eel-Schaffer, a multi-disciplined engineering, planning, and construction management firm, is helping Sanford residents and visitors get around more easily. A grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is allowing Neel-Schaffer to work as a consultant with the city of Sanford, studying all modes of transportation to and within the city, with a focus primarily on the downtown and waterfront areas. The purpose of the study is to develop a Multi-Modal Master Plan that will address transportation connectivity, accessibility, and ease of use to promote more choices when visiting the downtown area. The study will showcase Sanford’s waterfront as a unique attribute of the city, identifying possible routes for water taxis that would utilize existing and new boat docks. Possible stops along Lake Monroe include the Monroe Harbour Marina, the Central Florida Zoo, and Lake Monroe Park across the lake. Other water modes such as kayaks and canoes will be accomodated. “The key to this project is making sure all of Sanford’s modes of transportation work efficiently together,” says Ginger Hoke, PLA, Neel-Schaffer project manager. “When people

visit the area, we want them to know about all of the great things to do in Sanford, but we also want to make it easier to get here and find your way around. Transportation should enhance the experience.” According to Rosemary Aldridge, P.E., NeelSchaffer is excited to be working on such a fun project that has the potential to touch every visitor to Sanford. Since opening the Sanford office in 2016, the team has helped to increase pedestrian safety with new sidewalks and to improve drainage. “Neel-Schaffer’s Sanford office is one of our 38 offices throughout the southeastern U.S. providing engineering support in transportation, water/wastewater utilities, civil, structural, and drainage design, solid waste, and telecommunications services. Our Complete Communities Group offers municipalities planning and grant expertise to help get projects off the ground and ensure input from all of our technical disciplines as well as end user groups,” says Aldridge. “This Multi-Modal Master Plan is a perfect example of this approach and the result will be a fun and efficient transportation system with something for everyone. We want everyone to ‘Get in the Sanford Mode.’” n

see Sanford growing. I think fun and special events are key in that growth. I think that’s the only way to draw people in who have never been to Sanford before.” Williams’ love for Sanford began over 17 years ago, when he first arrived from his hometown of Denton, TX, and felt an immediate connection to Sanford’s historic, small-town vibe. “Developmentally, Sanford is really similar in size and growth, but 10 or 15 years behind Denton,” says Williams. “It reminds me of my hometown with the look of it, and in the way it’s growing and the style it’s growing. Essentially I felt at home when I moved here.”

PAUL WILLIAMS SEEKS ONLY THE BEST FOR SANFORD

T

his issue of My Sanford Magazine focuses on delivering the Best of Sanford. From Best Veterinarian to Best Family Fun Day, our extensive list is a true showcase of all that’s great about Sanford. A list of this type would not be complete without shining a spotlight on Paul Williams. A jack of all trades, Williams not only owns and operates two award-winning establishments — West End Trading Company (Best Wings) and Celery City Craft (Best Beer Selection) — he also helps setup and run the majority of special events that happen around town. We’re talking Pints ‘N Paws, Sanford Mardi Gras, St. Paddy’s Fire Truck Pull & Festival, Julep’s and Jockey’s, Sofa ‘n Suds, the list could go on and on. Pick any city event

happening on the Sanford social scene, and it’s likely Williams is involved in the planning. Not only are these events a rousing good time for all, but they are also an excellent source of fundraising, with proceeds going to local charities. Williams also serves on the Sanford Tourism board and is a co-founder of Keeping Sanford Sparkling, a community cleanup program. With all he does for the city, it’s not surprising Williams has been named Best Sanford Promoter/Visionary for 2018. Williams’ motivation is twofold. “It’s part of my business plan,” admits Williams, with many of the events involving some form of hosting from one or both of his establishments. “But I also

And home has translated to family, with Williams now married to wife Katie and the two are focused on raising their two children: Sadie (aged 4) and Dallas (aged 2). Sanford hospitality is a family commonality, with his in-laws operating another popular Sanford business: The District. Among all the events he puts on, Williams labels Pints ‘N Paws as his passion. The event came about after Williams had lost his 13-yearold lab. A connection with Judy Sarullo, founder of Pet Rescue by Judy, helped Williams recognize he was ready to adopt another dog. Now Williams owns two dogs introduced by Sarullo (seen on our cover: Bubby and Charlie). The idea of a craft beer festival benefiting Sarulllo’s organization followed soon after, with the popular event now in its eighth year. There’s no doubt Williams has accomplished a lot for the city, but he still has ideas for more. “I would love to see Sanford capitalize more on tourism,” says Williams. “Because I have seen that with the emerging bar/brewery/restaurant entertainment scene.” He hopes his actions will encourage others to fall in love with Sanford just like he did. “You can come to a place that’s still real — it’s not fake. There is no Disney affect here. It’s a real getaway to a place that still is untapped and still has historical integrity to it,” says Williams. “It’s a hidden gem.” n

