New Beginnings Spring is a time for new beginnings. See what these seven members of the MY editorial staff think about our favorite time of year.

Steve Ragland

photographer

When I think spring, I think of new beginnings. There is something very inspirational about the rebirth that takes place in the spring, especially after a long Michigan winter. Not only is this a beautiful time for photography, but it’s a beautiful sort of “midpoint” to reflect upon the year thus far, revisit who I am and who I aspire to be—as both an artist and an individual—one day at a time.

My excitement over spring happens the first time chirping birds wake me up in the morning singing spring is here!!! The first thought that pops into my head, being a lover of style, is today I can ditch my winter boots, parkas, hats, and gloves. I can go outside and be inspired by the sunshine, bigger patches of green grass, fresh air, and smiles on people’s faces enjoying the same thing. Great energy plus feeling happy that Mother Nature has better weather in store for us equals fun spring fashion!!! Yay!

Angelique Gonzalez sales/ marketing

Whether it’s the blossom of a cherry tree, the subsequent fall colors, or the first snowfall of winter, my love for spring carries across the seasons. More than spring itself, it’s really the overall change of seasons that is my favorite. Each and every day marks the opportunity for a new beginning; the thaw of the Great Lakes is just one of nature’s many glorious expressions of this!

Last year around this time, I got engaged to my high school sweetheart. A few months lather, I graduated from MSU, and then we moved into a new apartment. I have a feeling that my life is going to continue with new beginnings for a while, and you know what? When you are surrounded by love and blessings, you can only be excited for the ride.

Spring is my opportunity every year to begin again. I take stock of the resolutions I made during the darkness of winter, and start the cleansing of all that has been pushed to the back. I open the doors and windows, get out of the house, off that couch, turn off the TV, and enjoy the world around me. Spring is the time to be open to all possibilities, more than opening your heart, you must open your mind as well to new experiences, new people, new possibilities!

The universe’s enduring covenant with our planet: the days lengthen thawing our cold bones. The primal buzz of spring arrives. The pungent scent of earth that accompanies muddy April rains guarantees our reunion with nature. It pledges hot days and warm sand between toes playing beach volleyball. Southern breezes push north vowing to return sounds of waves slapping against the hull of a sailboat heeled over on starboard tack breaking from shore. Spring is an ancient cosmic promise.

The windows are open with a gentle breeze wafting in the scents and presence of anticipation and renewal; vegetation is budding brining hints of color to a neutral landscape, and activity of all nature awakening after a winter respite. I relish in the hope this season brings—a peaceful excitement—a warm sun with a hint of crispness in the air. I find the spring season centering, bringing me back to the inspiration of nature to motivate me in any endeavor. It’s a reminder of creation, beckoning me to be creative. It’s like taking a big restorative stretch after a long winter’s slumber.

The secret to a rich life is to have more

beginnings than endings.

Dave Weinbaum

As a forty something woman, it almost seems absurd to start something new. Having no formal designing, writing, editing, photography, styling or sales experience did not deter me, because I am surrounded by so much talent. You will meet the contributors, the people who are the bones of this magazine in the contributors section of this issue. You will also meet my family, my circle of strength. Founded on faith, we are joined by love and kept by God. Everything I do, all the decisions I make are guided by faith. You will read a little about me, and you will see me at my best, the magic of hair and makeup! I am wearing clothing from Ann Normandy clothing line, founded by Kim Collins. Kim creates limited edition, one of a kind pieces made from vintage textiles. Collins uses her experience as a costume designer to create pieces that drape and hug a woman’s body. Her inspiration comes from 19th century French famers, using textiles made from flaxseed or hempseed—designed to last generations. Her 2015 line will be released this spring. In our Inspiring Women section, meet Mariama, and Beverly. Read how Mariama, a true survivor, began her life here in America. Her determination and spirit helped her survive getting caught in the middle of a brutal civil war in Sierra Leone. Beverly helps people to begin again, by providing them with tools and knowledge to conquer eating disorders. The MY makeover is a young mom, awaiting the birth of her second child, another new beginning, in need of some pampering. I have no bucket list, I try to live for today. I live by the quote, “when life knocks you down, roll over and look at the stars.” I believe the wealthiest inheritance I can leave my children is the example I set in my life. I hope my new beginning, or my latest leap of faith, will show this!

ask the expert By Holly CaSaroll

Q

My neck and chest look 10 years older than my face! What can I do?

Spring is here, and we can’t wear a turtle neck, so we best get moving to have a flawless look this season! We all have pet peeves, and this is a big one! Why look younger on just one area, when people can still tell your age below your jawline? You have to create harmony and look like the same person all around. This is also one of the top complaints woman have after having committed to reversing the signs of sun damage on their face. Don’t ever forget about your neck and chest, or anything else! Here is my easy breezy guide to having your neck and chest blossom like a flower for the spring and summer seasons:

MEDICAL PEELS

Professional dermatological peels can have a profound effect on the skin’s texture in this area by lifting off dead skin cells, stimulating cell turnover, and making the skin look like silk. Usually, a series of peels are recommended, or you can just do 1-2 deeper peels where the skin will have the side effect of peeling for a few days, but will have a faster and more profound effect.

COOLVIEW

laser shy, Limelight is a great option, as there is less swelling since it is less deep.

PERMEA

This fractional laser is fantastic for those individuals who have excessive pigment and sun damage in this area along with irregular texture. Usually 4 treatments spaced 2 weeks apart can make your chest look like a 20 year old. This particular laser wavelength is very attracted to our melanin, which is what gives us pigment, so it is preferred over other fractional lasers. Because of the luminosity, it gives the skin tone; this treatment is one of my favorites. The only limitation is it does not address redness.

ULTHERAPY

One of the most advanced vascular lasers in the world, this helps with the sun damage that leaves the neck and chest with redness, brown spots, and broken capillaries. With little to no downtime, and in just a 30 minute session, your skin tone can look more even in as little as a few weeks. Just don’t have this before a big event, as it makes the skin swollen immediately post treatment, and reds and browns look splotchy afterwards for 10 days or so. I usually recommend 2-3 treatments per area. For those a little

This is the only FDA cleared device to physically lift tissue, and the most remarkable non-invasive treatment to lift, next to surgery. Recently, the FDA cleared this treatment for vertical chest lines. I love how transforming this can be for a woman. You can get a neck lift in just over an hour, leave without downtime, and get rid of the lines on your chest. Just know that cumulative results present themselves at about three months. What is great about this treatment also is that you only need to do it once a year. Divorce Diaries

Seeing the Gift By Annette Benson

We have all been influenced by people in our lives. As a result, our paths have changed, relationships were born and ended, and tears were shed of joy and pain. When you reach that certain time in your life, divorce, illness, accomplishment, or because you are simply present, see the gift from those who have truly impacted your life. Thank them (maybe just in your head). You received a gift, intentional or not, that does not matter.

