Dear Friends,
Jennifer Luce
My grandchildren came from the Dominican Republic to visit Sanford so I strived to make them feel right at home during their stay. They had an opportunity to explore local places including Park on Park, Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens, the treetop adventure at Zoom Air Adventure Park, and their favorite, Fort Mellon Park. They enjoyed local restaurants such as the Colonial Room, where Michelle prepared mouthwatering chicken tenders and sides for them. They went to the Tennessee Truffle, where they had a fun time painting the table and eating the best macaroni and cheese, according to my grandson Javier. They tasted delicious homemade tacos and quesadillas from the El Paso Mexican Grill. The ice cream served at Wondermade and Sal's Italian Ice definitely put smiles on their faces. They told me "Nonna (which means grandmother in Italian), this is the place we want to be!" This summer, I want to invite you and your family to experience the greatness of Sanford, Florida. It only takes one visit to determine Sanford is the place to be, just like my family did. I highly encourage you to come explore Sanford and make this season one you will never forget!
John Pierce Jr.

BEERCONOMICS PART 1 BRIAN A. CASEY
BREAKING NEWS: Five new manufacturing businesses to locate in Sanford, employ local workers, bring tourists and give back to our community. The good news is two of the new manufacturing businesses have already opened in downtown Sanford: Wop’s Hops Brewing Company and Sanford Brewing Company. Another one is opening soon: Inner Compass Brewing Company. The final two will open within the next year: Deviant Wolfe Brewing and Wekiva Basin Brewing Co. Before I lose you, let’s get a basic definition out of the way. According to BusinessDictionary.com, manufacturing is the process of converting raw materials, components, or parts into finished goods that meet a customer’s expectations or specifications. So, even though the process of making beer is usually called brewing, it is also generally speaking, a manufacturing process. According to the Brewers Association, craft beer in the United States is a $23.5 billion market that is growing at 6% per year, employs almost 500,000 people per year and as a simple internet search will tell you, is revitalizing, reinventing and popularizing cities and towns all over the country. All right, here is a test. You might have heard of Portland OR, Denver CO, Tampa FL or Ashville NC. All are cities that have been generally well-known for a while, but which have significantly raised their profiles of late because they are destinations for beer tourists. However, have you heard of Grand Rapids MI, Cooperstown NY, New Glarus WI, Decatur GA or Athens OH? Maybe, maybe not. Most craft beer drinkers have, and, by the way, craft beer drinkers have money and will travel. Wop’s Hops Brewing Company was started about two-and-a-half years ago by Greg Piecora and Peter Minelga. It has already expanded once, and is currently expanding as far as it can in its current location. Gregg has been around Sanford for a while and took notice that between physical improvements put in place by local government along with a collection of passionate locals and several successful downtown businesses, all the basics were there for the home of his brewery. “The potential was there but the city didn’t have an idea where it was going,” said Picora. That is where entrepreneurs like Greg step in; they have ideas about where “it” can go. I use the word entrepreneur in every sense of the word. People who decide to open a brewery, brew pub or craft beer bar are 100% serious and savvy business people who believe that they can take their passion, create an outlet for it and then transfer that feeling to other people (in the words of Picora, “If I am having fun, people are going to feel the energy and enjoy it 2
as well.”) all while improving their community and hopefully making a little money as well. So, what is wrong with that? It seems like the same thought process that any retailer, restauranteur or business owner would have. And that is where I am going: craft beer is not only a business, but it is a business that is anchoring and revitalizing cities and towns all over the country. That is beerconomics, using the power of good beer, which is not just the ability to generate money, but also what it contributes to the intangibles that make up a place where people want to be. Intangibles like revitalization and repurposing of old buildings, helping to create walkable neighborhoods, providing local employment and contributing to great community events, thus adding to the pride of place and tapping into the wave of people that want to be hip, not square. Allan Jackson, co-owner of Sanford Brewing Company (SBC) along with Christopher and Robyn Esser and Bo Hallowes, knows this well. The impact of craft beer is not something to look forward to--“it is already here!” Jackson said flatly. Sanford needs to “get on top of this or you are flying behind the airplane.” And SBC has the analytics to back this up; they track traffic, both actual and virtual, and they have seen not only large increases in general traffic, but also increases in traffic from outside of Sanford, outside of Central Florida and even outside of Florida. As Allan put it, sometimes he looks around his brewery and doesn’t know a person, and that is a good thing. Writer James Fallows and his wife Deborah traveled the country for three years working on a project for The Atlantic called “American Futures.” The idea was to delve into small and mid-sized towns and see what makes them tick, or not. In the process, they noticed traits that “distinguished a place where things seemed to work,” Fallows reported. The list was eleven items long that included things like successful public-private partnerships and being home to a college or community college-- very serious elements. Number eleven on the list, and the one they felt was perhaps the most reliable, is “they have craft breweries.” Stay tuned for the next article in the Beerconomics series, and we will explore why this might be. 4TH OF JULY FREEDOM & REFLECTION DANIEL R. LEWIS
