a disease in which the muscles in the heart struggled to pump blood to rest of her body. Bella’s heart, kidney and liver began to fail and while she was placed on a machine to keep her alive, there was a lack of blood flow to her limbs. Later her right leg had to be amputated and her motor skills relearned. She spent the next six months in the hospital and that is when she met Teresa Flamini, creator of the Flamini Foundation, who was delivering Comfort Bags in the pediatric ward. Her favorite items from the bags were legos, candy, crafts and sticker books, which significantly aided in the therapy to learn to use her hands again. “Bella thought that they were the best thing in the world,” said Rodrigues. “But being able to pass out the bags she was receiving from the foundation to other children was more important to her.” The Flamini Foundation was founded in 2009 to bring smiles to sick children and their family. IN SOS: Ignore “State Voter Report” Letters Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson has received numerous complaints from Hoosier voters who received a letter claiming to be a ‘state voter report.’ These letters purport to be voting record audits. The letter lists an individual’s name, address and voter participation for 2014 and 2016. It also lists neighbors and friends of the individual and their voter participation history. “The State of Indiana does not treat lightly its role to strictly

I would advise anyone who receives the letter to disregard it.” Indiana law restricts the availability of voter participation records. Bella Rodrigues, child ambassador of the Flamini Foundation, helps deliver comfort bags to hospitalized children, with the hope of having the same impact as they did with her while she was in the hospital. “She gets so excited every time because she loves helping and making other kids smile,” said Gia Rodrigues, Bella’s mother. Bella is one of three ambassadors for the foundation’s “Kids helping Kids” project. The ambassadors write letters to students at their perspective schools asking for donations for the Comfort Bags. The letters allow for these ambassadors to tell their own story and why they want to help other children. “While I was in the hospital people sent me many items that helped me stay positive and helped me with my fear of being in the hospital and everything I was going through,” said Bella in one of her letters. At seven years old, Bella was admitted to Lurie Children’s Hospital after getting very sick. She had contracted the Swine Flu, and upon further diagnosis the doctors found that she had

Women’s History Month may have come and gone, the event chairpersons (Alexandra Glumac and Rebecca GarciaWestburg) of South Suburban College’s 10th Anniversary Women’s Conference now know what others have suspected all along—this year’s Women’s Conference was a huge success! From the thought-provoking lineup of guest speakers to the exciting display of vendors, women from across the Chicagoland region showed their support for this year’s conference by participating in a day of events dedicated to them. With the theme, “Be Your Own Superhero,” women certainly embraced this motto and came out to hear how they too can be their very best and begin their “Superhero” journey of self-empowerment and improvement. The event began with a continental breakfast followed by the dynamic keynote speaker, Felicia Houston. Ingalls and current President of the Professional Women’s Network, began her presentation with audience engagement and gave the participants something to hang onto with her version of what each letter of the word, “SUPERHERO” stands for such as S=Strong, Supportive to O=Optimistic, Open-Minded! The participants then chose workshops sessions to attend and from the positive feedback received, the sessions were both informative and educational. An afternoon break with lunch was followed with a fashion show, more sessions and line dancing. The conference also recognized individual women through the STAR Awards, given to acknowledge remarkable women for their professional and/or volunteer accomplishments and leadership. This year three women received awards: The special South Suburban College Lifetime Alumna Award recognized Coreen (Cory) Clark, a graduate of the SSC Registered

