COUPON The South Suburban Chicago Chapter of the Links presented $15,000 in scholarship funds to South Suburban College students Jasmine Carter (Country Club Hills), Cherise Miskell (Dolton), and Adeline Hodge (South Holland) at the SSC Foundation’s Academic Achievement Reception May 8th. All three women are excellent students with GPAs ranging from 3.2-4.0, and Ms. Carter is studying Radiologic Technology, Miskell is a Science major, and Hodge is pursuing her Business degree. The South Suburban Chicago Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, has served the South Suburban community for over 40 years by providing financial and educational support with social and civic awareness to enrich and ensure the cultural and economic growth of our communities. The Links has had a relationship with the SSC Foundation

for nearly 10 years, sharing in likemissions and providing scholarship funding. “The South Suburban College Foundation’s mission to support the educational objectives of SSC with the primary focus on student scholarships aligns with our mission to give back to our community by providing scholarships to deserving students,” said Jacqueline James Lewis, Links President. “The South Suburban Chicago Links are extremely grateful for the opportunity to support the educational component of this mission by providing three, $5,000 scholarships. We are so pleased with this partnership and the newly established South Suburban Chicago Chapter of The Links Scholarship Fund.” The SSC Foundation provides students of all ages, backgrounds and academic pursuits with critical scholarship assistance. Many SSC

students are struggling to balance family, employment, and school responsibilities while they are often unable to receive Financial Aid. Scholarship money is raised primarily through the annual spring Showcase Gala and fall Scholarship Donor Drive, providing both a charitable gift opportunity and tax-deduction for all donors. The SSC Foundation once again awarded over $100,000 in scholarship funds for Academic Year 2019 and has now surpassed $2 million in total scholarships since 1989. All three of the Links recipients said their scholarships would have a significant, lasting impact on their lives and Ms. Carter added, “This scholarship is just the beginning to a new journey and helping me to complete my goals.” For more information, please contact the Foundation Office at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2463 or foundation@ssc.edu.

Bishop Noll veteran teacher Elizabeth Conley received the American Legion, Department of Indiana’s 1st District 2017 9-12 Educator of the Year award earlier this school year. She was chosen for her continued work to educate the future of Indiana. Conley retired this summer after 48 years in education and 28 years at Bishop Noll. ______________________________________

have Conley first as a teacher and then as a colleague. “As a teacher, Mrs. Conley always had me thinking and to date, she still has me thinking about the right way to approach obstacles and challenges. In many ways, she still is my teacher,” Pastrick said. Conley said her favorite part about Noll is her students. “She is a true inspiration for students and teachers alike, no matter what type of field you are going to go into from teacher, family person, or whatever. Mrs. Conley is the perfect example of adults that we need in the world for being not only open but also caring and friendly to all people around,” said Abel Alejandr, a 2018 Noll grad. “Everything that I’ve done, especially at times when I had a pivotal fork in the road moment, one of the voices I have in my head coaching me on things is Mrs. Conley,” said David Negrete, Bishop Noll Class of 1999. When asked what is important about Catholic education, Conley said, “The Lord. You get to pray.” She also said that the Bishop Noll student is like no other student. The diversity and range of student is amazing and what she loved about coming to Noll every day. Conley has no special plans in honor of her retirement. However, she plans on traveling with her husband. Although she will no longer be a full-time teacher, Conley will teach theater part-time at Calumet College of St. Joseph and also plans on subbing at Noll periodically.

