South Suburban Genealogical & Historical Society meets Sat., March 8 at 10 am at the Martin J. Kauchak Public Safety Center, 3000 W. 170th Place, Hazel Crest, IL 60429. Members will gather for a watch party to view “AI & Genealogy: Trouble Ahead,” presented virtually by Thomas MacEntee
While AI (artificial intelligence) might be the current “hot” buzz word, the fact is that many genealogy vendors and even genealogists have already been using this technology for years. The AI industry is at a crossroads and within the next five years, it will permeate almost every aspect of business and society. Attendees will learn how AI is currently being used to improve the genealogy experience, and whether or not one should seek out other uses of artificial intelligence for their own family history research.
Thomas MacEntee, a Chicago resident, “fell” into the technology industry almost 40 years ago, and then left a lucrative career in information technology to pursue his love of family history and genealogy. His passion for
tracing his roots began more than 45 years ago when he was watching the mini-series Roots on ABC Television at his great-grandparents’ house in February 1977. He has presented locally and internationally.
Thomas will present virtually, and SSGHS welcomes the public to a free watch party. Those who wish to view from home via Zoom must register using the link in the event calendar on the society’s website, [https:ssghs.org]ssghs. org after which time the Zoom link will be emailed.
Information is with the society, (708) 335-3340 or email info@ssghs.org

Success does not happen by accident. It is fueled by motivation, determination, and a positive mindset that you can accomplish what you set out to achieve. Three powerful “I” words that play a major role in increasing motivation and harnessing success are inspiration, impact, and intensity. Each of these words can push a person forward, helping them reach their goals and fulfill their purpose in life. By understanding how these words work together, anyone can develop a stronger drive to succeed and reach the finish line.
Inspiration is the spark that ignites you to action and the force that awakens your dreams and fuels your motivation. It is the reason we get into action! Inspiration gives you an emotional connection to your purpose. Inspiration can come from anywherepeople of the bible, famous people, witnessing acts of kindness, charitable endeavors, or even a simple encouraging word from a friend. For example, teachers inspire their students to excel daily. You can be inspired to work against homelessness and hunger. The Bible inspires us with Philippians 4:13, which says, “But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” This verse shows how God’s Word can inspire and guide people in their purpose.
While inspiration starts with action, impact makes a difference in the world. You might have heard someone say, “I want to make an impact in lives”. The impact is the effect of actions, decisions, or words on others and oneself. When people pursue their goals with purpose, they not only achieve success for themselves but also influence others along the way. If you make an impact, it can inspire others to do the same.
For instance, a coach encourages team members to do their best, which impacts their confidence and performance. An employer that demonstrates respect and kindness can make an impact on the staff to reciprocate. Even small acts, like helping a neighbor or volunteering, can have a lasting impact on someone’s life. It is important to remember that true success is
not just about personal gain but also about making a positive impact on others, uplifting and inspiring people around you.
To truly achieve success, one must approach goals with intensity. Intensity means putting in strong effort, focus, and determination. It requires passion and dedication, even when you feel like giving up. For example, athletes show intensity by training, practicing for hours, and they never give up. Musicians and comedians demonstrate intensity by spending years perfecting their skills in their pursuit of success.
The Bible also encourages intensity and perseverance. Colossians 3:23 states, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” We are called to give our best effort, then great things can be achieved. Intensity ensures that the fire in inspiration is not extinguished, but a burning desire to action.
When we bring it all together: inspiration, impact, and intensity create a powerful team for success. Inspiration lights the fire, impact ensures a meaningful journey, and intensity keeps the momentum going. These three words can motivate you to greatness and to become unstoppable in your pursuit of success and happiness.
The best way to achieve a goal is to discover and pursue what truly inspires you. Inspiration will help you strive towards making a positive impact on your life and others. Lastly, pursue your dreams with intense dedication by not stopping until you have achieved what you desire. The road to success is not always easy, but with these three powerful and positive “I” words to guide you, success is within reach. Y? Why Not! Subscribe to our YouTube

Phoning Medicare to talk to someone about a Medicare billing problem has often been a hassle. But since the election of 2024, it has become more of a hassle. Why? I’m not sure, but I can guess.
Here is my guess. Some people are leaving and some people are coming to work in the Medicare system. I believe that Medicare uses some combination of federal employees and contractors and their employees. Some of them don’t like the idea of working under Donald J. Trump.
Since the election, phoning Medicare and getting a recording that one must wait twenty or more minutes to talk to a representative is a fairly common thing. That should be unacceptable. The federal Medicare system should be run to help those who phone for help in a timely, efficient manner.
People who work or manage others in a way that slows the system to waste
the time of people who phone for help should be retrained or fired. I cannot waste twenty minutes on hold each time that I phone Medicare to get help for one of our clients.
I have phoned Medicare several times over the last week to get it to send a document to one of our clients. Each time I phone, a recording tells me that I must wait about twenty minutes before I can speak with anyone at Medicare to get help.
Medicare is run very badly. I hope that President Donald Trump tells some people who now work in the Medicare system, “You’re fired!”

Question: In what ways does inflation affect home prices?
Answer: Inflation means that the value of cash is being reduced over time, thus it takes more dollars to buy a loaf of bread -- or a house.
In practical terms, homeowners can beat inflation with a fixed-rate mortgage. While the interest rate is set, inflation over time means that each month you’re paying with less-valuable dollars while the cash value of your home rises. If the cash value of your home rises faster than the rate of inflation, they you’ve gaining additional spending power and that’s both one measure of real wealth and often a very good reason to be a longterm real estate owner.
Question: I have a neighbor with a dog that howls through the night. What would you suggest I do to remedy this situation?
Answer: Most communities require appropriate pet supervision, so the

proper step is to have someone contact the owners. The local humane society, pound or health department can all provide information. Ask if your name will be kept confidential; that’s a common policy in many communities. When you speak with local officials ask them to do as little as possible. You do not want someone’s pet removed, you only want better supervision from the owner. It may well be that in this case the owner does not hear the dog and is literally unaware of the problem since it only occurs at night.

