ELECTRICAL SERVICES Taft and Eisenhower students performed dance routines. The Chinelo Dance Troupe entertained the crowd. _______________________________ By Patricia Muhammad It was a festive evening filled with live entertainment, great food and fun as HOLA (Hispanic Outreach Leadership Association) and the Latino community celebrated the third annual community event on May 11th at Thornwood High School. Maria Gonzalez, Co-Chair of HOLA and District 205 Division Leader for Health and PE, coordinated this year’s event, along with Brett Fickes, Curriculum Chair for District 205, Patricia Malopsy-Fortier, Outlook Academy Coordinator, and Title I Director, Albert Holmes. “We have been doing HOLA events now for three years,” Gonzalez said. “HOLA is an outreach umbrella program under the TTTOP, which is like a multifaceted committee that includes all the school districts that feed into District 205. Tonight we are celebrating moms and we do it in several different ways. In the Latino culture, moms are very special because they are seen as the foundation of the family. We offer a platform for teenagers to celebrate their moms and we want to bring all the stakeholders together just to say thank you to all the moms.” Leticia Cruz, Ray Bank, and Annette Whittington were among District 205 Board Members who attended the event. John Arrington, District Administrator, Joseph Whittington, Second Ward Alderman in Harvey, and Principal Dennis Willis were also present. According to Gonzalez, she hopes to expand HOLA. She said, “We want to sit down with Alderman Shirley Drewinski to discuss HOLA’s initiatives, and we also will meet with SSC’s SOLES (Student Organization for Latino Empowerment & Success) to get them involved in what we are doing. Our goal is to meet each month to discuss having more educational workshops as an outreach for the whole community.”

Zory Martinez Jaen and Mariela G. Comacho Kimble made guest appearances, promoting Volume III of a co-written book by 26 Latina women titled Today’s Inspired Latina: Life Stories of Success in The Face of Adversity. Jackie Camacho-Ruiz is the principal author. Volume IV of the book will be presented May 24 from 6:00pm - 9:30pm at the Rolling Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. HOLA featured the very talented Mr. Luis Alfredo, who sang beautiful Mariachi ballads throughout the evening. Later in the program the famous Chinelo Dance Troupe entertained the crowd. Chinelo dancers originated in Morelos, Mexico, where they have been entertaining Latino families since the 19th century. Dancers are known for their elaborate dress, gloved hands, and up-tilted beards (Wikipedia). Other entertainment included District 151 (Taft and Eisenhower) third and fifth grade dancers, who gracefully performed charming dance routines. The program also hosted student bilingual readers, who read to the audience in both English and Spanish. Delicious Latino cuisine was prepared by Chef Fernando Carlos, who is a Master Chef for Sodexo. Sodexo prepares school lunches for District 205. Anthony Polomo, ELL (English Language Learning) Director for School District 151 for more than 25 years, said HOLA helps unite Latino parents with local schools. “HOLA is needed because it brings the community together. It lets them know that we are connected and lets the parents know that there is definitely a bridge between the elementary school and high schools. It gets the parents familiar with high school when their kids are ready to transition into high school.” As the program continued into the evening, Dr. Tawana Robinson

addressed the crowd of more than 200 guests. Robinson, an African-American Special Ed teacher at Thornwood, ran for State Representative on the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) platform. Known as the Dreamers’ Movement, DACA is an American immigration policy that allows some individuals who were brought to the United States illegally as children to receive a renewable twoyear deferred action from deportation in order to become eligible for a work permit in the U.S. (Wikipedia). In a five minute speech discussing DACA, Robinson said, “When parents migrate to the U.S. and bring children, they move here because America is seen as the land of opportunity and they are looking for better ways for their children; however, our current administration is trying to implement strong anti-immigration laws which advocate deportation.” According to the Pew Research Center, more than 690,000 immigrants are currently enrolled in DACA, however, under the Trump Administration, there have been plans to phase out the program. Research also shows that Mexico is by far the top country of origin for active DACA recipients (548,000), followed by El Salvador (25,900). “Community members need to contact their local elected officials to lobby for and support the Dream Act to be passed in order for large populations of undocumented immigrants in Illinois to gain access to academic and economic opportunities,” Robinson said. HOLA offered both children and adults an evening of culture and familyfun. Polomo added: “I like it (HOLA), because we are collaborating and bringing parents together within our communities as means to support the Latino community.”

