit scarf, $220. Prada suede pumps, size 38, $198. Lanvin weekender bag, $665.

For all of these looks and so much more, visit espionagela.com and browse the website. And if you’re local to Los Angeles, stop by the store at 7456 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. 90036. 15

First Comes Love, Then Comes...

THE RING! THE INSIDE SCOOP ON PICKING OUT THAT SPECIAL BLING, FROM PETER MARCO BEVERLY HILLS

It’s the symbol that tells the world you’re headed to the altar; a declaration of one’s commitment to the future. Whether you’re hoping that a proposal is around the corner, thinking about buying a ring for the special lady in your life, or shopping around together looking to find the perfect diamond, we’ve got the answers to your questions. Diamond education is important when making such a large purchase and definitely should not be taken lightly, which is why we went straight to the expert (and our go-to jeweler) to get some of the biggest questions answered. Peter, owner of Peter Marco Beverly Hills, talks all things diamonds, from ring sizes, to current trends and what you might be missing if you only pay attention to the 4 c’s (cut, color, clarity and carat). When we talk about the 4 c’s, you’d think we’re getting all the value of a diamond in four quick points. But really, as Peter points out, there’s so much more to take into account when talking about diamonds and their value. “A diamond certificate, or report, is issued by an accredited independent gemological laboratory — which grades a diamond’s 4 c’s,” Peter explains. “But it also grades a number of other things that can show the value of the ring.” Some other attributes to look for in a ring while shopping, according to the highest certification available for a diamond, are listed under the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is a respected independent laboratory. Their Diamond Grading Report suggests you also take into consideration: date, depth, fluorescence and birthmarks, to name a few.

Photography: Shannan Leigh Photography Diamonds: Peter Marco Beverly Hills Ring Box: The Mrs. Box

16

Fluorescence is determined in five grades and by different tints. While this is important, Peter feels strongest that it is up to the client. “Some clients prefer fluorescence while others do not, simply as a result of individual taste,” he says. Where depth is concerned, you can determine proportion of a stone by its flat top — there are percentages of table that constitute as ideally cut diamonds. “All stones disperse proportion differently,” Peter adds. “You do not want a diamond that is too shallow, and yet you do not want one that is too deep.” To those couples who are searching for the ring together, Peter suggests getting some ideas before you head to the jeweler. “There are so many shapes,” he says. “It will narrow it down a lot. Then decide on a comfortable budget and what you see with the size and color. Maybe go with a diamond that’s a little smaller so you can maintain color and clarity, but ultimately save money.” One of the biggest questions most men have is ring size. How do you get the right fit when you want the proposal and the ring to be a surprise? Peter says it’s mostly a guessing game, but you can try one thing: “Borrow a ring that they're not wearing,” he points out. “Then size it from there. Typically, 6 to 6.5 is the average size ring finger for a woman. If you don’t want to give anything away at all and make it the ultimate surprise, we can sometimes base it on how tall she is and how much she weighs and then tweak it later.”

AVOID THE MYTHS It’s no secret that there’s a long history that accompanies “the engagement ring.” From brilliance and sparkle to price and durability, we’ve heard it all. Well, we’ve got some myths to debunk for you — getting you in the right direction to make a purchase to last a lifetime! BIGGER ISN’T (NECESSARILY) BETTER Many think that carat weight is all that matters when getting that big beautiful stone in ring form. However, a massive engagement ring doesn’t mean its brilliance and sparkle is better. Keep in mind that cut, not carat, is what allows the diamond to perform best under light. DON’T BREAK THE BANK The price you pay is really determined by your budget. Know what you can spend and don’t be distracted by those extra expensive diamonds. As we already mentioned, while bigger can be beautiful, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s better. Decide on a budget that works for you (and/or your partner) and do some research on the best quality you can get for that price range. YES, DIAMONDS CHIP

Peter Marco Beverly Hills sees clients from all over the world, and they’re family owned so you can forget about feeling like just a number when you walk inside — they give you one-on-one attention and work with a wide range of budgets. If you want to know what’s currently trending for wedding rings, Peter Marco Beverly Hills is where you want to look. So what has Peter noticed for 2017 and 2018 styles? “Round is the most classic,” Peter shares. “Cushions, radiant gems and long-graded ovals are some of the biggest looking stones relative to their weights. And some non-traditional vintage-style rings are desired, but would mean more metals. The client typically wants to go less metal and more diamond, though (at least for now).” For Peter, the more people know the better when shopping around for the diamond of their choice. “I educate people,” he points out. “No one takes the time to educate people the way that we do. GIA has become better and better. Three to six years ago, it was definitely not the same environment. Over the last year to year and a half, we’ve seen a lot of changes.”

As we all know, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But sometimes, that’s not the case. Wearing a ring daily leaves them vulnerable to scratches and chips. And sadly, diamonds are included in that. While the stone is much more durable than others (it’s the hardest gem material that exists), they aren’t impervious to damage. For certain shapes, if hit in just the right place along the plane or girdle edge, a chip can easily occur. So take it easy on those rings! For more information, visit 4cs.gia.edu.

For more information, visit petermarco.com or call (310) 278-5353. If you happen to be in the Beverly Hills area, stop in and look at Peter Marco’s beautiful diamonds firsthand — Peter Marco Beverly Hills is located at 252 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills, CA. 90210.

NEW ENGLAND CHARM AT ITS FINEST – TAKE A PEEK INTO THIS COZY PRE-WEDDING DAY, WELCOME DINNER (keep flipping to see the big day!) Photography: Valorie Darling and Nydiarose Vario

What is a welcome dinner? And how important is it when having a destination wedding? A welcome dinner is exactly what it sounds like: a dinner to welcome all of your guests before your wedding day! It is a great way to allow your friends and family, traveling from out of town, to settle in and get acquainted with the area. It’s also the perfect opportunity to give your guests some extra time to get to know one another. As soon-tobe newlyweds, it gave Steven and Vanessa a chance to spend a little extra time with their guests and kick off the wedding weekend in a more casual setting. A welcome dinner (or party!) can be in lieu of a rehearsal dinner or act as a great precursor to a rehearsal dinner. Traditionally, a rehearsal dinner is reserved for just close family members and your bridal party; a welcome dinner is open to all guests invited to the wedding. Since Steven and Vanessa’s wedding was somewhat of a trek for the majority of the guests, a welcome dinner was an absolute must for them — they knew that with all of the excitement (and often last minute micro-managing) leading up to the big day, they wouldn’t be able to spend the kind of quality time that they desired with friends and family. They opted for farm table seating and mixed guests up (keeping couples together) so that everyone was sitting near someone they didn’t know. This was a perfect ice breaker and by the day of the wedding, everyone had a new best friend. 18

The Farm Table’s main dining room and tavern are housed within a restored farmhouse built c. 1800. The classic Georgian colonialstyle building was first established by the Hale Family and expanded over the years as their farm grew — it was no longer a farm by the 1970s, but went on to become an antique store and then, bookshop. The current state of renovations started in 2011, making the building more functional and energyefficient as it became what it is today.

