plate stickers—from the comfort of their own home. People who conduct online transactions will avoid waiting in line at a facility. White noted that online transactions continue to flourish, with June 2020 seeing an increase of 110 percent in online license plate sticker renewals when compared to June 2019. Through July 31, Driver Services facilities are serving ONLY new drivers, customers with expired driver’s licenses/ID cards and vehicle transactions. Face masks are required. Customers who must visit a facility are asked to be patient due to heavy volume and prepared to wait outside in various types of weather. This is due to social distancing, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time. In addition, customers who must visit a facility to renew their driver’s license or ID card are encouraged to first use the preregistration application at www.cyberdriveillinois.com, which will speed up their transaction while at the facility. Governor JB Pritzker extended the Disaster Proclamation an additional month, which in turn extended the expirations for driver’s licenses/ID cards and vehicle registration stickers an additional month to Nov. 1.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses/ID cards and license plate stickers have been extended an additional month – from Oct. 1, 2020, to Nov. 1, 2020. This new Nov. 1 extension also includes those who have July, August and September expiration dates. As a result, expired documents will remain valid until Nov. 1 so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during the current heat wave. “Extending expiration dates until November 1 means people with an expired driver’s license, ID card or license plate sticker do not need to rush into a Driver Services facility immediately,” said White. “During this current heat wave, I would suggest residents consider delaying their visit to a facility. But if you must visit a facility, please come prepared to wait outside due to social distancing, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time.” White continues to urge the public to consider using online services when possible instead of visiting a facility due to heavy customer volume. Customers who can conduct business online may go to www. cyberdriveillinois.com to take advantage of online services—such as renewing license

Mom On Money
Cut Back, Cut Out, Cut Costs NANCY ZEKVELD
As a mom of five living in South Holland for just over 12 years and a Center Manager for our local Debt Help Center helping families like you in the local area. I’ve picked up a few things around coping with family, budgeting and some basic life skills! I hope you find this occasional column helpful and amusing and if you need any help you’ll find my details at the bottom of this. I’d love to hear any suggestions from your life too! As we enter the summer season in this crazy time of pandemic (how many times can we hear the words “this unprecedented season”?!) I know I’ve had to be careful on my spending and budgeting. I have found that keeping in mind these three tips help to keep me on track. Cut back. Cut out. Cut costs. Applying these principles isn’t easy with five kids who have increasing suggestions on how to spend money - but they are values I work at passing on to them as they are much needed in society. I asked the kids how we apply these three cuts and without needing to really think about it the ideas spilled out - so it appears they have been listening to me after all!. “Eat at home.” Seriously now, do you know
what it costs to take 7 people out to eat?! “Limit data on your phone plan, don’t often stay at hotels (take vacations near people you know! ) Don’t buy the first thing you see - look for a better price, buy second hand, borrow or rent items such as tools that you are only going to use once, buy groceries at Aldi.” My favorite was Anton’s “be a cheap-o”! Some prefer to call it thrifty, careful or frugal. Whatever you want to call it, thinking like a cheap-o will help you stay within your budget. You worked hard for your money - let it work hard for you by getting the most value for your dollar. INvets Program Matches Indiana Veterans with Careers State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) encourages veterans and Indiana companies to sign up for INvet’s next-generation website that connects service members directly with Hoosier businesses. INvets.org is a free resource for veterans to interact and find the most current information about job opportunities available in health care, logistics, manufacturing and tech, and other high-demand industries throughout the state. Aylesworth said the program provides details about the skills required, with links to education and training partners that offer the training, credentials or degrees needed. “As a veteran, I know returning to civilian life and finding a job is important, and a big concern for many service members,” Aylesworth said. “INvets helps ease the anxiety of getting a job by quickly connecting veterans with Indiana companies that have high-demand positions available.” Aylesworth said when service members leave the military, almost 50% deal with a period of unemployment. As businesses
resume operations after closure and reduced production due to COVID-19, more than 100,000 in-demand jobs are still available throughout Indiana. To sign up for the INvets program, veterans should visit www.INvets.org. Once a service member completes their profile on the site, Aylesworth said their information is directed to participating companies. Employers who sign up for INvets have free access to upload company information, job opportunities and review veteran profiles. Since INvets launched, more than 150 companies and over 1,000 veterans have participated. Aylesworth said additional resources are available through the Military Family Relief Fund COVID-19 Emergency Assistance program, which is designed to help military families experiencing financial hardship. This grant can be used on a case-by-case basis by families for up to two months of household needs such as food, housing, utilities, medical services, child care and other essential family support. Why Do Buyers Low Ball? MIKE BUDER When a low offer comes in, I’m often asked by sellers, “what are these people thinking?” The easy answer is “they aren’t thinking,” but the real truth is far more complex. At the heart of it all is always selfinterest, which is the very same reason why sellers want to get the most money for their homes. The following are some motivations for buyers to low ball. 1. SPECULATION- Hey, you never know, the seller might just go for it. Sadly there are some mud throwers in this group who will make 10 low offers hoping one sticks. Some are wanna-be investors, others just want to live cheaply (do you blame them?). 2. BAD ADVICE- The buyer’s agent made too many promises about what they could do for them, or their uncle Don thinks he’s a wheeler dealer at Sunday dinner. 3. MEDIA HYSTERIA- Banking to much on TV and newspapers reporting on national statistics that may not be consistent to local markets. 4. FEAR- Some buyers know too many people who have been hurt due to a job loss, declining values or both. They are far more cautious than they were ten years ago. 5. CULTURE- Some buyers come from other countries and make low offers because that is just how they do business where they come from and they may
have no idea that a low number would be insulting. 6. MIXED SIGNALS- The buyer might feel that a vacant home might have desperate owners or a house with no signs of a man is a divorce. If a buyer “smells blood” they will press their perceived advantage, accurate or not. 7. GENERIC RESEARCH- GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) comes to mind, but no matter the source, be it Zillow or some other website that can appraise a home without even entering it. Some people are just over influenced by collected data. In all these cases a seller’s response should be calm, calculated and unemotional. Offers are just a starting point. The real goal is a good ending point (accepted contracts) and those start with an offer, no matter how high or low. It might be tempting to send a low offer packing, but the best thing to do is counter offer and negotiate. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 708-418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com, or Facebook Friend-request Mike Buder. IL Youth Employment Assistance Extended With workers facing high rates of unemployment, Assistant Majority Leader Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) encouraged local organizations who work in the area of youth unemployment to take advantage of the extended Aug. 3 application deadline for the Illinois Youth Investment Program. “Many of our newest workers are surviving paycheck to paycheck as the pandemic continues,” Martinez said. “For organizations that support underserved young people, these grants are an opportunity to help more those who need it the most.” The Illinois Youth Investment Program, administered by the Department of Human Services, supports at-risk youth
who are seeking long-term career employment. Providers interested in serving young people in their area can apply for grants online at the DHS website, https://www.dhs.state.il.us/ page.aspx?item=122996>. Grants are awarded to providers who can assist at-risk youth with short-term, long-term and industry-specific career development opportunities. In addition to employment support, IYIP also provides participants with support services for their physical, emotional, social and mental health needs. Questions about IYIP and other DHS grants can be answered by calling 800-843-6154, or online at https://www.dhs.state. il.us/page.aspx?item=122996> .

