This issue is all about the best of Sanford, but in all honesty, Sanford is really the best of Florida. Not too big, not too small, our city is historic and established but with room for growth. Natural wonders are within reach (springs, the beach) but we’re also just a short drive to the theme parks. Sanford is Florida’s best kept secret for now. Word about our special community is getting out, and for good reason. There has hardly been a time in our history as exciting as the present to watch our city flourish.

We even have our very own film festival - Love Your Shorts, which was born here and takes place each February on Valentine’s Day weekend. Is there any time where there is NOT an event going on in Sanford? On any given day, you might see folks strolling with their dogs and sampling beers (Pints N Paws), Alive After Five (2nd Thursday of each month) a sofa race (Sofas and Suds), food trucks, or drag shows. We do it up big here during the holidays too – celebrating Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, Christmas and Easter. SHOP: Sanford has developed a reputation for antiques, and while that still holds true, Boxelder and Magpies are retail trailblazers downtown, paving the way for others to take the plunge and open shop. There is a lot of retail opportunity and I feel confident it will expand with time. For now, visit one of these unique shops for home goods and gifts. The “Main Street” in our authentic and unique downtown is thriving.

Smiling Bison recently went all in and closed their downtown Orlando location to focus on Sanford. The District and Tennessee Truffle are other examples of farm to table fare found right here in Sanford. There are so many things to look forward to– the Mayfair Hotel renovation and reopening; new breweries; the revitalization of our former train depot; and of course, the “Catalyst Site.” Our city leaders have recently been in communication with the leaders of Asheville, NC, a city like our own. They are learning more about what they do and their success. I’ll leave you with an ironic and humorous anecdote I recently heard: A visitor from Asheville recently walked into Celery City Craft, and, intrigued by their custom shuffleboard inside, he sketched out the idea, took it back with him, and built it. Today this little piece of Sanford inspiration is alive in an Asheville brewery!

First, Sanford is a waterfront city with a vibrant sailing community. I stopped my car and imagined all the endless fun. An interesting waterfront city with unique and authentic history. There are few Florida cities that have such a well-preserved downtown that tells a story without ever having to read a plaque. The size and amount of the historic fabric in its buildings, street grid, park space and historic homes immediately tells you that Sanford is a city with historic depth. More importantly, the recently approved new urban infill downtown/waterfront development (catalyst) is building a bright future on the foundation of Sanford’s past. The city’s redevelopment attracts the next generation of creative residents who want a walkable, bike friendly small urban city, surrounded by a beautiful environment, with quick access to Orlando by rail. There will be a new urban vibrancy to Sanford. Improving the connection of the historic downtown with the waterfront will accomplish the goal of making Sanford an even greater place to live, work and play. However, a well-designed city is nothing without great people. Again, I was only in town for a few hours, but in that time, I met many residents, business owners, elected officials and city staff that share a common interest for their city: a desire to make Sanford better, a shared love for their community, a common value to be real friends and neighbors. In the end, it’s the awesome people that make a city unique and Sanford’s residents are just that!

“If I was not the City Manager for the city of St. Augustine, I could live in Sanford.It’s a neat city.” I have lived my whole life in Florida and somehow never visited Sanford until a few months ago. The occasion was to be a guest speaker in the Sanford Historic Preservation Lecture Series, presented by the city of Sanford. I did not expect to discover such a charming city. On my next trip down to Orlando I made a point to take my wife to Sanford to show her the town. Why show my wife Sanford? If I was not the City Manager for the city of St. Augustine, I could live in Sanford. It’s a neat city.

John joined the City of St. Augustine in May 1998 as the Utilities Director. He was promoted to the position of Chief Operations Officer in November, 2003. As the Chief Operations Officer, he worked in all areas of public administration but his greatest challenge was parking and traffic management issues. In April, 2010, John was promoted to City Manager by a unanimous vote of the City Commission. He is well regarded for his innovations and creativity in reducing the costs of government operations and public consensus building. A native of Miami, John graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and a minor in Environmental Sciences in 1985. John is married to Felicia Regan who teaches elementary music education at Otis Mason Elementary School in St. Augustine. Their passion is sailing which led to their relocation to St. Augustine. John is a member of a local runner’s club, and has run the Chicago, San Antonio and Marine Corps marathons. He has been a registered Republican since the age of 18. John and Felicia have two adult children.