Community Healthcare System athletic trainer Taylor Schoemake responded to an incident on Tuesday afternoon, May 8 at Lake Station Community School’s Edison Junior Senior High School in Lake Station, IN. During an AAU open gym at Edison High School, a young player collapsed. When Taylor was alerted of the medical emergency, she immediately responded, took control of the situation and began lifesaving measures utilizing CPR training and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) technology. Taylor was assisted by Lake Station Athletic Director Jason Hawkins, Lake Station Police Captain Brian Williams and Police Officer Daniel Perryman. Lake Station Fire Department responded to the school, assumed care and transported the player for definitive emergency care. “Due to Taylor’s incredible response and training, she saved a young adult’s life,” said Ms. Christine Pepa, Principal, Thomas A. Edison Jr. Sr. High School. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim’s chance of survival. Survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Community Healthcare System licensed athletic trainers provide preventative services, immediate care and therapeutic intervention for sports-related injuries and medical conditions. They serve local middle and high school athletes, Calumet College of St. Joseph and Purdue University Northwest students. Since athletic trainers are on-site at school sporting events, they can assess and evaluate injuries immediately and respond accordingly. Lake Station Community Schools recognized Taylor Schoemake and the other first responders during their regular school board meeting at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Hamilton Elementary School.

Apply for Minority Entrepreneurship Program The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced today that applications for the 2018 Advancing the Development of Minority Entrepreneurship (ADME) program are now open. Applications can be found online at www.illinois.gov/dceo and will be available until May 31, 2018. The ADME Program is designed to nurture a business-friendly environment that supports and facilitates small business, with a focus on minority populations, to assist and lead entrepreneurs in long-term economic success. ADME offers start-up companies an exceptional level of support from subject matter experts, business professionals, and non-profit organizations. Additionally, participants will gain access to an array of services, including assistance with a business plan, a one-on-one session with an attorney, a loan prequalification assessment for each borrower to assess loan readiness in advance of their completion of the program, and the opportunity to pitch their business to banks, investors and microlenders during a demo day.

Condos/Townhomes/ Duplexes For Rent

“In anticipation of our second cohort, the Department has hosted a number of ADME Business Workshops throughout the state,” said Derrick Champion, Deputy Director of the Office of Minority Economic Empowerment at DCEO. “These workshops have been met with great excitement and have been a great recruitment tool for the ADME 2018 Cohorts.” The Women’s Business Development Center, along with the Illinois Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) network will administer ADME’s curriculum through the Department and will help facilitate investment opportunities through the Advantage Illinois program. Additionally, several community partners will help facilitate the program including Accion, CIBC BANK, Chicago Urban League, and Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce. The first ADME cohorts were held in 2017 in Rockford, Chicago, and Peoria. The second year will continue to focus on minority communities, including women and veterans, in South Chicago, the Quad Cities and the Champaign region.

As summer approaches and boaters prepare to get on the water, the Indiana Department of Natural Resource reminds you to “Clean. Drain. Dry.” Cleaning, draining and drying your boat helps prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). AIS are non-native aquatic animals, plants, microorganisms and pathogens that can hurt native aquatic plants and wildlife, harming the environment, human health and businesses. They arrive in a variety of ways, including on trailers, on boat hulls and motors, on fishing gear and through the pet trade. “The best way for boaters to help protect our waters is by following the ‘Clean-Drain-Dry’ message,” said Eric Fischer, aquatic invasive species coordinator for the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife. • Clean: When leaving the water, clean all equipment that touched the water. This includes watercraft hulls, trailers, shoes, waders, life vests, engines and other gear. Remove all visible plants, algae, animals and mud. • Drain: Drain accumulated water from watercraft or gear, including live wells and transom wells, before leaving the ramp or public access point. • Dry: Once home, let all gear dry for five days or more before using it in a different body of water. Some of the worst aquatic invasive species in other states have yet to be found in Indiana, according to Fischer, and the state wants to keep it that way. Finally, remember that dumping bait or unwanted aquarium or terrarium pets can introduce invasive species to waterways. Dispose of all unused bait in a trash can instead of dumping it into the water or on the shore. “Your diligence will help ensure that the next generation of Hoosiers can experience the same water activities that you enjoy,” Fischer said. If you suspect you have found an aquatic invasive plant, fish, mollusk or crustacean, report it to the Division of Fish & Wildlife at dnr.IN.gov/6385.htm, through the Report IN app at eddmaps.org/indiana, or by calling the Invasive Species Hotline at 866-NO-EXOTIC (866-663-9684).

Free Fishing Days The final two Free Fishing Days for 2018 are June 2 and 3. On these special days, Indiana residents can fish public waters without needing a fishing license or a trout stamp. Free Fishing Days are prime opportunities for families to learn to fish because adults do not need a fishing license on those days, and children ages 17 and younger do not need a license on any day. A number of events will be held across the state. Information on Free Fishing Day events is at dnr.IN.gov/fishfree. Several Family Learn to Fish workshops are scheduled. Advance registration is required. Some of the workshops are already full, but others have spots available. More family fishing fun will happen at Washington Township Park in Avon, Patoka Lake in Birdseye, Lake Cottonwood in Edinburgh, Cobus Creek County Park in Elkhart, Trine State Recreation Area in Fremont, Freedom Park in Greenwood, Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, Brown County State Park in Nashville, St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend, Lake Waveland Park in Waveland, and Prophetstown State Park in West Lafayette. People interested in attending a Free Fishing Day event should contact the host property in advance because some activities require registration.

