By Patricia Muhammad Thornwood High School recently hosted its annual Thunderbirds Trails open house as a means to recruit and pre-register an elite group of local eight graders who expressed interest in enrolling in the high school for the upcoming year. The event attracted more than 143 families, who assembled in the school’s cafeteria to complete residency verification for students who will be among the 2018-19 student body. Throughout the evening, Thornwood’s award-winning Marching Band played in the front lobby as the Thornwood Dance Team executed graceful, dance routines, to the music. Within minutes of the doors opening, the lobby was flooded with guests and families who gathered to see the showstopping entertainment. Don Holmes, Assistant Principal at Thornwood, said the purpose of the event was to give incoming students an opportunity to complete residency verification early, as well as check out the academic and athletic offerings at the school. “But most importantly,” he said, “We want them to meet some of the awesome staff that they will be working with next year.” Junior high schools that participated
for the ’18-19 school year,” Holmes said. “I am a firm believer that opportunity is present here at Thornwood High School, as long as our students and parents work with us to access those opportunities so that we can help our students be successful as possible. That is what tonight is all about.” In their Thunderbirds Trails Welcome Packet, eight graders were introduced to the school’s administrators, the bell schedule, attendance procedures, dress code, ID cards, hallway conduct, the school district calendar, among others. A selection of clubs the eighth graders could pick from included Anime, Band, Chess, Drama, HOLA, Jazz, National Honors Society, Special Olympics, Yearbook, and more. Representatives of a number of clubs were on hand to sign students up during the open house. The Welcome Package summed up the goal of the event: “We believe that all students can achieve high standards when education is a partnership between the teacher, the parent/guardian, and the students. Thornwood maintains high expectations, while providing a positive, supportive environment that develops academically and socially competent young adults.”
in the open house included McKinley Junior High (South Holland), Obama Junior High (Hazel Crest), Jesse White Learning Academy (Hazel Crest), Memorial Junior High (Lansing), Wolcott Junior High (Thornton), among others. McKinley Junior High eight grader Gregory Hardaway, II and his mom were fifth in line at the registration table. Hardaway’s mom said, “I’m here to get more information about what it takes to get him enrolled—I think this is a good school.” According to Marice Walls, Assistant to Don Holmes, the annual Freshmen Incoming Night is an annual tradition founded by Thornwood more than 40 years ago. The open house initiative gives incoming students an opportunity to get a feel for what the school offers in terms of its creative side, such as club participation. “They will also have an opportunity to speak to Academic Counselors.” The Athletic Department was on hand to meet with interested students about available sports activities, and recruit students for track and field, soccer, cheerleading, and other school sports. “We want to sign those kids up so they can have something to look forward to

The Arthritis Foundation would like to offer their sincere thank you to Representative Jan Schakowsky and her Legislative Assistant Calli Shapiro, and to Representative Robin Kelly and her Health Policy Advisor Mia Keeys for supporting Arthritis Research. Dr. Rowland Chang, National Chair for the Arthritis Foundation and Cindy Copenhaver, Illinois Advocacy Chair, met with Representative Schakowsky on March 13 in Washington DC, securing support for Arthritis Research at the Department of Defense and for Arthritis Public Health Programs/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Representative Schakowsky is already a member of the Arthritis Caucus. The same day, Dr. Chang and Cindy Copenhaver also met with Representative Robin Kelly and her Health Policy Advisor Mia Keeys in regard to supporting Arthritis Research at the Department of Defense. Representative Kelly has already signed on to Restoring the Patient’s Voice Act (H.R.2077). This Bill is a simple and straightforward way to fix the step therapy process also known as “fail first.” Step therapy legislation has already been enacted in Illinois. Of the 54 million people diagnosed with arthritis in the US, 2.3 million adults and 13,000 children live in Illinois. Please visit www.arthritis.org for additional information.

