Community Healthcare System MLS class instructors (from left) Ethel Urbi, Mary Wallace (and far right) Nicole Griffin, congratulate recent graduates (left to right) Rachel M. Kometz, Shantelle Williams, Brenda Rayburn, Kelli Lynn Belcher, Marisha Lynn Miskus, Joseph Anthony Lucente and Monica Jasmin Mendoza. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

They may be one of the smallest graduating classes in Northwest Indiana with just seven students, but they are ready to make a big difference in the lives of patients at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System. Kelli Lynn Belcher (East Detroit, Michigan), Rachel M. Kometz (Whiting), Joseph Anthony Lucente (Chicago), Monica Jasmin Mendoza (Merrillville), Marisha Lynn Miskus (Dyer), Brenda Rayburn (Gary) and Shantelle Williams (Sauk Village, Illinois) are ready to go to work and have accepted jobs at the hospitals. The accredited School of Medical Laboratory Science that serves the labs of Community Hospital, Munster; St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart is aiming to meet the present and future demand for staffing in the clinical laboratory industry. Groundbreaking medical advances over the past century - antibiotics, heart bypass surgeries and chemotherapy for cancer to name a few - have also increased the need for the next generation of quality-trained healthcare workers, especially in the laboratory setting, explained Brenda Eriksen, MD, medical director of Community Healthcare System laboratories. “Healthcare is growing and evolving and you all will be a part of that great change,” she said addressing the new graduates. “You can look forward to a lifetime of growth on the job. I will look back in my later years and remember that I was a part of your beginning. Welcome to the healthcare fold. You are just getting started…don’t ever stop.” That growing need for future Medical Laboratory Science staff is what impelled administrators at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System to establish the school and pursue accreditation, according to Ethel Urbi, Dean of the School of Medical Laboratory Science. “A 2009 report indicated that within the next 10 years, at least 20 percent of the existing lab staff in the United States would be retirement age,” she said. “To help us grow the program in 2013, Community Healthcare System started their own school to replenish staff. After rigorous review and evaluation, we became accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 2016-2021.”

Medical Laboratory Scientists are highly trained, highly skilled professionals whose contribution to diagnosis and treatment of disease is invaluable. A career in Medical Laboratory Science involves testing of blood and body fluid specimens using complex chemistry analyzers to diagnose heart, liver disease, or cancer, microscopic examination of blood cells for anemia or leukemia; identification of pathogenic organisms causing infection, immunological evaluations and preparation of blood products for life-saving transfusions. Belcher graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. She will be working at Community Hospital in Munster. Kometz graduated from Purdue University Northwest with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She has accepted a position at Community Hospital. Lucente graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He will be working at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. Mendoza graduated from Purdue University Northwest with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She has accepted a position at Community Hospital. Miskus graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, and will be working at St. Catherine Hospital. Rayburn graduated from Purdue University Northwest with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. She has accepted a position at Community Hospital. Williams graduated from Governor’s State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and will be working at Community Hospital. The 11-month program is intended for baccalaureate graduates in sciences such as Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or Pre-professional. The course includes 22 weeks of classroom instruction in clinical laboratory sciences, hands-on student laboratory activities and intensive 24 weeks on-the-job clinical training. Classes are scheduled to begin again Monday, July 16, 2018. Graduates interested in pursuing a career in Medical Laboratory Science who would like to request an application packet should contact Mary S. Wallace MS, MT (ASCP), Program Director-School of Medical Laboratory Science, 219-703-2412, mwallace@comhs.org.

Your Indiana Summer Job and Taxes College and high school students considering working over the summer should ensure they understand taxable income to avoid confusion next tax season. Most often, taxes are withheld from an employee’s paycheck. However, students may encounter situations where their taxes are not withheld, and they would need to pay taxes directly to Indiana’s Department of Revenue or the IRS. When a student is a new employee to a business, the employer may withhold taxes from their paycheck. The employee fills out Federal Form W-4 and State Form WH-4. To help taxpayers accurately complete the federal form, the IRS has an online Withholding Calculator at www.irs.gov/ individuals/irs-withholding-calculator. By ensuring the correct amount of tax is being withheld, taxpayers avoid an unexpected tax bill or penalty at tax time next year. Social Security and Medicare taxes will also be withheld from their income by their employer. Students who exchange services for cash directly from another individual, such as babysitting or lawn care, are classified as self-employed. Income earned from self-