Hartsfield Village Rehabilitation Administrator Seydel Honored

Hartsfield Village Rehabilitation has announced that Administrator Susan Seydel is a recipient of the 2018 Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award, an honor from the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA). Nationally, 351 administrators in 45 states received the facility leadership award this year. Based on the premise that facility excellence is reflected in leadership excellence, the Eli Pick award recognizes the administrator of record who provided such leadership for the full 2017 calendar year. Eligibility for this award is based on three years of Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) survey data including health, fire safety and compliance surveys as well as top quartile performance on designated quality measures. Fewer than 11 percent of facilities nationwide qualify. “I am delighted and honored to receive the Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award on behalf of the rehabilitation center,” said Seydel. “The team at Hartsfield Village strives to provide the highest quality of care and services to our patients and residents. I am proud to lead this incredible group of people.” The experienced team of professionals at Hartsfield Village’s Rehabilitation Center helps patients recover from surgery, injury or serious illness. Hartsfield Village offers comprehensive rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech For sale: 1991 Cadillac Deville, 4dr. black, gray interior, extra clean. therapies, respiratory therapy, IV therapy, nutrition, and wound and pain management programs. Hartsfield Village’s post-acute rehabilitation program offers advanced technology and foremost rehabilitation techniques to help patients achieve maximum function and independence. The result is an outcomedriven environment that provides the most efficient and effective care. The Rehabilitation Center was chosen #1 Best in the Region this year by the Northwest Indiana’s Times newspaper readership. The Facility Leadership Award was first introduced in 2008 by the ACHCA’s former leader and member, the late Eli Pick. An executive director himself of a rehabilitation center for more than 30 years, Pick embodied excellence in care as an administrator. His memory continues to be honored each year through presentation of the award by the ACHCA at their annual awards luncheon that is part of the organization’s convocation and exposition. Founded in 1962, the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA) is the only professional association devoted solely to meeting the professional needs of today’s post-acute and aging services leaders. Focused on advancing leadership excellence, ACHCA provides professional education and certification to administrators from across the spectrum of long-term care. For more information about ACHCA, visit www.achca. org or send an email to membership@achca. org. Hartsfield Village is a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Munster. Residents live comfortably, receiving the services and amenities that are appropriate at the time, but as needs change, can conveniently transition to other levels of living: independent and assisted living apartments, a memory support unit, and a rehabilitation center. Hartsfield Village is part of Community Healthcare System and features the same high quality health services as found at Community Hospital, Munster; St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago; and St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart. Hartsfield Village Rehabilitation Center is located at 503 Otis Bowen Drive in Munster. Call 219-934-0590 for a tour or visit www. hartsfieldvillage.com for more information.

Dental Milestones for Children that Parents Need to Know

Just because most newborns don’t have teeth yet, it’s never too early for new parents to start a dental regimen for their babies. “Parents shouldn’t wait until teething starts to think about their babies’ dental health,” says orthodontist Dr. Jamie Reynolds, author of “World Class Smiles Made in Detroit” (www.AskDrReynolds.com). Reynolds says it is important for parents to give children a proper start if they are to enjoy a lifetime of good dental health. He offers these milestones for parents to keep in mind: During the pregnancy: A child’s dental care really starts before the child is born, Reynolds says. Baby teeth begin to form before birth, so pregnant women should make sure to eat a balanced, nutritious diet and should get an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals, he says. Mothers should have a complete dental exam and have any cavities or gum disease treated. After birth, but before teeth arrive: Before the baby’s teeth have even erupted, keep the baby’s mouth clean by wiping NEW IDEAL GARAGE DOOR SECTIONS 16 X 8 9 X 8 grey $700; 17 X 7 white $400. 708596-0600 or text 3 tier heavy duty scaffold tower 8” casters 3 planks $500 portable scaffold 48” $50 708-596-0600 call text For sale: Washer and dryer, $300; Kenmore lawnmower Craftsman 6-3/4HP selfpropelled w/bag; wheelchairk, with footrest, $100; lawnmower self-propl, $100; Elec. leafblower, $30; G e n e r a t o r, $ 1 2 5 ; e l e c . weekwacker, $30. 708-7152348 For sale: Stander for disable person; Core exercise equipment; Elliptical m ac h i n e; ver tic a l stair climber; position lift recliner chair. 708-477-1951 F o r s a l e : To r o 2 4 5 0 Snowblower, $200; Proform Tre a d m i l l $ 3 0 0 ; Pu l s e r 6000W Generator, $400. 708339-3266 2007 Evinrude E-tec 75 hp o u t b o a rd e n g i n e . down the gums twice a day with gauze or a moist washcloth after the baby’s last feeding. At about six months: Parents should start brushing their children’s baby’s teeth as soon as they come in, Reynolds says. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends using fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice on a child-sized toothbrush twice a day. At age 3: By age 3, most children have a full set of baby teeth—20 of them—at which point the ADA recommends upping the amount of toothpaste from the size of a grain of rice to the size of a pea. Around age 6: Most children should be able to brush on their own by age 6. At this point, children can start using an adult-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste when they brush, Reynolds says. Children should have their teeth flossed as soon as two teeth are touching. Children typically can floss on their own starting at about 7 years old. The first dental visit: The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends an initial visit to the dentist when the

