Happy 5th birthday, My Sanford Magazine! As time goes by, it is amazing to look back on all the fun we’ve had. In 2012, Sanford experienced a tragedy that will remain in our hearts. I had lived in the community for less than a year. At that time, some people didn’t even want to mention that they lived in Sanford, much less invest. It was during 2013 that I began to think about applying my professional experience to helping my new community. The first thing was to look for an outlet to represent Sanford in a positive way. My idea took shape as a lifestyle magazine with the sole purpose of showing who we really are and how wonderful this city is. Thus, at the end of 2014, My Sanford Magazine (MySM) was born. After five years showcasing the Sanford lifestyle, more than a million people have read our publications. We have been the exclusive seat back magazine for two airlines and experienced four years of uninterrupted exposure at the airport, in hundreds of doctors, dentists, medical and legal offices, restaurants, bars, houses, chambers of commerce, community centers, in Sanford, Lake Mary and Heathrow. Now, our publication is also featured in locations around Orlando, Deltona, Mount Dora and Debary. As our journey continues, we will continue to grow.
Thank you to those who have supported the magazine since the beginning, including the City of Sanford, Dr. Omar Rivera, Christo's, and all of the advertisers who recognized that this publication represents the quality, respect and confidence that I have in our community. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all my readers. Stay tuned in 2020!

COVER STORY turn as red as the restaurant’s signature rotkohl sweet cabbage. It’s no surprise that she will be taking over the family restaurant in 2020, but don’t think she hasn’t worked hard for this opportunity. From dishwasher to Chief Operating Officer, Christina has been primed for this position throughout her life. When she was 14 years old, her parents, Theo and Linda Hollerbach, purchased the business from a woman who believed that a “German restaurant will not work in this city because Sanford is not ready for it.” In reality, this town was more than ready for the Hollerbach’s. “It’s a choice, not an expectation,” Christina says of her upcoming role. “I did try other things, but I know this is what I love to do… I am proud to be an advocate for the hospitality industry. It has to be a choice. It’s every day for forever. There is no difference between work and Christina. They are the same.”
SOMETHING
Christina and I sat outside of Celery City Craft as she drank a dark ale from Baltimore and tells me the story of her first day as the front-of-house manager. It was a Tuesday lunch shift. They were slammed, the internet went down, they couldn’t process credit cards, and the phones were ringing off the hook. Two of her regulars — who she calls the “Golden Girls” — came to support her during her first supervising shift. When an angry customer screamed in Christina’s face, the Golden Girls, two 60 year old ladies from New Jersey, came to her defense. “And eventually the

shift ended, chairs went up, and I thought, if I could handle today, I could handle anything.” Now, she tries to live her life with no fear. A “healthy balance between Mom and Dad,” she is a risk-taker and a motherly figure. Despite her parents stepping away from the business, they will always be her advisors, and she will always seek their guidance. Her strength comes from working with the executive team for a decade — a group of people she calls her family. What do they call her? Boss lady. This family knows how