Put The Right Hat On! MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate industry, mortgage rules and the way business is done change daily. Whether you are a buyer, a seller or a real estate agent you need to expect problems. Are you and your agent problem solvers or solution seekers? Seriously, what do you focus on? Do you focus on the problem or do you focus on the solution? There is a big difference between these seemingly similar approaches. Here’s my take…let’s say the home inspection didn’t come out quite the way the seller or buyer wanted it to. Some agents get their shorts in a bunch and “blame” the clueless inspector as if he is the problem, and other agents get busy finding solutions to what needs to be fixed along with the buyer and seller. Which agent is bringing better energy to the transaction? Which agent comes across more professional, trustworthy and with the ability to get the job done? Seems pretty simple to me. I mean think about it—if what we focus on expands—then why in the world would you focus on the problem? Why not look for solutions? I know this may seem “simple” but I don’t think it’s as simple as we all believe.

In fact it’s quite profound! It’s a lot more energizing to look for solutions. And it certainly is more creative and satisfying as well. Think about this if you’ve got a “hitch-in-the-git-along” in your real estate transaction. Approach the situation with your solution-seeker hat rather than your problem solver hat. Visualize the solution hat on your head (ok-I know this is sounding a little airy fairy but it works). Take the time to notice how much smoother the situation seems to get handled and how quickly solutions come to mind. Notice how the other parties in the transaction respond to you. And —notice how you feel! Seriously—if you practice solution-seeking enough it can change your life for the good—not to mention help to get your real estate transaction closed. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. Bishop Noll Institute veteran teacher Elizabeth Conley has retired after a total of 48 years in education. Conley, who served as a speech, theater, debate and physical education teacher, has taught at BNI for 28 years. She also served as head of the theater department and as director of countless productions. Conley was a beloved consultant for students. Every school year, she attended one of the four-day long Kairos trips with the junior class. These Catholic retreats use personal talks from peer and adult leaders, as well as discussions, periods of silence and reflection and integrated prayer experiences to help teens discover God in all things. “I’ve definitely felt the positive ends of her presence. She has helped me in numerous ways with my personal life, daily life, and school life. School has stopped being a chore but something enjoyable solely based off her antics,” said Alexis Rodriguez, a 2018 Bishop Noll graduate. Conley was a professional actress in Seattle when a friend asked her to temporaily teach her theater class. “I fell in love with teaching theater and directing,” Conley said. Prior to teaching at Bishop Noll, she taught at schools in Illinois, Indiana, Seattle, and Albuquerque. Conley has a long lasting effect on not only her students, but her colleagues as well. Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick, Bishop Noll Class of 2001, said it was interesting to

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We just sold our home. It was stressful for us, but our Realtor has this stress with every deal. What do you enjoy about selling Real Estate? Answer: Let me answer it this way: We are quite sure that we have the best job in the world! It’s not an easy job by any means. It takes dedication, patience, creativity, resourcefulness and a good sense of humor to do what we do each and every day. But when you take a step back, you realize that there are not many people who can say it is their job to help make dreams come true! So, as we drive through our neighborhood this upcoming holiday or head off to the home of a family member or friend, we will be sure to pay special attention to the smells from the BBQ grills and the sound

Homewood’s South Suburban Housing Center Joins National Federal Court in Fair Housing Complaint Against Bank of America On June 26, 2018 the Homewood based South Suburban Housing Center (SSHC), joined with the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), HOPE Fair Housing Center of Wheaton, as well as 17 other fair housing organizations across the U.S., and two homeowners in Maryland to file a federal lawsuit, alleging Fair Housing Act violations against Bank of America, N.A., Bank of America Corp., and Safeguard Properties Management, LLC (“Bank of America/Safeguard”). The lawsuit alleges Defendants intentionally failed to provide routine exterior maintenance and marketing at Bank of Americaowned homes in working- and middle-class African-American and Latino neighborhoods in 37 metropolitan areas, while they consistently maintained similar bank-owned homes in comparable white neighborhoods. The data presented in the federal complaint, which is supported by substantial photographic evidence, shows a glaring pattern of discriminatory conduct by Bank of America/ Safeguard. The investigation documented 37 objective aspects of routine exterior maintenance that are com-mon factors used in the preservation maintenance industry. More than 35,000 photos document the relevant conditions of the homes. In neighborhoods of color, Plaintiffs found evidence of poor maintenance such as wildly overgrown grass and weeds, unsecured doors and windows, damaged steps and handrails, accumulated trash and debris, unsecured pools, graffiti, and even dead animals decaying in yards. Plaintiffs investigated more than 1,600 Bank of America-owned homes in workingand middle-class white, African-American, and Latino

