Thornton Township President Frank M. Zuccarelli and its Board of Trustees co-hosted the July 2018 World’s Largest Stepper’s Family Cook-out and Dance Party. The host, Ken Bedford, stated that this was the 7th year for this event and presented an award to Frank M. Zuccarelli and Thornton Township for their support. Thornton Township Trustee Gerald “Jerry” Jones accepted the award on behalf of President Frank M. Zuccarelli and said, “Thornton Township has been a major supporter of the Annual Stepper’s event for the last 7 years. Frank Zuccarelli was awarded
the award for Thornton Township supporting the event. It was a well-received award and the township will continue to support it. This event enriches the community and its quality.” Ken Bedford stated that there were several thousand people in attendance, and Trustee Jones said that there was no violence at this event. “Everyone that was at the event had a fantastic time. Help Munster Police Get a New K9 Officer The Munster Police Department is currently seeking monetary donations towards the purchase of a dual-purpose K-9 that would be trained to both provide comfort to residents but which can also detect the presence of drugs. The K-9 will be either a Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever (such as the K-9 pictured), and would become a valuable member of our police department. As a comfort dog, this K-9 will be trained to comfort individuals who have been the victims of crime or abuse. Comfort dogs are also well-suited to assist individuals with special needs, such as autism, as well. The new comfort dog is expected to become an important and popular part of the department’s regular community events and will be available to visit school children. As a narcotics-detecting dog, this K-9 will be able to assist in finding any drugs in our local schools, while also assisting at traffic stops and during search warrants. If you would like to help sponsor Munster’s new K-9 officer, just contact Officer James Ghrist at 219-836-6639 or jghrist@ munster.org. Thank you in advance for your support!

ARLO KALLEMEYN Imagine that you couldn’t see these words or hear them spoken. But you could still talk, write, read, and make friends. In fact, you went to college, wrote nearly a dozen books, traveled all over the world, met 12 U.S. presidents, and lived to be 87. Well, there was such a person, and she was born over a hundred years ago! Meet Helen Keller, a woman from the small farm town of Tuscumbia, Alabama who taught the world to respect people who are blind and deaf. Her mission came from her own life; when she was 1 1/2, she was extremely ill, and she lost both her vision and hearing. It was like entering a different world, with completely new rules, and she got very frustrated. By the time she was 7, her parents knew they needed help, so they hired a tutor named Anne Sullivan. Anne was strict, but she had a lot of energy. In just a few days, she taught Helen how to spell words with her hands (called the manual alphabet, which is part of the sign language that deaf people use.) The trouble was, Helen didn’t understand what the words meant—until one morning at the water pump (like an outdoor water fountain) she got a whole new attitude. Anne had Helen hold one hand under the water. Then she spelled “W-A-T-E-R” into Helen’s other hand. It was electric! The feeling turned into a word. Immediately, Helen bent down and tapped the ground; Anne spelled “earth.” Helen’s brain flew; that day, she learned 30 words. From then on, Helen’s mind raced ahead. She learned to speak when she was ten by feeling her teacher’s mouth when she talked. Often people found it hard to understand her, but she never gave up trying. Meanwhile, she learned to read French, German, Greek, and Latin in braille! When she was 20, she entered Radcliffe College, the women’s branch of Harvard University. Her first book, called The Story of My Life, was translated into 50 languages. (She used two typewriters: one regular, one braille.) She wrote ten more books and a lot more articles! How did she find the time? Helen also did research, gave speeches, and helped raise money for many organizations, such as the American Foundation for the Blind and the American Foundation for the Overseas Blind, which is now called Helen Keller Worldwide. From 1946 and 1957, she went around the world, speaking about the experiences and rights of people who are blind. She wound up visiting 39 countries on five different continents! Helen also inspired many works of art, including two Oscar-winning movies, and received dozens of awards, such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor that an American civilian can receive. She died in her sleep in 1968. Helen became an exceptional leader, once she saw the potential in her own mind. SOLVE THE MAZE
According to reporter Ishbel Ross, in 1907 four female journalists were covering a murder trial. Known for the sentimental angle of their writing, when a male reporter spied them sitting in the courtroom, he gave them the nickname of the “sob sisters.” From that came the habit of calling such writing sob stories. Over time, sob story has come to mean a tale of woe mean to evoke sympathy, especially when given as an excuse.

