Question: How can I find out if my legal problem is serious enough to warrant the services of a lawyer? Answer: It’s easy. The Illinois Lawyer Finder Service (www. illinoislawyerfinder.com), operated by the Illinois State Bar Association, offers consumers a referral to a qualifying lawyer. You can search the online directory free of charge by entering the field of practice, county and zip code. An option is to call the hotline at (888) 662-3851 to receive the name of a lawyer, who will provide an initial 30-minute consultation for no more than $25. You are under no obligation to hire that lawyer.

Doris Galinksi has dedicated the last five years to giving back. Last year, she volunteered 600 hours at Meals on Wheels (MOW) in Merrillville. Now, MOW is awarding Galinski with the Gold Presidential Service Award at its Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, kicking off National Volunteer Month. Six years ago, Galinski lost her husband around the same time she lost her job. She found herself wondering what the next chapter of her life would be like with such drastic changes. “I’ve worked since I was eleven. I had to fill that void,” Galinski said. “Seven months after my husband died, I was looking for something to do.” Galinski’s niece invited her to a volunteer fair in 2013 that ultimately lead her to meet Joan Vith, MOW Volunteer Manager. “I went around the room and came across Joan,” said Galinski. “She said ‘come see what you’d like to do.’” Meals on Wheels helped Galinski break the monotony and find her purpose. When she was working full-time, she recalled that chores like grocery shopping were saved for the weekend. After her husband passed away, she found herself putting them off and not getting them done. Volunteering has given Galinski back her day-to-day routine that she enjoyed before. When she started at MOW, Galinski was

hesitant about driving delivery routes due to her unfamiliarity with the area. She asked Vith if she could begin with office work and Vith was more than happy to oblige. Now, Galinski will often assist Vith with her routes. “Doris is a Godsend. Whatever she does, she does it with a good attitude,” Vith said. She joked that MOW would not have Galinski if she had not lost her job. “She’s doing the same thing here that she was doing at her job all those years. We’re lucky to have her.” Galinski said she didn’t realize she had spent over 600 hours volunteering. She said meeting new volunteers and visiting the clients motivates her to continue giving back. “I just want to help people,” she said. “Seeing what you actually do to help people, that’s enough inspiration. You don’t do it to be recognized.” Vith said the luncheon is a great opportunity to recognize volunteers for the hard work they put in to keep Meals on Wheels running, from answering phones to delivering the meals to clients. “You never realize how important it is to give back,” she said. “I am so fortunate we can make a difference.” For more information on how you can make a difference with Meals on Wheels, contact the organization at 219-756-3663 or visit their Merrillville location at 8446 Virginia Street, Merrillville, IN.

Graduating Seniors Share College and Career Plans

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Last week, on a spontaneous whim, I challenged myself to find one word to describe each of my kids – one word to capture something of their unique essence as members of my family. The exercise led to intentional reflection about each of my children which, in turn, stirred up my love and appreciation for each as an individual. One by one, I shared and explained my word for each over dinner. My wife did the same. What a great experience! It got me thinking. Do I really notice people in my life? Do I take the time to know and appreciate them for who they truly are? How often do I stop and tell them what I see and love about them as unique individuals, created in the image of God? Jesus does. He is tuned in personally to every adopted child of God. That is, to everyone who comes to him in faith

and finds inclusion in the family of God. To him, you’re not just an anonymous, nameless face in a cosmic crowd. “He calls his own sheep by name,” the Bible tells us (John 10:3b). He knows your name. He knows you. The same is true of his Father and ours. “O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar… You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you know it completely, O LORD… For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (selections from Psalm 139). It’s great to be known. And loved. Here in their final semester, the countdown is underway for graduating seniors to decide on next steps for post-high school life. In a recent interview, Thornwood HS seniors Ericka Ramsey and Jihan Davis shared their plans for the future. Ramsey, with a 5.33 GPA on a 6.0 grading scale, is an International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) student who will divide her time in college between academics and athletic training, which will hopefully be an open door for Olympic tryouts. Looming large in her future is her desire to be a hockey player. “I’ve been playing hockey for seven years,” she reveals. During this past hockey season, the Thornton Township native commuted to Glen Ellyn several times a week to practice for up to two hours for the Illinois Junior League, but she will soon be training in Hoffman Estates. If she isn’t ready for the 2020 Olympics, her backup plan is to join a women’s hockey league. She is thinking about attending either the University of Rochester or St. Augustine College next fall. Jihan Davis will be graduating along with Ramsey in May. Davis has a 5.15 GPA on a 6.0 grading scale. Davis’ plan is to major in English and her career goal is to become a published author.

