COUPON At the June 6 meeting of Civil Air Patrol’s Thunder Composite Squadron IL-317, the Change of Command Ceremony took place during the monthly promotional meeting transferring command of the squadron from Major Gary Sprigg to Major Barbara Buckner. Major Buckner began her CAP career as a cadet at what is now Magnus Composite Squadron. As a senior member, Major Buckner has served at all levels, from squadron Deputy Commander of Cadets, to Group, Wing and National level positions. She also brings with her outside contacts with the Women in Aviation group and other industry aviation contacts. Major Gary Sprigg, a veteran of the Canadian Air Force has served CAP for 10 years and was Commander of Thunder Squadron for the past 3 1/2 years. Thunder Composite Squadron is nearing its 33rd anniversary. The squadron was chartered on July 8, 1985 at Jones Memorial Center in Chicago Heights as a way to help the youth in the area (who were primarily being raised in poor, single-mother homes). and was named after the founder’s dog, Thunder. In her new role, Major Buckner’s goals include continuation of growth in membership of what is the second largest unit in Group 2 and the 7th largest Wing-wide, recruitment of additional senior members, additional emergency services training opportunities and expanding of aerospace education and STEM programs. Also attending the ceremony were several special guests, including Lansing Mayor Patty Eidam, Illinois Wing Group 2

Commander Major Michael Larson, and Lt Col Al Reynoso, former Illinois Wing Group 2 Commander. Also part of that evening’s meeting were the following promotions: Thunder’s Cadet Commander, Lucas Vanderwoude, completed the second milestone in the cadet program and was promoted to Second Lieutenant. C/SSgt Brendon Gilb promoted to cadet Staff Sergeant, Hugo Recio Jr was promoted to cadet Senior Airman, and Ian Steinweg was promoted to cadet Master Sergeant. In addition, Jomareun Richardson completed his final achievement to be able to now test to become a cadet Second Lieutenant, The Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program aims to teach today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leaders. It opens the door to a variety of experiences that cadets can then use when they go on to college or enter the job market. Cadets are given the opportunity to learn more about aviation, which includes hands-on flight instruction in a CAP Cessna aircraft. They are also encouraged to take part in additional training opportunities provided, such as First Air/CPR certification, so that they can assist the organization in Emergency Services missions and know how to react and assist their family, friends and the community. Civil Air Patrol is a auxiliary program of the United States Air Force and is open to youths age 12 - 21. Thunder Composite Squadron meets every Wednesday from 6:30-9pm at Heritage Middle School in Lansing, Illinois with members from surrounding communities such as Calumet City, Mokena, Lynwood, Dyer, Munster and Schererville. Lansing’s Flag Depository Offers Respectful Disposal of Old Flags