A Day Without Men ARLO KALLEMEYN These days it’s a popular pastime to imagine life without a certain segment of the population. I know some people who say that a day without dogs and cats would leave a huge hole in their lives. Sure, living a day without our furry friends would be tough to get through, but how about living a day without another very super important part of our lives. Imagine for a moment A Day Without Men. Now I agree that a day without men would make it much easier for anyone driving on our highways. After all, without men, who would use the shoulder as a passing lane? The shoulder would be completely free and unobstructed—just the way it was intended. That’s a waste of good pavement in the minds of quite a few men that I know. Since we are speaking of driving skills—let’s talk about red light cameras. For some reason that yellow light sure looks green to a lot of us guys. Without men, the red-light camera industry would go out of business. Ticket revenue would dry up and instead of multiplying like rabbits, those annoying cameras would be a distant memory—just like 8 track tapes. I had trouble thinking of more examples of what A Day Without Men would look like, but my daughter came to the rescue. She didn’t have any problem rattling off several—right off the top of her head. She reminded me that without men, there would never be an empty toilet paper roll sitting politely in the bathroom—just waiting for the next person to discover. Or there wouldn’t be an empty milk carton sitting in the fridge, after the man of the house drank out of it to save the work of putting his glass in the sink. You never know—someone may just need a teaspoon of milk, and there it will be—nice and cold too. In my opinion a day without men would be so utterly boring. After all, who would offer random tidbits of trivia and unsolicited advice in the course of polite conversation? Who would dominate conversation at the water cooler with statistics of their favorite sports team? Even better—their fantasy team. For those who don’t know, fantasy sports teams don’t even really exist, but still need plenty of research and in-depth analytical skills. Speaking of skills. Steve Harvey, the brilliant game show host and TV personality once said, “My kids told me that I don’t have any skills like a doctor, lawyer or accountant. I told them if they wanted to see one of my skills just look in the refrigerator!” I hope you enjoyed this column and thinking about what A Day Without Men would look like. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of appreciating the people in our lives.
Lost & Found
The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) continues to partner with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to share the top tax filing season concerns referred to as the “IRS Dirty Dozen” tax scams for 2018. The fourth scam in the 12-part series is tax preparer fraud. Tax preparer fraud occurs when deceitful tax preparers are looking to make a quick buck off of honest individuals seeking tax assistance. This fraud may include inflated charges, advising clients to take credits or deductions they aren’t entitled to or ghost preparation. “Tax preparers play a vital role in submitting tax returns, with over half of U.S. taxpayers utilizing these services,” said Indiana DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp. “While the majority of tax professionals provide honest, highquality service, individuals should be aware of dishonest preparers looking to collect high fees for fraudulent filings.” Inflated charges are usually due to tax preparers basing their fees on a percentage of a client’s refund. These preparers often advertise bigger refunds than their competition. Only give tax documents or personal information to a preparer once they have been selected to file your taxes; do not provide this information when asking about fees or services. Criminal tax preparers have improperly filed a tax return without taxpayer permission using this information. A good tax preparer will ask questions

