40th Annual Settlers’ Day
Step back in time and experience what life was like for the pioneers and other early Americans at Sand Ridge Nature Center’s 40th annual “Settlers’ Day” celebration to be held on Sunday, November 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., located at 15891 Paxton Ave. in South Holland. The Cook County Forest Preserve’s Sand Ridge Nature Center will be transformed into a setting depicting pioneer life in America during the early 1800’s. The whole family will enjoy viewing and asking questions of the volunteers in period dress. Demonstrations of pioneer activities will include cooking over an open fire, candle dipping, and everyday life in a log cabin. Settlers’ Day will offer visitors the opportunity to experience the rigors of pioneering when they participate in a fun “wagon train” hike. The objective of this simulated 8-day, 200 mile journey from Ohio to Illinois is to first carefully select supplies from a list and then skillfully manage them to last the entire length of the trip. Of course, unforeseen events occur along the way. Native American history, early French fur trading, American Revolutionary and Civil War encampments depicting life during these times are also featured. Guided history hikes and demonstrations about how pioneers grew and used plants and herbs will be presented by District naturalists and volunteers. Children will enjoy making a craft to take home, and testing their stamina at the two-person bucksaw. There will be displays about local Native American archaeology and pioneer wares. Back by popular demand, we will have working dogs performing typical tasks such as pulling a cart of firewood or water. We are happy to have our blacksmith returning this year. He will be demonstrating and explaining his art, as well as offering items for sale. This special event is free; however, donations of money or non-perishable foods to benefit a local food depository will be gratefully accepted at the nature center building. For further information about this event please call 708-8680606, or visit our website at www.fpdcc.com.
No Increased Tax Levy for Library
The Board of Trustees of the Lansing Public Library decided at their board meeting in October to keep the tax levy at the same level it was last year. This is the second year in a row that the library board has not increased their tax levy. They were able to do this even though they just finished a 1.75 million dollar re-modeling project in 2011. The board recognizes that many taxpayers are struggling in this challenging economic time. The library will do everything it can to keep costs down while providing a comfortable environment and necessary resources for their patrons.
Get in the Holiday Spirit – Free Concert at GSU
Just in time to share the spirit of the season, the Governors State University Choral Performance Class is presenting a free Holiday Concert on December 1, at 2 p.m., in Sherman Recital Hall. This concert has old favorites, new standards, and sing-alongs; including songs of Hanukkah, music from South America, and jazz versions of traditional carols with accompanist Joyce Beer. “We are singing a variety of music that is sure to get everyone into the spirit,” says choir conductor Stacy Eckert. “Our program has favorites like ‘The Little Drummer Boy,’ and ‘Peace on Earth’ as well as fun songs like ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas,’ and ‘The Grinch.’ And we love it when the audience joins in and sings with us. This is a free, fun, family event.”
