Attractive planters and bright new red benches, trees – all contribute to make our surroundings rather more beautiful, for us as residents, and for our area’s welcome visitors.Afew months ago, a call went out for volunteers to help with watering and maintenance and, slowly and steadily AGS membership, from newly arrived to long time residents, increased, and yes, there is always room for more to join the group. Gardening is as the seasons demand - watering has been a weekly routine in these hot dry days and you have perhaps spotted volunteers with watering cans filling up from the yellow bowser on Monday evenings. Of course pruning and weeding is a given, and anyone who knows their plants and weeds is especially welcome. Well, as welcome as anyone who doesn’t but would like to.
Do you have something to share?
You don’t have to be a gardener to know that from small acorns… Your contact for more information and especially to become part of the group is admin@mid-deeside.org.uk – we are looking forward to hearing from you.

Games day may have started with a drizzle on Saturday 6th August but as the skies cleared competitors at Aboyne Highland Games displayed record-breaking performances for the cheering crowds who gathered in droves on Aboyne Green. Eight pipe bands marked the start to the day’s proceedings as they marched through the village and on to the green, before the official raising of the Chieftain flag by Earl of Aboyne, Alistair Aboyne, Deputy Chieftain.
Possibly the newest volunteer group in our lovely village, Aboyne Green Spaces has made a vibrant and colourful difference to Station Square, the entrance to The Green, and the top square on Ballater Road, writes Ruth Emslie Games Day!

9 In the Swim with UDASC
Upper Deeside Amateur Swimming Club (UDASC) is based at Aboyne pool and has been training competitive swimmers for over 30 years. Our swimmers have performed well in local swim meets and competed at national level. The Club offers a supportive and friendly environment in which young swimmers can develop their swimming potential with the guidance of qualified swim coaches.
If you have been watching any of the swimming events at the Commonwealth games over the summer then you will have seen some outstanding performances by our Team Scotland swimmers. Their success at being selected to compete at the games is a testament to their talent and dedication to the sport. The story of each swimmer will be unique but there will be one common threadthey all started out at their local swimming club - that’s where their journey began.
If you are interested in joining the Club will be running Try Out sessions in September at the Aboyne pool. Please do contact us and let us know if your swimmer would like to come along! You can email us at secretary.udasc@ gmail.com or visit www.udasc.org
The Club runs five squads with ages ranging from 8-16. We take swimmers that are able to swim 50m and develop their swimming technique, fitness and discipline. Slowly introducing competitive swimming skills and offering the opportunity to enter swim meets in the Shire. The UDASC is part of South Aberdeenshire Swimming, a group of four swimming clubs that work together to introduce swimmers into competition through friendly local league meets. Club swimming is not just about individual performance, it is about being part of a team, meeting new friends and sharing the excitement of competition. At UDASC we work hard but we also ensure all our swimmers are having fun and enjoy their swimming experience.

Rick Wood is a professional landscape and wildlife photographer living in Aboyne. His career began as a Cinematographer for the film and television industries, which led him to create his own film company in Aberdeen (TVP Film & Multimedia Ltd), which is still producing films from its studios in Broomhill Road, Aberdeen.
TVP has been BAFTA-nominated twice for its feature films. Rick was also an underwater cameraman, travelling around the oceans of the world filming WW2 wrecks from Scapa Flow to the sunken fleet of Truk Lagoon in the Pacific. The films he produced have been viewed on various television networks around the world, including National Geographic. Now semi-retired, Rick’s passion is digital photography and his fine art can be seen on his website.
Rick is known locally for his squirrel portraitures which are displayed at the Boat Inn and the Corner House gift shop. Rick told The Fountain: “They have a kind of oil painting texture which attracts its audience, I then have them printed on special fine art paper like Hahnemuhle Rag which enhances the quality overall, making them look like a painting.” Anyone interested in these prints can purchase them online at www.rickwoodphotography.com they are available in all sizes.

