AS MAYOR, IT IS MY GREATEST PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU to the friendly city of Sanford. Sanford is a great historic city with a rich heritage that continues to offer growth and opportunity for our residents, business owners and visitors. Sanford is the largest city in Seminole County with 56,900 residents, an increase of 3,330 since the 2010 Census, a two and half percent increase since last year with no signs of slowing down. Sanford is one of the oldest incorporated cities in Central Florida, home to a wealth of history and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Brick-lined streets, elegant storefronts and large Victorian era homes throughout the downtown area immediately remind visitors of the city’s 19th Century origins and its unique sense of place.

IT’S THURSDAY MORNING AND BUSINESS AS USUAL
in downtown Sanford. Cars line the streets, shop owners are firing up their neon “open” signs, and restaurants are busy prepping for today’s lunchtime crowd. From the looks of things, you would never know in a matter of hours, the energy will change from daytime buzz to nighttime sizzle when Alive After 5 takes over Sanford’s beautiful, brick-lined historic downtown. Held on the second Thursday of each month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Alive After 5 recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and proudly holds the distinction of being Central Florida’s longest-running recurring street party. On these special nights, the streets close as the afternoon sun goes down, and the Alive After 5 crew sweeps in, setting the stage for a party for a few thousand of their closest friends. The streets quickly fill with the sounds of live music, the aroma of great local food, the flavors of Sanford’s growing craft beer district, the liveliness of children enjoying Starlite Entertainment’s complimentary KidsZone, and the small-town hospitality of dozens of galleries, gift shops, antique stores, vendors and artisans all set among the charm of this city nearly 150 years young. It’s evident, a great night is on tap in Downtown Sanford! Throughout the year, Alive After 5 maintains their designation as the area’s go-to event by changing the theme each month and adding a few special events, s , things like: January’s “Chili Cook-off,” February’s “Pardi Gras,” June’s “Blues, Brews and BBQ,” October’s “Oktoberfest,” and many more. There is always a reason to celebrate and Alive After 5 is proud to make it happen.

"Sanford is a gem of a historical city, a city that deserves recognition" MY FIRST VISIT TO SANFORD WAS IN 2011, when I attended the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation annual statewide conference in Orlando. As an architect with a specialization in historic preservation and restoration, I visited many historic cities across the state of Florida. I didn’t realize Sanford was soon to become one of my favorite places. Our tour bus approached Sanford from the west. As we drove along the lakefront, I enjoyed the wonderful sense of arrival that unfolded the closer we drew to the downtown area. We passed the gateway feature, which defines the entry into the town’s historic core. Our group was led on a guided tour of downtown and visited several arts and culture venues. We were impressed by the quality of the tour, which included a vignette of the “Celery Soup” play. Our tour did not last nearly long enough and I was left feeling there was so much more to explore. Last year I was invited to be a speaker for the City of Sanford’s Historic Preservation Lecture Series. In preparation of my lecture, I spent time in the downtown and residential areas. Sanford has a beautiful waterfront, thriving downtown, wonderful grid street system, plentiful parks, and is ripe for tourism. I was struck by the tremendous potential for redevelopment and the golden opportunity to connect the historic downtown with the natural asset of Lake Monroe. After my lecture, I visited Imperial; a furniture and home décor store by day and wine bar by night. I really appreciate places that are multi-functional and felt at home with the eclectic and community friendly vibe the city had.
7
My third visit to Sanford was with the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in August 2015. The board chose Sanford for the retreat because of the many statewide preservation awards the city received the past years. I’m a bit of an architectural detective and once I turned onto Sanford Avenue, I got excited about the change in scenery. I passed single family bungalows and a charming Mediterranean revival neighborhood before approaching the city’s new streetscape. During my weekend long visit I took tons of photos of attractive downtown buildings, walked along Sanford Avenue and read the heritage markers, enjoyed good food, arts, music, and soaked in the sense of community. It was on the drive home from Sanford that I was inspired to create the “Florida Historical Places” Facebook page. Sanford is a gem of a historical city, a city that deserves recognition.
Rick Gonzalez, AIA, President of REG Architects, Inc., opened his architecture practice in Downtown West Palm Beach with his father Ricardo in 1988. He is the immediate past President of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, and serves as the Vice Chair of the Florida Historical Commission.