The one who would teach me not only about the practice of law, but about life. He helped me see my potential and build my confidence to become the lawyer and the woman I dreamed to be.

The advice was constant. He kept me on my toes and knew I was a like a sponge, eager to soak up his years of wisdom. This unconventional man, with his long curly hair, who said what he thought without the refrain of traditional expectations, this colorful one of a kind man, gave me the belief in myself that I could be myself— practice law while maintaining my strong sense of integrity, my distinct perspective, and my creative and unique approach. Mariama Conteh-Elliott “No matter what, people can cut off your hands, rape you, use you, but they can never take your mind and soul. Keep your shoulders high and never look back.” Mariama was 14 years old when she stood in line with the other children, waiting her turn to have her hands chopped off by The Revolutionary United Front during the Blood Diamond War. Her left hand was completely severed, her right hand hung by a few muscles and skin. Her aunt, using a broken bottle, conducted the final amputation. Mariama had to walk 30 miles to receive medical help; she spent three months in a refugee camp and one year in an amputee camp. During that time, she acquired a bone infection in her leg. In 2001, she came to the United States to get prosthesis limbs; by the time she arrived, she was only 80 pounds. Mariama and the other amputees spoke in front of Congress discussing the situation in Sierra Leone. Mariama was given asylum; returning back to her country meant she would be killed. “I want to be the voice of Sierra Leone. I know that’s is why God saved me and brought me here. “ At a Gift of Life fundraiser, she met Chad Everett, which lead to her adoption by Deannie and Clay Elliott. Living in a loving family provided her a secure future with opportunities. Mariama graduated from Baker College in 2014 and is currently pursing acting and modeling. She attributes her strength to God and the power of forgiveness. “The main thing is you have to forgive and move on; that’s not freeing the other person, that’s freeing yourself.”

Beverly Price “I want to help people. The most important [way to do] this is to have compassion.” Beverly’s grace stems from her personal experience with eating disorders in high school and college. She used the experience from her challenges as a pursuit to helping others, becoming a registered dietician and certified eating disorder specialist. “I reflect back to help me observe and make better choices. I know what they’re going through.” In her dedication to helping others, she founded the Inner Door, a center she runs in Royal Oak, with her husband David, focusing on progressive outpatient treatments including meal planning, skills groups, individual therapy, and yoga. “Yoga works because there is a science behind it, giving awareness, self-compassion, and self-love. It’s what clients with eating disorders need to get in touch with, combined with traditional therapy.” In her own pursuit for healing, Beverly became aware of the lack of resources in the area. She founded the Inner Door to offer clients a variety of programs suited to the individual to aid the healing process. “There is help out there, there are resources, and there is hope. No one has to struggle alone. Find the intervention that works for you, speaks to you, and is instrumental in your recovery. It’s not so much about degrees but about relationships” Beverly is committed to her work, but enjoys some time cuddling with her Bichon Jason or reading biographies. She says one of the greatest elements in therapy is compassion. “Understanding has to go beyond book knowledge, it’s about relationships…looking at the whole picture.” For more information about the Inner Door, visit innerdoor.org.

Light Body Lightworker and Ascension

By Judy Lipson

PART 2

Easing the process as you remember and become who you really are

I

t is no coincidence that you have chosen this time to be alive and that you are drawn to this article. Many are heeding the call to be authentic as we ascend to Light Body. Some might experience resistance, others will embrace the process fully, and you may be one of the many who falls somewhere in the middle of those two options. I hope that you had the opportunity to read Part One of Light Body, Lightworker and Ascension in the January/February edition of MY Magazine, where I explained the many conceptual and physical changes that are occurring. To review, your Ascension to Light Body involves an awakening to the memory of who you really are and a shifting of thoughts, emotions, and especially your physical body. I explained the concepts of Light Body (the infusion of light into your being), Lightworker (those that assist the healing of themselves, others, plants, animals, and Earth itself), and Ascension (the evolution toward full Light Body). Additionally, I discussed the signs that you are moving toward Light Body, including the tendency to question the status quo, personal, societal, and systems, as well as 24 | MY Magazine

the tendency to see the world in dualities (separateness) that we have believed to be truths. These include either/ or, separation/unity, and you/me as they apply to the many aspects of life. Additionally, I discussed a coming awareness of life’s paradoxes and their movement toward balance. These included light/shadow, divine masculine/ divine feminine, and the transition to oneness (unity) while maintaining individuality. Ascension engages all the aspects of your being: one’s emotions, thoughts, body, and the energetic source within you. These aspects vary in ease or difficulty. In Part One, I explained how thoughts, energy, and beliefs typically shift comparatively easy. Emotions can be more challenging, so I explained how to ease this process. Shifting at the physical level can be difficult because of the density of the human body. There is a tendency to label these difficulties with what our societal model calls symptoms. This is most disconcerting when you don’t know what is happening, so I recommend that before continuing you read Light Body, Lightworkers and Ascension: Part One for a more complete understanding.

www.mymagazineoakland.com

Light energy comes into your energetic field and then enters the physical body, which, due to its dense nature, can have difficulty adapting comfortably to this process. Rather than assuming the western model of symptom/ illness, allow me to provide a different paradigm for what you may be experiencing so that you can support yourself as you experience the process of ascension to minimize your “symptoms” and ease the process: Your physical body is now, quite literally, trying to move at the speed of the light with which it has been infused. Shifts happen more easily when light moves light, but we believe our bodies to be solid. Though the physical body is carbonbased, Dr. Candace Pert and Dr. James Oschman have explained that we have an inner matrix of liquid crystals (i.e. fascia/connective tissue) that allows for extraordinarily fast and complete communication throughout your entire system. Not only is your body becoming more crystalline, your body is trying to bring all the parts to equal expansiveness. This is the Ascension to Light Body within your physical body. What does this process feel like? When you bring your thoughts into a new paradigm, which may even include reading this article, or release old emotional patterns, or come in contact with new or rapidly moving energies, you may feel the response of your physicality trying to shift. In the old paradigm, these were called symptoms; in this new paradigm, it is known as processing, and may include the following: •

Fuzzy thinking, memory issues, distractibility, not thinking straight.

