WELCOME TO SANFORD! As Mayor, it is my greatest pleasure to welcome you to the friendly city of Sanford. Sanford is a great historic city with a rich heritage that continues to offer growth and opportunity for our residents, business owners and visitors. Sanford is the largest city in Seminole County with 56,900 residents, an increase of 3,330 since the 2010 Census, a two and half percent increase since last year with no signs of slowing down. Sanford is one of the oldest incorporated cities in Central Florida, home to a wealth of history and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Brick-lined streets, elegant storefronts and large Victorian era homes throughout the downtown area immediately remind visitors of the city’s 19th century origins and its unique sense of place. We are a dynamic city, flanked by the St. Johns River and a historic downtown that attracts visitors arriving by Sanford’s Amtrak AutoTrain, the Orlando Sanford International Airport, and even by boat, at Sanford’s new full service marina. The downtown, which once featured feed stores and dry good sellers, is now a vibrant commercial center with antique shops, restaurants and art galleries. Sanford has over 200 events, hosting over 2 million visitors each year with an economic impact of $14 million. There is an overall upswing in economic development. Sanford has seen a continued increase in development activity. During the past eight months, the economic activity has tripled in Sanford. The city is very enthusiastic about all the new potential opportunities for increased development in downtown and throughout Sanford overall. The development projects and new businesses will have a significant positive economic impact for our community. Over 1,110 new jobs will be created in the near future. Sanford has experienced the most growth of any Seminole County city in the last ten years because we have it all, a one-of-a-kind waterfront, quality of life amenities, and the right infrastructure in place. The sky is the limit. Welcome to Sanford, Florida! Sincerely,
Jeff Triplett Mayor, City of Sanford