to determine the client’s total income, deductions and tax credits. In addition, they should ask for records and receipts for any credit or deduction claimed. Claiming deductions or credits the taxpayer isn’t qualified for, often leads back to the preparer collecting more fees based on the client’s refund. A ghost preparer collects a fee from the client to prepare a return, but does not sign the return. This return appears to be self-prepared. A legitimate tax preparer will sign the return and provide their Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS. These ghost preparers don’t want to be responsible for any consequences of an incorrect return, which is often due to false reporting of income or expenses. The taxpayer is then responsible for any audit. “Selecting the right tax preparer who is trusted and credentialed should be critically important to taxpayers because the taxpayer is ultimately who is responsible for what is submitted to DOR and the IRS,” said Commissioner Krupp. DOR and the IRS offer several tips for individuals to consider when choosing a tax preparer: Avoid fly-by-night tax preparers. Make sure the preparer you select will be available well after the return is filed. In the event that questions come up about the return, a reputable tax preparer should be available to assist. Check on tax preparer’s qualifications.
Small automotive engine parts cleaner. 532-8337 Somewhat current resident road atlas. 532-8337 Partial pieces of 1/2” to 3/4” plywood. 708-532-8337
The tax preparer must have an IRS PTIN to charge for preparing tax returns. The IRS also has a Directory or Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications that can be accessed on their website at https://irs. treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf. Check the preparer’s history. The Better Business Bureau, State Board of Accountancy, and State Bar Association are great options to access the tax preparer’s history. Never sign a blank return. Any tax preparer that asks a client to sign a return before it is complete, should be avoided. Review your return to ensure everything is correct and that the refund goes directly to you, not the preparer. Reviewing the routing and bank account number can help ensure your refund is going to the correct account. Report corrupt tax preparers to the IRS or your state Department of Revenue. • IRS – Use Form 14157, Complaint: Tax Return Preparer and Form 14157-A, Return Preparer Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit to report to the IRS. Forms can be found at www.irs.gov. • Illinois DOR – http://tax.illinois.gov/ fraud/ • Indiana DOR – Report any fraudulent activity online at https://www.in.gov/ dor/4792.htm or email investigations@ dor.in.gov. BOB KRYGSHELD your financial advisor is important —after all, you may be working with this person for decades—and he or she likely will be involved with many of your most personal decisions. Consequently, you’ll want to work with someone you connect with on an individual level, as well as a professional one. So, if an advisor seems to share your values and appears to have good rapport with you, it could be a positive sign for the future. • “How will we communicate—and how often?” If you’re interviewing candidates, ask them how often they will meet with you in person. At a minimum, an advisor should see you once a year to review your progress and suggest changes. Will they also call or e-mail you with suggestions throughout the year? Are you free to contact them whenever you like? Will you get a real, live person every time you call? Will they send out newsletters or other communications to update you on changes in the investment world? • “How do you get compensated?” Some financial advisors work on a fee basis, some on commissions, and some use a combination of both. Find out how your advisor will be compensated, when you’ll need to make payments and how much you’ll be expected to pay. By asking the right questions, you should get a good sense of whether a particular advisor is right for you. And since this likely will be one of the most important professional relationships you have, you’ll want a good feeling about it, right from the beginning.

What kind of lifestyle do you hope to have in retirement? Do you have a strategy to get there? If you don’t have confidence in your plan, it may be time to engage a financial professional. But how do you choose the one who’s right for you? These days, you have more options than ever— including so-called roboadvisors. Robo-advisors typically use algorithms to assemble investment portfolios, with little to no human supervision, after customers answer questions online. Generally, they are fairly cheap, and their recommendations are usually based on sound investment principles such as diversification. However, you should determine if an algorithm can address your needs as well as a human can— someone who actually becomes familiar with your life and all aspects of your financial situation. Furthermore, a roboadvisor can’t really handle the new wrinkles that will inevitably pop up, such as when you change jobs, and you’d like to know what to do with your 401(k) from your previous employer— leave the money in that employer’s plan, transfer the account to the new employer’s plan or roll it over to an IRA. So, if you decide to work with a financial professional, what should you look for from this person? Here are a few questions you might want to ask: • “Who is your typical client?” By asking this question, you may get a sense of whether a particular financial advisor has experience working with people in your financial situation and with goals similar to yours. • “What’s important to you?” The quality of your relationship with