Q. PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHERE YOU GREW UP? Nelson: I am a Sanford native and was born in the old hospital at First Street and Mellonville Avenue (now the county services building). I grew up in the Loch Arbor neighborhood next to the Mayfair Golf Course. My family used to ride ATVs where Seminole Towne Center and Heathrow are now located, and I can remember when there was no on/off ramp at I-4 for 25th Street! I graduated from Seminole High School and UCF and now work as the Business Manager at my family’s business, Harrell & Beverly Transmissions & Auto Repair. Christina: I grew up in Altamonte Springs, so I’ve never been far from Sanford! Even though I was just a few exits south of Sanford I didn’t really know anything about the city until I met Nelson in college. We both graduated from UCF and I have been working for the university for over 13 years as a graphic designer. We moved into our Sanford Heights home (just outside the Historic District) in 2006.It’s been a privilege to watch Sanford grow and attract people who are passionate about living in a diverse, creative, and unique community. Q. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING IN SANFORD? Nelson: One of the best things is location. Approximately one mile to the south is my work and approximately one mile to the north is Downtown. Christina is envious of my daily commute which consists of only two stoplights (depending on which route I take) compared to her daily commute from Sanford to UCF.

Our family business has been in the same location since 1959. I tell people we have to be doing something right to not be run out of town after all these years, especially in the auto repair industry. Living and working in Sanford means that our customers are our neighbors, friends, and people we see out and about. It keeps us honest and always striving to exceed expectations. Q. AS A VERY ACTIVE COUPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS YOUR BEST ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR PROMOTING SANFORD? Christina: I think the Love Your Shorts Film Festival has given us the widest reach and broadest audience for promoting Sanford because we get to invite filmmakers from around the world to visit. The first couple of years of the festival were incredibly nerve wracking for me because filmmakers from California, Canada, and Germany were attending and I was unsure how they would perceive Sanford. But due to everyone’s hospitality, and how business

& audiences embraced the festival, the art form, and the filmmakers, they had a wonderful time! I was relieved they saw the same charm and amenities that we love about Sanford too. And it’s hard to take credit for anything Nelson and I do to “promote” Sanford because it’s an amazing collective effort by everyone. Neighbors, friends, families, and businesses support and cheer on one another which creates an environment that’s easy to get involved in and fosters fun events, city improvements, and a camaraderie that can’t be duplicated anywhere else. Q. LOVE YOUR SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL HAS BEEN SELECTED AS THE 2017 BEST INDOOR EVENT IN SANFORD, FL. WHAT DOES THIS NEWS MEAN TO YOU AND FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS THAT HAVE HELPED ALONG THE WAY? Nelson: The recognition is meaningful because it comes from our community. LYSFF was built by the community and exists because those in our community love it enough to keep it going and growing. Gene and Nancy Kruckemyer, Frank Loose, and my wife and I are the founders, and we each brought something special to the table that helped make LYSFF a reality. We are honored to be part of this event and excited to see where it goes in the future. Thank you, voters! Q. WHAT DO NELSON & CHRISTINA LIKE TO DO FOR FUN? Christina: We love to travel! Traveling gets us out of our comfort zone and it has given us so much insight into other cultures’ values and norms. Sanford will always be our home, but we enjoy experiencing life in other areas of the world too. And then we are fond of comparing those experiences to our life in Sanford. Sometimes we come back with a new perspective, or sometimes we end up really missing home! Q. DRINK SANFORD IS YOUR LATEST CREATIVE ADVENTURE-CAN YOU SHARE WHAT IT MEANS? Christina: Drink Sanford was really more of a personal art project that Nelson started a few years ago. He began the Instagram account @DrinkSanford after being inspired by a similar Instagrammer in Jacksonville. It is a fun way to capture the moments and drinks that we were enjoying at our local restaurants, bars, and cafes. Over time the project has sort of grown organically alongside the beverage scene here. Whether it’s a latte at Café di Riverwalk, a new brew from one of the local breweries, or a cocktail creation by Kelly at the Smiling Bison, it has given us a greater appreciation and understanding of what makes a great drink and the atmosphere that it’s being enjoyed in. There are so many places in Sanford now that are doing all of that wonderfully. We’re just having fun sharing that with our followers, both local and international, with that same appreciation. It’s been a great way to share Sanford’s craft beverage scene with the rest of the world and we’ve formed some great friendships because of it.