WELCOME to the OLD
HISTORIC DISTRICT NEL SON D. BE VERLY | PRE SIDENT | SANF ORD HIS TORIC TRUS T
Dear My Sanford Magazine Readers, Let me begin by congratulating the entire team at My Sanford Magazine on their one year anniversary. Since its inception, My Sanford Magazinehas covered a wide variety of topics which has showcased why we all love to live, work, and play in this awesome community. Keep up the great work! As the president of the Sanford Historic Trust, let me welcome you to Sanford’s Historic Districts. Sanford has a rich and robust heritage that has long been a competitive advantage over other cities. The Sanford Historic Trust exists to preserve this heritage and magnify its charm through education and stewardship. The charm of the historic districts is the envy of other cities and developments who try to emulate what we naturally have. Downtown Sanford and its historic districts are in the midst of a renaissance with new individuals and businesses purposefully coming here, who realize the authenticity that Sanford offers, and have a desire to leave it better than they found it. That is the key to Sanford’s success – people who understand why Sanford is so special and live it out every day through their volunteerism, stewardship, and passion for the community. Here’s a quick summary of four major entities in Sanford that protect and promote its heritage: HISTORIC PRESERVATION CODES - Also known as Schedule S or S Codes, they are tailored land development regulations enacted by the Sanford City Commission to safeguard the City’s historic charm and promote heritage tourism. The codes are overseen by the City’s Historic Preservation Officer and a five member quasi-judicial Historic Preservation Board (HPB) appointed by the City Commission. SANFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY - A nonprofit organization whose purpose is to foster interest in the history of Sanford and its 3
environs; it supports the efforts of the Sanford Museum where it routinely holds its meetings. SANFORD MUSEUM - Funded and operated by the City of Sanford it includes a various collections of city photographs, memoirs, family histories, yearbooks, city directories, maps, letters, memorabilia, and archived copies of The Sanford Herald (Sanford’s locally owned independent newspaper that started in 1908 and continues to this day.) SANFORD HISTORIC TRUST - A membership based nonprofit organization with no government affiliation that advocates for the architectural and historical heritage of the city through education and stewardship. Think of the Trust as a grassroots lobbyist for historic preservation. The Sanford Historic Trust helped formulate architectural guidelines drafted by renowned architect Andres Duany that were incorporated into Sanford’s Historic Preservation Codes (Schedule S); We sponsor the annual Holiday Tour of Homes – a Central Florida tradition that celebrates the historic structures of Sanford; We promote National Preservation Month functions; We support preservation, restoration, and beautification projects; We have installed over 150 historic lampposts around the downtown residential historic district (a project that is still active today and funded primarily by proceeds from the Holiday Tour of Homes, this year’s tour takes place December 5th – tickets are available on our website, www.SanfordHistoricTrust.org). If you love living, working, or playing in Sanford, then I invite you to join the Sanford Historic Trust and lend your passion in preserving what makes Sanford the absolute best. Sincerely,
Nelson D. Beverly President Sanford Historic Trust
SANFORD FROMTHE OUTSIDE JENNY WOLF E
Jenny Wolfe is the historic preservation expert for the city of St. Augustine. She also serves on the board for the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation which is the statewide non-profit preservation organization. Her education from the University of Florida includes an undergraduate and a graduate degree which culminated in a Master of Science in Architectural Studies. She enjoys visiting Florida’s diverse historic communities, outdoor activities such as biking and the beaches, cooking and ballroom dancing.
My first glimpse of Sanford was in the dark of the early morning as I headed to catch a flight out of Sanford International Airport. Little did I know that in the coming years Sanford would become much more to me than a point of departure. Through its active role in historic preservation on a statewide level, Sanford has become known as quite a historic destination. I have been back to Sanford over the years for historic preservation trainings, workshops, and retreats. I have grown to know Sanford through its friendly people, historic neighborhoods, and downtown commercial district. In each of my visits to Sanford I have been greeted with new experiences. My friendships with Sanfordites has grown. The town is lucky to have Christine Dalton, Jodi Rubin, and Shorty Robbins as local preservation leaders, each of whom sets and follows their own example. I have also come to know some of Sanford’s passionate preservation minded citizens, such as Julia Wright Brunson, the steward of the beautiful red brick Gothic Revival Saint James African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Georgetown. These Sanfordites have been wonderful ambassadors for the city, and have a clear sense of pride for the historic fabric of the community. With an initial interest in architecture, the built environment and its response to the landscape has always been an attraction for me. Sanford does not disappoint. When I visit, I enjoy the scenic drive into town along Lake Monroe, with its beautiful vistas. It is an immediate and soothing balm to the stress of the interstate drive. Against this beautiful backdrop, the city layers unfold southward from the active RiverWalk and marina, to the historic downtown network of commercial buildings and walkable streets, followed by the residential neighborhoods with their own mini-nodes of parks and community centers. These beautiful sites creates a physical and emotional attraction to Sanford drawing in businesses, supportings community events, and providing an unique place to live. Sanford is emblematic of how historic preservation contributes to the quality of life. I am excited just thinking about strolling along 1st Street where I already have favorite food and drink establishments like Christos (I am a pizza addict and this place hits the spot!) and The Imperial craft brew and wine bar. The downtown scene is so comfortable, inviting, and lively - one can follow the sounds to discover a new adventure. These are the same sounds that Christine and myself to experience a New Orleans style jazz band playing in the yard of La Sirena Gorda, beneath twinkling lights. When the jazz band wrapped up for the night we took a walk to the award winning Sanford Avenue, and experienced one of the newly minted brew pubs along the way. On another visit, I had the most enjoyable and beautiful evening under the sky with the season opener of “Movies in the Square.” which had a small town feel, welcoming to a visitor like myself. There is no shortage of the type of experience you can have in Sanford, As your neighbor on the other end of the St. Johns River, I encourage you to continuosusly welcome the diversity of small businesses, reuse and preserve your historic building stock, support your parks and museums, all of which makes for happy residents, happy visitors, and a happy community.