On July 4th of this year, The United States of America turns 241 years old. What began as an uncertain experiment, birthed into existence in 1776 by a young and brash collection of rebels, has grown into an enduring dream, strengthened and enriched by the cultural influence of each generation of newcomers, as well as by the youth who morph and redefine our society with each passing era. In this remarkable era spanning nearly two and a half centuries, America has been the worldwide symbol of freedom, equality, and opportunity. Today our nations’ birthday both commemorates the historic moment we set forth ‘self-evident’ truths, and celebrates the promise made long ago to all who would take up the cause to fight for a better way of life. This nation, emerging from the cauldron of revolution, learned early that freedom is neither free nor guaranteed. Before the fireworks and the freedom parties, at which Americans are projected this year to spend $6.77 billion on food, consume 150 million hot dogs, and drink more beer than any other day on our calendar, this nation was a scrappy underdog that persevered in the face of long odds against an overwhelming favorite. It is unlikely indeed that the decision to overthrow the old establishment and carve out our own path could have been predicted to have such a far-reaching impact, but from this fight against long odds our American identity was formed. We are dreamers, fighters, and entrepreneurs. We are a nation that filled our ranks by claiming those who needed us most, and welcomed in the tired, poor, and tempest tossed, those huddled masses who yearned to be free. America stands, as it always has stood, a beacon of hope and refuge for those who seek shelter against the storm of tyranny and oppression. A promise and dream put forth many years ago on a hot, summer day in Philadelphia ushered in a new era of freedom. In our modernity, July 4th means cookouts, parades, fireworks, baseball, apple pie, Americans, and if the calendar falls right, a three-day weekend. But it is much more; July 4th is a time for celebration. Amid this celebration, I hope that you take a moment for reflection. While our nation is eternally faced with trying times, America continues to shape and reform its virtues, challenge and redefine its concept of freedom, and unwaveringly holds forth that initial promise made by our forefathers so long ago. SUMMER FUN
FAMILY & OUTDOORS IN SANFORD C L A U D I A M U N D LO S
As a mom to two wonderful but also hard to tame boys (4 and 6 years old), I am constantly looking for fun outdoor activities so they can run off all their energy. Of course, I try to keep the fun local whenever I can! Here is my go-to list for outdoor fun in Sanford. CENTRAL FLORIDA ZOO & BOTANICAL GARDENS The Sanford Zoo is definitely a place where I can take the boys anytime. We have been passholders since Nicolas was just under 2 years old. Their favorite spots are without a doubt the splash pad (and honestly, with the nice covered patio full of colorful Adirondack chairs, it is a very relaxing place for us mommies too). Ever since the children’s garden with its huge sand box opened, the splash pad got some competition. My boys have played hours in the sand box digging for treasures and they love all the water activities in the garden as well. Last but not least, the playground and petting zoo are two other fun spots we seek out every time we visit the zoo. Lately the boys have also developed an interest in the animals (I was surprised how long it took them, but then again, since there are so many other cool things to do at the zoo it is understandable). Just like Perla’s grandchildren whenever they visit from the Dominican Republic, have to stop each time to watch and sometimes feed the giraffes and of course say see you later to the alligator and huge crocodile before exploring all the snakes in the Herpetarium (did you know that the Zoo hosts the Southeast’s largest collection of venomous snakes and non-venomous reptiles)? We also like to attend the Zoo’s outdoor story time which is free to attend, and best of all there’s always an animal the kids can admire. Not much time to visit the zoo? Just buy some train ride tickets ($2/person) at the main entrance and take the little ones on a ride with the Little Florida Coast Line Train. PLAYGROUNDS The list of playgrounds in Sanford is long. Our favorites are Ft. Mellon Park 4
(600 E First Street) and Park on Park (800 Park Avenue). We love the shade of the beautiful oaks at Park on Park and the fact that the playground is fenced in. Ft. Mellon Park has lots of fun playsets and slides so the boys never get bored. But when they get hot we just walk over to the splash pad for some water fun ($2/child, free on first Friday of the month). Another favorite of ours is Derby Park (2199 Oregon Avenue). At this huge fenced in park the kids even get to ride their bikes, scooters and play cars down the soap box derby slopes. Other Playgrounds in Sanford: • Bentley - Wilson Park, 701 Orange Avenue • Coastline Park, 900 W. 9th Street • McKibbin Park, 1201 W. 25th Street ZOOM AIR (www.zoomair.us) Located just outside the Sanford Zoo is Zoom Air, the fun zip lining adventure. Kids ages 4 and up and at least 36” can participate and explore the world from above for just over $20. Zoo members receive a 10% discount on tickets and there is even an annual pass available. Perla’s grandchildren loved this unique attraction and plan to visit again when they are back in town! SANFORD ROCK HUNTING (& PAINTING) Sanford Rock Hunters have been spotted all over town and it’s a blast for kids. Just imagine the excitement in their eyes when they find another one of these colorful rocks. This fun free activity will get them exploring the town and keep them active - and it might inspire them to get creative and paint their own rocks before hiding them for others to find. Host a Rock Painting Picnic at the park: Bring in some “blank” rocks to color as you sit down on the lawn or one of the pavilions.