Speaking Of Seniors: Medicare Refused to Pay! On July 26, 2018, I met with a senior citizen client from Munster, Indiana. Together, we phoned a hospital to discuss a medical bill problem. Our client needed to grant permission for me to speak and question on her behalf. Before that phone call, I had WOODROW WILCOX already done research with and for our client. I knew that Medicare ruled that the medical service in question was NOT covered by Medicare. It was an ultrasound study of arteries and arterial grafts of both legs. Her doctor ordered the test. Medicare refused to pay anything for it. We made the phone call because I thought the bill might be

refused due to bad coding or unsubstantiated medical reasons for the medical service. But, the hospital representative told me it was refused because of an official policy decision of Medicare. The hospital knew of the policy to refuse to cover this service and it had persuaded our client to sign an ADVANCE BENEFICIARY NOTICE to warn the patient that the service probably would not be covered by Medicare. If a medical service is not covered by Medicare, neither Medicare nor the Medicare supplement insurance company will pay anything on the bill. The senior citizen patient gets the bill and no help to pay it. Why would Medicare NOT pay for such a medical service when the doctor needed it done to help the patient? Obamacare. It reported that the Obamacare law had slashed over $716 BILLION from the Medicare budget. Since then, the federal government has been looking for ways to shift medical care costs off the federal government and onto the backs of senior citizens. One of the ways it is doing that is by changing the rules of Medicare. The hospital that sent the bill to our client had acted prudently. The only thing that I was able to do was negotiate a payment schedule of $100 per month until the bill is paid. I could not help the client more. I don’t have a magic wand and I am unable to change federal government policy. Note: Woodrow Wilcox has saved clients of Senior Care Insurance Services over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our home inspection is scheduled for next week. This is the first time we’ve bought a home, and we’re not sure what to do and what not to do. Our agent says it’s not important for us to attend the inspection, that we should just wait for the report. But we’re uncomfortable with that advice. There are so many things we want to ask the inspector. What do you recommend? Answer: Your agent is not giving you good advice. The importance of attending your home inspection cannot be emphasized too strongly. Too many homebuyers miss a great opportunity by being present at their home inspection. Sometimes this is unavoidable, due to geographical distance. But whenever possible, buyers are strongly urged to participate in the inspection process. Being on site during the inspection, viewing specific conditions in person, consulting with the inspector, asking questions, and obtaining advice greatly magnify the benefits to you, the buyer. A home inspection is a fact-finding mission in which the inspector is your hired advocate. You and the inspector should jointly engage in the discovery process. Both of you are there for the same reason – to learn as much as possible about the condition of the property.
Prior to the inspection, most buyers make a purchase offer based upon a 15-minute walk-through or run-through. At that point, they know very little about a very expensive commodity. The home inspection provides buyers their only opportunity to slowly and methodically view and consider the object of their investment. During the inspection, they have hours to voice questions and concerns as they evaluate their prospective purchase. Buyers have even been known to discover defects the inspector might otherwise have missed. Buyer attendance also enables the inspector to explain the meaning and importance of each condition noted in the inspection report. When buyers are not present at the inspection, conditions noted in the report must be read and interpreted without explanation. Every home has something that needs attention. This something maybe very minor or it may be major. Safety & major issues are the items that you should be concerned with. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. RICHARD ZEKVELD Phoenicia invented it. Rome perfected it. Millions feared it. Thousands suffered it. But Jesus transformed it. The cross.

