Community Healthcare’s Rehab Tracker Provides Feedback for Patient, Family Rehabilitation patients at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System have help in the palm of their hand tracking progress toward their recovery goals. RehabTracker is a phone app that enables the patient to view updates from their therapy team, track progress on areas of functional improvement and share the results with designated friends and family. Through a partnership with Kindred Hospital Rehabilitation Services (KHRS), this app has been made available to Community Healthcare System patients. “For patients who have had a stroke or an injury such as a hip fracture, RehabTracker enables them to view their goals, track progress and enhance communication in their support circle,” explained Muhammad Khan, physical therapist and program director, St. Catherine Hospital, Rehab Unit where the app was first piloted by KHRS for the hospitals of Community Healthcare System. Family members “see” a corresponding daily grid to follow their loved ones’ results on their smart device. There are 18 different goals that are being measured ranging from bathing, upper body dressing, lower body dressing, fully assisted, partially independent to fully independent. After uploading designated contacts from their address book, the patient can choose which goals to share. Of the 18 different measurements, they can choose which ones family members may view. “Developing a care plan based off of goals that are important to the patient helps to keep the patient motivated and gives them something to focus on,” said Sandra Morrison, physical therapist, St. Mary Medical Center. “The RehabTracker app allows the patient to visually see their progress toward the goals identified as important to them.” Therapists use the app as they work with and assist the patient to put instructions, goals or words of encouragement on an iPad that they carry with them and show the patient as they progress. Patients who want the app downloaded to their Android or Apple phone need to sign a consent. Therapists then help to set up the app which displays: • The patient’s current status or “baseline” status • Short and long-term goals (such as how far to walk with a walker, with assistance or alone; dressing with assistance; grooming; daily living skills • The daily grid which includes “Transfers” to and from the toilet, chair and bed • An activity page that includes points earned for completing goals in Grooming/Comprehension/Memory Goal prompts work much like wristband activity trackers with symbols for Fully Assisted; Partially Assisted or Fully Independent. Patients get a “star” for each task and move through a series of stepping stones (blue dots) as they progress. Patients collect a flag when they have achieved a goal. Besides meeting all goals, the Acute Rehabilitation Centers staff also prepares patients for going home by offering family training. Family members planning to take care of their

loved one once home again come in and review the goals: everything the patient will do at home and then does it… walking, stairs, getting in and out of a car, in and out of bed, bathroom, shower. “We usually offer this training near the end of the patient’s stay, but with enough time to adjust plans as necessary,” said Michael Flores, physical therapy assistant, Community Hospital. “With RehabTracker, the fact that the family can follow their loved one the whole time they are here instead of just one time is really important.” “If a family member is going to be responsible for the patient’s care after they are discharged from the hospital, they need to know in advance what they can do and what tasks they will need help with,” Khan explained. “Keeping treatment focused on goals helps.” “It is a great tool to keep families involved with their loved one’s progress when they cannot be here during therapy sessions,” said Morrison. “With RehabTracker, we are able to really explain what is going on with their family members, have a better conversation and better communicate with the family,” Flores said. Spontaneous Crowd Forms to Welcome Honor Flight Veterans
Veterans Don Krueger and Harold Myers retuned from the Honor Flight to find a crowd from the community waiting to welcome them home. Trelane Grayson of the Party Chasers brought red white and blue balloons. _______________________________________________
By Melanie Jongsma “Who are all these people?” asked Tom Parsons as he pulled into the Sunrise Health Foods parking lot with 20 other Legion Riders. The Legion Riders had arrived to escort two Lansing veterans home after a day with Honor Flight Chicago, a service the Riders have been providing for several years. Usually the bikers are alone in the parking lot, along with representatives from Lansing Police and Fire Departments. But on this night, more than 35 random Lansing residents had decided to join the welcome as well. The original ETA was 9:30pm, so the crowd had been waiting for an hour or more, receiving occasional updates texted by Trustee Maureen GradyPerovich, who serves as an Honor Flight Chicago liaison. temperature was comfortable, so most of the assembly didn’t mind spending the time in conversation, though some had to leave before the honorees finally arrived. It was close to 11:00pm when Korean War veteran Don Krueger and his family pulled into the parking lot. They had the same question: “Who are all these people?” After a day of being honored and cared for and saluted and escorted, Krueger wasn’t expecting one more reception. The whole day had been overwhelming and wonderful for him. He shook hands and chatted with the crowd while they waited for fellow veteran Harold Myers to arrive. The two live within blocks of each other in Lansing, but they didn’t really know one another before their day with Honor Flight.