employment is subject to income tax, and workers who are self-employed may be responsible for paying taxes directly to DOR and the IRS. Taxes can be paid by making estimated tax payments during the year or when filing taxes. Taxpayers who are self-employed should keep good records of all funds they receive. In addition, employees who receive tips as part of their summer income need to report those tips when filing taxes. Tip income is taxable and any amount over $20 in a month needs to be reported to an employer. Keeping a daily tip record will help come tax time. If a taxpayer is in a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, active duty pay, such as pay for summer advanced camp, is taxable. Other allowances the taxpayer may receive —like food and lodging allowances paid to ROTC students participating in advanced training—may not be taxable. More information can be found on DOR’s Student Taxes website at www.in.gov/dor/4751.htm. Customers may call DOR Customer Service at 317-2322240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST with any questions or concerns.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I have a neighbor whose downspout has a plastic extension that’s directed at my house. The houses are only about ten feet apart and the ground is a bit higher on his side. I have asked him to reroute the extension to no avail. Do I have any other options? Answer: Yes. Given that the homes are 10-feet apart I suspect you’re in a newer community with a homeowners association. If we assume that no one has the right to devalue your property by flooding, you could ask your HOA for help or you might ask the local building inspector for assistance. If the slope was created by a builder, if it was man-made, then one could imagine a suit against the builder, the HOA and the neighbor for the damage done to your property. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail before costs for litigation reach flood stage. Question: All of my friends tell me its a bad idea to buy an investment house with a friend. Is this true? Answer: Yes and no. Yes, you can

reasonably buy investment property with a friend, relative, co-worker or anyone you choose. No, it’s not a good idea if done incorrectly. The problem is not in the joint buying, it’s usually in the lack of a written agreement between the investors. Without a proper agreement put together by an experienced attorney in advance of any purchases, it’s inevitable that what started as a good relationship will run into problems when one investor wants to sell and the other doesn’t, finances change or the property has losses. So, if you want to buy with someone, that’s fine—just have a proper agreement in place before the first check is written. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Lake Area United Way Announces 2nd Annual Unity in Our Community Week

Financial Advice Column

Lake Area United Way is excited to announce the second year of Unity in Our Community Week, which will take place August 6th through August 10th. Unity in Our Community takes the place of the traditional Day of Caring and expands it into a weeklong opportunity to give back to the community through volunteerism. It also serves as the official start to this year’s new community campaign. During the week various nonprofits, churches, and other community organizations throughout the county host a variety of volunteer projects that are open to the public. Projects range from packing meals for the hungry at PackaPalooza, to helping the homeless get access to services with We Care From The Heart, to expanding the capacity of the Cedar Lake Historical Society through painting and renovation, and much more. Most projects are also family friendly and are great opportunities for children and teens to gain volunteer hours. “Unity in Our Community Week is a great way to bring people together in a concerted effort to make a difference in the community. Volunteers are vital to the success of any nonprofit or community organization, and Unity in Our

Community allows organizations to not only get help with much needed projects, but to also meet new volunteers and share their mission. Volunteers are able to see the difference they can make in the community when they give of their time and talent, as well as learn more about the variety of great organizations serving Lake County,” said Lake Area United Way President & CEO Lisa Daugherty. Volunteers can view and sign up for projects on the Volunteer Lake County! website at www.volunteerlakecounty.org/unity. Projects will continue to be added throughout the summer, so be sure to check back often for new opportunities. If you are looking for Day of Caring projects in Porter or LaPorte Counties please visit www.nwivolunteer.org. Projects in these counties will go live July 1st. Organizations looking to host a volunteer project can still do so. To get your project listed on the Unity in Our Community website, please reach out to Megan Sikes at msikes@lauw. org or 219-923-2302 ext. 311. We will continue excepting and posting projects through mid-July.

