Este es un libro de preguntas y respuestas sobre cuatro diferentes tipos de huevos y los animales que hay dentro de ellos. Describe lo que cada cría hace después de salir del cascarón.

Writing

With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear.

Introducing the book

As each student reads the text independently, monitor and support them where appropriate. If necessary, ask the students to stop reading and remind them to use the reading strategy you are focused on. Encourage students to use the photographs to gain extra information from the page. For example, on pages 6 and 7 you could ask: ¿Qué nos dicen estas fotografías de cómo nacen las aves? ¿Qué nos dicen de la forma en que comen estas aves pequeñas?

Activate students’ prior knowledge. Ask: ¿Qué animales nacen de huevos? ¿Qué saben sobre estos animales? ¿Alguna vez han visto cómo sale un animal del cascarón? ¿Nos puedes contar? Invite students to talk about this with a partner and then share their ideas with the group.

Provide each student with a copy of ¿Qué hay dentro de estos huevos? Say: Este libro se llama ¿Qué hay dentro de estos huevos? Habla sobre animales que nacen de huevos.

Have students turn to pages 2 and 3. Ask: ¿Qué animales podrían estar dentro de estos huevos? Invite students to share their ideas.

Have students browse through the book and look at the photographs.

Building vocabulary Ask: ¿Qué palabras o frases podríamos encontrar en un libro sobre animales que nacen de huevos? Have students talk to a partner and then share with the group. List the words on a chart and invite the students to make suggestions about what each word means. Where appropriate, have the students add a drawing to the words on the chart to make the meaning clear. Discuss each word as you list them on the chart. If necessary, introduce the content vocabulary and add these words to the list.

Introducing the reading strategy Say: Los buenos lectores usan tanto las palabras como las fotografías para obtener información. Have students look at the photograph on the front cover. Say: Hablen con su compañero sobre lo que ven en esta fotografía y qué información da sobre los huevos.

After reading Talking about the book Have students talk about the book. Encourage discussion by choosing questions that are appropriate for your students.

Reviewing the reading strategy Give positive feedback on the strategies the students used as they read the book. Say: Me gustó que hayas visto con atención las fotografías y me gustó que por eso me pudieras dar mucha información adicional.

Returning to the book

Writing

Provide multiple opportunities for the students to reread and interact with the book – with teacher support, with a partner, and independently. Choose activities that are appropriate for your students.

Modeled writing

Speaking and listening Have students sit knee-to-knee with a partner. One student is the “speaker,” and the other is the “listener.” Say: Díganle a su compañero todo lo que sepan sobre las aves pequeñas de este libro.

Students then change roles, and speak about a different animal from the book; the big bird (ostrich), turtle, and spider.

Vocabulary Write the words ave, tortuga, and araña on a chart. Say: Estos animales salen de huevos.

Now list the words semillas, insectos, gusanos, and algas on the chart. Read the words and then say: Esto es lo que comen los animales del libro después de salir del cascarón.

Model using two of the words from the chart in a sentence.

Forexample, say: Las crías de las aves comen gusanitos después de salir del cascarón.

Have students take turns saying words from the chart in a sentence to their partner.

Phonological awareness Turn to page 14 and point out the egg sac on the spider. Say: Este es un saco de huevos. Escuchen ahora con atención cuando digo las palabras “huevo” y “hay”. ¿Qué es similar en estas palabras? ¿Cuántos sonidos escuchan en “huevo”? /u/, /e/, /b/, /o/. Have students share their ideas. Repeat with the word “hay,” /a/, /i/. Draw out that the letter “h” does not make a sound.

Phonics Have students turn to pages 12-13. Say: Voy a leer la segunda oración. Quiero que escuchen con atención y me digan qué palabras tienen el sonido /b/: Hay tortugas dentro de estos huevos blancos. Ask: ¿Qué palabras tienen el sonido /b/?

Draw a two-column chart and label them with the words “huevo” and “blanco.” Say: Las letras “b” y “v” hacen el sonido /b/. Estas dos letras suenan igual. Ask: ¿Qué otras palabras conocemos con el sonido /b/? Write them in the appropriate column.

Speak aloud as you write on a large chart. Talk about the decisions you make as a writer. For example, you could say: Primero explico qué animal nace de huevos. Independent writing Ask students to talk to a partner about different animals that hatch from eggs. Have each student choose an animal to write about.

Sharing and presenting Have students take turns talking about their pictures and their writing. As students share, create a list of the animals they wrote about.

Discuss and draw out that after these babies hatch, they need to eat and drink to survive, and that some baby animals get help with this while others must survive all by themselves.
