SPOTLIGHT SANFORD The St. Johns River Festival of the Arts On May 6th and 7th 2017 Sanford’s Historic Downtown District will once again come alive with color and texture as local and nationallyrenowned artists put their best works on display. Marking its 6th year, The St. John’s River Festival of the Arts transforms this quaint little community into a bustling hive of activity. Situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Monroe, Sanford is home to locallyowned breweries, restaurants, shops and galleries. They all provide the perfect backdrop for one of the best weekends of the year to visit the “Jewel on the St John’s!” Sanford is known for its unique and diverse style and the artists do not disappoint! be no different! With whimsical & quirky perspectives, these artists are a feast for the senses. You can even see “Art in Action” as artists working in various mediums demonstrate their talent and technique before your very eyes. Or you can “Create Your Own Art” at workshops scheduled throughout the weekend. And as you stroll you will enjoy the “Art of Music” with live performances throughout the City. Then, to satisfy your appetite, you can stop in at one of the local restaurants or the “Culinary Arts Court” in Magnolia Square. Come spend the day exploring beautiful Historic Downtown Sanford, and don’t forget to support the arts by taking home a favorite piece to add to your collection!

Dear Friends, Spring means not only a new season to celebrate, but also a chance to share the fruits of our labor. This issue is an invitation for all of you to explore our community. No discussion of small town utopia would be complete without at least one mention of the storied front porch. The front porch of a small-town home is the stuff of legends - reminiscent of another time and place – reminding folks of a simpler time they remember either from their childhoods or from television (references to Mayberry anyone?!) literature, the stage. Nothing says AMERICA like a front porch - typically with a large flag hanging proudly out front. There is no wrong time to be out there, anytime of day or night. What’s more relaxing than lying on a porch swing under a slow-turning fan, reading a great book? It’s the perfect spot to drink things, your morning coffee, iced tea in the afternoon and of course that great Sanford tradition, cocktailing whenever. It’s the place for both stolen moments alone and conversations with friends. I can’t think of a better place to be on a Friday night than at a spontaneous porch party. During one such late night gathering, friends of mine reported seeing guests of another kind, bicycle-riding apparitions who disappeared into the night. My husband likes to joke that we must allot at least two hours to walk downtown to account for all the porch-sitting friends we will see along the way and stop to chat with.

Sanford has long been a Hollywood favorite and around Historic Downtown Sanford – who can forget the scene from “My Girl” when Vada stopped and talked to the teacher she was crushing on while he was outside on the porch painting? That porch happens to be on Magnolia Avenue here in Downtown. Around these parts, you just never know when a scout is going to leave a note on your door soliciting to cast your porch in a commercial or movie. Nationwide Insurance recently found the perfect porch for their commercial on a particularly scenic and idyllic porch in the heart of the Historic District. If you visit newer communities like Baldwin Park, you will see that people are building homes and even entire downtowns in an attempt to replicate what is found right here in Sanford, complete with large front porches - people really crave that neighborhood feel and authenticity that Sanford has in spades.

Tammy Agnini is a lifelong Sanford resident and currently serves as Chairman of the City of Sanford’s Historic Preservation Board. She splits her time between her family and the corporate world where she works as an HR Benefits Administrator. You can catch her on the front porch spending time with her husband Jeb and two little girls - Sloane, 5 and Sawyer, 18 months.

in Central Florida, was born in the garage of Sanford resident and theatre guru John DiDonna. A 17-year resident of Sanford, John has a distinguished background in producing, directing and acting in Central Florida and throughout the country. Currently, his main focus is his position as professor and the Artistic Director of Theatre at Valencia College as well as Phantasmagoria. He founded the performance troupe 8 years ago, and has watched it grow beyond his wildest dreams. In the process, he also met his wife, Dion Leonhard.