Lessons About Money Can Be Priceless Gifts to Children BOB KRYGSHELD Father’s Day is almost upon us. If you’re a dad, you certainly may enjoy getting cards and gifts, of course. But, over time, you will gain even greater satisfaction by what you can give your children— such as some valuable financial lessons. These lessons can include the following: • Setting goals – If you are contributing to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, explain how you build these accounts now, while you are working, so you’ll have enough money to enjoy a comfortable retirement someday. And you can bring your children into the picture, too, by telling them that another financial goal is saving enough to help send them to college or to further their education in other ways. • Value of understanding the financial markets – You may actually be quite surprised at how interested your kids are in investing, especially the concept of “owning” companies through stocks and stockbased vehicles. Depending on their ages, you might even want to show them the progress of your own investments and describe, in general terms, how different events can cause the markets to rise and fall, especially in the short term. You could even discuss the difference between the basic types of investments, such as stocks and bonds. • Putting time on your side – You might want to emphasize the importance of patience, and how investing is not a “getrich-quick” scheme, but a process that requires decades of diligence and persistence. Let your children know that it’s of great value to start investing as early as possible, so

you can put time on your side, giving investments a chance to grow. • Living within your means – We all know that you can’t always get what you want. Stress to your children that you can’t just splurge on big purchases whenever you feel like it, because such behavior can lead to bad outcomes. Use concrete examples: If you have a car that’s several years old, tell your children that it would be nice to have a new one, but you simply must wait until you can afford it. • Paying debts on time – Tell your children that, no matter how good a saver you are, or how thrifty you try to be, you still have debts, such as your mortgage payment, and it’s important to pay these debts on time. You may not want to get too detailed about the consequences of missing debt payments— bad credit scores may not be that easy for children to understand—but you can certainly mention that if you’re always late on payments, you might find it harder to borrow money when you really need it. By sharing these principles with your children, you will, at the least, give them something to think about, and you may well find that you’ve helped start them on the path to a lifetime of making solid financial moves. And who knows? If they truly master the ideas you’ve taught them, one day they might give you some really nice Father’s Day gifts. ARLO KALLEMEYN Condensed from Life’s Little Instruction Book by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. Don’t waste time learning the “tricks of the trade”— instead, learn the trade. Admit your mistakes. Be brave; even if you’re not, pretend to be—no one can tell the difference. Read the Bill of Rights. Use credit cards only for convenience, never for credit. Never cheat. Give yourself a year and read the Bible cover to cover. Learn to listen. Opportunity sometimes knocks very softly. Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all he or she has. Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage. Never take action when you’re angry. Enter a room with purpose and confidence. Don’t discuss business in elevators—you never know who may overhear you. Never pay for work before it’s completed. Be willing to lose a battle in order to win the war. Don’t gossip. Beware of the person who has nothing to lose. Choose a charity in your community and support it generously with your time and money.

RICHARD ZEKVELD You never know what you’re going to see downtown Chicago. Walking past a McDonald’s on Randolph Street, I noticed a large billboard on the back of a truck, across the boulevard. At first, I thought it was a McDonald’s ad. But beneath the golden arches, the sign proclaimed, “McChicken Cruelty.” The billboard featured the floor of a barn with two chickens, one alive, one mangled. Elsewhere on the billboard: #AnimalEquality. Three things quickly came to mind. The first two are truisms. First, whatever your opinion of the sign’s assertions, senseless cruelty toward God’s creatures is never warranted. Second, animals are not equal with people. God created people in his own image with unique dignity and value. Now for the third thing. As I continued walking, the sign morphed in my imagination. Instead of the McDonald’s logo I saw the Planned Parenthood logo. Instead of McChicken Cruelty, I saw Baby Cruelty. Instead of one live and one

BRANDI SMITS Serafina and the Black Cloak By Robert Beatty Serafina knows that her life is different from most. She knows that other people have friends and are free to roam where they please. But Serafina lives in the basement of the Biltmore Estate with her father in secret. No one is to know that they are down there. Her father is responsible for the maintenance of the vast estate, especially the Dynamo, a machine made by Thomas Edison that gives electricity to the house. Serafina earns her keep as well by catching all the rats that find their way into the basement and releasing them outside. One day when Serafina was hunting for wayward rats, she heard a commotion. She saw a man in a black cloak chasing a young girl in a bright yellow dress. She couldn’t believe her eyes when the man put the cloak around the little girl and she completely vanished. Serafina tried to tell her pa, but he was more concerned that the Vanderbilts would discover them in the basement than he was about finding the missing girl. Serafina decided to take this investigation upon herself and started sneaking around the estate, eavesdropping whenever possible. It

turned out that there were other missing children as well. Serafina knew she had to do whatever she could to uncover the truth behind the missing children, especially since she had no one to tell about the man in the black cloak. Or at least that’s what she thought. One day while she was sneaking around, she met a boy around her age. He was Braeden Vanderbilt, nephew of the owners of the Biltmore. Braeden is different from most boys his age. He had little interest in friends and spent most of his time with his horses and his dog Gideon. Braeden could tell that Serafina was different. He believed her when she told him about the man in the black cloak. Together they would follow whatever clues they could find and bring the missing children home. Serafina and the Black Cloak is a magical mystery with a strong, independent female character. Beatty manages to create a solid friendship between Serafina and Braeden that doesn’t fall into the usual romantic relationship. A secondary plotline involving Serafina and her true identity might have better been told in a separate book, but otherwise this is a wonderfully fantastical tale.