DOM? MIKE BUDER to know the total DOM of a home before they make an offer. Why? Because they are trying to gauge the motivations of a seller and “how desperate” a seller might be by the number of days on market. Recently I listed a home that went under contract after only six days. Although delighted, this caught my seller a little bit by surprise especially since another home on her block had been on the market for a long time without receiving an offer. I explained to her that her home sale was different. All the conditions including pricing, condition of the home, timing of the market and the marketing itself, were right. Then I pointed out the fact that the shorter time on the market also meant relief from the expenses for upkeep, maintenance and property taxes. My seller was very happy as she was looking forward to her quick closing with renewed confidence. What is DOM in real estate and what does it mean? Sooner or later prospective buyers and sellers come across the abbreviation DOM and ask what is hiding behind this real estate jargon. The short answer is: DOM stands for days on the market and indicates the number of days a property has been on the market for sale. The DOM of a listing will start accumulating from the day it is entered in the multiple listing service (MLS) and it will continue to add up until the property goes under contract. There are a lot of properties on the market that just sit and sit and sit…and consequently accumulate quite a number of DOM. Then there are those properties that as soon as they are listed, get showings and offers…and the DOM are short. How useful is days on the market data? The DOM is a very useful tool to demonstrate to sellers the disadvantage of overpricing. By simply looking at the listing history of a property, it will often provide a case that the home could have sold sooner if it had been priced right. Also what about all those price reductions before it finally got an offer? Could it even have sold for a higher price if the initial list price had been in line with the market right from the beginning? Many buyers today want

As the spring fishing season approaches, the Indiana Division of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages anglers to give Indiana muskie fishing a try. “Indiana has some of the best muskie fishing in the Midwest,” said Jed Pearson, a DNR fisheries biologist who manages the state’s muskie program. “Lake Webster, the Barbee lakes and Lake Tippecanoe in northeast Indiana’s Kosciusko County are especially good.” Local fishing guides are available for hire for anglers who do not have a boat or who want expert help to get started. The lakes in Indiana’s muskie program cover 2,700 surface acres, and many have been stocked each year for more than 20 years. According to Pearson, it’s common for anglers to hook a muskie on every fishing trip. Long thought to be elusive, muskies bite on a variety of lures, many of which are typically used by bass anglers. Casting large plugs or trolling spoonbaits along submersed weed beds are the most productive methods. Muskies have sharp teeth that easily cut regular fishing line. So, attach your lures to a steel leader to keep the fish from breaking away. A large landing net is handy to lift the fish and safely handle it. The minimum size limit to keep a muskie in Indiana is 36 inches, but muskies taken at Lake Webster and the adjacent Backwater Area must be a minimum of 44 inches to keep.
Even so, most muskie anglers release the fish they catch. For first-time muskie fishing, Pearson suggests heading to Webster. It has the highest density of muskies. Other muskie lakes in northeast Indiana include Everett in Allen County, Loon in Whitley County, and Skinner in Noble County. Another top muskie water is Bruce Lake, about 15 miles west of Rochester in Fulton County. Although smaller, at 245 acres, it too has a dense muskie population, with some fish measuring more than 50 inches long. “Not as many anglers fish for muskies at Bruce Lake,” Pearson said. “If more would try it, we think they’d be surprised.” Muskie fishing is also available in southern and central Indiana. Top waters include Brookville Lake northwest of Cincinnati and Bass Lake near Sullivan. Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis is also stocked with muskies, as are two pits southeast of Indianapolis and two near Evansville. Use the fish stocking database at wildlife. IN.gov/5457.htm to search for muskie waters near you. An Indiana resident fishing license is $17 per year. Non-Indiana residents can purchase a one-day fishing license for $9, a seven-day license for $20, or a one-year license for $35. Good luck and happy fishing!

