Q1. How is the place where I live similar to one of the places in The Land Where I Live? How is it different?

How to search the internet 1 Keep your request short. Fewer words will give a more accurate search.

Q2. What is similar and what is different about living in the polar, tropical, and temperate places in The Land Where I Live? Q3. Choose a place that has a very different climate or environment (e.g. living at high altitude, living in a desert, living on the sea) and investigate the questions.

Conclusion

Part 4 Organize, analyze, and interpret data

No climate is perfect. There are good things and bad things no matter where you live in the world. Even a warm, comfortable climate can have seasonal floods or wildfires, which people get used to and prepare for.

1. Look over the information you have gathered and the patterns you have found.

Humans are good at adapting to the climate in which they live. That is why we can survive in so many different places in the world.

Write some statements about your investigation. Try to write one sentence that covers the information in one part of your work.

Data Chart for The Land Where I Live.

For example: The things that people do in different climates are shaped by the weather.

2. Search for other patterns.

Having fun The first snow usually falls in October. It snows until spring. There is always snow on the ground until the summer. Sometimes on the weekend, my cousin takes my brother and me for rides on his snowmobile.

At home, we have TV and computer games. At my school we have two indoor playgrounds, a rock-climbing wall, and a big gymnasium where we can practice basketball or play games. Our town has a heated swimming pool and an ice-skating rink. My cousins play ice hockey. When I’m older, I want to play, too.

Did you know? Independence Day is a big celebration in Utqiaġvik. There is a Fourth of July parade and lots of food. After that, there are games and contests like blanket tossing and seal boat racing, followed by traditional dances to drum music. On New Year’s Day in January, when it’s dark all the time, there are fireworks in the middle of the day.

The rainforest, my home

A village on stilts I live with my mother and two older brothers in a small timber house in our village. My brothers work with my father, who goes into the forest and cuts down trees. They sell the timber to other families for their houses. My mother, aunt, and grandma grow vegetables, which they sell at the market in a nearby town.

Look over all of the information that you have gathered in your investigation.

Our houses are made of wood and are on stilts. The stilts keep us off the wet ground and away from rainforest animals that might want to come inside. We have a big covered platform at the back of our house where we sit when it rains. There are big windows, but they don’t have glass in them because it doesn’t get cold and we like the air coming through our houses. Most houses have roofs that are covered in dried grass. The grass helps muffle the sound of the heavy rain falling on the roof.

Content-based Learning

After you gather general information, you can then search for houses, schools, work,

You may want to choose one or more of these questions to investigate

food, clothing, and dangers in the place you are investigating.

2 Choose exactly what you want. For example: Arctic Circle Climate

Temperate climate

San Diego County is in southwestern California. It has long, warm or hot summers and short, cool winters when most of the rain falls. Because of the dry, hot weather in summer, there is often danger of wildfires.

17

4 Use the plus sign (+). If you add a plus sign (+) between words, the internet will search for all the words. For example: migrate+birds+whales+mammal

25/3/21 2:04 pm

Tips

5 Use a minus sign (–) to show words you do not want to appear in your results. For example: if you search for burrowing animals and do not want mammals in your search: burrowing animals–mammals

Working with a partner or in small groups makes investigating more fun.

The Land Where I Live

You can share what you already know about any of these questions.

The Land Where I Live

Climates at the equator

Most areas that lie on or near the equator have a climate that is always warm. There are few changes in temperature throughout the day and night. The sun rises and sets at the same time every day of the year.

3 Use quotes. Double quotes around a set of words tell the search engine to use those exact words in that exact order without any change. For example: “Arctic Circle Climate”

A stand-alone addition to Flying Start to Literacy™ using the same best-practice instruction, WorldWise: Content-based LearningTM creates a powerful and effective learning culture. TM

WorldWise: Content-based Learning™ for Levels A–V (1–50)* span these developmental reading stages: Texts at this stage: • Establish a full range of concepts about print • Build comprehension and fluency through a range of reading strategies • Introduce academic vocabulary specific to science and social studies • Reinforce key vocabulary and concepts with picture glossaries

Content to engage readers Diversity of the world in which students live Graphic devices and striking photographs to support the content Research opportunities with Find Out More, Think About..., and Did You Know? Students will develop strategies and skills needed to read informational texts across a range of text types while simultaneously learning to become informational text writers.

After you gather general information, you can then search for houses, schools, work,

You may want to choose one or more of these questions to investigate

food, clothing, and dangers in the place you are investigating.

2 Choose exactly what you want. For example: Arctic Circle Climate

Temperate climate

San Diego County is in southwestern California. It has long, warm or hot summers and short, cool winters when most of the rain falls. Because of the dry, hot weather in summer, there is often danger of wildfires.

The Land Where I Live

The Land Where I Live

Content-based Learning
