The Right Fit Roger Williams University is made up of over 7,000 total students, approximately 4,000 of whom are full-time undergraduates on our primarily residential, suburban waterfront campus in Bristol, Rhode Island. The campus is in close proximity to a historic, thriving downtown, nature parks and bike trails, and museums and cultural attractions. We have the offerings of a larger university, yet provide a student experience based on small classes and personal connections with faculty. Our specialties range from marine biology to architecture, and engineering to the arts. We offer 50 in-demand majors and 70+ minors. Our students take advantage of our flexible curriculum, and are encouraged to mix and match majors to customize their degree. Our education is centered around hands-on learning in which students engage in experiential, real-world projects done in conjunction with community partners. We are guided by our socially conscious mission to strengthen society through engaged learning and teaching. Explore this publication to learn more and see if RWU is a good fit for you! 4

Be part of something larger than yourself Knowing a little about our namesake and how it directs much of our work will help you understand the benefits of attending RWU. Do you remember learning about Roger Williams (the man from the 17th century) in any of your history classes? Here, in our home state of Rhode Island, he’s had a major impact on our local history, but what does it mean to have a University named after him? The legacy of Roger Williams is still at work on our campus today; we are a community that invites all voices to the conversation, which makes for vibrant classroom discussions. We value his principles of tolerance, inclusion, civic engagement, sustainability, and love of learning. Through community-based projects with real-world partners, service-learning opportunities, immersion trips, and exciting student/faculty research, you will personally play a role in continuing our namesake’s “lively experiment”. Our students help us to be a modern university setting that puts ideas into action. 6

Roger Williams founded the state of Rhode Island in 1663 as a haven for freedom seekers, and was well-known for his strong beliefs about the separation of church and state and his stances against confiscation of native lands.

He was chased out of his native England and then, once in America, was exiled a second time from Massachusetts due to his “dangerous opinions” about tolerance, inclusion and individual freedoms.

He is often referred to as the “forgotten founding father” by historians because, nearly a hundred years after his death, his contributions became the foundation for the Declaration of Independence.

7

Distinctive Locations

BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND Beyond all your campus-based activities, Roger Williams’ historic New England location provides nearby opportunities to engage in diverse settings, as well as tons to explore. The seaside town of Bristol, Rhode Island is perfectly situated halfway between Providence, Rhode Island’s thriving capital city, and the seaside city of Newport. The town is surrounded by the coastal beauty of Mt. Hope and Narragansett Bays.

8

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (Rhode Island’s capital)

Providence is a thriving cultural center less than 20 miles from the Bristol campus and easily accessible by bus (or bike path!). RWU’s University College downtown campus offers online, part-time, graduate, and certificate programs. Students love visiting Providence for fun, entertainment and also to take advantage of internships and research projects.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Diversity, equity and inclusion are core institutional values at RWU. We are at a critical inflection point in our national history and in our institutional history for diverse opinions. In both settings, this is a time of powerful momentum for change. In February 2020, we officially launched our three-year Equity Action Plan which is focused on the development of critical mass, capacity building, and culture change. This plan will help us continue to build our campus culture while adding programs and support services that will help you thrive academically, professionally, socially, and emotionally. Our efforts begin in the classroom with a vibrant and evolving curriculum, and our Faculty Diversity Fellowship, which focuses on equity in instruction. They extend through our Intercultutal University training program that equips staff to support a diverse student body. Additionally, we facilitate support and community-building through numerous student-facing centers, offices, affinity spaces, clubs, and organizations. Peer education and empowerment groups help students find places to share their stories and have their voices heard. Great things are happening here at RWU. We invite you to partner with us to build a more equitable university and community.

11

Find your path and passion With 50 majors and over 70 minors, you will find your path and passion at RWU. Most students combine programs to customize their degree. Blending majors and minors will diversify your resume and give you a leg up when looking for jobs.

If you aren’t sure what career you’d like to pursue or are still making up your mind, don’t worry – at RWU, you can shape your dream career. We believe that success is about more than just landing your first job. It’s about living your passion, reaching your full potential, and making an impact in our rapidly changing world.

Set Yourself Apart The RWU curriculum is designed with flexibility and individuality in mind. In addition to the courses in your primary major, our Core Curriculum gives you the space to explore different ways of thinking and add depth to other academic and career interests you have, or discover new ones.

12

Our Core Curriculum includes a Core Concentration, a five course collection that allows you to dive deeply into one specific academic program outside of your major. This means you’ll leave RWU with significant knowledge and expertise in at least two fields of study. Many students turn their Core Concentration into a minor or second major. For example, you could add a foreign language to your Construction Management major or supplement your Marine Biology major with a Photography minor. Our Core allows you to tailor your coursework and hone your specific skills and interests. Yet, it still leaves room for internships and studying abroad.

Learn By Doing At RWU, learning goes beyond just reading and taking notes. This is learning in action - experimenting and applying your skills in real-world settings throughout your academic career. That’s why experiential learning opportunities are available in every major, and designed to give you the skills that employers need. Whether it’s study abroad, internships, student teaching, student/faculty research, or short-term immersion trips, you will have multiple opportunities to try new things and apply your learning in different settings. It’s the act of doing that makes your education extremely personal and relevant. We prepare you to be a lifelong learner, an engaged professional, and a global citizen by ensuring you tackle projects for local organizations and communities, complete internships (locally and abroad), or conduct research with faculty.

27

Make an impact RWU will constantly remind you that you are part of something larger than yourself. From the first day you arrive on campus you’ll begin addressing social justice issues through advocacy and art, and working on innovative research and engaged projects that solve problems that matter deeply to our communities. You’ll be empowered to work with community partners to create change. At RWU, we’re not just creating great scholars – we’re creating great citizens.