Speaking Of Seniors
A Great Deal For Seniors WOODROW WILCOX Usually, I write about fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. But seniors like good deals that help them stretch their money, too. Three restaurants in the Calumet region have a great deal for seniors who want to have a meal away from home at a price that won’t hurt their budget. The Round The Clock restaurants in Lansing, Highland, and Schererville offer seniors a complete meal including beverage and desert for only $6.95. Just add the sales tax and the tip on that and you have a very affordable meal away from home. The Round The Clock restaurant in Lansing is on Torrence Avenue just south of Interstate 80/94. The Round The Clock restaurant in Highland is on Indianapolis Boulevard a little south of Ridge Road. The Round The Clock restaurant in Schererville is on U. S. 30 less than a block west of Indianapolis Boulevard (U.S. 41). I regularly visit the one in Schererville. That one plays music from the 1950’s and 1960’s. The old songs add to the pleasure of visiting that location. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available from Amazon. com, E-Bay, and other booksellers.

Indiana Division of Family Resources Offices are Open Indiana Family and Social Services Administration has reopened its local Division of Family Resources offices in all 92 counties for Hoosiers preferring in-person service. The offices had been closed to the public since March 20 in an effort to help contain the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). FSSA had been processing an increased amount of applications for food and cash assistance and health coverage virtually and continues to strongly encourage Hoosiers to apply for these benefits or check the status of their application or case either online at www.fssabenefits.in.gov or over the phone by calling 800-4030864.
DFR staff are required to wear face coverings and take other protective measures for themselves and the public, and is encouraging all visitors to wear masks while inside or around others. Face coverings will be required wherever local mandates are in place. DFR local office locations can be found here. Each office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time. The number of clients who can be served at the same time varies from office to office due to their variations in size and configuration. FSSA encourages patience, should be there long lines or waits, and understanding that due to social distancing requirements
and capacity limitations, clients may be required to wait outside. Each office is currently equipped with a drop box, where any paperwork or documents can be left by applicants or clients without requiring them to enter the building. FSSA’s Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services is also once again serving its clients in person at its Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services and Vocational Rehabilitation Services offices, while also continue to offer services remotely. Many of these offices are co-located with DFR. These office locations can be found at this page by clicking the “Find a DDRS Local Office” link.