Kids Bike Show to Offer Prizes He’s been wanting it for years, and this is the year it’s going to happen. Legion Rider Kevin Engelbrecht, with the help of Ron Lively, is bringing a Kids Bike Show to Lansing. Engelbrecht grew up in Lansing, and he remembers the annual tradition the kids in his neighborhood all participated in each spring—getting their bikes ready to ride. After a long winter in the garage or shed, the bikes needed some attention. Tires might need patching, chains might need greasing, and last summer’s mud would need washing off. Fellow Legion Riders Nick and Patty Grigutis understand both the nostalgia of bicycle-riding and the importance of neighborhood traditions. Together with Engelbrecht, they are planning the Kids Bike Show to re-ignite the old get-the-bikesready tradition and put a new spin on it. The Kids Bike Show they have scheduled for May 5 will provide a forum for Lansing kids to clean up, decorate, and enhance their bikes—with the hope of winning cash prizes. “We want them to use their imaginations and be creative,” said Nick. “May 5 is also the Good Neighbor Parade,” he added, “and we thought this might be a way to promote being a good neighbor.” The event is open to all area kids, and there will be three age brackets—age 5 and younger, ages 6–10, and ages 11–15. A boy and a girl winner will be chosen in each bracket and awarded a $25 prize. A “Best in Show” bike will also be chosen. That winner will receive $100, and he or she will choose a charity to receive a second $100 donation from the Legion Riders. More details will be publicized later, but the Legion Riders wanted to give kids plenty of time to start thinking about their entries. “Decorate and be creative,” said Patty. For more information or to pre-register your child, email the Legion Riders: legionridersch697@gmail.com. Or call Ron Lively: 708-653-2687. 3 Ways Stress Takes A Toll On Your Body Did the latest challenge at work bring on a tightening in your stomach? Does constant worry about a loved one’s health make you physically ill yourself? Everyone at some point feels the effects of stress. Not everyone deals with stress in the best way, though. “Often stressed-out people seek relief through alcohol, tobacco or drugs, but that just makes matters worse,” says Richard Purvis, a health and wellness practitioner and author of Recalibrate: Six Secrets to Resetting Your Age (www. richardpurvisauthor.com). “Instead of relieving stress, those toxic substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state, causing even more physical problems.” April is Stress Awareness Month, a good time to reflect on how the demands and anxieties of daily life put a strain not just on our minds, but on our bodies as well. Stress, of course, is not always a bad thing. It does serve a positive purpose. “It can keep us alert and prepares us to avoid danger,” Purvis says. “But stress becomes a negative factor when a person faces continuous challenges without any time mixed in for relief or relaxation.” As a result, he says, people become overworked, and stressrelated anxiety and illness can occur. The strain leads them
to suffer from such ailments as headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain and problems sleeping. Purvis says a few examples of how stress can play havoc on our bodies include: Musculoskeletal system. When we experience stress, it’s natural for our muscles to tense up. “It’s the body’s way of guarding against injury and pain,” Purvis says. Usually, the muscles relax once the stressful event passes. But chronic stress keeps the muscles in a constant state of guardedness. “When muscles are taut and tense for long periods of time other reactions in the body are triggered,” he says. Chronic muscle tension in the shoulders, neck and head can lead to tension-type headaches and migraines. Respiratory system. Stress causes people to breathe harder. “That’s not a problem for most people,” Purvis says. “But if you suffer from asthma or a lung disease such as emphysema, getting essential oxygen can be difficult.” He says some studies show that acute stress events – such as the death of a loved one – can trigger asthma attacks in which the airway between the nose and the lungs constrict. Also, rapid breathing associated with stress – or hyperventilation – can result in a panic attack in some people. Gastrointestinal system. Sometimes people who are stressed will eat much more than usual. Sometimes they will eat much

