St. Catherine Hospital Nurse Receives Excellence Award

SOUTH HOLLAND MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION

Stay Connected ELDER PHYLLIS NEUMAN BROWN, FREE SPIRIT MINISTERIAL WORSHIP CENTER connected to the one element in life that our devices cannot give us and that is our relationship with God. A technological device cannot connect you with a spiritual God. A relationship with God is established and maintained through prayer and meditation on the Word of God. Psalms 145:18 states that the Lord is near to all that call on Him, to all that call on Him in truth. As truthful as it may seem that we are at a loss without our devices, we must remember that we are at a greater loss if we are not connected with God. He is our Source. The devices are just resources of convenience. Each day, let us remember to make the conscious decision to connect with the Lord before we connect with our devices. The God connection will give you focus and clarity, strengthen your soul, and enhance your life. So, do not forget to STAY CONNECTED!

These days technology is a vital and powerful component of our everyday lives. We use it to communicate, schedule, research, purchase, sell, date, etc. We consistently and constantly stay connected with our technological devices, so we can navigate through our daily routines with ease and efficiency. Many of us know this to be true because we have experienced leaving or misplacing our phones or having an inoperable phone, laptop or iPad that led us to feel helpless and frustrated because we could not connect with our “source.” Nothing seemed to work out until we were able to reconnect with our devices. In our life as a Christian, we need to value our source of strength, life and help even more than we value and depend on our devices. Hebrews 4:8 reminds us to draw near to God and He would draw near to us. We need to remember to stay

Presenting the Nursing Excellence Award to Amanda Arrendondo (center) are vice president Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer Paula Swenson and chief executive officer Leo Correa.

_______________________________

St. Catherine Hospital celebrated their healthcare professionals’ talents of leadership, skill and compassionate care during National Nurses Week through a series of special events. Sixteen nurses received recognition at the Nursing Excellence Awards Tea. Amanda Arredondo, RN, was selected from that group to receive the 2018 Nursing/Caregiver Excellence Award. “Nursing is a respected, highly-rated profession,” said Paula Swenson, vice president Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. “As medical technology has expanded, so too have the roles of nurses over the years. Our nurses do amazing things each and every day. It’s important to recognize them for their outstanding contributions to provide extraordinary care to our patients.” Arredondo, a critical care nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for six years, began her healthcare career as a nurse fellow at St. Catherine Hospital. Described as friendly, kind, energetic and trustworthy, Arredondo has excelled in her willingness to learn and grow in her career. “She takes charge of the unit when necessary and is always willing to help her coworkers,” said ICU charge nurse Janee Babbit. “Amanda is a wonderful patient advocate who provides emotional support to patient families and their loved ones,” Swenson said. “She exemplifies all of the qualities an ICU nurse should have.”

Noll Graduate Plans to Attend Indiana University

TOM BERG

Payton Hewlett, of Hammond, who graduated from Bishop Noll on May 31, said high school went by quickly but he values everything he experienced. The athlete who played varsity football, basketball and track was also vice president of BNI’s National Honor Society chapter and a member of the Spell Bowl Team. In addition, he is one of Noll’s Graduates with Distinction, those who earn a 4.0 or above cumulative GPA. He plans to attend Indiana University in

Electrical Kingfishers often give away their location with their loud, rattling call. Photo by Tom Berg. -----------------------------------------------

f you spend much time along our lakes and waterways during the warm-weather months, you will likely see one of my favorite birds: the belted kingfisher. These birds are slightly larger than a robin, and they are an interesting blue-gray color above with a white belly and a white ring around their neck. Males have a blue band across the chest and females have a blue and rust-colored band on their chest. They all have a long, pointed black bill. Kingfishers spend most of their time alone, sitting on a bare branch overhanging shallow water where they might find minnows or other small fish. As their name implies, fish make up the bulk of their diet, and they are very adept at diving head-first into the water and catching minnows. It is not unusual to see kingfishers diving and catching minnows one after another, especially in clear, shallow