IT'S AMAZING HOW MANY PEOPLE I ENCOUNTER in the Central Florida region who have either never been to Sanford, or haven't been in decades. The conversation often begins with the person offering what they "know" about Sanford. I am always so interested to hear their feedback and enjoy asking the question: "have you seen us lately?" I usually learn that what they "know" is misguided, outdated, and not based on personal experience. It's such a treat to share with people what I know about Sanford, and encourage them to come visit. If you haven't seen us lately, here are some things to look forward to on your future visit:
HIP AND HISTORIC Sanford's downtown continues to attract a large number of creative types who are drawn to the city’s historic character, charm, and sense of place. Just take a walk into the local coffee shop and see creativity at work, as designers sip lattes and conduct business via their remote “offices.” Millennials and young families seem to be especially fond of Sanford in recent years and the demographic is shifting to include more young couples and families with small children.
ethic of many property owners who “get it.” They understand that a building constructed of strong, old growth lumber harvested from hundred year old + trees is far superior to new wood, harvested from monoculture trees that have grown for only 10-15 years.
COTTAGE INDUSTRY Perhaps the most exciting part of Sanford’s renewal in recent times has been the development of a strong cottage industry that has encompassed many retail sectors including: food and beverage, handmade crafts, music, and organic merchandise. Looking for an interesting shopping experience? Look no further. Our downtown features some crafty businesses – a vintage record store, apothecary, homebrew shop, and marshmallow treats all within walking distance of each other - all homegrown, all local, and all Sanford proud.
AUTHENTIC FLORIDA Sanford is different from the scores of cookie cutter communities throughout the region. A great deal of our buildings (especially in the historic areas) were built of natural materials employing quality craftsmanship – far different from the plastic architecture of suburbia. Property owners work hard and invest considerable time and money into protecting the historic fabric of their buildings, restoring features rather than replacing them. This is due in part to the city’s strong historic preservation regulations, but is also due to the preservation Christine Dalton works as the Historic Preservation Officer and Community Planner for the City of Sanford. Christine is passionate about historic places. She teaches Historic Preservation at her Alma Mater, Rollins College. Her interests include all things historic, sailing, teaching, mentoring, and the arts. MY SAN FOR D MAGA ZI N E | COM M U N IT Y & P EOP LE • 8

WITH OVER 45 YEARS IN THE FOOD & BEVERAGE INDUSTRY,
Chef Michael O’Brien Sr. is proud to be a 7th Generation Floridian. As the oldest son of a hard working single mother, Michael began his career at the tender age of 8, scrubbing pots in a family style Diner in Deland, Florida. Working his way up through the ranks from busboy to short order cook to head waiter to chef, and finally, restaurant owner & caterer, it has been his lifelong goal to self-educate himself in every facet of the hospitality field.
With his partner, Ms. Jody Hill, Chef Michael opened The Corner Café – Home of Gourmet To Go in Historic Downtown Sanford on January 5th, 2009 at the very height of the Great Recession. Having done well in the lead-up to the financial crisis and with a deep and abiding love for this charming and wonderful community, they felt a tremendous desire to “give back” when things were at their worst. Now, 7 years later, The Corner Café is a hub of activity for the entire community… and beyond! Hundreds of customers

REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY LISA HOLDER
Sanford’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) was established in 1995 to address declining economic conditions within the downtown and waterfront and comprises approximately 378 acres within downtown Sanford along the waterfront areas of the City.
SANFORD’S CRA HAS IMPLEMENTED NUMEROUS PUBLIC infrastructure, streetscapes and building renovations within the downtown area over the past twenty years. These projects include: Magnolia Square, the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, Magnolia Square Market, and the Historic First Street and Sanford Avenue Streetscapes. The CRA has also provided building façade grants and building improvement loan subsidies to qualifying property owners and business owners who have invested in their downtown facilities. The number of businesses within the CRA has increased from 26 in 1995 to 230 in 2015. The Seminole County Board of County Commissioners approved the city’s request to extend the operational timeframe of the Lake Monroe Waterfront Downtown Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) through 2025 and continue the successful redevelopment partnership between the City of Sanford and Seminole County. The 10 year extension of the operational timeframe of Sanford’s CRA will enable the City and the County to continue the capital improvements; infrastructure improvements and amenities improvements that are needed to enable and encourage
continued private sector investment and job creation within downtown Sanford. The continued economic development within the CRA will increase the City and County tax base, and provide increased job opportunities for Sanford residents while improving the City’s infrastructure. The Sanford CRA Board is a five member panel of volunteer citizens appointed by the City of Sanford City Commission. Two of the five seats are reserved for Seminole County designees who are also approved by the City of Sanford City Commission.