Myers arrived several minutes later and received the same welcome. The two spent some time answering questions about their day’s experiences before participating in an impromptu balloon launch. Trelane Grayson, a new business owner in Lansing (The Party Chasers), had arrived on the scene with red, white, and blue balloons, which she distributed to the crowd, effectively turning the gathering into a party. After another round of thanks, Myers and Krueger accepted a ride from Tony Perovich, who had arrived at the scene in his 1975 Oldsmobile 88 Royale convertible. Perovich chauffeured the veterans home, escorted by bikers, fire engines, and police, with lights and sirens blaring.

or spouse. In the 1970s, the Census Bureau wanted a genderless term for people who were living together but not married. A staff member suggested the acronym POSSLQ (pronounced possel-cue), meaning “partner (or person) of opposite sex sharing living quarters,” but that was deemed too silly-sounding. The field of social phychology already used the term Significant Other as far back as 1940, to indicate someone with great influence, so the Census Bureau co-opted the term for its uses.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We made an offer on a home a month ago. It was lower than the asking price because the home needs a lot of work. The seller did not respond although he kept saying he would counter. Last week we found that another offer was being submitted by a third party. We went ahead and made a full price offer on the home. Now the seller still has not chosen an offer. The last we heard was that he was checking to see if he could get the title. He said all week he would make a decision that day; the days end and no decision. We have had $1,000 in earnest money tied up for a month. This is our dream home and we don’t even want to look at others. We now have someone interested in our home and don’t know what to do. Is there any action or anything we can do to force the seller to make a decision? We really want this house. Answer: Let’s look at where you stand: First, the seller has responded. The effective answer to your offer is “no.” Second, a seller cannot be forced to counter-offer. Third, no matter how attractive the home, you need a sale offer which absolutely requires the owner to deliver

good, marketable and insurable title. Otherwise, what have you bought? Please have a real estate broker or attorney help you. Question: Is a seller required to pay for a property inspection? I already did a separate pest inspection, but my Agent wants me to also pay for a home inspection. Isn’t this an expense for the buyer? Answer: A professional home inspection and a termite inspection are different. One is not a substitute for the other. You could have a contract where the seller, as a condition of the transaction, agrees to pay for a home inspection and a pest inspection by inspectors named by the purchaser. However, in the usual case such inspections are underwritten by the purchaser and for a good reason, to assure that the inspectors are absolutely independent of the owner. Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke—See It and Act Heat exhaustion happens when a person becomes overheated, and heat stroke can come soon after. Heat exhaustion is dangerous, and heat stroke is life threatening. Swift action is required at the first symptoms to prevent a rapid cascade effect that could lead to death. According to the EPA, people exposed to extreme heat can suffer from potentially fatal illness. Hot temperatures can also contribute to deaths from heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular disease. Heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States, at over 600 fatalities per year, even though most heat-related deaths are preventable through outreach and intervention. EPA’s Excessive
Heat Events Guidebook is available at www. epa.gov/heat-islands/excessive-heateventsguidebook). The symptoms of heat exhaustion are • Fever over 100.4 F (x C) • Headache • Fatigue, anxiety, & faintness • Weakness & muscle cramps • Nausea & vomiting • Pale, moist skin (sweating) • Diarrhea First aid for heat exhaustion is • Move to a cool place & rest • Remove excess clothing & fan skin • Place cool cloths on skin • Drink cool water or sports drinks if fully

People who have developed heat exhaustion may already have impaired judgment and be unable to make prudent decisions, so just advising them to get indoors may not work. When you see someone in distress, get them out of the heat immediately; enlist help from others nearby if you need to. You can avoid heat exhaustion for yourself by staying hydrated and getting out of the heat as soon as you feel uncomfortable. Franciscan Health offers a printable chart with symptoms and first aid. You can download a copy at http://images. franciscanhealthcare.org/PDFs/Enterprise/ infographic_heat_exhaustion_or_heat_ stroke_2018.pdf