Speaking Of Seniors
Don’t Buy Health Insurance Online or Over The Phone WOODROW WILCOX I recommend that people always buy Medicare related health insurance with a local insurance agent. The main reason is that if there is a problem with a medical bill not getting paid, the local insurance agent is in a good position to help resolve the problem. Without the help of a local agent, you are stuck trying to fix the problem yourself. Also, a local insurance agent is more likely to want to help you. The business and personal reputation of the insurance agent will benefit from giving service that helps a client. Medicare related health insurance companies charge the same whether you buy a policy through a local insurance agent or a call center full of insurance agents. So, there is no financial benefit to you, the customer, to buy a health insurance policy through a telephone call center. Buying Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage, or Medicare prescription Part D health insurance by telephone with an agent at a call center puts you at risk if there ever is a problem with a Medicare related medical bill. This means that if you do have a problem, good luck finding someone at the insurance company call center who will help you resolve the problem. If you don’t know where to look to solve the problem, a local insurance agent or someone on the agency staff is more likely to be able to look at the paperwork and find the problem. If the source of the problem is not found, you will never get the medical bill problem resolved.
Buying Medicare related health insurance online presents even more problems. Do you really know to whom you are giving your information? Can you be sure that your information will be protected by the firm from hackers? Does the firm have a business reputation worthy of defending by protecting your information? This insurance agency spends a lot to train the agents to be knowledgeable and to protect our clients’ information from dishonest people. Also, this agency has staff members that help with resolving medical bill problems of our clients and we don’t charge our clients anything to help with those problems. In less than 15 years, I helped our clients save over two million dollars by working to correct Medicare related medical bill problems. Whether you choose to work with our agency or not, I urge every senior citizen to find a local insurance agent to help review options, select the best Medicare related insurance plan for the client, and help to resolve any problems that arise. If you have a local insurance agent who will help you with any problem, you will sleep better at night. Knowing that you have help available if you need it is worth a lot. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicare Problems.com) and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com.

When you’re stressed, the brain sends alert sensations to the stomach. Your stomach can react with “butterflies,” nausea or pain. “Severe stress can cause vomiting, diarrhea or constipation,” he says. “If your stress becomes chronic, you might develop ulcers or severe stomach pain.” So what’s to be done? Purvis points out that stress is a natural occurrence in life and happens to everyone. “Since you can’t avoid your job, bills, or other life experiences, the best thing to do is learn to manage stress,” he says. “You won’t avoid stress entirely, but it is possible to minimize the effects by eating healthy, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and taking care of yourself in general.” Richard Purvis, author of Recalibrate: Six Secrets to Resetting Your Age, (www.richardpurvisauthor.com) is a health and wellness practitioner with more than 30 years of dedicated experience in nutrition, exercise, anti-aging and overall wellness. He is the current CEO of Skin Moderne Inc., and was founder of such wellness companies as Nutrimax, Nutritbrands and Skin Nutrition. He also was co-founder of Noggin Nosh.

Free Music Wellness Classes for Cancer Patients, Caregivers interesting, adding the ‘noodles’, ‘barley’, ‘vegetables’, etc. These parts of the soup are important for musical taste and texture.” “When we embrace new concepts and keep an open mind, it can result in numerous individual benefits,” Bouwman said. “Music therapy is a creative release. As participants engage in creative, music-based interventions, they aim to strengthen the way music functions in their lives.” The resource center is a program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of cancer care available in Northwest Indiana and the South Chicago Suburbs. Since first opening its doors in 2003, The Cancer Resource Centre has offered all of its services free of charge to all who enter: including those receiving care from medical treatment facilities other than the hospitals of Community Healthcare System. The Centre is funded from donations and grants, in-kind donations, and volunteer support. Individuals may check out books, view videotapes and other educational material within the library, or conduct internet searches to obtain research concerning diagnosis, treatment and general information. Groups gather to share experiences in social and professionally-led groups for support. Classes and programs, such as Music Wellness, are offered to help individuals connect in their experiences and to promote emotional wellbeing. The Cancer Resource Centre is located at 926 Ridge Road in Munster. For more information on the mind-body-spirit programs and a complete listing of upcoming classes and events, call the Center at 219-836-3349 or visit their web site at www. cancerresourcecentre.com.
If you listen carefully, you may hear the sound of music coming from the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster every first and third Monday of the month. The Centre is offering free Music Wellness classes to cancer patients and their caregivers. Music has increasingly been associated with healing qualities. The soothing power of music has been well-established. Studies show that sheer musical power can offer physical and spiritual healing through relaxation, stress and anxiety reduction, lowering blood pressure and helping to manage chronic pain. “Studies indicate that using music interventions such as the kind we use in Music Wellness class can help to increase social and communications skills, increase self-control/ self-expression, feelings of self-worth, and help to achieve feelings of general wellness and normalcy,” said class facilitator Kristen Bouwman, MT-BC. “We look at music therapy as a powerful tool in the healing process.” Bouwman explains that she follows the Music for Wellness circuit of interventions from “Unkefer’s Taxonomy of Music Therapy in Mental Health,” as a guideline for the class that includes Music Performing, Music Psychotherapy, Music and Movement, Music combined with Expressive Arts, Recreational Music, and Music and Relaxation. These interventions are rotated and each class uses a different guideline. “With every group there is an opportunity to learn, smile and maybe even have some fun,” said Bouwman. “For instance, during a recent class using a Music Performing drum circle, I told participants that we were going to make a music ‘soup’. I was the base of the soup, playing the main beat with my drum. Participants each played an instrument, something that made the soup recipe For sale: Coach purse, red leather, excellent cond. $45.00, Bookcase,, oak , four by four , $30.00 Hoover electric broom, $15.00. 708645-4245 For sale: Tank of 410A Dupont Refrigerant, Roe A m i Ju k e Box w i t h 4 5 records, Large 3 color Neon Miller Bar Light. 708-4180343

