The Amanda and her family at last year’s Childhood Cancer Awareness walk

_______________________________

Amanda Knight hopes to use her experiences from battling leukemia to encourage other children who are in similar journeys as their child life specialist. Knight plans to become a child life specialist. “The main reason is because of my [hospital] night nurse Stacy,” said Knight. “When Nurse Stacy shared with me that she also had leukemia as a little girl, I woke up completely. It was such a relief to hear that there is hope of making it past all the treatment.” Knight will never forget the moment when the doctors delivered the news to her parents that she had leukemia in May 2011. “Both of my parent’s faces went extremely white. They looked like ghosts,” said Knight. “To see my parents that way was one of the most heartbreaking moments of the entire journey.” During high school, Knight was involved in sports. She loved volleyball, and it was at a volleyball practice where she first ran into unexpected health issues. “I was playing volleyball and I was abnormally out of breath,” said Knight. “I finished the practice, but I remember telling my mom that I felt like I was going to faint. It felt like the flu symptoms times 10.” The next day, Knight’s pediatric physician sent her family to Riley Children’s Hospital to get further testing. When she was diagnosed with leukemia, Knight started chemotherapy and radiation treatment that very day as part of a clinical trial. “You never think your child is going to have cancer,” said Knight’s mom, Lisa Knight. “She was a vibrant 15-year-old who was full of energy, and slowly, she became frail and weak. Yet, losing strength and her hair, Amanda grew in faith where she lost her health.”

Just a week after one cycle of treatment, Knight was in remission. As exciting as that news may sound to a cancer patient, she still had to go through two and a half years of treatment. “One of the most difficult things during treatment was seeing myself look different,” said Knight. “I went through a lot of physical changes. I lost all my hair and I lost a lot of weight. Seeing myself in the mirror, I remember thinking that I didn’t know who that was, and who I saw wasn’t really me.” Knight was receiving treatment every week after being diagnosed. Nearly two years later, Knight received her last treatment in August 2013 and remains in remission. Currently, Knight is in her last year at Purdue University Northwest pursuing her undergraduate degree in human development and family studies. She plans to attend graduate school to receive a master’s degree as a child life specialist. The Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation offered Knight the opportunity for a summer internship in 2017. The Knight family has had many personal ties with the NICK Foundation, being one of the families that the NICK Foundation supports. “Amanda was one of the first survivors to receive our Jonathon Milstead Memorial scholarship when she began college,” said Donna Criner, executive director of the NICK Foundation. “Since then, Amanda has become a valuable part of the NICK Foundation. She is always our beautiful ‘Elsa’ at our kid friendly events.” NICK serves families in NWI dealing with pediatric cancer. To volunteer, donate or receive more information about the NICK Foundation, visit nwicancerkids.org. The NICK Foundation is non-profit pediatric cancer organization founded in 2009.

The Calumet Memorial Park District took part in the Comcast Cares Day on April 17. Volunteers went to Burnham Park to clean up the playground areas and paint the benches, flag pole and basketball hoop.

In the first photo, CMPD Board President Nyota Figgs, Burnham Village Trustee Travis Claybrooks, and Burnham Mayor Robert Polk put a fresh coat of paint on the park’s logo. In the second photo, after an entire morning of hard work, the volunteers gather to take pride in a job well done.

National Kennedy Center Honors South Holland Native

Western Illinois University junior Nissi Smith won the Musical Theatre Intensive category of this weekend’s Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) in Washington, DC, beating out 17 other national finalists. Smith, of South Holland, IL, qualified to take part in the competition through a Midwest regional competition. She said hearing her name as the winner of the KCACTF Open Jar National Award for performing “I’m Here,” from “The Color Purple,” left her shaken. “Everyone that I was participating with in this ‘competition’—and I use that word lightly, was just phenomenal,” said Smith. “It was such a humbling experience working with fellow artists.” Smith added that the award she won wasn’t the most valuable thing she walked away from the weekend with. “The real award was meeting the people I met, learning from them, and knowing that I found a tribe of like-minded people,” she said. “That’s why I said I use the word ‘competition’ lightly. It never felt like a competition. It was a collaboration, and I am elated that I now have another opportunity to meet and work with more great artists this summer.” WIU Department of Theatre and Dance Chair Tammy Killian said Smith has “grabbed hold of the individual, holistic approach to the art of theatre we offer in the classroom and production and has embodied it.” “The Department of Theatre and Dance MP Lawn Care Service and Clean Up Home Interiors. Saudi Arabia has a lot of oil under their country. They like to sell it to us and we are happy to buy it. I heard an interesting fact—women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive. This law may be changed in June 2018. Several years ago, 47 women drove their cars in Riyadh to protest the driving ban. They only managed to drive for half an hour before being stopped by police. Those female drivers paid heavily for that act of protest, as they were barred from foreign travel for a year, fired from their government jobs, and denounced on mosque pulpits by clerics. In Saudi Arabia gas cost about $1 per gallon. How crazy is that? Gas at $1 a gallon and women are not allowed to drive? I’m going to give thanks for the freedoms we have in this country—including my wife jumping in the car to go get groceries. Here’s a final trivia fact—men are worse drivers than women in almost every category including reckless driving, DUI, seatbelt violations, speeding, failure to yield, and stop sign/signal violations. Ok—women are better drivers, but give guys props for having an internal compass—we just know which way to go, without ever asking for directions! could not be prouder of her work in our program and her representation of us at KCACTF,” said Killian. “When you look at Nissi, and all our WIU T&D students, you see what is at the heart of our program; discipline, accountability, perseverance, problem solving, communication, creativity, humility, respect and vision. We are proud of and grateful to Nissi for representing WIU and all we stand for in such a graceful and beautiful way.” Killian added that Smith considers the subtleties within the work and the purpose behind playwright’s words. “She’s works tirelessly in production and in classes to create, develop, and discover her own artistic identity,” she said. “ She has synthesized work in her dance, acting, voice and musical theatre courses to hone audition packages and the pieces she performed at KCACTF. She is an insightful, sensitive, and self-aware individual driven to explore the arts, and through them a deeper understanding of the human condition.” The Open Jar award provides Smith with a full-ride scholarship, including round trip travel and hotel, to the Open Jar Institute in New York City. The institute provides a week of workshops, opportunities to meet industry representatives and to see Broadway productions every night. In addition to the institute, Smith is contracted this summer to work with the Crossroads Repertory Theatre in Terra Haute, IN, this summer in its production of “Hairspray.” She will perform as the characters of Lil Inez/Shayna from May 28-July 29, before leaving for the institute. At Western, Smith is an actor, singer, dancer and choreographer. To qualify for the national event, Smith had to perform a song and a dance in competition with 18 students from other Midwestern universities. Only one competitor qualified for the national competition. Smith also recently performed in WIU’s production of “Avenue Q,” playing Gary Coleman. Speaking Of Seniors