Alive After 5 Announces Phantasmagoria to Fill April 13ths “Mystery Month” Theme As many know, the Alive After 5 street party has been a mainstay in downtown Sanford for over ten years. What many might not know is another Sanford-based spectacle has been thrilling audiences around the country for that same period of time. Phantasmagoria, widely regarded as one of the most versatile performance troupes 6

Dion was born and raised in Sanford; she started dancing at the age of 3 and learned her craft at the longtime Sanford establishment Miriam and Valerie’s School of Dance Arts. After several years of dancing professionally out of state, Leonhard returned to Central Florida and was recruited by a Phantasmagoria chorographer to be in the original cast. Dion now performs and choreographs for Phantasmagoria and is also a dance teacher and choreographer for the Lake Howell High School Show Choir and Chorus, a guest choreographer with Seminole High School’s Show Choir and a teacher at Dancer’s Point dance academy. John and Dion now live in one of Sanford’s historic houses and are proud to call our quirky little community home. Phantasmagoria is deliciously difficult to describe; it is partly Gothic horror, Steampunk, and fairy tale inspired by works of literature

and legend all told through an eclectic variety of performance arts including fire dancers, sword swallowers, jugglers and musicians. They even have a children’s storyteller to entertain the little ones. The troupe’s range is as wide as their abilities: from Gothic horror, themed stage shows to the more whimsical and fanciful traveling troupe that will be featured at Alive After 5 and much in between. They perform everything from low (taverns and bars) to high (Orlando Museum of Art), from large (Orange County Convention Center) to small (private parties) and love it all. Their 32 players make up several performance troupes that play year-round and in multiple states.

P H OTO B Y C H R I S B R I D G E S

John is thrilled to bring his company to Alive After 5. Phantasmagoria has had several smaller performances in Sanford but this will be the largest engagement to date in their hometown and they are looking forward to bringing a “Carnival” mood to First Street. DiDonna believes Alive After 5 to be the perfect atmosphere for Phantasmagoria. “We want to take ownership of that street,” he said with an impish gleam in his eyes, “with an experience that will be whimsical and fun.” He envisions using the event’s main stage and several other spot performances as well as “strolling performing” throughout the festival to create a “sideshow atmosphere where everywhere you look there is something going on.” John concluded, “this is going to be interactive, we will be playing for and with people… having a good time together.” Sanford, prepare to be amazed, engaged and entertained! www.sanfordwelcomecenter.com/alive-after-5 P H OTO B Y C H R I S B R I D G E S Brian loves his adopted hometown of Sanford and has played many leadership roles in local organizations such as the Sanford Historic Trust, Creative Sanford, Inc and the Princess Theater. THE PRINCESS

IS NOW

DANGEROUS N I K K I N A M DA R

“It’s a dangerous proposition making a living in theatre...” Sanford’s Princess Theatre has crossed over to the wild side. Winnie Wenglewick was looking for a new office space and found herself in the heart of Sanford. After years in the theater business, she moved from downtown Orlando in November to open the Dangerous Theatre. She is the owner, producer, director, and “head whacko in charge,” as she refers to herself. She started her career as a volunteer at SAK Comedy Club. A year later, she began working for Orlando Fringe, the longest-running Fringe Theatre Festival in the US. She opened her first theater on Mills Avenue and still has one in Denver, Colorado. She hopes to open her next one right in the Historic District in mid-March. It will have two theaters, one traditional and the other cabaret. To create a strong engagement between the show and audience, she only seats 40-45 people. “It’s a dangerous proposition making a living in theatre, but also because of my years with Orlando Fringe, I fell in love with small intimate theater,” she said, referring to why she’d given her business this name. “Always a risk with very steep rent,” she said, laughing out loud. She laid back, one hand with a to-go drink while her other arm rested across the top of the couch. She casually pushed her legs to the side, where her knee peaked through a hole in her skirt. Her shoulder tattoos were exposed and with exciting topics, she theatrically used hand motions to explain her thoughts. She’s a one-woman army who is looking for plays that “have a message and market well.” She enjoys having the freedom to produce shows that address hot topics like sexual abuse and prostitution. “I don’t play by the rules.” A mother of an 11-year old boy, Wenglewick said they will be working on children programs as well. After a friend drove her out to see an office above The Imperial at Washburn Imports, she took a leap across the St. John’s River. Then decided to move out here, too, to avoid a long commute. “I’m so excited and terrified at the same time doing all this,” she said. “I’m sure my mother, wherever she is, is beside herself.” 8