MOVIE IN THE SQUARE We look forward to outdoor movie nights every year. The setting couldn’t be more perfect right in the heart of Downtown Sanford on Magnolia Square. Just bring your blankets and lawn chairs along with your favorite drinks and snacks or buy fresh food from one of the local vendors and cozy up under the stars at this free family-friendly event. NATURE HIKE THE BLACK BEAR WILDERNESS (FloridaHikes.com/black-bear-wilderness-walk) I love taking the boys out in the “wild” and am so happy that, unlike mommy, they are not afraid of insects. They do however have respect for reptiles which is great. We love to take the very manageable 2-mile (round trip) hike to an overlook on the St. Johns River. Since you are walking in the shade of the trees it doesn’t even get too hot. Just be sure to wear closed shoes and bug spray. CANOEING AND KAYAKING (KatiesLanding.com) At Katie’s Landing in Sanford you can take the kids out kayaking or canoeing! They even offer horseback riding at Rock Springs Run Reserve and the CrossFlorida Greenway. Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park, 262 Wekiva Park Dr, Sanford, FL 32771 HIDDEN PALMS RANCH My half Colombian rancheros have been around horses since they were babies so for them anything that involves horseback riding is right up their alley. Since we do not have horses here we are very thankful for places like Hidden Palms Ranch. The boys recently participated in a horse experience and loved it. These 1 hour long “mini lessons” all about horses are geared towards kids ages 3 and up and of course also include time on the saddle! PICK FRUITS AND HERBS AT WHITE’S RED HILL GROVES Picking fresh strawberries (or whatever is in season), looking at the chicken and exploring all the goodies at the store is so much fun but the best treat was the vanilla and orange swirl ice cream that we got to eat on the swing under the big oak tree. DOG FOR A DAY We recently had the wonderful experience of spending a day with one of Judy’s pet rescue puppies. Jamie was such a sweet dog and the boys had a blast walking her through downtown Sanford and taking her for lunch to Celery City and the Food Truck Bazaar. This is definitely a win-win activity because your kids get to spend time with a pet and take care of it for a day (or even keep the pet overnight) and the pet gets to go outdoors to explore Sanford! RENT PONTOON BOAT AT THE BOAT TREE MARINA Pontoon boats can be rented at the Boat Tree Marina (4370 Carraway Place) at the Port of Sanford and will make the perfect location for a chilled playdate. Up to 10 people can board the boat. Explore the St. Johns River and wildlife. The boat can be rented for half a day (I’d recommend that with younger kids) or for the very brave, the whole day. FACE OF DOWNTOWN SANFORD
YVETTE COMEAU
THE OWNER OF MAYA BOOKS AND MUSIC NIKKI NAMDAR
I came here with a friend on the back of the motorcycle during a poker run and I asked, ‘What town is this?’ He replied “Sanford.” I came back the very next day. And that’s how Maya Books and Music was established in Sanford 15 years ago. It was created by the blonde-haired, headstrong Yvette Comeau, who came with the vision of a “big city experience in a small town.” “My goal was always to provide a community-oriented bookstore where people came in and did not feel pressured to buy something, where they had the freedom to look around,” she said. She has more than 100,000 books in all subjects. What started as a small shop in the Bishop Block has evolved into a warehouse, every inch covered with paperbacks and hardcovers from women’s studies to science fiction to children’s books. Comeau came here with 30 years of bookstore experience, including 17 years of managing one of the largest rare bookstores in the southeast, and a few thousand personal books and vinyl records to sell. She housed the products in five locations, expanding into what she now calls her favorite and best place. She always wanted to be around books to escape from a difficult childhood, hoping to go into a bigger world beyond her own. She recalled a time in the late 1960’s when her father, while avoiding a traffic accident in Port Washington, New York, noticed a publishing house throwing away stacks of books. “My father stopped, packed his big ‘60s Mercury with as many books as he could and drove 50 miles home with his car loaded,” Comeau said. “I unpacked and looked at every one of them. They were almost all history and I loved going through them. I thought I was in heaven when he brought those books home...and I knew right then I had to be in a world surrounded by books.” If you’ve rarely walked the brick-stone pavement of Magnolia Square, chances are you have assumed the store’s namesake is the owner. But once 6
you stroll through the sanctuary of a thousand stories, you come to know the store has been notable for pets. Customers who have sat in the comfortable chairs and couches would most likely share the space with a cat or dog. Maya the cat, namesake of the store, loved to sit on the edge of armrests and on customers’ laps while they read. Comeau’s best friend and constant assistant of fourteen years was her dog Layla. With black fur and a silver snout, Layla was hard to miss sleeping on the floor when you walked in. Both Maya and Layla have passed away within the last year. Comeau says the hardest part is that people still expect to see them when they walk in. “Everything is the same, but my pets aren’t here. I now fill up my few spare minutes instead of interacting with the animals, playing with them, and I will try to pick up something to read to fill up that time. It’s a blessing and a curse.” In addition to losing her best friends, she fought through the recession and the painful aftermath of Trayvon Martin’s death. She was a single mother in a business that was not easily profitable. Difficulties nearly pushed her to close the doors, but she persevered. She works every day of the week, but enjoys every second of it. “It still doesn’t bother me after all this time. That is what you call true passion. I love what I do. And I mean love,” she said. “I just want my store to be something really great and solid in this town because Sanford deserves what I have to offer. Every great community should have an interesting bookstore. I’m so proud to be that bookstore in this town. That’s what drives me to be the best for Sanford, my chosen community.”