Nelson: Drink Sanford started off as an art project for me but it has turned into a learning experience that we both enjoy. Christina is apt to go past the surface of a drink and learn how an ingredient or a recipe ties into history. It’s cool to taste a whiskey that was the same type of whiskey George Washington and his Continental Army would have had. Every drink is full of history to some degree and we’ve explored how beverages have played a role in various cultures, including our own Christian faith. I like to dig deeper into the philosophical and theological aspects of it. In the Bible, Noah shows us how one can abuse alcohol by turning to it in a time of distress while Jesus shows us how it can be part of a wonderful celebration. Fast forward to the Middle Ages, and monasteries throughout Europe were making their own beer and wine as an act of hospitality and charity for weary travelers. Today, some of the best beer in the world is still made by these same monasteries and is available here in Sanford at Buster’s Bistro. We’re unsure where this adventure will take us as there’s much more in store for Sanford, but we are enjoying the ride! Q. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT SANFORD, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Christina: I think if anyone could just snap their fingers and change something about Sanford, it wouldn’t be Sanford. The thing I love about this town is the growing pains, the challenges, and the unusual and exciting ways it changes. It’s not cookie-cutter and it’s not your typical suburb. Would I like more bike racks downtown? Sure, but I also look forward to the process of getting them there. Nelson: Sometimes I think we make things harder than they need to be. We should never forfeit the things that make Sanford unique, but we shouldn’t have to spin our wheels trying to solve problems that other cities have already solved. Sanfordites, city leaders, and business owners should be open to observing and learning how others have been successful and then implement it in our own Sanford-way. More about Nelson and Christina…. Nelson, a Sanford native, is the business manager at his family business Harrell & Beverly Transmissions & Auto Repair. The shop has been in Sanford since 1959. Christina is a Florida native who grew up in Altamonte Springs. She is a graphic designer for the University of Central Florida, where she and Nelson met in 2001. They were married in 2005 and moved into Sanford in 2006. Since then they have been active in the Downtown Sanford community. With friends, they created the Love Your Shorts Film Festival in 2010. Nelson has served as the Festival Director and as President of the Sanford Historic Trust. Christina has freelanced for several nonprofits in Sanford, started the H.S.S. Tweed Ride, and co-produced “A Tribe Called Sanford.” They are both enjoying promoting Sanford through their latest creative adventure, Drink Sanford, sharing all things beverage related in the city.

According to a personal account held at the Sanford Museum, in 1871 Henry Shelton Sanford was drinking tea at the home of Judge J. Wofford Tucker. Tucker was one of the two men who had just purchased a tract of land ranging east from today’s Sanford Avenue to the western border of Mellonville, sprawling south from Lake Monroe to 5th Street. Just a year before in 1870, Henry Sanford had purchased 23 square miles directly to the west, having laid them along a planned grid which extended from the lakefront to 10th Street. Sanford remarked to the judge and his family, “I now have a town, but it has no name.” It was suggested by Judge Tucker’s daughter that this piece of land should bear his name. And so it did. Henry Sanford founded this city with a vision that on the banks of Lake Monroe, a major city would rise and utilize the harbor to become the ‘Gate City of South Florida.’ This dream has thus far proven elusive for the city of Sanford. Over the last 140 years, Sanford has had prosperous periods, only to see them interrupted by acts of God and man alike. On the eve of the Sanford’s 140th birthday, having already proven itself resilient to fires, freezes, corrupt politicians, and economic downturns which have stunted its growth, the city is in the midst of widespread economic resurgence and development. Today, Sanford embraces art, food, culture, and craft, pushing closer to realizing Henry Shelton Sanford’s vision of a prosperous, bustling, economic and cultural hub on the banks of Lake Monroe.