Tree Identification Book Available from the Arbor Day Foundation The Arbor Day Foundation has a book that helps people identify trees in a simple, step-by-step process. The book, What Tree Is That?, is available for a $5 donation to the nonprofit tree-planting organization. What Tree Is That? is a fun, easy-to-use tree identification guide that features hand-drawn botanical illustrations highlighting the distinctive characteristics of many tree species. Nature lovers and professional arborists alike have called this pocket field guide a must-have, user-friendly resource. Its beautiful, full-color illustrations are in precise detail and depict natural colors, shapes and textures so users can make a positive species identification in just a few easy steps. The Arbor Day Foundation offers this book to help people identify trees throughout the Eastern and Central regions of the United States. What Tree Is That? uses a unique step-by-step approach for identifying the species of each tree, explaining what to look for in the shape and arrangement of the leaves, differences in the leafstalks and specific characteristics of fruits, flowers, buds and bark. “Our What Tree Is That? Pocket guide is an ideal resource for developing a greater appreciation for trees,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The Arbor Day Foundation strives to help people enjoy and appreciate trees, and we feel our pocket field guide will do just that.” What Tree is That? is also available as an online interactive version at arborday.org. ______________________________

BY Carrie Steinweg LANSING, Ill. (June 2018) – June has long been a popular wedding month, so it’s the time that the Lansing Historical Society celebrates brides of past by opening an exhibit with local links. In the annual “June Brides” exhibit you’ll find dresses worn by Lansing ladies from throughout the decades. According to Museum Curator Barbara Dust, the oldest dress in the collection dates back to 1880, before Lansing was even incorporated as a village. Last year 65 dresses were displayed in the museum, which is located in the lower level of the Lansing Public Library. Most were wedding gowns, but others were bridesmaid dresses or impressive dresses that would have been suitable guest attire. Accessories such as shoes, veils, and headpieces complete the exhibit. “It’s hard to say what’s the most unusual dress, but I think the two flapper-style short wedding dresses from the 1920s could qualify,” said Dust. One dress in the collection is from the 1930s and was worn by Julia Gault, a founding member of the Lansing Historical Society and the first curator. Gault garnered national attention when she sued her employer, T.F. South High School, for age discrimination for their mandatory retirement age of 65. The case went to the US Supreme Court, Dust explained, and the court ruled in her favor. Dust mentioned that a walk through the museum to see the bridal gowns gives a good overview of how fashions have changed over the past century. “I enjoy learning about the fashion trends and how they are related to the history of the times, and I add it to the text of the displays,” she said. “I enjoy finding out the stories of the young couples and trying to make the exhibit relevant to the visitors by asking their input about their weddings. One year we asked people the music that was played at their weddings. We downloaded the songs mentioned and play them during the exhibit hours. This year I am planning to elicit stories of wedding flowers because I was touched by the story of Meghan Merkel’s bouquet being Diana’s favorite flowers.” Although the exhibit includes many of the same dresses from year to year, the arrangement is always a bit different. Dust said, “Every year we display some dresses that have not been out for a long time as well as some gowns that are just so iconic for their era that we have to put them out each year.” Some of the dresses are becoming too fragile to handle and place on mannequins without damaging them. While lengths and styles have varied over the decades, nearly every wedding dress on display is in traditional shades of white or ivory—but not all of them. “My favorite gown is the one worn by Joan Reich in the 1950s. It is a light shade of blue with a very full skirt. I love it because it reminds me of the blue gown in the Disney Cinderella movie of my childhood,” said Dust. She is also fond of a black chemise dress with red roses embroidered with beads. “They were hand sewn by the wearer’s sister,” said Dust. “It is not really a wedding dress, but we put it out as a ‘wedding guest’ dress because it is just so beautiful. June Brides has been a regular part of the museum for 30 years. This year the exhibit opens June 9 and runs through August 29 and can be viewed during the museum’s regular hours: 6:00–8:00pm on Mondays, 3:00–5:00pm on Wednesdays; and 11:00am–1:00pm on Saturdays. Tours can also be arranged by appointment by calling 708-474-7497.