The truth is that pain in this area can be caused by many different things. Figuring out the exact cause of sciatica can be challenging but this is essential to begin healing.
Piriformis Syndrome: The sciatic nerve runs past the piriformis muscle (located around your hip/buttock). The sciatic nerve can become irritated when the piriformis is very tight and stiff (very common with prolonged sing!) resulting in pain around the hip or into the thigh. You’ve all heard of sciatic nerve can become irritated when
SI Syndrome: The SI joints are the larger joints that connect your spine to your pelvis. Some studies say between 15% and 30% of low back pain sufferers have dysfunction of these joints. SI syndrome is usually caused by inactivity and poor posture but can also be aggravated by injury or pregnancy. Pain can be anywhere from the lower back to the back of the leg, so diagnosis requires a complete physical examination.
We have lost count of how many patients we see who are convinced they have a disc problem, for us only to pinpoint a muscle in their hip and re-create their pain. Fortunately trigger points are much easier to deal with than disc problems!
Pain in this area can be sharp or dull, or in some cases can feel more like pins and needles or numbness. Although the diagnosis of sciatica is very common, receiving an official name for your condition doesn’t necessarily make the pain any better!
If you’ve ever had pain in your lower back, buttock or leg, then you might have assumed that you have sciatica. What exactly is sciatica? The definition of sciatica is pain anywhere along the course of the sciatic nerve (basically nearly everywhere from your hip to your toes!).
ASciaticaPainintheButt?!
Shooting pain can also occur if you are one of the 15% of people that have the sciatic nerve travelling through the piriformis!
Potential Causes of “Sciatica”: Disc Lesions: You’ve all heard of a “slipped disc”. The truth is the disc doesn’t really slip anywhere – what usually happens is part of the disc tears and the inside of the disc bulges out. If the bulge is large enough it can push on a spinal nerve, causing sharp and shooting pain and pins and needles down the leg. Luckily this is a less common condition but extremely painful when it does happen.
Trigger Points: When they are very tight, some of the muscles around the hip and pelvis actually refer pain down the leg in a very similar pattern to a disc lesion. This phenomenon is called a trigger point.
There are so many potential causes of sciatica, it seems unfair to group all of them under one name. Whether you have been diagnosed with sciatica or not, treatment and recovery will vary depending on the true cause, how long the problem has been going on, and the age, lifestyle, and health of the person with the issue. The thought of addressing these factors on your own can be a daunting prospect! A pain in the butt is certainly no joke if you are the one who is suffering with it. Our team are experts in these types of conditions and will only commence a treatment plan after a full examination and diagnosis has been made. If any of the above sounds familiar, then we have a solution for you; an enormous 50% off a New Patient Experience with us at our custom designed clinic in Banchory (saving of £55!). At the start of this year, I got a full-time job. It has been truly brilliant – I am very lucky to have been welcomed so warmly into a great team of fellow writers, and I consider myself incredibly blessed. However, while I love what I am doing with my Mondays to Fridays, there is no denying that my physical activity levels have sharply declined since I started in February. As a result, I am feeling more sluggish in my body than I would like to. But, to remedy this increasingly stagnant state of being, I have signed myself up for the Illuminator Night Trail Race, which is set to be held on October 29 in Glen Tanar. Nothing gets me motivated

quite like some extrinsic motivation… and a hefty dose of accountability! I have done the Illuminator once before, although at that point in my life I was vastly fitter than I am now. As such, I am feeling a tad more trepidation this time around. All that being said, though, I am really excited to have another physical goal to set my sights on. Perhaps even more so than previously given that, for obvious reasons, the Illuminator has not been held for the last couple of years. So, come October, and come rain, snow or hail (or even, with this being the North East of Scotland, a combination of all three), I will be donning my sturdy shoes, rustling anorak and the customary sparkly adornments and geng myself back into the hills. I may not (read, will not) be breaking any records on this latest endeavour of mine, but just knowing that I am going to do it has already given me a much needed boost to my overall wellbeing.