Daniel relocated to Central Florida in 2007 after nearly 10 years of active duty service in the United States Air Force. He is currently an attorney living and running his legal practice in Sanford, and teaches American history at both the University of Central Florida and Seminole State College. Daniel also holds a position in the Greater Sanford Chamber of Commerce, and is very charity, community, and civic minded regarding all things Sanford.

Consider yourself in this situation: You have a small but highly acclaimed, successful restaurant in Sanford. It generates a successful breakfast and lunch business. But locals beg you have a dinner service. However, that’s a lot of work when you are the chef/owner and it all falls on you. But you devise a plan. What happens to you if you’re in Sanford and your “competition” gets wind of your plan to be open during their dinner hours? Yep, you got it: the “competition” volunteers their time and efforts to help get your dinner service successfully off the ground.

A rising tide raises all boats, and local Sanford restauranteurs realize that helping one succeed helps all succeed. So, my hat is off to Kendra Wallace of Rabbitfoot Records and Ron Thomas of The Smiling Bison for helping Chef Nat Russell of The Tennessee Truffle get his successful dinner service up and running. This is a terrific win for Sanford and those who love great food. And this is one more reason why there are so many great choices for “where to eat” in beautiful, historic, downtown Sanford. These folks know the value of teamwork, cooperation, and coordination. Well done!

This is the story of the new evening hours for Sanford’s highly acclaimed chef Nat Russell of The Tennessee Truffle. But it’s all happened due to the assistance of “competitors” Ron Thomas of The Smiling Bison, and Kendra Wallace of Rabbitfoot Records. Both local proprietors/partners volunteered to step in and help Chef Nat get a great dinner service off the ground, and now Sanford has another awesome choice for a tasty dinner menu, 4 nights a week (Wed-Sat).

While everything I’ve had at The Tennessee Truffle at all times has always been spot-on, two of the new dinner dishes deserve special mention. But beware, Chef Nat uses fresh local ingredients, so the menu changes based on availability and season. First was his take on Shrimp N Grits, with fresh Port Orange Shrimp, perfectly cooked, on a bed of stone ground grits that are a staple of his breakfast service. Another favorite of mine was the pickled shrimp appetizer. Four huge shrimps are twice-pickled and served on a fresh johnnycake. The corn of the johnnycake was so fresh and crispy, I could almost smell the local field it grew in! Both dishes are amazing and I highly recommend them.

Leon Konieczny is a local Central Florida foodie and food blogger who’s been writing about Sanford And Seminole County area “good eats” restaurants for the past 7 years. He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops (small businesses) where high quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally (rarely) eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks—in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.

Sanford, Florida is in the midst of unprecedented new development, the most development we have experienced in twenty years. The City of Sanford is located in a prime location within the Central Florida region offering varied modes of transportation such as Amtrak’s AutoTrain, SunRail, easy access to I-4 and the Orlando Sanford International Airport. Situated along beautiful Lake Monroe, Sanford is also becoming an attractive destination city with several great amenities to offer folks, such as a regional zoo and a vibrant historic downtown. Access to diverse housing, education, health and wellness, dining, entertainment and new business development is the foundation for an attractive community that offers an exceptional quality of life for all. This map displays a few examples of current development in the City of Sanford: The research has been done and the results equal a need to offer increased residential development in Sanford. The Thornebrooke project will offer single family residents and townhomes, built in great proximity to downtown and I-4, off SR 46. More families mean more space is needed to educate their children. Sanford’s Hamilton Elementary School is being remodeled to accommodate the city’s growth. The existing open pod classrooms will be reconfigured into self-contained classrooms. The media center will be redesigned as a collaborative learning hub. In addition, Seminole County Public Schools will be building a 21,864 square foot vocational/technical building on the campus of Seminole High facility to offer vocational courses to Sanford’s student population. Sanford offers a plethora of dining and entertainment choices, with incredible mom and pop local fare, positioned in historic downtown, soon to open 8,000 square foot Bahama Breeze, a tropical dining experience with an additional 2,700 square foot outdoor area, located on Rinehart Rd. near the Seminole Towne Center mall area.