to take care of each other without even saying there is anything wrong. Something that was demonstrated in her first “holy crap” moment at Oktoberfest two years ago. The day was gradual, busy but normal. “All of a sudden the weather got nice and then we hit a peak point, where there was a crap ton of people here where I’m like, ‘This isn’t someone else’s event. This is just us. These people are just here for us.’ And I’m like, Oh God.” She laughed. “I hid in my office for a second. These people are all expecting me to make a decision or do something, and it really freaked me out.” But of course, she followed up with, “But it was fine!” She lifted her glasses to wipe her tears, then laughed it off. “It’s scary when you realize it’s 15,000 people because of something you did. It’s crazy.” To destress after moments like this, she spends her days off either alone at home, getting lots of massages at Massage Garage, or at the beach with friends. The phone goes off and Christina goes off. She and her husband, Matthew Simmons, are the proud parents of seven cats and are tied together by their love for kitties, British TV, and good music. “It’s about knowing yourself, your limits, and where that balance lies. My calendar is my best friend in the whole wide world.”
KELLY CLORE WITH KABIKI PHOTOGRAPHY
To prepare for her new role and the restaurant’s journey forward, the space is undergoing major renovations. They are expanding the kitchen and adding a rooftop bar, a project they intend to complete before the new year. Though she has her hands in many projects across our little town, there is no place she’d rather be than the home of gemütlichkeit, which she describes on her website as “evoking cozy familiarity of drinking and dining with close friends.” “I love making people happy. I love that there’s nowhere else they could get these things, and the looks on people’s faces when you’re able to provide that is awesome… I really love gemütlichkeit. I know that's super cheesy,” she said. “I thrive on knowing what I do in this moment gives me instant gratification that is successful. I need to know that what I am doing right now is working.” Growing from seven employees to a hundred employees, the only part she finds frightening is having staff rely on her for income, that the decisions she makes can affect that many households. They say restaurants fail every three years. However, with the increase in sales every year, she tries to lead her life with positivity.
Executive Team 2020: (l-r) Josh Smith, Executive Manager; Patrick Story, Executive Chef; Christina Hollerbach, COO
“There are a lot of things I can't control, some natural disaster, some political things. I just want to make sure that my employees are taken care of, and we can continue providing gemütlichkeit,” she said. She quoted a piece of advice from her father’s mentor, John Wooden. He “talks about how for success you have to have goals, but if you spend too much time trying to reach them instead of focusing on the details, you’re gonna lose that goal. Our main goal is guest experience and gemütlichkeit. Focus on that and it all falls in place,” she said. “It’s Theo’s three rules: exceeding expectations, creating a benefit for all involved, and returning a profit. If all of those are achieved, you're fine.” On her blog, hollerbachsimmons.com, her philosophy is embedded in everything she does. “Work hard, be nice,” she said. “That boils me down. You can get so much accomplished by being kind to people, trying your best, and working hard. That’s all there is to it.” How does she have time for everything she does? Somewhere in between being a dishwasher and CEO, there was a time when Christina wanted to pursue theater at Rollins College. Although she never wanted to be a professional actor, she lives and breathes theater. She credits all of her managerial and life skills to show business. Even if you don’t want to be an actor, you learn valuable lessons, such as public speaking, using tools and stage craft, managing a group of people, adhering to a schedule, and being on time — skills you can apply to any industry. Serving is like performing on a stage, she says.
Now that Theo is stepping down, Christina is stepping towards the spotlight where she was always destined to be. With this promotion comes more distinction and recognition. For her cover story interviews and images, she wishes she could be on her couch at home, wearing high tea garments, teacup in hand, and cats all around her — in typical Christina fashion. Sometimes she wonders what it’s like to be outside of Sanford, beyond the historic architecture, away from the small town shops, and across the 417. But for now, her life is dedicated to improving Celery City. All the work she’s done — from the theater to Sanford MainStreet — circles back to her goal of making Sanford an arts and entertainment destination. She wishes there was more connectivity with the town trolley, but for now she’s added it to her ever-growing agenda. Christina sips her last drop of ale and reveals that she has been named one of Orlando Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2019. She is just one of two Sanfordites and the only person in hospitality to make the list. Her entrance song? Gemütlichkeit, of course. So, is Sanford ready for Christina? We’ve been ready. Take the stage.

THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO INVEST IN SANFORD… Back in the early aughts when the housing market was flying sky high and businesses downtown were beginning to grow, I was positive that little Sanford was finally growing up and coming into her own. I remember thinking, “We have an actual dog bakery, we have arrived.” Turns out it was a bit of a false start, largely due to the economic downturn and subsequent recession, but here we are.