PRE SIDE NT/CE O OF THE GRE ATER SANF ORD REGIONAL CHA MBER OF COMMERCE PERL A B. CROSBY
Q. PLEASE GIVE OUR READERS SOME INSIGHT INTO YOUR BACKGROUND/HISTORY. A. I, like many others, am a transplant to the sunshine state. I grew up in the Snow Belt on the south shore of Lake Ontario in upstate New York. I lived in Phoenix, Arizona for five years and have now lived in Seminole County for five years. (I still miss seeing the ground covered in snow at Christmas time.) From a career standpoint, I often tell people that I am a mutt. My career has included restaurant and hotel management, brewing industry operations, corporate marketing, public relations and government affairs, commercial banking, operations, marketing, public relations and government affairs for seven operating divisions, independent business and financial consulting, business coaching and Chamber of Commerce leadership. In addition, I have more than 30 years of volunteer leadership in community not-for-profit organizations where I have raised more than 45 million dollars for various charitable and community causes and led numerous community Boards and events with attendance up to 350,000 attendees. Q. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING IN SANFORD? A. First of all, I am a Sanford resident. After looking around the area upon moving here, we selected Sanford as a place to call home. We love the community, its people and the tremendous opportunities we have here. Sanford is a community that has incredible opportunities. I see the community on the cusp of growth that will be defining for 15
our future. I like that there is a desire for continuous improvement in Sanford. We live in a place that has tremendous assets that are not typical for a community this size. Sanford has Orlando Sanford International Airport--the number one growing small airport in the country, a nationally accredited zoo, an impressive waterfront that provides great recreational opportunities, access to major highways, growing businesses that are doing some amazing things, a great education system, a hospital with a regional trauma center, beautifully restored and sustained historic neighborhoods and so much more. In addition, the people I have an opportunity to work with on a daily basis cover many walks of life and professions. Q. HAS YOUR PAST LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE IMPACTED YOUR ROLE AS THE PRESIDENT/CEO OF THE GREATER SANFORD REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? A. Absolutely! In 2000 I graduated from the US Chamber’s Institute for Organizations Management—a six year Chamber executive leadership school—and Sanford is my third Chamber executive position. In addition, I have a broad and eclectic career marketing, government relations, community leadership and more. My involvement has given me a broad range of experience that I use every day, given the wide ranging issues and initiatives the Chamber touches. Extensive experience along the way has given me a wide and deep level of experiences across several business sectors. I rely on that experience every day.
Q. DOWNTOWN SANFORD SEEMS TO BE GROWING, WHAT ROLE HAS THE CHAMBER PLAYED IN THIS REVITALIZATION AND WHERE DO YOU SEE SANFORD WITHIN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? A. Downtown Sanford is definitely undergoing positive change. However, the Chamber can only take credit for supporting others who are making it happen. As I see it, leadership within the city of Sanford is primarily responsible for the growth and development. Mayor Jeff Triplett and the commission, City Manager Norton Bonaparte, Assistant City Manager Tom George, City Economic Development Director Bob Turk, the Welcome Center, Kim House and the St John’s Art Festival Team and individual merchants and property owners are working hard to make it happen. The Chamber is working to bring downtown merchants and business owners together in a common cause around key issues. Those efforts were in line with our goals to serve in the roles of leadership, facilitation, partners and other roles that are appropriate in improving business and our overall community. Moving forward over the next five years shows that there are many positive initiatives that will bode well for the future of Sanford and our downtown community. Included are the downtown catalyst project, discussion about the future of the Civic Center, new development within Fort Mellon Park, extension of the Riverwalk, redevelopment of Marina Island, new streetscapes across the downtown core and much more. The Sanford of 2021 will look significantly different than we know in 2016. The Chamber looks forward to being part of those significant changes. Q. WHAT BENEFITS ACCRUE TO A BUSINESS MEMBER AS A RESULT OF THEIR MEMBERSHIP IN THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? A. First and foremost, the Chamber is an association of businesses who are working to improve both business and the overall community. Business depends on community and our community depends on business—the two are key to the success of each other—business doesn’t succeed without the strength of a quality community and community doesn’t succeed without strong businesses. By coming together to support that primary objective through the Chamber of Commerce, we are then able to provide additional opportunities for member businesses. Our programs encircle member businesses in a network of successful business people and programs. We strengthen the community by providing a representative voice for the business community on issues that affect both business and the greater community. We offer networking, sales, marketing, advertising and much more
for our members. Members find that investing in the Chamber is a productive and enjoyable way to promote quality growth that adds new businesses and customers for their business. Chamber membership sends customers the message that they are a reputable company that actively participates in the local community. The Chamber brings clout and invites businesses to join their growing list of local leaders who are supporting their efforts. The Chamber offers 24-7 VISIBILITY with benefits—for less than a one-time cost of advertising. The Chamber works for our members 24-7 while providing numerous cost-effective opportunities for you to maximize your company’s exposure to current and potential customers through events, referrals, meetings, initiatives, marketing, targeted advertising, sponsorships and much more. With over eighty fun-filled events a year (including the largest weekly networking event in Central Florida) and affordable marketing opportunities, the Chamber is a great place for local and regional business leaders to gather and achieve important initiatives while promoting and helping people, their companies and their brands. The Sanford Chamber is home to the largest weekly networking event in Central Florida, along with FUN filled business mixers that bring people together, a website with 14,000+ hits per month, event listings, a business card rack and so much more to bring visibility to member businesses. Q. WHAT DOES THE CHAMBER WANT VISITORS TO LEARN REGARDING THE BENEFITS OF LIVING, WORKING, AND PLAYING IN SANFORD? A. Sanford is a community that has an excellent balance of each. A quality stock of affordable homes, excellent schools, community safety, excellent health care, access to major transportation corridors and modes, an international airport, excellent parks, great arts all contribute to Sanford being an excellent city for people to reside in. We have exceptional businesses that are growing and thriving across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, aviation, technologies, finance, retail, services and many more. In addition, new businesses and growth in existing businesses will fuel the need for quality employees to meet their demands. Lastly, Sanford is home to excellent play. There is so much to see and do in this beautiful city. There are wonderful theaters and music shows at the Wayne Densch Theater. Residents also can enjoy boating from local marinas, sailing clubs and lessons, neat parks such as the Sanford Riverwalk, cigar bars and craft breweries, and excellent shopping in downtown Sanford or Town Center Mall.