Exhaustion (a sleeping body can process much more rapidly when the conscious mind gets out of the way).

Increased sensitivity of the five senses.

Major toxic releases—odors, hives, excrement changes, rashes, itching.

Frontal headaches due to pituitary gland changes.

Back of head (occipital area) headaches due to changes to the pineal gland.

Nausea, fever without being sick, palpitations, anxiety.

Pain or rashes that move without explanation.

Evaluations by physicians without finding a cause.

Thankfully there are many things that you can do to support your body: •

Limit caffeine and sugars.

Rest, hydrate, move (exercise, dance, walk, etc.).

Receive energy work: Reiki, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, Quantum Healing.

Get body work: massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, acupressure.

Stretch and shake the body to realign the liquid crystals.

Replenish electrolytes (i.e.: EmergenC, Airborne).

Epsom salts baths.

Flower essences (i.e. Flower Essence Society; Bach Flower Remedies).

Reduce stress, balance time, delegate, release control, empower yourself.

Set proper verbal, physical, and energetic boundaries— see Energetic Cleansing (May/June 2014) and Setting Boundaries (Nov/Dec 2013).

Be present, live in the now.

Detoxify your body with the five elements:

You may even note different reactions to medications, lack of responsiveness to former treatment modalities, or changes in dietary or exercise needs.

may notice the following:

AIR–movement through air, oxygen therapy, slow deep breathing FIRE–heat, sun; sauna, observing candlelight and fireplaces WATER–bathe, hydrate, observe water EARTH–mud or Epsom salt bath, herbs, healing with crystals ETHER–essential oils, flower essences •

Use all 5 simultaneously: i.e. Take a hot bath with Epsom salts (with essential oils sprinkled on them) and breathe deeply.

The following will support your entire self as it shifts to Light Body: •

Look at recurrent emotional patterns symbolically and deal with them.

Address your triggers, issues, and fears, and remember that grace (the helping hand that lifts you up) will help ease your process.

Practice unconditional love and forgiveness of yourself and others.

Ask spirit and your highest wisdom to guide you.

Trust your innate wisdom and embrace your intuition.

Follow a daily spiritual practice (prayer, meditation, art, music, communing with nature—anything that puts you in the zone).

Practice a nightly review, without judgment and with compassion, to identify what you did right as well as how you could respond differently in a future time.

You are more than your body, so ground more expansively by multidimensional grounding: become aware of your whole energy field, and from that expansiveness ground down to Earth and up to source.

Living authentically and in congruence with your truest self is the essence of being who you really are. You will joyfully exhibit honesty, compassion, and integrity. Additionally, you 26 | MY Magazine

An awareness of multiple dimensions at once.

A greater ability to heal self or others.

No fear; less attachment to emotional hooks; an ability to face the old fears more easily.

Awareness of sacred geometry and energetic body changes

Increased intuition.

You can feel your energy “go out” to others without feeling personally depleted.

You are more willing to set aside judgments and be in harmony.

You can dwell in unconditional love during conflicts and stay out of judgment and fear.

Others will see your light and be awakened.

This is a journey that each of us with awareness is taking now. Each has a different role in the multiverse and may experience the process of ascension differently, but our bodies, spirit, soul, Earth, and even the cosmos, are ascending. Though this is a rewarding journey, there can be moments of uneasiness as you struggle to understand the larger context, may be resistant to healing old wounds, or don’t know how to adequately support your body’s changes. Consider journaling, reading, attending workshops, and joining or creating a group of like-minded individuals. It may be essential to seek a professional who understands ascension to Light Body to help you clear old patterns and triggers. This person can hold an energetically safe place while you process your more challenging personal issues. This may be a Lightworker who understands the process of evolution into Light Body, and who has expertise in spiritual guidance, energy work, and/or body work. Consider the following as you do so: You don’t need to remember, you just need to release. You don’t need to know, you just need to let go. It is no coincidence that you are alive now. Be who you really are and joyfully embrace your place in the multiverse. This article is for informational purposes and is not meant to replace medical care. Danielle Andresen was overdue when it came to being pampered. She said, “Matter of fact, I’ve never been pampered.” Her mom owns a salon so she never went to anyone else. Danielle felt she was up for a change. She’s a mother to an 18 month old little boy and is expecting her new baby in June. When she saw the opportunity for a MY makeover she sent an email and asked to be considered as a candidate to sit in Yiannis’ chair. We honored her request! The results are spectacular!

Danielle has very thick hair. She was wearing it long, below her shoulders, and told me that she often just pulled it back into a ponytail. She also had some dull highlights. I changed her color to a medium brown, added some golden highlights, and also mixed in a few strands of mahogany highlights to add more life to her hair. I texturized her hair quite a bit since it is so thick and cut it evenly on both sides. I styled it with a low part on one side which allowed her hair to fall across her forehead to give her a super sexy look. The cut also allows her to part her hair higher on the other side to create a totally different, choppy bob style. Danielle’s appearance changed from nondescript to sophisticated before my eyes, and she definitely felt like a new woman! ~ Hair by Yiannis Karimalis 248.931.8722, www.yiannishair.com Danielle is a busy, working mom and she explained to us that she doesn’t have much time in her day to devote to hair and makeup. I was thrilled to show her a makeup look that was really glamorous and different from what she would normally do. I defined her eyes using charcoal and gray shadows to really make them pop. I wanted a lip color dramatic enough to balance the eyes, but also modern and bright for spring so I chose a cool fuchsia color. Since the eyes and lip were both strong, I decided to keep the skin very natural with barely a hint of blush. I added a touch of bronzer for a bit of warmth. She was super excited and ready for a night on the town with her hubby to show off her modern, gorgeous look! ~ Make up by Aferdita Qafa, 248.877.8006