Fighting Bad Billing Firms

page

4

Thornton High School Hosts Family Reading Night and Poetry Slam

WOODROW WILCOX On April 2, 2018, I wrote a letter to a medical billing firm about a bill that it had sent to one of our senior citizen clients. The client lives in Crown Point, Indiana. The Illinois billing firm sent a bill to our client for $219.24 for services that were allegedly rendered on 05/15/2013. Previously, I had written to the firm and told it that the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company never got any such claim from Medicare. I asked that essential claim information be sent directly to the insurance company. But, also, I helped our client to request from Medicare any information about such a claim. On April 2, 2018, I got Medicare’s response. NO SUCH CLAIM WAS EVER FILED. Medical service firms that are contracted with Medicare have a time limit for filing claims with Medicare. If the claim is not filed within the time limit, the firm is not supposed to bill the senior citizen. But, some firms that fail to file within the time limits do send bills to seniors. That is wrong because it is against the rules. So, I sent a letter to the firm to tell them that Medicare reported the

claim never was filed and to stop billing our client for the $219.24. In the past, I have caught medical billing firms cashing checks from insurance companies but not crediting the payments to the senior citizen patients’ accounts. Then, the billing firms would send a bill to the senior citizen patient for the same amount of money that the insurance company had just paid. The billing firms were “shaking down” senior citizens for money that was not owed. I brought that to the attention of some public officials. All the help that I give to our senior citizen clients in such medical bill matters is FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” for our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service, maybe you should switch to a firm that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicare Problems.com) and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com.

At Family Reading Night at Thornton High School, children gather in the library for storytelling time with Joseph Whittington, Alderman for the 2nd Ward in Harvey. From Left: Tia Love, 4, Kennedy Flowers, 7, Mason Walker (middle), 5,and the grandson of Alderman Whittington, and Jonah Wallace, 7. ___________________________________________ Thornton High School hosted its third annual free Family Reading Night and Poetry Slam on April 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It was a night of books, food and fun focused on schoolaged children. The event attracted more than 200 readers between the ages of 4-12. Prior to the event, thousands of books were donated through Scarce, a non-profit organization, and an additional $1,000 of Title I grant money was donated to purchase books from Barnes and Noble, according to Jalanii Lewis, organizer for the event and an English teacher at Thornton High School. Children packed the hallway and flipped through the colorful pages. Inside the school’s library, the young participants were treated to a puppet show, storytelling, face painting, henna hand painting, and balloons twisted into fantastic shapes. A popular feature was the Reading Treats Table, which challenged children to identify books with a particular treat. A Moon Pie represented the book Goodnight Moon, and a popcorn display represented Hop on Pop. “The Family Reading Night initiative serves as an opportunity to inspire children to understand the value of reading,” said Lewis. “We have a Spanish storyteller—though it’s difficult to find Spanish language books for readers of all ages.” They plan to have more Spanish language books by next year’s event. Local libraries, including Harvey, South Holland, Dolton, and Blue Island, were on hand to sign up Family Reading Night participants for library cards, and tell them about activities and events happening at their respective locations. Reading is fundamental to learning, and having great books for children to read is a critical step towards their reading comprehension. Tamika James of Harvey said, “This is a great opportunity for the kids to check out books that will enhance their reading skills. Some kids are not fortunate enough to have books at home, so it’s good for them to be able to come in and get books. My son chose five books, and my daughter picked six HomeDecor, Christmas/ Holiday, Lawn/Garden & more.