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I saw a home on a nearby street for sale that I would like to buy. I don’t want to work with an agent. Is there a certain form I need to make an offer, Or will any written offer be okay? Answer: You are about to have a disaster. Real estate offers must be properly written and cover a large number of potential issues. For this reason you should only use a standardized form which is appropriate to your area—and be aware that local requirements vary, so the form that works in one state is unlikely to work in another. Why would you not want to work with someone who is knowledgeable in local real estate? Besides, the sellers commission pays the Realtor you choose to work with, so there are no commission cost to you. Sounds like a no-brainer to me. Question: Does making a larger down payment really make sense? Or should I do

less down and then pay off principal over the next few years? Answer: A down payment of 20 percent or more means that you will not be asked to carry private mortgage insurance, and you may get a better interest rate because your loan will be seen as less risky than a mortgage with little or nothing down. However, you might want to put down less if you can find a better use for the money, like something with little risk and a better rate of return. RICHARD ZEKVELD How do you keep the barn from entering the house? How do you keep the stuff and stench of the farm from permeating your residence? This was my mother’s project. She had us well-trained in re-entry rituals. Still, an occasional deep clean was needed. Years ago, God pitched his tent among his people. He loved them and wanted to live with them. His people, however, often betrayed him, rebelled, and disobeyed him. These offenses, like refuse, piled up, spilling into God’s tent. Their stench permeated God’s presence, making it impossible for him to live there. But God loved them and was determined to live in relationship with them. His solution – the Day of Atonement. This was Israel’s deep clean day. They didn’t use Mr. Clean. They used blood – the blood of bulls and goats. The high priest carried the blood of

one goat behind the curtain into God’s throne room. While the people confessed their sins, he sprinkled goat-blood in God’s presence to cleanse the camp of the garbage of human guilt. What happens when you purge the house of filth? You’ve still got heaps of garbage that need to go to the dump. So too with our guilt. The high priest laid his hands on a second goat and confessed the people’s sins over it. Then he sent the goat to carry the garbage to a God-forsaken place and die under its crushing load. Good Friday is the Day of Atonement. Jesus is the high priest and both goats. He sprinkles his own blood in God’s presence to remove the guilt of all who seek him. He is the second goat, who ‘takes away the sin of the world’ and dies in a God-forsaken place. Now we can be at home with God. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church

Friends of Cub Scout Troop 3701 and Boy Scout Troop 701 were treated to a full pancake breakfast at Applebee’s in Munster, thanks to the Chicago Police Department. The CPD underwrote the fine communit y event as a good w ill gesture and to underscore the importance of young men participating in programs like scouting which helps build a solid foundation in good citizenship. Pictured here are Kathy and Larry Grzywinski of Lansing, Jesse Gomez of Lansing and yours truly and my husband Larry Kutz who were joined by many other locals from the south suburbs and Chicago.