From The Publisher

Duck Church ARLO KALLEMEYN Soren Kierkegaard, a Danish philosopher who lived in the 1800’s, told the story of a magical land inhabited only by ducks. Being good ducks, they went to church each week. One fine Lord’s Day, he wrote, all the ducks dutifully waddled to duck church, where the parson duck stood to deliver his homily. He opened his duck Bible to the place where it spoke of God’s great gift to ducks—wings. “With wings”, said the duck preacher, “we ducks can fly! We can mount up like eagles and soar the heavens! We can escape the confinement of pens and fences; we can know the utter euphoria of unfettered freedom! We must give God thanks for such a great gift as wings!” To which all of the ducks in duck church stood to their feet with a hearty “Amen!” And then, they turned around…and waddled home. By Melanie Jongsma Proper flag etiquette dictates that a flag that has become faded, torn, or stained should be disposed of properly. Lansing residents have access to a flag depository where they can place American flags that are ready for retirement. The depository is located on the south side of the Lansing Municipal Center (3141 Ridge Road). It is outside the building, so flags can be deposited there 24 hours a day. Friday to remove any flags that have been deposited throughout the week. Holidays such as Flag Day, Veterans Day, and Independence Day often result in higher use of the depository, so on those occasions, Zigterman often checks twice a week. Though even a torn, faded American flag deserves a respectful disposal, Zigterman says the depository often contains flags that are balled up or bagged rather than being folded properly and placed in the receptacle. App Assists Military Veterans with Claims The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) recently launched a first-of-its-kind app for use by military veterans and their advocates, available for download through the NVLSP website, Apple App Store, or Google Play Store. Named the NVLSP VA Benefit Identifier, the application helps veterans, with or without the assistance of a veteran’s service officer, determine specific VA benefits to which they are likely entitled. Veteran Rob Concklin found the app helpful and commented on Facebook. “I just wanted to write and say thanks for the benefits app. I went thru it, made a claim for five service connected conditions, three were granted immediately. I probably wouldn’t have even made the claim if it weren’t for your app.” A fourth condition was granted later for Concklin and while one condition was denied, Concklin was pleased he filed a claim. The app directs users to a logic based questionnaire that assists in verifying whether a veteran should file a claim for service-connected disability benefits or nonserviceconnected disability pension. The survey addresses all possible disabilities covered by VA regulations. Created in both English and Spanish, the app functions as a comprehensive logic tree, generating additional questions from previously supplied answers. To protect privacy, no data or personally identifiable information is retained. Once the questionnaire is completed, results can be emailed or printed and used as a reference when filing claims for VA benefits. “We’re hoping to maximize the benefit of this app for veterans by offering it as a free service, without any cost for downloading and utilizing,” said Bart Stichman, co-founder and executive director of NVLSP. “We want to provide a supplementary means for veterans to decide what their best options are in filing a claim for disability benefits.” NVLSP’s VA Benefit Identifier app does not assist with claims for a higher rating for disabilities the VA has already connected to military service; claims previously filed with the VA; or claims for disabilities resulting from VA health care, VA vocational rehabilitation or participation in a VA

Compensated Work Therapy program. In completing the Identifier questionnaire, veterans should have documents available about their military service (DD Form 214), information about medical conditions and any prior VA decisions or related communications. Upon completing the survey, veterans are advised to schedule an appointment with a veteran’s advocate chosen from a list of Veterans Service Organizations furnished in the app. Veteran’s advocates are regularly available to assist with applications for VA disability benefits, free of charge. A key highlight of the NVLSP VA Benefit Identifier is its ability to appropriately recommend when veterans should file for specific conditions, prompting them to submit an “intent to file” form with the VA, while further providing timelines and instruction on how to proceed with a formal claim. NVLSP’s app features an easy to navigate interface allowing veterans to interact with a support point person, and can be downloaded from the NVLSP website to any web-enabled smart device. NVLSP recently fixed some bugs in the app in May that had frustrated a handful of users, and the problems identified were corrected. Download the NVLSP VA Benefit Identifier app on NVLSP’s website, from the Apple App Store, or from the Google Play Store. The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) is an independent, nonprofit veterans service organization that has served active duty military personnel and veterans since 1980. NVLSP strives to ensure that our nation honors its commitment to its 22 million veterans and active duty personnel by ensuring they have the federal benefits they have earned through their service to our country. NVSLP offers training for attorneys and other advocates; connects veterans and active duty personnel with pro bono legal help when seeking disability benefits; publishes the nation’s definitive guide on veteran benefits; and represents and litigates for veterans and their families before the VA, military discharge review agencies and federal courts. Rules of the Road “Dutch Reach”Technique Helps Drivers Avoid Bicycle Collisions Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White joined officials from the City of Chicago and other organizations at Eckhart Park to encourage bicyclists to practice safe riding during Chicago Bike Week, which was June 21 through June 29. White said the Dutch Reach, a technique drivers are encouraged to use in order to avoid hitting bicyclists with their car doors, is included in the 2018 Rules of the Road. With the Dutch Reach, drivers are to use their right hand to open the car door, forcing their upper body to turn and look for oncoming cyclists. Once the bill is signed, test questions on the Dutch Reach and other bike safety measures will be included on the Secretary of State’s driver’s exam. “This legislation will help improve safety between drivers and bicyclists who share the roads,” said White. “By adding questions to our written exam about bike safety, drivers will be more aware of the deadly consequences that can occur if you do not follow the Rules of the Road.” HB 5143 and HB 5632 when signed into law will go into effect Jan. 1, 2019. Sponsors of HB 5143 were Rep. Theresa Mah (D-Chicago) and Sen. Omar Aquino (D-Chicago) and sponsors of HB 5632 were Rep. Christian Mitchell (D-Chicago) and Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago). “Summer is a wonderful time to spend outdoors biking, so I encourage drivers and cyclists to be mindful of one another so everyone is safe,” said Ald. Walter Burnett (27th). “Our city’s bike routes serve as a great resource for young and old to enjoy this fun activity, and get around the city safely.” CDOT Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld said, “We applaud the General Assembly and Secretary of State Jesse White for working to enhance bike safety education for motor vehicle drivers. These efforts complement Chicago’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2026.” “For bicyclists and motorists to safely share the road, both must responsibly obey all traffic laws,” said 12th District Commander Stephen Chung. Representatives from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the City of Chicago Bicycle Ambassadors, Divvy, Ride Illinois and Active Transportation Alliance also participated in the event. Key tips regarding bike safety: • A properly fitted helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45 percent, yet less than half of children age 14 and under usually wear a helmet, according to Safe Kids Worldwide. Prom/formal dresses $10 ea; tools asst. new $3 ea; oak door 80” x 24” $10; new lavatory faucet & drain $5. 708-460-6035