Expanding Perspectives Inside and Out By Elaine Grohman

I

love to clean windows… really, I do. I get prompted, nudged really, by the streaks and small bits of dust—the smudges of life that beg to be wiped away. Washing away the grime is freeing, brightening; not only my home, but also my outlook. I enjoy removing the thin film that has prevented me from seeing things clearly. All that it takes is my attention, clean water, vinegar, a lint-free cloth, and a touch of detergent to wash the thin panes of glass that can separate me from what I want to experience. This simple action can bring my windows back to their pure, clear state so that I can see what life has to offer. Each time I clean, I am reminded that what I see on the outside often mimics what is on the inside. So without judging too harshly, I begin by examining my emotions, my thoughts, and what I have focused upon, so that I can open myself to the possibilities of fresh, new perspectives about life. Spring-cleaning 101. Cleaning does not require an examination of each and every speck of dust in an attempt to figure out where it came from. It doesn’t matter how it got there—it only matters that there is an opened potential for a fresh, healthier point of view. Bit by bit, I can feel a palpable lightness, a smile spreads across my face, and I can step back and be glad for the effort. Cleaning can be fun, or, at the very least cathartic, as I begin sorting through what is needed, what can be shared, what can be refurbished, and what ought to be replaced. It suspends time, giving me time to reflect upon where I am, where I have been, and where I want to go. Cleaning allows me to see the reality of beauty, both inside and outside of myself. There is nothing like the feeling of wiping away what has obscured my vision, preventing me from seeing anything other than the annoying film that has distorted my point of view. Our emotions can be like dirty windows, obscuring the view and directing our attention away from what is really important, distorting our focus, and disturbing our peace of mind. 30 | MY Magazine

If we put off cleaning, grime accumulates and our perspectives, beliefs, and opinions thicken the fog of confusion, drawing our attention solely to what we don’t want and blinding us to the potentials that lie just beyond our unclear thinking. Clear emotions, like clean windows, can bring beauty back into focus. Whether we are aware of it or not, our emotions, thoughts, and actions are swayed by what we choose to focus on. If we focus solely upon what causes us distress, we narrow our point of view. However, if we choose to take action, cleaning away the debris of the past, we can begin to live more fully in the present and envision a new direction we wish to explore in our future. Beliefs are simply thoughts that we repeat over and over. Before long, these beliefs become commonplace, and our reactions become habitual rather than thoughtful. If we focus upon anger, we will remain angry. If we focus upon appreciation, we will become appreciative in ever expanding ways. Each day, we have opportunities to spring clean, no matter the time or season. Joyfully discard debilitating, worn out emotions, and tired, unhealthy beliefs that have obscured our perspective. If you want to live a more joyful life, clean up your thinking, clean up your emotions, reexamine your choices, and clean the debris away that has prevented you from living a more joyful Life. It’s yours after all. It’s time to shine! So smile, pick up your buckets, and let’s get cleaning. Inside and out. Elaine Grohman is a speaker, author, energy healer and angel reader. Benefits of Massage therapy By Margot Kohler A widespread perception, or misconception, is that massage therapy is a luxury, one which is reserved for special occasions or when we sustain an injury. While cultures throughout Europe and other parts of the world know otherwise, it is time we change our perception of this beneficial and holistic therapy.

What would change if you really took care of yourself?

The medical profession is slowly accepting massage therapy as a complimentary treatment to traditional medicine, and will hopefully support it as preventative medicine in the future. The benefits offered by massage therapy are numerous and have been proven to offer results. Knowing and understanding these advantages will hopefully offer you the incentive for investing in better health and well being. A few benefits of massage therapy include: Stress Reduction: Massage therapy affects our hormones, reducing the “stress” hormone known as cortisol, while also increasing the “happy” hormones of dopamine and serotonin, helping to decrease anxiety and depression. Increased Circulation: It also assists with lymphatic drainage and flushing toxins from the system. This enhanced vascular function can help reduce fatigue, promote healthier skin and hair, and strengthen the immune system.

Everything.

Pain Relief: A safe alternative to prescription medication, massage has proven to lessen back pain and increase function for those suffering from chronic muscle tension and spasms. The release of endorphins work in the body to help as a natural pain reliever. Enhanced Skin Condition: In addition to improving the condition of the body’s largest organ, massage also helps promote tissue regeneration to reduce stretch marks, scar tissue, and post surgical adhesions and swelling. Joint Health: Not only for injuries, massage helps to increase range of motion by decreasing joint stiffness and pain. Those suffering from arthritis and bursitis benefit greatly from massage therapy.

Your Skin is a key to your overall well-being. Sun exposure not only ages you prematurely, but can cause significant damage to your health. Allow the skin care experts at Margot European Day Spa to prepare your skin so you can enjoy the outdoors without risking your beauty or your health.

Enhanced Sleep Quality: Not just during a massage, but afterwards, is when you can experience the best sleep. Some say that massage directly affects our delta waves, promoting a deeper and sounder sleep. In addition, some medical fields have begun integrating massage therapy into the treatment of carpel tunnel, chronic fatigue, premenstrual syndromes, migraines, and asthma. There has also been an increase in maternity massage, infant massage, and massage therapy combined together with physical therapy. The healing benefits affect not only the body, but the mind and spirit, promoting overall physical and mental balance. As a treatment or for preventative measures, prioritize your health and consider investing in your own well being. It may be the best investment you will ever make.

SPECIAL OFFER: 20% off Monday through Thursday on facials or sunless airbrush tanning treatments.* *Some conditions apply. Please ask when scheduling.

MY | ask the life coach

What are your rituals? By John J. Schalter Dear John, Recently I have been feeling depressed and overwhelmed. When I go to the doctors all he wants to do for me is prescribe drugs. Isn’t there a better way? Diane K. Dear Diane, Let me say first that as your life coach, I cannot suggest to you that your doctor is wrong in making drugs a solution to your problems. Severe depression may require medical treatment. Yet, I believe that prescription drugs are not the only way. There are more holistic alternatives that can be very effective. In my own life, the following activities have been life changing. First of all, get in motion. Depression and the feeling of being overwhelmed hate movement. Science has proven that “an object in motion tends to stay in motion.” When you move, you almost always feel better. A mentor of mine, the famous life couch Tony Robbins, suggests that we all need rituals to create a state of mind of empowerment. Positive rituals are life activities that we do on regular basis that nourish our lives. One of the things that I do every morning is what Tony calls “the Hour of Power.” This is an hour I spend every morning, programing my personal computer we call our “mind.” It is a ritual that includes rhythmic breathing, walking and verbal affirmations. Each morning at 6 am, after my ritual of meditation and prayer, I walk for an hour. During this time, I walk at a very rhythmic and deliberate pace. As I stride to the count “one, two, three, four…one, two, three, four…” (It is usually dark or I am on a trail in the woods so people don’t think I am a crazy man talking to himself.) These patterning activities have shown to cause what is called “state,” and a change in brain chemistry.