Assistant Librarian Ann Jones (left) presents the Wellesley Book Award to Evelyn Santillan. (Photo provided)

_______________________________

Marian Catholic junior Evelyn Santillan, of Harvey, Illinois, was awarded the Wellesley Book Award for 2018. The Book Award Program recognizes young women who have been chosen by their high schools for their intelligence, determination, motivation, and achievement. They are visible members of their communities and academic leaders in their schools. Wellesley College’s history is rich with women who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom and in personal achievements. Wellesley College hopes to continue that legacy with the Book Award. Santillan stood out to the selection committee because of her outstanding academic achievement at Marian Catholic High School and her long list of service activities, including a community garden project in her hometown. Santillan also volunteers with Restoration Ministries, a community outreach program based in Harvey. She attributes her passion for reading to the Nancy Drew series, which she was introduced to by a pen pal from North Carolina, who would send her copies from this series with her letters. Santillan plans to study Biology in college and wants to work in medicine. She is hoping to apply to the QuestBridge Program, which would allow a full ride to the school of her choice. Wellesley College is one of her top choices. B r a d f o rd - W h i t e w a t e r heaters, hydromatic pumps. Fast installation. Witvoet Plumbing. 708-331-7335 Call The Plumber. State of District 205 By Leotis D. Swopes I have dutifully served Thornton Township High School District 205 for last three years as Superintendent or Interim with a mission to make education meaningful for the students that entered its doors. I attempted to make sure that every student, every day, had a teacher in his/her classroom that cared about his/her education every day! Therefore, I defined my role as a higher level of service to give students skill of mind, hand and heart, so they in turn would help others. I was selected as superintendent in May 2015 following a school board election whose winning candidates desired to be more progressive and build a foundation to set the school district’s course in a more positive direction. I was the seventh superintendent in as many years! As this trek began with the new board and superintendent, it was paramount that communication was going to be the call of the day. It was important to build a cohesive team, internally. Also, we had to reach out to our constituencies to foster collaborative efforts and instill transparency in our operations. The fidelity of our purpose needed to reflect the urgency of making meaningful changes from the input of a cross-section of stakeholders. More importantly, we had to address instructional and cultural relevant paradigms more comprehensively to counter the effects of poor pupil performances in all our schools, while celebrating the things that had been done well, thus far. Following are the accomplishments made from May 2015 to June 30, 2018. No one person could have done this by him or herself. The many results were the advent of collaboration, communication and cohesive teamwork. A Strategic Planning Process (2015) produced Five District/Board Goals; Vision and Mission Statements; along with five Core Values. The five goals will be used to categorize the accomplishments that were made over the past three years. Goal I. Ensure continuous learning development, growth and achievement for all students. Mastery Connect (9/2016) - technology to foster multi-tier support for struggling students; Northwest Educational Assessment (NWEA- 2017) - Type I District Assessment tool to monitor annual student progress at strategic times of the year; Curriculum Audit (2017) - centered on the main business of schools, teaching, curriculum and learning; Collaborated with Illinois Center School Improvement (ICSI) and Illinois State Board of Education as priority and focused schools to establish goals (Mathematics, English and Culture & Climate) to design school improvement; Outlook Academy (2016) – provided students pathways to complete high school graduation requirements in a different setting and additional supports; The advent of Division Leaders – these are instructional focused administrators trained in their specific content areas who work to improve the teaching and learning process; Adopted SAT Suite of Assessments (2016) – designed to provide greater “readiness” for students in unprecedented ways in their schools/district; Atlas Rubicon (2018) – an online warehouse to build the district’s curriculum in collaborative ways and for continuous improvement. Goal II. Ensure a safe, supportive, challenging and culturally sensitive learning environment.