FACE OF THE DOWNTOWN
SANFORD 5
OWNER-DIRECTOR JEANINE TAYLOR ART GALLERY
JEANINE TAYLOR PERL A B . CROSBY Q. YOUR CAREER AS AN EDUCATOR IN THE FIELD OF TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN AN ART GALLERY? R. While I have only had my residence in Sanford for a year, I moved my gallery here 15 years ago from Winter Park. I love the old Florida feel here and the culture of a small southern community. I was born and raised in Miami, graduated from Florida State University with a degree in education and taught in the Florida public school system for 14 years. A Fortune 500 Corporation selling large networked computers and curriculum hired me as a consultant to train teachers. From there I went into sales and earned a very good living but led a very hectic life. During Florida’s Sesquicentennial year, I realized not many native Floridians still resided in our state and new comers needed to find a cultural sense of place to enrich their community experiences. I developed a small business in Longwood that celebrated all things culturally in Florida and called it, “The Florida Emporium.” I sold art, literature and indigenous food items like Datil Pepper Jelly (only grown around St. Augustine). From there I realized that I was enamored with southern art and culture and soon specialized in contemporary folk art from the Deep South. Q. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SANFORD? R. At the invitation of two of my friends and art collectors, I moved my business to the historic Hotchkiss building in downtown Sanford. I love the small town atmosphere in Sanford and the exciting growth we are experiencing. Q. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING IN SANFORD? R. I love the people. I love hearing first time visitors compliment my gallery and the Gallery on First studio artists. I enjoy being able to ride my bike to work with my French Bulldog, Frankie, in the basket behind me. Some people come into the gallery just to see Frankie. He has business cards that contain his famous title, Senior Greeter, and his working hours! Q. WOULD YOU DEFINE THE HISTORIC DISTRICT IN DOWNTOWN SANFORD AS A CITY WHERE ART IS APPRECIATED? R. Much of the Sanford community values and appreciates art and knows how economic development can be enhanced and accelerated with culture and art.
Q. DOES THE YOUNGER GENERATION, IN YOUR OPINION, HAVE AN APPRECIATION FOR ART? R. I see Millennials developing an appreciation for original art not only from my southern folk art gallery but also the studio artists of Gallery on First that reside here with us. Young buyers are surprised to see an original piece of art can be as affordable as a framed print and appreciates in value unlike many reproductions. My gallery manager, Mary Shaw and I stress the value of collecting art rather than just buying art. There is a story behind all art. I go to great expense to bring the artist into the gallery when I host a show for them. Many of the artists are well known and it is a coup for Sanford to host them as well as my gallery. They love downtown Sanford and often comment on the friendliness within the community. Q. GO MAGAZINE, AIRTRAN’S INFLIGHT PUBLICATION, VOTED JEANNIE TAYLOR’S FOLK ART AS ONE OF THE “TWENTY ESSENTIAL GALLERIES IN THE COUNTRY.” PLEASE, TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT! R. Shortly after I moved my business to Sanford, I was chosen one of the “twenty essential galleries in the country” by AirTran’s GO Inflight magazine. My fellow recipients were quite prestigious urban galleries and I was absolutely delighted to see Sanford mentioned along with galleries in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Chicago, etc. Q. YOU RECENTLY INTRODUCED CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP WHICH EMPHASIZES “DISCOVERING YOUR PURPOSE AND LIVING YOUR DREAMS.” TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS INTERESTING SEMINAR. R. I introduced a class recently, Creative Entrepreneurship, because I want to start giving back. I had no idea where my business was going in the early days. I overcame personal doubts and walked through doors that opened for me. I have a very strong spiritual connection and everything I have was designed by someone bigger, smarter and more powerful than me. I want to encourage those that have a desire to earn their own living doing something they love in a community that embraces change. We need to fill these empty buildings in Sanford with creative small businesses.

THE
HOLIDAY
TOUR OF HOMES NEL SON D. BE VERLY
Is an annual event that the Sanford Historic Trust has hosted for 27 years and is a holiday tradition in Central Florida. The tour is self-guided and takes place the first weekend of December. If you’ve never experienced our Holiday Tour of Homes, here is what to expect. Imagine a cold winter’s evening and walking along candlelit streets covered by a canopy of trees. There are numerous illuminated spheres in the trees that indicate which homes are part of the tour. As live music fills the air with the sounds of the season, you are welcomed into historic homes that are decorated with holiday cheer. Along the way, locally acclaimed restaurants provide drinks and food as you discover each new home and the stories and beauty that are within them.
The Trust is forever grateful to the homeowners who graciously open their doors and hearts to the community. Without their participation, the Holiday Tour would not be possible. The Trust also appreciates the volunteers and the many hours they donate throughout the year to make this a successful event. If you have never experienced a Holiday Tour of Homes, make 2015 the start of your new holiday tradition. This year’s tour is December 5th from 4PM to 9PM in the Old Sanford Historic District. For more information please visit our website www.SanfordHistoricTrust.org.