MELLONVILLE
C H R I S T I N E D A LTO N
“The frontier town of Mellonville grew rapidly around the lakefront fort and was bustling with industry by the mid-nineteenth century.” The area south of Lake Monroe was settled in 1836 when the United States Army established a camp along the lakeshore during the Second Seminole War. At the “Battle of Camp Monroe” in 1837, Captain Charles Mellon lost his life. Shortly after his death the army constructed a palisade fort on the site of the battle, naming it “Fort Mellon” in his honor. The frontier town of Mellonville grew rapidly around the lakefront fort and was bustling with industry by the mid-nineteenth century. Steamboats traveled south along the St. Johns River from Jacksonville, bringing goods and services to the river’s southern terminus at Lake Monroe. The community of Mellonville began to flourish after 1840, when 8,000 soldiers arrived to the Central Florida region. Their presence was a result of the government’s objective to increase the population and military presence in the area. They were given six months rations, protection, and 8
land warrants which allowed them to stake a claim on government land. Mellonville Avenue was the main road through the town and was developed as an Army road which began at Lake Monroe and continued south, connecting Fort Mellon with Fort Reid (Sanford), Fort Maitland (Maitland), and Fort Gatlin (Orlando). The road is one of the oldest roads in the state of Florida, and was in use prior to Florida’s creation in 1845. Mellonville became an important location as its Post Office served all of Florida, south of Lake Monroe. Mail arrived in Sanford by boat and was delivered south by way of horse, with trips beginning along the old Army road. In the days before telephone and vehicles, mail was a vital method of communication and Mellonville became the information outpost. By 1845 Mellonville became the seat of Orange County, a status it held until 1856. Mellonville grew in the ensuing decades and by 1876 was incorporated, with its land boundaries extending all the way to 25th Street. The town of Mellonville was dissolved in 1883 when it became part of the city of Sanford.

SANFORD FOODIE HIGHLIGHT
SANFORD RESTAURANTS: VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE L E O N KO N I E C Z N Y
“Sanford is home to so many popular restaurants. Once you experience these places, it’s hard to stop talking about them.” While downtown Sanford boasts a number of unique and wonderful restaurants, good eats are not limited only to downtown. And while there are a number of bars and other drinking establishments that also serve some very fine food, let’s talk about unique eats in restaurants in Sanford, eating establishments where food is their primary business. Of all non-downtown Sanford restaurants, my far-and-away favorite is Chianti’s Pizza and Pasta, almost 5 miles straight west of downtown, near the Mall. Chianti’s has superior service, high quality of food, and is affordable. Their pizza is one of a kind and their evening Italian dinners are superb. Their $7.99 lunch special, 7 days a week, cannot be beat. I’ve taken several family and friends to Chianti’s and they all agree it’s a place they will surely visit again. A second hidden gem, Jimotti’s Restaurant, located about 2 miles south of downtown, features authentic Japanese food including sushi, sashimi, and ramen. With uber-fresh ingredients including fish flown in directly from Japan, those who appreciate fine Japanese cuisine continue to rave about Jimotti’s, and rightly so. Located in an older structure, a former drive-in, Chef Junichi will tell you that this is the type of place you’d find in Japan and frequented by locals. It’s all about the fresh food, and Jimotti’s excels at that. While there’s not much to look at from the outside, just like an oyster, there is a special treat inside. Newly reopened about 3 miles west of downtown is The Smokehouse at 10
Route 46. The whole Route 46 entertainment complex is really something to see and this restaurant boasts delicious smoked meats and appetizers. You can smell the smoke when you arrive and whatever you order is sure to be tender, tasty and full of flavor. This is BBQ at its best, one of the greatest around. I’ve never been disappointed with anything I’ve tasted here. Kind of hidden, but just a few blocks from downtown you might stumble upon Caffe Di Riverwalk. With a beautiful view of Lake Monroe, Caffe Di Riverwalk is a coffee and light breakfast/lunch spot that is quaint and charming. The coffee is fresh, as is the food, and made to order. It is frequented by locals and is never a disappointment. It’s a neat place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Along the beautiful Riverwalk on Lake Monroe, St. John’s River Steak and Seafood is the perfect location to have a good meal and enjoy the view. I’d classify them as more of a supper club with a diverse menu, from burgers and sandwiches to steak and seafood. Try the buffalo shrimp appetizer if you like a bit of heat, or the mouthwatering alligator bites. Nothing beats a good view and an awesome experience! Speaking of the River, there are two gems on the St. John’s River on either side of Lake Monroe. Located to the east of Lake Monroe is Gator’s Riverside Grill. Otters on the River is on the opposite side of Lake Monroe. Both are typical marina fare. You’ll find all sorts of boaters and people here along with excellent food, cold drinks, a wide-ranging menu, enjoyable music, and a guaranteed fun time!
Celebrate
your special occasion with us GREAT QUALITY AND FRESH FOOD MEXICAN FAMILY SPECIAL RECIPIES
Sanford also boasts a few local steakhouses, Cattle Ranch and Colorado’s Prime Steak are both favorites in the city. Colorado’s Prime Steak is well known for their smoked prime rib. Yes, it is as good as it sounds. Cattle Ranch will take you back to the 60’s with their décor, but don’t let that scare you! The food is top notch and you will leave full and satisfied. Not too far away and more than just a steakhouse, Nathaniel’s Steakhouse is a relatively new kid on the block, but provides great fare in a spacious dining room. Try the shrimp n grits, they are to die for! Sanford is home to so many popular restaurants. Once you experience these places, it’s hard to stop talking about them. A few “honorable mentions” are worthy of just that: Ricky’s Chicken, Laspada’s Original Cheesesteaks (the genuine thing), Yabi Sushi, Riverwalk Pizzeria, Pacinos Pizza—just to name a few. If you’re looking for good eats in Sanford, you do not have to go far to find restaurants that are locally owned and staffed, use fresh ingredients, have friendly and welcoming staff, and offer great prices, no matter what you’re in the mood for. From steak and shrimp to BBQ or sushi, Sanford has something for everyone. One of the biggest challenges is having so many enjoyable restaurants to choose from. You certainly can’t go wrong with any choice you make!