water. In addition to small fish, kingfishers also eat crayfish, snails, insects, frogs and even small water snakes. During mating season, belted kingfishers find a mate and excavate a nest in soft earthen banks near the water. Vertical banks are preferred since the sheer walls deter predators. Most nest tunnels are three to six feet deep, and the tunnel always runs slightly uphill to keep water out. One interesting fact about belted kingfishers is that the baby birds have acids in their stomachs that help them digest fish bones, fish scales, crayfish shells and even mollusk shells. By the time the young birds fledge, however, the acids are gone and they start regurgitating pellets, similar to owls. But kingfisher pellets contain fish bones, not mouse bones!

Bloomington, but looks forward to spending the summer with friends before splitting up for college. “I have made strong relationships with people, and I hope to keep those people close to me for the rest of my life. I’ve learned things in my high school career that I will carry with me forever. I’m a proud Bishop Noll Alumni.” Hewlett said when he came to Bishop Noll as a freshman, he knew only one other student, as he was one of a small percentage of students who came from public school. However, it wasn’t long before he made friends and started reaching for success. “I think attending BNI after going to public school enabled me to be more successful in high school because there were less distractions and most of my classmates are high achievers, which pushed me to always be at my best,” he said. “Going to a Catholic school also made me more spiritual and closer to God, which is something I value greatly, and hope to continue to build on.” Hewlett said he has many good memories of Noll, but his first dunk in a varsity game is among the best. “It was a home game against Highland and it was very intense. When I dunked it, I could feel the energy of my teammates and the crowd go up instantly. It was a great experience.”

Speaking Of Seniors

Beware the Booth at the Big Box Store! WOODROW WILCOX I heard that a big box store plans to make money on insurance during the upcoming open enrollment season starting this fall. The big box store will rent booth space to insurance agents to meet people at the store and help them select Medicare related or Obamacare related insurance policies. I asked the person who told me this, “How will the agent and the big box store protect the personal identification information of the people who use the insurance agent at the booth in the big box store?” Based on the answer that I got, I don’t believe it is a good idea to give your private information about the medicines that you take, your social security number, your Medicare number, or other things to a stranger at a booth in a big box store. If Wi-Fi is used to search for the best option and you type in your personal information, can’t someone nearby with a sophisticated instrument collect the private information and use it for identity theft purposes? What if someone nearby simply listens carefully and collects the private information to use for identity theft? Since the insurance agent renting the booth and the big box store are profiting from a risky and unsecured booth in a store, shouldn’t that insurance agent and the big box store be liable for any harm that comes to the innocent person who uses the booth and suffers identity theft? This insurance agency spends thousands of dollars per year to protect the private information of our clients. Our office has several places where a client can meet an agent and complete an application for insurance in a private and secure setting. Our agents can help a client to search the Internet for the best Medicare prescription drug plan without saying or typing the client’s name and without needing to shout over nearby cash register activities. Is your personal, private information so cheap that you would risk it by talking to an agent who pays a cheap rent to a big box store? I hope not. Also, I hope that either the federal government or state governments outlaw unsecured insurance booths at big box stores. I hope that you will help to “push” for that law to protect people who want insurance. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Turn of Phrase Hair of the dog refers to treating an illness with more of what caused it;

specifically a hangover cure in which one drinks a mild alcoholic beverage the day after a drinking binge. The term originated in the 16th century, when doctors commonly treated people bitten by a rabid dog by dressing the wound with burned hair from the same dog.

M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment recently hosted its Third Annual Brunch in Orland Park to honor six young women for their outstanding achievement and for serving as role models. M.E.A.N. Girls is an anti-bullying initiative that teaches young women ages 10-15 in the Greater Chicago NWI area the importance of avoiding negativity, such as bullying and avoiding abusive relationships. From (left):Felicia Lawrence, Host of The JAM TV Show on WCIU-TV; (Center) Jahkaya Tekhen, M.E.A.N. Girls 2018 Star Award Honoree and (Right) Shatina Edwards, CEO and Founder of M.E.A.N. Girls Empower.