or seven books to read.” James, like many parents with young children, is encouraged about her children’s ability to learn through reading. Studies show that it is important to immerse children in reading in order to develop their linguistic skills. According to Teach Reading Early (teachreadingearly.com), “Reading opens the door to your child’s early academic success, imparts a love of learning and leads to higher grades in every subject. Numerous studies have shown that strong oral language skills are the basis for literacy development.” Teach Reading Early places emphasis on getting children to read before age six due to the remarkable effect reading has on brain development. Second Ward Alderman and South Suburban College Trustee, Alderman Joseph Whittington, Jr. was at the event to read to the children. Pleased to participate in Family Reading Night, Whittington said, “Tonight, I’m surrounded by great minds and I’m elated to be a part of this, to be able to read to our children. As an African-American male, it is important to show them how fun reading is. I’m doing this because someone inspired me when I was little—poet Gwendolyn Brooks— and I hope that I can inspire them as well.” Concurrent with Family Reading Night, the Poetry Slam was held in the Thornton High School auditorium from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Ciara Miller, Poet, Essayist, and author of Silver Bullet, drove all the way from North Lawndale on Chicago’s west side for the event. Prior to the Slam, Miller offered poetry writing tips and assignments to poetry teams from Thornton, Thornwood, and Thornridge, a group comprised of 40 young students aged 9-12. “I was really impressed by the fact that a lot of them really don’t define themselves as poets, but the way they took on the assignments that I gave them, they made it their own. They expressed their own views and their own thoughts. They are just amazing,” she said.

Turn of Phrase Red Herring: A deliberately misleading clue or instruction; a distraction.

When training hunting dogs to follow a scent, a herring (reddish in color) would be dragged across the trail to teach the dogs not to be distracted from the scent they were supposed to follow.

Teddy Bear Created in Memory of Patient Offers Comfort to Hospitalized Children

Nicky cuddles with his Captain HurriKane bear. ___________________________

The Flamini Foundation created the Captain HurriKane bear in memory of Kane, a former patient at Rush University Children’s Hospital who passed away from a congenital heart defect at 16-months-old. Captain HurriKane bears are delivered to children who are hospitalized in Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland areas. Social workers and child life specialists frequently share stories of how the bears impact children and their families during their hospital stay. A toddler boy needed a major surgical repair that required him to be airlifted out-of-state. He flew alone from Rush University Children’s Hospital to Ohio four separate times. Flying 4 separate times from Rush University Children’s Hospital to Ohio, the boy had to fly alone. His family was not able to accompany him and drove to Ohio. As he was loaded on the stretcher to leave Chicago, his mother ran out holding his Captain HurriKane bear. She placed the bear next to his head and told the hospital team that he could not fly without his lucky bear.

“The bear flew all four times, right next to the little guy’s head, the one familiar thing in an unfamiliar world,” said Erika, a social worker at Rush University Children’s Hospital. The bear became a familiar presence and a token of good luck in the Pediatric Unit at Rush as well as other local hospitals. Nicky was three-years-old when he needed a liver transplant at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Captain HurriKane was with him before and after his surgery. “Last week, we flew another child to Cincinnati and he too had to fly alone. He wasn’t alone through, Captain HurriKane was with him all along the way,” said Erika. The bear has since become a necessity to have aboard the plane before takeoff. “Sometimes it is a simple little token of comfort that both kids and their parents need during a major life event,” said Erika. Indiana State Parks ‘Let’s Camp, America!’ Weekend May 4-6 Learn to pitch a tent, build a fire, cook outdoors and more during Let’s Camp America! Weekend at Indiana State Parks, May 4-6. Let’s Camp America! Weekend is a nationwide initiative of the National Association of State Parks Directors. The weekend is a chance for beginners to learn basic camping skills, and for experienced campers to get their equipment out for a spring weekend. Activities will take place at all 32 Indiana State Parks properties and on social media. The weekend celebrates all forms of camping, including tents, trailers, recreational vehicles and camper cabins. This year it also includes some family cabin options. The weekend concludes with free admission for everyone — campers and day-users alike — on Sunday, May 6, in honor of Visit Indiana Week, sponsored by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development. DNR’s State Forest Recreation Areas and ORV sites at Redbird and Interlake will also offer free admission on May 6. The 32 properties owned and managed by Indiana State Parks offer a combined 7,700 campsites and more than 150 cabins, and nearly 700 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. Each state park and state reservoir property will offer the usual educational talks and hikes with interpreters, along with a special camping or outdoor skills program sometime during the weekend. Programs are listed at calendar.dnr.IN.gov, and also will be posted later at stateparks.IN.gov/3282.htm. Topics vary from s’more-making to fire building. “We really want to celebrate the joy of camping with family and friends, whether you’re a seasoned veteran or new to the activity,” said Ginger Murphy, Indiana State Parks deputy director. “We have lots of folks who camp after Labor Day in the fall, but not as many who camp in the spring. The bugs aren’t bad, and the fishing and wildflower watching are both good. We encourage Hoosiers to start a new spring camping tradition.” “Camping 101” programs at select properties offer 12 families