neighborhoods. The lawsuit alleges that Bank of America-owned homes in predominantly white working- and middle-class neighborhoods are far more likely to have the lawns mowed and edged regularly, invasive weeds and vines removed, windows and doors secured or repaired, debris and trash removed, leaves raked, and graffiti erased from the property. In the Chicago area, SSHC and HOPE investigated 90 Bank of America properties. Examples of some of the disparities found include: 40.7% of the REO properties in predominantly white neighborhoods had fewer than 5 maintenance or marketing deficiencies, while only 7.9% properties in communities of color had fewer than 5 deficiencies; and 92.1% of REO properties in neighborhoods of color had 5 or more marketing or maintenance deficiencies, while only 59.3% of white neighborhood properties had 5 or more deficiencies. SSHC also investigated 22 Bank of America properties in the Gary area of northwest Indiana. Results from these investiga-tions found 87.5% of properties in white neighborhoods had fewer than 5 maintenance or marketing deficiencies, while none of the properties in neighborhoods of color had fewer than 5 deficiencies. In response to today’s filing, Lisa Rice, President/CEO of NFHA stated, “Bank of America and Safeguard’s intentional failure to correct their discriminatory treatment in African American and Latino neighborhoods—the same communities hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis—is systemic racism. The purposeful neglect of bank-owned homes in communities of color devalues the properties and the lives of the families in the neighborhoods around them.” SSHC Executive Director, John Petruszak,

Habitat For Humanity Receives $65,000 Anonymous Donation

An anonymous donor gifted Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana with a $65,000 donation toward building a home in Hammond. “We were thrilled to receive this very generous gift which will help another family remove themselves from a high-rent situation and into their very own home,” said Executive Director Dawn Michaels. “We send a very genuine thank you to this kindhearted donor.” While this donation will fund a significant portion of a three-bedroom, one bathroom, single-family home in Hammond, an additional $30,000 will need to be raised before construction can begin. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana ensures all funding is received before they begin their volunteer-based construction. “We give a hand up, not a hand out” Michaels stated. “Habitat is unique in that it truly breaks the cycle of poverty for a family.

When we sell a home to a partner family, they are no longer paying high rent in substandard living conditions and can use their new disposable income towards education and investing into their local economy.” Habitat for Humanity builds and sells affordable homes to struggling, working families. Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana has served over 100 families throughout Lake County. Habitat homeowners must dedicate 300 ‘sweat equity’ hours into their home. Upon completion, each home is purchased by the partner family through a zero-interest, 25year mortgage. Partner families pay property taxes and insurance. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana will continue their fundraising efforts to reach their goal for the Hammond home. If you would like to donate, please contact 219923-7265 ext. 304 or www.nwihabitat.org.

commented, “The south suburbs continue to be the slowest recovering, hardest hit area of the Chicago housing market. Bank of America’s failure to properly market and maintain REO properties, they are responsible for in communities of color, is prolonging the revival.” Details and additional information about SSHC’s investigation of Bank of America’s REO properties, including NFHA’s news release and the federal complaint filed today, can be found at www.southsuburbanhousingcenter.org. The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present a new exhibition located in the Dulgar Gallery on SSC’s Main Campus in South Holland. An exhibition of art works by Brent Fogt titled “Re Pose” is on display through August 30, 2018. Reception date for Fogt is to be announced. Brent Fogt has completed artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Djerassi Resident Artists Program, I-Park Foundation and Yaddo. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. Fogt describes his art in this way: “My research and artwork focus on how small, discrete actions—additions, subtractions, divisions—accumulate over time. I create slender, off-kilter sculptures by assembling fallen tree branches, discarded furniture, worn-out clothing, and other cast-off materials that I rescue from the streets and dumpsters of my Chicago neighborhood. I suture the branches and prefabricated furniture by screwing, wrapping, or crocheting them together with cotton yarn or jute. The resulting sculptures may hang from ceilings, lean against walls, or rest precariously on floors. By placing humble, weathered materials into predefined architectural spaces, my artwork points to daily activities like standing, sitting and walking that require us to physically balance ourselves and our surroundings.” The public is welcome to visit the art exhibition and reception at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is on the first floor. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2445 or ext. 2316, or visit www.ssc.edu/ art. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