_______________________________

By Patricia Muhammad Because of outstanding service to their community and for being role models, six girls were honored during the Third Annual M.E.A.N. (Managing Emotions and Avoiding Negativity) Girls luncheon held May 26 at Georgio’s Restaurant in Orland Park. The annual event was hosted by Mrs. Shatina Edwards, founder and CEO of the M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment program. Honorees included, 10-year-old Philanthropist Josilyn Richardson; Richardson sends Barbie dolls all over the nation to girls who are less fortunate. JaeAunna Wilson was honored for her achievements as a teen fashion designer, model, and actress. Mira Bracey, acknowledged for Outstanding Achievement, was successful in continuing on with her education despite suffering from epilepsy. Daria Gaiter was recognized for her success as a radio co-host. Gaiter is a teen model and formerly Ms. Destiny Illinois. Jennesys Harris is a 10-year-old entrepreneur and author. Jahkaya Tekhen, 15, the 2018 M.E.A.N. Girls Star Honoree, was recognized for her achievements as a teen model and dancer. Felicia Lawrence, host of JAM TV on Chicago’s WCIU, made a special guest appearance. “These girls would not be where they are without their mothers. I think that all mothers should continue to push their daughters into greatness,” Edward said. Established in 2014, M.E.A.N. Girls is an antibullying initiative that teaches its members how to handle bullying without negativity. The program also teaches the mostly AfricanAmerican teens the importance of identifying the various types of bullying, particularly when it comes to girls bullying girls. On the M.E.A.N. Girls website, a sidebar explains the number of ways girls bully girls. “Girls may bully in the same ways guys do, or in different ways. Sometimes, girls bully in ways that are hard to see, like hurting someone’s feelings or their relationships. These can include the following: Spreading rumors or gossip, purposely leaving someone out, saying mean things or making nasty comments, getting other people to be mean to someone, writing nasty notes, emails, or text messages, sharing someone’s secrets to embarrass or hurt them, making mean comments about someone’s clothing.” M.E.A.N. Girls also teach I AM Beautiful and Relationship 101 programs. The relationship section teaches young girls about youth violence, teen dating, and understanding boundaries that prevent sexual harassment;

see more at the M.E.A.N. Girls website at www.meangirlsempowerment.org/programs. Edwards, who runs the 501 (c)3 organization, was bullied as a child and the experience motivated her to create a program that will teach young girls how to avoid negative situations, particularly in high school. “I created an organization that is a girl-friendly zone, where we can come together and empower each other.” Bullying is an anti-social issue that has reached epidemic proportions in schools around the country and on social media. A national bullying initiative, such as Bullying Stops Here, addresses the problems of bullying and encourages students to report bullying due to its harmful effects. According to news reports, depression and even harsher consequences such as suicide have been linked to bullying. Edward stated that it is common for children ages 12-18 to report that they have been tripped, shoved, or spit on. Thirteen percent of students reported that they were part of rumors, and about four percent reported that they had been excluded from activities and were threatened. Statistics were cited in the 2013 Statistics of School Crime and Safety. Constance Willoughby, a member of the Mean Girls Empowerment team, applauds M.E.A.N. Girls for its ability to address the issue of bullying, “M.E.A.N. Girls has a unique approach to anti-bullying and has created a lane for young girls to manage their emotions and avoid negativity.” As a new school year comes around in September, the month of October will be recognized as Anti-Bullying Month, and students in schools across the nation will be encouraged to wear blue in support of the national anti-bullying initiative. Edwards will focus her time working within her organization to promote the anti-bullying program You Can Sit With Us. She shared that for one week during anti-bullying month, M.E.A.N. Girls members will wear the color blue. Willoughby pointed out that the organization has given its members a voice, created a positive peer group, and offers a sense of empowerment that some of the young ladies otherwise would not have. Alize Hensley, a M.E.A.N. Girls mentee, said, “M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment has taught me how to love myself. I’ve learned how to respond to negative situations without getting upset. The program has opened my eyes about the real world and what’s going on it. I love M.E.A.N. Girls Empowerment.”

