Underground Railroad Group Has New Name, New Home, Expanded Mission
The Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project has changed its name to reflect a broader mission and a much wider geographic reach. Going forward, the group will officially be known as the Midwest Underground Railroad Network (MURN).
The historical-minded group has its roots dating back to 2001 when it originally formed as the CalumetChicago Underground Railroad Effort (C-CURE). It became dormant for 10 years before being revived and incorporated under the Little Calumet River name in 2019. The group was founded to showcase 1) the history of the movement of the “freedom seekers” -runaway slaves who came through the Calumet area; and 2) the early settlers who assisted the courageous people who sought their freedom in the north where slavery was not permitted.
Many of the freedom seekers were heading to Canada where they would ultimately find their freedom, and the Midwest Underground Railroad Network follows their journeys and researches the history of the people, places, and events of the time prior to the Civil War and Emancipation. MURN is finding bits of this fascinating history from Chicago through the south suburbs, into and across northern Indiana, and up to Michigan where those escaping would cross finding their liberty into Canada around

Detroit. Hence, MURN has adopted and is developing the Chicago to Detroit Freedom Trail, a route and a story of those perilous journeys that they hope to develop into an official Heritage Trail that would be recognized by the National Park Service.
MURN has recently moved into offices at the First Reformed Church in South Holland, where there is a memorial erected dedicated to the brave Freedom Seekers and those who assisted them on their journey. Their mission has taken them from Chicago and the south suburbs across the state line to locations in Hammond, Gary, the Dunes area, Westville, La Porte, Michigan City, Valparaiso, and as far east as South Bend before crossing into Michigan. They have established associations with a number of historical societies, libraries, and institutions such as Purdue, Notre dame, and Indiana Universities.
In addition to doing research and connecting the dots, MURN offers tours and live presentations for school groups and civic, church, and historical societies.
MURN is looking for interested members and researchers to assist all along the way. They can be found on the internet at https://www. undergroundrailroadproject.org or on Facebook at Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project.
Financial Advice Column
Don’t lose track of financial accounts
SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN
For years, people save and invest in 401(k) plans, IRAs and other financial accounts. They wouldn’t lose track of this money, would they?
You might be surprised. About 1 in 7 people has unclaimed cash or property, totaling billions of dollars, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.
People lose track of their money for a variety of reasons: They change jobs and forget about their retirement accounts; they move and leave no forwarding address; they change names and don’t notify former employers; or their employers go out of business or merge with another company.
Whatever the reason, losing tabs on accounts that could be worth thousands of dollars is never a good thing. What can you do to avoid suffering this type of loss?
Here are a few suggestions:
• Maintain good records. Keep records of all your financial, investment and retirement accounts — and let a family member know where these records are kept.
• Keep a manageable number of financial accounts. The fewer bank and brokerage accounts you have, the easier it will be to keep track of everything. You might even want to consolidate accounts when possible.
• Report your change of address. Whenever you move, contact your financial services providers and any former employers with whom you may have retirement accounts.
• Report name changes. If you change your name, notify new and old 401(k) plan administrators, banks, brokerages and any other institution connected to your money.
ª Manage retirement accounts when you change jobs. If you leave your job, you might be able to leave your 401(k) behind with your old employer. But if you do, keep track of it. On the other hand, you could roll your old plan into your new
employer’s plan or into an IRA.
• Inform your financial professional about all your accounts. If you work with a financial professional, they can help you track your accounts, so inform them of all past and present IRAs and 401(k)s or similar employer-sponsored plans.
So far, we’ve looked at ways you can prevent losing track of financial accounts. But can you do anything if you suspect you’ve already left some money behind?
If you think you’ve lost tabs on an IRA, you can check old tax returns and bank statements to help you track your contributions and find the name of the financial provider that held your account. If it’s a 401(k), you can contact your old employer’s plan administrator.
You can get some help from other sources, too. The Department of Labor recently launched a retirement savings lost-and-found database (lostandfound.dol. gov) that can help you find pension or 401(k) plans connected to your Social Security number. For a stray IRA, you can check unclaimed.org, the website of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. And for various other sources of money — including uncashed checks from corporations and financial institutions, inactive brokerage accounts and unclaimed safe deposit boxes — you can check MissingMoney.com, the unclaimed property website of the National Association of State Treasurers. These sites offer no guarantees of finding your lost or missing accounts or other sources of money, so you still may have to do your own sleuthing. But as the old saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” — which, in this case, means you’ll help yourself greatly by tracking your accounts from beginning to end.