As a real estate professional, I speak with buyers regularly who wish to move here for our great geographic location—convenient to airports, connected to Orlando and beyond by major highways, 40 minutes to the beach, to the parks—it doesn’t get any better than this in Central Florida. We’re a large town that acts like a small town. As the 49th largest city in Florida, according to a 2017 census, we have a population of nearly 60,000 folks. And yet, we still retain a smalltown feel and authenticity. (Go ahead and thank historic preservation for that. I’ll wait.) The fallout from the boom and bust of the 1920’s and the closing of the Navy base caused Sanford to endure a period of blight in the latter part of the 20th century. Like most difficult things we endure, we can be thankful for the lessons it taught us.
“Sanford continues to implement new ways to attract investors that bring jobs and economic benefits to its citizens. This new incentive is already working. Interest from developers is pouring in!” —Sonia Fonseca, MBA, FRA-RA SCRA Executive Director, Economic Development Project Manager Our downtown districts survived because we didn’t have big waves of development in urban renewal projects, which destroyed the heart of many cities in the 1960s and the 1970s. Looking for a new home for your business or industry? Your search is over; our talent pool runneth over. Our convenient location to major highways makes us an attractive location for commuters from neighboring bedroom communities. Our city leaders recently established the Economic & Tourism Development Tax Rebate—an incentive with custom criteria designed to attract solutions for Sanford-specific needs. This rebate actually returns a portion of taxes already paid to assist with cashflow as businesses grow and begin to provide a positive economic impact in Sanford. Now is the time to move in and invest before people discover the little secret we’ve been keeping here. I find myself comforting homebuyers all the time when they discover they’re about 10 years too late to find a “steal.” However, you can still find a beautiful mid-sized home in our historic district for less than $350k. There is more affordable housing booming near the Sanford Airport and larger pool homes in the traditional
suburban neighborhoods of West Sanford still cost less than you would spend in Lake Mary or Longwood and boast the same quality of life. I truly believe we have something special here in Sanford that can’t be found anywhere else in Central Florida. Our community, our friends, our golf carts, a place to offer our children an old-fashioned childhood. Restaurant owners who know your name, making new friends that you feel you’ve known forever. We’re close-knit. We know each other. We’re diverse, innovative, artistic, and tolerant. Living in Sanford, you’ll find yourself surrounded by good restaurants, theater, music, excellent schools and the beauty of our natural environment. All in an unpretentious, authentic atmosphere with a sense of place. All that’s missing is you. Tammy Agnini is a lifelong Sanford resident and local Realtor. She currently serves as the Chairman of the City of Sanford’s Historic Preservation Board.

Mike was consistently able to successfully and efficiently resolve his father's IT issues, and he was quickly made the resident IT guy. Mike relocated to Florida in 2003 and founded his first business, a technology organization called LAN Masters, Inc. It's a company dedicated to cutting through the clutter of information technology on behalf of small businesses, leaving them with an infrastructure that "just works." He still successfully manages LAN Masters to this day. But—as is often true when talking about entrepreneurs—Mike's work wasn't finished. In an effort to do something enjoyable when they aren't at work, most people find a hobby. Mike, on the other hand, decided to start another business, one that was every bit as enjoyable as the first and that people could get just as excited about.