Wenglewick’s mother passed away in February and was not supportive of her daughter’s theater ventures, advising her to get a job with benefits. “I’ll do theater until I die. It’s too safe doing anything else,” she said. “It’s not a job when you do what you love.” She says it is terrifying going on this journey, but enjoys Sanford’s sense of community that she has never felt anywhere else. “I have no sense of belonging in Denver because everything is out of the box. My theater is in a warehouse in Denver, so no real community or neighborhood to belong to.” Nikki is a writer/photographer in Central Florida. Finding stories in her city is an adventure she lives for. She loves photographing people in their most natural element--laughing, crying, connecting with their world. Her work can resonate with anyone who wants to feel a spark of emotion. She resides in downtown Sanford with her pup, Cookie, and a cuddly fur family of felines.

SANFORD FOODIE HIGHLIGHT

DOWNTOWN SANFORD & ITS ETERNAL DILEMMA:

WHERE TO EAT ? L E O N KO N I E C Z N Y

Anywhere you turn and any place you decide to dine in beautiful, historic, downtown Sanford, you are eating at a local gem. It is not challenging to find a good place to eat in Sanford, but it is very hard to decide where to go, there are so many choices. As a matter of fact, there is nowhere in Downtown Sanford that I don’t like to eat, there’s a place for every taste, every time of day, and every reason to eat out. The anchor of downtown restaurants is Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café which just celebrated its 15th year. With live entertainment on the weekends and a large outdoor seating area, the Gemütlichkeit is flowing freely, along with the German beer, dancing, and singing. The food and service is top notch, but in the evening, you’d better have a reservation or be prepared to wait, though even the wait is worth it. As you travel around downtown Sanford, you’ll hear the “zicke zacke, zicke zacke, hoi” chant, a signal that it’s time to drink up at Hollerbach’s.

10

Diagonally across the street, also with a large outdoor seating area, is the Breezeway. From sandwiches to fish and steak, there is something for everyone on their menu, with live music of one sort or another (including Karaoke at times) nearly every night of the week. Who doesn’t enjoy al fesco dining in Florida where you can do it year-round with such good

food? The Smiling Bison, just down Magnolia Square, is a recent gastroaddition to the Sanford dining scene. They have brought local-sourced, seasonal ingredients to their ever changing menu. Some staples remain, but each time you go, you can expect something new as well. “The Bison” (as locals call it) has excellent service as well as craft cocktails to go along with their top-notch food. Down the block on First Street you’ll find the breakfast/lunch “pop-up” restaurant that decided to stick around, The Tennessee Truffle. When locals talk about a great breakfast, “the Truffle” is almost always in the equation. The Truffle does locally sourced, fresh, seasonal ingredients and holds true to southern style food. Where else can you find ramps (aka a Tennessee truffle) used in a dish? The food is cooked to order and every dish shows great attention to detail. Their sausage gravy on a biscuit is truly “to die for,” along with other great menu selections. Do you have a taste for Greek and/or Italian food? Well, you’re in luck because Zorba’s has both. The pizza is great and the lasagna is even better. But dolmades (stuffed grape leaves)? I never cared for dolmades until I had

Celebrate

in Sanford, FL

them at Zorba’s, now I could eat a dozen, they are delicious. Zorba’s also has one of the most Veganfriendly menus in Sanford. Their portions are large and we’ve never left there anything but happy and full, often with take-out boxes. Looking for a quick lunch? There are two great choices in Corner Café and Taste of Thyme. Corner Café has indoor and outdoor seating, but also does a great to-go business with wonderful house-made soups, sandwiches, and desserts. Taste of Thyme has a great selection of to-go items, and a few seats inside as well. You can’t go wrong with either. Corner Café also does wonderful special dinners upon request/ reservation.