Location, location... The Farm Table is a one of a kind, cozy dining experience, and one of Steven and Vanessa’s absolute favorite restaurants near Vanessa’s hometown. They utilize locally-sourced ingredients (within a 50-mile radius of the restaurant) for the menu (which changes weekly, if not daily!). Set in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, The Farm Table is surrounded by wonderful farms with bountiful harvests. Based on the couple’s previous dining experiences, whether enjoying a hot entrée during the holiday season, or sitting on their patio for a refreshing cocktail in the summer, there was no doubt in their minds when planning the welcome dinner that they would be hosting it there. The property offers a perfect mix of farm rustic and country comfort, balanced with a contemporary feel. The food and cocktails are always changing and so unique! 19

20

The Farm Table’s head Chef, Robert J. Conlin, created an array of delicious eats for the welcome dinner — and he’s sharing his noteworthy Heirloom Tomato Jam (which he used to top the yummiest steak dish)!

Heirloom Tomato Jam Ingredients: 3 lbs. Heirloom tomatoes 2 Tbsp. light brown sugar 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar Salt to flavor 1 Tsp. dried thyme Extra virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves (minced) Directions: 1. Clean tomatoes and dry, then cut in half moons. 2. In a bowl, a dd tomatoes with olive oil, garlic and salt, and toss together. 3. Place the tomatoes on a baking sheet with a rack — the skin should be upright on a baking sheet. 4. Roast in the oven at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. You will see the skin lifting off of the tomato, and at this point, they are ready. 5. Once the tomatoes are finished, use tongs to remove the skin while they are hot. 6. Place the tomatoes in a colander to extract excess water (for about 15 minutes) and reserve the liquid. Time for jam! 7. Place tomatoes, sugar, red wine vinegar, reserved liquid and salt to taste in a pan. At boiling point, reduce heat to simmer for 30 minutes or until desired consistency. Stir often. 8. Remove from the stove to cool, then enjoy! Note: This recipe doesn't have to be canned. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. For a smoother consistency, place the jam into a food processor (or high-speed blender).

SAYING “I DO” AT HOME Photography: Valorie Darling

I

t was a warm and sunny August afternoon in New England full of love, happiness and hope for the future, as one of our dearest (and talented My Magazine photographer) Vanessa Tierney wed longtime love, Steven Grayhm, in a private ceremony at her childhood estate in Erving, Massachusetts. Vanessa could not have been a more beautiful bride and everything from the flowers, to the catering, down to the smallest detail, were executed with perfection. We all watched, many with tears in our eyes, as the two exchanged vows in front of their family and friends, in an enchanted forest setting, while close friend and officiant Matt Dallas, made it official, declaring them husband and wife. It was a truly magical weekend, filled with love and laughter had by all. Read on for highlights from the wedding, the story of how the lovebirds met — and even a few tips from the bride, as she reflects on what led up to the big day!

a few of our favorite things

These items are vital to a wedding day and the special touch that each added was just another reason Steven and Vanessa, and guests, will forever remember the important details.

The details are in the wardrobe when it comes to any wedding, making the bride and groom’s style one of the most important points (and most talked about!). Steven and Vanessa, unsurprisingly, looked divine. Vanessa’s stunning wedding dress was handmade by Alexandra Grecco & Otaduy. The design she chose was a more unconventional approach to a classic wedding dress, complete with skirt, cropped silk top, flowing sheer cape and lace booties by Bella Belle Shoes. All made for a breathtaking ensemble! Vanessa chose three different looks throughout her wedding day, keeping her skirt, but interchanging her cape for a lace topper, while ending the night in a custom hand painted leather jacket by Alli K Design — complete with pink, retro Adidas kicks!

FROM THE HYPE TO THE HELP (THE GROOM'S POV) ere’s a special kind of stress that comes with having your wedding Th at your bride’s family home. Steven shares his sentiments on a lifealtering occasion that is seemingly over in a flash — and the physical and emotional exhaustion you feel after. “Ever heard of the saying, ‘You know who your friends are on moving day’? Well, it more than ever rings true the day after your wedding. If you’re having a wedding at home — like we did — you want the next morning to be as organized as possible, so all of the vendors are handled quickly. This may mean assembling a clean-up crew ahead of time to organize all of your rentals. You’ll also want extra hands on deck for cleaning and miscellaneous requests, like left-behind sunglasses! And then begins the comedown; the physical and emotional exhaustion of having just spent months preparing for a single weekend to host your closest friends and family, while experiencing a long-anticipated, intimate and highly emotional milestone in your life. And just like that — it’s over; the guests have left and it’s time to clean. From the wedding day adrenaline, to the over-stimulation of greeting your guests, accepting their well wishes, and of course, dancing all night, (add a little alcohol and limited sleep) you’re bound to feel depleted. Good news: friends always come to the rescue! We were fortunate to have a close friend stay for a few additional days to help with the heavy lifting, and I realized he was also a great source of emotional support for my wife and I, as we reflected on our wedding day. Bottom line, if you’re prepping for a wedding at home, see if a friend or family member will be available for that little extra support.” - Steven (the groom)

As for Vanessa's dapper groom, Steven, he opted for the super sleek midnight blue tuxedo, complete with: pleated point collar dress shirt, black silk twill diamond bowtie, suspenders, black linen pocket square and patent leather wood sole shoes. He had a casual outfit on standby to change into for later in the evening, but ended up wearing his tuxedo for the entire event as it was extremely comfortable both during the warm and sunny day, and the cool New England evening. His tuxedo (as well as his brothers' and officiant's) were all rented from The Black Tux.

WITNESSING LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT Steven and Vanessa asked close friend, Matt Dallas, to officiate their wedding. Matt shares the memorable moment he witnessed the two meeting... “The day we arrived at the golf and country club, we had been driving nonstop through the night. We hadn’t showered in a while and definitely weren’t looking our best. As we made our way to the entrance, a vision of beauty walked our way. Steven immediately grabbed my arm and said, 'Oh man, that’s the girl I’m going to marry. It’s like an angel is walking towards me.' And as if this girl couldn’t be any more perfect, the first thing she said to us was, 'you boys look like you need a brew.' She led us inside and offered us both a Lefty’s beer. We were immediately awestruck by the intricate display that Vanessa and her crew put together for the fundraiser. Over the past few years these two have become a serious power couple and I can honestly say they are two of the most giving, passionate, hardworking people I know.” - Matt Dallas