Dear Friends, The spring issue of My Sanford Magazine is dedicated to the winners of our readers' choice Best of Sanford awards. This marks the 3rd year of our celebration. A list of the winners can be found starting on page 6 with our Best of Sanford Guide. We could not be prouder to recognize all the great work, service and dedication the winners provide to customers. We also get a first-hand account of the city’s special day spent celebrating baseball hall-of-famer Tim Raines, as contributed by Mike Smith (page 38). As you know, I was born in the Dominican Republic and I am proud to share with you that Raines played in the Dominican Republic during the Winter League ball season of 1981. See video of Raines here, provided by Licey.com: https:// bit.ly/2TRg1fH Other articles include a cover story about the great community works of Paul Williams (page 2), written by Julie Capps; Leon Konieczny’s review of all the fabulous restaurant winners at the Best of Sanford (page 24); and a look at the growing popularity of Cider Beer (page 27), written by Drink Sanford. All of Sanford let the good times roll at this year’s Best of Sanford 2018 awards. Held January 22 at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, local business owners, city officials and citizens all gathered to help celebrate this year’s winners as selected by the readers of My Sanford Magazine. The evening's festive Mardi Gras theme included entertainment by Kid Dutch, an appearance by Phantasmagoria, and a special attendance by members of Visit Baton Rouge (Louisiana). The VIP After-Party, hosted by The Smiling Bison in collaboration with The Tennessee Truffle, featured music and tasty bites from Chef Robbie Lamison (The Smiling Bison) and Chef Nat Russell (The Tennessee Truffle). All profits from the evening went to two local nonprofits: Love Missions and One Hope International.

Moving to Sanford?

THE SANFORD HOUSING MARKET

T

he Florida market statistics for 2018 are in and it looks like last year was not only a great year statewide but also locally! As expected, after a rather slow fourth quarter, things still look up when combining all the data. And rest assured, as we approach the end of the first quarter of 2019, the market continues to be hot. Low interest rates and an overall low inventory of homes continue to keep this market very active! Below is a look at the numbers for 2018 and a comparison of Sanford to overall Seminole County. Thank You For Voting Us Best Chiropractor in Sanford!

MEET OMAR M. RIVERA, D.C. Rivera Family Chiropractic Center

Dr. Omar M. Rivera, known to most as Dr. Omar, grew up in Miami. At a young age, he watched how a simple, safe chiropractic adjustment transformed the lives of his parents and family members who suffered from back pain and scoliosis. SEMINOLE STATE COLLEGE PRESIDENT

DR. GEORGIA LORENZ B Y P E R L A B. C R O S B Y

Q: I KNOW YOU ARE STILL GETTING SETTLED, BUT HOW HAS THE MOVE GONE SO FAR? WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU ARE ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR NEW LOCATION AND JOB?

The community here has been so welcoming of me and Mike. We have felt right at home from the beginning because of that warm welcome. It has been a joy getting to know people. I have been impressed by the ambitions and aspirations of the Central Florida region to grow and create broad-based prosperity for all. I want Seminole State College to continue being a leader in those efforts, ensuring the citizens of Seminole County and Central Florida are equipped to enter the workforce and excel as new opportunities emerge. My favorite thing about my new location and job are the people that I get to work with every day. They are deeply committed to our students and to the College, and they bring a level of professionalism to their work that really motivates me. 18 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | S P R I N G 2 019

KELLY CLORE WITH KABIKI PHOTOGRAPHY

A: The move has gone well. I have to give credit to my husband, Mike, who took care of moving our household cross country from start to finish, allowing me to focus on my work at the College. I really enjoy the sense of place and community in Seminole County and Central Florida. There are many things I loved about being a resident of Los Angeles, but the sheer volume of the region can allow that sense of place to be diminished. For example, there were more than ten open access community colleges within a 15- or 20-mile radius.

KELLY CLORE WITH KABIKI PHOTOGRAPHY

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR SHORT-TERM GOALS IN YOUR NEW POSITION, AND WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS? HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOU TO BUILD A LEGACY AT SEMINOLE STATE COLLEGE? A: My short-term goals include the completion of two construction projects on the Sanford/ Lake Mary Campus. The L Building project includes remodeling the first and second floors

and creating a plaza in the south courtyard. Construction began in June 2018 and is expected to be complete this summer with the facility opening to the public during the Fall 2019 academic term. Last month work began on the remodeling and renovation of the existing H Building to create the new Athletic & Fitness Wellness Center. The 40-year-old building, which has been vacant since 2015, will be remodeled and re-configured in two phases to accommodate today’s needs of the Athletic Department and the wellness/ fitness needs of the College’s students, faculty, and staff. The project, which will occupy a reconfigured 26,000-square-foot space, will be developed in multiple stages as part of an overall project design and build plan. We are also embarking on a new capital planning process considering all of the College’s facilities and sites across Seminole County. Concurrently I have instituted a new strategic planning process to chart and develop our course for the next 5 to 10 years and beyond. This process includes contributions from those inside our college community, our educational partners, and our community and business partners and will be completed in 2020. In addition, we continue to innovate and research best practices and trends to enable us to provide better service and a high-quality

education to all students, regardless of their personal circumstances or career aspirations.

