How to become vested SEIU 775 Benefit Group’s Secure Retirement Plan is the first of its kind in the nation for homecare workers.

To become vested in the caregiver retirement plan, you must work at least 300 hours per plan year (March to February) for three years with no permanent break in service. Only hours worked on and after March 1, 2016, for employers covered by terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement are included.

Holiday

With the holidays under way, it can be easy to lose track of your needs. Here are a few ideas to center your emotional well-being during this busy season: Try handmade gift-making. Rushing to buy gifts can become expensive and create anxiety about buying the right item. Save money and add a personal touch by making handmade gifts or baked goods. Pinterest.com is a great source for finding simple, affordable craft tutorials that you can make in batches and customize for your friends and family. Or try writing a thoughtful letter to share your gratitude.

Start a new tradition. If you’re caring for a client with dementia, honoring family traditions can be a great way to connect to the holidays. But it’s OK to scale down or try a new, simple tradition. Attend a free holiday concert. Take a drive to look at neighborhood decorations. Or try making a holiday craft or seasonal food item.

Take time for yourself. Don’t feel bad if you need to take a few minutes for yourself during group gatherings. Pay attention to your own needs and feelings. Learning a few simple mindfulness exercises can help in these moments.

Find support if you need it. The holidays can trigger depression, especially if you are coping with the loss of a loved one. You are not alone! Read stories of caregivers managing their depression on page 24 and resources to find help on page 28.

Healthy Holidays

Harvest Pumpkin Soup Diabetes-friendly recipe - Serves 5

Pumpkin is lower in carbohydrates than other starchy vegetables and is high in vitamin A and fiber. Serve with a large salad for a complete meal.

Ingredients: 2 teaspoons canola oil 1 onion, diced 1 carrot, diced 2 celery stalks, diced 32 oz reduced-sodium, fat-free chicken broth 1 (15-oz) can pumpkin puree ¼ teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon chili powder ½ teaspoon ground black pepper Instructions: Heat the oil in a large soup pot over mediumhigh heat. Add the onion, carrots, and celery and sauté for 5 minutes or until clear.

Add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

After the soup has cooled, transfer it to a blender and blend until smooth. You can also use an immersion blender in the pot and blend until smooth.

It’s easy to make it gluten-free. Purchase glutenfree chicken broth and verify all other ingredients are gluten-free.

Nutrition Facts: Serving size: about 1 cup. 80 calories.

Jeremy has always had sensitive hearing. We recently purchased earphones to help reduce noise levels and increase his comfort. While earphones are not always necessary, he has a choice when sounds seem to bother him. So far, when we go to strange places, or even at home when he appears affected by the surrounding noises, earphones are a beneficial option. He totally enjoys having them. The overall effect is reducing agitation caused by surrounding noises and they help him remain calm. Now, when a friend calls, I can talk on Over-Ear headphones–

Limitless Love Q&A with grandparent and caregiver Nancy Cook

s a home care aide for her 35-yearold grandson Paul, Nancy Cook has

Thirty years ago, she had just started running her own restaurant in Vancouver, Canada, when she got a frantic call from her daughter, Sandra. She was experiencing severe abuse from her husband and also having problems stemming from her Type 1 Brittle Diabetes. Nancy had to make a quick decision.

Nancy left her restaurant and flew to Texas to care for Sandra and Paul. Not long after, Nancy’s daughter passed away.

Her grief was so profound, she says that without Paul she might not have survived.

Home Care Aide Definitions Home Care Aide (HCA)

Provides care to a consumer living in his or her home. Employed by a private, Medicaid homecare agency or DSHS.

HCA Credentialed

A worker who has successfully passed a test and been credentialed by the Department of Health as a Home Care Aide.

Non-HCA Credentialed

This is an HCA with a current healthcare credential, such as a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC).

Agency Provider (AP)

Home Care Aide (HCA) employed by a private, Medicaid homecare agency.

Individual Provider (IP)

Home Care Aide (HCA) whose employer of record is DSHS.

Standard HCA

Home Care Aide who does not work with their own parent or child. Works more than 20 hours a month or has more than one consumer.

Parent Individual Provider (HCS/AAA)

This is an IP who provides care to his/her own adult child and is contracted through Home and Community Services (HCS) and/or an Area Agency on Aging (AAA). This is often referred to as a non-DDD Parent Provider.

Parent DD Individual Provider (DDA)

This is an IP who provides care to his/her own adult child with a developmental disability and is contracted through the Developmental Disability Administration.

Limited Service Provider

This is any IP who provides care 20 hours a month or less for one consumer.

Adult Child Individual Provider

An adult child providing care for his/her biological, step, or adoptive parent.

Respite (DDA)

This is an IP that provides DDA Respite services at 300 hours or less in a calendar year.

Chương trình chăm sóc sức khỏe Nhóm Phúc Lợi SEIU 775 dành riêng cho chăm sóc viên Các chăm sóc viên đã làm việc 80 giờ một tháng trong ít nhất 2 tháng liên tục sẽ đủ điều kiện tham gia chương trình bảo hiểm chăm sóc sức khỏe dành riêng thông qua Nhóm Phúc Lợi SEIU 775.

Với $25 một tháng, chương trình chăm sóc sức khỏe này cung cấp gói bảo hiểm chất lượng cao cho các quyền lợi y tế, thuốc kê toa, nhãn khoa, sức khỏe tâm thần và nha khoa.

Các khóa học khác bao gồm: Phòng Ngừa Tai Nạn (1 Giờ) Các cách để phòng ngừa ba loại tai nạn tại nhà phổ biến nhất: ngã, bỏng và ngộ độc.