SANFORD’S FOUNDER
H E N R Y S H E LT O N S A N F O R D SANF ORD MUSEUM STAF F
Henry Sanford’s memory is preserved at the Sanford museum, which contains a collection of his letters, books, and personal items. The museum is free and open to the public. HENRY SHELTON SANFORD WAS BORN IN WOODBURY, CONNECTICUT IN 1823. In 1836, his family moved to Derby, Connecticut near the site of a brass tack factory which his father had built with his brother-in-law. When Henry Sanford was 18, his father died. Sanford took his inheritance and began a series of journeys abroad which would lead him to a career in the diplomatic service. After intense study of European languages and law, Sanford earned posts at several embassies. In 1861, President Lincoln appointed him as Minister Diplomatic Resident to Belgium. This began an important connection with that country, which spanned three decades. During the Civil War, Sanford created a network of secret agents in England and France to track and thwart of the Confederacy in Europe. These secret service operations focused on the procurement of war materials to support the Union. In 1862, Sanford presented cannons to the Minnesota militia. In return, he received an honorary commission as Major General. In 1864, Sanford married Gertrude Dupuy, a Philadelphia socialite. The Sanfords had seven children. In 1870, Sanford purchased land along Lake Monroe from former Confederate General Joseph Finegan. Sanford paid $18,400 for 12,547 acres which would later become the City of Sanford. The city was incorporated in 1877, financed and promoted through the efforts of the Florida Land
and Colonization Company. Henry Sanford’s special interest in Florida was his citrus grove, Belair, located just outside the city limits. The grove was an experiment station for the citrus industry. More than 140 varieties of citrus were imported by Sanford and tested for adaptability to the Florida climate. Unfortunately, Sanford’s investment in the state’s burgeoning citrus industry was not profitable. The Sanfords usually only came to Florida in the winter. During a visit in the winter of 1891, Henry Sanford became ill, and was taken to Healing Springs, Virginia where he died in May 1891.

GETTING to KNOW REG GARNER PHOTOGRAPHER
PERL A B . CROSBY
"My favorite experiences are traveling throughout North America in my RV Camper. I can pack more gear and have the ability to stop anywhere along the way to take a picture. When I wake up in my camper, I don’t have far to go to photograph the sunrise and spend the day afield. I can spend a few hours or a few days at the same location." Q. WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN PHOTOGRAPHY? WHAT DOES PHOTOGRAPHY MEAN TO YOU?
R. My father was a hobbyist photographer and I learned photography from him when I was a teenager. Of course, it was all film back then and I captured a lot of black/white because we could develop the negatives and make prints in the bathroom which we converted to a darkroom. Photography has come a long way but the principles are certainly the same. I had the opportunity to attend a lecture and meet Ansel Adams and my love and appreciation for landscape photography began. To be clear, photography is a side business for me. My career (what pays the bills) is in large-format color printing. My company, Triangle Reprographics, is my family business in Orlando where I’ve worked for 40 years. We print on inkjet printers up to 16 feet wide and make large wall murals from photographs and other graphic applications. Q. YOUR WORK HAS TAKEN YOU AROUND THE WORLD. TELL US ABOUT THAT!
R. I have traveled abroad to India, Katmandu, Poland, Prague, England, Wales, and Scotland. However, I think my favorite experiences are traveling throughout North America in my RV Camper. I can pack more gear and have the
11
ability to stop anywhere along the way to take a picture. When I wake up in my camper, I don’t have far to go to photograph the sunrise and spend the day afield. I can spend a few hours or a few days at the same location. Last month I took my camera and RV on a 3,500 mile, 16 state journey making a big loop to New England and back. Q. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SANFORD?
R. Sanford is my home. My great-grandparents moved here around 1910. My grandparents had their first date at the Princess Theatre before there was even sound at the theatre. My Grandfather, James Dunn was the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation for Sanford. He was responsible for building many of the parks in Sanford. Today there is a park in Sanford named after him. My grandmother Minnie-Bess Garner owned and operated two beauty salons in Sanford, one downtown on 2nd Street and another in the lobby of the Mayfair Inn. My great grandfather, Elmer Echols, moved to Sanford from Alabama around 1910 and started Echols Bedding Company. The main store was located where Cindy’s Dance is located now. I grew up on the St Johns River, hunting, fishing, and camping along its banks. After living most of my adult life in Orlando, I moved back to
Sanford about ten years ago and own a home just a few doors down from where my grandparents lived for most of their lives. Q. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING IN SANFORD AND DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE MEMORIES THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?
R. I love taking pictures around Seminole County where I grew up. I enjoy exploring lakes, rivers, natural springs, and even in the cypress swamp where not too many would dare to venture. My photography allows me to share this beauty with people that may never see these natural resources and unique eco systems that Florida has to offer. Q. YOU WERE HONORED AS SEMINOLE COUNTY'S 2014 ARTIST OF THE YEAR. TELL ME ABOUT THAT.
R. This was absolutely an honor for it was unsolicited and I was quite humbled to learn that I was even nominated. I am currently working for Seminole County providing photographs to use for their social media and brochures. I have a large Facebook following of about 1,200 friends. The Comments and "Likes" on pictures I post inspire me to take more photos. I am currently working on a new project of high resolution images that can be expanded to large wall murals, plexiglass, and metal prints.