For the first time ever, The Chicago Women’s Conference also offered a competitive selection scholarship for women and high school girls who attended this year’s conference. Selection of the winner is in progress. With the successful event now completed and the Women’s Conference Committee having seen the fruits of their labor, a special thanks is given to the following various sub-committees and/ or individuals for their dedication and commitment to the 10th Anniversary Women’s Conference: Rhonda Browne, Patrice Burton, Felicia Houston, Erica Humphrey, Blevian Moore, Jacki Rivera, Alysia Robinette, Hella Bowker and LaTasha Binder. Proud band members pose with some of the new trophies won at the The band received the Espirit De Corps, given to the school that exhibits the highest standard of musicianship for the festival. 2018 Music in the Park Festival in April.
_______________________________ By Patricia Muhammad Thornwood Marching Band continues to hit high notes of excellence as it recently collected seven trophies during the 2018 Music in the Park Festival held April 28, at Zion Benton High School in Zion, Illinois. Participating high school bands included Allen High School in Virginia, Medina High School in New York, Revis High School in Burbank, Illinois, among others. “We were very fortunate to receive high marks for each of the groups that competed,” said Dwayne Sanders, Director of Band at Thornwood High School. “The Marching Band received the Overall Best of the Festival rating, and the entire band program received the Espirit De Corps, which is an award given to the school that exhibits the highest standard of musicianship for the festival. Our Concert Band, Professional Ensemble, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo and Marching Band competed in the festival.” Thornwood Marching Band also competed in the 2017 Rich Central Band Competition held in Rich Central High School during the month of October. The band also won First Place in its Class, First Place Overall and it was also awarded Grand Champion of that marching band competition. Sanders said, “This is our second win in a row at competition.” Eugennie Griffin, a Thornwood senior and a tuba player has performed in the band for three years. Griffin is graduating and will be attending the University of Kentucky in the fall, however, he did not expect such a huge win during the Music in the Park competition. “I didn’t know that we were going to win. It was a surprise. I think we did really, really good. We deserved it,” he said. The school year ends on May 25th, but rehearsal and brand practice will continue for the summer months. Sanders listed the camps that will take place: “We will have the Fundamental Camp just for Thornwood Marching Band Students and that

will start June 4th. We will also have our District Band Camp hosted by the district. That camp will run from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. here at Thornwood. We will go for three weeks and that encompasses the Brass Camp, the Percussion Camp, the Wood Wind Camp and also the Auxiliary Camp that is divided between the Majorettes and the Flag Squad.” When asked about the importance of music in the field of education, Sanders replied: “Music education ties all subjects together—English, Math, Science, Physical Education, Social Studies—and we are very privileged to be able to offer that to our students at Thornwood high School. Go T-birds!” Sanders feels students of the band program at Thornwood High School are better prepared to be life-long learners and contributors to society. To graduating seniors he says, “I am proud of your progress and I look forward to your continued progress on our road to success.” Thornwood High School band students participated in the 2018 Historical Black College and University Consortium in Atlanta, GA this year, where seven band students received scholarships, ranging from $6,000 to $8,000 per year. All seven students received four-year offers. Other students received offers that are contingent pending students final choices. Students will make known their final choices for school. “We are extremely proud of the opportunity that we were afforded at the HBCU Consortium,” said Sanders, “and we look forward to the opportunity again next year, and being able to offer it to more students.” For the Month of May, the band’s current calendar includes the following activities: On May 3rd – Spring Band Concert On May 5th –McKinley Junior High School Spring Concert May 14th – Awards Banquets for Band students May 20th –Thornwood High School Graduation May 28th- South Holland Memorial Day Parade

Turn of Phrase Blockbuster: In the
1940s, the military called a 2-ton bomb that could obliterate an entire city block a “blockbuster.” It almost immediately became a popular marketing term for something big and exciting. Initially used to designate a movie what was costly to produce, it now indicates a movie expected to bring in high ticket sales.

South Suburban College Adult Volunteer Literacy Program Seeking Volunteer Tutors and Offering Free Services South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-onone tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program. New tutor training sessions will take place at the Main Campus in South Holland on May 22nd & 24th from 4pm until 6pm and May 29th & 31st from 4pm until 6pm. Come join our Literacy Program and help us start this summer off right! The tutor training is a 12-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. We offer online training as well. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring
sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring is scheduled by the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites. Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult
Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). Tutors will receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. If you would like to register for the upcoming volunteer tutor training class please register, or if you know someone who could benefit from tutoring services, please contact Raylynn Stokes, Literacy Coach of the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email rstokes@ssc. edu. South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, Illinois.
IL Employer-Provided Retirement Plan to Become Mandatory This month, a new retirement plan called Illinois Secure Choice is being introduced in Illinois for those employers that don’t already offer a a 401(k) or other qualified plan. For the first several months, this program will be voluntary, but beginning in November 2018, those employers will be legally required to participate in this plan. However, many companies are still uneducated or undereducated about this program. “It is imperative that employers in Illinois become better acquainted with these changing retirement requirements,” says Rob Wilson, President of Chicago-based employment solutions firm Employco USA. “This is especially true right now, as big changes are coming with Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program, which is a retirement savings plan that enables Illinois-based workers to save their own money