As an added perk to their passengers, made possibly by the Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), passengers are offered free shuttle service from the Amtrak station into historic downtown Sanford (luggage and all) while waiting for their cars to load onto the train. When passengers get to Sanford’s Welcome Center (230 E. 1st St.) they can store their luggage, grab a bite to eat at one of the city’s popular restaurants, shop a little, visit the waterfront and take a return trip back to the station as they settle in for the trip to Lorton, VA. The Sanford Shuttle also provides free round trip transportation from the Sanford SunRail station between the hours of 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday-Friday into downtown Sanford, coinciding with the Sanford SunRail station

schedule. This is an awesome opportunity for SunRail passengers to experience Sanford too. Visiting Sanford by boat is another exciting option. Sanford is a waterfront city. The majestic St. Johns River borders the northern portion of the city where you can dock your vessel at the city’s free marina, mosey into historic downtown, socialize, shop, and enjoy the hipness of Sanford. Casual and breezy, non-pretentious sophistication lingers in the city of Sanford. The ambience of the historic downtown corridor with its 1920’s architecture, colorful people and intriguing arts, and cultural scene offer an alternative to the hustle and bustle. You’ll love Sanford, a true “city” with its own International Airport minutes from anywhere in Central Florida. Take a drive on the designated River of Lakes Scenic Highway into Sanford. The beauty of this city will overcome you. Conversations will start, friendships will begin, and of course, delicious food and tasty drinks await you. There are so many reasons why Sanford should be your next destination! Make plans right now to visit Sanford, mid-week or on the weekends, Sanford is “open for business.”