It no longer shocks us. Crosses are everywhere, adorning churches, hanging around our necks, embossed on Bibles. That such a repulsive thing became Christianity’s core symbol is astounding. Imagine millions rallying around a hangman’s noose. Imagine houses of worship adorned with electric chairs. Imagine barbarous instruments of torture embossed on Bibles. That’s how the cross initially struck millions who witnessed Christianity’s rise with a crucified criminal at its center. The idea was ridiculous and repulsive. Ancient graffiti features a man worshipping a donkey-headed man on a cross – a spoof on Christianity. The apostle Paul wrote, “We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles” (1 Corinthians 1:23,

The Bible). For ancient Jews, to worship a crucified man as Messiah was scandalous. Deuteronomy 21:22-23 stated that a man hung on a tree is cursed by God. Paul responds, “That’s true! But God cursed Jesus for our rebellion against God, not his own! God cursed him in our place so that all who turn to God for forgiveness might know his love, acceptance and blessing again!” For ancient Gentiles, a crucified man was scum, a pathetic weakling to be scorned in a culture that worshiped power and prestige. How ridiculous to proclaim such a man cosmic King to be trusted, loved and worshiped! Paul responds, “But this is the King we need, a King who restores us with his sacrificial love to thrive under God’s rule!” “We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:23-24, The Bible). Online School Supply Lists Offer Click-to-Buy Option TeacherLists.com. has school supply lists for many local schools. “For decades, the supply list process has been a frustration for parents,”points out John Driscoll of TeacherLists. “Where to find the lists? When are they available? Forgetting the list on the counter at home. Hunting the isles for the specific items their teacher has requested. All of those issues are solved with TeacherLists.” Parents can print the list and shop, or with just one or two clicks, access pre-filled shopping carts on Target, Walmart, Office Depot, Amazon and others to purchase the items and have them shipped right to their home. Target, Walmart and Office Depot also offer in store pick-up. Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Flipped vs. Rehabbed MIKE BUDER Lately I’ve seen a big difference between “flipped” homes and “rehabbed” homes. And while a rehabbed property might also be flipped, a flipped house doesn’t necessarily have to be rehabbed. With more and more homes being sold to investors, there are a lot of houses being flipped in today’s market. Not to say there’s anything wrong with that…there’s nothing wrong with earning a living or making money. But what I’ve noticed recently are the “fix and flips”. Perhaps a property is swooped up for a good price in a distressed sale situation. The owner has no intention of living there and does put in some sweat equity/elbow grease. Then places the property back on the market. If done correctly, the home will look great. If done incorrectly, the home will look like a rental property. Some of the fix and flip homes I’ve looked at are terrible. The quality of work is just not there and it’s noticeable. The homes are dated with maybe 70’s cabinetry, counter tops have gold leaf veining running through the Formica, dark wood floor boards and door frame moldings, aluminum cased windows, a fluorescent light fixture dangling in the kitchen. Oh sure, the carpet is new…there is fresh paint on the walls, and the property is clean as a whistle. But the work looks…well, like someone painted, cleaned and re-carpeted…nothing more. A quality rehabbed house shines. The flooring is refinished to bring out the hardwoods natural look, the cabinetry has been updated, the counter tops are replaced with hard surfaces, the dark trim has been replaced or repainted, the doors have been updated to six panel, appliances have been updated and the systems have been updated as needed. Perhaps electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roof and windows all have been done. The market is very competitive at the moment. Homes that have had a nice rehab can fare much better. They show much nicer and the updates will lure more offers from today’s picky buyers. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your comments are always welcome. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

JANICE MINTON-KUTZ
L OC A L S E N JOY PI E ROGI F E ST I N WHITING: The annual love fest that is devoted to that darling delicious dumpling was another huge success judging by the enormous crowds that came each day of the 3-day festival. N 2 N attended with friends on Saturday evening about 6 p.m. and we weren’t disappointed. First up was finding a parking space close to the event for walking. We got lucky about 2 blocks from 119th and Indianapolis. If we didn’t find that we either had our choice of using one of the outer parking lots on Calumet for $20 or $25 or going even further out to the free lot with the shuttle buses. Those were plans A, B and C on our itinerary for the evening. Once there, it was a feast for the eyes, ears and taste buds. We sampled Drago Bobs and giant polish, washed down with strawberr y lemonade. We ate ice cream cones and found neighbors on most every corner. It was as