Q: OUTSIDE OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAPABILITIES, WHAT ARE SOME THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF THAT YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW? WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM? A: One of my personal passions has been helping current and former foster youth make a successful transition to self-sustaining adulthood. For several years I have been a Board member of First Place for Youth, which is a national organization headquartered in California that serves this population through stable housing, education, and employment assistance. First Place is a national leader in this work, providing excellent services to youth as well as increasing awareness and changing perceptions. I have always been a swimmer. I was a synchronized swimmer from age seven through college. Now I enjoy swimming at the Lake Mary YMCA for fitness, and I have met some great people there to swim with.

Siempre he sido nadadora. Q: REGARDING YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE, WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO BRING TO THE NEW JOB? A: I bring insight and experience from a community college system in California that instituted pathways to careers for students, and an institution, Santa Monica College, that has transferred the most students of any California Community College to the University of California and other institutions for 28 years. I value fiscal responsibility, strategic planning for the medium- and long-term, and shared governance and the ways in which it benefits a college. People support what they help to create, and I look forward to working with people across the college and with our legislature and our business, education, and community partners

to encourage participation, engagement, and innovation. More Than Broadway in Downtown Sanford B Y R H O N D A D E AT O N

T

he unique charm of Historic Downtown Sanford comes alive at Theater West End, a new venue offering professional, high-quality Broadway theater productions in an intimate and ultra-chic, industrial setting. Founding partners Quinn Roberts and Derek Critzer grew up in the performing arts arena. Their work as actors, set designers, directors, and stage technicians led to a passion for well-crafted, live theater productions. When the opportunity to purchase the recently closed Princess Theatre arose, Roberts and Critzer jumped at the chance to open their own theater. “There was something about the vibe of downtown Sanford that appealed to us,” Roberts says of the decision.

J.P. PHOTOGRAPHY

Facing a short amount of time and using a lot of sweat equity, the two worked quickly to open the venue. Theater West End made its debut with a production of “The Color Purple,” followed soon after with a production of “The Bridges of Madison County.” Next came two high school productions — “Heathers: The Musical” and “Rent” — with the later production earning extended performances due to sold out shows. The two credit much of their success to the theater’s intimate setting, which provides a more personal connection to the audience. Critzer also credits their keen sense of right casting, a commitment to live music for every production, and the availability of top-notch talent found in Central Florida. Local youth benefit from that success with the group’s educational offerings. Youth arts programs are geared to nurture the intellectual

growth and artistic expression in all aspects of live theater production; creating opportunities to experience professional theater and develop future talent. “We’ve compared a student’s first audition to their second, and their stage presence has grown by leaps and bounds,” says Roberts. “We’re growing these kids into professional performers.” Between teaching and live productions, improvements to the audience experience are ongoing, with newly installed padded seating and beverage service examples of such improvements. If you’ve yet to experience a Broadway production, have an affinity for quality, live performance or simply have the itch to showcase your personal talents, you can find it all at Theater West End.

PODCAST BY LISA HOLDER

Podcasts are digital audio files often focused on a particular topic or theme that can be easily downloaded from the Internet to a computer or mobile device. In the age of digital communications, it is important for municipal governments to be on the cutting edge of technology as it relates to communication. The “Sanford Says” Podcast, produced by the city, offers an innovative way for the city to deliver content to the public on demand. The podcast dovetails nicely with the city’s priority to increase citizen engagement. In addition to utilizing city social media and promoting the city website to get helpful information to the public, the podcast offers another accessible communication channel that provides citizens an opportunity to listen and learn when convenient to them. Hosted by Sanford Communications Officer Lisa Holder, the podcast platform delivers helpful 22 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | S P R I N G 2 019

city information, directly from the source, in a friendly, relaxed, discussion-type setting. One goal of this new venture into city podcasting is to be consistent by releasing new content weekly. Since Mayor Jeff Triplett helped launch the first podcast session in mid-January, there have been a variety of guests and topics including a discussion on building permits, an examination of economic development news, and even a visit by the city’s Fire Chief, Craig Radzak, sharing the latest information about the Sanford Fire Department. The plan is to eventually invite members of the Sanford business community on the podcast. And with over 200 special events occuring in Sanford every year, the list of future possible topics is endless. “Podcasting in general has not been a common practice for municipalitities. It is changing and headed in that direction,” says Holder. “Here in the City of Sanford we’d like to believe we are one step ahead. We are hopeful the podcast will open more doors to transparency and enhance citizen engagement through

increased communication of city information, sharing helpful facts, in a storytelling format.” The name of the podcast, “Sanford Says,” was chosen after employees of the city were asked to submit creative titles. Brigitte Stephenson, Sanford Museum Assistant, came up with the winner after being voted the number one name by city staff. All are encouraged to plug-in to “Sanford Says.” Whether at home, in your car, enjoying the RiverWalk or relaxing at a city park, the ease and accessability of this podcast means the city’s helpful, in-depth information can be enjoyed anywhere, when it’s convenient to the listener! SANFORD FOOD SCENE

A HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

PACKED FULL OF

WINNERS BY LEON KONIECZNY

S

anford’s Historic Downtown has more award-winning, locallyowned food establishments than anywhere in the country — and maybe even the world, it would seem. This year’s presentation of the Best of Sanford 2018 awards made this a proven fact. As voted on by readers of My Sanford Magazine, the awards showcased the multitude of locally owned establishments that can be found in Sanford. When making your next selection for dining out, be sure to check out one (or more) of these award winners! Winning one or more awards each year, the King of all is Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café (Best European Cuisine). Open over 18 years now and currently undergoing another expansion, “The Tree” (as locals know it) is a nationally recognized, award-winning German restaurant that draws people from all over. Hot on The Tree’s innovative cuisine tail is The Smiling Bison (Best Burger/Best Dining Experience). This establishment’s gastropub menu and craft cocktails have been drawing the attention of locals and area foodies alike for over three years now. Be sure to try their 24 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | S P R I N G 2 019

signature bison burger! Another creative winner in the foodie scene is The Tennessee Truffle. Best Chef Nat Russell delights with his gourmet southern cuisine and The Truffle is arguably the best Date Night place in town. If you go for breakfast, make sure to try the grits or the sausage gravy and biscuits. You can thank me later for that tip. Within easy walking distance is The District (Best Happy Hour). Try the happy hour fish tacos, they are fantastic, or the steak on the dinner menu — awesome. These restaurants are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to award-winning options. Sanford boasts many great outdoor dining experiences. Chief among them is The Breezeway (Best Outdoor Dining), a place

known not only for its ambience but also great food and wonderful sandwiches. Craving pizza? There are a number of great places downtown, but newly opened Mr. Z’s Sanford has been voted Sanford’s Best Pizza — and deservedly so. I suspect lots of folks voted for them due to their fabulous cheesesteaks, as well as for their late-night hours, 11 AM to midnight, 5 days a week (Wed-Sun). At the other end of the historic downtown area is Shantell’s Just Until… (Best Southern Cuisine). A local favorite for a number of years now, Shantell makes a todie-for southern fried chicken and the collards are tops, bar none. For those who like Mediterranean food, Zorba’s Greek Restaurant (Best Mediterranean Cuisine) has excellent Greek and Italian food. No wonder Sanfordites vote for them year after year. Have a hankering for some wings? West End Trading Co. (Best Wings), while primarily a bar, has the best wings around. Owner Paul Williams is very much deserving of his Sanford Promoter/Visionary award. Nary a month passes in Sanford without some event happening that Williams has envisioned, supported, and/or promoted.

24 CRAFT TAPS • SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

Thank you! WE APPRECIATE YOU VOTING FOR US!

For brunch, check out the Colonial Room diner (Best Place for Breakfast or Brunch). And let’s not forget about dessert. Wondermade (Best Place for Sweets) has you covered. Do you know that Wondermade holds the Guinness world record for the greatest number of people eating s’mores at one time? Not only a marshmallow place, they make their own ice cream, as evidenced by the lines in the summer evening. For coffee, head on over to The Palate (Best Place for Coffee, Tea, Juice, or Smoothies). As a bonus, know that all the profits at The Palate go toward fighting human trafficking, and they run on an all-volunteer staff. And finally, check out the ever-popular Corner Café, winner of Best Caterer award. Now to be honest, there are some very good restaurants that are not in the downtown area, as chosen by our readers. Colorado’s Prime Steak (Best Steaks) has the best steak around. ChickFil-A (Best Sandwich) is always packed, and usually has a long drive-thru line for a reason. Ichico Ichie Buffet (Best Asian Cuisine) boasts a popular Asian buffet. Our readers give a big thumb’s up to Bahama Breeze for their Best Latin/Caribbean cuisine. And Miller’s Ale House was voted Best Sports Bar. Sanford is fortunate to have a number of award-winning bars that also serve great food. Prime among them is Sanford Brewing Company (Best Brewery), and Buster’s Bistro (Best Overall Bar), both of which are very popular for their food as well as their drinks and entertainment. Buster’s also boasts Sanford’s Favorite Bartender, Percy JP Buster. The Alley (Best Live Entertainment) is known for its great live jazz, but is also attached to Fuel, a great place for real BBQ.

Enjoy our large open air taproom with a view into the brew house. Savor handcrafted beers, meads, ciders and specialty sodas. Taste the fresh, locally sourced ingredients, made to order. Relish the sounds of our performing musicians. Soak in the quintessential southern hospitality, make new friends, discover history. Sit outside, enjoy the beautiful Florida weather with your furry friends. Bring you kids for mac ‘n cheese while you sip our handcrafted beer.

