Talking about the book

Support the students in activating their prior knowledge by playing a “What am I?” game (juego de adivinanzas).

Say: ¿Qué soy? Soy un animal. Soy un anfibio. Me parezco un lagarto pero yo soy similar a una rana. Comienzo mi vida en el agua, donde respiro a través de los pulmones. A medida que crezco, cambio. Students could take turns reading a page each in a small group. Encourage them to read fluently. Say: Cuando lean, traten de hacer que su voz suene fluida.

Have students read the book to partners. Encourage them to read expressively. Talk about how the main character’s voice would sound when she says, “Entonces Isabela se puso de pie para hablar de su salamandra. Word work Phonics Write the word cigüeña on the board. Discuss with students the definition, pronunciation, and spelling of this word.

Have students find examples of “ge” and “gue.” Have each student turn and talk to a partner, saying new sentences that use each word correctly.

Exploring words Ask pairs of students to find and list words in the book used to describe salamanders (e.g. asombrosos, anfibios, brillantes, pequeñas, grandes). Word work Phonics Write the word entusiasmado on the board. Review what a diphthong is. Show them the correct pronunciation of this word. Ask students to locate in the text other diphthongs (diptongos crecientes) with the following vowel groups: ie, ia, io, ue, ua, uo (pudiera, ansias, patio, suerte, cuando). Pronounce the words with the students. Sort them according to the spelling. Have each student turn and talk to a partner, saying new sentences that use each word correctly.

Exploring words Ask: ¿En qué tiempo verbal está escrita la historia? Draw out that it is written in the past tense. Ask students to find three words that show this (e.g. decía, susurré, cepillaba). Make a class list.

Ask students to choose a word from the list and write it in three sentences using a different tense for each (e.g. “Yo cepillaba el pelo de mi perro. Estoy cepillando… Cepillaré …)

Writing Ask: ¿En qué se asemeja tener un perro a tener una salamandra como mascota? ¿En qué se diferencian? Discuss this with the students. Students could then use a Venn diagram to write answers to these questions.

about salamanders. Give students a five-minute time limit to write their lists. Invite each pair of students to share their facts. Compile a group list.