Since her college search began, Davis has applied to 18 colleges and universities. Before making a decision, she said, “I’m going to wait until I get all of the acceptances back, and I feel like I will get them all before April.” Among those who have replied so far are Cornell, Duke, Emory, and Notre Dame. Davis has applied to several scholarship programs to help cover the cost of her tuition. She has also applied to QuestBridge, an online platform that connects the nation’s brightest students from low-income backgrounds with leading institutions of higher education. “When you apply through QuestBridge,” said Davis, “a lot of schools will offer pretty good financial aid packages.” As the two students graduate and move toward their chosen colleges and careers, Ramsey offered words of encouragement to incoming high school students: “Don’t give up when stuff is really hard. Reach out to your friends.” Davis added, “Make sure you are doing something that you are passionate about and something where you are spending your time wisely. Don’t just do your work and go home. I started joining clubs, which made my school experience way more enjoyable. I got to see and participate in some of the amazing things we do here at Thornwood.” Graduation is scheduled for May 20, 2018.

Hospital Filed Claim Incorrectly WOODROW WILCOX A senior citizen client brought medical bills and other papers to our agency’s Munster office and asked why his insurance did not pay the bills. The staff at the Munster office copied and forwarded the documents to me at our Merrillville office on March 27, 2018. Our client is from Munster, Indiana. I reviewed the documents. All the claims were denied. The hospital wanted our client to pay $384. I knew that something was not right with the bill. But, at first glance, I did not catch the problem. When I phoned our client’s Medicare supplement insurance company to learn how the insurance company had denied the claims, I saw the problem. The hospital filed the claim incorrectly. The hospital filed the claim as though our client had a Medicare Advantage insurance policy. But, our client has a Medicare supplement

policy. Claims for the two types of insurance are filed differently. I wrote a letter to the hospital and explained the error. I asked them to do the right thing and file the claim correctly. When that is done, I believe that this bill for $384 to our client will be paid in full. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency strives to give a high level of customer service to our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give such a high level of service, maybe you should switch to an insurance agency that does do that. Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

On the Market Versus In the Market MIKE BUDER There is a big difference between a seller being on the market versus being in the market. To put a home on the market a seller hires a real estate agent to list their house for sale. If that home is in the market, agents and buyers view the property and make offers to purchase it. A fishing analogy would be if the bait is floating on top of the water, but the fish are in the lake 25 feet below, the fisherman will get a nice suntan but will not hook any trout. The wise angler will continue to lower his bait until the fish begin to bite. A novice will curse the fishing guide, and consider taking up golf as a new hobby. In her book Death And Dying, Elizabeth KublerRoss said there are 5 stages of dying: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Many home sellers go through 5 similar stages on the way to a sold sign or expired listing. Lets look at those stages in detail. DENIAL is a psychological defense mechanism that lets a person “off the hook” for any responsibility for a problem, such as a home not selling. Many times the agent becomes the scapegoat. It’s always easier to blame a realtor than locate the real problem. Frequently the problem is improper pricing, greed and impatience. ANGER is a choice. It is seldom a wise choice. Some people actually enjoy “lighting their hair

