Sienna Gonzalez, an East Chicago native and Bishop Noll class of 2014 alumna, recently graduated from Indiana University with a triple major in animal behavior, east Asian languages and cultures with a specialization in Chinese and biology. The first triple major in all three of those departments, Gonzalez is currently working at Lincoln Park Zoo as a behavioral enrichment intern in the primate house. _______________________________ Sienna Gonzalez, Bishop Noll class of 2014, had extra reason to celebrate when she graduated from Indiana University this spring. Out of 9,844 degrees given at the Bloomington commencement ceremony, Gonzalez was one of 41 graduates who earned a triple major; and her combination of animal behavior, east Asian languages and cultures with a specialization in Chinese, and biology makes her the first triple major in all three of those departments. Gonzalez, an East Chicago native, is currently interning at Lincoln Park Zoo as a behavioral enrichment intern in the primate house. During her six-month internship, she will evaluate enrichment items used in the primate enclosures and create a database of how they benefit the animal. Following her internship, she has been offered a position at the Shedd Aquarium in the marine mammal department. While a student at IU, Gonzalez completed an internship at the Bifengxia Panda Breeding Research Center in China. She also studied year four Chinese at Minzu University in Beijing, China. She began speaking Chinese at age 12 in the Bishop Noll

Prep Academy, the former Bishop Noll middle school. “My education at Noll impacted my ability to triple major. I began dual credit, ACP, and AP courses as a sophomore in high school and completed more than half a year in college credits, which allowed me to take more classes in my four years at IU. My college career began a week after graduating from Bishop Noll and every summer for the last four years I took courses that would allow me to complete three degrees.” Gonzalez plans to become certified in animal nutrition and then attend veterinary school in 2020, where she will specialize in large mammalian surgeries. “I am very grateful for the opportunities offered at Bishop Noll Institute and my instructors who encouraged me to continue my higher education. I am grateful for (Chinese teacher) Julie Niu who gave me the foundations of understanding and learning the Chinese language, because without her influence in my high school education I would have not been able to become one of the best students from my Chinese language department at Indiana University, with the most collegiate, national, and local certification and awards for proficiency.”

While watching and reading the news, it seems like people are growing farther and farther apart. From politics to religion, opinions are expressed with little regard for others—or building unity. The Nicene Creed was written in 325 AD, and has united churches from many parts of the world ever since. Catholics, Protestants and Eastern Orthodox religions regularly recite and sing the Nicene Creed as they gather together. The Nicene Creed is one of the most famous and influential creeds in the history of the church, because it settled the question of how Christians can worship one God and also claim that this God is three persons. Below is the Nicene Creed—a statement that has indeed stood the test of time. THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Turn of Phrase Between a rock and a hard place refers to a conundrum: finding
yourself faced with two equally unpleasant choices. This folksy saying actually had its origin in a Greek myth, in which Odysseus must sail his ship between Scylla, a treacherous shoal, and Charybdis, a whirlpool. Either way there will be losses; he must decide which will cost him the least.