Driving past a local motel the other day, I read that you can buy a ‘nap’ for $30. Now I’m a big fan of the English language so I looked up the word ‘nap’ in my dictionary. The word nap is defined as ‘a brief sleep, often during the day.’ The word ‘nap’ brings to mind good memories. The first is that of kindergarten. Our kindergarten teacher would announce ‘nap time’ and we would get out our little rugs. Some kids had carpet remnants. Other kids had a mom or grandma who sent them off to school with a homemade rug. We spread out our rugs on the floor, and the teacher would turn off half the lights in the room. We then ‘napped’ for 5 or 6 minutes. I think the teacher used this time to decompress from the pressures that 20 fiveyear-olds can generate! The country of Spain introduced a nap called a siesta. The siesta is the traditional daytime sleep of Spain, and through Spanish influence, of many Latin American countries. A siesta is a short nap taken in the early afternoon, often after the midday meal. Such a period of sleep is a common tradition in some countries, particularly those where the weather is warm. Well, Chicago weather is not only warm, it’s humid too. A ‘siesta’ during the summer months in Chicago would certainly be justified and a good tradition to start. Now I don’t know what a $30 nap is, but I do know it’s probably not what is defined in an English dictionary— or how it is defined in a Latin American country. It’s probably a sketchy sort of pastime that a motel owner couldn’t accurately advertise on a billboard out in front of their establishment. It’s probably not the kind of activity that you can discuss in civilized conversation. I don’t really care what goes on during a $30 nap at a local motel—that’s not my point. My point is that local motel owners think they can hijack a perfectly good word in the English language and use it to describe something that it clearly is not. What gives them the right to use a perfectly good word like ‘nap’ that has served our civilization for hundreds of years, and up and change it without regard for civility or decorum? That right is clearly not what the founding fathers were referring to as ‘free speech.’ If you are motel owner and are advertising $30 naps here is some advice. This is a predominantly Englishspeaking country. If you want to use the English language to promote your business, please accurately describe your business without euphemism and innuendo. Those are pretty big words in the last sentence—I’ll loan you my dictionary if you need the definition. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of the King’s English

Thornton Township and South Suburban College hosted its annual Community Job Fair. More than 600 people and 75 businesses took part in the event that sought to help community members find meaningful jobs. Outreach efforts include going door-to-door in various communities, grocery stores, churches, libraries, unemployment office, major transportation stations in Chicago, and other areas. The Job Fair is targeting Regional, Northwest Indiana, Chicago, and South Suburbs. “We understand the important need for jobs in the community,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. “This is why the community job fair is one of my favorite programs that the township and the college put together. We as a township want to do everything we can to improve the quality of life for our residents. “Having a job or a career can be very empowering for someone,” said Ernst Lamothe Jr., communication manager for Thornton Township. “What made our job fair stand out from others is that our employers did on-the-spot interviews. They keep coming back year after year because they know we bring quality candidates to them.” The Community Job Fair was sponsored by Thornton Township Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township Board of Trustees, and South Suburban Community College. Co-sponsors of the Community Job Fair are: Village of South Holland, City of Calumet City, Village of Lansing, Village of Riverdale, and Village of Burnham.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our daughter wants to buy a house, but she seems to be more worried about the color of the walls than what the home has to offer. What can I tell her so she sees what to look for in a home? Answer: If you have hunted for a house, you probably got a sense that real-estate purchases don’t represent consumers at their most rational. Did you like a house more or less depending on whether you saw it on a sunny day? Chances are, you did. Buying a house isn’t the same as buying a stock, an air conditioner or even a car. It’s not just a product with pluses and minuses — good school system versus a small kitchen, a new roof versus a longer commute. A house represents the kind of life you want to live. And given its cost, a house and the value it gains or loses represents the life you could live. S o, i t c a n b e d i s t u r b i n g , t h o u g h probably not surprising, to realize that people’s judgment about real estate is susceptible to many of the foolish forces t hat a f fect so ma ny ot her consumer decisions. In some way s, it may be affected even more. Sup er f ic i a l t h i ng s s uc h a s a r o om painted an ugly color can make people less likely to buy a house, even though