Sanford is a craft beer paradise, and the Best Beer Selection can be found at Celery City Craft — with over 51 options on tap. Not a beer drinker? Head over to Luisa’s Cellar, (Best Place to have a Glass of Wine). Ask for the password and visit their speakeasy, too. If a cocktail is more up your alley, head over to The Imperial (Best Place for Cocktails). And finally, the award for Best New Restaurant or Bar goes to Tuffy’s Bottle Shop & Lounge. With their huge outdoor area, it’s quickly becoming a Sanford favorite. Not everyone can be a winner each and every year, but I challenge you to find a downtown eating (or drinking) establishment that has not won an award from the Best of Sanford Awards in the past three years. We are a downtown packed with award winners. With so many options, you cannot make a bad choice.

Leon Konieczny is a local Central Florida foodie and food blogger who’s been writing about Sanford and Seminole County area “good eats” restaurants for the past seven years. He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops where high quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks — in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.

With its psychedelic ‘70s vibes and rock ‘n roll music, it’s no surprise that this pizza place caters to vegans. The company was actually founded by hippies and they make sure herbivores can enjoy well-made craft pizzas. Order up a pizza from their many options, including the Veg Out piled up with veggies, topped with Follow Your Heart cheese, and your choice of tempeh and tofu. You can customize nearly any menu item — including appetizers and hoagies — with vegan-friendly, dairy-free cheese offered at no upcharge. And an added bonus is that employees use separate gloves and equipment when preparing your vegan selection so there’s no risk of cross contamination. Glutenfree options are also available. They also have a full bar with beer and cocktails to add to your bliss. By special request, you can order steamed curry cabbage wrapped in roti. Try pairing it with an ice-cold bottle of mango juice for an added treat. Negril Spice is a two-time winner of My Sanford Magazine’s Best of Sanford Best Caribbean food award in 2016 and 2017.

Other vegetarian options found around Sanford include: the Da Kine tofu poke at Tuffy’s, Bahama Breeze’s jackfruit tacos, vegetable rolls and tofu dishes at Maru Sushi and Grill, lard-free beans at Tijuana Flats (that can also be found at a few authentic Mexican restaurants), plus various salads and sandwiches at Willow Tree Cafe. Don’t forget your boost at Palate Coffee and The Healthy Buddah 3, where you can unwind with endless options of coffees and teas. And there’s more to come—soon the food hall Henry’s Depot will open at the historic Sanford Railroad Depot. There you will be able to find all-vegan southern BBQ Dixie Dharma and wood-fired pizzas by Grain & Ember. Nikki Namdar is a marketing professional and a contributor to local publications. IN-CIDER

INFORMATION

A

BY DRINK SANFORD

n ancient craft dating back to the days of the Roman Empire is experiencing a revival right here in Downtown Sanford. Cider making, a popular industry in America up until Prohibition, is making a comeback thanks to Tuffy's Bottle Shop & Lounge. Recently named Sanford’s Best New Bar or Restaurant at the 2018 Best of Sanford Awards, Tuffy’s serves beer, wine, cocktails, and makes their own hard cider. But this is not the hard cider you’ve seen in the store in recent decades.

they say ciders are too sweet,” said St. Pierre. “A lot of the alternative ciders are heavily back sweetened. This is why they taste like candy. We do not back sweeten any of our ciders.”

Owner Dan St. Pierre and head cider maker Donald Rhodus shared their process and thoughts on the age-old beverage.

We were curious and asked which of Tuffy’s ciders best represents Sanford. St. Pierre and Rhodus agreed that one of their seasonal releases using locally grown strawberry guavas from a friend’s tree is the perfect representation. Named “Allen’s Five & Dime,” the cider embodies the collaborative spirit of Sanford’s festivals, restaurants, and bars. “We live here, play here, and work here. We support local and work together to make things better every day,” said St. Pierre.

Unlike brewing beer with malt and hops, the cider making process is more akin to making wine, fermenting apples or other fruits. The fermentation, experimentation, and selection at Tuffy’s is constantly changing. “Our original plan was to make very small batches - sell until we run out, and then make a little more,” said St. Pierre. “It became clear early on that we would need to make more variety and more volume. That’s not to say we underestimated the market, but we never dreamed it would take off this quickly.”

Owner Dan St. Pierre and head cider maker Donald Rhodus

After Prohibition and in recent decades, cider has been marketed as an alternative to beer, and unfortunately what’s mostly available on store shelves is still hyper-saccharine. But St. Pierre believes cider does not have to be an alternative, but rather can be the first choice. “I meet a lot of people that say they are ‘not much of a cider guy/girl’ and almost every time it is because

“If it’s sweet it’s because we made it that way, and if it’s dry it’s intentional. And you can drink more than two without feeling like you ate a bucket of pop rocks,” says St. Pierre. Tuffy’s also uses whole fruit and juices (not from concentrate), and their ciders are never pasteurized.