Ceiling light fixture new black cast iron kichler $10; purses, shoes, adult, children, men, ladies $3 ea. 708-460-6035

• In 2017, six cyclists were killed in Chicago, according to the Chicago Police Department. During that same year across the state, 26 cyclists were killed. So far in Chicago this year, one cyclist has been killed. In the state of Illinois, five cyclists were killed. • In 2016, of the 840 cyclists killed nationwide, children under 15 years old accounted for 7 percent of bicyclist fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. • Never park in a bike lane. Parking in a bike lane forces cyclists to merge with faster moving traffic, endangering them and other motorists. Driving, parking, standing or stopping in a bike lane is illegal and can result in towing and fines. • Pass cyclists at a safe distance by leaving at least three feet of space. Passing cyclists too closely is dangerous and illegal. Remember that cyclists are allowed to take the lane and are not required to ride in a bike lane, even if one is present. Voters Urged to Weigh In on Lake County Precinct Consolidation A law passed by the Indiana General Assembly earlier this year required the Indiana Election Commission to consolidate certain small Lake County precincts. If they did not complete the work by July 1, the responsibility was given to Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson. The Indiana Election Commission did not adopt a plan by the July 1 deadline, despite multiple meetings during which commission members deadlocked on party lines. Under Public Law 210-2018, Secretary Lawson is required to issue an order to consolidate precincts not later than August 1, 2018. Secretary Lawson is now calling on Lake County voters to help her identify solutions. If a voter has a specific proposal or concern regarding the Lake County precinct consolidation, share that information with the Secretary of State’s office. “I want to hear from individual voters in Lake County about how to make this consolidation work best for you,” said Secretary Lawson. “I encourage voters to identify any specific examples where combining small precincts would either realize savings for Lake County or impose an unreasonable obstacle to voters who wish to vote in person at the polls. Any and all feedback is welcome, however by law time is very limited.” To meet the August 1st deadline, the Secretary of State’s office asks that any specific proposals be received no later than 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time on July 13, 2018. The Secretary of State’s office can be reached at sos@sos.in.gov or 317-2326532.

Fearsome Dragonflies TOM BERG

page

Help Wanted: Need parttime sales caller. Cash daily. South Holland area. Transportation provided. Call only 8a-9a. 708-7992363

Dragonflies are carnivorous aerial predators. They have a long body and two pairs of clear wings. The head is dominated by two large, multifaceted eyes that give them superior vision. Dragonflies are also colorful creatures, appearing in almost every color of the rainbow, with some species sporting bright, iridescent colors. There is a vast number of dragonfly species in the United States, and there are more than 3,000 species worldwide. Dragonflies are incredibly nimble and fast. Some species can fly over 30 mph, and they can migrate for long distances, just like birds. Dragonflies can also fly in any direction, and often change direction almost instantly. They can even fly backwards! Their awesome flying skills come in very handy when it comes time for them to hunt for food. Adult dragonflies hunt for insects on the wing, and they are extremely adept at catching small bugs in mid-air. They catch everything from mosquitoes and flying ants