on fire”. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to gain attention. It’s always easier to “curse the darkness, that light a candle”. BARGAINING is a preassumed position that many overpriced sellers never get to. They make statements like “if the buyer makes me an offer, I’ll negotiate with them” or “why can’t the buyer make me an offer?” Fish (and buyers) are very smart. They usually wait for the bait to be lowered to their level before they bite. Even flying fish seldom jump right into the boat. DEPRESSION can be avoided if a sellers “mental maps” reflect reality. They seldom do. That’s why many listings expire. Most properties are overpriced and improperly staged. Many sellers never ask their agents what they would do if the property were their own. ACCEPTANCE of an offer is what happens when a seller puts their home on the market and then adjusts their pricing into the market. Selling a house simply means ACCEPTING REAL ESTATE REALITIES. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My parents are considering using a small discount broker to sell their home. But they really need to sell it quickly. Any suggestions? Answer: If they want to take a chance with one of their biggest investments, thinking that a discount commission broker will still attract enough buyers to get them top dollar for their home and sell it quickly, well that’s their decision. But Consumer Beware! Some discount companies take listings at flat rate, then pay a cooperating fee on top of that to the SELLING broker. That extra cooperating fee is also paid by the Seller. You might see a brokerage ad offering a flat fee of $2000. But somewhere in the tiny print, if it’s disclosed at all, will be a disclaimer that there is also a fee that the seller has to pay to the selling broker. This type of advertising is misleading to the consumer. Some discount brokers advertise that they will take a listing for 2 or 3%. Again, many of these brokers don’t draw attention to the fact that the selling broker is still paid an additional fee by the SELLER! Another 2.5-3%. In our opinion, a national broker will net you more money for your home because they reach more of the qualified buyers.

We could work for any company that we choose, but we chose a well-known, national Real Estate company due to their extensive marketing, and their agents are much better trained. So, when a problem arises, they know how to handle it! Here is a quote from author and cconomist John Ruskin that sums it all up: “It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money—that’s all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the things it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot—it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.” E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Free Fishing Day Saturday, April 21, is the first of four Free Fishing Days in Indiana this year. On these special days, Indiana residents can fish public waters without needing a fishing license or a trout stamp. Free Fishing Days are prime opportunities for families to learn to fish because adults do not need a fishing license on those days, and children ages 17 and younger do not need a license on any day. A number of special events will be held on April 21. • A Family Learn to Fish workshop will take place at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour from 9 a.m. to noon. Advance registration is required. • More family fishing fun will happen at Salamonie Lake in Andrews, Fort Harrison State Park and Krannert Park in Indianapolis, Clifty Falls State Park in Madison, Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell, Glen Miller Park in Richmond, St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend, Tri-County Fish & Wildlife Area (Wyland Pond) in Syracuse, and Prophetstown State Park in West Lafayette. Specific information on these Free Fishing Day events is on the Free Fishing Days website at dnr.IN.gov/fishfree. People interested in attending a Free Fishing Day event should contact the host property in advance because some activities, like the one at Muscatatuck NWR, may require registration. The three other Free Fishing Days for 2018 are May 19 and June 2 and 3.

nurturing environment offered there,” Raggs said. “I am a fan of HBCU’s because I went to Clark and Spelman; so, with that being said, I felt it was so important for the students to see a different perspective. These institutions have made a lot of our leaders who they are today.” Traveling with the group were John Arrington, Director of College and Career Development for District 205, and Dr. Jerry Doss, Assitant Superintendent of Human Resources and Community Relations for District 205. Arrington said, “During the tour, 10 students were offered onsite acceptance! One student was offered a full ride scholarship to Jackson State University, and nine other students were accepted at Rust College.” Jackson State University, established in 1877, is located in Jackson Mississippi, and Rust College was established in 1866 and is located in Holly Springs, Mississippi. “I had never visited an HBCU before and, overall, the trip was good,” said Michael Ogletree, who is a senior. “I like the colleges and the communities we visited. go to a four-year institution to major in Radiology.” Aubriana Johnson, a junior said, “I loved the trip. Personally, I didn’t think I would like it, because I wanted to attend a culinary school, but now I think I might be attending one (an HBCU)—I want to go to Tennessee State.” As part of the tour, students also went to Memphis and visited Beale Street, as well as the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King was shot. The tour continued on into Mississippi, where students visited Jackson State, Hinds Community College, and Rust College. The tour included the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, which, according to Mosley-Raggs, was phenomenal experience for them. Arrington agreed. “Historical Black Colleges and Universities were, and still are, the foundation that has educated millions of African-American students. These are the universities that took African-Americans under their wings when it was illegal for any other schools to accept Blacks. These institutions are tried and true, and offer a solid education to African-American students.”