Peace Center (2016) – provided layers of interventions and programs to include staff mentors, peer leaders, group and individual counseling, Positive Behavior Intervention Systems; Senate Bill 100 Tribunal – a cross section of experienced educators who review, advise and make determinations in the exercising of equity in the disciplining of student with serious infractions; Governors State University Partnership – making teachers aware and better prepared to address students who have lived through Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES); Collaborated with Illinois Center School Improvement (ICSI) and Illinois State Board of Education as priority and focused schools to establish goals (Mathematics, English and Culture and Climate) to design school improvement; Each school developed Safety Plans – ensuring safe passage, taking preventive operations and mutual input; Atlas Rubicon (2018) – an online warehouse to build the district’s curriculum in collaborative ways and for continuous improvement. Goal III. Recruit, train and retain a highquality staff that is committed to continuous improvement through teamwork, collaboration and shared leadership. Frontline (2015) – online manager for attracting and hiring the best candidates; Talent Ed (2016) – online resource to improve observation, supervision and evaluation process. Goal IV. Engage parents, students, staff, clergy, business owners and community (stakeholders) in the District’s continuous improvement effort. Strategic Planning Process (10/15) resulting in Vision and Mission Statements; Core Values to guide District work; Grade level Parent Coordinators at each of

the high schools; Parent Summit (2018) – provided parents with strategies and skills to help their children and work with their schools; Chicago State University Partnership (2016) – gave access to higher education and workforce development; Governors State University Partnership (2017) – making teachers aware and better prepared to address students who have lived through Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES); South Suburban College Partnership (2016) – increased the number of students earning dual credits significantly; Southland Conference (2017) - our coaches/athletes desired to move from the Southwest Suburban Conference (SWSC) to increase our competitiveness. This will begin in the 2019-2020 school year. Goal V. Demonstrate and communicate effective and efficient school district operations to ensure excellent stewardship of public resources. Updated all school district policies (2017); Hired a full-time Chief School Business Official (2016) – the individual monitors all school business operations for greater efficiency; Bond Issues of $60 million (2016) – improve infrastructure in all three district high schools, stadiums and fieldhouses; Bond Issues of $2 million (2016) – improve technology throughout the district; Bond Issues (2016) were structured to reduce property tax over a longer period of time; Technology Audit (2018) – designed to assess infrastructure, personnel and needs to run a highly proactive system; Financial Recognition from ISBE (2018) - two years of having met its financial requirements and received a high score of 3.70/4.00 scale.

Neurosurgeon, Adviser to Pope, Addresses 2018 BNI Class

Dr. Robert Buchanan, who graduated in Bishop Noll’s class of 1982, gave this year’s commencement address to the class of 2018. A devout Catholic who serves on the board of directors for the National Catholic Bioethics Center, Buchanan was appointed by Pope Benedict to serve on the international Pontifical Academy for Life.

_______________________________

On graduation day, Bishop Noll Institute students heard life lessons from a Bishop Noll alumnus who overcame his own obstacles to find success as a renowned neurosurgeon and adviser to the pope. Dr. Robert J. Buchanan, BNI class of 1982 who now resides in Austin, Texas, encouraged graduates to learn from the lessons their families, friends and Bishop Noll have taught them. Speaking about his own high school days, Buchanan noted that while he was an all-state and all-American tennis player, he at times struggled with academics and discipline. “I did not have a clear pathway to finding my way to where I stand addressing you here today. I was often ‘off-script’ during my life journey.” Buchanan, a graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, is a devout Catholic who serves on the board of directors for the National Catholic Bioethics Center. Pope Benedict appointed him to serve on the international Pontifical Academy for Life, made up of scientists and theologians from around the world who advise the pope on bioethical issues that impact human life and Catholic morality. He now serves

Dr. Buchanan, meets with seniors from the BNI class of 2018 who plan to pursue careers in the medical field. Buchanan is chief of neurosurgery and chief of functional neuroscience at the Seton Brain and Spine Institute in Austin. He also is an associate professor at the University of Texas’ Dell Medical School. He is a graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

on the Academy under Pope Francis. “So, how in the world did a guy like me get appointed by two Popes to be their adviser, be a chief of a neurosurgery department, get knighted into an ancient religious order, and find a wife? It’s because I never lost sight of the fact that I wanted to make a contribution to the world in some way. I learned how to be tenacious and steadfast once I put my mind to something. We in this room come from a tough stock of people, very little has been handed to people from our community,” said Buchanan, who grew up on Chicago’s Southeast Side where his family still lives. “Our grandparents and parents are fighters and have fought very hard and tirelessly to get you and I to where we now stand. Our families have strong Midwestern values that we are the product of. I wasn’t going to be negatively defined by my past; but instead, my resolve to start off on a good foot was accelerated.” Buchanan told the students that their Catholic faith will give them everything they need to live a full and meaningful life. “It was Christ who changed the old tenet of ‘an eye for an eye’ into a new and fresh doctrine of ‘those without sin cast

