— Proverbs 10:12
Here is a recipe that will give you delicious BBQ ribs without standing over the smoker or grill all day. 2 slabs of baby back ribs from Walts Moo & Oink BBQ Sprinkle Apple Cider Vinegar Brown Sugar Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce Trim fat and remove membrane from ribs – use a butter knife and paper towel. Rinse ribs. Cut into 5 portions—yes 2 people will get a bigger portion. Who’s your favorite? Liberally season both sides with BBQ Sprinkle. Place ribs in Ziplock bag and refrigerate 2-6 hours. Heat 1 cup apple cider with 1 cup water and ¼ cup brown sugar. Use large baking sheet with 1” sides. Place ribs on sheet and pour cider into bottom. Cover with aluminum foil to keep steam in. Cook in oven at 225 degrees for 3 hours. Remove from oven and refrigerate overnight. Broil for 10-15 minutes on your gas grill—watch carefully—flip often and don’t burn em! Slather ribs with BBQ sauce. Grill for another 10 minutes at reduced heat. Serve with cornbread—and plenty of napkins. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of all things BBQ!

LaTanya Allen, who in 2010 earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree from the Court Reporting/Verbatim Technology Program at South Suburban College (SSC), was recently sworn in as President of the Mississippi Court Reporters Association, making her the third African-American to hold that position in their 53-year history. She is also a member of the National Court Reporters Association, serves on the National Committee of State Associations (NCSA), and was featured in the Journal of Court Reporters magazine for her dedication to her profession. LaTanya said, “I love court reporting and it has definitely delivered the results I anticipated.” LaTanya credits the program and instructors at SSC. “I entered an environment where my teachers really cared about me and my education – especially LaTherese Cooke. She was always there for me during school and continues to be there for me to this day when asking for advice about choices to make in my profession.” After graduating from SSC, LaTanya passed the Registered Professional Reporter examination given by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). This certification allowed her to become a court reporter in any state in the nation. She eventually moved back to Mississippi and is currently the official court reporter for the 11th Chancery Court District (sub-district 1). She works with a chancellor and travels between three different locations in her position. She enjoys her current role in the judicial system stating, “I’ve been a part of some really amazing hearings and court trials.” LaTanya’s admiration for the legal field is just beginning with court reporting. She stated, “The knowledge that comes within the field, in addition to the research, studying and strategy of it all made me want to go back to get my paralegal degree.” LaTanya also holds the title of “Certified Court Administrator” and she will be taking her entrance exam for law school soon. “I would definitely not be where I am today if SSC didn’t initially reach out to me and open the door to the amazing field of court reporting,” said LaTanya. “I’m proud to be an alumni and can’t wait to see what else the legal field has in store for me.” A Court Reporting/Verbatim Technology Program open house will be held on July 26, 2018 between 7 PM and 8:30 PM in room 5190 at SSC’s Oak Forest Center. Turn of Phrase Spill the Beans, meaning to reveal a secret: It’s said that the ancient Greeks
cast votes using black or white beans, to represent yes and no. Each voter placed a bean into a pot or helmet secretly; the result of the vote was revealed by spilling out the beans and counting them.

_______________________________
The Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation is throwing the third annual Mark Hill Memorial Golf Outing at White Hawk Country Club of Crown Point beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 1. Mark Hill was an avid golfer. Before he passed away in 2015 from a two-year battle with stomach cancer, he planned the event to benefit the NICK Foundation. “When we knew he wouldn’t survive, Mark and I sat down to plan this golf outing before he passed,” said Al Konieczka, Mark’s close friend and event organizer. “He picked the location, event activities and the organization it would benefit.” Konieczka knew that Mark’s heart broke for children battling cancer. He remembered Mark would say, “I have lived a long life, but the children receiving treatment deserve that too.” One of Mark’s closest friend and co-worker at Centier Bank, Dave Giedemann, reminisced on his participation in last year’s event. Each year, Centier Bank actively supports the event in his honor. “Naming this charity outing after Mark could not be more appropriate,” said Giedemann, “The outing in his name will continue to let us remember all the great things he stood for.” To purchase a golf package for one participant is $125 and for a group of four golfers is $450. The package includes lunch, driving range balls, a round of 18 holes with cart and dinner. Activities such as dinner and a chance to win raffle prizes and gift baskets will take place after the golf rounds at 5 p.m. Dinner is $35 per person for those who did not purchase the golf package. There are many opportunities to be a part of the event. To become an event sponsor, register a team, or find out how you can donate or volunteer visit nwicancerkids.org or call 219765-7677. The NICK Foundation, founded in 2009, will use the proceeds to support northwest Indiana families in their journey with childhood cancer and support research efforts that seek to cure pediatric cancer.

Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide. The Society mobilizes people and resources so that everyone affected by multiple sclerosis can live their best lives as we stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. SSC Awarded by IL Historical Society
South Suburban College received a Certificate of Excellence for their 90-Year Anniversary Historic Wall Display ______________________________________
The Illinois State Historical Society recently presented their annual awards to groups or organizations that have furthered the collection, preservation, and/or interpretation of an aspect of Illinois history. Judging was done by an Awards Committee appointed by the President of the Society and presentation of awards took place at the Illinois State Historical Society Annual Awards Luncheon in the old State Capitol building in Springfield. South Suburban College received a Certificate of Excellence for their project: South Suburban College: 90-Year Anniversary Historic Wall Display. “The project provides its audience with both an immediate and long-lasting recognition for the significance of this milestone anniversary, said the State Historical Society. “The timeline book and community activities were well-planned, thus ensuring the college’s anniversary was celebrated by past and future graduates. The college has a tradition of creating individual walls to display the history of the various towns they serve. How appropriate that the college dedicates a wall for their own story.” The College hosted a dedication ceremony for the new College History Wall and Display on Thursday, November 9, 2017 in the atrium of the College’s Main Campus. The display features photos and memorabilia from the college’s 90-year history. Many students, faculty, staff and administrators joined in honoring the institution that has made its place in the community and enriched the lives of so many. South Suburban College continues to grow with the changing cultural, technological and educational needs of the 21st century. Throughout our many years of service, thousands of people have received their education and gone on to improve their lives and their community. We at SSC are proud of our history of quality, convenience and affordability. The wall and display are now permanent features of the college located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, IL. The public is invited to stop by Monday through Friday to view the display. For more information about all of SSC’s programs, admissions and registration, please visit www.ssc.edu or contact the Admissions Office at (708) 210-5718. Village of South Holland US Postal Service Urges Recognizes Thornwood Teacher Mailbox Repair & Improvement
By Patricia Muhammad Danny Gray’s third period class at Thornwood were not just filled with students on May 8, but several Village officials, Thornwood Administrators, and teachers dropped in to congratulate him as he accepted the Red Tulip award; an exceptional award given by the Village of South Holland. The award recognizes educators who demonstrate exemplary commitment towards educating students. A $250 cash prize came with the award. “Teachers don’t get enough recognition honestly for what they do and so it was just our way to really show how much we as a village, the mayor, and the village board administrator appreciate the teachers here in South Holland, especially the ones that are doing exceptional work. The write-ups (for Red Tulip Award) that we got are really awesome and it was a tough decision from the education committee but, we are very excited that we are able to do this,” said Pat Mahon, Deputy Village Administrator for South Holland. District 205 PR spokesperson, Rakyah Merriweather stated that Gray has been a member of Thornwood’s faculty for seven years. In the classroom, Gray teaches several business classes including Introduction to Business, Principles of Entrepreneurship and Intermediate Entrepreneurship. He is known to spend long hours on Saturday’s to help students with their work. “My motivation is my students and they make me better. This recognition means a lot for everything that I do; most importantly, it means that I make a
difference in their lives,” Gray said. In a letter of recommendation for Gray, Principal Dennis Willis writes, “It is with great pleasure that Thornwood High School recommends Mr. Danny Gray for the Red Tulip Award. Mr. Gray is truly a dedicated Thornwood teacher that provides exceptional services to our students and school; to serve and help others.” In Willis’ letter of recommendation, phrases such as “high expectation,” “making students empowered,” and “prominent role model” all describe Gray’s teaching style. He also created a program for teachers and students at Thornwood called Creating Positive Relationships (CPR). Gray actively supports A Few Good Men mentoring program for male students at the school. His track record shows that he has a reputation for winning city, state and national competitions. According to Mahon, Gray will be recognized by the Village Mayor and the Board of Trustees on June 4 at 8 p.m. at the Village Hall. There will be a proclamation for him and during the ceremony, and Mahon added that he will receive a monetary award. The public is invited. “Being on the Committee of the South Holland Education Commission, we think it is important to acknowledge teachers that have good rapport with their students and who go beyond the norm of what teachers are expected to do,” said Art T. Burton, local author and historian.