Leon Konieczny is a local Central Florida foodie and food blogger who’s been writing about Sanford And Seminole County area “good eats” restaurants for the past 7 years. He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops (small businesses) where high quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally (rarely) eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks—in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.

SANFORD
IS BECOMING THE ECONOMIC & VIBRANT COMMUNITY IN THE REGION BOB TURK
“New development is being proposed, that will create hundreds of new jobs, additional housing, and a variety of restaurants.”
Our City officials adopted a new economic incentive program last year. A tax abatement ordinance was approved to convince Allegiant Airlines to build their high tech simulation training center at the Sanford Airport. Sanford has desired a new hotel downtown for many years. Although the City is not currently looking at new construction, there are two existing buildings that are being considered for complete renovation, which could add approximately 150 boutique hotel rooms to the downtown area. Several new hotels are being planned near the Sanford Airport and Interstate 4.
The last four years has been exceptionally busy for the City of Sanford. Both the Planning and Building Departments have mentioned that economic activity in Sanford is the greatest it’s been in nearly 10 years.
City staff and officials, with feedback from the community, are having discussions regarding the future of the Civic Center located in downtown, to either renovate the existing facility, or to build a new venue. City officials, along with the CRA, will be making that decision later this year.
Have you really seen Sanford lately? New life is being breathed into the area, especially downtown along First Street and Sanford Avenue. New development is being proposed, that will create hundreds of new jobs, additional housing, and a variety of restaurants. First Street and Sanford Avenue has had a face lift with the new streetscape design and construction and several historic buildings have undergone rehabilitation due to the Sanford CRA’s (Community Redevelopment Agency) incentives. Did you know that the Sanford CRA has been extended by Seminole County for another 10 years? The City has been accumulating property in the downtown area for over four years. Located between First Street, Seminole Boulevard, Sanford Avenue and Hood Avenue, there will soon be a major mixeduse development called Heritage Park. (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=0MGIE4_h_7s#action=share) The new development, with commercial space, will have a tremendous economic impact on the City of Sanford.

There are many other exciting projects being planned; development around the Sanford SUNRAIL station, expansion of the Central Florida Zoo, and the completion of the third phase of the RiverWalk, from the hospital to Interstate 4, connecting to the trail system in Volusia County. Sanford is currently experiencing some unplanned economic growth. The City will soon have five craft breweries. A group of local business leaders will lead a business mission to Asheville, N.C. to learn more about the impact that 40 craft breweries have on their community. With so much planned development in downtown, the City will experience a major demand for additional parking spaces. To address this need, the CRA and the City are currently initiating a parking study, with consideration of a public/private partnership to construct a parking garage. As part of Sanford’s economic development strategic plan, the City has identified four major target industries: aviation, medical, transportation and
manufacturing. The City works hard in recruiting new companies and in the retention and expansion of the existing companies. Over the past four years, the City has assisted in the creation and retention of over 1000 jobs. A few of these companies include: American Builders Supply, Hernon Manufacturing, All Pro Freight, Consolidated Labels, Ernest Products, Constant Aviation, Global One, True Choice Telecom, Allegiant Airlines, Jeteezy LLC, and L3 Technologies. The City of Sanford’s Economic Development Department works in partnership with Enterprise Florida, the Orlando Economic Partnership and Seminole County to provide incentives to assist in the creation of new jobs for Sanford residents. Along with great community and regional partnerships, Sanford is becoming a more economically vibrant community. Perception has become reality! P H OTO S B Y REG GARNER

A REAL-LIFE ESCAPE GAME
HAS HIT OUR TOWN! NIKKI NAMDAR
and are now working towards making Escape Artists their life. And making Sanford their home. “We always liked Sanford, the downtown area. So when we saw this, we thought this is a really good spot,” she said. “We used to live in Ohio. We moved to Florida probably years ago. When we first moved here, we were naturally exploring. We happened to come to Sanford, walking around, Alive After 5. Since then we’ve just really liked Sanford. It’s quiet, it’s cute, it has a lot of potential. There’s a lot of people taking chances in Sanford.” Lisa Antonini, an administrative assistant for the City of Sanford, visited the venue with four relatives. Out of a variety of options, they chose the “Horror Motel” for their exciting exploit.
A real-life escape game has hit our town! The Escape Artists is an immersive game that requires you to be locked into a room and struggle to make your way out. In teams of two to eight, players work together to “solve puzzles, decode ciphers, and find secret passages to escape within the 60-minute time limit.” There are two games, the Rest Easy Motel and the Cat Burglar. The owners, Nancy Phillips and Brian Bechtel, are longtime friends with a background in gaming. Bechtel is a builder who enjoys fixing things while Phillips is a designer. They started playing games nearly three years ago, and have played up to 80. “We would go to games and say I wish they would have done it this way. That’s when we started jotting things down, things we personally would like to do if we were to build our own game. And that’s where we started,” Phillips said. We love doing this. We’ve sold these games to other escape game owners a well. So, there are other cat burglars out of state because people really love the games. They started their own escape games here in Sanford a year ago, after years of gaming and helping others build theirs. They both had full-time jobs 14
“You work together as a team and are completely interactive with all of the props provided, and each and every step of the adventure has been completely designed to work in conjunction with facilitating the mystery along even deeper while also providing the necessary clues to solve the mystery and escape the motel,” she said. “While we bounced ideas off of each other as we searched for clues, we had fun, laughed and joked around and all together it was a great way to spend an evening!” Unfortunately they didn’t make it out; they had to be rescued. But it’s all part of the thrill. Located on Oak Avenue, the adventure is close to home. Rather than adding to the I-Drive craziness, they wanted to bring something to downtown in addition to bars and restaurants. It’s not just for game enthusiasts, but also perfect for family, friends, coworkers, and travelers. They switch the games out every six months, so enjoy this one while it lasts. If you love puzzles, mysteries, and brain games, try Escape Artists for your next night out. For more information, visit www.escapeartistssanford.com.