Around a century ago a Frenchman named Emile Coue coined the phrase as a prescription to his patients. Coue was a psychologist and pharmacist who believed that most mental and physical illnesses were a result of the person’s thinking. He discovered that he could dramatically help the recovery of his patients simply by verbalizing this very empowering phrase. Other good affirmations include, “All I need is inside me now…all the strength I need is inside me now…all the joy I need is inside me know.” Sometimes, I speak directly to my subconscious with the words, “Show me where to go…show me what to do…tell me what to say.” Trust me… affirmations work! Especially those spoken out loud and with feeling. Almost any positive affirmation in the present tense will do. Recognize this. The subconscious mind is an obedient servant. It loves to be told what to do and when to do it. As I walk my mind slowly fills with a marked degree of clarity. My thoughts shift gears from the feeling of fatigue to an energized, positive expectancy. The fresh air and breathing stimulates my body like a massage. This “Hour of Power” establishes a platform that allows me to start my day. After the walk, I experience an endorphin release that creates a new “state of mind.” It is like Deepak Chopra says, “Why take drugs when you have to greatest pharmacy in the universe between your ears?” Try this for 30 days and let me know your experience. I promise it will be life changing. And your depression? Let me know what happens to this unwanted visitor! We are too blessed to be stressed. Live a quantum life! Be well,

John

I also breathe in through my nose four times and then breathe out from my mouth four times and touch the tips of each of my four fingers with my thumbs. I then speak a series of affirmations which are in sync with my breathing and pace. These include “every day, in every way, I get better, better, and better, yes!” Is this just positive thinking? May not!

pon first meeting her, I was struck by her soft eyes and warm smile. I didn’t know what to expect from the new owner and publisher of the Southern Oakland County MY Magazine, but Darlene Douglas turned out to be a professional woman with an energetic depth of character that carries this mother of four through her busy days. Highly educated and well spoken, I had the great pleasure of getting to know her one evening, and would like to share that with you. First, let me give you a little background. Darlene grew up in Canada, just north of Detroit, in Windsor, Ontario. After graduating from nursing school in Canada in 1989, she worked at a local Windsor hospital. She decided to attend a job fair in Detroit, in 1990, this is Darlene with sons, Michael, Thomas, and Jonathan, husband, Christopher and daughter, Adana. where her circumstances brought her to America. She took one of many leaps of faith in her life and applied for, and landed, a job in Michigan, When Adana was born, she too came a little early and was commuting for several years. She worked at Harper Hospital admitted to the NICU. Adana was given a clean bill of health on a diabetic unit for a year. She learned a lot, everyone on a few days later and released to go home. Up until that that unit was very sick and needed to be closely monitored. time, for Darlene it had always felt like she was one child Complications from diabetes were very devastating and short. This return to the NICU with her daughter felt very life-threatening. A simple wound could result in amputation, healing, like everything had come full circle. At that point, and that kind of potential catastrophic outcome made every Darlene felt whole again and she knew that Adana was her aspect of caring for these patients important. last baby. She moved from Harper Hospital to the Detroit campus of Henry Ford Hospital in the cardio-thoracic unit. From there, she applied to and was accepted into the Nurse Anesthesia program at the University of Detroit Mercy. She moved to Michigan permanently after marrying Christopher Douglas in 1995. Darlene gave birth to her first child while she was in anesthesia school. This little baby boy was born very early, and, having underdeveloped lungs, he didn’t survive. This was a devastating time for Darlene and her husband. “He lived for two days, on his second day I watched as he passed away,” she shared. I was completely devastated. “I remember thinking ‘I am never doing this again.’” Of course, time heals and when she felt strong enough and was ready to make another leap of faith, she became pregnant again. Her next son, Michael was born healthy and strong. Then came Jonathan two years later, then Thomas two years following that, and finally her daughter, Adana.

Michael is now almost 17 years old, Jonathan will be 15 in April, Tommy just turned 13, and Adana will be 11 in November. She graduated with a Masters in Science, and became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in 1997. She worked at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Pontiac for a while before getting a job with a staffing company, Anesthesia Staffing Consultants (ASC) and assigned work at UnaSource Surgery Center in Troy along with Orthopedic Surgical Institute located in Rochester Hills. Darlene went on to become a U.S. citizen in 2006. That gives you the nuts and bolts framework of Darlene Douglas’ history. Now I would like to share with you who she is. Darlene has been working hard as a very successful clinician for many years. Her life is busy and full with family and work responsibilities. So when I asked her why she wanted to

become a publisher and own the Southern Oakland County MY publication, I was fascinated by her answer. What seemed to be more than she could manage, it now made perfect sense. “I’m a busy working mom with four kids and a full career,” she said. “Why am I adding a publishing job into the mix? Because it challenges my creative side, and allows me to express myself.” Like a lot of working moms, she answered to other’s needs for a long time, professionally and personally. She had mastered her career, she enjoyed her work but Darlene felt like she needed something more. She had been craving something that allowed her to expand and create; something that was all her own. Darlene expressed that the four Douglas children were also now at a point where they need her less and less, which allowed her more time to focus on her own interests. Although they all still need her, the teenagers are naturally itching for more independence from their mom. “Even though my life was full, I still felt a sort of void.” When Darlene saw that Maria Savoy (previous owner of MY magazine, new owner of MY Publishing) was offering publishing opportunities with MY Magazine, she knew this was the career she had been looking for. The publishing world would give her the chance to express herself, putting her personal design touches, input, and direction into the publication. This was the creative outlet that was missing in her life.

36 | MY Magazine

www.mymagazineoakland.com

“My life is all about my family’s needs, my work schedule, and as important as my family and job are, I wanted to feel like I had a say in something more personal,” she disclosed. “I felt like the magazine would help me do that.” She continued, “I have this natural sense of giving and I believe the value of service lies in the spirit in which you serve. I could now service my community to help inspire and empower others. “I thought about it, considered it from every angle, and prayed. I kept wondering if it was possible to do it with everything else that I have going on.” She got the much needed support from her husband and family, so she decided this was the right time to take this latest leap of faith. Darlene’s faith is a big part of what motivates and helps her maintain a capacity for attending to her multiple responsibilities. “Somehow, it always works out. There’s always someone who is willing to help when things get tight, I never need to worry about getting it all done.” Darlene shares. “I am thrilled to be the owner of my own business, something that I can shape and share.” So, while maintaining her professional career as a seasoned nurse anesthetist, Darlene Douglas brings her positive spirit and work ethic with her to her new career at MY Magazine as the Southern Oakland County publisher.