Let’s face it, the food at a wedding can make or break your guests' experience on your big day. That’s why Vanessa and Steven opted to have Heirloom Catering prepare a handcrafted, three-course menu. Owner and chef, Brandi Parker, is from nearby Amherst, Massachusetts and believes the best ingredients to source are both local and organic. We happen to agree! Her passion for farm fresh ingredients even led her to start the nonprofit, LOVE FLOW Inc., which is dedicated to sustainably ending the world-wide problem of undernourishment. This particular wedding menu was inspired by locally available produce and classic New England fare, paired with new age flavor combinations. It was delectable (if we do say so ourselves!). If you’re local to the MA. area, then we highly recommend checking out the mouth-watering selections Heirloom Catering can prepare for your next event. TIPS FROM THE BRIDE From traditions, to makeup, to saving a few extra dollars, Vanessa shares her wedding tips that everyone can try. TO TRADITION OR NOT? Steven and I opted to forgo a number of wedding traditions, but there were some we found important to hold onto! Discuss together the traditions that are important to both sides of the family and decide what works for you and your partner. There may be some compromises, but it is your day and you should do what makes you both comfortable. We knew we’d be stressed out if we had to be apart all morning on the day of our wedding, so we spent that time together and helped each other get ready (and made ourselves available to assist with any last minute set-up questions). In the end it kept us calm. We still opted to get dressed separately and have a first look, which made the reveal just as special. This was a compromise that worked for both of us! SAVE WHERE YOU CAN I know this sounds risky, but I have to rave about my experience buying wholesale flowers online. I couldn’t find the florals I wanted locally at a reasonable price, so I ordered flowers online at fiftyflowers.com. Using their online service I was able to get the flowers I wanted that were in season. The best part? The ordering process was a breeze! You select colors and time of year, and it narrows down the options available. Three days before the wedding, flowers arrived in boxes, in perfect condition and just days before they’re supposed to bloom, requiring minimal attention. I trimmed them, stored them in water and put them in a cool, dark place. We hired a local florist to make the arrangements, but with extra hands to help, you can do that on your own and save even more money! DIY MAKEUP Options for hiring a local makeup artist were limited, because of the proximity of my hometown, so I relied on Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge for makeup lessons. One month before the wedding, I attended a 2-hour makeup lesson with one of Blushington’s artists. She applied makeup to one side of my face, and had me practice replicating it on the other side — helping me to learn the techniques she used for each look. As someone who doesn’t wear a lot of makeup, this actually taught me how to achieve looks that seemed impossible before the lesson. I highly recommend you practice your makeup applications a few times leading up to your wedding so that you feel confident. Surprisingly, doing my own makeup actually calmed my nerves and gave me a chance to have some alone time on the big day. TAKE IT ALL IN This might be the most important thing to remember. On the day of your wedding, try to relax and take it all in. All the planning that can be done is done. Steven and I both admitted that we had tunnel vision throughout our wedding day. Neither of us even knew what the location ended up looking like (until we saw photos!) because we were so focused on each other and the gravity of the moment. Take time here and there (that day/night) to step back and actually enjoy the moment. The people you brought together for your wedding will never be together in this location again. Let that soak in, and don’t be afraid to take a few deep breaths. 30

Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge offers Makeup 101 classes to prep for the big day (or any special occasion) if you prefer to do your own makeup. Whether it’s affordability, convenience or even peace of mind, applying your own makeup is something you can do to remove that added wedding-day stress. The most wonderful thing about Blushington’s offerings is that you can take multiple classes and really perfect your technique. It’s worth the money you spend — Vanessa raved about her instructor. Check out what she said in her tips, and visit blushington.com to find out more.

Last but certainly not least — the wedding photographer you choose will affect how you and your guests are able to enjoy those special memories captured — for years to come! Steven and Vanessa were extremely fortunate to have one of LA's most sought after wedding photographers (and close friend and colleague!), Valorie Darling, behind the camera to capture every moment during their special weekend. Her journalistic approach and creative eye, express the energy and raw emotion of the day in timeless imagery to be cherished for generations to come!

George & Lizzie by Nancy Pearl

Sour Heart: Stories

The Burning Girl by Claire Messud

by Jenny Zhang This emotionally riveting debut novel from Nancy Pearl is about an unlikely marriage that comes to a crossroads. George and Lizzie have completely different ideas and understandings about what love and marriage should be. They both grew up with very different lives — George from a warm and loving family, while Lizzie grew up as an only child of two famous psychologists who didn’t give her any of the love she desired. Throughout their marriage, George is happy, while Lizzie feels something is missing. That is, until a secret from Lizzie’s past forces her to face her fears head on, along with the relationship her and George have built together.

This debut collection, published by Lena Dunham’s new publisher, Lenny, tells the story through the eyes of Chinese American girls growing up in New York City. Told by the daughters of Chinese immigrants who left behind their lives as artists back home only to discover that it’s just as much a struggle to survive in America. Running scams in Atlantic City and dumpster diving for food, making money isn’t as easy as expected. Author Jenny Zhang shows compassion and moral courage, while telling seven dark and funny tales about a girl’s youth, all while searching for what it means to be a family and quickly lose it.

Friends since childhood, Julia and Cassie have always wanted to escape their quiet town of Royston, Massachusetts. Though best friends who shared everything, the girls begin to realize they are no longer on the same paths as they grow older. Soon, Cassie goes down the path she had always thought about, but she soon finds that she’s in danger and her friendship with her oldest friend is about to crash and burn. The Burning Girl mixes fable with a coming-of-age tale looking to answer the questions: “To what extent can we know ourselves and others? What are the stories we create to comprehend our lives and relationships?”

Bonus Book! The Good Daughter

by Karin Slaughter From the No. 1 bestselling author, Karin Slaughter, comes her latest thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat. “Two girls are forced into the woods at gunpoint. One runs for her life. One is left behind…” It’s been 28 years since a small-town family was torn apart by a horrific attack that left Charlotte and Samantha Quinn without a mother. Charlie is now becoming a lawyer, just like her father, and just as expected. But when tragedy strikes her town yet again, it pushes Charlie to relive the nightmare that tore her and her family apart all those years ago. Don’t miss this one! The Good Daughter is considered the best suspense novel of the year.

Wish You Were Here by Renée Carlino

Charlotte is ready for a change from the life she’s been living. She spent the majority of her adult life going from job-to-job and boyfriend-to-boyfriend, hoping to find that missing something. That is until she meets Adam, a gorgeous and soulful painter, who seems to feel just as lost as she does. After an amazing night of adventures and deep conversations, Charlotte is left confused when the next day she receives the cold shoulder from Adam. After months of silence from him, Charlotte is determined to find out what happened the morning after their magical night. What she doesn’t know is that the ending has already been written and she can’t rewrite what should have been their wild love story.

The Color Project

by Sierra Abrams Bernice Aurora Wescott, known as Bee to all, is desperate to keep her actual name a secret. But that all changes when she meets the beloved local boy, Levi, who runs The Color Project, a charity in their community. But then a family illness hits and Bee doesn’t know where to turn. Though The Color Project was her haven, she is lost again and in order to be the support her family needs, Bee must give up her name to Levi — letting him into her life completely, hoping that it’s not too late and that she hasn’t lost one of the most important people in her life. The Color Project dives deep into the heart of what family means in our lives and how love, in all facets, can hold up against some of the toughest challenges we face. You won’t be sorry you picked this one up early!

COSTUME

As October arrives, Halloween is already on the mind — we get consumed with decorating and planning for All Hallows’ Eve (honestly, who doesn’t?!). Culture has assured us that you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a little spook and treats, or a really, really good costume. Though we love playing dress up, we are adults with realistic budgets, so spending the big bucks (or even little bucks!) on something only to wear it once is definitely not high on our list of priorities (and with busy schedules, making something from scratch isn’t always an option). So you ask, what’s the solve? It’s simple! Reuse items in your own closet (gasp!), or invest in an item of clothing that can be used for a number of holidays or events, not just Halloween. Put a lot of focus on hair, makeup, and of course, attitude, and you’re sure to have a unique, memorable ensemble. Trust us! We love couples' costumes, but what we love even more is group costumes! The vision? Out of this world — The sun, moon and star(s). Without further ado, here’s how we turned a few favorite dresses into unearthly costumes.