the first stone.’ This was a radical departure from history, and it was Christ who set the world on fire with an unconditional love, forgiveness, and service to others … We are acting as Christ’s representatives here on earth. And we need to see Him in those we interact with every day, in those we serve.” In closing, Buchanan reminded the graduates about the wonderful and supportive people who prepared them to venture out of high school and find success of their own. He asked them to look around at their classmates and wonder who may one day be speaking at future BNI graduation ceremonies, who may be tapped on the shoulder by a president or a pope and be asked to serve. “I was sitting there, where you are, 36 years ago, a guy from the Southeast Side of Chicago, and it happened to me. And it can happen to you as well, Class of 2018, because you are prepared to serve.” Buchanan is chief of neurosurgery and chief of functional neuroscience at the Seton Brain and Spine Institute in Austin. He also is an associate professor at the University of Texas’ Dell Medical School.

The program is another step in the company’s commitment to train and educate workers to advance in the jobs of today -- and the future. In partnership with Guild Education, a leading education benefits platform, Walmart associates will be able to access affordable, high-quality associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in Business or Supply Chain Management. Under the program, which will be made available to all Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club associates, Walmart will subsidize the cost of higher education, beyond financial aid and an associate contribution equivalent to $1 a day. Degrees will be offered through the University of Florida, Brandman University and Bellevue University – nonprofit schools selected for their focus and strong outcomes on serving working adult learners. “Investing in the personal and professional success of our associates is vital to Walmart’s future success. We know training and learning opportunities empower associates to deliver for customers while growing and advancing in their careers,” said Greg Foran, CEO of Walmart U.S. Highlights of the program include: AFFORDABLE Under the program, the associate contribution toward a college degree would be just $1 a day. Walmart will subsidize the cost of tuition, books and fees, eliminating the need for student loan debt and addressing one the biggest hurdles that keep people from returning to college. In addition, associates can jumpstart their path to completion by earning college credit for paid training at Walmart Academies. Hundreds of thousands of associates have already undergone skills training equivalent to more than $210 million in college credits. This will save associates both time and money in completing their degree. RELEVANT Walmart selected universities with a specialized focus on serving working adult learners and top outcomes for the working adult demographic. In addition, Walmart is collaborating with these universities to tailor curriculum to

relevant skills for jobs and advancement across industries for today and in the future. ACCESSIBLE Working with three universities that include both selective and open-access programs, Walmart provides all associates a place to start. The goal is for all associates who apply for admission to be accepted. These universities have a programmatic dedication to high graduation rates for their students. SUPPORTED From day one, associates will receive support from a Guild Education coach on everything from the application and enrollment process to selecting the appropriate degree. This kind of academic counseling has been shown to help students complete their degree. “Walmart has kicked off what might be the nation’s most scalable approach to creating educational opportunity for America’s workforce, now available to its U.S. associates and their families,” said Rachel Carlson, chief executive officer and co-founder of Guild Education. “Walmart is also leading innovation at the intersection of workforce development and higher education by helping associates earn college credit for their on-the-job training.” Walmart is also committed to an independent evaluation of the outcome of its new offering. The Lumina Foundation has agreed to research and measure the impact and effectiveness of the program and will work with the Walmart team to share findings. “Walmart is making a significant investment in its workforce that will not just help the company, but help shift how our society moves toward more affordable and accessible pathways for individuals to be recognized and rewarded for their work-based skills and knowledge, resulting in highquality, relevant credentials. We applaud Walmart’s efforts,” said Jamie Merisotis, president and chief executive officer of the Lumina Foundation. “I commend Walmart for trying an innovative strategy to increase the skills and post-secondary education of its workers and for committing to have the Lumina Foundation conduct an independent evaluation of the program. Speaking Of Seniors