A WOMAN’S HAIR,

T

he psychology of losing your hair, or to have thinning hair, is a complex issue. Hair is considered an essential part of identity: especially for women. It often represents femininity, attractiveness, and overall good health. If you think that thinning hair is only a problem with men, you are wrong. It is estimated that forty percent of people who experience temporary or permanent hair loss are, in fact, women! Through the ages, a woman’s image has been defined by her hair. Psychologically and emotionally, women, at an

early age, have learned to accept this view and, as adults, we even reinforce it with the attention we give to our hair. Heather Darwish, Raydiance’s consultant and CEO says “Every woman deserves and seeks to feel confident about who they are.” She continues, “Unfortunately, our hair has become a barometer for measuring that confidence. How many times have you asked yourself, ‘Am I having a good hair day or a bad hair day?’ For many women, hair loss, however, is inescapable. According to a 2012 Gallup Poll, half of women 50 and older suffer from thinning hair (shedding more than 6 and upwards of 100 strands of hair per day with a single tug of hair). Most women notice hair loss in their 50s or 60s, but it can happen at any age and for a variety of reasons. Heather also explains that hair loss in women can be triggered by many different medical conditions and by some lifestyle factors. The most common medical condition we see is female pattern baldness, which is a genetic condition. Although it mostly occurs in the late 50s or 60s, it can happen at any time, even during one’s teenage years. Other common causes of hair loss are medications, like chemotherapy, high blood pressure, or following a pregnancy, stress, thyroid issues, or major surgery. Fungal infections of the scalp, diseases such as lupus or diabetes, or hormonal problems can also cause hair loss.

STAY ON YOUR TOES By Mary Meldrum

I

have always been a “science chick,” attentive to animals and nature, and a bit obsessed with anatomy and physiology. Staying healthy is easier for me when I understand the inner workings of the human body. Many of those workings are not always obvious. I want to share with you an interesting fact about your anatomy that will help you to appreciate the sometimes subtle operation of your body that enhances your health.

The design of the human body is a marvel. It is able to perform under some very difficult circumstances. Physical barriers and hurdles that were prevalent in generations past have been conquered by industrial and technological solutions, making movement in our everyday lives fairly uncomplicated and relatively easy. Although this provides us with an increased level of comfort and convenience, without making a concerted effort of exercise, our bodies are exposed to a more sedentary existence that doesn’t always match with our physical architecture and composition. We are built to move.

40 | MY Magazine

www.mymagazineoakland.com

I like to think of the human body as a filter and a pump. Your lungs filter air. Your digestive system filters food. Your heart and muscles provide the pump that moves food and air through your body and provides the ability for every cell to eat, breathe, and dispose of waste products. How you feel is dependent upon the vibrancy and health of each cell. The efficiency of every cell’s function relies entirely on the efficiency of the filters and pumps that bring it life. If you think of your body as a machine, like a car, keeping the filters clean and keeping the pumps pumping is imperative. Inefficiency of any part drags down the performance of the overall machine, and inevitably leads to a breakdown. There is another quiet pump involved in keeping the heart efficiently pumping away for decades. The soleus muscle is a powerful muscle located in your calf. It is vital in walking, running, skipping, jumping, and dancing. The soleus is also important for maintaining an erect standing posture, and plays a very critical role of pumping venous blood back to the heart from your lower body. It is sometimes referred to as the “second heart”. Without the help of the soleus muscle, the heart is saddled with the considerable burden of pumping the body’s entire volume of blood throughout the body, including the returning venous blood from the lower legs against gravity. The heart is an incredibly powerful organ that can handle a lot of stress, but protracted overuse of its services without the assistance of the soleus muscle will eventually wear it out faster. Proper locomotion from the swing and sway of the hip girdle down to the heel-toe action of the feet engages the soleus providing the proper mechanics to efficiently activate the heart’s “second pump”, and provide the extra “push” designed within our body’s architecture to help blood move against gravity and return to the heart.

The key to this successful optimization of the function of the soleus muscle has to do with elevation onto the ball/toe of the foot. Lifting up onto your toes causes the calf muscles, including the soleus, to contract. When the soleus muscle is not engaged, the body mechanics can be extremely compromised. People who walk by slapping their feet and never elevating onto the ball of their foot during locomotion may eventually suffer some sort of heart issue. People who get up on their toes when they walk, dance, jump, run, and skip improve heart function and enjoy increased longevity. Heart disease remains a big health problem in this country. By Barbara Krajenke FM Dish® began in the Frosted Mug liquor store in Sterling Heights 18 years ago. For the past three years, the company has been operating out of the location on Haggerty Road in West Bloomfield Township. They are now in planning on building their headquarters at the original Frosted Mug location with the anticipation of adding 25 more employees.

“We’re a family business; my brother is always going to be my partner and best friend. I don’t have to worry about someone not knowing what to do. I know the people I’m working with,” says Sean.

“Always treat customers well,” said Sean Jarbo. The family business was found in 1995 by Zeke Jarbo and is also run by his sons Sean, operations director, and Jessi, marketing director, and whom they refer as the big boss, Goliath—a cuddly Shih Tzu-Bichon Frise mix. One of the benefits of a family run business is the Jarbo brothers learned the industry early on. Jessi started learning the business during grade school when he would visit the shop and became a master at assembling the tiny screws to the satellite dishes. “We know the ins and the outs of the business because we grew up in it,” says Jessi. Dish® has one of the highest customer satisfaction ratings according to J.D. Power and Associates. Since FM Dish® is a family run business, Jessi says they know how to focus on the importance of relationships, especially with their customers. One instance when they went above and beyond for a customer was at a retirement home in Chelsea. One of the residents called them saying his service kept crashing and he kept loosing channels. After several visits, they discovered the resident’s remote wasn’t working and brought him a brand new remote.