through a regular payroll deduction.” Wilson outlines what Illinois employers need to know: Voluntary Pilot Phase. “After several delays, the Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program is ready to launch its pilot phase in May 2018. Starting in May, employers that elect to voluntarily participate can begin to process employee payroll deductions and remit the funds to the retirement plan provider,” says Wilson. Employer Requirement Phase. “Starting in November 2018, employers will be notified of their legal requirement to participate in the program. Employers in Illinois that have 25 or more employees, have been in operation for at least two years, and that don’t already offer a qualified savings plan will be required to automatically enroll their employees into
Secure Choice,” says Wilson. “Employees can opt-out at any time. Employers will be responsible for dispersing information packets (provided by Secure Choice) to each of their employees. Employers will also facilitate enrollment of employees into Secure Choice, set up the payroll deduction process, and remit employee contributions to the plan provider. Employers who do not comply with the Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program Act may be subject to fines and penalties.” Wilson notes that an employer can choose to offer another qualified employer-sponsored plan prior to the deadline. Qualified savings plans, such as 401(k)s, certain IRAs, and health savings accounts defer taxes until the money is used by the employee.

Real Estate Specialists
Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m getting ready to enter the market to buy a home. I’ve heard about so many different terms lately my head is spinning! What do “closing costs” mean and who pays them? Answer: Imagine that you’re buying a $3 million yacht. You go to the yacht store, find one you like and then get in line at the check-out counter to pay your bill (remember, this is a fantasy, we’re imagining here). The clerk rings up your tab and then adds $200,000 for the sales tax, shipping and handling. The extra costs at the check-out counter above the purchase price are, essentially, closing costs. The situation at the yacht store is similar in real estate. In addition to the actual cost of the property, say $300,000, there are also taxes, lending costs, insurance, appraisals, legal fees, etc. that are collected at closing. Who pays closing costs is often a matter
of local tradition or, what the form says. However, forms can be amended and local traditions are not binding. The real way it works is this: Unless otherwise required by law, all closing costs are negotiable. In a strong sellers’ market you can bet that the buyer will pay many if not all closing costs. In a strong buyers’ market, the owner will likely offer a “seller’s contribution” to offset the purchaser’s closing expenses. The important point is that closing costs are typically negotiable. For specifics, speak with your real estate broker. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of Selling your Home? National Drinking Water Week – Protect the Source
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is celebrating Drinking Water Week, May 6-12, a week that recognizes the vital role water plays in citizens’ daily lives. IDEM is participating in the celebration by reminding Hoosiers about the importance of protecting the state’s drinking water sources so future generations will have access to a safe and sustainable drinking water supply. Hoosiers can participate in protecting Indiana’s drinking water sources by: Following the label when using and storing cleaners, fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides, as well as when disposing of unwanted cleaners, paints, used motor oil, old gasoline, fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides. Never pour household chemicals or harsh cleaners down the drain or a sewer or on the ground. These substances can be properly disposed of at “tox-away days,” which are hosted by local solid waste management districts. Maintaining septic systems and inspecting them regularly. Reporting accidental spills to IDEM’s 24-hour spill line:
(888) 233-7745. First passed in 1974, the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) ensures that the drinking water supplied by a public water supply is safe and meets quality standards. Since more than 5.4 million Hoosiers are serviced by a public water system, IDEM works closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure those standards are met at the more than 4,000 public water supply locations across the state. IDEM staff assists these water systems through site inspections, technical assistance and financial programs. Within the SDWA, public water systems are required to send out a Consumer Confidence Report every year to show customers that their water meets health standards known as Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), which include microorganisms, disinfectants, disinfection by-products, inorganic chemicals, organic chemicals and radionuclides. The report contains information on the specific sources of drinking water, the levels of any detected contaminants and educational information regarding the water.

In addition to ensuring that Hoosiers have clean, safe drinking water, IDEM oversees the protection of Indiana’s streams, rivers, lakes and aquifers that serve as a source of drinking water. To protect these sources from potential contamination, Indiana developed and implemented a Source Water Protection Program, which identifies the sources of public drinking water, assesses the susceptibility of watersupply systems to contamination and informs the public of the results. For more information about Drinking Water Week, visit the American Water Works Association’s website at www.awwa.org. IDEM (www.idem.IN.gov) implements federal and state regulations regarding the environment. Through compliance assistance, incentive programs and educational outreach, the agency encourages and aids businesses, government and citizens to protect human health and the environment while supporting activities vital to a prosperous economy.