A healthy, mind, body and spirit is important to a great quality of life. Not only does the city offer access to over 27 beautifully maintained public parks, increased health and wellness options will be coming to fruition when LA Fitness opens at the old Albertson’s plaza in Sanford. The center will be re-anchored by LA fitness along with other feature tenants. A project on the radar, located close to the two largest employers in Sanford; Seminole State College and the Orlando-Sanford International Airport. Access to medical care rounds out the picture-perfect Sanford painting. The Sanford Medical Group located on W. 1st Street will be close to 4,000 square feet of space, a plus for all. HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR NIKKI NAMDAR

“I still get nervous. Worthy is probably too big of a word,” Colegrove said. “I work with all these other nonprofits, so many out there would be more deserving than myself. We just want to be a voice for them. We want to be that entity that’s able to put them there.” She adds that none of them get paid to do this. They do it from their hearts. Colegrove moved to Sanford in 2011 to be close to her grandchildren. She immediately felt something in Sanford. “Two years ago, if this is what you said I’d be here doing, I would say you’re so funny. It’s just something about these ladies,” she said. “Sanford is welcoming.” “There is something about Sanford when you step into this city.” Kim Colegrove won the people’s choice award for Favorite Humanitarian. Colegrove is the president of The Ladies 327 Supper Club. “Oh wow, I am really surprised,” she said. “It’s just very overwhelming and there were so many more deserving candidates.” The Ladies 327 Supper Club is a non-profit organization out of Sanford. With members from all around Central Florida, the group conducts campaigns to raise awareness and funds for those in need. According to their Facebook page, “Our mission is to support our community - by shopping local, eating local, supporting local charities and food pantries, raising awareness for local issues, and partnering with local businesses and groups, we are not only stimulating our local economy, but addressing pressing issues within our community.” She proudly stated how she and the ladies once raised $1,800 in one night of Bingo to get a boy a wheelchair. One woman in the group told Colegrove, “Thank you for teaching me it’s okay to live again.” She wants the club to be a place where people feel safe. Every day she meets with other nonprofits to collaborate. She reiterates how there are so many other nonprofits and it’s a surprise she’s the one taking home the award. An introvert by nature, she expresses why.

With her Yorkshire Terrier on her lap, Colegrove emotionally explained the struggles of her life from having nothing to being in an abusive relationship to being a cancer survivor. She stared out of her living room window as her makeup smeared the edges of her teary eyes. “I came from nothing, literally. To have the life I have now is more than I thought I would have,” she said. “I know what these people go through. They get so excited to get a Christmas box, something we would take advantage of. I don’t want to see anybody go through what I went through. I know what it’s like to be hungry. I know what it’s like to not have clothes. I know what it’s like to be told I have a disease. If you would have said this is what I was [a humanitarian], I would have said no. it’s just the right thing to do. I know what it’s like to have things you wish you had.”

Nikki is a writer/photographer in Central Florida. Finding stories in her city is an adventure she lives for. She loves photographing people in their most natural element--laughing, crying, connecting with their world. Her work can resonate with anyone who wants to feel a spark of emotion. She resides in downtown Sanford with her pup, Cookie, and a cuddly fur family of felines.