On May 23, 2018, a client brought to me three bills and a payment demand letter from a collection law firm. The client is from Schererville, Indiana. I reviewed the papers and started checking the facts. I learned that for the three dates when our client got some medical service, Medicare never reported the claims to our client’s Medicare supplement insurance company. That is not the fault of our senior citizen client. Nor is it the fault of her insurance company or our insurance agency. It is Medicare’s fault. To fix this problem for our client, I wrote a letter to both the hospital and the collection law firm. In the letter, I explained what the problem was and that Medicare caused it – not the patient. I explained what needed to be done so that our client’s insurance company could get the essential information that it needed to pay the claims. All I asked them to do was cooperate to get the bills paid and not harm our client financially. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency has built a reputation for helping our senior citizen clients because we really care about them. If your insurance agent or agency does not give such a high level of customer service, maybe you should switch to an insurance agency that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems.com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Joliet Catholic Academy Tuition Transfer Grant Program Joliet Catholic Academy is proud to announce our continued participation in the Joliet Diocese Tuition Transfer Grant program for the 2018-2019 school year. Students entering grades ten through 12 who transfer from any public, private, charter or home school are eligible to receive a $4,000 transfer discount. ($3,000 discount off the 1st year enrolled and $1,000 off the 2nd year). *Students transferring from another Catholic school within the Dioceses of Joliet, Peoria, Rockford, Springfield, and the Archdiocese of Chicago are not eligible. Rev. John Belmonte, S.J., Ph.D., Joliet Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools says, “the purpose of this grant is to provide parents, who may not be able to afford a

Catholic education, with a choice as to where they want to send their children to school. We like to say “We Teach More” in our Catholic schools, as evident by our students’ academic success, and we want to provide an opportunity for more children to attend one of our outstanding Catholic schools.” Current JCA parents will benefit from a student referral program in place where they will receive $500 off tuition for each grade 10 through 12 transfer student that enrolls at JCA. The $500 tuition reduction for referring families will be awarded when the referred student(s) begin to attend their second year at JCA. Transferring students will recognize the referring family in a section of the JCA Transfer Application. The high schools of the Joliet Diocese and Joliet Catholic