Mike did some research and quickly discovered that there was a void in the peanut butter market—nobody was creating a craft version of peanut butter and the quality of ingredients of many options on the market certainly left a lot to be desired. Mike started making his own peanut butter at home in his spare time. After creating his first flavor, he enjoyed the process so much that he created a second with a wild jungle peanut ordered straight from the Amazon. Flash forward to today, and he's currently at the head of the only company in the United States that makes peanut butter using this unique wild jungle nut. SANFORD! BY MICHAEL HERNANDEZ
Sanford’s Riverwalk Trail along the St. Johns River is currently a 1.8 mile paved trail with amenities such as restrooms, drinking fountains, and plenty of sitting areas to take in the beautiful scenes of nature. Currently, a 2.4 mile expansion of the Riverwalk Trail is in the works. This will reinforce the waterfront as a hub of activity for recreation and exercise. Christopher Smith with the City of Sanford Planning Department explained that a key aspect in designing this expansion is “increasing the walkability score,” which ensures that the road systems and trail systems are increasingly accessible and safe for pedestrians. One of the groups taking advantage of the increased walkability of Sanford’s cityscape is Deviant Wolfe Brewery, which hosts a weekly Wednesday night run starting at 6:00PM. Deviant Wolfe Brewery doesn’t stop at running when it comes to bringing the community together for health; they also offer yoga on Sundays at 10:30AM for a small fee and include 20 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 019
one of their signature Deviant Wolfe craft beers. This class is aptly called “Namaste for Beer Yoga.” The Riverfront Trail and the surrounding areas are also perfect for citizens who prefer to bike to work or for exercise. Matt Steward, owner of Pedal Driven bike shop, saw this potential when he decided to make a personal dream come true and open his own bike shop in Downtown Sanford. Pedal Driven has since hosted events to promote cycling as transportation and become a one stop shop for all things biking. In wanting to build his community and help Sanford grow, Matt partnered with Deviant Wolfe Brewery to host a monthly community ride called Critical Mass to Sanford. Sanford residents have been joined by cyclists from all over Central Florida as they take in the beautiful waterfront views, pass by historic sights, and wave to intrigued onlookers admiring the caravan of cyclists touring through the bustling nightlife of Sanford. The ride ends at Deviant Wolfe Brewery or one of the many other unique, locally owned breweries or foodie destinations in Sanford. The fact that around 100 people of all ages, demographics, careers, and backgrounds, come together for their love of biking is a great demonstration of how these types of events can unite our communities and teach future generations about what it means to “be my neighbor.”

We Need to Make Resolutions
BY DR. MIGUEL A. GONZALEZ, MHS, MS, LMF T
I
t is likely that we know someone, perhaps including ourselves, who has set New Year’s resolutions and wound up getting distracted, disappointed, or derailed from achieving them. Undeterred, and highly motivated, we’ll set new “new year’s resolutions,” yet again.
But, why do we set “New Year’s” resolutions? How do we know or why should we expect that this dawning new year will be any different than the one we are bidding farewell to the real question should be: What makes setting resolutions important? Goals are an important part of life because they serve as motivational forces. Whether to marry and have a family, buy a home, go to college, or plan for our retirement, these plans provide us with a roadmap to follow in life. The more realistic and attainable, the more potential we have to achieve them. Let’s return to our question of “what makes goal setting important.” Although there isn’t a definite, all-encompassing answer, here are a few perspectives from my corner of the world:
1. THEY PUSH US TO GET THINGS DONE.
Things get done at home, at work and elsewhere, because we believe that they are important to attain them.
2. IT’S A CRITICAL FUNCTION OF OUR BRAINS.
As opposed to other animals in the Animal Kingdom, human beings possess a set of abilities called “executive functions.” These cognitive abilities help us plan, organize, set goals and act on them, rather than go through life in a disorganized and unstructured way.
3. GOALS (RESOLUTIONS) ARE LIKE OUR PERSONAL GPS.
Well defined goals serve the function of a full color, high definition global positioning system, guiding our way through life; they provide us with the most effective, economic and direct path to our “destination,” saving us heartache, confusion and waste of personal and material resources.
4. HUMAN BEINGS REALLY NEED TO LIVE MEANINGFUL LIVES.
Goals give meaning to our lives; they give us a sense purpose. It is well known that if we do not have a purpose in our lives, if there is no meaning to our existence, our mental state is in jeopardy. For most of us, having the opportunity to improve our lives and that of others is a great motivator. Martin Luther King once said, and I paraphrase, “a life well lived is a life lived for others.”
5. THE PURSUIT OF GOALS MAKES US FEEL GOOD.

