Wrzalinski is pursuing a master’s degree in healthcare administration. Leo Correa, CEO, thanked the auxiliary for their fund raising efforts to make the scholarship awards a reality each year. He congratulated students on their decision to pursue a healthcare career. “Healthcare is a rewarding field, and there is a definite need for an infusion of healthcare providers,” he said. Correa reminded students of how hard parents work to put their children through school. Scholarships like these have

Summer is here and what’s better than summer and ice cream? Here is a neat recipe to make your own icecream if you have the craving and the grocery store is closed. Making your own ice cream isn’t so hard. Forget endlessly cranking the handle of an ice-cream maker. After combining the ingredients, you can simply shake up your soft serve ice cream— and it’s done in just 5 minutes. Ingredients 2 tablespoons sugar 1 cup half and half 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better. Kosher or rock salt works best, but table salt is fine.) Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full) 1 pint-size ziplock bag 1 gallon-size ziplock bag Instructions Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly. Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. You can even add chocolate chips. It’s easy clean up too! Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of ice cream! PS – I actually tried this recipe and it really works!

programs at children’s hospitals across the nation. The convention program featured addresses by National FFA Southern Region Vice President Ian Bennett of Georgia and from each of the retiring major state officers. During the convention, John Searl, President of the Riverdale FFA chapter, received the Nursery Operations State Proficiency Award. John is the son of Mark and Karen Searl of Port Byron; his FFA Advisor is Richard Houzenga. John’s Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) consists of a small greenhouse that he operates to produce a variety of vegetables and annual flowers, which John markets at his school and at a roadside stand. Through his SAE, John has learned production and entrepreneurship skills. He hopes to use these skills after college as a small business owner.

MIKE BUDER a strong support system with their broker, you can feel confident they should do a fair job. But if they lack support AND they are green, then you are taking a big chance with them handling one of the largest transactions of your life. Today’s real estate transactions are highly detailed. Home buyers and especially home sellers should never be the training ground for a new agent or loan officer to learn the ropes on their own. As a home buyer/ seller, do not be afraid to ask questions upfront and put the professional you choose to work with to the test. Any professional worth your time will welcome the questions and concerns. And that is a fact, because in such a situation, the professional has the opportunity to shine, which will help all parties understand one another and work better together. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. Agent In Training Everyone is a “newbie” at some time. We see managers training the teenager at Taco Bell or the “student driver” signs atop of cars. But when was the last time you saw a “real estate professional in training” badge on a real estate agent or loan officer? Never! A good real estate company will hold an agents hand during the “baby” stage. And a good lender will make sure a complete mortgage application is completed for a new loan officer. Sadly, what often takes place is a “sink or swim” training method and some poor soul’s home purchase is the training ground. We’ve seen this with both newbie real estate professionals and often with the “I’m using a relative” scenario. Is it a fair question to ask a professional how many transactions they have completed lately?…this year?…ever? ABSOLUTELY! However, as a home buyer, working with a new agent or loan officer isn’t necessarily a curse; just because a real estate professional is new to the business doesn’t mean that they have to be new to professionalism! Indeed, some new real estate professionals are years ahead of some of the “dead wood” agents that have been around for years. If a newbie has

BOB KRYGSHELD Summer is here – and so is vacation season. When you hit the road, you will enjoy getting away from your regular tasks, but there’s one part of your life that should never take a break – your investments. To keep your investments working consistently and efficiently for you, consider these suggestions: • Match the right investment with the right “job.” You hire an electrician to install a light fixture, you employ a plumber to clear a clogged drain, and you would not expect either one to work on the other’s project. In a way, this view of a division of labor is similar to how you might look at different investments. In general, you purchase stocks with the hope of achieving the growth necessary to help you meet long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. On the other hand, when you purchase certain fixedrate investments such as certificates of deposit (CDs) or money market accounts, you know they won’t provide as much growth potential, but are available to fund a shortterm goal – such as a dream vacation. • Evaluate investments’ performance relative to your goals. Some people think the only way to evaluate their investments’ performance is to track them against a well-known market index, such as the S&P 500. However, using an index as a measuring stick has some drawbacks, one of which is the lack of a personal connection to your situation. You can measure their performance by how effective they are in helping you move toward your financial objectives. For