first tooth erupts, or no later than baby’s first birthday. From then on, parents should make twice yearly visits. When children should see an orthodontist: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends all children see an orthodontist by the age of 7. Even though it may sound early, some issues can be addressed more quickly when caught early, such as issues with the growth of the jaw bone, remaining baby teeth, impacted teeth, the number of teeth growing in, and more, Reynolds says. Fortunately, he says, the majority of children this age will not need treatment. “One of the most important things parents can do is model good oral health behavior so children can see how seriously their parents take care of their oral hygiene,” Reynolds says. “It’s important that children see their parents brush and floss, avoid sugary snacks, and make regular visits to the dentist.” Dr. Jamie Reynolds (www.AskDrReynolds.com) attended the University of Michigan for both his undergraduate education and dental studies and did his orthodontic residency at the University of Detroit-Mercy.

Community Hospital Receives Perinatal Care Certification from Joint Commission

Community Hospital’s Family Birthing Center is among a handful of facilities in Indiana to earn Perinatal Care Certification from The Joint Commission. The voluntary certification program recognizes Joint Commission accredited hospitals for their commitment to achieving integrated coordinated and patient-centered care for mothers and their newborns. “Achieving Perinatal Care Certification recognizes an organization’s commitment to healthy mothers and healthy babies,” said Patrick Phelan, executive director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission. “The certification gives providers an unparalleled advantage when it comes to preparing mothers for labor and delivery, while also being able to help them if complications arise.” Community Hospital underwent a rigorous onsite review April 16 and 17 to assess compliance with certification standards for perinatal care. During the review, Joint Commission experts completed an independent evaluation of Community Hospital’s perinatal healthcare services. These services include labor and delivery, mother-baby care and neonatal care. In order to achieve certification, in addition to meeting and exceeding Joint Commission core measures, Community Hospital has demonstrated the ability to provide: • Integrated, coordinated patientcentered care that starts with prenatal and continues through postpartum care; • Early identification of high-risk pregnancies and births; • Management of mother and newborn risks at a level corresponding to the program’s capabilities; and • Available patient education and FREE--regulation basketball hoop and backboard, must remove. 708-448-5672

information about perinatal care services. “By working together to achieve this certification, we have shown that we are focused on ongoing qualityimprovement processes that ultimately improve care for mothers and their newborns,” said Lou Molina, chief executive officer. “Our physicians, healthcare professionals and staff continue to provide high-quality care to all of our patients, especially to the women who entrust us with their care and their infants before, during and after birth.” “Where an expectant mother chooses to have her baby and who she chooses for her physician is one of the most important decisions a new mom can make,” said Ronda McKay, chief nursing officer and vice president Patient Care Services. “Situations can change. You need to pick the place and the doctor that can manage those changes and deliver the best outcome. When you have a comprehensive program that is in your community such as the Community Hospital Family Birthing Center, it strengthens the family’s support system. Being able to stay close to home really helps,” she said. Community Hospital delivers the most babies in Northwest Indiana, making the hospital the most experienced in the area and one of the leading facilities in the state for newborn care. “We provide everything under one roof and that is what sets us apart from other programs,” said Carla Meyer, director of Patient Care Services. “We are truly prepared for the expected and the unexpected—all the issues that a mother and her baby could experience.” Hospitals such as Community Hospital that achieve Joint Commission