Financial Advice Column

Lost & Found

Questions to Ask Your Financial Advisor BOB KRYGSHELD You should always be able to ask as many questions as you’d like when working with your financial advisor. So, before you have your annual review, think carefully about what you’d like to ask. Here are a few suggestions: • Are my goals still realistic? When you first began working with your financial advisor, you may well have articulated a number of financial goals. For example, you might have said that you wanted to pay for most of your children’s college educations, or that you wanted to retire at a certain age, or that you wanted to travel often during your retirement. When you meet with your financial advisor, you’ll certainly want to ask if you’re still on track toward meeting these goals. If you are, you can continue with the financial strategies you’ve been following; but if you aren’t, you may need to adjust them. • Am I taking on too much – or too little – risk? The financial markets always fluctuate, and these movements will affect the value of your investment portfolio. If you watch the markets closely every day and track their impact on your investments, you may find yourself fretting considerably over your investments’ value and wondering if you are taking on too much investment risk for your comfort level. Conversely, if you think that during an extended period of market gains your own portfolio appears to be lagging, you might feel that you should be investing more aggressively, which entails greater risk. In any case, it’s important that you know your own risk tolerance and use it as a guideline for making investment choices. • How will changes in my life affect my investment strategy? Over time, you may experience any number of major events, such as marriage, children, new jobs and so on. When you meet with your financial advisor, you will want to discuss these types of changes, because they can affect your long-term goals and, consequently, your investment decisions. • How are external forces affecting my investment portfolio? Generally speaking, you will want to create an investment strategy that’s based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. And, as mentioned above, you may need to adjust your strategy based on changes in your life. But should you also make changes based on outside forces, such as interest rate movements, political events, new legislation or news affecting industries in which you have invested substantially? Try not to make long-term investment decisions based on short-term news. Yet, talk with your financial advisor to make sure your investment portfolio is not out of alignment with relevant external factors. By making these and other inquiries, you can help yourself stay informed on your overall investment picture and what moves, if any, you should make to keep advancing toward your goals. A financial advisor is there to provide you with valuable expertise – so take full advantage of it. US Supreme Court Decides for Janus Against AFSCME On June 27, 2018 the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Illinois native Mark Janus in the monumental case for worker freedom and free speech, Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The decision overturned Abood v. Detroit Board of Education (1977), in which the Court ruled that unions can require nonunion public employees to pay fees to cover collective bargaining costs. The Janus decision now expands worker freedom across the country, as more than five million non-union public employees in 22 states that don’t have right-to-work laws, including Illinois, are no longer forced to fund political advocacy without their consent. Americans for Prosperity Illinois State Director Andrew Nelms issued the following statement: “This decision is a huge victory for workers, not just in Illinois but across the country. Forcing public workers to fund political activity to keep a job and support their Truck for sale: 2003 Chevy Avalanche, original owner, loaded, well maintained. 119,000 miles / some rust. family is a violation of the Constitution. This case vindicates our activists who have long asserted that forcing workers to fund political activity without their consent was a violation of the fundamental and unassailable right to free speech.” At issue in this case was the power of labor unions to collect “fair share” or “agency fees” from public employees who have opted out of the union in their workplace. Governor Bruce Rauner initiated the case in 2015 in one of his first acts as Illinois governor. Mark Janus is a public employee in Illinois who challenged the condition that public workers who are not union members are nonetheless required to pay fees to union officials as a condition of working for the government and serving the public. Janus argued because his employer’s collective bargaining directly affects public policy issues like pension liabilities, taxes, spending, and more, that he should not be compelled to fund this lobbying and political speech.

Updated Indiana Notary Laws Protect Notaries and Clients Indiana’s updated notary laws, passed by the General Assembly in 2017, took effect on July 1, 2018 and will provide better protections for notaries and their clients, including changes in how notaries are commissioned for public office. A notary public is a public officer of the state, authorized by law to certify documents, take affidavits, and administer oaths. Currently, notaries must live in Indiana, acquire a $5,000 bond and are limited to charge a $2 fee for services. Notary regulations were updated to modernize Indiana’s notary laws and bring them in line with the rest of the nation. “The work of notaries touches many aspects of everyday life, and you never know how important the service is until you need one,” said Secretary of State Connie Lawson. “Many transactions such as purchasing a home or car require notarized documents, and it is imperative that these transactions are handled with utmost care. This law opens up opportunities for additional notaries while ensuring integrity and oversight.” The law will increase security for notaries and their clients by raising the bond requirement to $25,000 (the average settlement against a notary is $18,000). By raising the bond, notaries will be able to cover expenses that may occur as a result of an improper notarization and clients will be able to recover damages due to fraudulent acts. The Secretary of