Lost & Found

f i x i ng t hat problem i s a s cheap a s a couple of cans of paint. We’ve seen people wa l k away f rom a house t hat they really liked because it has green shag carpeting in the Living room. That v ision dest royed t he ot her posit ive thoughts they had about this house. As far as your daughter goes, you need to sit down with her, and put your years of wisdom and experience in front of her. Explain what she really needs to watch out for in a house purchase. How she can change many things inexpensively, but other items may be very costly. Have her speak to a real estate professional. T hey cer t a i n ly w i l l back you r w i se comments. A lso, be sure she w rites a contract on a house that is contingent on a home inspection by a licensed home inspector. If she still insists on buying for the wrong reasons, then it looks like experience is going to be her teacher. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of Selling? When you love nature enough to put up a bird feeder in your yard, expectations are high when you fill it with the seed you got from the grocery store. But then, you realize that while you may get many birds feeding, the variety of friendly fowl is limited. Where are the Blue Jays, Goldfinches and red cardinals? Are you doing something wrong? Carol Harsh of Wild Birds Unlimited will be doing a presentation at the South Holland Garden Club’s next meeting on Wednesday, June 13th at 7pm. She’s going to give all the gardeners and Bird Watcher wannabes tips on how to attract not only our local favorites, but migratory birds that pass through our region every day. Special attention will be given to Hummingbirds and how to attract them to your garden. How do you do that? Give the birds what they want, what they always keep an eye out for….Food! Carol will go through what food best attracts birds and what you can expect to see when specific regional delicacies are put out in your feeders. She’ll also go through a range of different styles of feeders, ones that keep the feed in, and the squirrels out. Other factors include creating an ambient atmosphere that will attract the birds to your garden paradise. Bird Baths are an essential addition to encourage birds to land and stay in your garden. Carol Harsh is the owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Schererville, Indiana, which opened in 2015. She has done many power-point presentations in the region, as well as hosted different organizations at her shop for hands on seminars on Bird Watching and birding in general. Besides the many varieties of seed, suet and mealworms, the shop also features hand made bird houses, feeders, bird baths and chimes. The South Holland Garden Club welcomes all persons interested to come on June 13th, at 7pm. The seminar will take place at the American Legion Hall, 443 E. 157th Street in South Holland. Handouts will be given and refreshments will be served. See you There!

Today I found 204 homes in the immediate South Suburbs of Chicago that have been on the market for more than 365 days. An entire year or more on the MLS for sale! 45 of those homes have been actively on the market for over 2 years. Can you imagine? Two years of keeping your home clean, having a lockbox on the door and leaving your home so realtors can show it! That’s a very long time even in today’s market. Also, in the same suburbs of the 498 homes that have actually sold so far this year, the average days on the market was 82. One of the first questions buyers ask is “How long has that home been on the market?” More often, buyers will use this information to determine how much they will offer for the home. That is, if the buyer even makes an offer at all. The longer a home has been on the market, the less chance it will get an offer from buyers because they will often think something is wrong with a house that’s been on the market for so long. In reality, the only thing