Help Wanted: Inter Model Class A CDL Driver wanted. Home everyday, working out of Harvey, IL. Pay $1000 per week. Ask for John. 708-6463141

to moths and flying beetles. Dragonflies quickly kill and eat most of their prey in midair; larger insects are killed and carried to a nearby branch to be consumed. Their aerial antics burn a lot of energy, so they often eat as much as 20% of their body weight every day. Surprisingly, dragonflies spend most of their lives under water (years for some species), living as nymphs on the bottom of ponds, lakes, creeks and rivers. They eat mosquito larvae and other aquatic insects underwater, but they also catch and eat larger prey like small tadpoles and even tiny newlyhatched fish. When the time is right, they emerge from the water as a winged adult and fly away. Dragonflies have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, but we should be glad the species from prehistoric times are extinct. Fossils from 325 million years ago have shown that some ancient dragonflies had wingspans of 30 inches! Those dragonflies would be fierce predators, indeed!

Wallene Swentko and Kathy Benko, classmates from Bishop Noll’s class of 1963, are helping build a float for this year’s Pierogi Fest Polka Parade.

_______________________________

Bishop Noll Institute is joining the fun of Pierogi Fest! Alumni and volunteers are creating a float for this year’s Polka Parade. The wacky, fun filled Polka Parade runs from Davis Ave. & 119th Street to 119th Street & New York Ave., from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. on July 27 in Whiting, IN. The popular parade features the world famous Pierogi Fest® Buscia Brigade, the Lawnmower Brigade, the Pierogi Pups, Mr. Pierogi® and Friends, and many other long running favorites. Alumni have worked hard to plan this year’s BNI float, which will focus on the Past, Present and Future of Bishop Noll as the Catholic high school in Hammond nears its 100th birthday. All Bishop Noll alumni and friends are also invited to meet before or after the parade in a private room at the Center Lounge, 1312 - 119th St. Hours are 3 to 10 p.m. “This promises to be a lot of fun,” BNI President Paul Mullaney said. “The enthusiasm shown by our alumni in preparing the float and related festivities is contagious. I can’t wait to celebrate our history, our alumni, our current students and our future, which is being solidified by our Ignite & Inspire capital campaign.” To learn how to help with BNI’s Pierogi Fest events, email pmullaney@bishopnoll.org. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Last Thursday, as I pulled up in front of my friend’s house for our weekly walk, a steady rain began to fall. He put on a plastic poncho. I opted for an umbrella. His proved the better choice. Halfway into our walk, the storm hit. Lightning flashed and thunder crashed a bit too close for comfort. The wind picked up and, suddenly, torrential rains turned horizontal. At this point, my umbrella was an irrelevant accessory on the verge of turning inside out or launching me into a Mary Poppins moment. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I informed my friend it was time to close the umbrella and make a beeline for my vehicle. As he darted back into his house, I plopped into my driver’s seat, drenched and dripping. Four hours later, my van seat was still soaked. As I drove to a class, it returned the gift of wetness to my backside. We can’t prevent storms. Sometimes, we

can’t even predict them. We can, however, prepare for them. That’s not just true of thunderstorms. That’s true of all kinds of disasters, crises and hardships that broadside our lives. Communities prepare disaster readiness plans. Schools run fire drills. Families check fire alarms and extinguishers. Jesus urges us to prepare spiritually for life’s storms. “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25). To learn more about anchoring your life in Jesus and his truth, visit a local church or reach out to a local pastor. Richard Zekveld, Pastor Covenant Fellowship Church

Speaking Of Seniors

Saved Crown Point Senior Over $700 WOODROW WILCOX From February through June of 2018, I helped a senior citizen client to fix errors in his record with Medicare to get over $700 of bills paid. If I had not helped him, he would have had to pay those bills plus others in the future because Medicare had his records wrong. Our senior citizen client switched to Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy that he bought through our agency. The switch was to occur on August 1, 2017. But, Medicare never updated his record to show that fact until sometime after the client and I contacted Medicare on February 7, 2018. I helped the client to mail and fax to Medicare a letter from the client to complain that Medicare had not updated his file. The letter recited the facts which Medicare failed to enter in the record. On June 4, 2018, the client and I phoned and confirmed that Medicare had updated his files with correct information. Then, I sent letters to the hospital that had sent two bills to him and explained what happened. I requested that the hospital refile the claims with Medicare now that the patient’s file had correct information for processing the claim properly. When that happens, our client will owe nothing. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency really does care about our senior citizen clients. We “go the extra mile” to help our clients with this type of medical bill blunder. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