HOLLERBACH
PROPIETARIO DEL HOLLERBACH'S WILLOW TREE CAFE
HOLLERBACH OWNER OF HOLLE RBACH'S WILLOW TRE E C AF E PERL A B. CROSBY
Q. HOLLERBACH'S WILLOW TREE RESTAURANT CELEBRATES ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. DO YOU THINK YOUR BUSINESS HAS HAD AN IMPACT UPON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DOWNTOWN SANFORD?
A. The reason our family chose Sanford over other Central Florida locations is because we felt our presence would make a positive difference. Our research showed us the German community of Central Florida and Sanford were both undeserved. We felt if we provided an experience good enough for our guests to make the trip, we would succeed. Looking back we are extremely pleased to be a major contributor to the continued success and growth of the historic downtown Sanford Arts and Entertainment district. Q. DO YOU BELIEVE SANFORD HAS OR WILL BECOME A DESTINATION?
A. I believe Sanford is a destination for residents of our state especially on the weekends. A lot of our guests tell us they are charmed with the ambiance and historic look of our downtown, because it is authentic and not developer built. Q. WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO OPEN A RESTAURANT AND WHY SANFORD?
A. Linda and I have lived in the Orlando area since the 1970’s and she worked for a while in downtown Sanford prior to us opening the restaurant. We chose Sanford because there was foot traffic from the courthouse and government offices downtown. We got a phenomenal deal on the Willow Tree Cafe from the previous owners. Of course, good timing helped too! Q. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY AS A CHILD?
A. Summers in my hometown of Kyllburg, working with my family in our butcher shop and reuniting with friends. Q. HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME ASSUMING THAT YOU HAVE THAT LUXURY?
Q. CÓMO PASA USTED SU TIEMPO LIBRE, MY SAN FOR D MAGA ZI N E | COM M U N IT Y & P EOP LE • 24
A. Well the first 10 years Linda and I did not have very much free time. However, in the last couple of years our managers and our daughter have taken over a lot of the daily responsibilities. Now Linda can pursue her passion of creating art and I am an avid bicyclist. We like taking road trips to learn how other restaurants and markets take care of their guests and see if we can apply their successful tactics in our businesses. Q. WHAT SPECIFIC DISH DO YOU ENJOY COOKING FOR PLEASURE?
A. I am a big fan of using my Schwenker grill (a bbq with a swinging grill area) to make Spiessbraten (thin pork steaks marinated with herbs and spices). Q. AS A CHILD, YOU WANTED TO BE . . .
A. I wanted to be a city manager and build the town of my dreams. Q. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SANFORD AS A PLACE TO LIVE?
A. It's convenient and we live 10 blocks from where we work. We enjoy our neighbors and we found the house we always wanted. We can ride our bikes to work. I normally only drive my car two days a week. The city is close to water, trails, shopping and is surrounded by people who care about their neighbors. Q. WHAT IS FAMILY FOR YOU?
A. Like most people, our extended family is diverse and of different opinions and ideologies. I focus on staying connected, being supportive and building bridges to connect each other. I feel it is most important that actions and intentions make families and communities better. Q. I KNOW THAT YOU WERE BORN IN KYLLBURG, GERMANY AND THEN MIGRATED TO THIS COUNTRY. DO YOU EVER HAVE A LONGING FOR THE MOTHERLAND?
A. We Germans actually say fatherland. Having spent over 40 years in Florida, I think of Kyllburg as the place of my childhood and Sanford as my home. Q. IS YOUR RESTAURANT/MARKET REFLECTIVE OF YOUR GERMAN HERITAGE?
A. Yes, very much so. My grandmother and Aunt influenced me early on about the importance of creating gemuetlichkeit (a sense of well-being one feels when enjoying good food and drink among friends and family) while working in our butcher shop. Also, when Linda and I worked together at the Bavarian Schnitzel Haus on Church Street, we experienced how much joy it was to provide guests a good German meal.
Q. ARE YOUR RECIPES BASED UPON THOSE OF YOUR FAMILY AND/OR ANCESTORS?
A. Most of our recipes are based on traditional German comfort foods from the 1980's. My mother and aunt shared a lot of their recipes with us and then we worked with our outstanding chefs Josh and Patrick to make them suitable for use in our restaurant. Q. THE FACT THAT THE WILLOW TREE HAS BEEN HONORED AS THE TOP GERMAN RESTAURANT IN THE AREA FOR 10 YEARS IN A ROW MUST BE A SOURCE OF PRIDE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. MAY I ASSUME THAT YOU VIEW THIS AS A WIN-WIN FOR THE CITY OF SANFORD AS WELL?
A. I always tell my staff it is like a three legged stool: we need the staff, the vendors and the guests to make it all work. My favorite compliment is when I hear "good as usual.” Our goal when we started was to exceed expectations, return a profit and create a benefit for everyone involved, three simple rules which have governed my life. As long as I can say yes to all three rules, we will continue. 25