Spooky-Sweet

Halloween Treats Tricks and favorite treats! There’s no doubt that there is something so sweet about Halloween (literally!), but as we adult, bowls of candy might not do the trick for us quite like they used to (or we’ve just become more aware of what we put inside our bodies). That said, whipping up something homemade in the kitchen sounds like the perfect way to celebrate while still listening to our sweet tooth! Lauren Lowstan of A Sweet Savory is sharing a couple adorablyspooky treats to try while you watch Hocus Pocus (The. Best. Movie. Ever!), and enjoy the thrill of All Hallows’ Eve.

Note: Skip the “eyes” on these sweets, and you’ll have yourself treats perfect for fall, well after Halloween. Recipes: A Sweet Savory by Lauren Lowstan Photography: Vanessa Tierney

MUMMY APPLE PIE (dairy-free)

Ingredients: Whole Wheat Pie Dough 3 cup whole wheat flour 1 ½ Tsp. salt 3 Tbsp. coconut sugar 1 cup non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening 1 egg 1 Tsp. white vinegar 5 Tbsp. water Filling 4 granny smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into thin slices ½ cup coconut sugar 1 Tsp. cinnamon A pinch of salt Topping 3 Tbsp. turbinado sugar 1 egg white Mummy Eyes White fondant (in the shape of a circle) Black food coloring (to be used as the pupil of the eye) Note: If you don't want to go through the trouble of making fondant mummy eyes, you can buy eye sprinkles, which are easily found around Halloween time. Or, you can take some frosting and pipe two circles of frosting straight onto the top of your tart.

38

Directions: 1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt and coconut sugar. Add in the shortening and mix with your hands or a fork until you get pea-sized crumbs. 2. Add in the egg, vinegar and water and mix with your hands until it becomes a cohesive dough. 3. Roll out half of the dough on a lightly-floured surface until ⅛” thick (you don't want to chill the dough; it will be too hard to work with). 4. Place into a 9" tart pan and press up against the sides. 5. Place in freezer until you're ready to fill with apples. 6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 7. Peel, core and slice your apples. Add the slices to a medium size bowl, add in coconut sugar, cinnamon and salt, and mix until apples are thoroughly coated in the cinnamon sugar. Set aside. 8. Roll out the other half of your dough. Slice into ½”-¾” thin long strips. Set them aside. 9. Take your frozen tart pan out of the freezer and add the sweetened apple slices to your chilled pie crust. 10. Start placing your thin long strips of crust horizontally across the top of the tart. Crisscross some of them, making a mummy-like pattern. Continue until the entire top of your pie is well-covered with strips. 11. In a small bowl, whisk the egg white until foamy and brush across the tops of the pie. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar. 12. Bake in your preheated oven, until the top is golden brown and the apples inside are bubbling. 13. Take out of the oven and let cool completely. 14. Make the mummy eyes while you're waiting for your tart to cool. 15. Sprinkle a little bit of cornstarch on a work surface area (this helps the fondant to not stick to your surface). Roll out a tiny bit of fondant and cut into 1" circles. 16. Dip a toothpick into black food coloring and make a pupil in the center of the white circle. 17. Place the eyeballs somewhere in middle of the tart. It's fun to place them a little underneath the apples or crust top, so it looks like they are peeking out of the tart.

MAKES 1 (9”) PIE

GHOST MERINGUES (dairy-free, gluten-free)

Ingredients: 3 egg whites (make sure there is no egg yolk) ¾ cup granulated sugar ¼ Tsp. cream of tartar ½ Tsp. vanilla extract ¼ Tsp. almond extract Silver or gold dragees (or any ball sprinkles of your choice) Note: The trick to making meringues is to add the sugar in very slowly (add about a Tsp. of sugar in at a time). You’ll want to slowly add in the sugar so it dissolves into the egg whites. If you add it in too fast, it won't have a chance to dissolve. In the end, your meringue should be silky, and grain-free.

Directions: 1. Preheat your oven to 215 degrees. 2. Make sure the bowl you’re using is completely dry of any liquids or oils. 3. Add the egg whites and cream of tartar in a clean standing mixer bowl, fitted with a whisk attachment. Whisk on medium speed (no faster), until the mixture starts to foam. 4. Start to add in the sugar at this point. Lightly sprinkle in the sugar. 5. Watch for the soft peak stage. Your whites will start to get glossy and white, and will hold on to the whisk, but will fold over onto itself. Once you’re at this stage, you should be done with adding your sugar. If you're not, continue adding the sugar, and once done, bump the speed up to medium-high. 6. Watch for the firm peak stage. This is when the peaks should stand up on their own and the meringue will be bright white, and glossy. Don't over mix. Once you hit this stage, stop mixing. A good way to test this is to take the whisk out of the bowl, and see if the peaks stand up, or if they still flop down. 7. Add in both extracts, and whisk just until combined. 8. Place a piece of parchment paper on top of your baking sheet. 9. Add the meringue to a large piping bag, fitted with a large, round piping tip. 10. Hold the bag perpendicular to the baking sheet. Pipe out the meringue, pressing firmer twice, creating little ripples (to look like ghost shapes). You might have to pipe a few out to get the right technique down. 11. Now, comes the tedious part: with a pair of tweezers (for kitchen-use only), add 2 dragees balls to the tops of each meringue, creating the ghost eyes. 12. Bake in your preheated oven for 65 minutes. *Do not open your oven door during the entire baking time. 13. After 65 minutes, check your meringues. They should be light and feel hollow, and peel off the parchment paper very easily. Turn the oven off, but leave the meringues in there. Crack the oven (you can use a wooden spoon to do this), and let the oven completely cool down with the meringues inside.

What do you do when you’re over a person, a situation, or a prior feeling, but social media won’t let you actually forget it? We’re trapped in a sense, because there’s no detachment nowadays, or way to really remove yourself from a situation. We scroll through our feeds keeping up with what’s happening right now, but somehow it transports us back to the past. It’s no coincidence that high social media use is directly linked to depression, anxiety and that worrisome fear of being “average” (God forbid, right?!), while less social media use is connected to increased focus and lower stress levels. Some researchers are starting to believe that social media is actually more addictive than alcohol or even cigarettes. In a study from the United Kingdom, two-thirds of participants couldn’t relax if they didn’t have access to social media. But when that same group did have access to their accounts, it didn’t alleviate the stress – it simply created a different kind. Studies have shown that Facebook usage raises anxiety levels because it makes many people feel inadequate as they compare themselves to others – their life, belongings, activities and more. Even significant others are judged. And what about the friend or acquaintance who is suddenly hanging out with your ex? This is where the term, FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out, got its name. What are they doing? Why are they together? Did I make a mistake? These questions run through our heads, simply because social media incites doubt.

As humans, we have an innate need to connect with one another; we are designed to rely on and provide company for others. But as companies, metropolises, and the need for specialized work grows, we continue to be more geographically spread out, keeping us away from our core group of family and friends. While using social media allows us to connect easily, many don’t consider the repercussions. As our lives go on, our networks change. Relationships fade, but we do our best to move on. Thanks to social media, though, we aren’t just seeing what our friends and family are doing, we’re exposed to everyone’s lives – even the people we don’t want to see, like that ex you thought you were over. The network is just too big. Even if you’re not the type to spend all day scrolling through your feed, platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are key players in almost every business strategy today. If you’re not on social media, you’re really not participating in “everyday” life. This is our new “ normal.”