• Replacing or adding house numbers. “If a homeowner plans to install a new mailbox or replace a worn one, he or she must use only Postal Service–approved traditional, contemporary or locking full/limited service mailboxes,” said Bush. “Customers must be careful when purchasing curbside mail receptacles because the use of unapproved boxes is prohibited. Customers may use a custom-built mailbox, but they must consult with their local Post Office to ensure it conforms to guidelines applying to flag, size, strength and quality of construction.” For more information on the use of names or numbers on mailboxes, or answers to any other questions, contact your local Post Office directly. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

BEDFORD PARK, IL — The U.S. Postal Service is asking all homeowners to inspect and repair their mailboxes during Mailbox Improvement Week, May 13–19, says A/ Central Illinois District Manager Tangela L. Bush. “Repairing suburban and rural mailboxes improves the appearance of your community and makes delivering and receiving mail safer for our carriers and customers,” says Bush. The Postal Service makes this annual request because of the wear and tear that occurs to mailboxes every year. “This is especially important after the effects of last winter,” adds Bush. Some of the typical activities homeowners may need to do include: • Replacing loose hinges on a mailbox door. • Repainting a mailbox that may have rusted or has started to peel. • Remounting a loosened mailbox post.

Five Ways to Protect Your Data On Social Media The Facebook data breach opened a Pandora’s box of concerns for social media consumers. The company estimated that data firm Cambridge Analytica may have had information on about 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge. In testimony before the U.S. Senate, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised to do more to protect the privacy of users’ data. But according to studies by the Pew Research Center, people haven’t had much faith in social media firms’ capacity to do just that. A Pew survey last year found that only 9 percent of social media users were “very confident” that companies would protect their data. About half were “not at all” or “not too confident” their data were in safe hands. With so many people concerned about what private data is shared by social media sites and with whom, the CEO of a social media app says users need to do more to protect their information and be aware of how their data can be used. “In the past 60 days there has been a profound awakening by the average social media user about data privacy and trust regarding social media companies,” says Scott Relf, CEO and co-founder of PikMobile Inc., an ad-free social media app that allows users to share content through a unique viewing platform.
“All of the other social media companies are equally as guilty as Facebook—Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Google. These companies are betraying their users’ trust by selling them out, and all of this with virtually no regulations or accountability to anyone.” Relf suggests five ways social media users can better protect their data: 1. Know the people you friend. Don’t accept friend or follow requests from people you don’t know, even if it appears you have friends in common. “They could be fake accounts from cybercriminals, bots, or just bad people,” Relf says. “And the more people you’re connected to, the harder it is to control what happens to the information you post.” 2. Skip the quizzes. Those IQ or personality tests you find on social media may take you to unsecure sites, Relf says, making you vulnerable to identity theft by using information found on your account as well as the answers you provide to the quiz. 3. Select a private profile for maximum control. “Consider your needs,” Relf says. “If you use social media mainly to keep in touch with friends, you may not need a widely open setting. If you use social media for work purposes, consider two accounts: a private personal account as well as a more public business one.”