Motorists Urged to Share the Road Safely with Farm Equipment With temperatures finally on the rise, more farmers will be out in their fields, which means slow-moving farm equipment will soon be on Indiana roadways. With this in mind, several state agencies – including the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) – are partnering to encourage Hoosiers to be alert, slow down and share the road with farm equipment. “As planting season begins, INDOT urges motorists to slow down, avoid distractions and be alert for slow moving farm equipment on highways that travel through Indiana’s farming communities,” said INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness. “Remember to be patient and share the road so that Hoosier farmers, INDOT crews, construction and utility workers, emergency responders and you stay safe.” By law, farm equipment must have the nationally designated slow-moving vehicle sign (a red, triangle-shaped reflector) to warn drivers that their equipment is on the road. These vehicles often travel at speeds no higher than 25 mph.
“Due to the size of our equipment, people will often see us before we see them,” said Zach Cain, a Montgomery County farmer. “It’s important to be patient. Farmers don’t want to hold up traffic, but it can take us some time to find a safe spot to pull over.” Agencies participating in this effort to encourage motorists to be cautious this planting season include INDOT, the Governor’s office, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, Indiana State Police, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Collectively, they offer the following tips: Most farmers will pull over when they are able to let motorists pass, but it may take time for them to get to a safe place to do so. Be patient. Farm equipment is wide, sometimes taking up most of the roadway. Be careful when passing. Do not pass if you are in a designated “No Passing Zone” or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing,

bridge, elevation structure or tunnel. Do not try to pass a slow-moving vehicle on the left without ensuring that the vehicle is not planning a left turn. It may appear that the driver is pulling over for you to pass when it is actually preparing to turn. You will drive right into its path, endangering yourself and the farmer. Avoid tailgating, as some farm equipment might have to make sudden stops along the road. Allow plenty of time to get to your destination, be aware of alternate routes and avoid distractions. Pay special attention to stationary farm equipment on the side of the road as there might be farmers working nearby. Join Us For The Garden Club of South Holland is happy to announce it’s annual Flower Frenzy Plant Sale. This year’s plant sale will take place on May 12th, the Saturday before Mother’s Day. This is the perfect time to pick up a lovely hanging basket of blooming Petunias (Wave and otherwise) of various colors for Mom. The baskets will be at a great low price that is very competitive with local nurseries and big box stores. This year, as in the past, we will also be featuring hard to find annuals. These include Tropical Milkweed, Mexican Sunflower and 4 O’clocks of various colors. The Tropical Milkweed was a big success last year, as we very nearly sold out of them. Make sure you get there early if you plan on getting one of these beauties for your yard. Should you arrive after the plants have been sold out, Tropical Milkweed seeds and native Milkweed seeds will be available for purchase. New this year, we will have Datura , commonly known as Devil’s Trumpet. These plants produce abundant white tubular blooms, similar to lily, that flowers throughout the summer. The trumpet flowers are fragrant and attract hummingbirds. It is an annual though it could reseed itself and come back next year. Perennial plants will also be available. Look for Alium, Stella D’oro, Centurea Montana and even some Rose of Sharon saplings will be available. Prices for the perennials are very good compared to prices paid elsewhere. These plants are donated by Club Members from their own yards, so the varieties and quantities are limited. These past few weeks, the club has added an additional fundraiser by selling Rain Barrels. These barrels are great for storing and using water on garden beds and hanging baskets when the weather runs dry. Not only does it conserve water, but it will lower your water bill as well if utilized frequently. Barrels were to be ordered and pre-paid online and the deadline to order was May 5th, though there will be a few extra barrels for purchase on-site for any interested parties. Pick up of the Rain Barrels is the same day as the Flower Frenzy Sale. The plant sale is at the American Legion Hall, 443 E. 157th Street in South Holland, just east of South Park Avenue. Hours for the Plant Sale and Rain Barrel pick up is 10am to 4pm, rain or shine.
St. Catherine Scores ‘A’ in Patient Safety The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit healthcare ratings organization, Tuesday, April 24, released new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades to general acute-care hospitals in the nation. St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago was one of 750 hospitals to be awarded the organization’s highest grade, an ‘A,’ in patient safety for the spring of 2018. The Hospital Safety grades, ranging from A to F, rate a hospital’s performance twice-a-year in preventing medical errors, injuries, infections and other harms among patients in their care. “The ‘A’ grade is recognized in the healthcare industry as the gold standard for patient safety,” said Leo Correa, CEO. “Because safe, high-quality patient care is a priority of St. Catherine Hospital, the Leapfrog Group rating reflects our longstanding commitment to keep our patients in the forefront and best practices in place for exceptional treatment outcomes.” Impressively, St. Catherine Hospital has achieved the ‘A’ grade in Fall 2017 and in 10 consecutive Leapfrog coring updates since the patient safety measures began. Receiving an ‘A’ safety grade means a hospital is among the best in the country for preventing problems and putting their patients first, 24 hours a day, said Leah Binder, president and CEO of the Washington, DC-based Leapfrog Group. Developed under the guidance of a Blue Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The measure is peer reviewed, transparent and free to the public. The Leapfrog Group says it has seen a 21 percent decline in hospital-acquired conditions, improved functionality of computerized physician order entry systems at hospitals and averted millions of patient harms since the bi-annual rating program began. To see St. Catherine Hospital’s full grade details, and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit www. hospitalsafetygrade.org. To learn more about St. Catherine Hospital, a 211-bed acute care hospital that is part of Community Healthcare System, the largest integrated healthcare system in Northwest Indiana, visit comhs.org.