A recent study from the Young Health Movement showed that Instagram and Snapchat are the two platforms most detrimental to young people’s mental health and well-being. For those of us who grew up without social media, it’s the same idea as “keeping up with the Joneses,” except every single person we’re comparing ourselves to is our electronic neighbor, and we’re looking through their window on a constant basis!

The double-edged sword has never been so sharp on both ends. Social media is the forum from which we obtain information the fastest, yet its offering is so vast that we unavoidably come across pictures (and people!) we’d rather not be reminded of again. It’s creating a new curiosity that would not otherwise exist. To fight it, we can unfollow or block someone – but we criticize ourselves, thinking that it’s a sign of weakness. It’s a forced detachment over an ambivalent one. Some of us choose to continue following, whereas others (initially or indefinitely) unfollow, unfriend, or block. Regardless of how we act on this, do we ever understand the underlying causes and effects of curiosity? Where do we stand on the line between normal social media curiosity, and an unnatural obsession? And how do we nip it in the bud once and for all?

These effects go beyond depression and anxiety, though. Two-thirds of participants in the same study had trouble sleeping because of the negative emotions felt after social media use. Further, a study at Regis University in Colorado showed that the stress from using Facebook had a direct correlation to other physical health problems. Larger Facebook networks (a.k.a. having more “friends”) increased people’s daily cortisol production, a risk factor for burnout and depression.

At the end of the day, the most effective solution isto create boundaries, which can be extremely difficult in today's world. It requires resisting cultural norms. For our mental and physical health, we need to be more mindful and live in the present, not the past, and we must pay attention to the people in front of us. Anthropological research suggests that humans were not meant to have tribes greater than 150 people. I'm betting you probably have more than 150 Facebook friends and Instagram followers.

Do you really care about what they’re all doing? We are on information overload in today’s world, and while it's not realistic to completely return to how we lived before technology entered our lives, we can do our best to find some middle ground. The unfortunate truth is that social media does keep us in the past and can prevent us from fully moving on, even when we’re ready toor in some cases already have. Leave behind the feelings that you left in the past in the first place. Remember that your ex is your ex for a reason, and if someone else is enjoying his or her company — great for them. Live your life now. And if someone really needs to reach you, that person will find a way. If there is a new piece of information that will greatly impact your life, trust thatyou will find out about it. Without realizing it, we’ve been letting social media control us. Now it’s time for us to take control. Allow social media to be an added informant in your life, but don't let its information dictate how you live your life.

TIPS TO LOWER SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE Let’s be honest — we’re still going to use our phones and computers, but we can adjust our usage for the sake of our sanity. Protect your mental health and really try to live in the world in front of you with a few simple steps. •

Turn off your Instagram and Facebook notifications. You don’t need to see your phone light up every single time someone replies to your comment.

Give yourself phone-free time in the morning and before you go to bed. The texts will still be there when you turn it on.

Unfollow the people who don’t make you feel good.

Put your phone away when you're with other people. Focus on the present moment, and give them your full attention so you're giving others the best of you, right now.

DAILY REMINDER:

LOVE THYSELF

BODY CONFIDENCE IS SOMETHING MOST OF US HAVE TO WORK AT ALL THE TIME. We have to remind ourselves daily that what we see in the mirror goes beyond adequate – we’re beautiful! But that’s not as easy as it sounds. Let’s be honest, we should all be a lot kinder to our emotional selves than we are, and the first place to start is being happy and proud of what we look like on the outside.

42

It’s as simple as waking up in the morning feeling both strong and confident. From the moment you step out of bed, set the intention that you will look in the mirror, whether you got too little sleep the night before or you woke up sick, and tell yourself that you look great; that you feel great. It’s that easy (and that hard!).

Let’s face it: we definitely do not shower ourselves with enough positivity. We’re more involved with building up other people’s confidence, that we just don’t worry enough about ourselves. But maybe it’s time to be a bit selfish now and again. Here’s the thing, if you don’t think it then why should anyone else? When you feel good about yourself and lead a life with confidence then that positivity and light pours out of you. And then it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks. What matters is how you feel. There’s so much more to be gained from feeling good about yourself, too. That positive attitude will filter out into the other parts of your life! When you feel good, you also look good and that makes you confident for whatever may be in store for you in the day ahead. Much like a good cup of coffee in the morning, a positive attitude toward yourself will do wonders for kickstarting your day off right. As women, we need to stop looking for perfection and start cherishing and owning those imperfections that make us unique; that make us beautiful. So how do we find that confidence and positivity when everything around us is serving us images of what we might deem perfection? The first step is accepting the beauty that we all possess. The next is making a conscious effort to stay true to that mindset and own our physical appearance. And the third step is to find ways to help that positivity along. Are you comfortable in what you’re wearing and confident in how you’re presenting yourself? It kind of all starts with what we’re putting on in the morning before we leave the house, ready to tackle the day.

IF YOU DON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE FROM THE JUMP, THEN IT REALLY IS ALL DOWNHILL FROM THERE. That’s where we say, ThirdLove comes in. What started out of frustration for never having a bra that fit right, co-founder Heidi Zak decided enough was enough. Breaking out of the standard sizing mold, ThirdLove offers unique sizes (even half-sizes) that are a correct fit for YOUR body. And that’s just music to our ears. With a tag line that already fills us up with confidence, “Our bras just fit – so you can get back to running the world,” how can you not be immediately intrigued? They are looking to fit all women — ThirdLove wants to #breakthemold and push women to first feel good, then feel confident and finally, feel inspired. A few clicks on the site and a personal Fit Finder later, and you’re choosing what to receive in your mailbox. Plus, trying out your new bra for free, on top of it. Yep, to ensure you get the correct size, ThirdLove will first send you your size bra to “try before you buy”. Once you’re comfy and confident, you’re ready to order as many bras as you need. It’s really amazing when we stop thinking about how we feel in what we’re wearing, both under our clothes and in our clothes themselves, and decide to just feel good no matter what; approaching life in a new, fresh and invigorated way. Before we know it, our negative energy has gone away, that criticism of ourselves has stopped and we’re officially loving everyday life and, more importantly, ourselves. Because the most important thing happens when we first love ourselves — we are in a much healthier place to love the people around us. And isn’t that what it’s all about? Loving one another as we would ourselves? So let’s step away from the doubts and concerns and the criticism that we push on our own person and start to be more of a friend to our bodies than an enemy. ThirdLove certainly wants to help us do this — and we think they’re onto something, because feeling comfortable in your own skin is just as important as feeling comfortable in your bra. And we can probably all agree that a great bra is the cornerstone to having a great day, month, year, and well, life. 43

A Lifestyle Calculator

What is “financial freedom” – and why does such a colloquial term carry such emotional connotation for us – frustration, fear, drive, or even hope? In the Netflix original series, Ozark, Jason Bateman plays a financial advisor who relocates his family so he can launder millions of dollars for the Mexican drug cartel. Albeit that we don’t take financial advice from fictional characters that are on the wrong side of money – there are some interesting quotes which deserve restatement:

“What is money? It’s everything if you don’t have it, right? Half of all American adults have more credit card debt than savings – 25% have no savings at all – and only 15% of the population is on track to fund even 1 year of retirement.” “Patience, frugality, sacrifice – when you boil it down, what do those 3 things have in common? They’re choices. Money is not peace of mind. Money is not happiness. Money is, at its essence, that measure of a [person’s] choices.” 44

Saving is tough. Saving is basically like biology, not physics – its core principles stay the same throughout life, but our ability to save as a practice is affected by unpredicted and under-predicted life changes. We must be perceptive to these changes and anticipate them. We must know whether or not lifestyle inflation is affecting us, and if so, at what rate – or if we’re running up against expenses we have not planned for. We must know that a solid financial position (right now), according to our job status + bank accounts + retirement savings may not guarantee the same or similar level of financial position in 2 years, or in 15 years. Changes to our financial position are often self-imposed – such as a lack of patience, lack of frugality, and lack of sacrifice. These things aside, we still have to go head on against the inevitably expensive times – such as relocation to an expensive city, down payment on a first home, home renovation, engagement ring, wedding, honeymoon, higher education, babies, vacation with children, healthcare, and so on. With the hundreds of articles posted about personal finance, how do we sift through what looks good and ignore what doesn’t? The worst advice is vague advice – and the second worst form of advice is incomplete advice. What can we really take away from the “5 tips on XYZ” posted by one of our LinkedIn connections? What is our next move when we hear from a friend about stocks, cryptocurrencies, or other hot topics that are not universally relevant to the millennial community at large?

Some millennials are not very comfortable with the world of finance and investing and do not get outside advisory, so we benefit the most from advice that is trimmed way, way down – into something so simple that we can actually do something with it the very same day – yet, is still clear and detailed enough that we learn about ourselves in the process. Our simple experiment we bring to you is called the “Lifestyle Calculator” – which is “that measure of a person’s choices”. It takes a behavioral pulse on our financial practices – measuring, and translating behavior onto paper to boost self-awareness – which can lead to financial diligence, which can lead to financial freedom. Yes, getting promoted and growing your gross income can offset periods of weaker financial habits – but gross income should never make us myopic. Gross is just the starting point. Everyone knows their gross, but not everyone knows, to the dollar, how much is flowing into their bank account(s) every month? We need to peel the onion back a few layers – and ask ourselves how much we are spending, and netting. The strategy should always be twofold: Work at increasing gross income (which is controllable to some extent), and; Manage your lifestyle (which is actually, more controllable than the former).

Here is our “Lifestyle Calculator” experiment. Excel makes this very easy to do, even for those that hardly use it. This old-school tactic takes a deep dive, unlike some of the apps out there built for money management. When you’re ready: 1. Note your Monthly Take-home Pay. 2. Add up your Monthly Fixed Expenses (literally everything on automatic deduction/ billing, and everything you have recurring monthly obligations to pay – like rent/ mortgage, car lease payments, finance payments, utilities, cable, internet, parking, gym memberships/social club dues, music apps, subscriptions, etc.) 3. Calculate Monthly Take-home Pay – Total Monthly Fixed Expenses = Monthly Discretionary Pay. 4. Calculate Monthly Discretionary Pay / 31 = Daily Discretionary Pay. 5. Daily Discretionary Pay is not where the onion peeling stops. Obviously, spending all of it means you’ve saved $0. This figure needs to be pulled back more per your saving goals. Try to cut some money out of your Daily Discretionary Pay to create your Daily Allowance. This could be $30/day, or this could be $300/day. The model looks very different for everyone (even at similar ages and gross incomes), as everyone deducts different amounts from their paycheck – some save more for retirement, others not so much, and all of us have differing levels of Monthly Fixed Expenses. In Excel, start your tracking like this: 1. Cell A1 (Type your Start Date) 2. Cell B1 (Type your Daily Allowance) 3. Cell C1 (Type your Total $ Spent on Start Date) 4. Cell D1 (Type “= B1 – C1” to get your Profit or Loss on Start Date) 5. Repeat same for A2, B2, C2 (this is for Day 2) 6. Cell D2 (Type “= D1 + (B2 – C2)” to assure that Daily Allowance for Day 2 incorporates your results from Start Date) 7. Drag Cell D2 downward to continue on the formula. Test this out for at least 2 months! No need for more. It may sound tedious, but these 2 months will yield a pretty good representation of what your overall lifestyle looks like in a given year.

NOW WHAT? If your Daily Allowance is too low to manage (in total honesty) and you’re being frugal but still running negative numbers, it means that you’re overextended on your Monthly Fixed Expenses. Most people have problems saving because we have shopaholic tendencies – but the truth is that a lot of us really do try to be good with our habits, but are still overextended because we are committed to too many things. Rent/ mortgages are the largest ticket item on Monthly Fixed Expenses. Sure, you love your apartment and can’t move, but perhaps you need to sacrifice a little on your car. Living in a higher-end space means you might need to consider a cheaper car lease once you’re up for a new one. Think about what is really needed. Ditch a subscription or two – ditch the cable and stream shows to your TV for much less money – choose a new gym, and stop paying one that is overpriced. Once you have a few back to back days of successes, your Daily Allowance will build up nicely. Seeing this grow will help you justify buying something that would not have been as smart a purchase without a sufficient Daily Allowance. E.g.: Your Daily Allowance is $80, and you spend on average, $40 for 5 consecutive days in a row. Now, your Daily Allowance tomorrow just rose to $200, and you can spend that on that pair of shoes you’ve really wanted because you earned it. Conversely, say you had a busy week where you spent a lot more than you wanted to – and your Daily Allowance drops into the negatives. When this happens, don’t abandon the experiment. It requires patience, and after you follow back with several good days, it will revert positive again. Also, you need to exclude really big expenses that are data outliers (like 10 day vacation to Europe, or anything that will throw your calculations so far into the negatives, the experiment becomes moot). As these expenses do not represent your core behavior on a day to day basis, they should be viewed as savings based (outside the scope of this experiment). This experiment documents your normal lifestyle. We would love to hear how this experiment works for you! Head over to @mollymymag on Facebook and Instagram to share.

‘Tis the season for lots and lots of baking, and eating, and repeating! And while fall is definitely a season everyone likes to indulge in, the one thing we love most is sharing recipes that you can enjoy, without having to neglect that healthy lifestyle. Thanks to our friend and sweets expert, Lauren Lowstan of A Sweet Savory, we have some yummy recipes to share that would stand out at any feast (a couple even include protein! That’s right, protein.)! We’re using some of our favorite ingredients in these recipes: coconut milk, coconut sugar, apples, almond flour, and of course, pumpkin! Read on for all the delicious (and nutritious!) details.