4. Use strong passwords and don’t share them. Passwords should be memorable only to the user and kept to themselves. “Likewise, lock your phone with a pin or pattern, so that if you do lose it, whoever finds it doesn’t have easy access to your entire online life,” Relf says. 5. Don’t opt-in to social media facial recognition. “The only logical reason for your social media service to ask for your facial recognition is so that they can do an even better job of harvesting your data and targeting you with ads,” Relf says. “Ideally, social media users should choose what they feed into their mind all day long,” Relf says. “Don’t give up control of your news feed to companies and advertisers that harvest your data for their benefit.” Scott Relf and his wife Renee are the co-founders of PikMobile (www.pikmobile.com), a dual-function mobile app that combines a unique viewing platform and a digital content publishing system. A former senior executive for several large corporations, Relf has expertise in bringing breakthrough products and services into the consumer mass market. He sold his startup Zave Networks to Google in 2011. Relf earned a BA in management and economics from Rice University and an MSBA in management from the Boston University Questrom School of Business.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Unsolicited Offers MIKE BUDER You come home from a long day at work, and there it is…a letter in your mail box saying that someone wants to buy your home. Of course, then you realize they’ve never even been inside your home. So how serious can they possibly be? Today, you will find many “Cable TV Investors”, and even some real estate agents resorting to writing letters to people whose homes are not listed for sale. Agents may write that they have some buyers for your home and ask if you would be willing to open up negotiations to sell. Sometimes the investors will write letters about how they’ve been unlucky in house hunting, and they love the way your house looks on the outside and “they want it”. On the surface, this could be an interesting proposition, at least if you’ve had moving on your mind as more than a remote possibility. Could this be your home selling “easy button”? Maybe, if the letter is from an agent, she or he might have buyers who may want your neighborhood, but their main purpose might be to get a foot in the door as a possible listing agent if you are indeed interested in making a move. If the letter is from an investor/ buyer, you might want to ask why they haven’t been able to find something that’s listed. They could be making low ball offers.
They might be overly picky. They may have deals fall apart over unreasonable home inspection demands, financial funkiness, or some other issue that could complicate their purchase of your home. Whatever your first reaction to the solicitation, you need some good advice, and not from whoever slipped that note in your mailbox. The big question is what’s your home really worth? The market will normally get you a higher price! So if you are interested enough in selling to respond to the inquiry in your mailbox, you should start by finding your own agent. If there’s already an agent you like and trust, start there. If you don’t have a favorite, get some recommendations from friends or colleagues. Have them run a market analysis and give you some professional advice on the best way to market your home. Sure, when you hear someone offering to make your house selling easy, it’s tempting. But it’s not really that easy…If it were, Realtors wouldn’t get paid for doing it! Grants for Field Trips to State Parks Educators interested in taking students, grades K-12, on field trips to an Indiana state park or state-managed lake in the 2018-2019 school year can receive financial help through the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation (INRF). Grants from the Discover the Outdoors Fund are available for public, private, parochial or home-school educators, according to INRF director Jody Kress. “Part of our mission at the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation is to encourage educational programs of DNR,” Kress said. “The grant gets kids outside for an adventure that teaches the importance of preserving and protecting our natural resources.” Since the grant program’s inception in 2013, a total of 111 grants have been awarded, providing the opportunity for more than 8,000 students to visit state parks at less cost to the schools and students. Indiana has 24 state parks and eight state-managed lakes eligible for field trip funding that will engage students in learning about Indiana’s fish, forest, wildlife, natural habitats and conservation. “These trips help children understand how previous generations viewed the significance of Indiana’s natural and cultural resources, and at the same time let them make great memories that they will carry into adulthood,” said Ginger Murphy, deputy director for stewardship for DNR State Parks. The maximum grant award is $250 per application. Applications are accepted from May 1-June 30 prior to the school year for which the grant is requested. Applications must be postmarked no later than June 30. Applicants will be notified by Aug. 15 regarding potential grant awards. The grant application is at IN.gov/inrf/educate.html. A video explaining the program is at youtu.be/uC4QjhsBLO8 The INRF is accepting donations to the fund from individuals, businesses or anyone who supports the idea of getting kids outdoors. The fund was established in memory of Tom Huck, a longtime DNR employee who was an ardent supporter of outdoor experiences for children. For further information, including how to donate, email DiscoverOutdoorsGrants@dnr.IN.gov.