Scientists have discovered that the pursuit of a goal activates the brain’s pleasure centers, regardless of whether we achieve it or not. However, achieving a goal is always more pleasurable than not, and success breeds success. The success of a family, a city, a state, a nation, or just an individual depends on our stated goals, how much one believes in them, our willingness to fully engage, and even how much we are prepared to sacrifice in order to achieve them. FOOD & WINE
INVASION OF THE FOOD TRUCKS BY LEON KONIECZNY
The Sanford Food Truck Fiesta also includes live music, craft beers and drinks, and a street party. On a typical month, more than 20 food trucks participate, presenting all sorts of different cuisine. Depending on the participating food trucks, the selection varies from month to month. Desserts can range from ice cream to churros to cupcakes to cheesecake—the possibilities are nearly endless and always good. Savory dishes can be as simple as a Maine lobster roll, a Cuban sandwich, or a pizza (whole or a slice), while others include pork tacos, Pho, and Korean BBQ —almost anything you can imagine. Then add some sides and starters like kicked-up mac ‘n cheese, BBQ beans, salads and soups—you name it, it’s probably there. There is something for everyone, for every age, for every taste. The only difficulty is deciding what to eat and where—the choices are outstanding. The Sanford Food Truck Fiesta is also pet friendly and, of course, family friendly. Plenty of seating and tables are available, but some imaginative folks even bring their own setups and “camp” out in a nearby parking lot or grassy area. The outdoor music stage at Celery City Craft and indoor music stage at West End keep things rockin’ and the party rolling on into the night even after the official end of the Food Truck Fiesta. 24 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 019
And every few months, there’s a special “Battle of the Food Trucks,” featuring over 40 food trucks battling it out for the title of Best Entrée and Best Dessert. At a recent “Battle of the Food Trucks,” a panel of local and celebrity judges, which by way of disclaimer, included yours truly, sampled about 20 entrée entries and over a dozen dessert entries and selected the winners, who were presented with the Food Truck Fiesta winner’s plaques—and, of course, gave them big bragging rights over their competitors—all in friendly competition. For that battle, congratulations go to The Pass Progressive Cuisine food truck for their 1st place finish with their pork frito dish and to A Lo Cubano Kitchen for the winning dessert, fried cheese, both of which were exceptional. Honorable mention goes to Saigon Sizzle for 2nd place and Cousins Maine Lobster for 3rd in the entrée division, and to Churros & Cream for their 2nd place dessert finish. But trust me, it was a hard choice. There was so much good food that the decision for all the judges was difficult.
Need a bit of a break from the food trucks? Local area restaurants and bars also feel the influx of folks downtown, and there are plenty of other great places to eat and drink just a few steps away from the corner of Palmetto Avenue and 2nd Street, which is at the heart of the Food Truck Fiesta. And if that was not enough, besides the shopping opportunities downtown, the 3rd Saturday of the month also features the Sanford Art Walk from 6PM to 9 PM. Visit the juried show at the Sanford Welcome Center, located on the corner of 1st Street and Palmetto Avenue, to check out the eight artist studios and rotating gallery shows at Gallery on First and Jeanine Taylor Folk
Art, which is right across the street from the Welcome Center. Don’t know where to park? There is plenty of free parking by the Sanford Civic Center, located just over one block northeast of the Sanford Food Truck Fiesta footprint, and another huge and little-known lot just 1 ½ blocks north of the Welcome Center on Palmetto Ave. And one suggestion—arrive early. Food trucks have limited supplies and if an item of theirs becomes wildly popular, you may find it 86-ed by the end of the evening. Of course, there will still be other great choices, believe me. No one goes away hungry! Want to know more? You can keep up with what’s going on for the next invasion of the food trucks by finding and liking “Sanford Food Truck Fiesta” on Facebook—but always the third Saturday of the month. Be sure to check the Facebook page for the next Battle of the Food Trucks, too.

BESOCIAL n THE TASTE OF SANFORD
24 CRAFT TAPS • SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY
BY KIM FULFORD
The Greater Sanford Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted hundreds of attendees at the alwayspopular Taste of Sanford. Held each year since 2006, the event was celebrated on October 28, 2019 from 5:30 pm–8:30 pm at the Sanford Civic Center on Seminole Boulevard with the splendid view and ambiance of beautiful Lake Monroe. The Taste of Sanford featured more than twenty-five restaurants providing a wide variety of food, beverages and sweets. This is the ultimate opportunity for Sanford's diverse restaurants to showcase great samples of local fare. Live entertainment was provided by a very talented local musician, Iesha Marie, who played a variety of favorites through the evening. A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to Love Missions/Palate Coffee Brewery, a volunteer-staffed coffee shop located in historical downtown Sanford. All profits are dedicated to the abolishment of human trafficking through Love Missions. For more information, visit lovemissions.net.