ARLO KALLEMEYN Now that gas is approaching $3/gallon, here are a few tips to stretch the gas you buy go further. 1. Go easy on the brakes and gas pedal. Avoid “jackrabbit” starts by accelerating gradually whenever possible. Also, anticipate stops to avoid sudden braking. 2. Avoid long idles. Turn off the engine if you anticipate a lengthy wait. Instead of idling at a drive-up window, park the car and go in. Idling burns more gas than restarting the engine and the extra walking will burn calories. 3. Avoid carrying unneeded items in the trunk. Extra weight decreases gas mileage. Also, reduce drag by placing items inside the car or trunk rather than on roof racks. 4. Avoid high speeds. You can improve your gas mileage about 15 percent by driving at 55 mph rather than 65 mph. 5. Use your air conditioning only when necessary. Roll down the windows or open the air vents to keep your car comfortable on not-so-hot days. 6. Keep tires properly inflated and aligned. Periodic wheel alignments and keeping tires inflated to the maximum recommended pressure can improve your gas mileage. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of filling up less often. What Should You Do With an Inherited IRA? BOB KRYGSHELD Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are quite popular. At the end of 2017, investors owned nearly $9 trillion in IRA assets. Given these numbers, it probably wouldn’t be surprising if you inherited an IRA someday. But what should you do with it? First of all, you’ll need to be aware of some basic rules. If your parent, or anyone other than your spouse, leaves you a traditional IRA – one in which contributions are typically tax-deductible and earnings can grow tax-deferred – you can transfer the money into an “inherited IRA,” from which you’ll need to take at least a minimum distribution each year, based on your life expectancy. These funds are taxable at your regular income tax rate. If you’ve inherited a Roth IRA, you also must take these minimum payouts, but the amounts won’t count as taxable income, because your parents, or whoever left you the IRA, already paid taxes on the contributions that went into it. (To make sure you fully understand all the guidelines on distributions and taxation of inherited IRAs, consult with your tax advisor.) To understand how your inherited IRA will fit in to your overall financial strategy, you’ll need to address these questions: • How much should I take out each year? You must take a distribution of at least a minimum amount from your inherited IRA each year – if you don’t, you may be subject to a 50% penalty on the amount you should have taken. But you can take out more than the

minimum. In deciding how much to take, you’ll need to evaluate a few factors. First, of course, is whether you need the extra money to help support your regular cash flow. Another consideration is taxes, the more you take out from a traditional IRA each year, the bigger your tax bill may be. • Should I keep the same investments? Inheriting an IRA doesn’t mean you’re stuck with the original account owner’s investment choices. You can change the investments to align with your goals and risk tolerance. • How does the inherited IRA fit in with my overall financial strategy? You’ll need to consider how your newly inherited IRA fits in to the “big picture” of your financial strategy. If you keep the inherited IRA largely intact, how will it affect your current investment mix? Could the added income from required distributions change your retirement calculations or even enable you to retire earlier? You may want to consult with a financial professional about these and other questions related to your inherited IRA. The person who left you an IRA worked hard for that money and thought enough of you to pass it on. Consequently, you’ll want to respect this inheritance – and get the most out of it for as long as you can. New Star Receives Funds from The Arc and Walmart Foundation to Build Its Program for Workers with Disabilities New Star has received $12,000 from The Arc of the United States and the Walmart Foundation to continue bridging the gap between the career world and workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), through The Arc@ Work. Research indicates that 85% of people with I/DD are currently unemployed. However, with the right supports, many individuals with I/DD can successfully build a career alongside their peers without disabilities. With the Walmart Foundation’s generous support in 2016 and 2017, The Arc and its chapters significantly increased the number of individuals with I/DD placed in community-based employment. Over this two-year span, the Walmart Foundation has supported The Arc@Work and chapters of The Arc located across the country in training more than 2,000 individuals and placing more than 800 individuals into competitive and community-based jobs. Additionally, participating chapters
of The Arc have forged relationships with nearly 500 local and regional employers, connecting them with job candidates and providing staff training on creating inclusive work environments. “We are grateful for this funding from Walmart and The Arc. New Star is excited to join the ranks and further work toward its commitment to securing meaningful, communitybased employment for individuals with I/DD in Chicago’s south suburbs and Northwest Indiana. We look forward to working with The Arc@Work and the Walmart Foundation on this project,” said Dan Strick, President/CEO of New Star. New Star will use this grant to develop an ongoing employer outreach program to increase employer engagement. Despite progress in disability rights over the past 25 years, the majority of people with I/DD are living at or below the poverty levels due to being unemployed or under-employed. Many of those living with I/DD have the desire and the