P: USTED FUNDÓ LA PRIMERA REVISTA CONOCIDA EN LA CIUDAD DE SANFORD?
R. Yes I did! After I became a U.S. Citizen, I labored over finding my niche. I wanted to make a contribution to my community and the idea to start a positive community magazine was a passion that evolved inside of me. I discussed various potential formats with my husband and others and decided to include a Spanish translation of some articles in an effort to not only appeal to our English readers but to expand the contents to our Hispanic population who may struggle with understanding English. I am proud of the reception that "My Sanford Magazine" has received in this community and it has been my desire reach out to the public with our positive message through various social media outlets as well.

Q. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SANFORD?
Well, I have to give credit to my husband. We made the decision to relocate to Central Florida and it was his research that discovered Sanford which we now know to have been well founded. We wanted access to an international airport that would afford easier travel to my native country. Both Benny and I have children and grandchildren who reside in different states and countries. It was our desire to be close to a larger city but live in a more relaxed, community where we could get to know our neighbors and make new friends...and we found it!

SANFORD
A MAJORINPLAYER THE REGION LISA HOLDER
THERE IS AN OVERALL UPSWING IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT and Sanford has become a major player in the region. During the past 6 months, the economic activity has tripled in Sanford. Through the direction of Bob Turk, the City’s Economic Development Director and Executive Director of the Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), development and real estate inquiries are booming. Bob meets with at least 2 developers and real estate professionals every week. The Sanford CRA was just about to sunset after 15 years of incredible results (just look around downtown), but after much due diligence by City staff, the private sector, and the CRA Board members, all are most delighted that the CRA has been extended by Seminole County for another 10 years. There is more work to be done and plenty of opportunity in Sanford. The sky is the limit. Currently, there are over $34M of planned downtown Sanford improvements with $3M focused on new development on Sanford Avenue alone. Last year, Sanford Avenue was recently revitalized with a $2.4 million streetscape, a well-made investment for residents, visitors, and current and future business owners. The
19
revitalization of Sanford Avenue is a direct result of the development that is being proposed in downtown Sanford. People and business are investing in this great historic city. Hungry for choices? Sanford residents and visitors will soon see four new restaurants opening in downtown within the next several months. In addition, there are four new brew businesses on Sanford Avenue that have opened or are currently on the radar to open. 113 S. Palmetto Avenue has been purchased and will be soon redeveloped. This includes the historic 19th century county jail site that will be restored to its original luster. Another added gem to the crown of our downtown. You may have noticed the old strip shopping center at 312 East Commercial has been demolished. This site will now be part of the downtown Sanford Catalyst Site. A request for qualifications (RFQ) for the downtown Sanford Catalyst Site has been received from three major development teams. The Catalyst Site will include housing, retail, restaurants, parking, and a hotel site. Bob Turk is also working on the recruitment of several new manufacturing companies. Bob believes the city is very enthusiastic