Love Stories and Love Songs
I wanted to know how this year’s couples met, about their first dates, the proposals, the weddings, their secrets to having a lasting relationship, and, yes, their special love song. I received 34 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 019
the answers to my questions in emails of various styles; an eloquent essay, numbered bullet points, question then answer, and answers from the husband and wife separately. I’m so happy to find out that others have quirky stories to tell! Their stories put a big smile on my face, and I hope you will love them as much as I do. These days, Gabe and Karen Adam, who met in law school, are busy being parents and running The Adam Law Firm in Sanford. Gabe had been invited to dinner by a couple of friends to meet a new girl, who was not Karen. Despite immediately becoming interested in Karen, she was not too keen on him. Karen says she was sure they would become friends, and Gabe says he knew that he didn’t want to be put into the ‘friend zone.’ He invited Karen over to watch a movie of her choice. Her neighbor suggested “Halloween” because a scary movie would make them sit closer together. Neither of them is sure if that was
their first date, but they both say the Halloween party a few days later is where it all began. Gabe bought Karen’s ring the day he passed the bar exam. During his swearing in ceremony, he told the judge he had something he wanted to say, dropped down on one knee, and proposed to Karen, who had driven from Virginia to Orlando to be a part of his proud moment. Almost exactly a year later in 2007, they were married at a church in Lynchburg, Virginia. There were some great mishaps during their wedding and reception. Karen’s grandmother had chosen a candle lighting song that ‘went on FOREVER.’ Everyone in the church found it a bit awkward—except for grandma! The happy couple just stood there looking at each other and watching Karen scrape off the dried wax she’d accidentally poured on her hand. She also managed to spill red sauce on her gown, staining the front of it early into the reception. A guest

ast year, I was asked to write an article about love. A year later, I still have much to ponder about the subject. So, when I was asked to write a follow-up piece, I grabbed the first of many cups of coffee and procrastinated. To gather motivation, I began by reading T.S. Eliot’s Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, which has nothing to do with any song in any time, of course, and that stream of consciousness led me to To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell. But somehow a farcical lamentation and a metaphysical masterpiece were not exactly the inspiration I needed, so I took a more pragmatic approach and came up with a list of questions, which I posed to a group of fun couples obliging enough to answer them.