RICHARD ZEKVELD live in a messed-up world. Disappointment is an invitation to look up. People and situations will disappoint us. But God, ultimately, will not disappoint those who trust him. In Psalm 22, David voices disappointment with God. “Oh my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer” (22:2). Then he reflects on God’s faithfulness. “In you our fathers put their trust… in you they trusted and were not disappointed” (22:4-5). Jesus cried out the words of this psalm. He stepped into our skin to experience our disappointments in our messed-up world. He felt acutely that things are not the way they’re supposed to be. He gave his life to make everything the way its supposed to be again. Disappointment, then, is also an invitation to look forward to the day when all disappointment will give way to total satisfaction and joy. Forever. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church
Disappointment. It’s what you feel after someone doesn’t live up to your expectations. It’s grief that follows the death of a dream. It’s disillusionment on the heels of extinguished hope. You had high hopes for a relationship. Then reality set in. You expected the promotion. Your co-worker got it instead. You looked up to him. Then he messed up. You set lofty goals. But you let yourself down. You anticipated children. Now you’re sixty and childless. You’ve prayed for healing. God took her away instead. It’s hard to live with disappointment. It’s easier to cope with it in destructive ways. It’s easier to slide into bitterness. It’s tempting to turn our pain outward to punish others. It’s tempting to shield ourselves with cynicism. “I will never hope again. Then I won’t be disappointed.” Allow for disappointment. Grieve it. Disappointment is sadness that things aren’t the way they’re supposed to be. We

Speaking Of Seniors
Medicare Gummed Up Claims WOODROW WILCOX On March 6 and April 9, 2018, I helped a senior citizen client with a medical bill problem. The client is from Lowell, Indiana. On March 6, I was told that the client’s insurance company paid the balance of the claim entirely. But, then Medicare made an adjustment. So, I wrote a letter to the billing medical service provider to have that firm contact our client’s insurance company to review and resolve the problem for our client. On April 9, the client got a “final notice” statement from the billing medical firm. The client faxed the letter to me and I went to work for the client. I contacted both the client’s insurance company and Medicare to request documents to be sent to our client so that he can bring them to me to review with him. Based on my phone conversations, this is what I understand happened. Our client got medical services from one firm on January 9 and from another firm on January 10. At first, Medicare ruled that his insurance company should pay $27.60 to the first firm and the insurance company paid it. But, then Medicare changed its determination and told the insurance company to pay the same $27.60 to the second firm. But, the insurance company is obligated to pay $27.60 only once – not twice under the rules of what happened. This small amount of money is causing a problem for our client. It is a mess to fix. The insurance company has asked the first firm to return the money that it was paid so that the insurance company can pay that money to the second firm as directed by Medicare’s revised ruling on the claims. Who caused this problem? It was not the senior citizen. Nor was it his insurance company. MEDICARE CAUSED THE PROBLEM. Maybe it should be renamed MEDISCARE. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved senior citizen clients over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems.com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I want to know exactly where the property line is between my house and my neighbor. My sister told me it doesn’t matter because it’s not much to care about and I would have to take care the grass. Do you think she’s right? If she isn’t, then what should I do to re-measure my property? Answer: To determine your property’s exact boundaries you want to get a survey by a licensed surveyor. Knowing the precise boundaries of your property is important. First, you want to assure that you’re not paying taxes on property used by a neighbor. Second, if your neighbor continuously, openly and notoriously uses your property, he may actually obtain title over a number of years. Third, when you sell, you want to assure your buyer that they are getting a given quantity of property and that the boundaries of that property are well defined. Question: We recently listed our home for $500,000 with the broker from whom we originally purchased. We have been under contract for two weeks and although she had the listing on the Internet only, we’ve had a lot of interest. She wanted us to lower the price $20,000, which we did. She brought in someone who will buy, but only

if we carry her for one year. Other brokers have shown it with positive feedback. In our area, homes like ours with acreage sell for upwards to $700,000. Can we break the listing agreement without penalty? Answer: Why did you list the property at $500,000 if other properties sell for $700,000? Why did you lower the price after only a few weeks when marketing has been limited? A listing agreement is a contract and can only end prematurely if both parties agree. Does your agreement give you an option to end early? Speak with the agent or the agent’s broker. See what can be worked out. If the matter cannot be worked out, most brokers will end a listing agreement with an unsatisfied client as a matter of good PR. To help matters along, offer to pay for the broker’s actual costs to date. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of Selling your Home? Ready Illinois Has Preparedness Tips for Special Needs People their caregivers prepare for emergencies. A guidebook, Emergency Preparedness Tips for Those with Functional Needs, offers preparedness tips for people with visual, cognitive, or mobility impairments; people who are deaf or hard of hearing; those who utilize service animals or life support systems; and senior citizens. For each functional need, the guidebook provides a list of supplemental items for a disaster kit, tips on developing an emergency plan, suggestions on how to be better informed about community emergency planning, and a checklist of preparedness activities. The Ready Illinois website also offers more than two dozen preparedness videos in American Sign Language on such topics as what to do before, during, and after tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and flooding; how to build an emergency supply kit; and what to do if you’re instructed to evacuate.