Obama Policy Hurts Seniors WOODROW WILCOX On April 30, 2018, I wrote a letter to a client to explain how a policy of the Obama administration caused a balance due bill from a hospital for the senior. The senior wanted to know why he owed something when he had both Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy through our agency. Here is part of the letter that I wrote to him to explain this. “I received the document that you delivered and compared that to the hospital bill. YOU SHOULD PAY THE BILL. Medicare ruled that five items were not covered by Medicare under either Part A or Part B. The items were SELF ADMINISTERED DRUGS (S.A.D.). “Under President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder redefined what medicines would and would not be covered under Medicare Part A and Part B when a senior citizen is in a hospital. I have written on this subject several times. A copy of my big article is enclosed. I believe that this policy written under President Obama is totally unfair to seniors. Unfortunately, I am unable to change federal government policy. “But, I can tell you that after you pay the bill and get a receipt which shows that it was for medicines while in a hospital, then I could help you to apply to your Medicare Part D policy insurance company for a partial reimbursement of those funds.” The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This agency cares about our senior citizen clients and we “go the extra mile” to help them. But, we are unable to change federal government policies that hurt senior citizens. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved senior citizen clients over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems.com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com. Video games, systems and accessor ies. Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Dear Mr. Seller… MIKE BUDER Dear Mr. Seller, congratulations on your marriage and the twins that are coming in January. I am very happy for your growing family and I am sure that you are looking forward to moving into your dream home with table space in the kitchen, a big yard and a family room. It also comes with a $200,000 price tag. I know that you paid $50,000 with 5% down payment for your 650 sq. ft. 2 bedroom ranch 3 years ago. I understand that you need your ranch to sell for at least $75,000 so that you can realize the down payment on your new home. But don’t you think this is asking a lot? Particularly when the most recent sales of ranches in your area are under $55,000? Unfortunately, the market doesn’t care what you need to realize in the sale of your home. The offers you receive will be based on impersonal factors such as comparable sales, current inventory, available financing and on a few factors that you can affect such as the condition of your home. You see, even if your future buyer thought that money was no object and wanted to give you what you need to buy your dream home, that buyer is probably getting a loan and will have to get an appraisal as part of the mortgage. The appraiser is not going to let the buyer give you what you need to move to your dream home just because you are so

nice and you and your wife are expecting twins. So what do you do? You can stay put. Living in a 650 sq. ft. ranch with a spouse and newborn twins. Babies don’t take up a lot of space. It may be challenging to keep the house in a ready to show condition, but at $75,000 you won’t be getting many showings anyway. Another option is to scale back on your new home. Maybe we can find a lower priced dream home. Or we can look for a diamond in the rough that is undervalued because it needs a paint job and a little imagination—the plain Jane overlooked by everyone else. The most important decision you have to make is price. Remember that the market doesn’t care what you need and will only give you what your home is worth. If you want to sell your home, you need to be realistic. Price your home in harmony with the rest of the market. No one is going to give you more than what your home is worth. The buyer can’t care what you need. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. BNI Boasts Indiana’s Only Known High School Writing Center

Bishop Noll Writing Center tutors help their fellow students with improving their writing skills. Tutors went through training at Bishop Noll and took field trips to Lewis University and DePaul University to see college writing centers in action.

To improve the writing ability of BNI students, two English teachers founded and opened the Bishop Noll Writing Center this school year. Modeled after college writing centers, where peer tutors help others revise their work, it is the only writing center registered at the high school level in the state of Indiana, according to the International Writing Centers Association. “The best way to improve anything is through practice and growth,” said co-founder Rose Mullaney, a 2011 graduate of Bishop Noll. “We decided what could really help our students would be to look at their writing as a revision process.” In fact, the motto of the Writing Center is “Growth through Revision.” Co-founder Mariann Laird gained even more insight into how to run the Writing Center when she attended the International Writing Association Conference. She said it was fascinating to learn “how to get the kids to embrace the idea of the writing center. How it can become the culture of the school and improves students’ ability to write.”

The BNI Writing Center is run through trained student tutors who offer consultation and feedback to any student who schedules a time to come in for help. Tutors went through training at Bishop Noll and took field trips to Lewis University and DePaul University to see college writing centers in action. “It was a neat experience for our students who had never heard of a writing center,” Laird said. The teachers agree they want to offer BNI students many opportunities to become confident writers, and the Writing Lab is helping them not only with school assignments, but with scholarship essays and college applications. In its first year, they trained eight tutors and they said nearly 50 students made appointments and used the service this semester. They hope next year it will continue to grow and prepare Warriors for their bright futures. To learn more about attending Bishop Noll for the 2018-19 school year, call (219) 932-9058 or e-mail admissions@ bishopnoll.org.