The commercials, which launched March 22, highlight how Gary’s proposal for the Lake County Convention Center is bolstered by the involvement of Hard Rock, a world-class brand that will amplify the potential for this development.
According to Matt Schuffert, president of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, “I am confident that under Gary Mayor Melton’s and Lake County’s leadership, we will work together to deliver a state-of-the-

Listen in Love
by Janice R Newman
Has anyone ever told you “I’d love for you to be quiet and just listen”? We don’t stay quiet even for a minute to listen. Also, we don’t love enough to allow the other person to talk. It seems easy to do, but for the majority, it’s a daunting task. The average person speaks 125 to 150 words per minute, but the brain processes the incoming information much slower. We often miss a large portion of what is being said. Think back to the old Charlie Brown cartoons, where the adults’ voices were nothing but garbled sounds. Charlie had to listen to understand what was being communicated.
In life, whether in business or personal relationships, we focus more on what we want to say rather than truly hearing what the other person is conveying. The lack of listening can cause misunderstandings and hurt feelings. We send back the message that we don’t care about or love them enough to take their feelings or what they have to say seriously. This leads to customers switching company loyalty and spouses divorcing. Love keeps relationships, business and personal, together. Listening and love are two words to master and achieve success.
Active listening is vital to success, especially in business. If you don’t listen to the wants and needs of your customers, you may fail to serve them properly. Today’s marketplace is highly competitive. If you don’t take customer feedback seriously or do customer research, you can lose your competitive advantage. Listening to clients allows a company to improve its products and services, increase customer satisfaction, and build long-term loyalty with repeat customer business.
Listening is crucial in personal relationships. When you feel heard, you feel valued, like the other cares. Marital disagreements often occur because one or both don’t listen to each other’s concerns. The Bible (CEV) states in Proverbs 18:13 “It’s stupid and embarrassing to give an answer before you listen.” Listening

On March 13, 2025, I wrote a letter to a medical firm in Lake County, Indiana that uses a medical billing firm in the Indianapolis area. I’ve handled billing problems with both firms in the past.
With some editing to protect privacy, here is the letter that I sent to help the client and the billing problem with these firms.
Our client sent to our firm a bill and some papers from your firm for our review. We found some problems with your billing to our client.
The client’s Medicare supplement insurance company explained the errors in your billing toward our client. Here are some of the problems.
The bill dated February 7, 2025 asks for payment of a balance of $21.39 on Account Number XXXXX for service on 06/05/2024. Here are the problems with this bill. The original billing amount was $325. Medicare allowed $83.84. The Medicare adjustment was $219.77. That left a balance of $21.39.
The secondary insurance company saw that you obligated your firm to give a discount to clients who use an insurance company connected with XXXXXX Health Network. The insurance company sent the balance after that discount to your firm. The check was sent to you on 09/13/2024 and your firm cashed it on 09/24/2024. The check was a bulk check for $36.99 and $17.11 of that was to be applied
shows respect and reduces conflicts. If you don’t listen to your customers or spouse, how will you know what they want? You wouldn’t be in business long or have a lasting marriage if you make gadget A but they want gadget B. Listening also demonstrates love.
The saying, “Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life,” refers to having a passion, love, and drive for your career, business, or hobby. Love motivates you to work on your task with enthusiasm and determination. If you love your job, it increases your productivity, energy levels, and enjoyment. Engaging in activities that you love reduces stress and increases your sense of purpose. The love for your work gets you motivated, and you make sacrifices to get the work done. In business, love for your customers is demonstrated in product improvement, elevating customer service and satisfaction, and showing a deep appreciation for their business. Without the customer, there is no business. Similarly, in your familial relationships, your love for others motivates you to do better for them. You go the extra mile for your family, and you stay committed to them during challenging times. 1
Corinthians 16:14
“Do everything in love.” Love guides our actions and keeps us motivated for the greater good of others.
Listening and love are not just words. They are difficult to master but have large benefits when mastered. In business, listening to and loving your customers leads to better products, services, and customer loyalty. In personal relationships, taking the time to listen and hear others, then acting in love, will keep our motivation high and push us to strive for better and more. So, listen while you’re showing love to others. Y? Why Not!

