Bishop

HAMMOND, IN – Bishop Noll Institute senior Maisie Wragg, a standout both in the classroom and on stage, is set to bring the beloved character of Jo March to life in the school’s upcoming production of “Little Women.”

“The thing I find most compelling about Jo is her willingness to be unapologetically herself,” said Wragg, of Lansing. “She is expressive and dramatic, and she doesn’t worry if others will judge her for that. Storytelling brings her joy, and she embraces it freely.”

Embodying such a dynamic character, different than the meek, shy girls she has played in the past, presented its challenges.

“The most challenging aspect of portraying Jo for me personally has been being able to convey that dramaticness confidently and comfortably,” she said. “(Playing Jo) has taught me how to be comfortable showing that expressive side of myself.”

Wragg’s favorite number is “The Weekly Volcano Press.”

“I find it so fun to perform! It is the song with the most cast members all together, and there’s something special about the feeling you get when you end a grand song in unison with so many people, with so many friends.”

Reflecting on her time in Bishop Noll’s theater program, Wragg expressed her gratitude. “I can confidently say that without theater, I would not be the person I am today. The bonds that you form through this intimate collaboration is truly unique in my experience.”

Balancing senior year responsibilities with rehearsals has been demanding, but Wragg studied hard and was named one of Noll’s Graduates with Distinction, those with a GPA of 4.0 or above.

“It can be difficult, but rehearsals are my favorite part of the day, so a lot of the time they feel like a break. The main thing that makes balancing everything doable is using every possible moment during the school day to do homework, so after a packed school day, it’s nice to be able to do something I enjoy for a few hours.”

Her hope for the audience is to appreciate the time spent with loved ones.

“I hope that after ‘Little Women,’ people will appreciate the time they spend with their loved ones more. I think that many people often take it for granted, and they could regret it one day. Another thing, although it can be so difficult, is to celebrate someone’s life and memory rather than be stuck in it.”

Wragg is also looking forward to her next chapter, planning to attend the University of Notre Dame and major in Chinese language.

“I didn’t believe it at first,” she said of reading her acceptance to Notre Dame. “I wasn’t expecting to get in …. It took a good 10 seconds before it hit me.”

“I have had an interest in learning languages for as long as I can remember, and ever since taking Chinese 1 my freshman year at Bishop Noll, I have always enjoyed Chinese. Through that, I also found a desire to learn Korean. Musical Theater is something that brings me a lot of joy, and I don’t want it to stop after high school.”

Julie Niu, Wragg’s Mandarin Chinese teacher at Bishop Noll, described her as honest, diligent and hardworking.

“She is brave in challenging herself. In the future, she will surely be an academically excellent woman who dares to climb the peaks of life.”

“Little Women” is based on the original book by Louisa May Alcott. Bishop Noll will stage the musical April 1013. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10. They can be purchased at the door or in advance online via bishopnoll.org

Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi reminds all senior homeowners in Cook County to apply for their property tax-saving exemptions before the April 21 deadline. Exemptions provide homeowners to savings on their property tax bill. Senior homeowners are eligible for two main exemptions:

Senior Exemption: This exemption is available to all seniors 65 years of age or older who occupy their property as their principal place of residence. This exemption automatically renews every year.

“Senior Freeze” Exemption: This exemption is available to all seniors that receive the Senior Exemption and had an annual household income of $65,000 or less in 2023. Homeowners must reapply for this exemption every year. The Cook County Assessor’s Office has mailed out application booklets to all homeowners that received the “Senior Freeze” last year and need to reapply.

Homeowners can also apply online for their exemptions

at www.cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions.

Homeowners are strongly encouraged to apply online so staff can easily locate the application, provide a status update, and notify the homeowner if missing documents are needed.

This year, anyone reapplying online for the “Senior Freeze” Exemption will have access to a streamlined application form, reducing the time it takes to apply.

If homeowners are unsure of their existing exemptions, they can review the “Exemptions History & Status” section of the “Property Details” page for their home.

Exemptions forms are available in Spanish, Polish, and simplified Chinese languages. Applications can be downloaded at www.cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions.

As a reminder, exemptions are only reflected on the second installment tax bill.