State’s office, which issues notary commissions, will now keep electronic copies of bonds. Previously, no proof of bonding was required. Many notaries are required to travel to notarize documents, and the new law allows notaries to charge travel expenses at the federal mileage rate plus up to $10 for each notarized signature. It is common practice for many businesses to have someone in the office commissioned as a notary. This has been a problem in communities along the Indiana border. Many businesses employ individuals who live out of the state, and these employees were automatically disqualified from being an Indiana notary due to their residence. To eliminate this inconvenience, Indiana now allows individuals primarily employed in the state of Indiana to become Indiana notaries. To ensure all notaries understand their role and the new changes, educational requirements are now required for all notaries. Notaries will be required to take an educational course at the time of commission and re-commission. Previously, applicants went through a short training session prior to receiving their commission, although unlimited guesses were allowed and there was no pass/fail threshold. Under the new law, notaries must pass an exam as part of the application process. Additionally, beginning in 2020, notaries

will be required to take a continuing education course every two years. This course will refresh a notary’s knowledge of their responsibilities and help reduce the number of errors. All notaries commissioned before July 1, 2018 will be grandfathered in for the duration of their current commission. For instance, if a notary has posted a freehold bond worth $5,000 and their commission does not expire until 2022, they will be allowed to keep their current bond until they renew their commission, at which point they will renew under the new bond requirements. No existing commissions will be revoked and notaries will not need to make adjustments until their existing commission expires. About Notaries Public A notary public is a public officer of the state, authorized by law to certify documents, take affidavits, and administer oaths. Notarization is important as an attestation that the signature or signatures on a document have been witnessed, and the parties identified by an impartial public official. Because transactions may be between virtual strangers, notarization serves to protect all parties by assuring their identities. Notaries are expected to be impartial, unbiased and without a financial interest in the agreements they notarize. A notary public is appointed for an eight year term, and their jurisdiction is statewide.

CALUMET CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT HOSTS JUNE CH A MBER MEET ING : Calumet City Chief of Police Christopher Fletcher rolled out the red carpet for Cha mber members a nd t hei r g uests We d n e s d a y Ju n e 2 7, 2 018 f o r t h e Cha mber’s June Net work ing meeting at the new Police and Fire Department Training Center, 24 State Street. The centerpiece of the event was the Mobile Command Van, parked in front for a tour. In any uncertain times, when any communications systems may be down, the mobile command center could serve all the needs of the department should a ll other systems fail, Fletcher noted du r i ng h is rema rk s to t he cha mber members. “We could take it any where and run the department from there,” Fletcher explained. The training center is now about two years old and serves in a variety of capacities for both the Calumet city Police and Fire Departments. While members and guests enjoyed a delicious catered taco lunch, Fletcher extolled t he v i r t ues of not on ly t he va n but of the newly installed “Shot’s Spotter” program, which can inform the police of the location of any gun shots in the city. The program is the only of it’s kind in the south suburbs and is the same as that of the Chicago Police Department. Fletcher was a 30 year veteran of the CPD before coming to Ca lumet Cit y. While explaining the inner workings of the department, the chief brought his Assistant Chief David Owaczko forward and to speak to his duties along with the 911 Director Michelle Uginchus and the GR ATE Officer Marissa Chavez. They are pictured here with Fletcher in the center along with Community Relations Director Billy Siems,, Rob Janiga, Chief of Patrol, and Officer Jason Menclewicz. ***

RICHARD ZEKVELD One of my kids burst into the house, breathless with excitement. “We found a way to filter water!” We were visiting my parents on the farm. My kids were down at the creek, playing ‘Survival’. They foraged for berries. Success! Now for a water supply. Their solution was innovative: creek water filtered through a sand-filled sock. First things first: kudos to their creativity. Long may it live! I’m excited to see where it takes them. Unfortunately, I was the kill-joy who informed them that their filtration system was not ‘Papa-approved’. I didn’t freak out, because I’ve ingested my share of dirt and creek water over the years. And I think I turned out okay (though some would beg to differ). As their father, however, I’m responsible for what enters their bodies. I’m all the more responsible for what enters their hearts and minds! That’s true of all parents and guardians. It’s our job to monitor what