who have never camped at a state park the opportunity to do so for free that Friday and Saturday. Participants will also receive free guidance with campsite set up as needed, and the use of essential gear for up to four people, including sleeping bags, pillows, a cooler, camp chairs, lantern and firewood, plus free gate admission for the weekend and a free one-day pass for future use. “Camping 101” tent-camping programs will be at Whitewater Memorial, Summit Lake, Potato Creek and Versailles state parks. Space is limited to three families at each of the four parks, and advance reservations are required. If sleeping in a tent isn’t for you, Mississinewa Lake and Shakamak State Park will host “Camping 101” programs with their camper cabins. These cabins are basically “four-walled camping” structures with simple bunks, a table and an outdoor fire ring. Three cabins at each property are being held for first-time campers. Participating families at Mississinewa and Shakamak will also receive use of the camping gear listed above, along with free gate admission for the weekend and a free oneday pass for future use. In addition, two family cabins at Lincoln, Chain O’Lakes and Harmonie state parks are available for first-time cabin users at half price. Family cabins provide a living/dining area, kitchen with some pots and pans, room to sleep up to six in beds/ sleeper sofas, and indoor restrooms and showers. Bedding and any personal items must be provided by cabin users. For more complete information on cabins, visit camp.IN.gov. For all “Camping 101” programs, participants must bring their own food, and submit an equipment deposit of $25 for tent camping and $30 for camper cabins. The deposit will be returned after the campsite or camper cabins are used and gear is left in good condition. To reserve a “Camping 101” site for either tent-camping, camper-cabin, or family cabin use, contact Christie Sorrels at csorrels@dnr.IN.gov. Sites will be provided on a first-come, firstserved basis, and will include a check of our camping and cabin

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Thank You Neighbor MIKE BUDER Are you selling your home or just helping your neighbors sell theirs? There are a couple kinds of people who help their neighbors sell their home. The first kind is the neighbor we all want to have. Their yard is perfectly landscaped, the trash cans are never left out by the curb, the cars are tucked safely into the garage instead of parked on the street, they don’t have dogs that would even think about barking or cats that consider your garden a litter box. They are friendly, courteous and can’t wait to tell anyone they meet what a great neighborhood they live in, including the people who are considering moving to the block. They are the cheerleaders for the community, make everyone feel welcome and are the best advertisement for a new neighbor you could ever hope for. The second type of neighbor is just as nice. Although they are trying to sell their home too, they still love their neighborhood and they are going to miss their friends after they relocate. They also take great care of their lawn and wouldn’t even think about allowing home maintenance to go undone. Beautiful flowers by the front door, a freshly pressure washed sidewalk and driveway and a butterfly garden that would make the greenest

of thumbs envious. They are friendly, courteous and “THEIR HOME IS WAY OVERPRICED FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD”. Now if I were selling my house, I would want both of these types of neighbors. But if I had to choose just one, I would definitely thank my lucky stars for Mr. and Mrs. Overpriced. Why you ask? Because no matter how lovely the landscaping, no matter how shiny the fixtures, how new the appliances, how clean the floors, how uncluttered the closets and cabinets and how nice the people…OVERPRICED IS STILL OVERPRICED and usually serves to make your neighbors homes look like much better deals. Buyers are doing a lot of research before making offers on homes and you can bet that if your price is significantly higher than the others in your neighborhood, you are at a disadvantage. So, are you priced right or are you just helping your neighbors sell their homes? Freckles getting love and affection from Lauren Igartua and friends. ______________________________________

Dog Leaves Last Year’s Event with Former Manager “Freckles is my best friend. She’s always by my side. We love loving each other. Adopting her is one of the best things I’ve ever done,” said Lauren Igartua, former Merrillville ReStore manager. “Freckles has given me nothing but laughs and smiles.” Igartua adopted her family pet, Freckles, at last year’s Adopt-a-Pet Event at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. Freckles is a blue heeler who is nearly two years old. “I remember that day,” said Igartua. “I was holding the door open for all the rescues to come in and get settled at their tables, and a little blue heeler walked through the door. She was so excited to see where she was going and what was going on.” Igartua loves all dogs, but one of her favorite dog breeds is the blue heeler. When she first saw Freckles, it was love at first tail wag. “She was smiling and just had a positive energy, though she was a little nervous with all the commotion. Once I saw her good nature, I knew that if I didn’t rescue her now, I would regret it,” said Igartua. “She was a perfect fit for me. She was everything I wanted from a dog and I was determined to make this work.” Igartua’s family knew how much she wanted Freckles so they helped dog-sit while she was at work. At first, Freckles did not trust many people because she has been abused and neglected before being rescued. “It is insane how someone could treat an animal so poorly that the animal reacts in

that manner,” said Igartua. “But after the constant love and attention I and my family have given her, she broke all those habits and is a completely different dog. It’s crazy how far she has come. She’s 100% happy now and with no worries.” Igartua joined ReStore in 2014 as a cashier, but soon was promoted to store manager. She first heard about Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore from a friend who worked there. “I love what the organization does and what it stands for and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Igartua. When ReStore hosted its fifth annual Adopt-a-Pet Event in 2017, Igartua helped by reaching out to different rescues and sponsors to see who would be interested in attending or donating to the event. Igartua said last year’s event turned out great and hopes the same for future events. “We had a great turn out,” said Igartua. “The public loved the event and they got to see different, unique and cute animals.” Igartua is no longer at the Merrillville ReStore since moving out-of-state, but she will always have a beautiful reminder from working there. This year’s event will be held at both ReStore locations in Griffith and Merrillville on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. If you would like to donate items, stop by the store or call 219-972-3000. Guadalupe Gonzalez (Left) and Sibo Llano reviewing policies. ______________________________________