Financial Advice Column
Work Toward Your Own Financial Independence Day BOB KRYGSHELD We’re getting close to the Fourth of July, our national Independence Day. This celebration may get you thinking of the many freedoms you enjoy. But have you thought of what you might need to do to attain financial freedom? Your first step is to define what financial independence signifies to you. For many people, it means being able to retire when they want to, and to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. So, if this is your vision as well, consider taking these steps: • Pay yourself first. If you wait until you have some extra money “lying around” before you invest for retirement, you may never get around to doing it. Instead, pay yourself first. This actually is not that hard to do, especially if you have a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, because your contributions are taken directly from your paycheck, before you even have the chance to spend the money. You can set up a similar arrangement with an IRA by having automatic contributions taken directly from your bank account. • Invest appropriately. Your investment decisions should be guided by your time horizon, risk tolerance and retirement goals. If you deviate from these guideposts – for instance, by taking on either too much or too little risk – you may end up making decisions that aren’t right for you and that may set you back as you pursue your financial independence. • Avoid financial “potholes.” The road to financial liberty will always be marked with potholes you should avoid. One such pothole is debt – the
higher your debt burden, the less you can invest for your retirement. It’s not always easy to lower your debt load, but do the best you can to live within your means. A second pothole comes in the form of large, unexpected short-term costs, such as a major home, auto or medical bill. To avoid dipping into your longterm investments to pay for these short-term costs, try to build an emergency fund containing six months’ to a year’s worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. • Give yourself some wiggle room. If you decide that to achieve financial independence, you must retire at 62 or you must buy a vacation home by the beach, you may feel disappointed if you fall short of these goals. But if you’re prepared to accept some flexibility in your plans – perhaps you can work until 65 or just rent a vacation home for the summer – you may be able to earn a different, but still acceptable, financial freedom. And by working a couple of extra years or paying less for your vacation home expenses, you may also improve your overall financial picture. Putting these and other moves to work can help you keep moving toward your important goals. When you eventually reach your own “Financial Independence Day,” it should certainly add some sparkle to your life. Unity Christian Academy Hires Head of School
Loukisha Smart-Pennix _______________________________ The Board of Directors of Unity Christian Academy (UCA) has announced that it has hired Loukisha Smart-Pennix to be its Head of School. According to UCA Board President Steve Blom, “We knew when we started our search over two years ago that it was going to be a challenge to find the person who was deeply committed to the unique vision for Christian education the Board has proposed, who was willing to take on the professional risk of a start-up school, and who possesses the skills we were looking for, especially in the areas of organizational leadership and networking. We thank God we have found that person in Loukisha Smart-Pennix. Her experience in leading educational organizations with significant structures and personnel is overshadowed only by her faith in Christ and the desire to see this affect every aspect of the learning culture at Unity Christian Academy.” Smart-Pennix is a graduate of National Louis University with a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Behavioral Science and a Master of Science in Human Services Administration, as well as an Associate of Arts Degree from

City Colleges of Chicago with a concentration in Social Service. She served for more than a decade as the Director of Children Services at the Chicago Department of Family Support Services followed by jobs in multiple capacities with the City of Chicago, including Support Service Coordinator and Assistant Director of Children Services. In 2014 she joined Illinois Action for Children as Vice President for Early Learning Programs, and was responsible for developing early learning programs and strengthening community systems in the suburbs of Cook County. She is eagerly embracing the UCA challenge. “This position will allow me the opportunity to merge all of my passions into one,” she said. “My faith and relationship in God, my love for engaging parents and community and my love for education are all crucial aspects of this job. UCA’s commitment to ‘doing High School differently’ aligns with my philosophy that young minds need to learn how to live in the world around them, not be afraid to profess their love for Christ and to make an impact on the world using the education that UCA will provide them through service and learning.” The Head of School is tasked to lead UCA effectively, ensuring high standards of academic excellence in well-rounded and holistic education programs. Smart-Pennix will be responsible for inspiring a Christcentered community of lifelong learners through leadership and management of staff as well as growth and financial sustainability of the campus. The Head of School is the chief executive officer and supervises either directly or indirectly all employees of the school. UCA is an ecumenical Christian High School which will be opening its doors to its first ninth-grade class on August 15, 2018. For its first year it will be located on the campus of Calvary Community Church, 16341 South Park Avenue in South Holland, Illinois. The school is still accepting enrollment for the 2018–2019 academic year. Further information can be found at www.WeAreUCA.org or by calling 708-980-1040.

MIKE BUDER Even though many of our local markets have stabilized over the past few years, some homeowners are still upside down on their mortgages. I still hear some folks talk about the option of a “strategic default”—but is this a good option? First, let’s look at the difference between a “regular default” and “strategic default.” A regular default occurs when the homeowner experiences a hardship, such as job loss, divorce, medical bills, etc. and becomes unable to make their mortgage payments. A strategic default is where the homeowner finds that their property is no longer worth what they owe, and they make a decision to just stop making their monthly mortgage payments and walk away. These homeowners can afford to make the monthly payment but they make a decision to default. They think that they can raise their credit scores by paying all of their other bills on time and eventually finance another home purchase. Don’t count on it! Homeowners that default due to a hardship normally must wait 2 to 5 years before buying a home again. Walk-aways may be facing double that time. It could be as long as 8 years before a strategic defaulter will be able to buy again. Credit scores are only part of a lender’s decision