By Patricia Muhammad While the majority of the student body in District 205 enjoyed time off from their rigorous class schedules over Spring Break, more than 57 students traveled to several Historically Black Colleges (HBCU) in the Deep South from March 26-29, making several stops at AfricanAmerican institutions and other notable sites along the route. “We started out in Tennessee and visited HBCUs, including Tennessee State and Fisk University,” said Veronica Mosley-Raggs, AVID and Career Portfolio Coordinator for Thornwood High School. Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African-American community. Included are Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, Howard University, Winston-Salem State University, Jackson State, and many more. “It is extremely important for AfricanAmerican students to know about HBCUs because of the family atmosphere and the

Tax Season is finally over. Of course, how much you pay in taxes depends on a variety of factors, many of which you can’t control. But you might give some thought to how you can manage your investmentrelated taxes. Here are some suggestions to consider: • Contribute to your employer’s retirement plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b) or 457(b), contribute as much as you can afford. The more pre-tax dollars you put in to your retirement plan, the lower your taxable income. Your employer also may offer a Roth 401(k) option, under which you invest after-tax dollars, so your annual income won’t be lowered and your withdrawals will be tax-free. • Contribute to an IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA. With a traditional IRA, your contributions may be deductible, depending on your income level; with a Roth IRA, contributions are not deductible, but your earnings can grow tax-free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½ . • Follow a “buy-andhold” strategy. You can’t control the price movements of your investments, but if you do achieve gains, you can decide when to take them – and this timing can make a substantial difference in your tax situation. If you sell investments that you’ve owned for one year or less and their value has increased, you may need to pay capital gains taxes at your personal income tax rate, which, in 2018, could be as high as 37 percent. But if you hold investments for more than

Auto Recovery WE BUY JUNK CARS. Title o r n o t i t l e . To w a n d

one year before selling them, you’d be assessed the long-term capital gains rate, which is 0, 15 or 20 percent, or a combination of those rates. • Consider municipal bonds. If you’re in one of the higher tax brackets, you may benefit from investing in municipal bonds. The interest on these bonds is typically free of federal taxes, and possibly even state taxes. Interest from some types of municipal bonds may be subject to the alternative minimum tax (AMT). However, because of the new tax laws, the AMT exemption amounts were increased significantly. You might be wondering what these new laws mean to investors. In terms of your regular investment activities, the effect might not be that significant. The tax brackets for qualified dividends and capital gains – such as those realized when you sell stocks – will remain about the same. This means that most investors will continue to pay 15% to 20% on longterm capital gains and dividends. Consequently, the new tax laws shouldn’t really affect you much in terms of your decisions on buying and selling stocks or investing in companies that may pay dividends. Of course, it’s still a good idea to consult with your tax advisor on how the totality of the new laws will affect you. Ultimately, your investment decisions shouldn’t be driven only by tax implications – nonetheless, it doesn’t hurt to take steps to become a tax-smart investor. Ornamental pear trees, most commonly known as Bradford pears, have been a popular landscaping tree in Indiana for decades. So popular that they are crowding out native Indiana trees. For that reason, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources encourages homeowners and landscapers to avoid planting such trees and to replace them when possible. “Over time different varieties of pear have cross pollinated in our urban areas, allowing them to rapidly spread into our natural resources,” said Megan Abraham, director of the DNR Division of Entomology & Plant Pathology. Cultivated forms of this invasive species are most accurately known as Pyrus calleryana or Callery pear tree. Commonly available ornamental pear cultivars, all of which are invasive and should be avoided, include Bradford, New Bradford®, Cleveland select, autumn blaze, Aristocrat®, capitol, Chanticleer®, and dozens more. In addition to being invasive, these cultivars, which are known for their striking white flowers, typically don’t last long. They are structurally weaker and more easily damaged by storms than native trees. Carrie Tauscher, urban forestry coordinator with the DNR Division of Forestry, says that evidence of the trees’ rapid spread is easy to see. “Just take a look for glossy leaved, egg-shaped trees in highway interchanges,” Tauscher said. “It’s common to find them in unmown areas, under utility lines, and in lots and fields initially cleared for construction that are then left fallow.” Stopping the spread of this invasive plant means selecting alternate trees for yards and forested property. The best tree to replace any invasive tree species is one that is native to a particular region. If you are looking for an alternative flowering tree for Indiana, serviceberry trees, which have similar white blooms in the spring and fruits that attract wildlife, are one option. Eastern redbuds, which grow quickly, with eye-catching lavender flowers in the spring are another option. To learn more about native trees that are great for landscaping, visit the Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society page at inpaws.org/landscaping.