In addition to more cider making, Tuffy’s plans on completing their bottle shop concept this year. It will be a retail focused market that offers a great selection of ciders, beers, wines, and spirits along with bar tools, cocktail classes and good advice on how to be a better bartender at home. CREATE THE PERFECT PATIO

by Amber Clore, ASID, CAPS

Summer is almost here and now is the time to make sure your patios are ready for the end of school parties and the backyard soirees. I'm here to help you make your patio space just as inviting as your interiors. Spicing up your backyard is a lot easier than you may think. With the right tools, strength, and some spare time, you’ll have the absolute best hangout spot all your friends will be jealous of! “Focused Flooring” You can’t forget about the rug! Rugs make a beautiful addition to any styled space, and the outdoors are no exception. In fact, outdoor rugs may be even more ideal because they are kid and pet proof. They are extremely durable because dirt and mud simply sit on the surface of the rug, making it much easier to clean up after your soiree. As the perfect inexpensive way to brighten up your space, outdoor rugs come in a wonderful range of colors and patterns that will help you design a party that will leave all of your guests impressed! “Let in Lighting” Lights must be added for a final touch of pizazz as well! You can choose any hanging lights and place them to drape above your seating area or whatever type of lights you would like really. Your patio is a very versatile space that should show off a bit of your personality. Fun lighting means you have designed the ultimate patio to help you enjoy those late summer meals! “Fab the Furniture” Next, you have to find the perfect furniture. Modular sectionals are great for outdoor spaces, especially a sectional with a durable fabric that can hold up against children as well as the elements. Depending on the size and shape of your backyard space, a modular sectional can give you a lot of options for different configurations to provide maximum seating. Look for a dining table that is going to be an investment for your backyard space. If you plan to entertain every season, you need to have a table that will last. There are many high-quality options that will not only resist the elements but also add to the color and style of your event. If the dining table is the time to invest, the chairs are another story entirely. Comparison shop away. There are plenty of inexpensive options that will go perfectly with an upscale design. I like outdoor dining chairs that are light, stackable, and have some color to them. “Bring in the Color” Just like a room, decorating a patio starts with a color palette. For events that have a kids side and an adult side, balance is the key to making everyone happy. Look for color combinations that have at least one neutral color, and one pop color in the mix. It will help with incorporating a fun and playful look while maintaining a sophisticated tone at your patio party. If you really want to make a bold statement, you can simply add some colorful paint to your existing furniture. Whether you have plastic chairs, or wooden tables, a little bit of pretty paint won’t hurt! For a final touch, toss in some patterned pillows to top off your seating area. You now have a vibrant, summery patio to show off this season! “Green it UP” Some of us would love to have some sort of greenery in our home and what better way of bringing in some freshness than to start a garden! For a small backyard, a vertical garden is still a good idea. The fence could be used for more than privacy; it can also be the base for the garden. You can spruce it up with pretty planters attached to it to have all of your pretty plants. Another creative alternative could be to create a partition, or backdrop. These can be enhanced with small plants or flowers, depending on what kind of garden you’re trying to achieve. Get inventive with the design of your plant pots to add a more aesthetic appeal to your outdoor space. I hope you’ve enjoyed these patio ideas and use them as starting points to make your own perfect oasis. Don’t let the heat stop you from making your backyard just as beautiful as the inside of your home. This summer, be creative and let your patio be the talk of the town!

SKIN CARE TIPS

THAT WORK ALL YEAR BY J U L I A VA N DE R M OL E N

MAKE TIME FOR YOUR MOISTURIZER

Always moisturize your skin after bathing. Previous dry brushing will allow better penetration of the moisturizer. Once again, a chemical-free, cruelty-free product is my suggestion.

TREAT YOURSELF TO A FACIAL

Facials offer a relaxing way to rejuvenate the skin. Facials should include a customized gentle cleansing, exfoliation, steaming, and extractions. Regular facials are critical for optimal skin health and preferably are performed once a month but no less than once a quarter.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR DIET

Your skin is a mirror image of what’s going on inside of your body. Don’t eat cheap, fast, or fake and your skin will thank you.

BE AWARE OF HYDRATION

Drink lot of water! Keeping your skin and body hydrated is essential to its overall health and appearance.

SLATHER ON SPF EVERY SINGLE DAY

Aestheticians are the “guiding lights of skin care,” constantly emphasizing the importance of sunblock, detailing proper daily skin-care rituals, and carefully contemplating the precise fleekness of your eyebrows. Today I share with you some of my favorite skincare tips that can work all year. From dull winter skin to achieving that springtime/summer glow, these steps are easy and proven effective. 30 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | S P R I N G 2 019

EMBRACE DRY BRUSHING Dry brushing is a crucial daily ritual that prevents crepey skin and can result in a change to the skin’s overall texture and clarity in just a few weeks. Most stores carry dry brushes. I prefer the plant-based or synthetic variety versus one made with animal hair. This step should be performed daily, staring at the extremities and working in a pattern up towards the heart.

CONSIDER YOUR CLEANSER

Chose a cleanser that has a pH close to your skin. A pH of 5.5 is a good number as it doesn’t interfere with your skin’s microflora like alkaline soaps can. My personal preference is something that is chemical-free and cruelty-free. A plethora of fantastic brands are readily available for over-the-counter purchase.