example, if you need your portfolio to provide you with a certain rate of return to meet specific retirement goals at a designated age, but you find that you are not currently on track toward meeting these goals, you may need to adjust your investment mix to potentially provide you with a higher return. Be aware, though, that seeking higher return potential will likely mean taking on more risk. You may want to consult with a financial professional to make sure you find a risk/reward ratio suitable for your goals and risk tolerance. • Look for hardworking investments. Some investments work especially hard. Some stocks, or investments containing stocks, pay dividends. Instead of taking the dividends, you can choose to reinvest them, purchasing even more shares – and increased share ownership is one key to helping build financial resources for the long term. Dividend reinvestment is typically automatic, so once you have chosen this option, there’s really no extra work on your part. (Keep in mind, though, that companies are not obligated to pay dividends, and they can be reduced or eliminated at any time.) In the investing arena, as in many endeavors, hard work can be rewarding. So look for opportunities to keep your investments gainfully employed throughout your life.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Should I update my home? When we do decide to sell, the new owners are going to change things anyway, right? Answer: As Realtors, we get this question asked of us over and over. If you can afford to update your home, do it. Don’t go crazy with updates. Save your money, then update within your budget. Here are five good reasons why: 1. You will be able to enjoy these updates and feel proud of your home and what you have done. 2. It will add value to your home. Home values increase due to inflation and supply and demand. If you have a home that looks great, the buyer demand will be higher, and that will generate a higher home price. And, if the supply (homes currently for sale) is low, your homes value will increase even more. 3. If you choose not to update anything, then do NOT expect a quick sale and do NOT expect to receive the value that an updated home has. The buyer demand for your home will be lower. 4. If you cannot afford to update and remodel your home, there are other less expensive options you can take to get more value for your home and you can do them yourself— • Improve your curb appeal. Loop is Coming: Elon Musk to Provide High-Speed Transit System to Chicago
11
Speaking Of Seniors
Helped Widow In Carmel WOODROW WILCOX
The Loop transit system uses vehicles called electric skates based on the Tesla Model X.
A concept rendering shows how the Chicago O’Hare Loop station might look.
_______________________________
Yes, it’s true. Elon Musk’s The Boring Company will be providing a highspeed underground transit system for Chicago. With some edits, the following is taken from the website of The Boring Company (https://www.boringcompany. com/chicago/). The Boring Company (TBC) has been selected by the Chicago Infrastructure Trust (CIT), on behalf of the City of Chicago, to design, build, finance, operate and maintain an O’Hare Express service. The Chicago Express Loop will provide fast and convenient transportation between O’Hare Airport (Terminals 1-3) and Block 37 in downtown Chicago. The alignment map will be posted this summer. Loop is a high-speed underground public transportation system in which passengers are transported on autonomous electric skates traveling at 125-150 miles per hour. Electric skates will carry between 8 and 16 passengers. Electric skates are public transportation vehicles built on a modified Tesla Model X chassis. Electric skates are: • Safe. Electric skates are based on the Tesla Model X, recently named the

first and only SUV to achieve a NHTSA 5-Star safety rating in every category and subcategory. The Chicago Express Loop’s skates will be mechanically confined to a concrete track within the tunnel and operate under safety approvals issued by both federal and state agencies. • High-speed. Electric skates can travel at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. It will take 12 minutes to travel from O’Hare to downtown. The Chicago Express Loop will be three to four times faster than existing transportation systems between O’Hare Airport and downtown Chicago. • All-electric. Electric skates are battery-powered, zero-emissions vehicles. Each electric skate features a climate controlled cabin, luggage storage space, and Wi-Fi. Electric skates will leave each station as frequently as every 30 seconds. The Chicago Express Loop will operate 20 hours per day, seven days a week. So, why tunnels, you ask? The benefits of subsurface transportation systems include: • No surface noise and vibration. Tunnel construction and operation will be silent, invisible, and imperceptible at the surface.
• No communities divided with lanes and barriers. TBC will not use public surface right-of- way for construction or operation of its system. • Comfortable and convenient for passengers. Higher speeds and straighter alignments are possible due to fewer subsurface right-of-way constraints. • Weatherproof. Operation is unaffected by weather. Fares have not been finalized but will be less than half the typical price of taxi/ ride-share services, though higher than the Blue Line. And now we come to The Question: who is paying for this? The Boring Company. This project will be 100% privately funded. The Boring Company aims to alleviate soul-destroying traffic by constructing safe, affordable, and environmentallyfriendly public transportation systems. Comments, questions, and future station suggestions can be emailed to chicago@boringcompany.com. The Boring Company will update the project webpage over time to reflect the questions received. As of this printing, a time line for the project has not yet been released.
On May 4, 2018, I got a phone call from a widow in Carmel, Indiana. She called to thank me for working to stop an attempt to collect over $1,000 from her. During the time that her husband was in his last days of life, some medical bills were incurred. A bill for over $1,000 was sent to her. I investigated the matter and discovered that the medical firm or its billing service had filed the claim incorrectly. That caused the bill to be sent to the widow. I wrote to the firm, informed it of its error and asked the medical firm to file the claim correctly. The medical firm ignored my letter and continued to wrongfully bill the widow. So, I helped the widow to file a complaint against the medical firm with the Office of Consumer Protection of the Indiana Attorney General. Then, the medical firm paid attention and filed the claim correctly. Thus, my help saved the widow over $1,000. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency takes pride in “going the extra mile” to help our clients in such matters. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service, maybe you should switch to one that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