about all the new potential opportunities for increased development in downtown and throughout Sanford overall. The development projects and new businesses will bring much-needed economic impact for residents, visitors, and businesses. Over 200 new jobs will be created in the near future. The City is a business and transportation hub for Central Florida which includes: the Orlando Sanford International Airport, Amtrak AutoTrain, Interstate 4, SunRail, St. John’s River, and CSX Railroad. Sanford continues to offer a superior mix of economic development opportunities to new and existing businesses, either in the retail or in the industrial sectors. Through marketing and outreach efforts, the city continues to promote Sanford as a profitable place to open new businesses. The Economic Development office also provides assistance with Job Growth Incentive Funds (JGI), Qualified Target Industry Tax Refunds (QTI), Capital Investment Tax Credit (CITC) and High Impact Performance Incentive Grants (HIPI). Being mindful of this city’s genuine and rich history, Sanford is on the cusp of greatness. The land, opportunity, and professional expertise of city staff is taking Sanford to the next level. TIPS to STAGE and SELL YOUR HOME L AUR A S. FALCON
"Most buyers form an opinion about a home within the first 7-10 seconds of arriving."
A HOME, WHICH IS BEAUTIFULLY STAGED, TENDS TO SELL FASTER THAN A HOUSE THAT IS NOT. Also, vacant houses are frequently perceived to have a lower value than homes that are staged and often receive "low-ball" offers from buyers who sense the owner is desperate to sell. A good staging gets a house ready for the market. It adds personal touches to make the house feel like a home, causing buyers to have a desire to inhabit it. Through staging, we aim to convey peace, harmony and relaxation. We make it inviting. We want prospective buyers to view it as the perfect place to raise a family, enjoy working on new projects, or being in the company of a favorite pet. We must keep in mind the convenient and practical placement of certain items to help buyers interpret functionality. Remember the main objective is to achieve the successful sale of the property.
Turn your bathroom into a “spa“ Stage the outdoors as well Get your house sparkling clean, striking a balance between clean and lived-in Create and portray a lifestyle that people are looking for "I remember, in my adolescent years, returning home from school and spending my afternoon hours re-arranging the furniture and decorations in the house where I lived with my parents. When they would get home they wouldn’t recognize the house."

“FLORIDA’S CHRISTINE DALTON, AICP
TRAVELING IS A PASSION OF MINE, and I enjoy visiting historic communities any chance I can. It’s no wonder that Savannah is my favored weekend trip destination. At 3 hours and 45 minutes away, Savannah has an almost gravitational pull on me. After multiple visits to that amazing and beautiful city, I’ve come to learn more about its development and how it has become one of top destinations for heritage tourism in the United States. From my visits and observations, I am convinced that Sanford can achieve recognition much the same way Savannah has: as a historic city in which Preservation, Arts, and Culture define its past and future. Here are some ways in which Savannah and Sanford are uncannily similar: ORIGINAL TOWN PLANS Savannah was created on the south shore of the Savannah River. The town’s founder, General James Oglethorpe, laid out the community with an orderly grid street network, alleys, and of course – Savannah’s famous squares. 25
Sanford was created on the south shore of Lake Monroe. Sanford’s founder, General Henry Sanford, laid out the community with an orderly grid street network, alleys, and city block sized parks. The waterfronts of both cities were developed for industrial purposes, but over time have transitioned to become more focused on civic beauty. SENSE OF PLACE Savannah’s sense of place is defined by its historical, architectural, and cultural character. Savannah is a photographer’s delight, with its shaded, tree-lined streets draped in Spanish moss. Savannah’s squares are framed by beautifully restored buildings, which are protected by the local historic district designation. Properties within the historic district are highly sought after, and property values reflect this. Sound familiar? DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH Savannah and Sanford both experienced periods of disinvestment from the 1950s through the 1970s. This time

SAVANNAH” period included the speculative demolition of historic structures for future development which never came. Additionally, both cities became “rough around the edges,” as historic buildings were not maintained and became derelict. The turning point for both communities was creation of their historic districts, which resulted in protection of their best assets – their historic buildings. LOCAL PRESERVATION EFFORTS Savannah is home to the Historic Savannah Foundation, a local non-profit historic preservation group whose mission is to protect the architectural heritage of the city. The organization was formed by active and involved citizens who envisioned that protection of the city’s architectural heritage would reverse the blight that the city had suffered from the 1950s through 1970s. Sanford is home to the Sanford Historic Trust, a non-profit group which developed for much the same reasons as the Historic Savannah Foundation. Both organizations
sponsor amazing holiday tours of historic homes as well as annual preservation awards. Both organizations have perhaps the most active and involved citizens of their cities. Savannah is a charming, historic city of international renown, with a local economy that thrives from the billions of dollars spent by tourists there annually. Sanford’s reputation as a destination for Historic Preservation, Arts, and Culture is growing. It will be interesting to see how Sanford’s local economy develops as the word of “Florida’s Savannah” spreads. Christine Dalton works as the Historic Preservation Oficer and Community Planner for the City of Sanford. Christine is passionate about historic places. She teaches Historic Preservation at her Alma Mater, Rollins College. Her interests include all things historic, sailing, teaching, mentoring, and the arts.