our children consume. And to ensure the right filters are in place. Every day, our kids ingest images and messages that impact their emotional and spiritual well-being. Are we tuned in to what they’re ingesting at school – from educators and peers alike? Are we tuned in to what they’re ingesting from their devices, right under our noses? Have we installed filters on our own mouths to ensure our words promote their emotional and spiritual well-being? Of course, we can’t shield our kids from all toxic inputs. Conversation that engages their hearts is the best way to help them filter what they consume. Above all, we need to direct their hearts and minds with what is satisfying and stimulating. First and foremost, that is the gospel of Jesus Christ and the glory of God revealed in Scripture and creation. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church

Celebrity Suicides May Inspire Copycats: 6 Preventative Steps suicides. It’s called “suicide contagion.â€? Dr. Bacchus agrees with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline that there are several steps you can take if you know of someone who may be contemplating suicide. • Ask the question. Asking the question “Are you thinking about suicide?â€? communicates that you’re open to speaking about suicide in a non-judgmental and supportive way. Asking in this direct, unbiased manner, can open the door for effective dialogue. Do not ever promise to keep their thoughts of suicide a secret. • Listen. Make sure you take their answers seriously and do not to ignore them. Listening to their reasons for being in such emotional pain, as well as listening for any potential reasons they want to continue to stay alive, are both incredibly important. Help them focus on their reasons for living and avoid trying to impose your reasons for them to stay alive. • Find Out If They Are Safe. Determine if they already attempted suicide before they talked to you. Do they have a specific, detailed plan? What’s the timing? What sort of access to do they have to their planned method? • Be there. This could mean being physically present for someone, speaking with them on the phone, or any other way that shows support for the person at risk. Make sure you follow through with the ways in which you say you’ll be able

Many people consciously or subconsciously emulate celebrities – they dress like them, talk like them and sometimes even have cosmetic surgery so they can look like them. Some people may even want to die like them. With the media coverage of the recent suicides of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and fashion designer Kate Spade, psychiatrists such as Dr. Soroya Bacchus (www. soroyabacchusmd.com), author of How to Detox Yourself from Alcohol, are concerned about a potential rise in the suicide rate in the coming months. “We are a copycat society, Bacchus says. “But there is more to it than just that. A celebrity suicide may be the real trigger for someone who is already contemplating suicide. Suicides rose nearly 10% higher than expected in the months following actor Robin Williams’ death in August 2014, according to a Columbia University study in February. Suicides involving the method Williams used (suffocation) spiked 32% over that time. In the months following Marilyn Monroe’s death, suicide rates jumped 12% in the United States compared to the previous year. Mental health experts say exposure to media coverage of a high-profile suicide, especially coverage which fixates on the gratuitous details of a person’s death, can lead to more

to support the person. Never promise more than you can deliver. • Help Them Connect. Helping someone with thoughts of suicide connect with ongoing supports (like the Lifeline, 800-273-8255) can help them establish a safety net for those moments they find themselves in a crisis. • Follow Up. After your initial contact with a person experiencing thoughts of suicide, and after you’ve connected them with the immediate support systems they need, make sure to follow-up with them to see how they’re doing. Bacchus says it is incredibly important for anyone who knows someone who may be contemplating suicide to seek help for them immediately regardless of when they become aware of the situation. But she said during this time of increased celebrity suicide press coverage, it is even more important than usual. Soroya Bacchus, M.D., (www.soroyabacchusmd.com) author of How to Detox Yourself from Alcohol, is a quadruple board-certified psychiatrist specializing in addiction medicine and psychiatry. She has treated patients with addiction issues for 22 years. She has been interviewed on such television shows as Good Morning America and has been quoted in the New York Times, the Huffington Post and other print and online publications.