FM Dish® began servicing residential customers and, over the years, grew to include commercial clients including hotels, retirement homes, government services, and border patrol. “Our five year plan is to add more commercial and governmental properties while providing for residential customers,” says Sean. Zeke Jarbo chose to work with Dish® because of its availability and technology. “Dish® is a national brand offering brand new equipment and state of the art technology,” says Sean. The difference between satellite and cable television is that cables are buried, requiring land space incurred by the customer as additional fees and taxes. Cable is also more likely to loose service due to weather or land disturbances. Satellite TV provides television programming using broadcast signals from communication satellites received by a satellite dish and a low-noise block down converter (LNB). “Ninety-seven percent of the time the system is up and working. Don’t have servers that can crash,” said Sean.

“Watch from anywhere, record anything, or stream with high definition.” Satellite dishes should be mounted in a clear space that does not have any obstructions covering the sky, such as awnings or tree branches, to prevent interruption of service. A securely mounted and well-placed dish will not likely experience disruption of service. “Quality of installation, taking the time to assessing good signal. We work in teams of two—one inside, one outside,” said Sean. Installation takes about one hour for a basic package. FM Dish® guarantees installation within 24 hours of ordering, and a 24-hour service window. New technology coming out by Dish® that’s available through FM Dish® includes Hopper wireless, a whole-home HD DVR system that is also being designed as a home automation and alarm system and 4k box, giving four times the resolution of high definition, which is available in May. FM Dish® gives back through charities, such as The Friendship Circle and Adopt a Refugee. The company is also a member of the Chaldean Chamber or Commerce. Current Satellite TV packages range from $34.99 to $49.99 but can be less with special offers. These packages can include, HD, Hopper, and DVR among selected channels.

HEALTH IS

Wealth

By Barbara Krajenke

F

atigue, depression, weight gain, and aches and pains. This was my first year experience in graduate school. I was avid exerciser before I embarked on a master’s program, taking on a manic lifestyle. I felt great, looked great and I was great.

During this time I realized just how much fitness and diet have a profound impact on not just my appearance but also my overall health. Regardless if I could attend a gym, I had to do something to keep me healthy and award me the energy to keep up with a hectic life.

The challenges of full-time shifts coupled, with all-nighters of 25 page papers, reaped its toll. I stopped taking care of myself, gave up working out, and ate whatever was available (pizza and peanut butter cups washed down with a pot or two of coffee).

Many of you may not be in the exact predicament I was, but perhaps you are raising your kids, taking care of an elderly parent or working overtime, but an exercise and nutrition program can be catered to you. Many successful programs are a meld of gym and home workouts.

In the troughs of this lifestyle, I felt my physical stamina waning and my cognitive abilities dwindling, while shear exhaustion was an expectation of day-to-day life. I felt I could not incur another financial burden or time constraint. Yet something had to change. I needed a workout program that was designed for me that was feasible with results.

EDUCATE

I enrolled in a Saturday morning adult ballet class. After the first class, I felt physically stronger and mentally clearer. I returned home feeling invigorated. Two weeks later I started attending a weekly Pilates class. The gym workouts helped pull me out of a slump. The classes motivated me to focus on nutrition and bring a lifestyle of fitness home. I combined classes with two-hour weekly hikes and a home yoga practice. 44 | MY Magazine

When embarking on a home workout routine, it is important to be educated on how to reach your fitness goals. Home workouts can benefit from the knowledge of a professional who is experienced in creating individual programs, teaching proper form and reducing the risk of injury. Each workout should include five components to a well-rounded routine: warm-up, cardio, strength building, flexibility, and cool-down. Marsella Morrill, a personal trainer at Life Time Fitness in Troy, suggests meeting with a trainer and nutritionist once a month to keep you on track. Working with a professional helps to design a program around your goals and time

Turn off the phone; forget about the dust bunnies, they will still be there when you’re finished. If you’ve reached a pinnacle, visit a trainer or educate yourself on how to continue to progress.

NUTRITION

Whether at home or at the gym, your level of fitness depends upon nutrition. Knight knows from experience that working out alone isn’t enough to be healthy. He started working out regularly when he was 21 years old. When Knight was 36, a doctor said he might only have 2 years to live due to his poor eating habits—being at risk for type 2 diabetes, adrenal fatigue, and high cholesterol.

constraints. “Every exercise is individualized to the client to deal with restrictions, age, fitness level, goals, and correct deviations. Everyone starts somewhere. Trainers are helpful because they help to push you out of comfort zone.” Michael Knight, owner of Art of Strength in West Bloomfield and Birmingham suggests seeking out the right trainer for you—someone that can relate to you and will help guide you to achieve your goals. “Find the right person. Trainers should be teachers and mentors.”

DISCIPLINE

Working out at home is a lifestyle requiring discipline. You are not held accountable to a trainer or a peer group available at the gym. Home workouts are done on your own terms. It is important to push yourself and focus on both the short-term and long-term goals of your fitness program.

Knight was able to turn around this crisis through a wellbalanced diet. “Protein, good carbs, and fat. Eating a wellbalanced diet at every meal and understanding labels. Eat for enjoyment or fuel to get through the day. Once you’re hungry you’ve waited too long. Meal planning, know where you’ll be in three hours. Eat enough…eat right.” Nutrition is a lifestyle, not a fad diet. Eat well-balanced meals and avoid foods that are high in sugars and salt, processed or chemically altered, and that have no fat or low fat, as they may contain artificial ingredients or ‘fillers’, which do not have nutritional value or could be harmful to the body. Eating a variety of f,oods helps to ensure vitamins and minerals are fueling your body. The main component of home or gym workouts is motivation. Whatever platform you choose, don’t be intimated by age or fitness restrictions; a workout can be catered to you. Even after one workout, you can start feeling a better a more prosperous you. The choice to work out and eat right is made at home. Only you can empower you.