For nearly two decades, Sibo Llano has devoted her career to the wellbeing of moms and babies at Mental Health America of Lake County. Sibo is the Early Start Coordinator and she is partnering with HealthLinc East Chicago to assist with MHALC’s goal to reduce infant mortality. The Early Start program is a free voluntary program that is designed to help women get the support and services they need to have a healthy baby. “By handing out flyers and vouchers and speaking one-on-one with pregnant women, I am able to educate them on our parent support programs,” said Llano. “Giving people the opportunity to succeed in having a healthy pregnancy and baby is my top priority.” The Early Start program originated when MHALC recognized in 2017 that Indiana had the eighth highest infant mortality rate in the United States, with 7 deaths per 1,000 live births. The program is primarily focused in East Chicago, because the 46312 zip code has the highest infant mortality rate in the state. Llano started her career with MHALC as a Family Support Specialist in 1999. Nineteen years later, Llano travels the community reaching out woman who are pregnant to promote and enroll women in the Early Start Duvet covers asst. sizes $3$5 ea; Surefit sofa covers $20; loveseat covers $15; large chair covers $8. 708481-6907 Bed sheets twin size $2 ea sheet, full size $3 ea; queen size $4 ea; king size $5; set of 4 chair cushions $10. 708481-6907 Medical scrubs, uniforms, $2 ea pc; vintage Madame Alexander doll Degas Girl #1575, in original box, wrist tag & stand $45; barbie dolls $5. 708-481-6907 Did you know you can enter your Garage Sale listing online? Program. “I wanted to work in this position because I am a member of the community and I am also bilingual, which helps me connect to moms,” said Llano. “I genuinely enjoy helping people and supporting families that are a part of the community.” To ensure that everyone gets the care they need, The Early Start program offers a free screening plan to ensure optimal individualized care and referrals. Dr. Sonya Williams stated, “It is so inspiring to see the commitment Early Start has in providing quality services to our patients. My team and I do our best to make sure every patient who qualifies for the program is given the opportunity to obtain services.” “We just want to be out there and be known for giving people options and affordable care,” said Llano.” As MHALC works alongside HealthLinc East Chicago through The Early Start program, it remains a safe place to help women and their families become the best parents they can be. Mental Health America of Lake County can be contacted at 219-937-7733 with questions about all their parenting programs and referral services. You can visit their website at www. mhalakecounty.org.

Free Drug Education Series on YouTube The Lutheran Foundation, through their mental health initiative, LookUpIndiana.org (LookUp), has partnered with members of the Regional Mental Health Coalition of Northeast Indiana to produce a video series titled “Today’s Drugs.” The objective of the video series is to educate the community on the dangers of today’s drugs. Drug poisoning deaths have increased dramatically over the last 5 years. While the most dramatic increase in deaths has involved opioids, there have also been increases in deaths involving cocaine, methamphetamine, synthetic drugs, and marijuana. This is due in part to drugs being much more potent than in the past. In addition, many drugs are now mixed with other drugs, resulting in deadly mixtures. There are currently 11 videos in the series with information on opioid addiction, including medication-assisted treatment and recovery, which can be found by visiting the opioid page on LookUp. Other drugs such as Spice, Methamphetamine (Meth) and Synthetic Drugs can be found by visiting the Synthetic Drugs topic page on LookUp. To view the whole series, visit the LookUp YouTube channel. More Counties Adopting Vote Centers Technological advancements in the digital age have led to increased convenience, cost savings, and accessibility in many fields. In Indiana, this is now true where elections and voting practices are concerned, thanks to the implementation of vote centers. Vote centers serve as an alternative to traditional, neighborhood-based precincts. With vote centers, voters may cast their ballots on Election Day at any vote center within the county or jurisdiction, regardless of their residential address. Vote centers must be approved by unanimous decision of the county election board within each county. To date, 36 counties have made the choice to open vote centers. Under the traditional precinct model, counties must find multiple poll workers, from both parties, to fill potentially hundreds of voting sites. Often, the smallest of these sites only see a handful of voters, making the cost of opening and staffing these precincts unjustifiably high. According to the study Vote Centers and Election Costs: A study of the Fiscal Impact of Vote Centers in Indiana, vote Lawn Care: Grass-cutting, bush-trimming, aerating, power-raking, spr ingcleanup, gutter-cleaning, sodding, mulch, stonebrick, retanning-walls, fullyinsured. centers produce significant savings for counties and offer local election officials more flexibility. They also reduce voter confusion and administrative time spent by election staff. Cost savings is a strong argument for vote centers, but not the only argument. One of the central purposes of implementing vote centers is to offer voters convenience and accessibility. Because voters can vote at any center throughout their county, it is easier to schedule a trip to the polls. If their only opportunity to vote on Election Day is during their lunch break at work, they can visit the polling location down the street from their workplace, rather than traveling all the way back to their home precinct. Vote centers increase voter confidence by offering flexibility and an easy election process. Because a voter can vote at any location in a vote center county, as voters check-in at the polls the electronic poll book is instantaneously updated, which ensures that each voter votes only once. The pollbooks at each location are connected to a mirror of the statewide