“That makes me feel good. It is heartwarming to know that’s how everyone feels about me. And while I am away for so long, they keep me in mind and didn’t forget about me.” Henry was born in Haiti and came to the United States with his parents when he was just 5 months old. For the longest time, he couldn’t live the American dream because he wasn’t a legal citizen of the United States. The only way for him to become a citizen was for Dorvil to go back to Haiti to fix his immigration status. The Sanford Community came together and wrote letters to support him (#helphenry) and his case was immediately expedited shortly after. Henry Dorvil has won the best character award as part of My Sanford Magazine’s Best of Sanford Awards. When he found out he won the award, he said “That makes me feel good. It is heartwarming to know that’s how everyone feels about me. And while I am away for so long, they keep me in mind and didn’t forget about me.” Dorvil moved to Sanford three years ago and has worked at many of the Historic District’s restaurants and bars. A self-taught videographer, he began a production company to pursue his passions, called GoodVibesTelevision. He refers to himself as a “pest” because he was everywhere in Downtown Sanford, whether he was working the bars or filming for restaurants. “What I learned in three years in Sanford probably would have taken me 10 years in schooling, in life, or just any other city because of the people around me. You know how they say you are the people you surround yourself with? In Sanford, you’re surrounded by all these ambitious people, business owners with awesome talents and drive,” Dorvil said. He thanks Sanford for their support. While in Haiti, he stays with a family that doesn’t even have internet. He spends his time reading, attending family functions, and occasionally goes to the beach. But most of the time, he prepares for his life back in Sanford. He has four journals full of ideas and projects he is prepared to implement when he returns. In addition to work and his city, he wants to return home to his disabled mother. Like his production company, he maintains good vibes only while in his home country. He said, “Every day I just have to be positive. I never doubted coming home. I know in my heart, I’ll be home in a month or two.” BEST SANFORD CHARACTER

“Sanford has a first-rate community and is an excellent place for a young family!” Sanford has been called a beer city, a historic city, and the friendly city, but rarely is it called a family city. Newly married, my wife and I moved to Sanford, more concerned about the nightlife than family events. During the past ten months, our daughter has allowed us to discover how family friendly Sanford is. As I reflect on our brief time as a family, I recall park visits, trips to the library, long walks on a beautiful lakefront, sofa racing, beer festivals, tree lightings, and visits to family friendly businesses. Beautiful parks and a busy library are a huge asset to the families of Sanford. Downtown residents are fortunate to have these in walking distance, for others it is a quick car ride away. Speaking of walking, the walkability of our downtown is an important contributor to our city’s family friendliness. Our family gets light exercise and talks about our day, all while spending quality time together amongst beautiful historic homes and cobblestone streets. In addition to daily activities there are many annual events to attend in Sanford. It is great to live in a city where you can go to a block party, beer festival, or Oktoberfest and be welcome as a family! With too many specific events to mention, one of our favorites is Christmas in the Square, the annual tree lighting ceremony. Hundreds of families hit the streets and partake in this ever-important ritual of Christmas. In Sanford, family friendly businesses are as common as varieties of beer. From gyms with daycare, to visits to family friendly restaurants or hanging out at the patio of a watering hole, most businesses are welcoming to families. These businesses not only know my wife and I, but they know our daughter, too. It is comforting to know that we chose the city of Sanford to begin the adventure of parenthood. We are very fortunate that we have great city facilities, annual events, and family friendly businesses. Sanford has a firstrate community and is an excellent place for a young family!

The Sanford Civic Center was constructed in 1958 during the height of popularity for the Mid-Century Modern style of architecture. MidCentury Modern buildings were characterized by clean lines, lack of ornamentation, and space-age influenced design details. Defined shapes (such as spheres and rectangles) were juxtaposed against one another to create dramatic visual effects. Materials were expressed in natural ways and were often left unfinished. Stained or sealed wood (not painted), exposed concrete and exposed structural elements such as beams and columns are very characteristic of buildings constructed in the MidCentury Modern style. The style emphasized the relationship between interior spaces and their surrounding sites by utilizing large expanses of glass to take advantage of dramatic views and landscaping. The style typically allowed for an abundance of natural light into interior spaces. * The Sanford Civic Center was altered over the years, which significantly and adversely impacted the original Mid-Century Modern design intent. The clear span arched windows were covered with solid walls, draperies were added to the auditorium space, obstructing the views in and out, and in many areas natural wood surfaces were painted over. The buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current paint colors are not consistent with the original design scheme. The building was constructed during the Jim Crow era of segregation and equal access was not provided. For this reason, it was the site of two Civil Rights marches led by students of Crooms Academy, events which became newsworthy on a regional and statewide level. In recent history, it was the site in which over 20,000 people peacefully participated in protest to the Trayvon Martin tragedy in 2012. The building was also the site of a speech by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2016.