Speaking Of Seniors

A Phone Call And a Letter WOODROW WILCOX On April 18, 2018, I got a phone call from a medical biller with some good news for a client who lives in Valparaiso, Indiana. Then, I wrote a letter to the client to give her the news that she DID NOT OWE $526. Following is part of my letter to the client. You will understand what work I do for our clients better after you read it. “Today, I received a phone call from the firm that sent you the bill for $526. The assistant to the manager that I know at the firm called me to tell me that the bill was sent because no Medicare information was provided when the firm was told to bill you. Since then, that firm got key Medicare billing information and has sent the bill to Medicare. “After Medicare reviews and rules on the claim, it will send its ruling to your insurance company. As long as you did not get some medical service that Medicare does not cover, the entire bill should be paid because you have a Plan F Medicare supplement policy through this agency. Thus, I believe we saved you $526 with our work and our letter to the biller. “Only if you got a medical service that Medicare does not cover should you get any balance bill. “Please, tell others that you use an insurance agency that ‘goes the extra mile’ for its senior citizen clients by helping with medical billing problems such as yours without charging a cent.” Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved senior citizen clients over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems.com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

certification are continually striving to improve on the following quality goals that impact mother and baby’s health and wellbeing: · Reducing infant mortality rates · Reducing maternal complications · Reducing unnecessary induction of labor · Reducing elective deliveries that may lead to an increase in neonatal intensive care unit admission rates · Reducing delivery complications · Reducing prematurity rates that can lead to infant mortality · Reducing costs associated with lengthy hospitals stays due to pregnancyrelated complications “This is not a required, but a voluntary certification program,” said Meyer. “We invited the Joint Commission to come here and evaluate our processes. Our team was proud of the work that had already been done to integrate our services on labor and delivery, motherbaby care and the NICU. This program provided an opportunity for us to reexamine our policies, procedures and practices, and in doing so it became clear that we could move from a strong, patient-centered care program to one that is outstanding.” Established in 2015, Perinatal Care Certification is awarded for a two-year period to Joint Commission-accredited hospitals. Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 21,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. An independent, nonprofit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare. Thornton Township Government is Needed Thornton Township Spokesman and Public and Community Relations Manager Ernst Lamothe, Jr., in a radio interview with WJOB 1230AM/104.7FM, discussed the reason why Township government is important to constituents. Mr. Lamothe said, “Township government serves as a safety net for local communities.” Mr. Lamothe told listeners that “Thornton Township provides services in the following areas: township hires teenagers giving them their first opportunity for employment; secondly, the township operates a food pantry in Harvey, Illinois where 1,000 families are served every month; the township operates a general assistance program helping 200 or more families make the transition to full and part-time employment; and the township provides senior lawn care programs and special services for people with disabilities.” Thornton Township is the largest township in Illinois, with 17 cities and approximately 183,000 residents. Mr. Lamothe further stated, “Our Supervisor President Zuccarelli does not have a problem with crossing state lines. He believes in helping others.” Mr. Frank M. Zuccarelli has been the President of Thornton Township since April 1993. Mr. Zuccarelli heads up a fourmember Board of Trustees. Mr. Lamothe said, “Township government is very critical to local communities. Currently he administers and executes Public Relations, marketing and social media programs for Thornton Township, designed to create outreach to local communities.

Calumet Avenue Closure in Hammond The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that U.S. 41 (Calumet Avenue) is closed in Hammond between Michigan Street and Sibley Street. This is the site of a bridge project that has been underway since early April with lane closures in place. Thursday, crews identified a pavement concern that needs to be addressed, requiring a complete closure at this location. It is possible this closure could last through the end of May. Remembrance for Veterans May 28 The public is invited to take part in the activities planned at the Edward P. Robinson Community Veterans Memorial Park to honor the men and women of our nation’s armed forces lost in combat, with special recognition for the citizens of Munster. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 28, Munster VFW Post 2697 will conduct a ceremony along with American Legion Post 16 at the Munster park located at 9710 Calumet Avenue. The Munster High School Band will perform during the ceremony. The post will fire a traditional 21-gun salute with their ceremonial cannon beginning at noon. The Memorial Day tradition began in 1868 by The Grand Army of the Republic “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country…with services and testimonials of respect….” The 6.5 acre memorial has become a major tourist attraction, and commemorates the sacrifices and achievements of veterans of major military conflicts that shaped the 20th Century. The idea for the memorial was developed in the late 1990s when a group of local veterans came together to talk about creating a place that honors the nation’s war heroes. The final design encompasses three main goals: to remember, to educate, and to challenge. The park is located just 2.5 miles south of I80/94 on the west side of Calumet Avenue, just north of Sheffield Ave. It is open dawn-to-dusk and the Memorial Day activities will be held rain or shine. There is no charge to visit the park. To learn more, visit www.CommunityVeteransMemorial.org. Found: About 5-17, “Gold” necklace with “lavalier”. Please call me to identify. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My wife and I are selling our home and now my wife has changed her mind about moving. We have a signed sales contract, with earnest money, between us and the buyer. Is there any way to back out of the sale? Answer: To start, sales agreements can fall through due to reasons of financing, condition, title, etc, so the deal could still fall through. However, if the buyer has a valid purchase agreement accepted by both you and your wife, and it sounds like they do, then you are expected to work in good faith to fulfill your end of the agreement. It may be that the buyer would accept a cash buyout to discontinue the purchase. However, you need to consider that the Brokers involved have found a ready, willing and able buyer and are likely to be entitled to a commission for their work. If you simply refuse to complete the transaction, then the buyers may sue for damages as well as “specific performance,” a requirement to complete the sale. We