“THE ROBOT” THE NEW HOME OF
IRON ROBOT FILMS
OPENS IN SANFORD JOHN DIDONNA
“New development is being proposed, that will create hundreds of new jobs, additional housing, and a variety of restaurants.” Set back a small way from First Street, right before 1792, is an older structure located at 200 N. Laurel Avenue, dating back 97 years. It has housed a Crate Depot, a transfer facility, and a wood working business – and now this textured and unique building has become “The Robot” - the new home for “Iron Robot Films” and the newest creative endeavor to come to Sanford. Owner Barry D. Kirsch, and his wife and partner Debbie Kirsch are setting out to make their location a local hub of creativity. When location scouting for a proposed film set in the 1880’s, Kirsch was researching Sanford and at the last minute, stuck his head in, and knew “Oh my God, this was that place.” Finding out it was available, Kirsch decided to create a place for his dreams. “The Robot” will be home to art galleries (Including a show of former photo journalist Kirsch’s own work “The Murder City Project”), events, weddings, film and photography projects, meetings, musical nights and more and is available for rental. Beginning soon will be “The Creative Congress” a monthly “particle accelerator for creativity” for artistic types. The space will also herald a welcome return to some very personal work. “Raise your Weapons” a photo project honoring soldiers from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm with Barry’s own unique eye on war and loss will be finished here. “The success of this ultimately rests on the support we get from the community. Every time something happens here, that’s more people eating in the restaurants and staying in the hotels. All of these things put Sanford in a good light to be proud of,” said Kirsch. BOB TURK THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR FOR THE CITY OF SANFORD P E R L A B. C RO S BY
CONOCE A BOB TURK
DIRECTOR DESARROLLO
ECONÓMICO DE LA CIUDAD DE SANFORD
“My past experiences, especially while working with Seminole County, and the relationships I have developed over the past 24 years in the state and the Central Florida region, have helped me become a stronger leader for the City.”
Q. PLEASE GIVE THE READERS SOME INSIGHT INTO YOUR BACKGROUND/HISTORY. R. I am a Florida native, born in Miami but I grew up in Tampa. I attended Lipscomb College in Nashville and graduated from U of F with a degree in Landscape Architecture. I then worked for the FDOT in Tallahassee for a year before moving to Tennessee to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority for 15 years as a Landscape Architect and as a Community and Economic Development Manager. I then became a Chamber of Commerce Director in Georgia and Alabama for eight years. For the last 24 years I have worked for the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission; Some of my achievements include being the first Economic Development Director for Seminole County, the first Project Manager of the National Entrepreneur Center in Orlando, the Director of Business Development Partnership for the Greater Halifax Chamber of Commerce in Daytona Beach, the Economic Development Director for the city of Deland and have been the Economic Development Director for the city of Sanford for the last 4 years. How time flies when you’re having fun!
Q. HAS YOUR PAST LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE IMPACTED YOUR ROLE AS THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR FOR THE CITY OF SANFORD? R. I truly believe that my past experiences, especially while working with Seminole County, and the relationships I have developed over the past 24 years in the State and the Central Florida region, have helped me become a stronger leader for the City. Q. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING FOR THE CITY OF SANFORD? R. The City of Sanford is a great place to work. I have known many of the leaders of Sanford for over 25 years. They have always wanted the best for this city. The current leadership is very supportive of economic development goals and objectives. That’s something you just don’t find in many of the cities our size. Q. WHAT KIND OF INCENTIVES DOES THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICE HAVE FOR OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES? WHAT IS THERE TO OFFER POTENTIAL INVESTORS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN RELOCATING TO THE CITY OF SANFORD? R. Incentives do play a role in attracting new companies and assisting our existing companies to expand in our community. Sometimes they
even help us in the retention of our businesses. Working in partnership with Enterprise Florida, the Orlando Economic Partnership and Seminole County for the past 4 years, we have been able to provide several economic development incentives to assist in the creation of over 1,000 new jobs for our citizens. Hernon Manufacturing, Jeteezy LLC, Constant Aviation, American Builders Supply, and Allegiant Air are just a few examples. We were able to provide a new “Tax Abatement Ordinance” to Allegiant Air for them to be able to select Sanford as their location to build their east coast simulation training center, to create high value, high wage jobs and the facility to train over 1,000 new pilots, flight attendants and mechanics. Q. SANFORD SEEMS TO BE GROWING, WHAT ROLE HAS THE CITY’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLAYED IN THIS REVITALIZATION AND WHERE DO YOU SEE SANFORD WITHIN THE NEXT 10 YEARS? R. Sanford is beginning to experience a period of growth that it has not seen in a long time. The Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency (the CRA) has played a big part of the city’s downtown revitalization efforts. The streetscape projects of First Street and Sanford Avenue helped us attract new businesses and proposed developments to the downtown. Besides the Heritage Park catalyst site project that will transform three city blocks, two additional mixed-use developments will be built on Sanford Avenue and W. 2nd Street within one to two years. The craft brew industry is making a big impact on our downtown M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | C O M M U N I T Y & P E O P L E • 19