Sanford’s Old-Fashioned RENOVATED HOUSES K E V I N D. G A R D N E R

Sanford offers a marked contrast with many nearby communities. While the many gated developments in the area draw new Florida residents, Sanford’s old-fashioned charm appeals to a different kind of homebuyer. Of course, Sanford’s historic homes often come with the need to make renovations. Many of these homes have not seen significant updates in decades. This reality can bring challenges—from the usual complications involving old wiring and leaky roofs to navigating the Historic District’s S-codes—but also opportunities. New homeowners in historic Sanford have the chance to take part in the city’s resurgence. With property values on the rise and the downtown booming, it’s a good time to make a Sanford your new (or old) home! Sarah Miller grew up in the city but has lived in New England for about half her life. For the past twenty years, she and her husband have split time between a retirement house in Florida and a two-hundred-year-old home in New Hampshire, one of several such homes that they have renovated up North. Their experience has served them well, but in some ways their Sanford house was more challenging than those of antebellum New England. “Our Sanford house was built in 1948—the era the South began building with poured concrete block and slab construction. Much more difficult to hang a picture much less knock out a wall,” she said. “We were much more limited in wiring, plumbing, etc., not being able to get into the flooring and walls.” Kimberly Jones and her husband were fortunate enough to find a house that was nearly fully renovated. While the big things were done, she acknowledges that with a historic home, the work, to some extent, is never done. “Don’t ask about the windows. Don’t ask about the light fixtures. Don’t ask about the flat paint on the trim. Don’t ask about the fence that fell in,” she said. “Renovated? Sure. But there’s always a list.” Jones advises anyone who is considering renovating a home to live elsewhere while the major work is happening. She also encourages prospective owners to do their best to understand the house as it is and accept its limitations. It may not be possible to correct every idiosyncrasy or fix every imperfection. But to Jones, those features are part of what make a historic home worth the effort. “I think what motivates us to live in an old house is the preservation of something beautiful that can no longer be found,” she said. “The way the wood was planed before there were fancy machines, a hand-carved Newell post, or an old claw-foot tub are just treasures.” 28

Leon Konieczny took a different tack: he is building a new home in the Historic District. After an unsuccessful home search, he bought a parcel and decided to build. “Building a new home gave us a great amount of leeway on materials and design that is not available to an existing historic structure,” he said. Even so, Konieczny had to adhere to the city’s regulations regarding fitting in with the district’s character. “We expect that one day people will walk past our home and think to themselves, that’s a great, well-preserved historic (old) home, while not realizing that it was just built in 2017 to look like an old home on the outside,” he said. “Yes, we designed our home to look old on the outside (while utilizing modern building materials), but it is definitely new on the inside.”

Building a new home has allowed Konieczny to take advantage of the district’s proximity to downtown while avoiding the vagaries of a historic renovation. “There are so many great things going on in Sanford that at times we have to retire to our home just to relax and catch our breath and take a break,” Konieczny said. “Great festivals, street parties, events, fundraisers, theaters, movies, parades, and the list goes on and on—there seems to be always something happening in Sanford, something for everyone. It’s a great place to live, work, and play, and we love it.” Ginger Hoke and her husband have played a part in the city’s renaissance by rehabbing and renting out nearly a dozen homes in the Historic District, Sanford Heights, and Goldsboro. Since restoring old properties boosts the surrounding area, they see their work as community building, to the point that they will ask passing neighbors to weigh in on possible paint colors. When looking for a property to renovate, Hoke recommends focusing on “good bones and a good layout.” “You can usually work with whatever else is there,” she said. Hoke also prefers to highlight her properties’ history. “If you’re restoring a historic house, save the historical features and build from that so you honor the house’s architecture,” she said.