suggest that you speak to an attorney. Question: I recently sold my home. The buyers have applied for a loan, but the Broker refuses to give me a copy of the appraisal. As the seller, shouldn’t I get a copy? Answer: No. The appraisal was ordered by the lender and paid for by the borrowers. As long as the loan is approved, it’s none of your business. However, if the appraisal comes in below the sales price and the purchaser asks you for a price reduction, you would then be on good grounds to ask for a copy. Harvey Pension Crisis Eases On April 10, the City of Harvey announced it would be laying off 40 employees, including nearly half of its police and fire staff, due to a state law that intercepts payments from municipalities who do not make their obligated pension payments. Since then, State Senator Napoleon Harris III (D-Harvey) has been working to find a way to make this process more manageable for distressed municipalities like Harvey. “It’s unfair for the public safety of the people of Harvey to be put at risk because of a state law that requires much more than the municipality can handle,” Harris said. “I am going to continue working on this issue because I want to ensure that the people of Harvey aren’t being further penalized for living in a poor community.” Harris recently amended Senate Bill 370 to give distressed municipalities until fiscal Wa n t e d - - r i d i n g l a w n mower in great condition only 219-730-3370 Wanted Apple iPhone SE, 5, any 6 or better. year 2020 before the Comptroller’s office can enforce its intercept power. The proposal also gradually increases the percentage of the delinquent payments the Comptroller can intercept by the following: · In fiscal year 2020, one fourth of the total amount of any payment of State funds to the municipality; · In fiscal year 2021, one half of the total amount of any payments of State funds to the municipality; · In fiscal year, 2022, three fourths of the total amount of any payments of State funds to the municipality; · In fiscal year 2023 and each year thereafter, the total amount of any payments of State funds to the municipality. The legislation was approved by the Senate Licensed Activities and Pensions Committee on Wednesday.

What Should You Look for in an Annual Financial Review? BOB KRYGSHELD

ARLO KALLEMEYN Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tied the knot last Saturday May 19. It was a good wedding made for TV— lots of beautiful dresses, hats, suits and flowers. There was a distinctive American flavor to the festivities including a Gospel Choir singing ‘Stand By Me’ and a message from Bishop Michael Curry that will have the Brits talking for quite a long time. Meghan is no stranger to setting her mark on the world. You probably are aware that her father is white, and her mother is African-American. When she was in 7th grade her dad taught her a lesson she never forgot. During her English class the teacher passed out a census form with boxes to check for ethnicity. There was white, black, Hispanic or Asian—and the students were only allowed to choose one. The teacher told Meghan to choose white, and to pass her paper in. Meghan said she couldn’t bear the thought of how sad that would make her mom. She left the page blank and didn’t check any box. When she got home and told her dad what had happened, he “said the words that always stayed with me,” she recalled. Her dad told her, “If that happens again, you draw your own box.” As there are graduations being held in the next few weeks, students are going out into the world to make their mark. Meghan Markle’s dad would probably give recent graduates—and us—the same advice he gave his daughter. You have a special calling that no one else has. It’s up to you to fulfill that calling—and sometimes it’s important to “draw your own box.” Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of weddings and graduations.

Given the complexities of the investment world, you might consider working with a financial professional to help you move toward your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. You’ll want to establish good communication with whomever you choose, and you should meet in person at least once a year to discuss your situation. At these annual reviews, you’ll want to cover a variety of topics, including these: • Your portfolio’s progress. Obviously, you will want to discuss how well your investments are doing. Of course, you can follow their performance by reviewing your investment statements and online information, but at your annual meeting, your financial professional can sum up the past year’s results, highlight areas that have done well or lagged, and show you how closely your portfolio is tracking the results you need to achieve your long-term goals. • Your investment mix. stocks, bonds, government securities and so on – helps determine your success as an investor. But in looking at the various investments in your portfolio, you’ll want to go beyond individual gains and losses to see if your overall mix is still appropriate for your needs. For example, is the ratio of stocks to bonds still suitable for your risk tolerance? Over time, and sometimes without you taking any action, this ratio can shift, as often happens when stocks appreciate so much that they now take up a larger percentage of your portfolio than you intended—with a correspondingly higher risk level. If these unexpected movements occur, your financial professional may recommend you rebalance your portfolio to align it