in such a short period of time. New housing projects are currently being planned. Several developers are doing their due diligence for possible hotel development in the downtown area and near the airport. With all this activity, and many other projects being discussed and planned, the City of Sanford is reinventing itself. Our leaders are making sure that our history and charm will remain and all future development will be created from our past. If you haven’t really seen Sanford lately and experience what is happening here, then you are going to be very surprised. The Mall area is a story all of its own. The Riverwalk project that will expand all the way around Lake Monroe, the expansions at the Zoo, and the proposed development around the SunRail Station are going to dramatically change the west entrance to the city. Q. IT IS OBVIOUS YOU HAVE ACHIEVED A LOT DURING YOUR WORKING YEARS, WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? R. If I were going to mention what I am most proud of during my career, I 20
would have to mention several: the development of the Martin Marietta missile assembly plant in Troy, Alabama; being the first Economic Development Director for Seminole County, attracting companies to the Heathrow development that created over 10,000 new jobs; and playing a part in the future development of the downtown Sanford catalyst project (Heritage Park). Q. WE KNOW YOUR WIFE HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MOTIVATION TO SUCCEED. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WAYS SHE SUPPORTS YOU AND CONTRIBUTES TO YOUR SUCCESS? R. My wife, Tracy, and I met 21 years ago when she took over my job with the Orlando EDC, when I was hired by Seminole County. We got married several years later. That means she has been working for the EDC for over 21 years now and has become their senior employee (in years not age). Because she is very committed to her job, doing what it takes to get the job done and project completed, Tracy constantly reminds me that I still have goals to accomplish before I can even think about retirement. The Mayor and City Manager keep telling me the same thing!

WAYS
to SURVIVE & THRIVE
IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER
S H E I L A D I PA C E
PRODUCE SHADE
Look at creative ways to produce shade for plants facing full afternoon sun such as mesh cloth, trellis or moving tall potted plants alongside them. Remember that clay pots retain heat as will brick or pavement beneath them. Try plastic pots instead or use potrisers.
PROPER WATER HABITS
Water early in the morning. Afternoon watering evaporates, evening watering causes fungal issues. Observe local water restrictions. Harvesting water via rain barrels is sustainable and a much better water for plants.
RIGHT CROP
Purchase native plants and only grow what works in the summer in Central Florida. Contact the Seminole County Extension office, the local Native Plant Species Society, or pick up one of these two books: Organic Methods for Vegetable Gardening in Florida by Ginny Stibolt or Florida Fruit and Vegetable Gardening by Robert Bowden. Or attend our monthly morning guest speaker series at the garden.
P H OTO B Y R E G G A R N E R
MOSQUITO CONTROL
Look into erecting a bat house, as one bat will eat thousands of mosquitoes each night. Plant Marigolds, Lemongrass, Citronella, Peppermint, Lavender, Basil, Lemon Balm, and Eucalyptus to deter them around your home.
DIRT AND MULCH
Invest in good dirt and organic compost and it will work hard for you. Add organic material into the soil until it almost holds shape in your hand. It should hold water long enough to feed your plant roots, but then be on its way. Mulch is critical for moisture retention during the summer. One of my favorite types of mulch is ground up leaves mixed with pine needles. Avoid mulch with chemicals or dyes.
COMPANION PLANTING
Choose plants that help each other either by repelling the pests that the other attracts, or by feeding the soil the nutrients or PH needed. This will decrease your need for pest control and soil amendments.
DONT FORGET THE POLLINATORS
Every third bite is due to the work of a pollinator, and boy do they need our help. Create a space in your garden for organic, native, pollinator friendly host and nectar plants and they will pollinate your crops for you and bring education and entertainment for your family. Lukas Nursery and Butterfly Encounter in Oviedo is the place to go.
VISIT DAILY TO GET AHEAD OF PROBLEMS
You have to tend to your garden every couple day or you will be overrun with weeds and pests. Just tonight I was adding water to the bird bath and caught two Eastern Lubber Grashoppers about to feast on my Flax Lilly. Had I missed that I would not have any Flax Lilly left this week. For more information go to our website at: www.SanfordCommunityGarden.com or like us on Facebook.
P H OTO B Y R E G G A R N E R
“I stumbled upon gardening about ten years ago when I received a cage full of monarch caterpillars as a birthday present. I quickly realized that if I intended to see them become butterflies I needed to find a lot of organic milkweed fast, and the rest is history. Today I have been managing a butterfly habitat at the community garden for four years, which brings pollinators to increase crops and provides a safe haven for them to land. In 1997, I moved to Sanford after a few years in California, preceded by 25 years in beautiful Oregon. My husband and I travel a lot, but are always happy to return to our home in Sanford, and the community that is fostered here has a lot to do with that.”