ability to work and live within the community, but lack the pathways for doing so. Many businesses struggle with ongoing position vacancies but have trouble identifying individuals with I/DD as an untapped resource. With the proper supports and opportunities, these individuals can be as productive and reliable as any other employee. They tend to have better attendance records, stay with employers longer, have fewer accidents at work and companies that hire individuals with I/DD may be eligible for tax benefits. The Arc advocates for and serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including Down syndrome, autism, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, cerebral palsy and other diagnoses. The Arc has a network of nearly 650 chapters across the country promoting and protecting the human rights of people with I/DD and actively supporting their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes and without regard to diagnosis.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
License to Buy MIKE BUDER The other day I received a call from a potential buyer and spent a considerable amount of time answering his questions about short sales, foreclosures and the process of buying a home in the South Suburbs. As we wrapped up our conversation I re-iterated that his next step, since he would be financing his home purchase, would be to get pre-approved by a qualified lender. That’s when the conversation changed direction. Mr. Buyer didn’t feel that this pre-approval was necessary. I mean the last time he checked his credit score was in the mid 600’s. The fact of the matter is Mr. Buyer, what you think your credit score WAS means nothing to me. There are a lot of factors that go into the preapproval process and it’s important that you, as the buyer, know exactly where you stand with the terms of the mortgage. How much will you be putting down? What type of financing will you be getting…FHA, VA or conventional? And, what is the loan amount you will be approved to receive…today that is. It doesn’t do any good to show you homes you may not be approved to buy. In order for a seller to take you seriously, a loan status
report (LSR) from a lender must accompany any offer you make. This preapproval form will ensure that you, your lender and I are all on the same page. Think of your LSR as your “License to Buy”. This is my business practice, Mr. Buyer. I do not show homes to buyers who are not willing to go through the painless process of speaking with a lender to be pre-approved. This can often be done over the phone and this is where all serious buyers who are financing their purchase in today’s market must start. Mr. Buyer was not happy with my business policy. He told me there are a lot of agents out there who will show him homes without being pre-approved first. Yep Mr. Buyer, there are. And “you are free to work with any one of them”. RICHARD ZEKVELD Amen! It’s an exclamation of agreement. It’s a holy-sounding ‘Yes!’ It’s the magic word many children (and perhaps others?) have often longed to hear throughout church history, signaling the end of the preacher’s proclamation and their imminent dismissal to leap like calves released from the stall. It’s also a Hebrew word – one of the few that most people know. Amen is related to the Hebrew verb aman, meaning to be certain, reliable. The first time I rode with my daughter on the Manticore, a giant swing at Mt. Olympus in Wisconsin Dells that suspends its riders 100 feet plus above the park, I noticed that only one bolt secured our seat to the frame. I shouldn’t have looked. Thankfully, that bolt was aman! The same can be said for the massive pillars and solid foundations that hold up our city’s tallest buildings, day in and day out. Sometimes the word aman and its relatives describe someone who is

certain and reliable in relationships. Used relationally, aman means to be faithful. God himself is the ultimate Someone who is certain, reliable and faithful in his relationships with his children. Our God is absolutely aman. All his promises are aman – his promise of forgiveness, his presence, his life-changing power, provision, strength for today, bright hope for tomorrow, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Everything God has promised comes wrapped in a Personal Package named Jesus. “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God’ (2 Corinthians 1:20). Receive Jesus, and you receive all God has promised. Because Jesus is aman, we can say ‘Amen’. Remember that next time you hear this little Hebrew word.