more closely with your goals and risk tolerance. • Changes in your family situation. A lot can happen in a single year. You could have gotten married, divorced, added a child to your family or moved – the list can go on and on. And some, if not all, of these moves could certainly involve your financial and investment pictures, so it’s important to discuss them with your financial professional. • Changes in your goals. Since your last annual review, you may have decided to change some of your long-term goals. Perhaps you no longer want to retire early, or you’ve ruled out that vacation home. In any case, these choices may well affect your investment strategies, so it’s wise to discuss them. • Changes in the investment environment. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to establish a long-term investment strategy based on your individual goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, and stick with this basic strategy regardless of the movements of the financial markets or changes in the economy. Still, this doesn’t mean you should never adjust your portfolio in response to external forces. For instance, if interest rates were to rise steadily over a year’s time, you might want to consider some changes to your fixedincome investments, such as bonds, whose value will be affected by rising rates. These aren’t the only elements you may want to bring up in your yearly review with your financial professional – but they can prove to be quite helpful as you chart your course toward the future. Carrie Carlson, Thornridge IB Visual Arts teacher (left, with board members and students), was recognized along with her class.

By Patricia Muhammad The District 205 School Board held its May 9 meeting, attended by more than 85 community residents, parents, and teachers, who gathered inside Thornwood’s cafeteria. One of the highlights of the meeting was the recognition and acknowledgment of Outlook Academy Coordinator, Patricia Malopsy-Fortier, who received the South Cook Principal of the Year Award from the Illinois Principal Association, given by Dr. Bill Truesdale of Chicago State University. “Outlook (Academy) is not just me, but Outlook is everybody in this district and there are so many people that has made this possible … I thank those teachers for asking the question of ‘what can I do’? I thank those who continue to be advocates for our students,” said Fortier during her recognition speech. Housed at Chicago State University and established in 2016 by District 205 Board of Education, Outlook Academy assists students, ages 17-22, who did not complete the necessary requirements to finish high school. Students attending Outlook Academy are dually enrolled as students of District 205 and CSU, according to public documents. Outlook Academy’s recognized Ms. Nikita Coleman, as the May staff member of the month. Coleman coordinates diverse learning at the academy. Also, student of the Month is Jatarek Brown. The 6:30 p.m. meeting was called to order by School Board President, Ms.

with needed school supplies. Several students from Carlson’s class were acknowledged with medals given by school board members. “We just started Visual Arts at the IB level at Thornridge High School. Thank you so much for supporting IB in general and specifically, Visual Arts. It’s a phenomenal program, very diverse. There’s just a lot to it that’s terrific for students to be visually literate. It’s a lot of critique, problem-solving and thinking things through, justifying, comparing, contrasting and comparing. We study different genre, across different ages we’re just getting into it,” Carlson said. Under Carlson’s instruction, students competed in both regional and complex art exhibitions, leading them to win third place. Jalin Gordon, one of Carson’s art students spoke to board members. “Thank you for supporting the IB Visual Arts. It allows me to express myself and it expands my creativity. We do things in a positive way and we make it our own. All we could ever ask for is to be ourselves,” he said. Other students in Carlson’s class who thanked District Board Members included Cynthia Morales, Evelyne Espinoza Reyes, and Angel Williams. The first half of the May school board meeting was adjourned after brief comments were offered by Superintendent Swopes. After the adjournment, a closed meeting was held among district members.

In the South Suburbs of Chicago, as well as many other parts of the country, the lender’s appraisal becomes the litmus test to the price negotiated between the buyer and the seller. Fair market price is normally determined when a seller and a buyer who aren’t under duress negotiate and agree on a contract price for the sale of a property. If the buyer has cash and doesn’t need a lender, then that’s it. In most cases, an appraisal isn’t done at this point, because the buyer and seller agree on the value of the property. If the buyer does need a lender, as most do, then the bank has to have a way to document the market value. That’s where the appraisal comes in. An appraisal is one person’s opinion of what a mortgage lender should be prepared to lend on a particular property, based on the recent history of sales of similar properties. What can you do if you have an appraisal issue? 1. The Realtor can prepare and file an appeal through the lender. That means the parties submit additional information and request that the appraiser reconsider the value. Appraisers are human too and sometimes miss something or make a mistake just like everyone else. 2. The buyer and the seller can agree to reduce the sale price to

the appraised value. 3. The buyer can elect to come up with additional down payment money and pay the difference at the closing table. 4. The buyer can walk away from the deal and get their earnest money back. The contract should have an appraisal contingency, and if the buyer is getting an FHA or VA loan, that appraisal contingency covers the buyer all the way to closing regardless of any other terms in the contract. If the house doesn’t appraise, the buyer gets their earnest money back. But they still lose the money they have invested in inspections and the cost of the appraisal itself. In conclusion, the best way to handle an appraisal issue is to avoid one! Both buyers and sellers should work with experienced Realtors. Real estate agents that work daily in the local housing market can counsel both buyers and sellers about realistic home values. Blockchain is Coming, and It Will Transform Our World Maybe you know all there is to know about blockchain technology. Maybe you know nothing. Either way, in the near future blockchain could change how you do business in numerous ways, from energy use to booking a hotel. “Right now, if people think about blockchain at all they probably only think of its connection to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and DigiByte,” says Andi Simon, a corporate anthropologist and author of On the Brink: A Fresh Lens to Take Your Business to New Heights (www.andisimon. com). “But the blockchain technology is really what people should be excited about.” Blockchain was introduced in 2009 to serve as a database that could track and keep secure large volumes of transactions in the cryptocurrency world. Once data is recorded, it can’t be changed without the approval of most network participants. “This process supposedly creates a fraud-proof system and essentially authenticates the information that’s exchanged,”