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR KITCHEN & KEEP IT THAT WAY A M B E R C LO R E , A S I D
Let’s get honest here. Your kitchen is more than likely the messiest, most cluttered room in your home. It’s the room where you make breakfast each morning, prepare school lunches, cook dinner, and normally have the kids do their homework; no wonder it’s so hard to keep clean! But the key to a cluttered kitchen is simply organization. To help, we have thought of some great ways to organize your kitchen that will keep you sane with your head on straight. First things first, go out and grab clear large containers or jars. Transfer all of your baking ingredients, such as flour, sugar, brown sugar, etc., each in their own container. Not only will this help you when shuffling through all those cardboard boxes to find one item, but it will also make your pantry and cabinets look uniform. Feel free to do this with your cereal and snacks as well. It gives off a very organized look. But don’t forget to label them! We suggest using some reusable chalkboard labels. They’re functional and cute! Typically, there is enough room underneath the last shelf in the pantry to use it as storage, but what would you really want to put on the floor? Instead, fill a large basket with baking pans and accessories and slide it underneath. Then, turn around and place a wire shower caddy on the pantry door to hold all your spices. (Shoe racks and sink caddies work well too.) You want to use every inch of your pantry possible. That’s why we also suggest putting Lazy Susans in the corner of every pantry shelf and any odd cabinet corners. Having the ability to use those hard-to-reach corners will change your kitchen game forever. We also have a couple organization tips that will add to your kitchen’s appearance. We’re sure you’ve noticed the dish soap bottle, the regular soap bottle, and the sponge can sometimes create a mess around the sink. It might get so bad to the point that it’s hiding mildew buildup or rust. To fix that problem, place a cute, decorative cake stand next to the sink with a dry
John Zawacki
dish towel on it and put the soap bottles and sponge on top. Go ahead and get that cute matching tray, because you’ll need some place to keep your mail that just piles up. If you contain it all in one tray, it at least looks like it’s organized and won’t be all over your counters. Our last kitchen organization tip is to hang your mugs. Grab some sturdy hooks from the local hardware store and attach them to either underneath the cabinets so you can show themJohn offZawacki or underneath a shelf inside the cabinet, which will purely just save you room. This always has an adorable look to it, and we always suggest it for kitchens with little cabinet or storage space. Hopefully, these organization tips and tricks will keep your kitchen less cluttered and maybe even give it a nicer appeal. The number one rule to an organized room is to make sure everything has a place where it belongs. Keep that in mind , and you’re golden!

HELPFUL TIPS
to improve SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIES BRIAN AMBROSINI
Working with small businesses such as restaurants, doctor offices, and legal offices, I’ve noticed a pattern regarding social media strategies and would like to share three helpful ways to improve these strategies.
1.
THE BIGGEST REASON WHY SMALL BUSINESSES FAIL USING ONLINE MARKETING IS THEY ONLY STICK TO ONE PLATFORM SUCH AS FACEBOOK.
You would be surprised at the amount of businesses that don’t use Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram. Most of these businesses use Facebook and often times, they don’t even use it properly. Creating a Facebook account does not mean people will automatically go and find your content. It takes being efficient, and most of all it takes consistency which brings us to number two…
BE CONSISTENT. 2. This is extremely important to keep in mind. Many small businesses post content sporadically. And when they do, it is very out of sync or unrelated to the content they have posted previously. Your audience must be familiar with your content and look forward to your company’s posts. Your readers must have a connection with the material that is presented.
LASTLY, YOUR POSTS MUST BRING VALUE. 3. Now I am going to define value in this context. Many small businesses think that “value” means giving away free stuff. Bringing value means bringing
something unique or intriguing to capture your audience’s attention. It doesn’t mean throwing out random stuff and hoping they will like it. These loose attempts to gain traffic on social media may work every now and then but will eventually be noticed by your clients and can damage your brand.
There are many other helpful ways to improve your social media strategies, which I’ll be including in later posts. Remember this is a way to capture your audience and fall in love with your brand. The general rule. If YOU don’t feel good posting it for others to see, don’t post it.

THE GOLDSBORO H E R I TA G E & A R T G A R D E N PA S H A B A K E R
“Fast forward to 2016, the garden has grown by leaps and bounds.” In 2011, after the opening of her second museum, The Francis Oliver Cultural Arts and Goldsboro Welcome Center, Mrs. Francis Oliver started the Goldsboro Heritage & Art Garden in a small corner of the backyard behind the center. Mrs. Oliver noticed that there was a food desert, a lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in the Goldsboro community. To help improve the overall health of Goldsboro, she gave the harvest crops away for free! Fast forward to 2016, the garden has grown by leaps and bounds. Pasha Baker, the New Director & CEO of The Goldsboro West Side Community Historical Association Inc. positioned the garden as a win for the community, a win for the association, and a win for small businesses. The Goldsboro Heritage & Art Garden provides fresh farm-to-table fruits and vegetables for our local downtown Sanford restaurants. The all organic crops contain no pesticide, fertilizer, or hormones, and travels less than a mile to its 28
final destination thus minimizing our carbon footprint. The harvest that is not sold to restaurants to support the association is given away to the community for free. Since the start of the garden, The Seminole County Health Department has noticed a decrease in heart disease and diabetes within the Goldsboro community. We are proud of our partnerships with Tennessee Truffle, Mattie’s Dessert & Eatery, The Smiling Bison, MelloSteves Pnuts, and The Picnic Project. To ensure there are enough fresh fruits and vegetables for the community, we also partnered with local Philanthropist & Contractor Tony Jones. Mrs. Oliver and her green thumb still curates and plants the crops for the Goldsboro Heritage & Art Garden. To learn more about Goldsboro, visit us at www.goldsboromuseum.com or facebook.com/goldsboromuseum.com