EMBRACE THAT DEWY LOOK

The definition of normal skin is soft, slightly moist and free of disease. So a little bit of oil on the skin is normal, our skin is not meant to look matte naturally. Avoid using harsh products that can over-dry or over-sensitize your skin. It can cause bigger issues later, such as broken capillaries and diffused redness.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR LIPS

Exfoliate your lips one to two times a week with your toothbrush and coconut oil, followed by an application of lip balm at night before bed. This helps to keep your lips soft and youthful looking.

W

hen I was little girl, my mom used to tease me with the phrase, “your epidermis is showing.” I was too young to understand that the word epidermis meant skin. I only knew that it that it bugged me when she said it. But once I became an aesthetician, I realized how impactful those words can be.

We live in sunny Florida, where sun exposure is inevitable. But don’t hibernate - natural vitamin D can be beneficial! Make a daily application of a 30 SPF sunblock a must. The first ingredient should be zinc oxide. If you can’t pronounce the active ingredients, then put it back on the shelf.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR EYEBROWS

Here’s an Easy DIY Recipe for a Natural Exfoliating Mask

Keep your eyebrows well-maintained and shaped. Avoid hard-looking sharpie brows, and instead keep your brows full with a clean shape. Seek a professional if you’re not sure how to do it yourself.

Ingredients:

We are all born with one skin, one face, and we have to wear it every single day for the rest of our lives. Prevention and regular maintenance are key to keeping your skin youthful, healthy, and glowing.

Steps:

• Small Tupperware bowl with lid • 1 TBSP of ethically-sourced, raw, local honey • 1 TBSP of baking soda

1. Mix the honey and baking soda in the Tupperware container 2. Make sure that your face is clean prior to application. Scoop out a dime sized amount and apply to your face in a gentle circular motion. 3. Leave on for 5-10 minutes then rinse clean. 4. Save the rest in your refrigerator and scoop out what you need each use.

Julia Vander Molen has been an aesthetician for over 20 years. She performs professional skin care and brow services in Downtown Historic Sanford, FL.

Additional options: • For acneic skin, add a drop of clove oil (no more) • To lighten or brighten skin, add 2 drops of lemon juice

DISCONNECTING

FROM TECHNOLOGY BY MARNIE FORESTIERI

tion with technology should be limited and parents should plan activities and experiences that can be done together or independently.

Recent research has shown that a child’s brain can become wired differently when exposed to technology at early ages. Parents are becoming increasingly aware of the need to help children disconnect from technology.

Involving your child in the decision process of selecting activities is a great opportunity to learn about his or her strengths and interests. Selecting summer activities could be the start of a family adventure. For example, consider visiting the locations of different summer camps with your child and allow your child to get involved in the process of choosing the activity or the provider. Help your child write some questions he would like to know prior to the visit. During the visit, allow your child to ask questions to the provider and then reflect together on the different options.

Educators and psychologists recommend that instead of playing with screens, kids' interac-

ith summer just around the corner, it’s time for parents to start planning activities to keep kids occupied once school is out. While summer can be a reprieve from the hectic over-scheduled days of the school year, the slower pace can also result in boredom. During this time, children can become more dependent on TV, game consoles, or other electronic devices for entertainment.

Hall of Famer Tim Raines kicks off Youth Baseball opening day

IT WAS A DAY TO REMEMBER

Baseball Hall of Famer Tim Raines Comes Home BY MIKE SMITH

It ’s today that I am writing this . . . and today is Sunday, March 10th, and yesterday was “Tim Raines Day”.

I had talked to classmates of Tim Raines and heard about many of his high school exploits. I remember talking to his family members, all of whom showed that same small-town humbleness that Tim still displays. I had talked to local leaders who praised Tim’s generosity through his charitable efforts over the last several decades. I talked to baseball fans, who were quick to share their favorite Tim Raines 38 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | S P R I N G 2 019

memory, even if it was his Jheri-Curl he sported in the mid-80’s. Then I recalled one specific conversation that had me stirring a little quicker than I was preferring to be stirred this morning. The person in this particular recollection was Perla, and she is the owner and editor of this publication. “You have until tomorrow night to submit your story for print” echoed in my mind. That tomorrow night she referred to is right now . . .

WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?

I thought about doing a piece about all of the work it took to put on such a day. But thought that people wouldn’t really want to hear about the 1.5 years of back-and-forths between myself and anyone I could find that had a direct connection to Tim Raines. First, I put my amateur

reporter skills to use and dug up some of his old high school buddies and had them put in a word for me to Tim. Then, I found friends of mine who went to school with his sons, and tasked them to put in a word with them so they could put in a word with Tim for me. I even tried to put in my own word with Tim. But nobody wants to hear about that. I also don’t think the readers would want to hear about how I began nagging our Mayor and a couple of City Commissioners around the same time in the late summer of ’17. Tim Raines had been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame that July, and I had gone up to cover it (see My Sanford Winter 2017). With myself being an impatient type, I wanted to put together an event as soon as possible and hit the ground running when I returned from

awoke this morning with a dozen flashbacks of great moments that had happened just the day before. So many memories of laughs, smiles, handshakes, hugs, old friendships rekindled, and new friendships forged, filled my consciousness as I awoke. I took my time getting out of bed this morning, as I was recalling some of the many great conversations I had had the previous evening.