voter registration database, rather than the actual database itself. This protects the database from potential attacks and allows the pollbooks to be reloaded or reset at any time if a problem occurs. All equipment used at a polling place is certified by the nonpartisan Voter System and Technical Oversight Program (VSTOP) at Ball State University prior to the election. An engaged citizenry is integral to a healthy society, and I encourage all eligible Hoosiers to exercise their right to vote in every election. The higher our turnout, the better we are represented in government. By embracing an easier, cost-effective voting processes for Hoosiers, we step a little closer toward that goal. To see if your county has implemented vote centers, and to learn more about the process, voters can visit www.in.gov/ sos/elections. Hoosiers may also check their registration, look up their polling place, and volunteer to work the polls by visiting www.IndianaVoters.com.

Talk to Your Spouse About Your Retirement Vision BOB KRYGSHELD If you’re single, your retirement goals are your own – you don’t really have to consult with anybody, and you can change your plans whenever you like. However, if you’re married, you and your spouse should develop a joint “vision” encompassing all the key areas of your retirement lifestyle. These are a few questions you may want to address first: • Where should we live? Once you retire, you may need to consider two key aspects of your living situation: the size and location of your home. Regarding size, you may look around one day and realize you have more living space than you actually need. This is especially true, of course, if you have children who have set out on their own. So, if you have a large single-family house, you may want to consider whether you should move into a condominium or even an apartment, either of which might be more cost-effective for you. As for location, you may decide that retirement is the perfect time to move, either to seek a more favorable climate or to be near grown children and grandchildren. In any case, moving to a different area is a major financial decision, so you and your spouse will certainly want to discuss all the aspects of relocation. • Will either of us work? Retirement no longer means the cessation of all work. You or your spouse – or perhaps you and your spouse – may want to use your skills and experience to do some consulting or even open your own business. Adding a source of earned income will almost certainly help your financial picture during

retirement, but if either you or your spouse is planning to do some work, you will want to be sure this activity doesn’t disrupt other plans that may be important to you, such as traveling. Also, any source of earned income during your retirement years may well affect important financial decisions, such as when to take Social Security and how much to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k). Again, it’s essential that you and your spouse be on the same page about any type of employment during retirement. • How will we spend our time? Aside from possibly doing some type of work during your retirement years, how else might you spend your time? Would you like to travel extensively? Or would you rather stick close to home and pursue your hobbies or volunteer? These don’t have to be eitheror decisions – hopefully, you’ll be able to explore many pursuits during your retirement. Keep in mind, though, that there will be different costs for these various activities, so you and your spouse may need to prioritize your choices to ensure they fit in to your overall financial strategies. As you can see, you and your spouse will have some key decisions about the financial aspects of your retirement. However, with some careful planning, you can make the moves that can help you work toward your common retirement vision. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I knew I would have to go through the buyer’s inspection when I accepted this contract, but now I am told that FHA has to inspect my home and that the repairs they require must be completed in order for the buyer to get their loan. I am not happy about this. Is this correct? Answer: First of all, congratulations on getting an accepted offer on your home. In many markets, that is not easy to do. But that does not mean that the deal will close. Contracts have contingencies that must be satisfied in order for a closing to take place. Examples: contingent on your buyer getting a loan; contingent on a satisfactory home inspection; contingent on your home appraising to at least the purchase price, etc. If you have a buyer who is obtaining FHA financing, your deal is also contingent on you completing the repairs required by the FHA inspector/appraiser. The FHA inspector is also an appraiser sent to determine the value of the home and look for significant deficiencies according to FHA criteria such as obvious mold