(An excerpt from “The Seasons of Life”) “Following the turbulence of winter comes the season of activity and opportunity called Spring. It is the season for entering the fertile fields of life with seed, knowledge, commitment, and a determined effort. “It is not a time to linger, nor to ponder the possibilities of failure. Foolish is the one who would allow springtime to pass while dwelling upon the memory of the successful crop last fall or the failure to reap last fall in spite of the massive efforts of last spring. “It is a natural characteristic of springtime to present itself ever so briefly or to lull us into inactivity with its bounteous beauty. Do not pause too long to soak in the aroma of the blossoming flowers, lest you awaken to find springtime gone, with your seed still in your sack.” Sincerely, Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of Spring— when it finally arrives.

Motorcycle Safety Session in Hammond April 19 The Latin American Motorcycle Association (L.A.M.A.) Crown Point invites everyone to join them at the Indiana National Guard Armory located at 2530 E. 173rd St. in Hammond on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 7 p.m. for information on motorcycle safety. L.A.M.A. Crown Point is partnering with Next Step Motorcycle Academy of Lowell to share safety tips for new and veteran motorcycle riders and motorists. Next Step Motorcycle Academy offers different classes for two- or three-wheel riders. “I found the need to teach not only basic skills but to refine skills for any two- or threewheel rider,” said Phillip DeCausemaker, owner of Next Step. “Personally, it is all about safety—partnering with other motorcycle riders to refine their ride and be safer in traffic.” The session will include basic motorcycle safety tips, tips for passenger riders, how motorists can share the road with motorcycles, 2 pc solid maple Heywood Wakefield china cabinet, 75”H x 54”W; bed spreads & comforters, blankets, quilts, fromtwin to king size, $15$25 e.a 708-481-6907 Duvet covers, asst. sizes $3$5 ea; duvet covers, asst. sizes $3-$5 ea; Sure Fit sofa covers $20, loveseat covers $15, large chair covers $8. 708-481-6907 Bed sheets: twin size $2 ea sheet, full size $3 ea, queen sz $4, king size $5. 708-4816907 Set of 4 chair cushions $10; medical scrubs, uniforms, $2 ea pc. 708-481-6907 Vintage Madame Alexander doll “Degas Girl” #1575 in original box, wrist tag and stand $45; barbie dolls $5. 708-481-6907

and the opportunity to register for upcoming classes for motorcycle endorsement. “As a rider, safety is a major priority. Just because I can drive in a straight line does not mean I practice safe riding,” said L.A.M.A. member Gilberto Romero. “As a rider you get complacent and it is good to have a reminder to practice safety.” “April begins motorcycle season in the region. We will see more motorcycles on the road,” said Decausemaker. “It’s all about enjoying their ride, their hobby.” L.A.M.A. Crown Point is an organization that fosters diversity and fellowship, and promotes a positive image of motorcycle riders through volunteering and neighborhood initiatives. L.A.M.A. consists of people from around the globe that value family, integrity and loyalty, and have a passion for motor touring.