to extend credit to a buyer. Homeowners need to know that underwriters will scrutinize their records very closely, and if they find no hardship factors that lead to the default (job loss, health issues, divorce), the repaired credit score will not compensate for the black mark of a walk-away. It should be noted that Fannie Mae (the government-backed lending giant), is putting into place measures to discourage homeowners from considering walking away. Fannie Mae will begin locking out such borrowers from getting new mortgages for 7 years. In addition, they are going to go after strategic defaulters for the money they are owed in the states where they are permitted to do so. Unfortunately, many people today are making real estate decisions not based on facts, but on urban myths passed along by friends, neighbors and financially broke relatives. They very well could end up being poor decisions. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. Speaking Of Seniors
Lowell Senior Got Fake Bill WOODROW WILCOX On May 7, 2018, I wrote a letter to a medical billing firm about its fake bill to a senior citizen of Lowell, Indiana. Medical billing firms make mistakes all the time. Sometimes, when a billing firm or its employees make mistakes, they try to get senior citizens to pay FAKE BILLS. That was the case with a bill that was sent to our client. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical billing firm about its FAKE BILL to our client. “Our client sent to our office a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $760 on Account Number XXXXX for services rendered on 4/4/17 and 4/12/17. THE BILL IS FALSE. “First, you filed the claim almost a year after the dates of service. So, your staff probably misplaced the file and very nearly didn’t file it at all. “Second, you filed the claims directly with a secondary insurer while the patient has Medicare as the primary insurer. Didn’t your personnel notice that this patient had Medicare? “If you are contracted with Medicare, then you have an obligation to file the claim with Medicare. You filed the claim INCORRECTLY. “So, do the right thing and file the claim CORRECTLY and don’t bother our client with this bill any more.” All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to help our clients fight bad medical billing. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service, maybe you should switch to an insurance agency that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Athlete’s Feet
Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We just had a home inspection on the home we are buying. We thought the home was in excellent condition, but the home inspector really scared us. Although the sellers are willing to do some of our requests, they refuse to do everything on the inspection report. The inspector said the furnace is near the end of its life. The bathroom fan is vented into the attic. The spindles on the staircase railing are too far apart, which could create a safety hazard. These are the main issues we are concerned about with the home and we are considering walking away from the deal. What is your opinion? Answer: If you don’t want the house in the condition that the sellers are leaving it, then don’t buy it. But, be sure you weigh the good with the bad. You are not buying new so there is age to the home. If the furnace has been inspected and is in good working order, why should they have to replace it? Did they hide the furnace during your viewing, so you could not visually inspect it? Did you ask the ages of the major components before you wrote the offer to

purchase? If there were no problems in the attic from this exhaust fan, why should the sellers cut a hole into the house to install a vent fan when it’s been perfectly fine for all these years? When the home was built, the spindle spacing was acceptable. It was code at the time. Why don’t you change the spacing if you think it creates a safety problem? This sounds fair to us. We don’t feel sellers should be held hostage by all the buyer demands over a used home. If the inspection is not acceptable to you, and an agreement cannot be reached in regards the home inspection, then don’t buy the house and look for something else. By the way, lots of luck trying to find the “perfect” house. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of Selling your Home? ST.ANDREW THE APOSTLE SUMMER FEST OFFERS FOOD, MUSIC AND FUN: T he a n nua l Su m mer Fest iva l at t he oldest church in Calumet City put on a great fest last weekend as it does each year. Pictured here are some out of town visitors who come back each year just for this event. They are Carol Janiak, of South Bend, Indiana, Mary Ann Jakubielski of Lowell, Indiana,. Kathy Futa and Annette and Ted Noell, also of the South Bend area. “We came for the food, music and fun,”noted Carol Janiak. The music had begun and before we knew it, Helen and Bernie Bednarek were dancing the Polka! Ca lumet Cit y friends Clyde and Fran Toczydlowski saw the Terpsichore and came over to tease the Bednareks. Fran, a superb cook, had been in the church kitchen for the past 3 days creating the delicious food being offered during the weekend festival. The Todczydlowski’s family was in town, including their son and grandsons. The grandsons headed for the bounce house to burn off some energy with Grandpa Clyde. Also on hand for the fun was Calumet City resident Patty Partyka and many locals who live nearby. Next up will be the St. Victor Fest, set for mid-July. ***