Cooperstown, NY. Turns out, days like yesterday take some time to put together. But nobody cares to hear about all of that. With the clock ticking on this article, and in the interest of attention spans, here is what made yesterday a memorable day.

YOUTH BASEBALL OPENING DAY WITH TIM RAINES AT HISTORIC SANFORD MEMORIAL STADIUM

Youth Baseball Opening Day is basically when the Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken Little League teams get to put on their new uniforms for the first time, and then parade around the field in front of friends and family. It’s a very enjoyable spectacle as kids of all ages exhibit their pride and excitement of donning their team colors for the first time. Once Tim was able to give us a date of March 9th, The City of Sanford-Parks & Recreation Department were kind enough to schedule this event to coincide with a day for him. Weather-wise, it was a beautiful day, a little on the warm side, but still a pretty stellar day. The grounds crew at the old ballpark had the field in absolutely perfect shape for the proceedings. On the field were painted logos added by the crew, one of the Babe Ruth Little League, and the other, a large baseball with “TR” and “30” included along with the red stitching. A 9 am reception took place first in the Buddy Lake Room for Tim, his family and friends. It was a wonderful sight to see as Tim was greeted by friends from his recent, and not-sorecent past. It was actually hard to differentiate between the two as each old friend was greeted and treated by Tim as if the time away, and baseball superstardom, had not changed him over the last 40 years.

At 10 am, it was time for the Little League parade. The group of sponsors, dignitaries, Tim, and some of his family and friends were seated out on the infield between third base and the pitchers mound. Thirty teams, led by their coaches, entered the field down by the first base dugout. As they were announced, each team made their way around the backstop behind home plate before turning toward the outfield as they passed third base. Once the teams were in a wall formation, creating a backdrop of spotless and colorful uniforms, the ceremony shifted its focus to our

Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett proclaims Sunday, March 9th, 2019 as “Tim Raines Day”

guest of honor. There were a handful of speakers, from local officials to persons from Tim’s past on hand, most notable being Mayor Jeff Triplett. Mr. Mayor made the proclamation that March 9th, 2019, would now be known as “Tim Raines Day”. It was also proclaimed that the entire property encapsulating the ballpark, the ballfields, and future potential adjacent parks would now be under the new moniker of “Tim Raines Sports Park”. Tim was presented with a key to city and then took to the microphone himself. He addressed the crowd in the grandstands as he spoke about his life in Sanford. Near finishing up his speech, he turned his attention to the 350+ kids behind him. He spoke of his days playing on the very field they were all now standing on and the importance of dedication, hard work, and following dreams. He then threw out a ceremonial first pitch, signifying the start of the new little league season. That was to conclude the festivities on the field, but Tim then wandered out toward the kids in the grass and wound up spending another hour mingling and chatting with people on the field.

A NIGHT AT THE SANFORD MUSEUM WITH TIM RAINES

Later that evening, we had organized an intimate gathering for Tim and his family to see the display dedicated to him and his career. Tim’s wife and two daughters had yet to visit our great local Museum and he had previously expressed an interest in bringing them there. The dedicated and passionate museum staff

had also put together a new collection of Raines artifacts in the lobby for the reception. With his parents, his son, and his grandson in attendance, there were four generations of Raines in the room, in what turned out to be a truly great family gathering. There was an unveiling of a framed photo taken of Tim earlier in the day, to be included in his display to represent the dedication of “Tim Raines Sports Park”. After a long day, and with the Museum event wrapping up, I then selfishly pursued a personal goal of having a beer with Tim Raines. I am proud to say that I was able to pull off my pie-in-the-sky scenario, and it was everything I had hoped it would be. Ask me about that when you see me, as that is another story all in itself . . . and my 24-hour window to finish this is closing quick. But, yesterday certainly was a great day.

Mike Smith runs a couple of businesses in downtown Sanford, is the proud owner of a Sanford Historic Home, is on the Sanford Museum Board, and is better known around town as “Maggies Dad”. He also claims to have the largest baseball memorabilia collection the city…and dares you to challenge him otherwise.

PERSEVERANCE

Perseverance. A powerful element in fighting cancer. Edith Picallo has persevered through tough challenges in her 70 years – immigrating from Cuba, losing her husband to cancer, raising three kids alone and beating cancer twice. A new stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis had her wondering if she had what it took to beat it again. Her initial prognosis was severe – less than a year to live. But when she found Florida Cancer Specialists, her doctor conducted genomic testing to personalize her therapy. The result – her tumor shrank 47 percent in just six months. Now, three years after her diagnosis, Edith’s story shows that when hope and science join forces, great outcomes can happen. “Florida Cancer Specialists did a genetic test to determine the right medicine for me and my lung cancer, and it is working.”