QUALITY AND FRESH MEXICAN FAMILY SPECIAL RECIPIES

Looking for variety? Head over to the Christo’s, a downtown staple for many years. There you can try a large assortment of dishes including burgers, pizza/calzone/stromboli, sandwiches, pasta, dinners, and a whole lot more. I challenge you to walk by their pastry/dessert case without wanting some! What about BBQ? Of course. The best brisket I ever had was at Fuel BBQ, an old gas station that’s been converted into a premier Sanford BBQ joint and is attached to a popular local watering hole. All of their meats are smoked right out back, so you’ll smell the BBQ before you even get close, and it tastes as great as it smells. How about some good ole diner food? Colonial Room has got you covered! Are you looking for a simple breakfast of eggs, sausage/bacon, home fries, and toast? This is the place to go, and a great value to boot. The have wonderful omelets and superb lunch/sandwich menus along with diner favorites like meatloaf and turkey. You cannot go wrong here if you’re in the mood for diner food for breakfast or lunch. Have a taste for some good Mexican food? You should try the newly opened El Zocalo, at the western end of the First Street dining/shopping district. Though only open a few months, I’ve enjoyed my meals here and hear great things from other locals as they discover this “new kid on the block.” Finally, at the other end of the First Street dining/shopping area and just around the corner down Sanford Avenue, is Negril Spice. If you want authentic Jamaican food, this is the place for you, you’ll think you’re in Kingston or Montego Bay. The décor is plain but the food is exceptional. Sanford truly has a dining problem, for those who cannot make a decision. But anywhere you turn and any place you decide to dine in beautiful, historic, downtown Sanford, you are eating at a local gem. Shh! Don’t tell anyone. It’s our little local secret! Leon Konieczny is a local Central Florida foodie and food blogger who’s been writing about Sanford And Seminole County area “good eats” restaurants for the past 7 years. He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops (small businesses) where high quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally (rarely) eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks—in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.

THE PARK’S

RIBBON CUTTING DAY

SANFORD PAW Sanford. In 2000, a group of local citizens led by Mike Knipfer collaborated on plans for a new use of the park site and formed the Friends of Paw Park organization. The group raised funds for creation of an off-leash park and presented their plans to city officials. Their efforts were successful and Paw Park of Historic Sanford opened in late Spring of 2001. In late 2013 the Sanford City Commission designated “Paw Park Village,” which includes Paw Park of Historic Sanford and the surrounding area. The designation strongly conveys the City’s commitment to revitalization and economic development within this area and further supports the existing businesses and off-leash dog park. As a result of the Paw Park Village designation, the City was able to obtain funds for revitalization of Paw Park of Historic Sanford, create on-street parking, handicap parking, and a 10’ trail path on Laurel Avenue. It is envisioned that the trail path will someday connect with the Goldsboro Trail to the southwest and the RiverWalk to the north. Revitalization of the park and surrounding improvements were made possible by the State of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity grant, Recreation Impact Fees, and Second Generation Tax revenues.

PARK HISTORY Shortly after Sanford was incorporated in 1877, Henry Shelton Sanford hired Mr. E.R. Trafford to draw a plat of the new city. The city was laid out on a grid with land set aside for churches, schools, and parks. Five of the original park sites still exist today, one of which is the site of Paw Park of Historic 14

PARK DESIGN The new park design features masonry gateways on the north and south entrances, small dog and large dog areas, a large grass paw print with play and agility equipment, self-filling and draining dog water bowls that are controlled by sensors, fire hydrant misters, informational kiosk, benches, cans,

planters, refurbished and new lighting, and public art. Elements of the Friends of Paw Park’s 2001 park fundraising efforts and sponsorships have been retained, such as walkways, lighting, and a stone fountain. Art is an important component of Paw Park Village and three art projects were highlighted on the park’s ribbon cutting day.

PAW PARK VILLAGE COMMUNITY ART PROJECT Seminole County 2013 Artist of the Year Jeff Sonksen, known for his “Paint the Trail” art, led a community art project to paint fence panels installed on the site of a future veterinarian clinic, located directly across the street from the park. The designs were created based on photographs of community pets (past and present). The panels were painted by volunteers during countless painting parties, Alive After Five and Art Walk events. Mr. Sonksen has donated hundreds of volunteer hours to the project and worked with many pet owners to bring the project to life. Judy Sarullo (Pet Rescue by Judy) owns the property where the fence panels are installed and the art project underscores her passion and commitment to our fourlegged friends.