Saved Miller Resident $563 WOODROW WILCOX On June 11, 2018, I met with a client from the Miller Beach area of Gary, Indiana. He had a medical bill problem. I reviewed the medical bills that he brought and phoned the insurance company with which he had a Medicare supplement insurance policy that he bought through our agency. The insurance company reported that it never got the claims. Then, we made phone calls to two departments of Medicare to make sure that there was nothing wrong with his record at Medicare. Nothing was wrong with his file. Medicare reported that it never got claims from the medical firm that was billing our client. Next, we phoned the medical firm that was billing our client $563. I explained that Medicare reported that it never got claims from that firm relating to the services on the medical bills that it sent to our client. The medical firm claimed that it did file the claims with Medicare. So, I got the supervisor’s name and wrote a polite but to the point letter which explained what the representative at Medicare reported. The firm may have tried to file claims with Medicare, but made some mistake which prevented the claims from reaching Medicare for processing. No matter what caused the problem, I did not want our client harmed financially just because someone in the Medicare system made a mistake. If the medical firm will do what I requested, then I am confident that the bill will be resolved and our client will owe nothing. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This agency is proud of its reputation for “going the extra mile” for our clients to resolve such medical bill problems. Does your insurance agent or agency give this same high level of customer service? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

SMOKIN’ MARK AND HIS FAMOUS BAR B QUE: If you have noticed something new around the w ildly popular Rob’s Meat Chop and Deli in Dyer just off U.S. 30, on North Winds Drive, it is Rob’s head butcher Mark Drisner of Griffith. Mark has been outfitted with state-of-the-art smoker, grill and tent, the better to serve up fresh ribs, steaks, and chops to enjoy on the spot; he’ll also cook-to-order what we purchase at Rob’s. When asked how he came to do this specialty barbecuing, he answered, “Rob found out I could also cook.” So a new service was born at Rob’s! Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ***

More than 900 Citizens Sign Coolidge Chimney Swift Petition “Delay the Coolidge chimney demolition until October for the Chimney Swifts, is the title emblazoned at the top of the online petition. It was posted three days ago by Lansing resident and recent activist Julie Blackwood. Blackwood lives near Coolidge Elementary School and has spent most nights this summer walking to Henry and Adams to join other “Swifties in watching the growing colony return to their roost each evening at dusk. Throughout Lansing, people are learning about the chimney swifts for the first time— though the migratory birds have been arriving in Lansing each summer for 20, 30, 40 years or more. “They do this every night? is a common question from first-time Swifties. And whoever is standing nearby will begin sharing whatever knowledge they’ve recently gained. Because of that initial lack of awareness, the Coolidge chimney swift petition goes into some detail explaining the situation. The case might be summarized as follows:
• A new school building was needed. • The old school building was scheduled for demolition. • The old building houses more than 300 chimney swifts. • The swifts are federally protected. • The swifts provide ecological and community benefits. • The situation presents unique opportunities that should be explored. The petition proposes: “We would like for decision-makers at Lansing School District 158 to see the Coolidge chimney swifts as a unique opportunity to be leveraged rather than a problem to be eliminated. With some reimagining of the plans and some readjusting of the construction schedule, the old chimney (and possibly the surrounding structure) could become a permanent nesting site for the birds and an education resource for the surrounding community. Repurposing some of the existing structure would result in fewer parking spots in the proposed parking lot, but
is such a unique opportunity, it should be explored. School Board meeting The next meeting of the District 158 School Board is scheduled for Wednesday, July 18, at 7:00pm. The agenda for that meeting has not yet been posted, but the Coolidge chimney swifts are anticipated to be an item of business. Demolition of the old building cannot proceed without further direction from the USDA. Blackwood is hoping to reach at least 1,000 signatures on the swift petition before the date of that meeting. School Board meetings are open to the public. They take place in the Board Room at the District Office, which is located at 18300 Greenbay Avenue in Lansing. imagine having a small learning center with information about swifts, ecology, migration, Peru, and even some history of the old school and the old chimney. â€œâ€ŚCommunity interest in the birds is already growing steadily, and with a little marketing, and some tie-ins to Fox Pointe, the Coolidge chimney swifts could attract birders, environmentalists, and curious families from throughout the area.â€? The online petition also gives signers an opportunity to include “Reasons for signing.â€? At the time of this writing, about three dozen petitioners had chosen to post a reason. For some, the petition is about the birds; others are nostalgic about the old Coolidge building; a few see potential benefits the swifts might bring to the broader Lansing community: “It’s nice to have them here in Lansing,â€? wrote Patti Cunniff. “Why not leave it and attract visitors to view the amazing chimney swifts?â€? Liz Copeland typed. And Maryoline Sferruzza suggested, “This