5 Tips for Parents to Get Kids Started on Retirement Planning It’s a whole new world for recent college graduates entering the workforce. Their priorities have changed; now bills, rent, and student loans lead their monthly list. Retirement planning ranks low as a priority for many young people in the early stages of their careers. About two-thirds of Millennials have nothing saved for retirement, according to a report by the National Institute on Retirement Security, and financial specialists say waiting to save could end up significantly delaying their retirement. This is when parents can step in and advise their young adult kids on how and why to start a retirement plan now— before too many years roll by. “Many people early in their work life figure retirement isn’t worth thinking about because it’s so far down the road, and they’ve got other obligations,” says Mark Henry, an estate planner, investment advisor and founder/CEO of Alloy Wealth Management (www.alloywealth.com). “But getting a late start is a big mistake. First of all, they’re missing out on valuable years of compounding returns. “Mom and dad are near or in retirement now and know the importance of saving as much as you can as soon as you can, especially in today’s world. They can be huge assets of knowledge and wisdom for their grown children right now.”
Henry offers five tips that parents can pass on to their youngadult children to help them start planning for retirement: Don’t wait. Explain to them the importance of beginning retirement savings just as that new job starts. “While they reason that their salary is low as they start out and they have bills, they need to make saving a disciplined habit, starting with just a little,” Henry says. “It’s not going to be easy to start saving later; you make more money, but then you’ve got more expenses. So start the important life habit now, and it will be easier then.” Learn the basics. Retirement planning can be a boring topic to some young people, but Henry says tying its importance to a new job that gives them a big opportunity to get ahead financially can instill pride in learning some of the retirement basics. “Young workers should at least understand the purpose of target-date funds,” Henry says. “Many plans offer these funds, which automatically adjust how a person’s money is invested based on their age and how close they are to retirement.” Capitalize on the 401(k). Their parents’ generation profited from this. “Throw in the fact that pensions are gone for the most part—and their parents’ generation felt the brunt of this fall-off—and the kids should pay heed to a great way to save,”
Book Review: Selling Dead People’s Things by Duane Scott Cerny

Henry says. “And the matching percentage a company offers on the 401(k) is an important consideration.” Increase contributions over time. Financial advisors generally recommend that you save between 10 percent and 15 percent of your pay for retirement. That’s usually too high for someone in their 20s, but Henry says, “You can work toward that goal by increasing your contribution by one or two percentage points every time you get a raise.” Stick to an honest budget. “Help them learn to budget money with three simple categories: give, save and spend,” Henry says. “With this foundation, they’ll learn how rewarding it is to set a savings goal and regularly put aside money to reach it, which is the basis for successful retirement investing.” “Parents today know the younger you are when you begin retirement investing, the more money you can have when it’s time to retire,” Henry says. “They need to emphasize that to their kids, and they can teach them by starting with simple concepts and building on them over time.” Mark Henry is founder/CEO of Alloy Wealth Management (www.alloywealth.com), as well as an investment advisor and certified estate planner. What did the one frog say to the other frog? “Time’s fun when you’re having flies.” That, of course, is a play on “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Over the years, I’ve noticed that many grandfather clocks feature these Latin words on their faces: “Tempus fugit.” Time flies. It certainly does, doesn’t it? Today is the first day of summer, the longest day of the year. Before we know it, the snow will fly. Just like that, the week is gone, your cake has an added candle, and the kids have grown and flown the coop. Time slips through our fingers, leaving us with regrets over missed moments, things unsaid, and ordinary opportunities lost in day to day life. Moses prayed, “Teach us to count our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). There’s nothing like a limited supply of something to make you value it. Treasure, measure, enjoy and
invest time with intention. Make time to enjoy someone in your life. Tomorrow she may not be there. Play with your kids. Tomorrow they’ll be out of the house. Say it now. Tomorrow you may not get the chance. Immerse yourself in a worthy cause. Tomorrow you may not be able to. Make amends. Tomorrow it may be too late. Be reconciled to God. Tomorrow you may not wake up. This doesn’t mean you should cram every available second with frenetic activity to make the most of it. Enjoy downtime this summer doing what you love most. Or absolutely nothing at all. Sit back, savor the sights, sips, scents, sensations and sounds and let them point you beyond to the Source of every blessing. Time is his gift—one his children will enjoy with him and others forever. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church