“(Trainers) help to educate and make sure you’re progressing not just long term goals but small goals to help keep you motivated.” says Morrill. Small term goals, such as an increase in flexibility, holding a plank for a longer duration each time, increasing the amount of sit-ups or pushes ups per workout, and focusing on how clothes fit and NOT the scale. “Lifestyle changes include small changes to maintain over time so people can maintain that. Five days is a good mix with cardio, strength and stretching like yoga and pilates.” Recovery is just as important, when you break muscles down you have to build them back up. Get more muscle on days of rest. Nutrition helps.” Another issue of discipline with home workouts is distractions. Make sure this is a time when your household knows that it is set aside for your health goals. www.mymagazineoakland.com

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar A pple cider vinegar offers wide-ranging uses including everything from curing hiccups to alleviating cold symptoms. Some people have turned to apple cider vinegar to help fight diabetes, cancer, heart problems, high cholesterol, and weight issues. Below are a few more examples of the amazing health benefits of apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar helps tummy troubles. Sip some apple cider vinegar mixed with water. If a bacterial infection is at the root of your diarrhea, apple cider vinegar could help contain the problem thanks to its antibiotic properties. Apple cider vinegar prevents indigestion. Sip before eating, especially if you know you’re going to indulge in foods that will make you sorry later. Try this folk remedy: add 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to a glass of warm water and drink it 30 minutes before you dine. Apple cider vinegar cures hiccups. Take a teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar; its sour taste could stop a hiccup in its tracks. Apple cider vinegar soothes a sore throat. As soon as you feel the prickle of a sore throat, employ germbusting apple cider vinegar to help head off the infection at the pass. Turns out, most germs can’t survive in the acidic environment vinegar creates. Just mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup warm water and gargle every hour or so. Apple cider vinegar clears a stuffy nose. Next time you’re stuffed up, grab the apple cider vinegar. It contains potassium, which thins mucus; and the acetic acid in it prevents bacteria growth, which could contribute to nasal congestion. Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink to help sinus drainage.

Apple cider vinegar aids in weight loss. Apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight. Here’s why: The acetic acid suppresses your appetite, increases your metabolism, and reduces water retention. Apple cider vinegar helps control blood sugar. A few swigs of apple cider vinegar could help keep your blood sugar levels balanced, according to several studies that have shown a link between the two. Scientists think the antiglycemic effect of the acid is the key. Apple cider vinegar could lower cholesterol. More research is needed to definitively link apple cider vinegar and its capability to lower cholesterol in humans, but one 2006 study found that the acetic acid in the vinegar lowered bad cholesterol in rats. Also, a Japanese study found that half an ounce of apple cider vinegar a day lowered cholesterol in people who participated in the panel. Apple cider vinegar clears acne. Apple cider vinegar makes a great natural toner that can leave skin looking healthier. Its antibacterial properties help keep acne under control, and the malic and lactic acids found in apple cider vinegar soften and exfoliate skin, reduce red spots, and balance the pH of your skin. Apple cider vinegar banishes bad breath. Gargle with it, or drink a teaspoon (diluted with water if you prefer) to kill odor-causing bacteria. Apple cider vinegar whitens teeth. Gargle with apple cider vinegar in the morning. The vinegar helps remove stains, whiten teeth, and kill bacteria in your mouth and gums. Brush as usual after you gargle. Apple cider vinegar boosts energy. Exercise and sometimes extreme stress cause lactic acid to build up in the body, causing fatigue. Interestingly, the amino acids contained in apple cider vinegar act as an antidote. What’s more, apple cider vinegar contains potassium and enzymes that may relieve that tired feeling. Next time you’re beat, add a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar to a glass of chilled vegetable drink or to a glass of water.

Fresh, Vibrant, & Flavorful

SPRING DISHES By Chef Dawn Bause I can’t think of anything I don’t love about spring. It’s about new life and a feeling of promise and hope. The days are longer, the sun is just starting to feel warm, the air smells sweet, and the tender young vegetables that appear in the market are full of vitality. When the first vibrant red stalks of rhubarb appear at the store, I know spring has indeed sprung. Dandelion greens, crisp baby radishes, asparagus, peas, and artichokes all make their way into our meal planning and onto our plates. Loaded with vitamins, these veggies are ready to perform a sort of spring-cleaning for our bodies. I hope you savor these recipes and embrace the signs of spring bringing them into your own kitchen throughout the season.

Sprinkle over some of the fresh basil, and squeeze in some additional lemon juice from the lemon wedge garnish, if desired.

Roasted Baby Artichokes with Black Pepper-Lemon Vinaigrette

Pasta with Snap Peas, Basil, and Spinach

Servings: 8-10 hearts

Ingredients

Baby artichokes are one of my all time favorite vegetables. I toss them with garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper and roast them in a cast iron skillet for about 25 minutes. When I make the vinaigrette, rather than whisk the ingredients together, I use a blender to emulsify. The processing power makes it thick, like a dip. It’s much better this way for dunking because it won’t separate.

Coarse salt and ground pepper

Serves 4

¾ pound short pasta, such as gemelli 3 garlic cloves, halved 8 ounces snap peas, halved 10 ounces baby spinach

Ingredients

½ cup fresh basil leaves

4-5 fresh baby artichokes

1/3 cup heavy cream

¼ c. olive oil 1 garlic clove, minced salt + pepper Black pepper-lemon vinaigrette zest of 1 lemon 6 tbsp. fresh lemon juice, about 2 lemons 2 tsp. honey ¼ garlic clove

3 ounces Parmesan, grated (¾ cup) In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta and garlic 1 minute less than package instructions. Add snap peas and cook 30 seconds. Add spinach and basil and stir once to wilt. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water, then drain. Add cream to pot and heat over medium-high until bubbling. Return the pasta mixture and 1/4 cup pasta water to pot and cook, stirring, 2 minutes. Stir in Parmesan. If necessary, add remaining pasta water to create a light sauce that coats pasta. Season with salt and pepper.

1 heaped tablespoon of Greek yogurt or low-fat sour cream ¾ c. olive oil salt + pepper * This recipe makes more than enough vinaigrette. Save some for salads and roasted vegetables. Preheat your oven to 425 F. To prep the artichokes, trim the bottom stem about ¼-inch. Using a vegetable peeler, peel the stem (like a carrot) to remove any thick, fibrous strands. Next, remove most of the outer green leaves. Keep peeling until you have reached the light green center (you will remove about ¾’s of the artichoke). The texture of the leaves will be papery thin. Using a sharp knife, cut off the pointy top. Slice the artichokes in half lengthwise. In a large bowl, add the artichoke halves, olive oil, garlic, and season with salt and pepper. Toss well Transfer to an iron skillet, placing the artichokes cut-side down. Bake in the center of the oven for about 25 minutes, checking after 15 minutes to ensure even browning. Meanwhile, make the vinaigrette. Add the first five ingredients to a blender. With the machine running, slowly stream in the olive oil to emulsify. Add salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to a small bowl. Remove the artichokes from the oven. Arrange onto a serving platter or serve directly in the skillet. Enjoy warm, with vinaigrette on the side for dunking.