BRANDI SMITS Well, That Was Awkward by Rachel Vail Dependable, upbeat, supportive, funny—Gracie has all those traits and more. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for Gracie to show her true emotions because she is expected to be this kind of person. Gracie’s sister Bret died before she was born, leaving her not knowing how to process those emotions. Obviously her parents are sad about it and have difficult moments when memories of Bret come to the surface. Gracie’s friends are careful not to mention things that could bring up Bret, but as the classic popular mean girl Riley points out, it’s not like Gracie even knew her, so why be upset? So Gracie has learned how to push her feelings aside in order to make sure everyone else is doing ok. But Gracie is having a difficult time pushing aside her newly discovered feelings for her friend, A.J. A.J. is cute and athletic and is recently challenging Gracie’s ability to breathe or speak in his presence. When Riley asks Gracie to do some undercover work to find out who A.J. likes, Gracie looks to one of her closest friends, Emmett, to ask A.J. Gracie is surprised to learn that it’s not Riley or herself that A.J. fancies, but Gracie’s other best friend, Sienna. Sienna has also been hiding a crush on the highly sought-after A.J., but she isn’t as confident as Gracie and asks her to text A.J., posing as Sienna. Gracie wants to share her feelings, especially since she’s the one actually texting A.J., but she knows that others would get hurt. Author Vail is so attuned to real teen woes, that middle school readers are bound to gobble up this convoluted tale. It’s a modern update on the Cyrano de Bergerac plot line, complete with text message interactions, that thoroughly confuses who is truly attracted to whom. Vail does a great job of developing each character, so it’s easy to see the reasoning behind their misguided actions. So settle down with this 8th grade rom-com complete with mistaken identity, opera, tortoises, mean girls, and awkward flirting. Recommended for middle school readers—as well as grown ups who want to slip back into the simpler (possibly more complicated) times of middle grade.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Are You “Show-Ready?” MIKE BUDER While showing homes the other day, I began to wonder why so many occupied homes are not properly prepared for showings. Most sellers know in advance that their home is going to be shown. When you get that call, it’s almost “show time.” Have a plan of action to get your home in “show-ready shape.” Open all the blinds and turn on all the lights. Homes that are light and bright appear larger and more inviting. If you have ceiling fans, turn them all on low. Have some soft music playing. Scents will help to create emotion. In years past, we would leave a drop of vanilla on a light bulb. When the agent turned on the light, the heat would release the vanilla fragrance into the air. Times have changed and now we can simply purchase small air fresheners. While some fragrance is good, too much can be overpowering. If you have time, run the vacuum cleaner over the carpets. Buyer’s notice when the carpets look like nobody has walked on them. While you may love your pets, many people are afraid of them and they often get in the way. Taking your pets with you during the showing time is the best idea. Some dogs are cratetrained and sit quietly in their crate. However, there’s