Simon says. That’s why it has potential to be used in numerous ways, she says, such as: Government services and economic development. Any communities wondering how they can take advantage of blockchain in a big way could look to Zug, Switzerland, for advice. The city of 30,000 has become a leader in accepting cryptocurrency and encouraging blockchain startups to call Zug home, Simon says. Two years ago, Zug became the first place in the world to accept cryptocurrencies for some public services, and residents can get blockchain-based digital identities. Energy. Solar energy and blockchain aren’t the strange bedfellows you might imagine. Simon points to Brooklyn, NY, where a project called Brooklyn Microgrid created a peerto-peer energy-trading system that is built on blockchain. Essentially, neighbors purchase power generated by their neighbors’ solar panels, allowing them to bypass utilities companies. Blockchain technology validates and records the transactions.

Tourism. The tourism industry could be disrupted in a number of ways as blockchain begins to allow travelers to take greater control over all their travel planning. As an example, Simon says Dubai, which seeks to become an entirely blockchain city, is making moves to become a leader in blockchain tourism. Dubai Tourism recently announced a blockchain-enabled marketplace to connect potential customers directly to hotels and tourism operators. Financial Services. Banks and financial institutions could become superfluous as more people begin to use blockchain technology to send digital assets securely. “From the customer’s standpoint, that could mean an end to excessive interest rates and middleman fees as people make transactions directly,” Simon says. “People might not need banks for such things as making loans or providing credit.” “Business owners don’t need to worry about incorporating blockchain platforms right away,” she says. “But they do need to be aware of what’s happening out there so they are prepared for how technology could change their businesses in the future.”

YOU MEET THE NICEST PEOPLE AT THE LANSING POST OFFICE: Saturday May 19th was National Poppy Day and selling poppies on behalf of American Legion Post 697 was Fred Petersen, a 29-year veteran of that organization. Pictured with Fred are Diane Garner of Lansing a nd Esker Nichols of Ly nwood. T he poppies are sold for and the proceeds go toward Veteran’s programs. ***

RICHARD ZEKVELD Wind is fascinating. You can’t see it. You can only see its impact on everything it touches. This reminds me of a poem from my childhood: Who has seen the wind? Neither you nor I: But when the trees bow down their heads, The wind is passing by. -Christina Rossetti Hurricanes and tornadoes unleash destructive power, evoking in us fear and fascination. Bone-chilling winter winds cut right through us. A gentle spring breeze warms our hearts and habitat, transforming the landscape in concert with the sun. A mischievous gust sends us sprinting after an airborne document to the delight of onlookers. Jesus compares the transforming power of the Holy Spirit to the wind. “The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit”

(John 3:8). Last Sunday was Pentecost. On Pentecost, Christians celebrate the Holy Spirit’s coming to Jesus’ followers. A “sound like a mighty rushing wind” accompanied the coming of the Spirit (Acts 2:2). Like the wind, the Spirit comes, goes and does as he pleases. He accomplishes God’s life-giving purposes in people’s lives, sovereign and free from human manipulation. Like the wind, his unseen presence and power are known by their transforming impact on all they touch. Only the Holy Spirit can awaken us to trust and turn our lives over to Jesus. Only the Spirit can stoke in us uncommon, Christ-like love for those who hurt and hate us. Only the Spirit can produce in us the conviction and courage to say ‘No’ to self and ‘Yes’ to Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to do his work in you and others too. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church

The dinners had been suspended of late due to the fact that John had a knee replacement. He has healed enough so he could run one more spring dinner and soon will be going under the knife to fix the other knee. Asked when we m ig ht ex pect t he nex t spag het t i dinner, the genial firefighter/chef noted, “probably October or so. I’l l let you know.” The dinners are very popular with both the Parish of St. Columba (Chicago Hegew isch)and the nearby neighbors who drop in for dinner. The secret sauce (gravy) is heavenly! ***

The group of 25 tractors took a break Saturday May 19th, 2018 when N 2 N found them. A lovely departure from the hustle and bustle of city and suburban life to be sure. All around us at that point was nothing but fertile farm land, the stuff that the Midwest is well-known for and Illinois especially. It is very reassuring when so much of the news is very dismal to go out into the hinterlands and experience this great land of ours. ***