Financial Advice Column
Real Estate Questions & Answers “disappointing” offer is surely flexible -today you might be elated to get an offer equal to the ones you rejected a few years ago. In real estate, as in baseball, you can’t always hit a home run. Sometimes you have to settle for less. Third, it’s impossible to know if market conditions will “get better.” No one knows that the future will bring. Fourth, the fact that you’ve invested more in the property through improvements does not guarantee that the value will rise. You are a captive of local marketing conditions. If the market generally improves the value of your house will increase. If the market generally declines, it will be difficult to get a higher price. The tide that lifts all boats can also drag them down. Before going further, why not speak to an experienced, local, real estate broker. Also, why not determine what you really want to do? Is it best to enjoy your home and stay where you are -- or is it better to take a loss now and move to a community that would offer more of the lifestyle benefits you seek? These are questions of both economics and personal preferences that only you can answer. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of selling your home? It’s unfortunate, but true: During this period of economic uncertainty, one of the busiest “industries” has been financial scamming. But it goes on even during normal times, too, so you’ll want to know what to look for, and how to defend yourself. For starters, just how widespread is financial fraud? Consider this: In 2019, more than 3.2 million fraud cases were reported to the Federal Trade Commission, with identity theft being the most common type of fraud, accounting for about onefifth of the overall cases. And fraudulent new accounts (mortgages, student loans, car loans and credit cards) amounted to about $3.4 billion in 2018, according to a study by Javelin Strategy & Research. To help yourself from being victimized, consider the following suggestions. They are certainly not an exhaustive list, but they should prove useful. Watch out for unsecure websites. Make sure a website is secure before entering any payment or personal information. Look for sites that start with HTTPS, rather than those with just HTTP, which are not secure and can be hacked. But even a site with HTTPS can still be used by scammers, so, if you don’t recognize the name of the company or group that’s requesting your information, do some research to make sure it’s legitimate. Review your credit reports. As mentioned above, the fraudulent opening of new accounts is a big source of financial scams. To be sure nobody has opened new accounts under your name, try to review your credit reports at least once a year. You can get them for free at AnnualCreditReport.com. Follow up on fraud. If you’ve already been victimized by having new accounts opened in your name, contact one of the three major credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax or TransUnion) and
place a 90-day fraud alert on your credit file. You might also want to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, print it out and file it with your local law enforcement agency. And it’s also a good idea to contact the fraud department of the financial companies where the thief has opened a fraudulent account in your name. Be alert for suspicious links. “Phishers” have gotten quite good at sending out messages that look like they’re from reputable businesses. But if you examine these messages carefully, you can usually determine if there’s something off about them. For example, no legitimate business will tell you, via this type of message, that you have to “correct your account” by providing additional information. And if you do hit the link provided, and it takes you to a third-party site, you can be pretty sure it’s bogus. Resist “act now” offers. If you get an offer, via phone or online, urging you to “act immediately” on an investment opportunity, discontinue the communication. No reputable financial advisor will ever try to force you to take such swift action, and if an investment is legitimate, it will be available tomorrow, next week and next year. Use your shredder. You probably have the option to “go paperless” with all your banks and financial services providers, but, if you still do receive paper documents, be sure to shred them when they’re no longer needed. You save and invest for years to help achieve your long-term goals. Don’t let any of your efforts be undone by financial fraudsters. Protect Yourself Against Financial Scammers SUBMITTED BY BOB KRYGSHELD
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We were planning to sell our home to move closer to my husband’s job and my son’s school. We tried to do this move two years ago, when our house was on the market about four months at a competitive price, but the offers we had were rather disappointing. Since it’s an 18-year-old house, people were expecting us to fix up every single detail or lower the price. If we lowered the price, however, we would have had to sell the property at the price we paid three years before even though we put it new wood floors, changed several windows, painted it, etc. In the past two years we’ve been trying to fix up everything else we thought important, adding about $10,000 or more in upgrades. However, we talked to a broker recently, telling her about our plans to put the house on the market again, and the selling price she suggested this time was $5,000 less than two years ago. Should we go ahead and sell the house at this new low price or should we try to keep on fixing things, and expect the market conditions to get better and sell it at a higher price in the future? Answer: Your experience illustrates several important points. First, real estate is a commodity. Prices do not always rise. While real estate values in most places and in most years have increased during the past decade, that is not the case everywhere. Second, the definition of a

Missing Children to be Featured on Gas Station TVs A new campaign will put the faces of local missing children front and center this summer while you’re pumping your gas! The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) is proud to be working with San Francisco-based advertising agency MUH-TAY-ZIK / HOF-FER and the gas station video giant, GSTV, to feature missing children on gas pump video screens in markets across the U.S. during the month of July. This is all part of the “Runaway Train” music video campaign that launched last year, remaking the 1993 hit song and featuring missing children based on the viewer’s
location. NCMEC wants to remind and empower the public to be on the lookout this summer for missing children in their area. We know that all it takes is one person to pay attention, do the right thing and help bring a missing child home. For the families that NCMEC works with, this is an opportunity to generate new attention for their missing loved ones and garner new leads in their case. If you have information about a missing or exploited children contact NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST or on social media @ missingkids.