WHOLE WHEAT APPLE PULL-APART BREAD Makes 1 (9x5”) loaf

in g re d ie n ts

Dough ¾ cup coconut milk ¼ cup water ¼ cup coconut oil 1 egg 3 cups whole wheat flour 2 ¼ Tsp. yeast ¼ cup coconut sugar ½ Tsp. salt Apple Filling 1 apple, peeled and chopped 1 Tbsp. coconut oil 2 Tbsp. coconut sugar 1/2 Tsp. cinnamon Pinch of salt Filling ½ cup coconut oil, melted 1 cup coconut sugar 1 Tbsp. cinnamon Glaze 2 Tbsp. coconut oil, melted ¾ cup organic powdered sugar ½ Tsp. maple extract ¼ Tsp. vanilla extract 1 Tbsp. coconut milk

d i re c t i o n s 1. Heat the coconut milk, water and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl for 45 seconds. You want it to be lukewarm to the touch and no hotter than 105 degrees. 2. In a standing mixer bowl, fitted with a dough hook, add the flour, yeast, salt and coconut sugar. Mix ingredients. 3. Now add in the warmed milk mixture and egg. Knead the dough on medium speed for about 7 minutes, or until the dough turns into a smooth dough ball. 4. Add the dough ball to a well-oiled large bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rise for 1 hour. 5. While the dough is rising, make the apple filling. 6. Combine all apple filling ingredients in a small saucepan, set over medium heat. Cook the apples for 5 minutes, until tender and caramelized. 7. Once your dough is done rising, roll it out onto a floured work surface into a large rectangle, about 12" x 20". Smear melted coconut over the whole rectangle, and sprinkle evenly with coconut sugar and cinnamon. 8. Sprinkle apple pieces evenly over cinnamon sugar mixture. Lightly press the apple pieces into the dough. 9. Slice your rectangle into 6 even strips (the long way). Then slice 4 even strips the other way. 10. Stack the 6 pieces on top of each other (you'll have 4 piles of 6 stacked high). 11. Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray and line with a piece of parchment paper. Then add in your pieces of dough to the loaf pan. They should fill up the whole pan. 12. Cover your pan with plastic wrap, and let rise for another 30 minutes. Your bread should double in size. 13. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, until the top is a nice, golden brown. 14. Let the loaf cool completely before removing from the pan. Once it's cooled, pull your loaf out with the parchment paper. 15. To make the glaze, combine all ingredients in a small glass bowl and whisk until there are no lumps. Make sure to keep the glaze covered while you wait to use or the top will crust over. Once you are ready to use, microwave the glaze for 15 seconds right before you're about to drizzle it. This helps to thin out the glaze. Pour generously all over the top of the loaf.

In a small bowl, whisk together brown rice flour, cornstarch, salt, baking powder, and xanthan gum. Set aside until ready to use. 3. In a bowl of a standing mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the eggs and sugar until creamy and doubled in size (about 4 minutes). 4. Add ½ the dry ingredients and beat for a few seconds. 5. Add in the coconut milk, coconut oil and vanilla. Mix for a few seconds. 6. Add in the rest of the dry ingredients and fall sprinkles, and mix until there are no white streaks remaining (about 30 seconds). 7. Divide the batter evenly among the 3 pans and bake until cooked through (about 30 minutes). Use a toothpick to check to see if the cake is done. 8. Once cool enough to handle, pop the cakes out, wrap them in plastic wrap, and place them in the refrigerator or freezer until completely hardened.

*You can find this at Whole Foods or other specialty grocery stores.

6 cups organic powdered sugar 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract ½ cup almond milk ½ cup fall colored sprinkles Gel food coloring: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple Edible silver leaf

Frosting 9. In a bowl of a standing mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the shortening and half the powdered sugar until creamy (about 3 minutes. 10. Add in the milk and vanilla, and then the rest of the powdered sugar. 11. Beat on low speed at first (so the sugar doesn't go everywhere!). 12. Turn up the speed to medium, and beat until light and fluffy (about 5 minutes).

Assembly 13. On a cake turntable, place one layer of cake onto a cake plate. Pipe the vanilla buttercream on top of the entire first layer, and sprinkle the top with fall sprinkles. Repeat this process until you have 3 layers of cake stacked. Add a small amount of frosting to the top and sides of the cake and smooth out the frosting with an offset spatula. The cake will have a naked feel (this is just the crumb coat layer). Place the cake in the refrigerator until the outside of the cake is completely chilled. 14. Once chilled, place your cake back onto the turntable. Add the rest of the buttercream into a large piping bag and pipe a small amount of frosting across the entire cake, top and sides. Smooth out the tops and sides with an offset spatula and cake smoother. Once you've frosted your cake to your liking, place the cake in the refrigerator to chill. 15. Divide the rest of your buttercream into 6 small bowls. Color each into darker fall hues. Add each colored icing into its own small piping bag, and cut the tips off of each one. 16. Take your cake out of the refrigerator and place back onto the turntable. Starting with one color, add tiny dabs of buttercream all over the cake (don't forget the top). With a small offset spatula, swipe the dab of buttercream into a small streak. 17. Continue with each of the colors until you have a nice sweeping motion across your cake. If you find you have blank spaces, fill them up with the colors of your choosing. 18. With a paintbrush, add in pieces of silver leaf around the cake to give it an even more festive feel!

A tradition is something that’s been shared from one year to the next, but it’s important to remember that all traditions started somewhere, and there’s always room to create new ones. Whether with family, or friends, you can expand an idea and even stray from past traditions to make new memories! To us, it’s all about who you’re spending time with; never what you’re doing. But the memories are still being shaped in the process. This season, we planned a new tradition: a post-Thanksgiving leftover brunch! There’s nothing quite as delicious as those feast leftovers, but have you ever thought to host a little something the morning after to keep the joyous times in full swing? Maybe you have, maybe you haven’t — either way, we’re here to help you get a little creative! You can even make this potluck-style and ask attendees to bring a (leftover) dish. Instead of simply serving up the same ‘ol stuff, try utilizing some other ingredients (and a new recipe or two to break it up) to create a thankful feast (again), with much less work than the night prior! Most of the hard work is behind you, but to help with all the other steps, we’re sharing some recipes to inspire a little change, and new tradition!

you’ll love what’s on the menu...

Cranberry Walnut BREAD

(GLUTEN-FREE, DAIRY-FREE) Dough: ¾ cup coconut milk ¼ cup water ¼ cup coconut oil ½ Tsp. orange zest 1 egg 3 cups gluten-free, all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp. xanthan gum 2 ¼ Tsp. yeast ¼ cup coconut sugar ½ Tsp. salt Filling: 1 ½ cups cranberry sauce ⅓ cup chopped walnuts

Directions: 1. Heat the coconut milk, water and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for about 45 seconds (or heat in a pan, on the stove). You want it to be lukewarm to touch and no hotter than 105 degrees. 2. In a bowl of a standing mixer, fitted with a dough hook, add the flour, yeast, salt and coconut sugar. Mix to combine. 3. Add in the warmed milk mixture, orange zest and egg. Knead the dough on medium speed for about 7 minutes, or until the dough turns into a smooth dough ball. 4. Add the dough ball to a well-oiled large bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rise for one hour. 5. Once your dough is done rising, roll it out onto a floured work surface into a large rectangle, about 12”x18". 6. Spread the cranberry sauce over the surface, leaving ½" margin along all sides. Sprinkle with the walnuts. 7. Starting with the long side, roll the dough up like you would cinnamon rolls. Pinch the seams together. 8. Using a sharp knife, cut down the center of the roll. Leave about 1" at the top uncut. 9. Proceed to braid the two pieces of dough together by lifting one piece over the other. Pinch the two end pieces together. 10. Carefully lift the braid and place it into a greased 9"x5" loaf pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise for one hour, or until doubled in size. 11. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 12. Bake the risen braid for about 45 minutes, until the top is nice and golden brown and the inside is baked through. You can check with a toothpick by making sure it's not still gooey inside. 13. Let the bread cool in the pan, until it's cool enough to handle. Run a paring knife along all the sides and flip upside down to pop out. Place right side up, and enjoy!