toward the balance for this client. So, you did not honor your commitment to give the discount. You did not account correctly for the $17.11 you got toward the balance. And you got the money on September 24, 2024 but had not posted the payment to the correct account by the time you sent the bill discussed dated February 7, 2025. Should we call that “sloppy” or “dishonest” bookkeeping?
If you need help finding the money, phone the XXXXX -- XXXXX banking service at 855-XXX-XXXX. The insurance company will report this to XXXXXX Health Network. If you need the insurance company’s help to correct your books, phone 800-XXX-XXXX. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps all our clients with this type of medical billing problem without charge. It is how we demonstrate to our clients that we really do appreciate and care for them.

I love a good donut. Perhaps a bit too much. Maybe you do too, or a perfectly baked loaf of homemade bread. If you’ve made these types of delicious food yourself, you understand the importance of yeast. Yeast — often called “leaven” in the Bible — is a crucial part of the bread making process.
In Galatians 5, we’re told that “a little leaven leavens the whole lump.” Put another way: “a little bit of yeast is enough for the whole loaf.”
Isn’t that true? Just a spoonful or two of yeast spreads throughout a whole loaf, fundamentally changing the dough’s substance.
In scripture, Jesus sometimes uses this picture to describe the Pharisees — those who were seeking to destroy Him. “Beware the leaven of the Pharisees,” he says in Luke 12.
Jesus is using yeast as a sharp picture of how the evils of this world spread so quickly and pervasively. Just a spoonful of spite and hatred can destroy a person’s relationships. Just a dash of anger can spread to all areas of someone’s life. Our sinfulness is so easily spread!

But Jesus also uses yeast as a positive. He says in Luke 13, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”
In other words, God’s kingdom will spread invariably. The leaven of the Lord will cause His purposes in the world to rise.
The Lord will also sprinkle his yeast in your heart. Once you’ve become a child of God, you will begin to look more and more like Jesus Christ in your thoughts, words, and actions. Those leavened with Jesus are fundamentally and pervasively changed. A leavened lump of dough cannot be un-yeasted. Neither can a child of God be un-adopted.
So the next time you bite into a delicious donut, ask yourself: have I been forever changed by the powerful leaven of Jesus Christ?

Question: I took a few small bushes from my yard because they were given to me by my late Mom. The buyer noticed this and complained that they had to stay. Does certain personal property have to stay with the home when I sell?
Answer: When selling or buying a home, you need to think ahead about what you are actually selling along with the property and the house.
The general rule is, “if it attached to the structure or the ground, it is real property and stays with the house.”
For example, curtains are attached, but will the sellers leave them?
They may match the decor in the seller’s next home. What if they take them and the buyers assumed they would stay?
This can cause a disagreement. Disagreements tend to move from minor issues to major issues, because emotions rule and logic melts away.
So if you want to take your curtains with you, put it in the contract. Don’t “assume” anything.
Buyers and sellers can argue about the silliest things.

Believe it or not, there is a story about how a deal almost fell apart because the buyer wanted the sellers to leave the welcome mat. It must have been a really nice welcome mat. Normally, sellers are free to take their welcome mat with them when they move.
The point is that you need to think about these things in advance. If you have to unscrew a screw, detach anything from the interior or exterior structure, or uproot anything from the ground -- and you want to take it with you when you move -- put it in the contract. That way there are no possible misunderstandings later.
As far as the bushes go, explain to the buyer the sentimental value in these bushes and ask if you can replace them with something else suitable to the buyers.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office is now accepting applications for its third-annual summer job program.
Approximately 150 positions are available for college, trade school, graduate school students or graduating high school students who are enrolled in college or trade school in the fall. Job offerings include working in one of the 25 departments in the Secretary of State’s office or at a DMV.
“Our summer job program allows young people to explore career opportunities, earn money and build valuable skillsets,” Giannoulias said. “This type of hands-on work also builds toward future academic and professional success and can translate into long-term benefits for our communities.”
Along with building job and people

Available positions include working in Secretary of State offices in Chicago, surrounding suburbs, Springfield and downstate facility locations. Under the program, college and trade school students earn $17 per hour and specific contractual intern positions for graduate and law school students earn $25 per hour.
Interested applicants can apply at www.ilsos.gov/summerjobs and must submit a resume, application, and cover letter explaining their interest in working at the Secretary of State’s office.