State Park “Origins” Documentary Available Online Learn about the beginning of Indiana’s system of state parks and the role an Indianapolis businessman played in their development in a new documentary available online. “Origins,” a 42-minute film, portrays the story of Richard Lieber, a German immigrant and early conservationist who spearheaded efforts to develop Indiana state parks more than 100 years ago. The film also tells how Lieber overcame disappointment after a failed first attempt to purchase the land that became Turkey Run State Park. “It reminds us that sometimes our biggest successes come when we don’t give up after failure,” said Ginger Murphy, deputy director of Indiana State Parks. Storyteller Bob Sander developed the film and narrates it. Sander wrote “Origins” in 2016 with funding from an Arts in the Parks grant
through the Indiana Arts Commission as part of the Indiana State Parks 2016 Centennial Celebration. Originally, Sander presented “Origins” live and in-person to state parks visitors. In 2017, Sander received a grant to convert “Origins” to a digital presentation that could be shared through electronic media and used in state park interpretive centers. A link to the “Origins” video is at StateParks. IN.gov/2410.htm. Indiana’s first state park, McCormick’s Creek, opened on July 4, 1916, followed by Turkey Run later that year. The system has since grown to 32 properties statewide. See a calendar of arts events in Indiana state parks at StateParks.IN.gov/8423.htm. BOB KRYGSHELD As an investor, you have long-term objectives, such as achieving a comfortable retirement. But you will also have short-term goals – you may want to remodel your kitchen, buy a new car or even take a cruise. How should you invest for these goals? To answer that question, let’s first look at how you might invest to achieve your longer-term goals. For these goals, the key investment ingredient is growth—quite simply, you want your money to grow as much as possible over time. Consequently, you will likely want a good percentage of growthoriented vehicles, such as stocks and other stockbased investments, to fund your 401(k), IRA or other accounts. However, the flip side of growth is risk. Stocks and stock-based investments will always fluctuate in value—which means you could lose some, or even all, of your principal. Hopefully, though, by putting time on your side—that is, by holding your growth-oriented investments for decades —you can overcome the inevitable short-term price drops. In short, when investing for long-term goals, you’re seeking significant growth and, in doing so, you’ll have to accept some degree of investment risk. But when you’re after shortterm goals, the formula is somewhat different: You don’t need maximum growth potential as much as you need to be reasonably confident that a certain amount of money will be there for you at a certain time. You may want to work with a financial professional to select the appropriate investments for your short-term goals. But, in general, you’ll need these investments to provide you with the following attributes: • Protection of principal Laser printer for computer, all in one with toner $30; Epson printer $15; drapes long, $5 per panel. 708-4606035 Oil stain/ceiling pant $2 per d r u m ; ve n t h o o d w i d e mouth for dryer $2; set of 4 snack tables with stand, wood $25. 708-460-6035