OKTOBERFEST IN SANFORD C L A U D I A M U N D LO S Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival and has been held every year in Munich, Germany for more than 200 years. Over 5 million people visit this 2-week-long festival that kicks off on the third Saturday in September every year. As Bavarian girl living in Central Florida my heart beats higher every year around October for one simple reason: it’s Oktoberfest season! LIVING IN HARMONY with OTHERS—

POINTS OF INTEREST D R . M I G U E L A . G O N Z A L E Z , M H S, M S, L M F T

In music, harmony is the sound of things (voices, instruments) that go well together. People singing in harmony are in tune with each other, by listening to each other. And just like in music, when we live in harmony (again, “in tune” with one another) we not only contribute to the overall well-being of their neighborhoods and communities, but to our own positive physical and mental health. It is well documented that people that live in areas where there is constant war, or political turmoil and instability, suffer from a variety of physical and mental health ailments—cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and others. However, even with this knowledge, oftentimes we don’t seem able to find a way to break down the barriers that separate us, and our communities. Of course, we know very well what these barriers: race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and socioeconomic class, among many others. Frequently, it seems that we choose to ignore them, to erect new barriers, or to re-erect old ones; and as such, the social fragmentation, division and distancing from one another continues. But, what can we do to bring harmony to our neighborhood and community? Here are some ideas.

PEOPLE THAT SHARE VALUES AND BELIEFS TEND TO ENJOY MORE POSITIVE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS.

So, it stands to reason that, if we focus on the commonalities we have with other people, rather than the differences, it should follow that there will be less conflict, if at all. However, to find these commonalities, we must get to know our neighbors. Yes, our rushed lives frequently get in the way of doing this, but if we try, we’ll realize that most people want the best for their families, want to have a decent job, want to educate their children, etc. So, potentially, we can find at least a few topics on which we can agree. Too many times we focus on what other people do, say, or believe, that we don’t like, ignoring areas where we share some common ground.

ANOTHER ISSUE THAT AFFECTS RELATIONSHIPS IS OUR INABILITY TO LISTEN TO OTHERS, IN AN OBJECTIVE, ATTENTIVE WAY, AND WITHOUT INTERRUPTIONS.

If we assume that the point of communicating is creating understanding, then listening attentively and processing information objectively is a requirement to understanding. We need to do our best not to drift away from the conversation or try to put together our rebuttal to what they are saying, while the other person is talking. We should also refrain from passing negative judgments and providing destructive criticism. To this writer, listening requires our brain and our heart.

ALSO IMPORTANT, IN MANY IF NOT ALL AREAS OF OUR LIVES, IS TO SET PROPER BOUNDARIES WITH FAMILY, FRIENDS AND OTHERS.

Help them understand that there are certain conversation topics you will not engage in, and actions that you do not agree with or condone. It is up to us to set these boundaries and have people adhere to them. To do this, we need not be confrontational or argumentative. People that manage to get us into a confrontation, hold some control over our emotions, and this is not what we want.

WE SHOULD TRY TO AVOID BRINGING UP DIVISIVE AND CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS WHEN IN CONVERSATION WITH OTHERS, PARTICULARLY AROUND PEOPLE WE DON’T REALLY KNOW.

There are certain topics, like those that involve religion and politics, that can quickly trigger another person into a tirade, turning a conversation into a bitter argument. Frequently, it is better to talk about topics of general interest (movies, children’s health, the weather, etc.), avoiding anything that can lead to an unproductive, if not destructive, confrontation.

FINALLY, NOT EVERYBODY WILL LIKE US OR AGREE WITH US, AND IT IS LIKELY THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WE ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE.

It is important to recognize that there are people, and we could be included here, that we just cannot find common ground with, no matter what actions we take to make the relationship work. So, it is a better choice to just stay out of their lives, allowing them to live their own in whatever way they see fit. Choosing not to be friends with someone is not the same as choosing to be their enemy. So, at the end of the day, in a slight variation of the popular saying, I believe it to be true that “we can catch more people with honey than with vinegar.