MARY BIESIADA OF CUNIS ICE CREAM AND CANDIES DISHES UP DELICIOUS! Ma r y has been a smiling face at t he South Holland confectionery emporium for many years now. She is pictured here recently as she chats with N 2 N about the fresh peach ice cream now available at the ice cream parlor (1030 E. 162nd) which has been in her family for many years. Mary’s Mom still makes the fresh peach ice cream from tast y Michigan peaches and is available most of t he summer. She a lso ta kes the great ice cream ‘on the road’ so to speak each year during the annual Labor Day Heritage Festival at the Paarlberg Farm in South Holland. As you can see in the photo, this place is a sweet tooth lover’s delight. Cu n i s ma ke s t hei r ow n choc olate s and ever y kind of chocolate candy in addition to offering their own roasted nuts. If we want to make a hit with our gift giving, how about a chocolate Thank You card or anniversary card or a small set of golf clubs (or any other industry) made entirely of their luscious home made chocolate? Go there. You won’t be disappointed. ***

Tech Conference Challenges Schools to Build AR Mars Colony The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 2018 Conference has just ended in Chicago, but the adventure is just beginning for schools who opt to participate in creating a Mars Colony in augmented reality (AR). The challenge originated with 3DBear, a leading provider of engaging AR solutions for education. The challenge is right out of a Hollywood movie: A U.S. astronaut is stranded on Mars; how are you going to save him? And as a teacher, what science could you teach your students as they try? Students and teachers will have the chance to save that astronaut in AR during the Northern Illinois STEM Read Professional Development Party in Space. The event will feature Andy Weir, author of the best-selling novels The Martian For sale: 55 gallon BBQ grill, asking $75 or less offer. Call 708-224-5216
and Artemis. Using 3DBear’s app and a virtual gallery of objects in Thingiverse, teams will develop 3D objects and create a colony on Mars. They will also consider the scientific principles behind growing plants and recycling water on their colony, and will use a Makerbot 3D printer to bring their 3DBear AR design to life. “This gamified experience will allow educators to see a whole different side of teaching students everything from creativity to STEM topics, said Jussi Kajala, the CEO of 3DBear, Inc. “When students are allowed to use their imagination and create their own objects, the possibilities are endless. 3DBear’s integration of AR, 3D modelling, and 3D printing is a fun, technology-enriched way of

engaging learners across all subjects, allowing students to create three-dimensional scenes right on their mobile devices. Students of all ages can use 3DBear to actively design and create mixed-reality scenes, then bring their models to life using a 3D printer. Teachers can create transformational learning experiences for students by joining 3DBear’s AR Innovator Program. The program is a community of AR innovators, and also includes in-classroom professional development sessions. For a limited time, 100 schools can get 50% off the program fee as a grant. The program runs from May 2018 until June 2019. Schools can join until September 2018. To register for the event, go to https:// registeruo.niu.edu/iebms/wbe/wbe_p1_main. aspx?oc=40&cc=WBE4016057. being offered to ISTE Conference attendees. ISTE (www.iste.org) inspires the creation of solutions and connections that improve opportunities for all learners by delivering: practical guidance, evidence-based professional learning, virtual networks, thought-provoking events and the ISTE Standards. 3DBear (3dbear.io) provides schools and educational institutions with relevant, contemporary content and game-like software that make learning engaging and fun. It does this by integrating 3D modelling, AR, and 3D printing into the classroom. Its engaging pedagogical modules complement the offerings of hardware and CAD software providers, setting them apart from gaming and conventional e-learning platforms.