While most disasters can’t be prevented, the stress of such situations can be reduced significantly through personal preparedness. This is particularly important for households with members who have disabilities or functional needs and who may need assistance during an emergency. Throughout May, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies will highlight the importance of disaster preparedness for people with functional and access needs. “Disasters can cause power outages, force people to evacuate their homes, or create other dangerous situations,” said IEMA Acting Director William P. Robertson. “We encourage everyone to be prepared, especially those who may have medical, functional, or access needs.” Robertson said IEMA has information available on the Ready Illinois website (www.Ready.Illinois.gov) to help people and Afghans and throws $10$75; womens new wool coat, paid $17 5, asking $60. 708877-6157

state tax benefit, such as a deduction or credit. • Flexibility in changing investments – You can switch investment options in your 529 plan up to twice a year. Or, if you’d rather take a more hands-off approach, you could select an automatic age-based option that starts out with a heavier emphasis on growth-oriented investments and shifts toward less risky, fixedincome vehicles as the beneficiary approaches college age. To clarify the impact of 529 plans on potential financial aid awards, you might want to consult with a college’s financial aid officer. One final note: In previous years, 529 plans were limited to eligible colleges, universities and trade schools, but starting in 2018, you can also use up to $10,000 per year, per beneficiary, from a 529 plan to pay for tuition expenses at public, private or religious elementary and secondary schools. (Not all states recognize K-12 expenses as qualifying for 529 plan benefits, so consult your local tax advisor before investing.) Education is a great investment in a child’s future. And to make that education more affordable, you might want to make your own investment in a 529 plan. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors cannot provide tax or legal advice. May 29 (5/29) is National 529 College Savings Day. Although these plans have been around since 1996, many people are still unaware of them. And that’s unfortunate, because a 529 plan can be a valuable tool for anyone who wants to help a child, grandchild or other family member save for education expenses. Here are some of the key benefits of a 529 plan: • Potential tax advantages – A 529 plan’s earnings are not subject to federal income taxes, as long as withdrawals are used for qualified education expenses (tuition, room and board, etc.) of the designated beneficiary, such as your child or grandchild. (You will be subject to ordinary income taxes, plus a 10 percent federal penalty, on the earnings portion of withdrawals not used for qualified education expenses.) • High contribution limits • Ability to switch beneficiaries – You might name a particular child or grandchild as a beneficiary of a 529 savings plan, only to see him or her decide not to go to college after all. But as the owner of the plan, you generally may be able to switch beneficiaries whenever you like, right up to the point when they start taking withdrawals. (To make this switch nontaxable and penalty-free, you must designate a new beneficiary who is a member of the same family as the original beneficiary.) • Freedom to invest in any state’s plan – You can invest in the 529 plan offered by any state, regardless of where you live. But if you invest in your own state’s plan, you might receive some type of

V F W P O S T 8141 A N D AU X I L I A R Y HOST 57TH AMERICANISM AWARDS PROGR AM: The event was on Monday April 30th, 2018 starting at 7 p.m. Last week N 2 N ran the names of all the wonderful student winners, their grades and awards. Seeing these young and upcoming artists and w riters participate was a joy. As a lead-in to the festivities, my colleague George T. Kruse and myself were awarded “Outstanding Citizens for Community Activities.” George and I are pictured here holding our flags and smiling for the camera. George has spent a lifetime as a community advocate for Calumet City and no job was too large or too small for him to tackle for the betterment of the community. I got my start in community a d v o c a c y, f i r s t a s a j ou r n a l i s t b y