growth, chipped paint on windows older than 1978, broken glass, lack of GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or safety outlet) by sinks, etc. If they find defects then they will require repairs which they will reinspect, to ensure the repairs were made correctly. These required repairs are usually minor if the homeowner has kept their home in good shape. You are not required to do these repairs. You may say “No” and look for another buyer that is obtaining conventional financing or paying cash. The problem is that in many markets, the vast majority of qualified buyers are using FHA financing. The smart move would be for you to do the repairs and enjoy your check at closing. The Annual Volunteer Luncheon took place at Avalon Manor in Merrillville, prompting a semi-formal dress code and a light-hearted atmosphere. The event was hosted by Volunteer Manager and event coordinator, Joan Vith. Vith said the event is a way to recognize the hard work the volunteers put in every day at Meals on Wheels. Last year, the volunteers saved the organization $270,000. “They are saving us,” said Vith. “They have hearts bigger than mine. We can’t do this without them.” Meals on Wheels recognized over 50 volunteers at the luncheon, including Debbie Tylka, a volunteer at the office of MOW and event planning committee member. Tylka is on her second year at MOW and was one of the recipients of the Bronze Presidential Service Award, which honors someone with over one hundred hours of service. “I like looking at people’s faces,” she said when referring to her favorite part of the event. “Even when they leave, they’re happy. I think people like to be recognized.” MOW operates with 650 volunteers from around the region, an outstanding difference from the three volunteers the organization started with in 1977 when it first began. The development of the organization was shared with the guests by Executive Director Sandra Noe, who related the growth of Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana to the growth of a tree. Each guest received a small bag of M&M’s to symbolize seeds. Noe instructed the guests to eat the seeds of volunteerism and continue to grow MOW’s tree of life from within. “I feel like I feel every day— blessed,” Noe said. “I’m blessed to be able to see the difference each volunteer makes with our clients.” Noe said the event is just a small thank you to the volunteers at Meals on Wheels. She said she enjoys seeing everyone come together for a cause they are all passionate about. “They get their recognition every day,” she said. “It’s a swelling in their soul when they hand our clients their meals. The awards are not important.” For more information on how you can make a difference with Meals on Wheels, contact the organization at 219-7563663 or visit their northwest Indiana location at 8446 Virginia Street, Merrillville Ind.

A Court of Thorns and Roses By Sarah J. Maas Feyre was out hunting for food for her family. After her father’s injury, it fell on her alone to support the family. One night she came home with an enormous wolf pelt. She knew that something was different about this kill, but she pushed it out of her mind and focused on the money that would feed them for a while. Could this have possibly been a faerie in animal form? It is forbidden for a human to kill a faerie and vice versa. Feyre tried to put it out of her mind until one night when a man with a mask burst through the door of their small home. The man, full of anger, tells Feyre and her family that the wolf she killed was actually a faerie and now she must return with him to the faerie realm and stay there forever. Feyre accepts her sentence. Feyre did not know what to expect from the faerie world. The man who took her was named Tamlin. Tamlin was the High Lord of the Spring Court, a place full of beautiful flowers and bright green landscapes that seemed to go on forever. Despite the

fact that the wolf she killed was one of Tamlin’s best friends, Feyre was not to be a prisoner. She was allowed to come and go as she pleased, but could never return to the mortal land. The longer she lived with Tamlin and the other faeries in his court, the more Feyre began to feel at home. In fact, her friendship with Lucien, Tamlin’s best friend, grew more and more each day. The biggest surprise to Feyre was that her repulsion toward her kidnapper started to transform into attraction. Slowly Feyre became to learn a dark truth that put everyone in the faerie world, including Feyre at risk. A being named Amarantha had stolen power from several of the High Fey, including Tamlin. As the danger grows closer, Feyre realizes how she is a crucial part in the future of both the faerie and mortal realms. A Court of Thorns and Roses begins like a retelling of “Beauty and the Beast,” but slowly takes on a life of its own. The book takes some time to get moving, but it will grab you as the story moves forward. Be sure to look for more books in this series.

The Garden Club of South Holland is holding an additional Fundraiser this year by selling Rain Barrels. A few years ago, South Holland did offer these barrels for free, but the program was short lived and is no longer active. Now, in cooperation with the same company that offers the rain barrels to Cook County’s Metropolitan Water Reclamation Department, the Garden Club is now offering them for a limited time. The rain barrels are $55 each. They are 55 gallon drums and are available in four colors. The barrels are pre-drilled, ready for set up. A mosquito/leaf debris screen, overflow hose, spigot, T-shape overflow to daisy chain barrels are included inside the barrel upon delivery. The barrels will be delivered to the Garden Club and available for pick on the day of the Club’s annual Plant Sale. The plant sale and rain barrel pick up is on May 12th, the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The Garden Club will have glorious wave petunia hanging baskets available for sale, as well as hard to find annuals, and perennials from the gardens of club members. The Plant sale and rain barrel pick up will occur at the American Legion Hall, 443 E. 157th Street between 10am to 3pm. Order and pay online at www.rainbarrel.ca/GardenClub. Local Congresswoman Addresses FLY Empowerment Conference

A host of girls and women attended the Second Annual First Love Yourself (FLY) Conference, held April 21 at Thornwood High School.

Maryam Muhammad (left, speaking to a Thornwood teacher) Congresswoman Robin Kelly (center, black jacket), was the guest speaker at Thornwood’s FLY event. She is surrounded after her presentation of “I Am Enough,” a movement which by some of the organizers and chairwomen of the conference. teaches self-acceptance and gratitude.