Sweet Potato BISCUITS (GLUTEN-FREE) Ingredients: 2 ½ cups gluten-free, all-purpose flour 2 ½ Tsp. xanthan gum 2 Tbsp. baking powder 1 Tsp. salt 6 Tbsp. coconut sugar ½ cup cold butter, cut into small cubes ¾ cup heavy cream, plus more for topping 1 ½ cups cooked, mashed sweet potatoes

Directions: 1. In a large bowl, add in the flour, xanthan gum, baking powder, salt and coconut sugar. Add in the cold, diced butter, and mix in with a fork or with your hands, until you have pea-sized crumbs. 2. Make a little hole in the center of the dry ingredients. Add in the heavy cream and mashed sweet potatoes and mix everything together (by hand) until incorporated. 3. Fold the dough, almost like folding a piece of paper. This will create flaky layers in the biscuits. 4. On a lightly floured surface, press the dough out until it's about 1" thick (you can do this by hand). 5. Cut the dough into circle shapes. If you don't have a round cookie cutter, then cut into small squares. 6. Place your biscuits onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and place into the freezer to chill. 7. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 8. Once your oven is preheated, take your biscuits out of the freezer. Brush the tops with a little heavy cream. 9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until they've puffed up nicely and are light brown on the bottom. Note: you can use leftover mashed sweet potatoes, or make them specifically for this recipe. If you don’t have leftover mash, here’s how make them for the recipe: 1. Prick 2 sweet potatoes with a fork all over. Place in microwave and cook until softened. Alternatively, cook in oven wrapped in foil. Set aside to cool. 2. Once cooled, cut in half, scrape the insides out and mash with a fork. Reserve 1 ½ cups for the recipe.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE

GHEE BUTTER! How delicious is a meal that you spent hours cooking and putting your all into? There’s nothing better than sitting down to eat with your friends, family, or maybe a special someone, and having them bite into food you’ve so passionately created. But with that passion, comes the amount of time you spent in the kitchen. And sometimes, we just don’t have hours in the day to spend working on one meal. So what’s the alternative? Just as delicious, but much simpler, we introduce you to: sheet pan recipes!

We continue to hear about these easy-to-make sheet pan meals and the more we look into the benefits, the more we realize this really is the go-to way to create meals when you’re in a rush – or if you’re just looking to enjoy a nice dinner that didn’t take you a half a day to make! What we really love about this discovery is how healthy it can be. There’s no better time than fall to put those delicious seasonal vegetables to use and create a filling and hearty meal anyone can enjoy. But the best part about these dishes? The clean up! You only have one pan that needs washing and you’re done.

60

We do have a secret ingredient however, making our sheet pan recipes unique. You haven’t truly enjoyed a meal unless you’ve used ghee butter. Also known as clarified butter, we opt for ghee in the kitchen for a number of reasons. First, it tastes just like butter, but is actually called the “better butter.” Ghee is cooked longer than other butters, so the water and milk fats have been removed, allowing the ghee to have a higher smoke point (or the amount of time it can be heated before smoking). Because of the higher smoking point, ghee is actually healthier and does not possess any lactose or casein – making it safe for anyone who is lactose intolerant as well. And it’s nutrient-rich, full of omega fatty acids, vitamin K, and medium and short chain fatty acids.

Ghee butter can be used in so many ways — you can add it into your coffee (yep, that’s right!), baked goods, spread it on a piece of toast, and so much more. We have artisanal food brand, Fourth and Heart to thank for introducing us to this yummy and healthy butter. Based in Los Angeles, California, Fourth and Heart is on a mission to “modernize ancient pantry food staples starting with a line of grass-fed flavored pure spreadable butters known as ‘ghee’.” They’ve introduced us to so many different flavors (Original, California Garlic and Himalayan Pink Salt — plus, more!), and each enhance the flavors of our recipes. This fall, use your powers to bring others up. We are experiencing tough times in our country; in our world. You can help by injecting each situation with your bright optimism! SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

Influenced by Six of Pentacles Music: “Crystal Ball” by Emil & Friends

Influenced by Eight of Swords Music: “Sing” by Ed Sheeran

Synergy is the word for fall, for you, Libra. Collaborate! Combine forces! Give to others and let them give back to you. You will find that at this time, you’ll run into old friends or meet new ones and automatically see how you can help one another. The best thing you can do is wake up and decide that's what you want for yourself: a life combining your talents and your relationships. Then trust that inner guidance when you’re ready to join forces. Motto: “Every morning when I get up, the first thing I decide is: what do I want? Misery? Blissfulness? What am I going to choose today? And it happens that I always choose blissfulness. It is my choice. It is my life.” - Abdullah

Scorpio, it’s time to marinate and marry the ideas in your head. You’re getting hits on what you’re creating. Start writing down your thoughts, your dreams, and even your silly brainstorms. It’s all coming together. You may also begin to see the things you need to let go. Get out of your own way and allow time for it to make sense. Stop with the negative mind tricks you keep playing on yourself. Write it down, then let it go. Go sing karaoke or take a painting class – anything to get out of your head. This fall, you’re beginning to realize your aspirations and how you can express your inner resources. You can create miracles now – so what kind do you plan to impart on the world? Motto: “To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one's self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laugh with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived – this is to have succeeded.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

TAURUS

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

Now is the time to connect to your heart and hear what it’s telling you. Aquarius, this fall is about feeding your soul. You have some big goals and manifestations in the works. Go buy flowers to brighten up your home or office. Get a plant that will purify your breath to make you your best. You should look at ways to share your joy. Have a dinner party! Plan a weekend away with your lover. Talk about expanding your family with (ahh!) a baby? Set intentions that make success out of love and family. Motto: “I believe that being successful means having a balance of success stories across the many areas of your life. You can’t truly be considered successful in your business life if your home life is in shambles.” - Zig Ziglar

You are moving and clearing some big stuff this fall, Gemini! You are seeing who you really are; who you really want to be! And you’re starting to see, that in order to be the person you want to be, you have to let go of things that you may not want to right at this moment. Do you have friends who may not fit into the life you want for yourself ? Have you noticed you’ve been stuck in some sort of gossip or recurring unhealthy situation that you know you could easily stop? You’ll start seeing in others the things that you do or don’t want for yourself. Take notice and don't ignore it. I don’t have to spell it out for you – you already know. You’ll be surprised to see that you will be the example! By shifting yourself, you’re going to see others follow suit. Be the leader – even if it’s not deliberate. You are seeing flashes of insight and before you get the clear answer, you’re going to feel confused and frustrated. But if you can look at these flashes as sparks to help guide you towards that clarity, then you’ll discover how open and patient you can be. Allow yourself to get lost in the cerebral spark.