As mentioned above, when you own stocks, you have no assurance that your principal will be preserved; there’s no agency, no government office, guaranteeing that you won’t lose money. And even some of the investments best suited for short-term goals won’t come with full guarantees, either, but, by and large, they do offer you a reasonable amount of confidence that your principal will remain intact. • Liquidity Some short-term investments have specific terms—i.e., two years, three years, five years, etc.—meaning you do have an incentive to hold these investments until they mature. Otherwise, if you cash out early, you might pay some price, such as loss of value or loss of the income produced by these investments. Nonetheless, these types of investments are usually not difficult to sell, either before they mature or at maturity, and this liquidity will be helpful to you when you need the money to meet your short-term goal. • Stability of issuer Although most investments suitable for short-term goals do provide a high degree of preservation of principal, some of the issuers of these investments are stronger and more stable than others – and these strong and stable issuers are the ones you should stick with. Ultimately, most of your investment efforts will probably go toward your long-term goals. But your short-term goals are still important – and the right investment strategy can help you work toward them. Why Do Buyers LowBall?” MIKE BUDER I’m often asked by sellers “what are these people thinking?” when a low offer comes in. The easy answer is “they aren’t thinking”, but the real truth is far more complex. At the heart of it all is always self-interest, which is the very same reason why sellers want to get the most money for their homes. The following are some motivations for buyers to low ball. 1. SPECULATIONHey, you never know, the seller might just go for it. Sadly there are some mud throwers in this group who will make 10 low offers hoping one sticks. Some are wanna-be investors, others just want to live cheaply (do you blame them?). 2. BAD ADVICE- The buyer’s agent made too many promises about what they could do for them, or their uncle Don thinks he’s a wheeler dealer at Sunday dinner. 3. MEDIA HYSTERIABanking to much on TV and newspapers reporting on national statistics that may not be consistent to local markets. 4. FEAR- Some buyers know too many people who have been hurt due to a job loss, declining values or both. They are far more cautious than they were ten years ago. 5. CULTURE- Some buyers come from other countries and make low offers because that is just how they do business
Tv stand, black $25; surge protector $5; 2 sub woofers $5 ea; shower bench with back support $10. 708-4606035
where they come from and they may have no idea that a low number would be insulting. 6. MIXED SIGNALSThe buyer might feel that a vacant home might have desperate owners or a house with no signs of a man is a divorce. If a buyer “smells blood” they will press their perceived advantage, accurate or not. 7. GENERIC RESEARCH: GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) comes to mind, but no matter the source, be it Zillow or some other website that can appraise a home without even entering it. Some people are just over influenced by collected data. In all these cases a seller’s response should be calm, calculated and unemotional. Offers are just a starting point. The real goal is a good ending point (accepted contracts) and those start with an offer, no matter how high or low. It might be tempting to send a low offer packing, but the best thing to do is counter offer and negotiate. There were no Ascension Day displays in the stores, no Ascension Day billboards, and no Ascension Day candy. You didn’t get any Ascension Day cards or hear any Ascension Day music on the radio. Nobody called you to wish you a Happy Ascension Day or invite you over for Ascension Day dinner. Forty days earlier, Jesus had risen from the dead. His followers were still beside themselves with joy, ecstatic every time he appeared to them. One day, he met them on the Mt. of Olives, overlooking Jerusalem. He spoke a blessing over them. Then, suddenly, an invisible force lifted him off the ground and up, up and away until he disappeared into the clouds. Then he was gone. But the Bible tells us, “they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great