It was a day filled with motivation, education, and inspiration as more than 200 women and girls attended the Second Annual First Love Yourself (FLY) Women’s Empowerment Conference held April 21, at Thornwood High School. The guest speaker was Congresswoman Robin Kelly of the 2nd Congressional District. “Our attendance is excellent this year,” said Patti Brucki, a Librarian at Thornwood High School and one of the organizers of the event. “I have to say the support of Thornton Township and the Village of South Holland has been excellent. Pat Mahon’s support has been amazing. We had Congresswoman Robin Kelley here this morning, and last year Kim Foxx was with us. People want to come back and give back to the community, and that’s awesome.” The Women’s Empowerment Conference is designed to help young women and girls sort out their journey. The conference helps them to seek out role models, and provides an opportunity for young girls to build connectedness to their community. “When they meet someone who is accomplished who has been through similar experiences, it gives them a ladder; it gives them a pathway. It gives them the understanding, ‘This is what I need to do to invest in myself so that I can make a difference in the world.’ By coming here, they can build a network (of positive role models).” Congresswoman Kelly spoke to the need that women and

girls must have a stronger voice; they must be heard on all levels of government in order to bring about change. She said, “We have reached a moment in history where activism is going on all over the country. Women are speaking out on all levels of government … bring a chair to the table, because if you are not at the table, you will be on the menu,” she told a crowd of mostly young African-American and Latino women. Kelly also encouraged the audience to develop a sense of community engagement as a way to keep communities safer, particularly in the wake of continuous gun violence. “We need you. We need your voices because we cannot continue to lose generations of young people. In here, I see future mayors, engineers, and civil service people. It’s your democracy. Be involved.” “I think Congresswoman Kelly was awesome,” said Shatina Edwards, Founder of MEAN Girls Empowerment, an antibullying organization located in South Holland. “Basically the Congresswoman was encouraging our young ladies to go out there and embrace their creativity and to think outside of the box. She is encouraging them to pursue their dreams and their goals. They are our next generation. They’re going to be the next doctors, lawyers and civil rights leaders.” Empowerment sessions were held in various classrooms at Thornwood. Presenters included Jasmine Browley, Janis

When you look at yourself in the mirror, say: ‘I’ve done my best,’” she said. Dr. Nakia Hall, a former Thornwood graduate, addressed the audience at the end of the program. She reflected on Thornwood mentors who encouraged her do great things in life. AMERICAN LEGION POST 6 9 7 I N L A NSI NG SE E K S H E L P REFURBISHING WWII ARMY ANTI TANK GUN: Locals used to driving by 18255 Grant Street are used to seeing t he huge W W II A nti Tank “3” gun at the entrance of the Post. Recently it has been moved to The Veteran’s Garage for refurbishment. The historic militar y artiller y has been stationed at the post since 1948. It is on loan from the government (the US Army Donor Program) and maintenance is up to the A.L. Post 697 members. It needs to be refurbished as time has taken its toll. All volunteer members of The Veteran’s Garage (501-C-3) will meticulously bring it back to it’s former glor y--but that takes money. Ordinarily it would take between $20 and $25,000 to refurbish the gun. But the VG will do it for about $10,000.That is where we come in. The service men who run the post are seeking donations to help defray the cost of bringing back the gun. If you would like to help you can send donations to the American Legion, Post 697, 18255 Grant Street, Lansing, Il 60438 Call Ron Line 708-895-5689 for more information. You can donate on behalf of a former service member and have that member recognized on a permanent storyboard and plaque at the site as well as social media and local publications. ***

L A NSING’S 9TH A NNUA L COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY: Set for Saturday April 28th, 2018 starting at 10 a.m. to Noon. Thy Village has invited all local clubs, organizations and citizens who love Lansing to take part in the clean up this year! Residents can participate individually or in groups (which is fun!) and can pick out their own area or have one given to them. Garbage bags and gloves (limited amount) will be provided but if yo u already have gloves, by all means bring them. A BBQ lunch will be provided by First Church (on Ridge Road across from city hall) for all volunteers after the work is done. But, you must first register by calling Vivian at 708-895-7207 or online at w w w.v i l lageof la nsing.org. Event takes place rain or shine so dress for either. Its important that the Village has a head count for the lunch and also where to pick up the litter we all collect.

Nobody reads Frog and Toad like Miss Karen! She was parked in our lazy boy, two kids in her lap, Frog and Toad in her hands. “One day in summer Frog was not feeling well. Toad said, ‘Frog, you are looking quite green.’” At this point, I was drawn to the living room. “‘But I always look green,’ said Frog. ‘I am a frog.’ ‘Today you look very green even for a frog,’ said Toad. ‘Get into my bed and rest’”.* Now I was parked in a chair, engrossed in the story. You’re never too old for a good story. A good story engages your heart and imagination in formative ways. I have vivid childhood memories of stories others read and told me—especially Bible stories. We need to get back to reading and telling one another stories—the silly and the serious ones. That senior with a

treasure trove of personal stories to tell and no one to tell them to because everyone is too busy for her—we need to stop, sit down, set aside our devices and listen to her stories. We also need to step over distraction to give undivided attention to the child bursting to relay events from his day. Above all, we need to immerse ourselves in The Story. The Bible is two-thirds story. It’s the true story of the Creator who comes, in Christ, to reconcile his fallen world to himself. Find your place in that story. Call on Christ to hitch your story to his. Live in any other story line, and misery has the last word. Only his story line leads to the ‘happily ever after’ we long for.