wrong may be the price! When agents pull listings to show to buyers they will often check the property history. If a home has been on the market for a long time with no price adjustments, it becomes obvious that the sellers are not very motivated and unlikely to negotiate. In this case the agent does not even submit the listing to the buyers. When working as a listing agent representing a seller, I do not want my seller’s home on the market for a long time with no price adjustments. We’ll often agree up front to scheduled price adjustments after set periods of time without offers. But the better strategy is to just price it right at the beginning. • Introduce her to books with girl heroes. There are plenty of books to choose from, so when reading to her let her enjoy a variety of adventures including books with strong female leaders like The Pearls of Wisdom or other books that were written to empower girls. This will send the message that you believe in her. Or perhaps help her write a story of her own imagining herself as the hero or lead character. If nothing else this will give you a valuable view of how she sees herself so you know what’s going on with her. • Share music with her. Play your favorite music and tell her why you like it and let her do the same. Take her to concerts. If she wants to play an instrument, help her learn how. Music, and the arts in general, can be very bonding experiences. “The most important change for today’s fathers is that they shouldn’t box girls in or out of anything just because they are a girl,” Engler says. “Fathers who respect the women in their lives have a better chance of raising daughters who feel deserving of respect themselves. Confidence, self-respect and family support will help them face any challenges that may come their way.” Sheri Engler is the author/illustrator of The Pearls of Wisdom: A Fairy Tale Guide to Life’s Magic Secrets for All Ages (www.ThePearlsOfWisdomBook.com). She is an experienced mentor, medium, and metaphysicist with a background in psychology, counseling and research. She received a BA in Clinical Psychology at San Francisco State University.

BOB KRYGSHELD If you’re in your twenties or thirties, you might be starting to focus more on investing to reach your financial goals. Because of this, you also may be more attuned to moves in the financial markets. Depending on your age, you may have only experienced the bull market of the past nine years, so you might not know what to expect —or how to respond— whenever the next bear market strikes. Of course, just recently, you’ve witnessed a market correction—a drop of at least 10 percent in the major stock market indices, such as the S&P 500. This sudden plunge made big news and reminded many investors of how volatile the financial markets can be. But a full-fledged bear market usually isn’t identified until the markets are down 20 percent from their recent highs. Plus, bear markets, unlike corrections, tend to linger for a while. The last “bear” emerged from hibernation in October 2007 and stayed on the prowl until early March 2009. During that time, the S&P 500 declined by about 50 percent. Clearly, investors were not happy—but the market recovered and moved to new heights. This long and strong run-up may have obliterated your bear market memories, if you ever had them at all. And that’s why you might want to familiarize yourself with some of the bare facts about bear markets: • Bear markets may provide good buying opportunities. When gas is expensive, you may just buy a few gallons at a time—but when the price falls, you’re probably more likely to fill up your tank. The same principle can apply to investing—when stock prices are down, your investment dollars

will buy more shares. And the more shares you own, the greater your ability to build wealth once the share price rises. In short, a bear market may provide you with a chance to buy quality investments at good prices. • Bear markets don’t last forever. No one can predict precisely how long bear markets will run, but they’ve typically been much shorter than bull markets. So, while you might not particularly like looking at your investment statement during a decline, you can take some comfort in knowing such downturns are a normal feature of the investment landscape. • Bear markets don’t affect all investments equally. If you only own U.S. stocks, your portfolio may well take a sizable hit during a bear market. But other types of investment vehicles may not be as directly affected—and some may even show positive results. Consequently, you could reduce the bear’s “bite” if you also own a variety of other investments, such as international stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on. However, while owning this type of diversified portfolio can help reduce the impact of market volatility, it does not guarantee profits or protect against losses. A bear market can be challenging. But by making the right moves, such as staying patient, looking for buying opportunities and maintaining a diversified portfolio, you may be able to prevent a market decline from becoming unbearable. RICHARD ZEKVELD We’re born copycats. Remember the time you cussed… then heard the instant replay from the four-year old next to you? Ouch. Still, imitation isn’t all bad. God wired us to learn through imitation. We watch, then do. We listen, then repeat. We learn how to talk, tie our shoes and treat a lady by copying others. A pastor once wrote his church, ‘Be imitators of God, as beloved children’ (Ephesians 5:1, the Bible). The call to imitate God here assumes a father-child relationship. These children are ‘beloved children’. Their father loved them so much, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to bleed and die for them to secure their place in his family. In response, they trust him and love him. And they want to be like him. Do you want to be like your Father in heaven? First, make sure you’re his child. Not sure? Ask him to forgive you and accept