Disappointment.
RICHARD ZEKVELD
It’s what you feel after someone doesn’t live up to your expectations. It’s grief that follows the death of a dream. It’s disillusionment on the heels of extinguished hope.
You had high hopes for a relationship. Then reality set in. You expected the promotion. Your co-worker got it instead. You looked up to him. Then he messed up. You set lofty goals. But you let yourself down. You anticipated children. Now you’re sixty and childless. You’ve prayed for healing. God took her away instead.
It’s hard to live with disappointment. It’s easier to cope with it in destructive ways. It’s easier to slide into bitterness. It’s tempting to turn our pain outward to punish others. It’s tempting to shield ourselves with cynicism. “I will never hope again. Then I won’t be disappointed.”
Allow for disappointment. Grieve it.
Disappointment is sadness that things aren’t the way they’re supposed to be. We live in a messed-up world.
Disappointment is an invitation to look up. People and situations will disappoint us. But God, ultimately, will not disappoint those who trust him. In Psalm 22, David voices disappointment with God. “Oh my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer” (22:2). Then he reflects on God’s faithfulness. “In you our fathers put their trust… in you they trusted and were not disappointed” (22:4-5).
Jesus cried out the words of this psalm. He stepped into our skin to experience our disappointments in our messed-up world. He felt acutely that things are not the way they’re supposed to be. He gave his life to make everything the way it’s supposed to be again.
Disappointment, then, is also an invitation to look forward to the day when all disappointment will give way to total satisfaction and joy. Forever. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org

It’s tax season again — which also means, unfortunately, that it’s time for the annual array of scams aimed at taxpayers. Fortunately, by being alert, you can protect yourself from these attempts to defraud you.
Your first line of defense is to recognize the warning signs of potential tax scams. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) cites these common red flags:
• Promises of big payments — If you’ve filed taxes for many years, either by yourself or with the help of a tax professional, you probably have a pretty good idea of whether you’re getting a refund, and how much it will be. But scammers, often using social media, may promise huge refunds by essentially encouraging you to claim tax credits to which you’re not entitled and then charging large, upfront fees or a fee based on your refund amount.
• Suspicious websites — Watch out for strange-sounding or misspelled web links — these can take you to harmful sites, rather than the official site of the IRS (IRS.gov).
• Solicitations from charity imposters — The many natural disasters we’ve experienced in recent years has brought out great support from people wanting to help friends, neighbors and even total strangers. However, these catastrophes have also encouraged scammers who solicit contributions to bogus charitable groups. To determine whether an organization is a qualified charity that can receive tax-deductible contributions, visit the Tax Exempt Organization Search tool on IRS.gov.
• Threats or demands — IRS impersonators may threaten you with large fines, or even arrest, if you don’t make immediate payments of what they claim you owe. You can protect yourself from many tax-related scams by knowing how the IRS will or won’t communicate with you. Typically, the IRS will initiate contact with you through regular mail delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.
You can verify the legitimacy of any letter by visiting your secure IRS online account, under the “Notices and Letters” section.
Other ways the IRS will contact you:
• Email — Only with your permission, with a few exceptions, such as criminal investigations
• Text – Only with your permission
• Phone — Only to discuss your case, verify information or set up a meeting
• Fax — Only to verify or request employment information
• In-person visit — Rarely done, and typically only following a letter The IRS will not:
• Contact you or take payment on social media.
• Accept gift cards or prepaid debit cards as payment.
• Threaten to call law enforcement or immigration officials.
• Take your citizenship status, driver’s license or business license.
• Leave pre-recorded voicemails (robocalls).
• Mail tax debt resolution advertisements.
If you have doubts about any offers or communications, whether supposedly from the IRS or not, you may want to contact a trusted, qualified tax professional. Also, be on guard for your elderly family members, as senior citizens are frequent targets of scammers. If you talk to these family members regularly, see if you can find out about any unusual offers or solicitations they may have received. Finally, if you believe you are a victim of monetary or identity theft, you can report these issues using the IRS website at IdentityTheft.gov. You can also refer to IRS Publication 5027 — l Identity Theft Information for Taxpayers. Tax scams and identity theft are serious threats — so do whatever you can to defend yourself.

After the war, Neil worked on a farm to financially assist his family. He entered the Merchant Marines at age 18 and traveled extensively throughout all of Europe. Following his service, Neil immigrated to the United States of America, settling in Evergreen Park, Illinois, with the support of his aunt and uncle. By day he worked pouring concrete foundations and by night he learned English at Fenger High School. Not long after becoming a citizen, he was drafted into the the U.S. Army and served in Germany. Upon his return to Illinois, he rekindled a connection with Joanne Huisenga, and they married in 1960. Together they built a home in South Holland, IL, where they raised three kids, and then enjoyed eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Committed to his family, he could be found framing his wife’s paintings, gardening with relatives, serenading his kids to sleep with his trumpet, and conscripting his grandchildren into trying
on military uniforms and marching around the yard.
Even while bustling between work or music or family, he was always excited to sit down and have a cup of coffee, over which he’d happily share (in a captivating Dutch brogue) that all he had and all that he did was a gift from God.
You are welcome to join the family for a celebration of his life and a witness to the resurrection on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Smits Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12pm until 3pm, and the funeral service will be at 3pm. A committal with honor guard will be held on Monday March 3 at 10:30 am at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