nothing more annoying than listening to a barking dog the whole time you’re viewing a home. Don’t be there when the agent and the buyers arrive. It’s awkward and makes the buyers uncomfortable. Buyers want to be able to peek into closets and kitchen cabinets. They want to be able to discuss what they like and don’t like with their agent and each other. If you’re there, it will probably be a short showing! Leave the selling to the agent. Many sellers assume the showing agent will arrive ahead of time to get the home showready. If I’m only showing one home, I often arrive early and get the lights on. However, if I’m showing more than one home, I have the buyers with me and we walk in at the same time for that important first impression. Buyers decide in the first 60 seconds if they like the home. JULY 4TH 2018 FESTIVITIES ABOUND IN OUR TOWNS: It was a glorious 4th of July in the USA! The sun was shining all day (until the sky opened up about 7 p.m.) and the kids had their fill of hot dogs and popsicles and the adults had their fill of the same plus some more sophisticated beverages. Some of the photos here depict the annual Whiting Parade dow n 119th Street where host Mayor Stahura outdid himself in rolling out t he red ca r pet for ma rchers a nd participants alike. H I S T OR IC A L S O C I E T Y F E AT U R E S CALUMET CITY CIRCA THE 1990’s: In a fascinating portrait of Calumet City in its recent past heyday, members of the Society were gifted with photos from the now defunct Southtown Star from Elaine Egdorf and Cynthia Ogorek. The pictures were the ‘stars’ of the Sunday July 8, 2018 Calumet City Historical Society meeting at 760 Wentworth Avenue. Stories and pictures of the Southtown Star, which made its home in Tinley Park, ran the gamut of what made Calumet City tick in the 1990’s... the “good old days” of the strip shows on State Line; the politicians of the day, including Calumet City Mayor Je r r y G e nov a , T hor nt on Tow n s h ip Superintendent Frank Giglio, and Joe Gambino; members of local Veteran’s associations—American Legion Post 330, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 8141, SD 149 (teacher strike in 1996); and churches li ke Our Lady of K nock. Much more to come in an upcoming N 2 N! Great programming by CCHS President Mike Wolski. Pictured here are members John Beck ma n (seated) a nd Jim Osterel lo during a break in the meeting, waiting for the ice cream social to start.

One Million Degrees Comes to South Suburban College One Million Degrees (OMD) Chicago, a nonprofit organization that empowers low-income, highly motivated community college students to succeed in school, in work, and in life—is expanding to South Suburban College (SSC). The organization is currently recruiting Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC) residents who will be enrolled full-time at South Suburban in fall 2018 to enroll in the OMD program. Students (“scholars) enrolled in the OMD Program receive access to the organization’s comprehensive on-campus supports, including free tutoring, monthly mentoring from a volunteer professional, career development services, and up to $1,000 annually in cash stipends. There are limited spots available so current and prospective SSC students are encouraged to apply today at www. onemilliondegrees.org/apply or contact Neal Spann at nspann@onemilliondegrees.org. Eligible students must be HACC residents or voucher recipients, have a 1.8 GPA or higher, be enrolled full-time in fall 2018, apply and receive the Pell grant, and qualify for in-district tuition at SSC. To work with the expanded student populations at SSC, OMD is recruiting volunteer mentors (“coaches) to provide monthly in-person professional guidance and supports. OMD

Coaches provide one-on-one and small-group professional and personal support throughout the academic year, while helping broaden scholars’ horizons of career aspirations and possibilities. Coaches are supported with ongoing training by OMD, and also have opportunities to connect with fellow coaches to expand their own professional networks. Coaches give just a few hours each month and make a profound difference in the lives of OMD Scholars. “I have loved my mentee and everything about my mentoring experience at OMD, said coach Neha Gupta, HR Specialist at PwC, “The two hours I spend monthly with my mentee are easily the two most meaningful hours of my month! Current and retired professionals from a variety of fields are encouraged to apply today to become a volunteer coach, which has a one academic year (September – May) commitment. Applications are now open at www.onemilliondegrees.org/ coach. OMD provides a variety of holistic supports—financial assistance, mentoring, academic interventions and professional development—to hundreds of community college students each year. It is one of the only organizations in the country working directly with low-income community

college students. OMD Scholars graduate from college at over two times the national average. Upon completion, its scholars transfer to four-year colleges and universities to earn their bachelor’s degrees and enter the workforce in highdemand fields, such as health care, IT and engineering. OMD Scholars build better futures for themselves, their families and their communities, while helping to strengthen the local and national economy. In the 2018-2019 academic year, OMD will serve up to 850 scholars across all of its program locations including South Suburban College. One Million Degrees believes that when given a solid system of support, every student has the ability to reach his or her full personal and professional potential. Since 2006, One Million Degrees has provided critical supports to help empower hundreds of community college students to succeed in the classroom and beyond. One Million Degrees Scholars are equipped with the skills necessary to help them reach their full potential in school, in work, and in life. To learn more about One Million Degrees, please visit www.onemilliondegrees.org. For more information about all of SSC’s programs, admissions and registration, please visit www.ssc.edu or contact the Admissions Office at (708) 210-5718.