MEMORIAL CHAINSAW SCULPTURE One of the signature elements of the park is its beautiful tree canopy. Many of these trees are historic and were planted early in the city’s development. Great care was taken to create a park plan that retains all healthy trees. When it was discovered that two trees were diseased and required removal, a fundraising effort led by Commissioner Patty Mahany focused on retaining one trunk for a chainsaw sculpture. This effort proved unsuccessful due to the significant deterioration and hollow condition of the trunk. Undeterred by this setback, the donors commissioned a

chainsaw sculpture of a large, reclaimed cypress trunk. Carved by chainsaw artist Mark Rice, the sculpture was "Created in honor of all of our beloved pets, past and present, who bring joy to our lives." The sculpture was made possible by the following generous donors: Seminole Farms Trust, Mr. Christopher Kelley; G W Properties, LLC, Mr. Michael Wisdom; The Briar Team, LLC, Mr. Mike Good; Reagan Center Development, Mr. Richard Wohlfarth; 17-92 Five Points, LLC, Mr. Syd Levy; City of Sanford Planning Director, Mr. Russ Gibson and City of Sanford Commissioner Patty Mahany and Mr. Sean Mahany.

METAL DOG SILHOUETTES Metal sculpture dog silhouettes welcome visitors to the large and small dog areas. The sculptures were cut, welded, and donated by Southern Technical College students Adarrius James and Brandon Linder, under the direction of instructor Jeanne Garmers. College employees Julie Herring and Mimi Diaz collaborated on design and implementation of the project. The project is ongoing and students will continue to create metal dog silhouettes to be installed along the fence between the large and small dog areas. Public Art Commission member Kim House is collaborating with the college to have the silhouettes painted by local artists prior to installation in the park. For more information visit www.sanfordfl.gov. Christine Dalton works as the Historic Preservation Officer and Community Planner for the City of Sanford. Christine is passionate about historic places. She teaches Historic Preservation at her Alma Mater, Rollins College. Her interests include all things historic, sailing, teaching, mentoring, and the arts.

CREATOR OF ST. JOHN’S RIVER FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS P E R L A B. C RO S BY

“With the help of our volunteers, it’s exciting to see downtown Sanford transformed to an art mecca.” “The festival is a celebration of the arts not just locally but regionally. It promotes creativity, appreciation of the arts and a better understanding of the many different art mediums.” On a personal level as a planner I like to refer to the quote “If your dreams do not scare you, they’re probably not big enough.” “El festival es una celebración de las artes, no solo desde un enfoque local sino también regional. Promueve la creatividad, la apreciación del arte y una mejor comprensión de la diversidad de técnicas existentes.” A nivel personal como organizadora me gusta citar esta frase “Si tus sueños no te asustan, probablemente no sean lo suficientemente grandes.” Q. PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR BACKGROUND, AND WHERE YOU GREW UP? R. I came to Florida from New Hampshire, raised in a picturesque small historic town. We are a large family with eight children. We were all fortunate to have been raised by parents who instilled in us the love of nature, to not shy away from hard work and to always stay focused on our goals. We all are craftsmen who learned to be creative and innovative. My husband and I settled in my hometown renovating our first home. It was an old cape full of history, built in 1732, and was part of the Underground Railroad. We found and uncovered the hiding room that was undetectable connected to the fieldstone root cellar. Later we added our pottery/art studio to the property where we taught pottery and other art mediums to the surrounding communities. For years, we did a lot of traveling, participating in art festivals throughout New England. As an artist, my preferred medium is pottery. I have been a potter for over thirty years.

Q. WOULD YOU PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT INTO WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THE ST JOHN’S RIVER FESTIVAL OF ARTS? R. Since moving to Sanford nineteen years ago, establishing an art festival and community art center have been interests of mine – when Sanford was ready for it. At that time, even though Sanford’s downtown had great bones it needed so many improvements. It took a while and we have seen streetscapes and infrastructure improvements spurred by many dedicated city leaders, their staff and neighborhood volunteers. Improvements continue but the timing was finally right to introduce an art festival. Thankfully, I was and am on a wonderful team of dedicated and art-minded volunteers! It took years of planning to finally realize the inaugural St. John’s River Festival of the Arts back in 2012. Even though the original board that took on this endeavor have moved on to other projects, it would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of this core group. Q. WHY DID YOU PICK SANFORD FOR THIS FESTIVAL? WHAT ARE THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CITY THAT DREW YOU IN? R. This is a simple question. I love Sanford and our community deserves it. The improvements that have been made in the last few years make Sanford a perfect backdrop for an art festival as well as other events. The setting is perfect with a historic downtown, brick streets, enough shops and restaurants to support large crowds, ample parking, sidewalks, alley access, and close to I-4.