competing in the Americanism contest in 1959 with American Legion Post 220 on Chicago’s East Side. And as the years went by, I became an advocate for business via Chambers of Commerce, first in Chicago and then, as now, with the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce where I currently serve as Vice President. I won first place in the Americanism contest and that is where I got the bug to write. That, and the fact that I have kept a personal diary my entire life. It is interesting looking back on my teenage folly and wondering, “why on earth did I do that?” I am writing this on Mother’s Day and remembering my beautiful mother, Florence Triller, who would always say, “Just as long as you learn from your mistakes—and don’t repeat them—you are doing great!” When I saw the pride in the faces of the parents of the children who participated and won in the Post 8141 contest last month, it reminded me of my mother’s pride when I won that contest so long ago. Now I share the pride of the students who attend Calumet City schools. I know they are going to go on to greater and greater experiences and much success! *** NEED TO FORM A NETWORK TO HELP WITH BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT? Here is your answer. POSTSCRIPT FOR THE L ATE GRE AT L OU IS NOVA KOV ICH : T he b elov e d Lansing resident passed away too soon last month and he is mourned by his family and friends and the Veterans with whom he spent his last years. We wrote about him at length a few weeks ago but failed to mention that not only was he a member of the Copper Muggers, the South Southeast Side Vietnam Veterans, American Legion Post 697 but also the Lansing Memorial Ceremonia l Honor Guard. The buria l f lag presented to his daughters at his Remembrance at Post 697 was donated by Rich Dominiak, a co-founder of the Honor Guard. Lou is remembered for his sunny disposition and great sense of humor; he managed to make even the hardest of his last days on earth easier on his family with a smile and a nod to never forget them. Even the leather clad Legion Riders, who formed an honor guard that day, wiped away tears. Rest in Peace Dear Lou! *** ANNUAL CAR CRUISE IN DOWNTOWN HIGHLAND: Car fans are anticipating Highland’s 5th annual Downtown Car Cruise, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday June 2nd, 2018. Indiana State Parks Fitness Challenge Planning to get fit in 2018? The Indiana State Parks Fitness Challenge is a great way to track your progress. The challenge encourages visitors to walk, run, bike, paddle or swim at least 25 miles inside one or more of Indiana’s state park properties. If you’re a horseback rider, you can participate by riding at least 100 miles on state park or reservoir horse trails. Those who complete the challenge by Nov. 30 will be entered into a drawing for prizes, including a 2019 Annual Entrance Pass, Outdoor Indiana magazine subscriptions, DNR camping gift cards and State Park Inns gift certificates. Participants must download and keep a Fitness Challenge log that documents their visits to state parks and get a signature from park staff each time they visit. The log and additional information on the challenge is at dnr.IN.gov/healthy. Indiana State Parks director Dan Bortner said state parks offer hundreds of miles of trails that wind past lakes, climb big hills, wander through deep forests and canyons, and explore prairies. Many locations also offer accessible hard-surface trails. “All of these pathways offer opportunities for exercise,” Bortner said. “They also offer the added benefit of just being outdoors, where it is possible to shed the worries and challenges of daily life for a little while.” So, get outside and get healthy this year at the most beautiful fitness centers in the state — Indiana’s state parks.

Kids Learn Animal Care at Critter Camp
In the Pets You Can Get segment, children learn about the many kinds of domestic pets, beyond just cats and dogs, that come to the shelter.
At Critter Camp, children learn humane animal treatment, including responsibility and respect for pets.
_______________________________
Children ages 6 to 11 years old can learn about the humane treatment of animals at Critter Camp, a summer day camp hosted by Humane Indiana. Critter Camp is a five-day camp that provides a fun, safe, hands-on environment for kids to learn about various aspects of animal care and build a sense of respect and responsibility
for animals. Three sessions will be held throughout the summer: June 25 through 29, July 23 through 27 or August 6 through 10. Camp takes place each day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Humane Indiana, 421 45th Ave., Munster, Ind. Each camp session is unique and features a new topic. Campers will do a daily craft, enjoy a snack (campers
must supply their own lunches), and have interactive presentations about animals. Past presenters have included a veterinarian, dog trainer, Wildlife Rehabilitator, and more. The registration fee is $150 per camper per session. Camp size is limited. For more information or to register visit humaneindiana.org/critter-camp.