MOOD & FOOD DR . MIGUEL A . GONZ ÁLE Z , L MF T, MHS, MS*
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU FOUND YOURSELF REACHING FOR A COOKIE, cake, ice cream, or any other sweet or salty snack, even though you are not really hungry? And if you are not really hungry, why are you eating? What is it that drives your cravings for food when your body does not need it? Emotional eating is using food to suppress or soothe negative emotions, such as stress, anger, fear, boredom, sadness and loneliness. Often, the strongest cravings for food occur when you are experiencing some type of emotional turmoil in your life. Such situations make you vulnerable to eating to sooth your emotions. Emotional eating often leads to eating too much, especially too much of high-calorie, sweet, fatty foods. Food also serves as a distraction. If you are worried about a problem you have, you may focus on eating comfort food instead of dealing with the situation. Although some people actually eat less when feeling anxious or depressed, emotional distress may lead to impulsive eating. If you are an emotional eater, here are some things you can do to control emotional eating.
1. CONTROL YOUR STRESS
Try a stress management technique, such as yoga, meditation, relaxation, or some physical activity.
YOUR HUNGER—IS IT 2. UNDERSTAND EMOTIONAL OR PHYSICAL?
If you want to eat but you are not really hungry, give the craving a little time to pass; engage in reading or other activities to stop thinking about food.
3. KEEP A FOOD DIARY
Write down what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, how you're feeling when you eat and how hungry you are. Over time, you may see patterns emerge, revealing the connection between your mood and food.
4. RECOGNIZE & FIGHT BOREDOM
If you feel bored, instead of eating, take a walk, watch a movie, read, listen to music, surf the Internet or talk to a friend.
5. DON’T BUY IT
your
Try not to keep comfort foods in your home as they are a source of temptation.
Emotional eating is using food to suppress or soothe negative emotions
6. MAKE CHOICES
If you feel the need to snack between meals, choose a low-fat, low-calorie snack, such as fresh fruit, vegetables with fat-free dip, or unbuttered popcorn.
7. REST—REFRESH YOUR BODY
If you don’t get enough sleep, you may feel constantly tired, which could trigger eating just to boost your energy level. Taking naps and going to bed earlier can help you feel more energetic & alert.
8. AVOID ISOLATION
You're more likely to give in to emotional eating if you are lonely or feel isolated. Visit with family; join a group/club that you have something in common with. It could help you control emotional eating.
9. TRY THERAPY
If you believe that you are not able to control your emotional eating, consider psychotherapy with a professional mental health provider. It can help identify the triggers behind emotional eating or the presence of an eating disorder.

“IN 1891, GOLDSBORO BECAME THE SECOND ALL BL ACK INCORPORATED TOWNSHIP WITHIN FLORIDA ."
A COMMUNITY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CITIZENS who lived in Orange County, Florida dreamed of having their own incorporated Township. Mr. William Clark, a store owner, carpenter, and community leader helped make those dreams come to fruition. Mr. William Clark was the brother of Joe Clark, one of the founders and incorporators of Eatonville, the first incorporated all black township in the State of Florida. In 1891, Goldsboro became the second all black incorporated township within Florida. Within the Goldsboro Township, there lived a community of educated, hardworking, and Christian value led people. In 1911 Goldsboro lost its charter, when Forrest Lake, a powerful Sanford banker and state lawmaker, devised a plan to dissolve the charters of both Sanford and Goldsboro, to create a new charter that would make Goldsboro a community within Sanford, a part of Mosquito County. After the demise of Goldsboro, the town began a downward spiral with abandoned buildings, rising unemployment, and the loss of ambition.
Crooms Academy Museum, Velma Williams Resource Center and The Goldsboro Heritage & Art Garden. Also a host of thriving businesses and a new police station. The dream that Mr. Clark envisioned for Goldsboro is still alive and the community is on its way back to gaining the dignity, distinction, character, culture and respectability that it rightfully deserves.