Q. WHAT WERE YOUR INITIAL GOALS? R. To establish a premier art festival in Sanford that would continue for years to come and to be recognized as one of the finest art festivals in the South. Q. PLEASE SHARE WITH OUR READERS WHAT "THE ST JOHN’S RIVER FESTIVAL OF ARTS" MEANS TO YOU. R. The festival is a celebration of the arts not just locally but regionally. It promotes creativity, appreciation of the arts and a better understanding of the many different art mediums. On a personal level as a planner I like to refer to the quote “If your dreams do not scare you, they’re probably not big enough.”

Q. WHICH PART OF THE FESTIVAL DO YOU MOST ENJOY: BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER, AND WHY? R. During. With the help of our volunteers, it’s exciting to see downtown Sanford transformed to an art mecca. I particularly like the art-in-action demonstrating artists along with the art guilds who volunteer their time to educate their creative process to the public. P. ¿QUÉ MOMENTO DEL FESTIVAL DISFRUTA MÁS: ¿ANTES, DURANTE O DESPUÉS? ¿POR QUÉ? R. Durante. Q. WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM PLANS FOR THE FESTIVAL? • To continue to grow and establish a reputation that it is one of the finest art festivals. • To expand and increase the “Art-for-Kids” Scholarship program which is a direct beneficiary of funds from the festival. • To establish a community art center that would be open to all. • To increase the number of “Art Patrons” in our community.

TRADITIONAL DESIGN

IN A MODERN TIME A M B E R C LO R E , A S I D

So, you’ve recently bought a historic home, and you’re in love with the thought of having so many generations living there before you. Yet you realize that with all those generations and genres of design, comes out dated décor and furniture. And sometimes, it’s only bits and pieces of different design styles. So, the question is, what do you do with those items? How do you incorporate them into your home to keep them from being hidden in your dusty garage? Well, I have some answers. I know what you’re thinking… does a traditional home have to include traditional and dare I say “antique,” furnishings? The answer is NO! It is absolutely possible to make modern décor fit in a period home. We find that items passed down or inherited are typically the prominent furniture pieces, such as a couch, a couple side tables, or maybe a china cabinet. So, how do we incorporate these pieces into the modern designs we are drawn to? First, start by looking at each traditional piece of furniture and picking out a couple accent colors that could bring all the pieces together. For this “Modern Mixage” design project, we chose a deep sea blue, a soft lime green, and just a pop of red-orange. We brought those colors in with some funky patterned pillows, simple window treatments with added personality, and a rug with lots of movement. This completely transitions the furniture from tucked up traditional to the quirky side of modern. An important element to the space is the wall décor. Here, we hung a large abstract landscape painting that connects all of the accent colors we used in the space. On the other wall, to add just an extra touch of modern, a gallery wall was created. This wall décor option is really trending right now, and one of the best things about it is that it can be incorporated into any design style.

If you think mixing design styles is an impossible task, try to step outside the “traditional” box. As you can see, there are tricks here and there to help you create the exact vibe and look you want in your home. You can liven spaces up with a few unexpected pieces, of course. After all, it is your home, so just have fun with this little project and make sure your personality shines through! RAISING THE AMAZING SERIES

DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE LITTLE MINDS M A R N I E F O R E ST I E R I