my mother might say, “old home week.” Pictured here are the Buscias, a crowd favorite taking pictures with fans of all ages. In another photo are Larry and Kathy Grzwinski of Lansing and Debbie and Ray Sellers of Ca lumet Cit y and their adorable granddaughter and Larry Kutz watching the International Slovak Dancers and singers. Rick Banich, of Comfort Roast Coffee and Cafe was inside toasting up some home made pierogis while the coffee brewed for sale in the tent outside. His cozy shop is outfitted like a classy apartment complete with leather sofas, reading material and coffee tables. Makes a Pierogi Fest visitor want to relax and stay a while. The event is pure delight and was covered by media of all stripes. We all walked and walked until our legs gave out and had to f ind places to sit. A five star event in Northwest Indiana that is a hit every year! Bravo Whiting and Pierogi Fest! *** E R I N W E I S B E AU L I E U T O S I N G NAT IONA L A N T HEM AT R A IL C ATS GAME SUNDAY AUGUST 5, 2018: Erin, who is married to Joe Beaulieu, Coldwell Banker’s chief technical guru and who is in possession of a gorgeous voice will do the honors at the Sunday August 5, 2015 RailCats game in Gary, Indiana. A gathering of Brokers and friends from the Coldwell Banker will be attending the game thanks to the efforts of Donna (Highland) and Rose ( Valpo) and Joe (Schererville). Erin auditioned for the spot singing the National Anthem and she WON! She has been singing all her life and took voice lessons during high school and college. She has sung at weddings and has been leader of song at church. Erin says she is “mostly a stay at home Mom,” but in addition to her vocal accomplishments and talents, works part time at Park Press (next to the Shoppers) in South Holland for almost 20 years handling various office
duties. She and hubby Joe have 3 adorable children that all seem to have inherited musical talent. The Coldwell Banker guys and gals are going to be on hand Sunday to cheer Erin on! Will we hear her on “The Voice” soon? *** LANSING’S MAYOR PATTY TO HOST 1ST GOLF OUTING FRIDAY AUGUST 3RD, 2018: The lovely Lansing Country Club will be the site of Lansing Mayor Patty Eidam’s 1st golf outing this Friday August 3rd, 2018. There will be golf and dinner and great gift prizes and raffles. Golf is $125 and if you won’t be golfing, dinner is $75. There will be a shotgun start. For more information contact 219-789-7741. *** T HOR N T ON F R AC T ION A L NOR T H CLASS OF 1968 TO HOST 50th REUNION: Set for Friday August 24 and Saturday August 25th and Sunday August 26th. On Friday American Legion Post 330, 950 Legion Drive, Calumet City will be the site of the social get together starting at 7 p.m. At 6 p.m. Saturday there will be dinner and dancing at Lencioni’s in Lynwood, Il on RT 83, and on Sunday a 12 Noon picnic at Sweet Woods Forest Preserve will round out the festive weekend. 4 Tips for Packing a Healthy School Lunch That’s Also Cheap It won’t be long before kids will be heading back to school and for the parents to begin packing their lunches again. Organic food is expensive and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches only work for so long. But Chef Zipora Einav (www.chefzipora.com), a chef to the celebrities and author of Recipe for a Delicious Life, says it is easy to stick to a budget on school lunches if you plan and prepare the meals at home in advance. “Planning a menu and shopping with a list each week helps to manage your budget because you only buy what is needed rather than going to the store each day, she says. “And if the kids are old enough, let them help you prepare their lunches. That is an excellent time to have discussions with your children about nutrition. Chef Zipora offers these suggestions for preparing a
nutritious brown bag lunch for children throughout the school year: For a healthier snack, offer baked vegetable chips or sweet potato fries (rather than buying the packaged chips) Make home-baked chicken fingers or bake chicken to create a sandwich on whole wheat bread. Add lettuce. Include seasonal fruit such as apples, pears and strawberries. Does your child have a favorite vegetable like carrot sticks or celery? You can include a hummus dip (which is offered plain or comes in several flavors). You can also add whole wheat crackers such as Wheat Thins or Breton. “Eating healthy does not need to be expensive, Chef Zipora says, “and preparing the foods can be easier than most people think if they just prepare in advance and shop for
healthy groceries. Chef Zipora Einav (www.chefzipora.com) is an accomplished private chef who has cooked for some of Hollywood’s most notable celebrities – Bob Hope, Jack Nicholson, Mariah Carey, Pierce Brosnan, Scarlett Johansson – and for professional athletes, including former National Football League star Donovan McNabb. She is the author of Recipe for a Delicious Life, which includes recipes, a classical music CD titled Music for a Delicious Life, and her anecdotes and adventures while travelling the world as a private chef. She founded her company, Chef Zipora Enterprise – Comfort Food in Harmony with Your Health™ – to improve people’s lives by empowering them to eat well and embrace a healthy lifestyle. The company achieves this through its food, music products, books and edutainment programs.