joy” (Luke 24:52). Great joy? Your favorite person just left for good and your response is great joy? But that’s the key: Jesus just left for good. For their good. For our good. Ascension Day is Inauguration Day. King Jesus rode into the capital of the cosmos to jubilant crowds following his epic victory over the forces of evil. He then took his place in heaven’s oval office. There, as defense attorney, he pleads our case before God. From there he directs his mission to restore broken people and their broken world. From there he protects his own. From there he sends his Holy Spirit to empower God’s children for suffering and service until he returns to finish off the forces of evil and to reign in a restored world with his restored people forever. Happy Ascension Day! Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church.

Postal Carriers Help Stamp Out Hunger with Food Drive With the help of sponsors, volunteer organizations and U.S. Postal Service employees in 10,000 communities nationwide, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 12. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Last year’s drive resulted in carriers collecting 75.3 million pounds of food from local communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Since the drive began in 1993, total donations have surpassed 1.6 billion pounds of food. The food drive has become the nation’s largest one-day campaign to collect food for distribution to needy families. Making a donation is easy. Customers should leave their non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday, May 12, before their letter carrier arrives. In the days leading up to the food drive, letter carriers will be delivering special bags along with your mail that may be used to make donations. Food collected during Saturday’s drive will be delivered to local community churches, food banks and food pantries for distribution. While all non-perishable donations are welcome, foods that are high in protein such as canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut

On April 16, 2018, I made a three-way call to Medicare with a client from Valparaiso, Indiana. In that call, we spoke to Medicare representative Christopher Cole who works at a Medicare call center in Kentucky. Christopher Cole was very pleasant and professional during our call. I have no complaint about him. I do have some complaints about the Medicare system and its many faults. In this case, our client decided to cancel her Medicare supplement policy with Company A to get a less expensive policy with Company B. The change was to take effect on February 1, 2018. We helped the client to send a cancellation letter in a timely manner before the desired cancellation date. But, two and a half months after the switch to the new insurance company, Medicare had not yet removed the old insurance company from her file. Medicare records showed our client as having two active policies with different insurance companies for the same insurance coverage. In a phone call to the old insurance company prior to the call to Medicare, the old insurance company reported that it had cancelled our client’s policy as requested and had informed Medicare that the policy was cancelled. But, the Medicare

representative checked with his supervisors. The Medicare supervisors claimed that the old insurance company never told Medicare to cancel the old policy. This is not the only time that such a thing has happened to one of our clients. This and similar failures to update Medicare records happen often. One common scenario is when Medicare fails to make a timely update when a person retires and is no longer on an employer’s group health plan. That really messes up claims of a senior citizen who just started to use Medicare. I’d really like to talk with the people who run Medicare to tell them about the many faults of the Medicare system that I have encountered during the 15 years that I have fought mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system to protect clients of this insurance agency. But, so far, no official in Medicare seems to want to hear about the many problems. No one can correct a problem while being unwilling to learn what the problem is. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicare Problems.com) and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com.

Who is Right? ARLO KALLEMEYN Internet parable: There was an Indian Chief who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest.., in turn.., to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away. The first son went in the Winter, the second in the Spring, the third in Summer, and the youngest son in the Fall. When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen. The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted. The second son said ‘no’ it was covered with green buds and full of promise. The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful. It was the most graceful thing he had ever seen. The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment. The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree’s life. He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end, when all the seasons are up. If you give up when it’s Winter, you will miss the promise of your Spring, the beauty of your Summer, the fulfillment of your Fall. Moral: Don’t let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don’t judge life by one difficult season. Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come. Live Simply. Love Generously. Care Deeply. Speak Kindly. Leave the Rest to God. Best regards from Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper publisher and big fan of changing seasons – especially Spring!

CHRISTINE AND TODD TIE THE KNOT AT ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH IN TINLEY PA R K: T he chu rch, d raped i n wh ite f lowers w it h t he soloist singing “Ave Maria” provided the spiritual backdrop for the double ring ceremony. A light rain fell but did not dampen the spirit of the wedding or of the fun to come at the Patrick Haley Mansion in Joliet. Parents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Melant, and of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. Dea n Triller, of fered toasts a nd best wishes for the newlyweds while “Waz,” t he pia no player f rom t he Mu n ster Per for m i ng A r ts Center, played sof t jazz, getting everyone in the mood for a fun and festive evening. Guests were encouraged to explore the entire 4 story mansion (said to be haunted!) with its many fireplaces (all blazing), turn of the century decor, and nooks and crannies in which to sit and visit. Waitstaff passed silver trays of amazing appetizers and the meal was Martha Stewart perfect. After dinner as all went exploring, a climb to the top floor rewarded guests with flutes of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. Pictured here are Todd and Christine offering their own toast to their family and friends, and a family picture of Spencer and Jennifer Minton, Larry and JMK, David and Diane Hauptman, Dean Triller, and Glenn Triller. It was truly an evening of Love, Laughter and Celebration ! Long May Christine and Todd Love! ***