Catholic Church. Most touching at Betty’s funeral was the remembrance of her life from the perspective of her daughter, Lynn Ann, who was born 18 years after Betty and Tom married in 1956, while Bett y was in Worsha m Mortua r y school(t he first student to attend the school while expecting a baby) and who was way ahead of her time. Lynn Ann notes that what made the marriage, family and funeral home all mesh, “was teamwork. Working side by side.” Lynn Ann said, “they built the business, raised my brother and me,” and managed all the aspects of family and community life. With ‘glimpses’ of her mother’s life, Lynn Ann pictures her mother as “golden, successful, confident and on fire!” She ends her remarks with “The circle of life is now complete for my mother; she has begun a new life. As our Catholic faith teaches us, ‘life has changed, not ended.’” May Betty Lou Janusz Rest in Peace. ***

JOSH BOOTSMA that the destiny of the wicked is ruinous. He says in verse 27, “For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.” God is faithful in his judgment. Even though evil may prosper now, those who give themselves to the Lord will be ultimately be rewarded. It was the martyred missionary Jim Elliot who said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Jesus Christ is our example in this. He gave up his own life so that our sins would be paid for and you and I can have eternal life. So the question is now yours: will you give up the fleeting pleasures of this life to secure what you can never lose—eternal life as a saved child of God? Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org
You’ve encountered people who lie and cheat to get ahead, with seemingly no consequences. It’s frustrating. Maybe you’ve turned to God and asked, “Why? Why do you reward their sinful choices?” You aren’t the first to ask that question. In verse 3 of Psalm 73, the psalmist declares, “I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” In verse 5 he says, “They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.” He goes on to say that it feels like he’s kept the Lord’s commandments in vain. And don’t we feel that way sometimes? Why should we seek to be good people when it seems like the Lord doesn’t care? In verses 16 and 17, he realizes the truth: “But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end.” When he comes before God, he realizes

Harvey to Receive Grant to Decrease “Digital Divide” With remote learning and working from home putting a strain on underserved areas without high-speed internet access, State Senator Napoleon Harris (D-Harvey) has announced the Illinois Connected Communities grant has been awarded to the City of Harvey to help develop a plan to ensure access to high-speed internet across the community. “In 2020, broadband internet access is as important as basic utilities. I applaud the City of Harvey for understanding that and applying for the Illinois Connected Communities grant program,” Harris said. “For now, evidence shows that blended learning will be the new norm—it’s important we start working now to make sure the digital divide isn’t a burden on our students’ success.”
The Illinois Connected Communities grant program is designed to help underserved local governments, schools and community organizations secure internet access. The program awards $150,000 in state-funded small grants and $150,000 matching funds from supporting groups to accommodate the adoption of high-speed broadband for 12 communities. Local supporting groups will provide more than 50 hours of free consulting for all 12 communities awarded the Illinois Connected Communities grant. Groups will help communities define their technology goals; measure current levels of broadband access, adoption and use; and seek technical assistance and other funds to meet community
COVID-19 Reimbursement Available through FEMA To assist local governments, nonprofits, and religious organizations recoup funds expended during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency managers throughout the state are encouraging entities to attend the scheduled virtual briefings to begin 839 the reimbursement application process to receive federal funds. “There are more than 1,328 known eligible applicants in the State of Illinois, yet only 159 have applied for reimbursement to date. We do not want anyone to be left behind in the recovery process,” said IEMA Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau. “Costs eligible for reimbursement include, but are not limited to, overtime costs associated with the COVID-19 response, the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE), testing supplies and equipment, housing assistance, purchase and distribution of food, and more. If you have questions about eligibility, we urge you to contact your county emergency management office today.”
needs. “The City of Harvey applied because digital equity and inclusion is a priority that we share with Gov. JB Pritzker,” said City of Harvey Mayor Christopher Clark. “We believe broadband access is just as important as utilities like water, gas and electricity. Harvey has been on the wrong side of the digital divide. This grant gives us the opportunity–and the strategy–to right that wrong. We are excited to partner with DCEO and the Benton Institute’s experts to devise a community-led strategy for our city.” These grants will help lay the groundwork for individual communities to play a part in Connect Illinois, a $420 million program to bring basic access to all communities by 2024.