You bring a newborn baby home for the first time. The smell, smiles, noise, and excitement make up for the long sleepless nights! And, in a blink of an eye your little one transforms into an active toddler, then a persistent preschooler and ends up becoming a challenging teenager. Some of us enjoy the experience so much that we try it again and again just to realize that it doesn't get easier. Our first time around we welcomed a world conqueror. He was a strategist since he learned how to draw. He had a fascination for maps and really enjoyed designing and conquering imaginary cities. He challenged me to learn many facts that I would quickly forget after reading them the first time. It was a little frustrating to lose every single trivia question to my child. Remember the show “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?” That was our home. But despite his obvious interests, I also wanted him to get involved in other activities, even those he didn't really enjoy, like sports. The second time around I thought I had it all figured out. I was prepared. I had even memorized many state capitals by then, just to be prepared for a trivia quiz! Then I realized this time I was raising a ballerina and to make things more complicated she was a speller and she talked (a lot)! She was athletic, disciplined and persistent. So now I was given the responsibility to raise an athlete and I couldn't even get myself to the gym! Right after learning how to walk she learned how to do pirouettes. She had another type of intelligence. To my surprise, again, I was challenged to learn new skills. And, like my son, I challenged her to take music classes that she didn't really enjoy. But right before she could make me dizzy with her turns, I had an epiphany: Am I trying to fulfill all my unaccomplished dreams of becoming a famous cellist or an athlete through my children? That’s when the fun began! Acknowledging your child’s strengths and interests is the beginning of raising an innovative little mind. In my career as an educator I have discovered that new babies are getting smarter, their interests more sophisticated, the questions are getting harder

22

and they are more tech savvy! The reality is there is no way we will keep up if we don't go back to the basics. We are raising children who will have careers that don't even exist yet, spell words that are not yet in the dictionary and challenge them to solve problems we haven’t even begun to encounter. So, what can we do to raise our little ones to reach their full potential? One good thing about getting older, is that you also become a little wiser, at least in what relates to raising and educating children. In that moment, you realize you don't have to be a speller, a national geographic guru, a sports coach, a dance mom or a math wizard! There is just one thing you have to do to allow them to unleash their creativity: Treat them as competent thinkers, and build their confidence by allowing them to develop their interests!!! And, parents, we need to understand that it's ok to not have all the answers! So, next time your child asks something you can’t answer, learn a very helpful skill that I practice on a regular basis. “I don't know the answer; lets research this further.” When you change the mindset, you become a co-researcher in the learning process and you are helping cultivate an innovative mind. As for my children, they ended up being amazing despite my rookie mistakes and they are a source of great stories in the series, Raising the Amazing!

OUR LAST STANDARD POODLE was with us for 14 years and was the love of our lives. Ellen took losing her very hard and it was almost 7 years before she agreed to look for another one (not a replacement as she knew our poodle couldn’t be replaced). When we began to look for another dog, a health issue arose for Ellen that again postponed our quest. Finally, the stars aligned and 11 months ago, we picked up little Sophie! She recently celebrated her first birthday & is now a teenager. Sometimes a handful, but she has claimed her rightful spot as the “silver queen” of our lives. She has filled the void we didn’t even realize was there. We love you Sophie!

“After more than 100 years the street name was restored to honor the founder of Goldsboro, Mr. William Clark.” OVER 100 YEARS AGO, the street you cross as you enter the township of Goldsboro was named Clark Street, after the founder, William Clark. Mr. Clark also owned property on Clark Street. When the town was infringed upon and its charter was embezzled by Forrest Lake in 1911, the street was renamed Lake Avenue. Gradually, several of the streets were renamed, further erasing the rich history of Goldsboro. Forrest Lake was a local banker, he served as Mayor of Sanford and was elected to the Florida Legislature. The Seminole Herald describes him as a jaunty, confident hustler, and a reprobate who sneers at justice. He was arrested and sentenced to 14 years in prison but only served 3 for mishandling money at the bank.

24

For many years, Goldsboro residents were annoyed by the Lake Avenue sign which was a reminder of past injustice. They held little hope that it would ever be renamed William Clark Avenue, a reminder of the dignity and integrity of the town’s founder. On Thursday February 28, 2013, the long-held wishes of the Goldsboro residents were surprisingly answered. The Lake Avenue sign was taken down and the street was renamed William Clark Avenue. After more than 100 years the street name was restored to honor the founder of Goldsboro, Mr. William Clark. Thank you to Commissioner Dr. Velma Williams and the City of Sanford.