you as his child. “To all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12, the Bible). Also, connect with other children of God - your sisters and brothers - in a local church. Second, get to know your Father and your older brother Jesus. Meet them in the Bible. Observe the way they relate, love, forgive, restore the broken and right wrongs. Finally, copy them. Did you notice that Jesus didn’t obliterate those who hurt him? Instead, he prayed for them. Copy that. You’re thinking, “But that’s phony. I’ll just be going through the motions, because I’m sure not feeling it!” If you wait to feel it, you’ll never do it. Decide to be a copycat. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Your heart will come around. Guaranteed.

Pictured here are Jim Dedelow of WJOB Radio, CIVS tea m leader a nd w i n ner of t he 2018 Grand Prize for his 2018 “Rea l Steel” Video Cha llenge, Kyle Toth and Essie Carson, a CAIC staffer Essie took a turn at the Virtual Forensic Crime Lab using v irtual v isualization. The fast paced morning took CAIC members and guests through a whirlwind overview of what the future is going to look like in just a few years. We are talking robotics and artificial intelligence that is already in place in some workplaces such as car and other types of manufacturing, surgery, engineering and steel processing just to na me a few. Lest we wor r y about machines or robots taking our places in the workplaces, according to Purdue’s Mort Handey, we need not. “This will help the humans in the workplace be more productive in different areas,” Handey noted from the Robotics Lab where he demonstrated a tool that did a series of repetitious movements, while the human handler multi-tasked alongside. Boiled down, the lab is about preparing us for the future of the workplace. The teachers are wonderful as they explain the process in plain language. Of special interest to the professors and teachers there is the SBIR $2.1 Billion Bill that will help establish a variety of small businesses, many of which can use some of the areas set up at the campus at Purdue University and the CIVS. He also touched on the low rate of patents in Northwest Indiana and how CIVS can help with that as well. Tips to Help Keep Pets Safe During the Summer Months Veterinarians at North Central Veterinary Emergency Center share the following safety tips to help keep pets safe during the summer months. Heat Stroke - Summer heat can cause a variety of problems for pets. Observe them closely during the summer to ensure that they do not burn their paw pads on hot sidewalks or sand, suffer from heat stroke or dehydration, or overexert themselves. Also, never leave a pet in a car unattended, even for a short period of time. Cars heat up quickly on hot days, often becoming dangerous within minutes. Leashes - Pets should always be on a leash and under the control of a responsible adult when outside of an enclosed yard. Use a harness leash when on balconies and decks. Microchips and tags It’s best to have your pets microchipped and to have a collar with a tag that has your pet’s name and your address and phone number. Keep contact information up to date with the microchip company. Pests - Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes thrive in the summer and can carry a variety of diseases

harmful to pets. Lyme Disease which is carried by ticks and is common near the lake region along the Michigan-Indiana border. The occurrance of heartworm disease is also increasing in our area. Talk to your veterinarian about how to protect your pet from these serious diseases carried by pests. Pesticides - Pesticides are toxic to pets. Keep pets away from lawns and fields that have been treated. Look for signs indicating they have been treated with pesticides or pellets and powders that have been spread. Vaccinations - If your dog visits places with high levels of dog traffic, it may be a good idea to get him vaccinated for the Canine Influenza Virus. Your pet may also benefit from a leptospirosis vaccine. Rabies vaccines are required by law for all dogs, cats, and ferrets. Talk with your veterinarian to determine which vaccines are appropriate for your pet. North Central Veterinary Emergency Center is open 24/7. The nearest location to Lansing is 2427 Ridge Road in Highland, Indiana. Call 219-881-1600 for more information.