In 2020, RWU received the highly-selective Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, recognizing the University as a leader in community-engaged work and civic scholarship. RWU is one of only two institutions in Rhode Island, and one of only 359 colleges and universities nationally to hold this classification.

28

COMMON BONDS Community engagement begins on day one. During their first week on campus, incoming students take part in the Community Connections program, which puts students into small groups to build relationships with peers, take walking tours of local communities (Bristol, Newport, Providence), and learn more about the history and contemporary life of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Along the way, students form friendships, meet faculty, staff, and community members, and learn about the myriad ways they can become engaged across their four years at RWU.

GROUP PROJECTS The RWU Community Partnerships Center (CPC) helps our faculty create RWU courses that include real-world projects that challenge you to solve actual problems for organizations and partners in the field. Through CPC projects, you’ll earn credit while you learn to work effectively as a part of a team and recommend plans of action for community organizations.

FORGING YOUR OWN PATH Once you’ve had experience with group settings and community engagement, it’s time to spread your own wings. Internships, research projects, and student theses all become ways for you to leave your mark on a project or organization. 29

Career outcomes Our goal is to ensure all students are challenged and supported on the path to success. At RWU, we believe that your preparation for life after college is an ongoing process that starts in your first year and continues as a partnership over the course of your college career and beyond. An investment in an RWU education gives you all of the ingredients for success.

“I grew up at Roger Williams and it helped me build a foundation, it helped me build confidence, it enabled me to get internships, all of which helped me get that first job...[and] all played a part in me having success throughout my career ... Located on the shores of Mt. Hope Bay, 42% of rooms have water views. Beyond soaking up the view, you’ll find that the best part of living on campus is the bond you will create with friends and neighbors.

LIVE AND LEARN RWU Living Learning Communities (LLCs) and Themed Communities are small groups of students who live and learn together in communities organized around identity, topics or academic programs. These communities are designed to help students get the most out of their first year by strengthening the connection between the classroom and the residence hall, and helping in the

36

transition from high school to college. They provide students with additional access to faculty mentors, create niche communities within our greater campus community, and come with built-in study groups. LLCs offer students opportunities to participate in special events both on and off campus.

Recent communities include: Black Diasporic Honors P.E.A.C.E. Queer and Trans Community Substance Free Community

Home on campus 95% of first-year students, and 75% of the overall undergraduate population live on campus among eight different residence areas. After traditional residence hall living in your first year, your housing choices expand to include everything from quads to suites and apartment-style facilities.

MORE THAN 40% OF OUR STUDENTS STUDY ABROAD

Study Abroad Our world continues to be inter-connected, and understanding global and intercultural perspectives is critical. At RWU you will have plenty of options to enrich your college experience, including the opportunity to study abroad in more than 27 countries across six continents. We’re proud to offer a number of diverse programs in different formats to fit the needs and wants of our student body. Study with partner universities, or participate in field-based experiential programs through semesterlong, for-credit options. Join faculty who lead programs across the globe for two-to-four-week contained programs in the winter and summer. These short-term programs provide a culturally rich experience, all while earning credit. Or, participate 42

in a flagship program tied directly to your academic department – study architecture in Barcelona or Florence, learn about performing arts in London, scuba dive and examine coral reefs in Bermuda, explore construction management in England, or serve in medical relief or public health work in the Dominican Republic. Many of these programs allow students to apply their scholarships and aid – making the cost the same or similar to studying on campus. And we offer several academic and need-based study abroad scholarships to make these culturally immersive experiences possible. Enhance your RWU experience by participating in one of these transformative programs.

“Studying Abroad in South Africa made me realize what I was capable of and see the person I wanted to become. ” - Emily Wall ’17 Anthropology/Sociology major, Studied at the University of Cape Town in 2015

Applying to RWU From the admission process and throughout your education, we are committed to providing a solid academic and financial foundation so you can forge your path and meet your personal and professional goals.

We’re test-optional

Notification

RWU has been test-optional for the past 10 years. This has been a tried-and-true policy for a very long time for us. This means that submission of standardized test scores is optional for admission, as well as for consideration for merit scholarships and the Honors Program.

EA decisions are mailed approximately 4-6 weeks after the deadline, in mid-December. For RD applicants, decisions are communicated on a continuous (rolling) basis.

We do a holistic review of every application We look at each and every piece of information, accomplishment, and involvement - and always in the context of your personal, school, and local environment. The University seeks students with a demonstrated capacity for academic achievement, who also possess intellectual curiosity, strength of character and a sense of social responsibility.

APPLY USING THE COMMON APPLICATION We encourage you to explore the site (if you haven’t already) to see how easy and streamlined the process is. www.commonapp.org OR you.rwu.edu/apply

APPLICATION DEADLINES (FALL) Early Action (EA): November 15 Regular Decision (RD): February 1

International Students International students - only for whom English is not the primary language or primary language of instruction - are encouraged to submit official English language test scores to receive consideration for the best admission pathway for their level of English proficiency: direct admission, the RWU ESL Bridge Program, or our conditional admission option. As we recognize a wide number of tests from around the world, please check our website to see the approved list.

Special Admission Requirements Certain academic programs require additional materials in the admission review process: Architecture (portfolio) and Dance/Performance Studies (audition). For a full list of these requirements, please visit:

you.rwu.edu/requirements. The University Honors Program Academically talented incoming first-year students may apply to the University Honors Program through the Common Application or online at honors.rwu.edu. Students interested in Honors are highly encouraged to apply under our EA application deadline to receive full consideration.

The average GPA of admitted students is 3.4/4.0 (about a B+/A-), and the middle 50% had GPAs ranging between 3.0 and 3.7. Please know that we review your performance in the context of your curriculum rigor and your environment. 44
