The TCFF: Celebrating 10 Years of Just Great Movies
Over the past decade, the Traverse City Film Festival has become inexorably linked to the magic and beauty of summertime in T.C. Watching classic movies outdoors under the stars, clinking drinks with Hollywood luminaries at festival parties, attending premieres and being treated to some of the best indie, foreign and documentary flicks of the year—it just wouldn’t be summer without these delights. This year, the TCFF celebrates its 10th anniversary—and, while its original mission of “Just Great Movies” remains the same, this year’s festival promises to be the best yet. To commemorate this major milestone, the TCFF staff, supporters and volunteers are rolling out some extra-special events in addition to the movies, live music and festival parties that have always been staples of the festival experience. For starters, there’s “TCFF Around the Bay,” a cinematic tour of six films shown at six different theaters in villages around the North, from Manistee to Petoskey (see page F3 for details). There’s also a brand-new venue—The Buzz—showing free movies all day long throughout the festival (page F3). Oscar-winning
filmmaker and festival founder Michael Moore will be celebrating his own personal milestone (his not-so-secret 60th birthday) at a special bash—and you’re invited (page F7). The Open Space will bring back its most popular classic movies from the past nine years, and to top that, there’ll be movies shown on a boat in the middle of the bay (page F3). Of course, all of this will be happening in one of the most lovely settings imaginable, in a city home to both pristine beaches and hip boutiques, plus a lauded local food scene that just won’t quit. Be sure to immerse yourself in all of what’s happening here during TCFF week, using this guide to navigate everything from the live music performances (page F7) to the best spots to grab a craft brew before the next flick (page F11). TCFF Around The Bay
Northwest Michigan’s coastal towns are home to some of the most charming small-town movies houses left in this country—and Michael Moore and the Traverse City Film Festival want you to enjoy them. So, beginning July 20th at the newly renovated Vogue Theatre in Manistee, a TCFF film will be shown in six different harbor-town movie palaces on six consecutive nights the week prior to the TCFF. PARTIES The full TCFF experience is not just about the movies—it’s the parties, too, where you can get to know the vibrant community that, for a decade, has helped make this festival such a success. The Opening Night Party (July 29, 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., on Front between Park and Cass) kicks things off in style, with a red carpet, twinkling lights and a glam “vintage Hollywood” theme. Mark a big birthday milestone for festival founder Michael Moore at Michael’s Super Sweet 60th (Aug. 1, 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., at 201 E. Front), where there’ll be cocktails, a food truck and, of course, birthday cake. The star-studded Filmmaker Party (Aug. 2, 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., at the corner of State and Park) has been a big draw since the festival’s inception; new as of last year, the TCFF Closing Night Bash (Aug. 3, 7 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., at the Open Space Park) is a family-friendly, free event open to all. The three other parties—the Friends Only Screening Party (July 26), Founders Party (July 27), and Volunteer Party (Aug. 4)—are exclusively open to folks involved with the festival, but it’s not too late to participate! Sounds of the TCFF
Movies may be the main attraction here, but since the very first TCFF a decade ago, live music has been an integral part of the festival experience. “In terms of the number of acts and performances, it’s the largest music festival in the Midwest,” says Deb Lake, TCFF’s executive director. In keeping with the fest’s musical traditions, there’ll be performances before every single movie, by local favorites as well as acts from outside the region (previous years have seen musicians from as far away as Israel and Buenos Aires), ranging from folk to classical to pop. A few of this year’s most anticipated artists include the beloved local songstress Claudia Schmidt; the up-and-coming chamber group Asylum Quartet; indie folk-rock duo The Bergamot; and award-winning Detroit-based blues artist Carl Henry. You can also catch great tunes each night 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Open Space, all day long at the Clinch Park Music Stage, and at all the Film Fest parties.

West End Beach: A quiet spot just west of downtown for a swim or quick snooze on your beach towel. On Grandview Parkway at Division Street.
Traverse City’s cross-town trails and bike-friendly streets make getting around a breeze. For a sweet, scenic cruise, take a spin along the TART Trail, a 10.5-mile corridor winding through historic downtown neighborhoods and along scenic West Bay. On the way, you’ll pass beaches, shops, nature preserves, a state park and other attractions. Find a trailhead at West End Beach, located at Grandview Parkway and Division. Bonus: The TART Trail connects to the 17-mile Leelanau Trail, a paved, non-motorized path that heads north to Suttons Bay on an easy and pretty pastoral pedal. Clinch Park: TC’s most popular beach has 1,500 sandy feet of frontage on West Grand Traverse Bay. Picnic tables, lifeguards and a brand-new splash pad for kids. Get there via the pedestrian tunnel at the foot of Cass Street.

Traverse City State Park: A quarter-mile of beautiful beach (with campground), just two miles east of downtown. 1132 US31 N. Haserot Beach Park: Escape the crowds via a mini-roadtrip 15 miles up Old Mission Peninsula to this slice of sand on East Grand Traverse Bay. Located at the end of Swaney Road, east off M37. Bryant Park: The enormous beach here offers plenty of space to sprawl out, plus a playground, picnic tables and charcoal grills. At Garfield Avenue and Peninsula Drive. East Bay Park: This locals-only hideout has a shallow shoreline, making it ideal for young families. Located at the foot of East Front Street where it meets East Bay. Paddle: On still summer mornings, glassy Grand Traverse Bay just begs to be explored via kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard. Whatever your paddling pleasure, you can find rentals at Wet Mitten (101 PARK ST.); The River (161 E. GRANDVIEW PKWY); 231 Outfitters (221 W. GRANDVIEW PKWY). Traverse City Tall Ship Co.: This 114-foot replica of an 1800s schooner seems to have sailed straight out of a Great Lakes history book.