Time for some financial spring cleaning

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN

Spring is here — which means it’s once again time to wash the windows, organize your cabinets and steam your carpets. This year, in addition to tidying up around your house, why not also consider some financial spring cleaning? Here are some suggestions to consider: • “De-clutter” your investment portfolio. When you embark on your home cleaning mission, you might notice that you have redundancies — three blenders, two vacuum cleaners, and so on. Similarly, you might find duplications in your investment portfolio, perhaps in the form of multiple, near-identical stocks or mutual funds. If so, then it might be worthwhile to consider selling some of these investments and using the proceeds to boost your portfolio in other areas in which you may be lacking.

• Cut back on “overgrown” investments. Now that winter is over and you’re venturing outside more, you may notice some overgrown shrubbery or some tree branches that need pruning. And while it may sound counterintuitive, you might also have some investments that have grown too big for your needs. For example, you might own some growth-oriented investments whose value has increased so much that they now take up a larger percentage of your portfolio — and carry a higher degree of risk — than you originally intended. If that’s the case, you might be better off by selling some of these investments and purchasing others to help bring your investment mix back to its desired alignment.

• Dust off your investment strategy. With more sunlight now pouring in your house, you might notice that the corners of your walls and ceiling may need a good dusting. And as you continually work to strengthen your financial foundation, you may need to dust off your investment strategy,

especially if you’ve recently experienced changes in your life, such as a marriage, addition of children, new job, and so on. And as you move closer to retirement, you may also need to adjust your strategy in some ways. For one thing, you might want to adopt a more conservative investment approach in the years immediately preceding your retirement, though you’ll still need to have some growth potential in your portfolio to help keep you ahead of inflation.

• Protect yourself from financial dangers. As you go about your household spring cleaning, you may find actual physical dangers that need to be removed or stored more safely, such as sharp objects or broken tools. And as you navigate daily life, you may also find threats to your financial safety — the need for an expensive home improvement, or a major car repair or an unexpectedly large medical bill. If you don’t have the money available to pay these expenses, you might be forced to dip into your retirement accounts or run up your credit card or take out a high-rate loan. To protect yourself from having to make these moves, you may want to maintain an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account, separate from those you use for your daily living expenses. Of course, some of these moves can take some time — but by getting started on them soon, you can help put your financial house in better shape by the time the next spring cleaning rolls around.

Heart Smart

Enraged, you snatch a precious pitcher from the table and hurl it to the floor. It smashes into a million pieces, scattered far and wide. You cannot undo what you have just done.

When the First Adam rebelled against God, he shattered something precious. Sin has shattered creation, our relationships with God and others, and ourselves. The process of disintegration and breakdown continues in our fallen world. Our bodies, too, disintegrate. “You are dust and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19b, ESV).

Imagine someone recorded your pitcher smashing to smithereens. Later, she plays the video in reverse. Shattered fragments merge from every corner of the room, like a 3-D puzzle, in the shape of your precious pitcher. For a split second you see the network of cracks between the pieces. Then they disappear. Your pitcher jumps back into your hands, which set it back on the table.

That’s the process Jesus Christ, the

Final Adam, initiated when he rose from the dead, on Resurrection Sunday. His death and resurrection in our place were the turning point of cosmic history. When he rose with the glorified, indestructible 2.0 version of his body, he initiated the reversal of the Great Shattering unleashed by the First Adam. All who entrust themselves to the care and control of Christ participate in that Great Reversal. His resurrection becomes your resurrection. He restores your shattered relationship with God through repentance and faith. His power begins to restore your shattered relationships with others and your shattered inner self. When he returns at the end of time, he will reverse the disintegration of your body, by raising you with a Body 2.0, like his own. Finally, he will reverse the disintegration of creation itself.

That’s the good news of Easter. Richard Zekveld, PastorCovenant Fellowship Church (cfcsh.org)

Morals, Meaning, and Mentoring Help Us Succeed

One huge factor in success is the “three M’s”: morals, meaning, and mentoring. These three words can help anyone stay motivated, keep focused, and reach their goals. First, having strong morals inspires you to stick to your values. They guide you to focus on doing what’s right, being respectful, and honest. Morals build good character and reputation. Second, meaning is the reason for wanting to achieve something. It gives purpose to your dreams and actions. Meaning is the “why” and motivational push to keep you moving forward. Third, having a mentor or being a mentor can make a difference in success. A mentor is an experienced person who teaches you, encourages you, and helps you avoid mistakes on your road to success. The three M’s give you direction, strength, and push for success.