stepped on the poor dress, breaking the bustle causing her to have to drape it over her arm to dance. And if that wasn’t enough the pastor wanted to wait until the reception to sign their marriage license, which never made it from the church to the reception. Fearing the paper had been thrown into the trash, Karen’s dad and his friends went dumpster diving to find it. The license was found, but not in the dumpster. Karen says the secret to a happy marriage is to remember the love and devotion that caused you to choose one another to be your partner and remember that when times are bad. Gabe corroborates and adds that having a good sense of humor and total commitment to one another help to manage tough times and make the good times amazing. Karen is keeping their special song a secret. Darn. Jeb and Tammy Agnini live in Sanford’s Historic District with their two daughters. Both have always had a love of old houses. Jeb’s business, Palmetto Restorations, specializes in historic construction and Tammy is a local real estate agent. They met at a mutual friend’s wedding. Jeb introduced himself by saying, “Jeb, like the governor, only with more power.” And, folks, Tammy still went out with him. Later, much later, she was nursing a bruised heart from a previous relationship and shared many long phone conversations with Jeb. They discovered their mutual love for ‘anything old Florida’, books, running, dogs, and Rainbow flip flops. She actually canceled their first date because she was afraid of dating again so soon. Tammy finally agreed to go out on a group date, but only had eyes for Jeb. During a weekend in New Smyrna, Jeb had planned to propose at dinner and had been acting strangely all day. As Tammy was getting dressed, he couldn’t wait any longer and dropped down on one knee and proposed. In the bathroom. They married on a blustery, cold January morning in 2011. Jeb’s uncle, who was a wellknown theology professor and minister, came from Chicago to officiate the ceremony. During the ceremony, Uncle Mark announced that he would be reading from the Gospel of Luke, and Jeb’s brother, Luke, stepped forward. Everyone laughed and Uncle Mark informed him that he meant the BIBLICAL LUKE, and Jeb’s brother gained a new nickname. Tammy and Jeb both
adored Uncle Mark Agnini. He passed away soon after the wedding, which made his presence there even more meaningful. Jeb’s grandparents were married for over 60 years, and as Tammy says, “set the standard for their “ultimate #relationshipgoals.” One day during their traditional 4 o’clock martini, 90-year-old Nana raised her glass to Tammy and said “Always keep your sense of humor, because life can get pretty sh**ty!” That advice has served them well over the years. “Better Together” by Jack Johnson is what Jeb and Tammy consider their special song. It was on a CD mix Jeb created. Tammy says their alternate love song is anything by Widespread Panic. If you ever see a more stylish couple around town than Vernon and Gail McQueen, please let me know. These two really know how to have fun while doing good things for their community. They met through a long process involving a good friend of Gail’s that thought they would make a great couple. They spoke on the phone but were unable to meet in person due to their busy schedules. Eventually, the two stopped communicating. Five years later, they finally met in person at an MLK Banquet and didn’t waste any time before their first real date at Bennigan’s. Gail still remembers what Vernon was wearing for their date. I’m calling this love at actual first sight! Vernon planned to propose on Christmas Day but found he couldn’t wait. While Gail was sitting on the floor wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve, Vernon dropped down on one knee, presented her with her ring and proposed. They were married in a beautiful ceremony in 2002 at Allen Chapel AME Church. Always ahead of the game, Gail had a plan for getting one of her notoriously late bridesmaids to the church on time. She asked everyone to be there four hours prior to the ceremony and told them only three people were needed there to proceed: the minister, bride and the groom. The wedding took place right on time. Vernon and Gail believe that a lasting relationship is based on trust and willingness to meet your mate halfway. Their special song, which was performed at their wedding, is “I Believe in You and Me” by Whitney Houston. Okay, Vernon and Gail, you make me believe that fairy tales really do come true.
I always call Zach and Kim Waters the “Dynamic Duo.” They are involved in various Sanford organizations, raise their two young children, and maintain very demanding jobs. Zach is a high school teacher and coach and Kim is a physical therapist. They met at Gannon University where they both played sports. All of the athletes hung out with the same crowd, so they met at a mutual friend’s house one night. They knew each other for about a year before their first date at Smokey Bones. Kim says it’s really odd because they almost never go to chain restaurants. Zach proposed to Kim after driving her to New Smyrna Beach while she was visiting him on a school break. He asked a random couple who were out walking on the beach to take a picture of him proposing. It turned out they didn’t speak English and didn’t understand what he was asking, so there are no pictures from that day. Kim told Zach yes, but not until she finished her doctorate, which took just a few more years. They had an intimate beach wedding near St. Pete with about thirty-five close friends and family present. Sounds so simple and perfect right? Well, it turns out that Kim and her dad left the car keys in the hotel room and didn’t realize it until they got to the car to go to the ceremony. Of course, the hotel room was locked, and they had to get staff to open the door. Kim was late for her own wedding! Zach and Kim have been together for thirteen years and married for six. Their best advice is to communicate well, which is essential now that they have two children. They know their relationship is the foundation of their family, and it’s important to take time for just the two of them. Their special song is Brother Iz Kamakawiwo’ole’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” When they hear it, they always think of their wedding day. I’m in love with these stories and see endless happiness for the couples who took time to write to me. I’ve learned a lot from them. As for Elliot and Marvel’s poetry—hmmm. Well, I do identify with these two lines; Had we but world enough and time. –Andrew Marvel I have measured out my life in coffee spoons. –T.S Elliot n