The Sanford Community Garden is celebrating it's fifth anniversary this year. It has been serving the community by bringing gardeners together where they can learn from each other about everything from organic ways to handle snails to soil amendments for growing better arugula. Quarterly guest speakers offer their wisdom as well, and recently the garden began to collaborate with Amin of State of Harmony Farms, who joins them on their meetings and events to share her garden tips and tricks. Sheila DiPace, the current president of the garden has big dreams for the space. "It's never been just a garden to me. It's a sanctuary, with enormous potential." In the first quarter of 2016 the city will be creating a lease situation that the garden must adhere to, but will bring them more room to grow and more creative freedom, but more financial responsibilities as well. "We will soon have water bills and insurance responsibilities, which forces us into a fundraising situation, which we have never had to do before." The expansion will bring room for more beds, but also an area she wants to use to create an educational area for children. "The children are our future, and that is especially true when it comes to learning how to be stewards to the planet. Learning to grow your own food creates sense of wonder as well as self reliance that will carry them through their lifetimes," Sheila said. Recently she has spoken with Ixora, Project2100 and Lowes for possible collaborations during the expansion project which will happen between January and April of next year. To jumpstart the forthcoming expenses next year, the garden officers have created their first inaugural raffle, utilizing $2,000 in donations collected from many of the best spots in

WAYS
to be a
BETTER NEIGHBOR LINDA BUSCH
WE OFTEN WHINE AND COMPLAIN about how bad things are getting around our neighborhood and our state. The truth of the matter is, each one of us has the opportunity to make a difference in our neighborhoods. The good and bad we see in our society at any given point is always an indicator of how well we are running our personal and family life. It is also a reflection of how we are treating each other as neighbors. Life in general can be better if we abide by a very simple formula: working as a team to solve common problems and respecting each other during this process. We are more likely to manage our community matters in a more efficient manner if we support each other as we work towards achieving our common goals. If we want things to be better, we must start improving ourselves and our family life. It is never too late to be a better neighbor. You will be amazed at how small changes can have a huge impact in community dynamics. Here are some ways we can be better neighbors:
1. SAY “HELLO” TO YOUR NEIGHBORS 2. MAKE NEW NEIGHBORS FEEL WELCOME when you see them. Don’t forget to smile!
Start a conversation about the finest pizza place in town or inform them of trash pick-up dates and times.
3. GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS
what they do for a living and what their daily routine consist of. Similarly, give them information about your family life. You can avoid possible conflicts by discussing what could be annoying to each other, such as determining what time works best to mow the lawn.
4. BE MINDFUL OF NOISES
coming from various sources such as music, machines, household appliances, TVs, and small kids screaming and jumping around. This is especially important if you share partition walls with your neighbors. Show consideration by telling your neighbords ahead of time if you plan to have a party. If you enjoy spending time with your neighbors, invite them to join the party.
THAT NOT EVERYBODY 5. REMEMBER IS ANIMAL FRIENDLY
which could diminish their level of tolerance towards your pets.
29
Keep your dog on a leash and be sure to clean up after your pets. If you are unable to control barking or whining, seek expert advice.
6. DO NOT INCONVENIENCE OTHERS
Do not block or inconvenience others when parking your vehicle. Avoid slamming doors or shining headlights into your neighbor’s windows. If you miss collection, bring it back onto your property. Keep your trash area clean and debris free. Above all, keep the channels of communication open with your neighbors. Remind them they should feel comfortable approaching you if you happen to be doing anything that may be disturbing to them. Be a better neighbors by applying the golden rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated.