Morals teach us the difference between right and wrong. They are the values we choose to believe in and follow. Values shape how we think and act. They guide our decisions, develop our character, and provide a standard to live by. People with high morals are honest, kind, and respectful of others by being trustworthy and taking responsibility for their actions.

Having meaning of purpose provides the understanding and purpose of why we do something or are working towards a specific goal. When we know our “why” it motivates us to keep moving forward to the goal. Meaning can bring purpose to your career such as a nurse finds meaning in helping sick kids feel better. A teacher finds meaning by encouraging a student to read. Your dreams and aspirations motivate factors

for you to keep trying even when you feel like giving up.

To be successful, you need a mentor. Mentoring is when someone with more experience coaches or guides you to success by providing support, advice, and encouragement in their career or private life. Everyone should have a mentor. Even corporate CEOs and upper management have mentors to learn new skills and to receive needed inspiration to help them grow into leaders.

Being a mentor is an important way of giving back. By coaching, you inspire confidence in someone and teach them what you’ve learned. In Titus 2:7, says, “In everything set them an example of doing what is good.” This means that we can inspire others through our actions, morals, and decisions. If they see us doing right, they will want to do the same.

Morals, meaning, and mentoring are powerful, motivational tools that help us stay motivated and succeed. Morals provide a standard for our belief system and keep us honest and mentally strong. Meaning gives us a reason to keep moving forward. Mentoring provides the teaching and training to help us grow and allows us to give back by helping others. Whether you’re pursuing a goal, helping others, or facing a challenge, having good morals, finding meaning and purpose in what you do, and getting mentored or mentoring, these three M’s: morals, meaning, and mentoring, will motivate you to a brighter future and achieve great things. Y? Why Not!

Speaking Of Seniors

Toenail Clipping Company Almost Clipped Client’s Purse

On March 18, 2025, the daughter of an elderly client delivered a medical bill that was sent to her mother that she questioned. She wanted us to check it for accuracy and tell her if it should be paid.

I read the bill and researched it. Then I phoned the daughter and told her NOT to pay the bill. Then, I typed a letter to the firm that sent the bill.

The firm was based in Chicago, sent an employee to a senior facility in Indiana to clip toe nails on the elderly, then used a medical billing firm in Michigan to bill our client. Her alert daughter who questioned the bill and asked me to check it saved her purse from being clipped of some money that was not owed.

With some editing to protect privacy, here is the letter that I sent to the firm that sent the bill.

Our client sent to our firm a bill from your firm for our review.

The bill seeks a balance of $70.64 on Account Number XXXXXXXXXX for services rendered on 06/14/24 and 08/29/24.

I phoned the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn what it knew of these claims. The secondary insurance company reported that your bill to our client was FALSE. Here is why.

For the services rendered on 06/14/24, Medicare ruled that the Medicare allowed amount for the bill was $53.17; the Medicare paid amount was $42.53;

that left a balance of $10.64 which the insurance company paid your firm on 12/19/24 by a virtual credit card payment with the trace number XXXXXXXXX. It seems that your firm filed that claim late with Medicare because the insurance company did not get the claim from Medicare until 12/02/24.

For the services rendered on 08/29/24, Medicare approved $53.17; Medicare paid $41.98; and the insurance company paid your firm the balance of $10.64 on 09/25/24 with paper check number XXXXXXXXX which your firm cashed on 11/15/24.

Your bill to our client seeking a balance of $70.64 has a statement date of 10/25/24. Your bill to our client upset her and her family. Please, send a statement showing this balance as ZERO. Thank you.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency helps all our clients with medical bill problems similar to this. It is how we demonstrate that we care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service, why not switch to our agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores and online.

Question: We sold our house or we thought we did. Last day the buyer backed out and now says we were the cause. What do we do? Also we had a house that we where going to buy with profits from the sale of the first home, now this probably wont happen.

Answer: Real estate contracts routinely have “contingencies” -- “I’ll buy your house if it passes a home inspection” or “I’ll buy the house if the owners will make certain repairs?” Were there requirements in the sale agreement you needed to complete by closing? Typically such information is known well before the date of settlement. Or, did the buyer fail to fulfill all obligations under the sale agreement? As to the second home, does your purchase agreement make it contingent on
